Palestinian anger at US rising over UN veto threat
APBy KARIN LAUB and MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH - Associated Press | AP – OCT 7,11

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinians have long been skeptical of America's ability to help them win independence. But low expectations have turned into frustration and in some cases outright anger after the U.S. threatened to derail a bid for U.N. recognition of an independent state and Congress put a hold on $200 million in badly needed aid.Protests have been small so far, from burning a few U.S. flags and pictures of President Barack Obama to editorials blasting U.S. policy and portraying Washington as beholden to Israel. On Tuesday, about 30 people accosted a U.S. diplomatic convoy in the West Bank town of Ramallah, chanting shame on you and hurling a shoe outside a U.S.-hosted reception at a local restaurant.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday that relations with the U.S. have not been affected, but also criticized the Washington for attempting to scuttle the Palestinians' request of membership in the U.N. cultural agency. Abbas said Palestinians are angry about U.S. policies, but that our anger is civilized anger, meaning it won't turn violent. Some senior politicians and well-known opinion makers have publicly written off the United States as a credible broker, tapping into a broad sentiment among Palestinians that going to the U.N., in defiance of Washington, was the right move.

Washington's threat to block U.N. recognition of Palestine is an act of aggression, said writer Hani al-Masri, who boycotted the Ramallah reception by U.S. diplomats. Other invitees said they stayed away because they feared a backlash in their community — an indicator of the combative mood in the West Bank.U.S. officials did not comment publicly, but privately played down the problem. One thrown shoe is not evidence of growing anti-American sentiment among the Palestinians, one official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Al-Masri believes anger would only grow if the Obama administration goes ahead with a veto in the U.N. Security Council, the only body that can bestow full membership. The Security Council is still reviewing the Palestinian application and it's not clear whether the Palestinians can muster the needed majority of nine of 15 members which would trigger the American veto.A potential cut in U.S. aid to the Palestinians could further deepen the rift. In late August, members of Congress put a hold on some $200 million, or nearly one-third of the U.S. funding for the Palestinians for 2011.The U.S. is the single largest contributor nation to the Palestinians' annual aid of hundreds of millions of dollars — a package that is critical to development projects and the functioning of the Palestinian Authority. The Congressional action was meant as a warning, but it did not deter Abbas, who submitted the request for recognition of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem — lands captured by Israel in 1967 — to the U.N. a month later.
Since then, U.S. aid programs worth tens of millions of dollars have been suspended for lack of funding. The Obama administration has been trying to get Congress to reconsider, arguing that such cuts only weaken those working for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. But the administration also insists that a Palestinian state can only arise from negotiations, not in the United Nations, and has lobbied Security Council members not to support the bid for recognition.

Abbas also called on Congress to reconsider its decision.Negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel have been on hold in since 2008.Israel says it's willing to resume, but Abbas says he can't do so unless Israel halts settlement-building on occupied land and recognizes the pre-1967 frontier as a baseline for border talks. International Mideast mediators have called for a quick return to negotiations and a border deal by the end of the year, but have not proposed a way out of the standoff.
After Obama was elected in 2008, some Palestinians were hopeful that he would transform U.S. foreign policy, in part because of his stirring appeal to the Arab and Muslim world to open a new chapter. Obama also said he would make a deal on the terms of Palestinian statehood a priority from the start.Palestinians were disappointed when, several months into his term, Obama backed down from demands that Israel freeze settlement construction and, from a Palestinian perspective, lost more and more ground to Israel's hardline government.I don't think any other administration has gone so far to demonstrate loyalty to Israel, said Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Abbas delegation at the U.N.People are furious, she said of the mood in the West Bank. The U.S. in public opinion has plummeted. It is the worst it's ever been, not just in Palestine, (but in) the whole Arab world ... This is costing the U.S., this blind allegiance (to Israel), a great deal globally.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he's serious about negotiating a deal and warned the Palestinians are missing an opportunity by refusing to return to the table. In a declared ideological shift, he has accepted the idea of a Palestinian state, at least in principle. But Abbas believes he can't extract a deal acceptable to the Palestinian public from Netanyahu, who has limited his options by stacking his coalition with nationalists. Some Palestinians argue that rather than just being an ineffective broker, the U.S. is actively promoting Israel's interests.Iyad Saher, 33, a civil servant in Hamas-ruled Gaza, called for a boycott of all things American, from consumer goods to movies, echoing a call by a Facebook group with several thousand supporters. The American people should understand that their government is working against the future of the Americans. The director of a Ramallah-based NGO said he was thankful for the many U.S.-funded aid projects, including schools and roads. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said he attended Tuesday's reception, but only after the protesters had left. If they saw me entering in they will hate me and look at me as a traitor, when I'm not,he explained.
Associated Press writers Ibrahim Barzak in Gaza and Dalia Nammari in Ramallah contributed reporting.

Sarkozy: Jewish State a Silly Idea-French president Nicolas Sarkozy squarely blames Israel for stalled talks and says the Jewish state's national identity is silly.By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 10/6/2011, 9:12 PM

According to the oft-controversial French magazine Le Canard EnchaƮne, President Nicolas Sarkozy thinks the idea of a Jewish state is silly. It is silly to talk about a Jewish state, Sarkozy said in reference to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's assertion no true peace could be made until officials in Ramallah accepted Israel's essential Jewish identity. It would be like saying that this table is Catholic, he added. There are two million Arabs in Israel.Sarkozy also placed sole blame for failed negotiations between Israel and PA officials on Netanyahu's shoulders. The US has been asking Abbas for years to come to the negotiating table. He is willing to do it because he is a statesman. Netanyahu, on the other hand, never fails to disappoint us, Sarkozy said.Only now, he announced the construction of 1,100 housing units in the Arab part of Jerusalem.Sarkozy seemed to deem two years of mounting preconditions for negotiations by PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas immaterial to failed talks.Nor did he concede Israel has frozen construction in the disputed territories for 10-months in a bid to bring Abbas to the negotiating table only to find new preconditions existed. The Palestinians have been waiting for a state they deserve for 60 years now, Sarkozy said. Is it not fair that Palestine is recognized by the UN even in an observer status? Sarkozy, whose statements were strongly reminiscent of comments made two weeks ago by former US president Bill Clinton, had previously (like Clinton) presented himself as a staunch ally of Israel. Now, observers say, Sarkozy has removed his mask and made his true face concerning Israel clear.

