SAVING SERGEANT NETANYAHU

Saving Sergeant Netanyahu

How Israel’s future prime minister was nearly killed in his first battle, as recalled by the comrades who rescued him while under Egyptian fire in the waters of the Suez Canal

October 25, 2012, 4:21 pm 0- THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
On May 13, 1969 Sgt. Benjamin Netanyahu made his way west through the marshlands of northwestern Sinai. He was seated in an armored half-track. Night had just fallen and the future prime minister would soon be in a battle for his life in the warm, tidal waters of the Suez Canal.Speaking before a joint session of Congress in 2011, Netanyahu made a terse and uncharacteristic mention of that evening. “I remember what it was like before we had peace,” he told the ardently hospitable crowd. ”I was nearly killed in a firefight inside the Suez Canal. I mean that literally.”

Israel’s prime minister, who was inducted into the army two months after the end of the Six-Day War and returned from MIT to fight in the Yom Kippur War, was twice wounded in battle but has never been closer to death than on that night, 43 years ago. It is hard to say that it shaped him as a leader, or made him into the man he is today. But surely his prolonged fight in those dark waters, struggling with an impossibly heavy pack and a life vest that wouldn’t inflate, as he got passed from hand to hand and was brought to the surface only to be lost again amid the deadly fire and the bedlam of an ambush, brought to the fore qualities he already possessed – fierce determination and uncommon strength. Those, along with the devotion of his friends, are what stood between him and a watery grave.Time has weathered and eroded the memories of the men who saved him. The details of the mission do not always match up. There are holes and contradictions within their stories. Some, for instance, remember the long retreat, in the face of the dawning day and the certain artillery fire that would follow, as spread out and disorderly, much “like Napoleon’s army leaving Russia.” Others say they rode back in the half-tracks. But all have a clear memory of that awful moment when the Egyptians lit up the night with machine gun fire, and all remember the “dreadfully slow” moments that ensued during which Netanyahu nearly sank to the bottom of Ferdinand de Lesseps’ manually-dug canal.

Joining the Unit

Netanyahu left 12th grade at Cheltenham High School in Pennsylvania several days before graduation and returned to Israel in June 1967. Ben, as he was known to his American friends, wanted to one-up his older brother, Yoni, and join not just the Paratroops but Sayeret Matkal (the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit), a commando unit whose name, like God’s, was not to be spoken. The Unit, then still making a name for itself as Israel’s top outfit and forever seared into the public consciousness for the daring raid on Entebbe that cost Yoni Netanyahu his life, was at the time a Skull and Bones-type society: you had to be tapped by someone else in the unit in order to be accepted.Netanyahu was also straight laced and uncompromising, to the point of being ‘a bit of a nerd,’ said Avi Feder, another team member.A Jerusalemite who had served in the unit recommended Netanyahu, and Uzi Yairi, the commander at the time, interviewed him at the induction center and approved the endorsement. Five months later, in January 1968, after completing Paratrooper training with the 202nd battalion, he and 19 other men showed up in Haifa, in civilian clothes, and met their officers, Amiram Levin, a future general and deputy director of the Mossad, and Rafi Bar-Lev, the nephew of the Chief of the General Staff. They were split into two groups of 10 – to this day, Sayeret Matkal always drafts two parallel teams that train with, and compete against, one another. The young men were given boots, uniforms and gear and then told to follow their officers. Levin, without much preamble, proceeded to hike for 120 kilometers (75 miles), mostly along a wet and stormy coastline, until they reached the gates of the unit. Netanyahu, Ronit Vered wrote in a 1997 biography, fell into a sewage ditch on the way but soldiered on.

Force and fortitude: those were the outstanding characteristics that nearly all of the men who knew him then used to describe him.

“He was incredibly motivated, really in an extraordinary way,” said Doron Salzberg, the manager of a gas station near Kibbutz Einat and one of the five remaining men from his team. “He was very strong, too, wouldn’t ever let anyone switch him when carrying the stretcher.”Netanyahu was also straight-laced and uncompromising, to the point of being “a bit of a nerd,” said Avi Feder, another team member. Feder recalled a long navigation hike they did together during a particularly hot day in the desert. Toward the end, they reached a water tank filled with dozens of gallons of water. Netanyahu initially refused to drink, Feder said, because he believed the water was meant for the other team even though there was more than enough for everyone. For Netanyahu, as someone who had spent his formative high school years in the US and as the son of a man who served as secretary to the father of Revisionist Zionism, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, integration into the unit, which was redolent with a kibbutz ethos, was not smooth. “I remember the look on his face, the way he went pale, when I told him what I thought about the Vietnam War,” said another team member, Michael Kovner, a leading Israeli artist and son of Abba Kovner, a poet, socialist, and partisan leader during WWII. “As far as I was concerned, the Vietcong were freedom fighters and the Americans were occupiers,” said Kovner, who was raised in Kibbutz Ein Hahoresh. Netanyahu, Kovner said, told him that he “had met” people who opposed the war in Vietnam but never anyone who actually rooted for the other side.