Op-Ed: Remember the Contents of the Oslo Accords? A Eulogy Published: Thursday, October 06, 2011 9:06 PM

We missed the Oslo anniversary, but It was particularly not convenient to celebrate the dead accords when Mahmoud Abbas came to the UN and put the final nail in its coffin.Steven Shamrak-On September 28th the world was supposed to celebrate, but conveniently forgot that it was the anniversary of the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement, widely known as the Oslo Accords.Three political stooges: Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Perez, received the Nobel Peace prize for signing this worthless piece of paper, which was based on fake promises made by Yasser Arafat in a letter to then-Prime Minister of Israel, Yitschak Rabin on 9 September, 1993.In this letter Yasser Arafat promised:The PLO considers that the signing of the Declaration of Principles constitutes an historic event, inaugurating a new epoch of peaceful coexistence, free from violence and all other acts which endanger peace and stability. Accordingly, the PLO renounces the use of terrorism and other acts of violence and will assume responsibility over all PLO elements and personnel in order to assure their compliance, prevent violations and discipline violators. It was particularly not convenient to celebrate the dead accords when Mahmoud Abbas came to the UN and put the final nail in its coffin, unilaterally abandoning the principles of negotiation and undermined stability of the peace process.Due to enormous political pressure exhorted on Israel by the Clinton administration to sign the agreement, many parts of it were deliberately written ambiguously to make it open to interpretation.Israel was prepared to allowed limited autonomy to the non-Jewish populations of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, but the PLO was determined to obtain statehood as the first step towards future territorial expansion with the inclusion of the land of Israel and possibly Jordan, as part of Palestine.

Many promises were made, clearly but deceitfully, by Arafat and never delivered:
1. Terror attacks on Israel have never stopped.
2. PA regularly sabotaged negotiations, endangering peace and stability by breaking them and calling for international pressure on Israel.

Arabs respect strong opponents. It is integral to their national makeup.
Terrorists of Fatah, Hamas and other Islamic organisations continued freely conducting their bloody business. Often, the terrorist actions were coordinated by PA to meet its political aim. When the Oslo agreement was signed, several important undertakings were promised by the PLO, but not delivered by Arafat and Abbas:

1. Israel is still not legally recognised by the Palestinian Authority or by any major organisations like PLO or Hamas.
2. The new entity is supposed to be a democracy. After the last election, which Hamas won, Abbas illegally retained control of the PA and the next election is long overdue. Therefore, the current PA leadership is not legitimate nor democratically elected representatives of so-called Palestinians.
3. Article XI,1: The two sides view the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as a single territorial unit - At the moment there are two defacto governing bodies: PA, Fatah controlled, in Judea and Samaria, and Hamas in Gaza.
4. Terrorist attacks on Israel have never stopped. Israel was forced to build a wall around the West Bank to stop suicide bombers, who were mainly recruited by Fatah. Gaza was sealed due to terror attacks instigated by Hamas.
5. Article XXII,2: Israel and the Council will ensure that their respective educational systems contribute to the peace between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples and to peace in the entire region - PA has never stopped anti-Israel propaganda! Martyrdom is glorified in the press and in mosques, kindergartens and schools by both Fatah and Hamas.

The Oslo agreement expired several years ago. It had not brought peace, but exposed lies and treachery.Instead of negotiating peace, the PA regularly walked from the negotiation table in pursuit of hypocritical international support in order to pressure Israel for more concessions, giving nothing in return. This agreement was dead on arrival! It must be viewed by Israel as a lesson, which many terror experts insist on: Never negotiate with terrorists! So-called Palestinian people are the fake nation which was forged by Arabs in 1964 in order to destroy Israel. They are not interested in peace with Israel. They are occupiers of Jewish land! Israel must realise that the only way to resolve the conflict is to utilise self-reliance and determination to end the occupation of Jewish land by Arabs and so-called Palestinians. The painful experience of the peace process has proven one obvious point - Arabs will never have peace with Israel! Israel has done everything possible to accommodate the peace with this terror infested entity. Any other country or nation would not even bother. Therefore, it is time to reclaim our land, transfer enemy population to Sinai or to other numerous Arabs states, those who claim to care so much about poor Palestinians. (Why not them? - In order to have peace, Israel forcibly removed 8,500 Jews from Gaza. It did not stop terror attacks. The PA insists that all Jews must be removed from Judea and Samaria! So why not remove them from Jewish land instead?)

This is the only option Israel has. The alternative is annihilation! Arabs respect strong opponents. It is integral to their national makeup. When Israel demonstrated its military superiority it was respected not just by Arab states, but by most countries, including the Soviet Union. It is time to stop being a little ghetto Jew, end the policy of appeasement of international anti-Semitic bigots who will never be content with Jews, and stand up for our own rights.Palestine is the Eretz-Israel - the Land of Israel! It is the Jewish ancestral land, which was promised to Jews by G-d and even by resolution of the League of Nation in 1922. It is time to take it back!

Nothing Concrete Expected When Quartet Ambassadors Meet OCT 7,11

Ambassadors from the Middle East Quartet (United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia) are scheduled to meet, Sunday, in Brussels. The Associated Press quoted EU spokesman Michael Mann saying, on Friday, The purpose is to review progress and keep up the momentum, with the overall objective of encouraging the parties to return to negotiations. The AP cited an un-named diplomat as saying, We don't expect anything concrete to come out of (Sunday's) meeting.Israel said last week that it accepts the Quartet's invitation to resume talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA). The PA says it won't resume talks unless Israel stops construction and enters talks based on borders in effect before the start of the Six-Day War in 1967.

PA Seeking to Amend Paris Agreement-Accusing Israel of using economic pressure as political blackmail,PA officials are seeking to amend the Paris Agreement on funds. By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 10/5/2011, 8:17 PM

Officials in Ramallah on Tuesday tacitly admitted their claims the Palestinian Authority would provide a solvent state for residents in its enclaves without US aid or Israeli cooperation were false. With international donors reneging on aid pledges the cash-strapped PA has been unable to pay its salaries and bills, a situation now acute amid repercussions stemming from PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas' insistence on seeking a unilateral declaration of statehood outside the Oslo framework at the United Nations. The freeze of a bloc of $200 million in aid dollars by US lawmakers and commensurate freeze in tax credit transfers by Israel has infuriated the PA who says Israel is resorting to political blackmail and now wants to amend the Paris Agreement which stipulates funding provisions for the PA.President Mahmoud Abbas or the PLO will shortly issue a decree to set up a national committee of experts to review the Paris Agreement and assign another committee to negotiate an amendment to this agreement, Palestinian Economic Expert Nasr Abdul Karim, told Gulf News. The Israelis need to differentiate between political and economic issues, the Paris Agreement is no longer practical for the Palestinians, he stressed. The Paris Agreement, however, operates under the aegis of the Olso Accords, which both Israeli and PA officials have threatened to scrap in recent months amid the growing row over the PA bid at the UN - a direct violation of the Oslo Accords' proscription on unilateral moves by either party.

Additionally, observers note Israeli displeasure with Abbas' antics at the world body - also described as political blackmail and a propaganda stunt by officials in Tel Aviv - makes amending the Paris Agreement highly unlikely.Nor, observers say, does Israel have any incentive to sacrifice a powerful bargaining chip it can use to force PA officials back to the negotiating table.

Abbas Advancing Israeli Plots'-A senior Iranian lawmaker has accused PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas of advancing Israel's plots to curb Intifada and the Arab Spring.By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 10/5/2011, 9:15 PM

Is Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas a Zionist quisling? Senior Iranian legislator Seyed Mohammad Javad Abtahi said Wednesday the answer was yes when he accused Abbas of advancing Israel's plots to disintigrate the PA and undermine the so-called Arab Spring. The game Abbas has started is a part of Israelis' plots to curb Intifada and undermine the Islamic countries' uprisings and awakening,Abtahi told Iran's semi-official Fars news agency. He rejected Abbas's commitment to a two-state solution, which he said were intended to disintegrate the PA, and said any negotiations or compromise on Palestine was totally unacceptable.Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Saturday also rejected a two-state solution to the Mideast conflict, calling instead for a unilateral Palestinian referendum to decide the future of Israel. We neither propose dumping the migrant Jews in the sea nor the UN arbitration, rather our proposal includes a referendum to be participated by all Palestinians,Khamenei said.Today the West is standing on a crossroad and it should either leave its age-old bullying and recognize the rights of the Palestinians or wait for harder blows in the near future,Khameini added.

High Court: Why Check Arabs More Thoroughly at Airport?-Nation's supreme judges are surprised to learn that Arabs are treated with more suspicion at Ben Gurion Airport.By Gil Ronen First Publish: 10/6/2011, 12:09 AM

The judges of the High Court for Justice repeatedly asked the State's representatives in a hearing Wednesday why Arabs are checked more thoroughly at Ben Gurion Airport than non-Arabs. The State representatives failed to answer the question in a way that satisfied the judges. The State's attorneys told the court that 0.5% of the country's population undergo more stringent checks than others at the airport. Court President Dorit Beinisch was shocked. She asked: Is the population divided into two categories? Are there two kinds of citizens in the security check? In the course of the session, Beinisch agreed to let the State attorneys show her classified material regarding changes made in the security check setup, ex parte. The Court decided to postpone its decision regarding the case.

Attorney Awni Bana, who represented the ultra-leftist Association for Civil Rights in Israel along with Advocate Dan Yakir, said after the session: The court took seriously the central claim we made in the motion, that the subject is not how the more intensive security check in conducted, but the very labeling of an entire populace as dangerous.Bana added that to this day, the Court has never given its approval to policies that discriminate between citizens, because of a security risk that stems from their nationality. The questions that the motion raises place before the Court a question of principle: is the State allowed to attach a high danger label to a group within its citizens, not because of concrete and tangible danger and suspicions regarding all its members, but solely because of the group's national-ethnic origin. We hope the Court does not create a precedent in this case.Yakir added that the invisibility of the security check that the Arab passengers undergo may be less humiliating, but this does not console them. Their very labeling is what is humiliating.

Police, IDF Destroy Jewish Outpost-State carries out demolition at Givat Gal Yosef, near Shilo. MK Ben Ari slams Netanyahu, Barak.By Gil Ronen First Publish: 10/5/2011, 10:59 PM

Forces from the Israel Police and IDF Civil Administration raided the outpost of Givat Gal Yosef, not far from Shilo in the Binyamin region north of Jerusalem, Wednesday evening.Jewish residents were not caught by complete surprise, as large forces had been seen leaving the Shaar Binyamin police station in the direction of Hizme and other junctions in the Binyamin area. These forces were apparently put in place in order to prevent Jewish reinforcements from joining the residents of Givat Gal Yosef and making the demolition more difficult.MK Michael Ben Ari (National Union) reacted to the destruction and said that it is too bad that on the eve of Yom Kippur, Netanyahu and Barak are sowing destruction and creating tension of the ground. The Chairman of the Jewish Home, Minister Daniel Hershkovitz, conducted a joint tour of Beit El and the neighborhood of Givat Assaf Tuesday, together with National Union Chairman MK Yaakov Katz (Ketzaleh).Hershkovitz voiced hope that Givat Assaf would not be razed. The Jewish Home has many red lines as regards remaining in the coalition, he contended.