In March, just two months after entering the unit, two of the men in the team, Zohar Linik and David Ben-Chamo, were killed during a training accident. Netanyahu held Ben-Chamo in the back of a command car as Levin sped to the hospital. “He died in my arms,” Netanyahu said earlier this year during his Memorial Day speech.Several months after that, in September, Levin’s jeep rolled over a mine; he suffered third degree burns on his face. Alone in the field, it took him nine hours to crawl to help.In December 1968, the team took part in one of the IDF’s more bizarre missions: in response to several Palestinian attacks against El Al planes and passengers, a group of Paratroopers and commandos, in dress uniforms and with red berets on their heads, were airlifted to Beirut’s international airport, where they removed passengers from 14 Arab-owned civilian airplanes and blew up the planes.Still, by May 1969, they had yet to face enemy fire.

The Mission

On May 11, 1969, several dozen soldiers from the unit headed out from Baluza, in the Israeli-controlled Sinai near the Mediterranean Sea, to the Suez Canal. They crossed at night and waited in ambush for Egyptian troops. The War of Attrition was in full swing. The Israeli and the Egyptian armies faced each other on either side of the canal and each side sought to extract a price, in blood and psychological damage, from the other. Deadly artillery from the Egyptians was the norm. Israeli air attacks deep in Egypt were common. Egyptian commandos laid ambushes along the Israeli road that connected the frail and distant strongholds; Israelis responded in kind.

The troops waited for an Egyptian army vehicle, opened fire, killed the men inside, hurried back across the water and were home well before first light. The army top brass were so pleased with the results, they decided to do it again. After a day of rest and organization, several dozen soldiers from Sayeret Matkal and seven frogmen from the Naval Commandos left Baluza as evening thickened into darkness. There was no moon during the early hours of the night. They made their way to the canal on armored half-tracks.The soldiers gathered on the eastern bank of the canal, near al-Tina, and lay down on their stomachs as the frogmen began to work. Three of them each tied a thin parachute cord around their waists and slipped into the water. On the other side they probed the ground for mines and then scrambled up the bank and watched for enemy movement. Satisfied that there was none, they screwed an anchor deep into the dirt and pulled the cord taut. Slowly and silently, without so much as the dip of a paddle, the thin cord would pull Netanyahu and his mates across the water. The mission commander positioned three heavy machine gun squads on the east bank of the canal. One each to the north and south, to cut off possible reinforcement troops, and one opposite the crossing point. Then the 24 Sayeret Matkal soldiers and three Naval Commandos walked the already inflated rafts down a cobblestone ramp and into the water.Israel Asaf, later the deputy commander of the Naval Commandos, was the captain of Netanyahu’s boat. He fed the cord through a metal contraption at the helm of the raft and then through a wheel under his seat in the back. By peddling, the wheel spun and the boat glided across the water.