9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Erdogan: Israel a Nuclear Threat to Mideast-Turkish prime minister accuses Israel of being a nuclear threat to the Mideast; claims Israeli towns have not been bombarded by Hamas.By Gavriel Queenann First Publish: 10/5/2011, 7:43 PM

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that Israel is a threat to the Mideast because it possesses nuclear weapons, AFP reports.I right now see Israel as a threat for its region, because it has the atomic bomb, Erdogan said in a foreign policy speech during an official visit to South Africa. He also accused Israel of committing state terrorism.Israel maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity and has never officially admitted to having a nuclear arsenal. Nor, observers note, if Israel does possess nuclear weapons, did it employ them even in the darkest hours of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.Turkey downgraded relations with one-time ally Israel amid a fit of pique over conclusions of the UN Palmer Report, which concluded Israel's blockade of Gaza is legal and appropriate, with Ankara saying Israel's willingness to express regret for the deaths of Turkish nationals during the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident was insufficient.During the 31 May 2010 incidents Turkish agitators aboard the Mavi Marmara attempted to lynch Israeli naval commandoes who boarded the vessel. When less-than-lethal weapons proved insufficient to stop the threat the commandoes switched to live fire, killing 9.

Last month, Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador and froze military ties and defense trade deals. Ankara has also threatened to send warships to escort any Turkish vessels trying to reach Hamas-ruled Gaza.I have asked many Israeli officials, how many Israelis, have been killed by rockets launched from Gaza and Palestine. I could not get an answer, Erdogan told his audience.Yet tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed from bombs that have rained down on them from Israel. You sleep at night peacefully and secure, he said. Yet Palestinians can't find a single trace of peace in Palestine.Statistics for the number of rockets and mortars fired at Israeli communities in southern Israel – as well as injuries and causalities resulting there from – are released monthly to the public via the Internet by Israel's Foreign Ministry, the Shin Bet, and private advocacy groups.

SHH 1949 LINES WOULD BE ISRAELS DOOM-FATAH LEADER

Fatah Official: Shhh! 1949 Lines would be Israel's Doom-Senior Fatah man calls Obama, Netanyahu dirtbags, explains how Israel would come to an end if exits Judea and Samaria.By Chana Ya'ar First Publish: 10/2/2011, 5:41 PM

A senior member of the Fatah Central Committee led by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in an interview referred to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and U.S. President Barack Obama, as dirtbags, and explained how causing Israel to leave Judea and Samaria would spell its doom.Abbas Zaki told the interviewer that any final status agreement between Israel and the PA should be based upon the borders of June 4, 1967... everybody knows that the greater goal cannot be accomplished in one go.Israel claims that Abbas and numerous other PA Arab officials have made it clear in many ways that the greater and ultimate goal has been and continues to be the elimination of the State of Israel altogether, but this was an outright statement to that effect. Zaki made his remarks during an interview on the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite television channel, which reaches millions of Arabs worldwide.

A video clip of Zaki's remarks was translated by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute, a media watchdog organization that monitors Arabic-language media. If Israel withdraws from Jerusalem, evacuates the 650,000 settlers, and dismantles the wall, what will become of Israel? It will come to an end, Zaki predicted.Who is nervous, upset and angry now? Netanyahu, Lieberman, and Obama... All those dirtbags, he said scornfully. Why even get into this? We should be happy to see Israel upset. He noted that reaching the greater goal would be impossible initially, and that revealing it would not be smart: If we say that we want to wipe Israel out... C'mon, it's too difficult. It's not [acceptable] policy to say so. Don't say these things to the world,he warned. Keep it to yourself. For public consumption, Zaki advised Arabs to stick to the party line: I want the resolutions that everybody agrees upon. I say to the world, to the Quartet, and to America: You promised, and you turned out to be liars. In his recent speech to the 66th United Nations General Assembly, Abbas referred to Israel as the land of Jesus and Mohammed, with no mention whatsoever of the ancient history of the Jews who dwelled therein, preceding both, and who have maintained a continuous presence in the land to this day.MEMRI has translated recent remarks by Fatah officials, in which they are heard slamming Obama's speech of support for Israel at the United Nations General Assembly.

Dep. Foreign Minister: Zaki's Remarks Prove Us Right-Ayalon after Fatah man's gaffe: This is less about the creation of a PA state than it is about the destruction of the one Jewish State.By Gil Ronen First Publish: 10/2/2011, 8:51 PM

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon reacted Sunday to the statement by a senior Fatah man that exposes the organization's plan to destroy Israel in stages, while pretending to seek a peaceful compromise. As I have said on many occasions, said Ayalon, here is further proof that the conflict is not about territory. The Palestinians have been offered a state repeatedly for several decades and have rejected each and every offer. This is less about the creation of a Palestinian state than it is about the destruction of the one Jewish State. The statement by Abbas Zaki, a senior member of the Fatah Central Committee led by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, is one of the most damning statements ever made by an Arab official regarding Fatah's stages plan. The interview was aired on Al Jazeera on September 23, at about the same time that Abbas was presenting the case for independent statehood in the United Nations. Possibly the hype around Abbas's speech gave Zaki confidence that his statement would go by unnoticed – as it largely has.

If Israel withdraws from Jerusalem, evacuates the 650,000 settlers, and dismantles the wall, what will become of Israel? It will come to an end,Zaki predicted.
He noted that reaching the greater goal would be impossible initially, and that revealing it would not be smart: If we say that we want to wipe Israel out... C'mon, it's too difficult. It's not [acceptable] policy to say so. Don't say these things to the world,he warned. Keep it to yourself.

When Will Israel's Foreign Ministry Stop Supporting UNRWA? Historian Moshe Dann points out that the West will continue to fund UNRWA as long as Israel's own Foreign Ministry continues to support it.By Chana Ya'ar First Publish: 10/2/2011, 8:56 AM

As long as Israel's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to support the United Nations agency that aids Palestinian Authority Arabs, the U.S. and Canada are not going to cease funding UNRWA's activities. So writes historian and journalist Moshe Dann, who advocated in a blog posted Sunday for FrontPage Mag that Israel end its own support for the U.N. agency.Supporters of Palestinian statehood prominently display 194 next to their flag, Dann pointed out in his article. That number refers not only to its proposed place in the U.N. next-in-line, but their goal. Citing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) as guarantor of the right to leave and return to one's country, they use that to justify the 'Palestinian right of return.

But there is no such right,Dann continued. UNGA Resolution 1943 (1948) refers to all refugees, Jewish as well as Arab, and does not confer automatic rights to return. Repatriation (or return) was suggested as one option, but this is based on conditions that Arabs have never fulfilled.UNRWA, Dann contends, is at the core of the thorny problem of the so-called Palestinian Arab right of return, due to its anti-Israel agenda, holding the Jewish State solely responsible for the plight of those who left their homes during Israel's defensive wars. The countries to which they fled, and which have forever refused to accept them as citizens, have never been held accountable in the same way Israel is expected to absorb its own refugees.
Jordan is the only one of all the Arab nations who granted the original refugees citizenship. Most Palestinian refugees in other Arab countries are blocked from getting a decent education, going to college, or applying for skilled jobs. It is a built-in system to create human weapons to aim at the State of Israel, one that has been inordinately effective over the decades, aided and abetted by UNRWA.

But why?

A recent example of the double standard applied to Israel is the world's expectation that the Jewish State absorb and care for thousands of Sudanese and Eritrean infiltrators that have illegally crossed the country's southern border with Egypt. They are doing it even now, in fact – a swelling population of irrelevant immigrants Israel can ill afford.A great hue and cry is raised whenever the subject of repatriation is considered for these illegal infiltrators, which Israel with its meager resources is not equipped to care for.Still, the country has somehow managed to wrestle with the problem, despite the overwhelming objections of most of the communities in which the refugees are eventually settled. What then of the millions of so-called Palestinian refugees – actually the descendants of the original refugees, those who were encouraged to leave their homes, by the very Arab nations to whom they fled? The question, according to Dann, is why Israel's own Foreign Ministry supports UNRWA, an agency whose humanitarian work he contends can be assumed by the U.N. High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), which assists all other refugees. Why continue to support a separate organization only for those who claim to be Palestinian refugees and their descendants? Israel's support for UNRWA, writes Dann, prevents donor countries from insisting on changing this picture – thus enabling one of the most anti-Israel organizations to flourish. The agency, he points out, works with the members of terrorist groups such as Hamas, Fatah, PFLP and the Army of Islam, a group linked to the global jihadist Al Qaeda terrorist organization.

UNRWA provides free education, medical services, food and social and cultural centers through 60 refugee camps – actually towns, and in some cases some cities – throughout the region.Half of UNRWA's annual budget, which totals nearly one billion dollars, is provided by the U.S., the rest by Canada and European nations. What then is the incentive for PA Arabs in these areas, the terror gangs who recruit them, and the government who nurtures them, to change?

EU Can't Entice Eastern Partnership States without Membership-Donald Tusk may benefit electorally from the EU Warsaw Summit but in terms of tangibles it produced little.By Amiel Ungar First Publish: 10/2/2011, 8:53 PM

The European Union summit in Warsaw over the weekend featured a dialogue between the EU and the former Soviet states of the Ukraine, Belarus Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia . This forum is called the Eastern Partnership and was originally conceived in 2009 by Poland and Sweden before the European Union became preoccupied with its own economic difficulties. Its objective is to draw these states closer to the EU and help them grow economically and democratically.Poland, the country hosting the gathering as rotating president of the EU, has a vested interest in the partnership's success. Despite improved relations between Warsaw and Moscow, Poland still casts a wary eye on its historic enemy. Democratic buffer states between Poland and Russia who are firmly out of Russia's orbit represent a strategic objective of Polish foreign policy. With the possible exception of the Ukraine, which may yet get an association agreement by the end of the year, the Eastern Partnership appears to be dead. One of the major enticements of the EU in the past for new applicants was the prospect of generous economic assistance. Currently, the European Union is being pressed by the member countries to cut rather than increase its budget.Secondly, members of the European Union who are cultivating ties with Russia for the sake of energy security and increased trade, are not interested in stirring up trouble with the old-new master of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin. A further EU encroachment on what used to be the Soviet Union would be frowned upon by Putin, who regards the dissolution of the Soviet state as a tragedy.

The EU can hold out little prospect for future membership – a membership earned by greater democracy and diminished corruption. Ukraine may be the exception due to the country's size and strategic location, but in Brussels and Kiev nobody is talking about imminent membership.Belarus boycotted the meeting because President Alexander Lukashenko was barred from attending due to his violations of democratic and human rights, and also because the conclave was openly critical of the regime. Despite the EU's economic problems it still dangled the carrot of substantial economic assistance if the Belarus regime freed political prisoners and conducted free elections.Brussels is counting on the difficult economic situation in Belarus. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a news conference For the first time we see a situation in which the EU, very decisively and in a spirit of solidarity, makes help for Belarus conditional on tangible changes. These are not radical changes. This is the bare minimum that any European person expects.Lukashenko has turned down the assistance, because he is not likely to survive a free election. He accused the EU of grandstanding on Belarus to deflect attention away from its own problems.More embarrassing for the EU was the fact that the other guests refused to sign a declaration condemning repression in Belarus.Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was told that the EU would look badly if the trial of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko ends up with a guilty verdict and imprisonment, but the Ukrainian president was also invited to Brussels for talks this month. The summit, however, was a useful backdrop for Prime Minister Tusk in the run-up to the Polish elections scheduled for next Sunday. Tusk's Civic Platform Party is strongly pro-Brussels while the opposition Law and Justice Party is Euroskeptic.

Senior Doctor: Entire Hospital Departments about to Shut Down-As the resignation of medical residents is about to take effect, hospital officials are warning of a medical catastrophe.By Yoni Kempinski & Gil Ronen First Publish: 10/2/2011, 8:18 PM

Resignations of hundreds of residents in Israel's hospitals are about to take effect in the next few days, and a senior physician warns that his hospital may have to close down most of its wards.Prof. Ehud Grossman, Director of the Departement of Internal Medicine, Sheba Medical Center, told Arutz Sheva: We don’t see a way that we can manage without the residents. I believe that we will need to close some of the departments, and out of six departments maybe we will be remaining with two. We will be able just to save lives and that's it.Grossman recommended that patients go to other hospitals, where fewer residents have resigned. He said that he understands the residents' anger because the agreement signed by their representatives and the State is a catastrophic one.

Egypt Fears Israel Plans to Seize Control of Sinai-Egyptian officials are expressing fears that Israel plans to seize control of the Sinai Peninsula. By Chana Ya'ar First Publish: 10/2/2011, 3:57 PM

Egyptian officials are expressing fears that Israel may seize control over the Sinai Peninsula. The warning came from Egyptian Ambassador Yasser Othman, Cairo's representative to Ramallah, who told the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency that recent remarks by Jerusalem officials indicate the presence of an Israeli plan aimed at controlling the Sinai.Othman added, We should be ready for the Israeli plan to take Sinai in the coming period. The Egyptian envoy's remarks followed interviews by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the eve of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, in which both characterized the situation in Sinai as troubling. Both men expressed concern over the security threats that have escalated since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak in the Tahrir Square Revolution in February. There are those seeking to use Sinai not merely as a staging area for attacks from Gaza, but who are seeking to use Gaza as a staging area for attacks from Sinai,Netanyahu told reporters. This is obviously a very troubling development. He added at the time that while both Cairo and Washington D.C. shared Jerusalem's concerns, Israel is taking action on its side of the border to stymie any threat.

Increased Egyptian tanks and troops in the region were approved by Israel in mid-August for the first time in decades – a strong indicator of just how deep the concern is on both sides. That concern was dramatically increased following an August 18 multi-pronged terrorist attack along the border on Route 12, slightly north of Eilat. The 20-member cell killed eight Israelis and wounded at least 40 others; in the melee, six Egyptian security officers were also killed by Israeli forces as they fired on terrorists.Othman told Ma'an that the increased Egyptian military presence would prove more than sufficient to maintain control without Israel's intervention. But Israel's defense minister noted, although the region is an important asset for every Egyptian leadership... I don't think that the leadership is in full control. He added that the protesters who toppled Mubarak's government are now also engaged in a power struggle with the military council that currently leads the country.Israel's Counter Terrorism Bureau has repeatedly warned citizens to stay out of Sinai, noting that forces hostile to Israel, and to the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty are currently exploiting a security vacuum in the area.
The Egyptian-Israeli natural gas pipeline that originates from northern Sinai was attacked last week for the sixth time since February. Three men opened fire at a pumping station near el-Arish, damaging the pipeline and sending flames shooting some 15 meters (45 feet) into the air, according to an eyewitness quoted by the Reuters news agency. El-Arish is located just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the border with Israel.

FAST OF GEDALIAH IN ISRAEL TODAY

Laws and Customs - 10 Days of Repentance; Shabbat Shuvah
http://www.chabad.org/calendar/holidays_cdo/aid/672023/jewish/2011-Holidays.htm

The 10-day period beginning on Rosh Hashanah and ending on Yom Kippur is known as the Ten Days of Repentance; this is the period, say the sages, of which the prophet speaks when he proclaims (Isaiah 55:6) Seek G-d when He is to be found; call on Him when He is near. It is thus a most auspicious time to rectify the failings and missed opportunities of the past and positively influence the coming year. Psalm 130 and other special inserts and additions are included in our daily prayers during these days.

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, Shabbat of Return. The name derives from the Haftarah (reading from the prophets) for this Shabbat, which opens with the words (Hosea 14:2), Return O Israel unto the L-rd your G-d... According to master Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria (Ari), the seven days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (which will always include one Sunday, one Monday, etc.) correspond to the seven days of the week. The Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur includes within itself all Sundays of the year; the Monday embodies all Mondays, and so on. Shabbat Shuvah is thus the archetypal Shabbat -- the juncture in time at which we are empowered to influence every Shabbat of our year.

PSALMS 130:1-8
1 A Song of degrees. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Day One - Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Courtesy of MeaningfulLife.com
[The sages say:] Yom Kippur atones only for those who repent.
Rabbi [Judah HaNassi] says: Yom Kippur atones whether one repents or one does not repent.Talmud, Shevuot 13a-On Yom Kippur, the day itself atones... as it is written, For on this day, it shall atone for you.

Mishneh Torah, Laws of Repentance 1:3

Citing the prophet Isaiah's call, Seek G-d when He may be found, call upon Him when He is near, the Talmud says: These are the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These ten days, called The Ten Days of Teshuvah, are the most solemn days of the year -- days designated for soul-searching and return (teshuvah) to G-d. G-d is near--more attentive to our prayers, more accepting of our repentance, than on the other days of the year. But are there ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishrei, while Yom Kippur is on the tenth of that month. Thus, the Ten Days of Teshuvah include Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Indeed, teshuvah is a dominant theme in the observances and prayers of both festivals. Yet the Talmud, in the above-quoted passage and in other places, speaks of the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.Chassidic teaching explains that while Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are themselves days of teshuvah, they each embody a principle that goes beyond the concept of return: the essence of Rosh Hashanah precedes teshuvah, while the essence of Yom Kippur supersedes teshuvah. Thus, the Ten Days of Teshuvah include the days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and, at the same time, are the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The Virtue in Sin

The Torah describes the people of Israel as the nation close to Him.What does it mean that we are close to G-d? There are three fundamental aspects to our relationship with the Almighty and the manner in which it is expressed in our lives.
On the most elementary level, we achieve connection with G-d through our observance of the mitzvot, the Divine commandments. The mitzvot embody the will of G-d; by observing the mitzvot and making their fulfillment the substance and aim of our lives, our souls and bodies become vehicles of the Divine will. But when a person violates the Divine will, G-d forbid, he uncovers an even deeper dimension of his bond with G-d. The connection created by the mitzvah is exactly that -- a connection created between two separate entities. Taken on its own, this connection does not point to any intrinsic bond between the two. In fact, it implies that the natural state of the doer of the mitzvah is one of separateness and distinction from G-d -- a state which is overcome by the act of the mitzvah, which bridges the gulf between the mortal and the Divine. But when a person transgresses a Divine command, a deeper bond with G-d comes to light. His inner equilibrium is disturbed; his soul finds no peace and is driven to compensate for its devastated identity with material excesses or profane spiritual quests. His transgressions highlight the fact that there is nothing more unnatural than a soul estranged from her G-d.Teshuvah is a soul's experience of the agony of disconnection from its source and its channeling of this agony to drive its return to G-d. Thus, our sages have said that the sins of a baal teshuvah (returnee) are transformed into merits, and that he attains a level of relationship with G-d on which even the perfectly righteous cannot stand. His transgressions become virtues, for the distance and disconnection they created have become the impetus for greater closeness and deeper connection. His sins have provoked -- and his teshuvah has actualized -- a dimension of his soul's connection to G-d which a perfectly righteous life never touches.

The One of the Year

But there is also a third, even deeper, dimension to our bond with G-d.The two types of connection discussed above have one thing in common: they both allow for the possibility of disconnection. The mitzvah relates to the level on which our finite and mortal nature set us apart from G-d -- a state of affairs which the mitzvah comes to overcome. The transgression makes the opposite point (that connection with G-d is the natural state of every soul) with its very dissevering of this connection, teshuvah being the consequential effort to restore the natural bond.
Ultimately, however, there is a quintessential bond between the soul and G-d that is immutable. On the deepest level of our being, there can be no disconnection, natural or unnatural. This underlying oneness with G-d is the root from which the other two levels of connection stem. Every time we do a mitzvah, we draw from this quintessential unity with G-d the power to overcome our natural apartness and connect to G-d through the fulfillment of His will. Every time we sin and experience the agony of disconnection from G-d, this is but another expression of the fact that, in essence, our soul is one with its Creator. And it is this unity with G-d that empowers us to restore our relationship with G-d -- on the level on which our transgressions do affect it -- through the process of teshuvah. These, however, are only glimmers of a deeper truth, expressions of unity rising to the surface of a life that is perceptively distinct and apart. But one day each year, our quintessential oneness with G-d shines forth in all its glory. This day is Yom Kippur, which the Torah refers to as the one of the year.

Yom Kippur is more than a day of teshuvah. Teshuvah, return, implies that, in the interim, one has been somewhere else; Yom Kippur is a day on which we are empowered to actualize that dimension of our soul whose unity with G-d has never been disturbed in the first place. Thus, our sages say that on Yom Kippur, the day itself atones. There is even an opinion, held by Rabbi Judah HaNassi, that the day itself atones even for those who do not repent their sins. For on this day, we achieve atonement for our sins not only by exploiting them as an impetus for return, but also by uncovering that element of self that is never touched by sin at all.

Foundation and End

During the Ten Days of Teshuvah, G-d makes Himself more accessible to us -- on all three levels of connection discussed above. It is a period in which special mitzvot are commanded to us (sounding the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, fasting on Yom Kippur, etc.), opening unique avenues of connection to G-d via the fulfillment of His will.It is a period of heightened opportunity for teshuvah -- a time when our souls are more sensitive to the break from G-d caused by our transgressions and more driven to return. But the foundation and objective of all connection with G-d is the quintessential bond which requires no deed to effect it and which no deed can affect. In the Ten Days of Teshuvah, the foundation is laid on Rosh Hashanah and attains its ultimate realization on Yom Kippur. The defining quality of Rosh Hashanah is that it is the day we crown G-d as king over us. What does it mean that we accept G-d as our king? The king-subject metaphor is one of many employed by the Torah to describe our relationship with G-d, which is also referred to in terms of the relationship between husband and wife, shepherd and flock, master and disciple, among others. The king-subject relationship is unique in that it is not defined by equivocal criteria (love, nurture, intellectual appreciation, etc.), but rather involves the abnegation of the subject's very self to the sovereign. On Rosh Hashanah we relate to G-d as our king, affirming our bond to Him as the very essence of our identity.

Our acceptance of G-d as king is the basis for our other levels of connection with G-d -- mitzvot and teshuvah. The concept of a Divine commandment has meaning only after one has accepted G-d as the authority over one's life; and a transgression is a transgression (and thus an impetus to teshuvah) only because it violates a Divine command. Thus, the Ten Days of Teshuvah are defined as the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They are preceded by Rosh Hashanah, since our submission to the Divine sovereignty is the basis for teshuvah -- including the teshuvah we do on the two days of Rosh Hashanah (which are themselves part of the ten). And they are superseded by Yom Kippur, since Yom Kippur, in addition to itself being a day of teshuvah, is the ultimate realization of the soul's quintessential oneness with G-d -- a oneness which teshuvah expresses and from which teshuvah draws its power, but which transcends the very concept of return.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Iran assails two-state solution for Palestinians
APBy ALI AKBAR DAREINI - Associated Press | AP – OCT 1,11

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's supreme leader assailed a two state solution for Israel and the Palestinians on Saturday, saying the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations is doomed to fail.Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Palestinians should not limit themselves to seeking a country based on the pre-1967 borders — which would implicitly recognize Israel — because all land belongs to Palestinians.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked the U.N. Security Council to recognize an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip — areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.Israel and the U.S. oppose the U.N. bid, saying there is no substitute for direct negotiations. But with Israel continuing to build settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, Abbas says there is no point in talking.Iran doesn't recognize Israel and considers it an archenemy.Khamenei, who spoke at a pro-Palestinian conference in Tehran, once again called Israel a cancerous tumor that should be removed.Iran supports the militant Palestinian Hamas group, which rules Gaza and which does not back the statehood bid pushed by Abbas and his Western-backed Fatah.

Our claim is freedom of Palestine, not part of Palestine. Any plan that partitions Palestine is totally rejected, Khamenei told the gathering. Palestine spans from the river (Jordan) to the sea (Mediterranean), nothing less.Khamenei claimed that a two state solution would mean giving in to the demand of the Zionists and that it would trample the rights of the Palestinian people to live on their land.

Palestinians plan to oust Tony Blair from his role as Middle East peace envoy over bias to Israel-PLO motion to declare former PM persona non grata to be held later this week By Kirsty Walker and Phoebe Greenwood Last updated at 1:42 AM on 30th September 2011

Tony Blair’s job as a Middle East peace envoy is in jeopardy after officials in the Palestinian Authority accused him of acting like an extreme Israeli diplomat.
Senior figures in the Palestine Liberation Organisation are reported to be planning to sever all contact with the former prime minister. They described Mr Blair as persona non grata and said they were looking to isolate the former PM so his position became untenable on the international stage.Mr Blair has been viewed with an element of distrust by some Palestinians ever since his appointment as the envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East – the mediating body comprising the United States, the EU, the UN and Russia. He was handed the job the day he left Downing Street in June 2007. But antagonism has mounted over allegations that he lobbied European powers to vote against a Palestinian bid for statehood which was submitted to the UN last week. One senior Palestinian official told the Daily Mail yesterday: He does not represent the international community but works according to his own opinion, which he shares with the more extreme Israelis. We see him as an Israeli diplomat.

We will not be unhappy to see his back but when he leaves is something for the Quartet to decide.Another added: There is no one within the Palestinian leadership that supports or likes or trusts Tony Blair, particularly because of the very damaging role he played during our UN bid.He is considered persona non grata in Palestine. Although we can’t prevent him from coming here, we can hopefully minimise the role he can play because he is not a mediator, he is totally biased on one side.Mr Blair has been based between London and the luxurious American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem since leaving 10 Downing Street in 2007.A storm of suspicion and disapproval has been building among Palestinians since his first days in the region. Many were surprised and disappointed when he failed to speak out against Israel’s invasion of Gaza in January 2009, which left as many as 1,417 Palestinians dead.
Anger: Blair's failure to address Israel's continuing building of settlements in the West Bank was key to his draft proposal being rejected.Anger: Blair's failure to address Israel's continuing building of settlements in the West Bank was key to his draft proposal being rejected. Many also accuse Mr Blair of placing his business interests above his diplomatic responsibilities. A conflict of interest was posed by his £2million-a-year job as consultant for investment bank JP Morgan and his executive role at Tony Blair Associates.Labour MP Paul Flynn said: There is no question in my mind that Tony Blair is incredibly sympathetic to the Israeli cause and throughout his time as an envoy there has been a question mark about whether he fully understands the position of the Arab countries. He is not the honest broker that he pretends to be.A spokesman for the Palestinian Authority said its negotiators often talked to people they did not like.A spokesman for Mr Blair insisted he had no plans to leave the Middle East, adding: He is there for the long term, as he has been from day one.

Merkel questions new Israeli settlements
APAP – OCT 1,11

BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the decision to green-light new Jewish housing units in east Jerusalem has raised doubts that the Israeli government is interested in starting serious negotiations with the Palestinians, her spokesman said Friday.Steffen Seibert said in a statement that Merkel called Netanyahu to tell him it is now necessary to dispel those doubts.Seibert said Merkel told Netanyahu it is important to start negotiations as soon as possible on a two-state solution and that in the meantime both sides must refrain from provocative acts.Germany enjoys close relations with both Israel and the Palestinians, and has been frequently involved in acting as a neutral party to help negotiations between the two sides.Merkel has also been a strong supporter of the need for a negotiated two-state solution. But in the latest setback, Israel announced Tuesday that it has approved the new construction in the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo in southeast Jerusalem. The Palestinians condemned the plan, and the U.S., European Union and United Nations all swiftly expressed their disappointment over the settlements, which raised already heightened tensions after last week's Palestinian move to seek U.N. membership.

The Palestinians have demanded that Israel halt all settlement construction in east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians claim as their future capital, and the adjacent West Bank — territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war — as a condition for resuming peace talks.Since capturing east Jerusalem, Israel has annexed the area and ringed it with about 10 Jewish enclaves that are meant to solidify its control. Gilo, which is close to the Palestinian city of Bethlehem, is among the largest, with about 50,000 residents. Israel's annexation of east Jerusalem has not been internationally recognized.