Amos Danieli, a member of Bar-Lev’s team, said that for the duration of the 180-meter crossing he “felt like a duck,” utterly susceptible to whatever the night might hold. There were three boats in total, with the middle boat in the lead. Netanyahu, seated second from the helm on the right side of the southernmost raft, alongside Doron Salzberg, carried a leaden crate of 7.62 ammunition and the brutal but unwieldy Belgian FN MAG machine gun, generally assigned to the strongest and most committed members of a platoon.
Slowly they moved across the water. Danieli and Salzberg, 43 years later, were still visibly impressed with the discipline and capabilities of the Egyptian troops. “There were all kinds of stories after ’67, about boots being left in the sand and that kind of thing, but from what I saw they were very skilled soldiers,” said Danieli.
The Egyptians soldiers, who Salzberg said received a commendation for their efforts that night, waited until the Israeli boats were at the western edge of their killing zone – far from the Israeli shore and still under the gaze of their guns. When the lead boat was 30 meters away, the Egyptians opened fire with long hard blasts of machine gun and anti-tank fire. In the lead boat, one of the best soldiers in the unit, Chaim Ben-Yona, a member of Bar-Lev’s team who had recently returned from officer’s school, was shot in the head. The impact was so forceful that it catapulted him out of the boat and into the water. Without so much as a noise, he was gone. One soldier later testified to having seen a flash of his boots as he went over. (Frogmen searched for his body throughout the night and into the day. Several days later the Egyptians found and returned his remains.)In Asaf’s boat, the one ferrying Netanyahu, the soldiers instinctively rushed toward the back of the boat, away from the oncoming fire. Slowly the nose of the boat rose into the air until all eight soldiers were dropped into the water.Netanyahu, Asaf said, made a last ditch effort to throw his machine gun on board as he went over.As soon as the soldiers were deposited in the water, the boat righted itself. On the Israeli side, 18 heavy machine guns sprayed tracers across the water, creating what Asaf called “a river of light” some six to 10 feet above his head. The reflection lit up the black water and he immediately counted heads.Netanyahu was in the water, nowhere near the lifeline, fighting to keep his head up. He was trapped by his pack, expiring under the weight of it. ‘For us soldiers in the unit,’ Danieli clarified, ‘ditching equipment into the water was the type of offense you’d be killed before doing’“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,” he showed me in a cafĂ© near Caesarea, punching the air with his index finger. Then he counted again, frantically, “like a mother goose” and realized he was missing one of his men. “When they are on the water, they are under my command. My responsibility,” said Asaf, who later commanded the Israeli landing at the mouth of the Awali River on the first night of the Lebanon War in 1982.Under fire, Asaf raced to the front of the boat, lay on his stomach, and looked out at the shimmering water. He saw a dimple surrounded by a larger circle – the type of impression that a rock might leave after being tossed in a well. Grabbing the line on the side of the boat, he leaned over and plunged his arm deep into the water, above the elbow. On that first attempt he hit the bushy curls and hard head of Benjamin Netanyahu. “He had curls like Yoni’s,” Asaf recalled.Netanyahu was motionless, dead weight. “He did not even grab my hand, which is what drowning men usually do. They cling fiercely,” Asaf said.Asaf hooked Netanyahu’s arm to the rescue line on the side of the boat and tried to propel them back to the eastern shore, a task that was complicated by the fact that the commando on the other side had cut the cord, perhaps so that the Egyptians would not reel in the boat. From Asaf’s perspective, Netanyahu was safe.Netanyahu’s ordeal, however, was far from over.
Asaf said that when he hooked Netanyahu’s arm through the lifeline, all eight men were hanging on to the side of the boat. The only question as far as he was concerned was how to get the untethered craft back to the eastern shore and away from the Egyptian fire.

As always in combat situations, however, the individual memories of the people who took part in the mission do not neatly fit together. Salzberg remembers jumping into the water under fire, not sliding in, and sitting on the left, not the right. He said that today he knew a Naval Commando had pulled Netanyahu out of the water by his hair, but that he had first encountered Netanyahu in the water, nowhere near the lifeline, fighting to keep his head up.Salzberg had been carrying an anti-tank mine and other heavy equipment in his pack. He managed to dive down, struggle free of the pack which was under his life vest, inflate the vest and come up for air.Netanyahu, though, was trapped by his pack, expiring under the weight of it. Salzberg wiggled it free, hoisted the pack out of the water, and threw it back on board. “For us soldiers in the unit, ditching equipment into the water was the type of offense you’d be killed before doing,” Danieli clarified. Then Salzberg went back to Netanyahu and tried to inflate his vest, which only partially filled with air — and anyway, it was insufficient to float the weight they carried. “He fought the whole time to keep his head above water and was already completely spent,” Salzberg said.Somehow, in the dark, under fire, amid the tug of the northerly currents in the canal, Salzberg, who spoke to me in short sentences and kept trying to minimize his role and end the story, lost his hold on his nearly drowned friend.Once again, Netanyahu was left to fend for himself.
Danieli was in the lead boat. He recalls the return to the Israeli shore, without Chaim Ben-Yona and under fire throughout, as an awful ordeal. Near the very western edge of the water, just as they were preparing to jump out of the boats, he saw the still-drowning Netanyahu. “Bibi was in the water, fighting for his life. I could barely pull him out. As though he didn’t want to cooperate. He was completely depleted.”

Danieli dragged Netanyahu, who seems to have kept himself alive by sheer willpower, out of the water and onto solid ground. They crawled up the stone ramp. A few feet away was a raised dirt bulwark that would provide cover. Before they could reach it, an RPG anti-tank rocket exploded beside them, the shrapnel absorbed by the soft earth. “There was a massive boom and Bibi went flying backward,” said Danieli, a writer and real estate developer who received me in his home in a teal t-shirt and red Crocs. At this point the stories diverge. Some recall taking the rafts with them; others say they were left behind. Salzberg, Danieli, and Kovner recall a brutal retreat through the mud swamps on the eastern shore of the canal, sinking in up to their knees with each step; Asaf and Feder remember riding home on half-tracks. Some said there was enemy fire throughout the operation, with Egyptian artillery tracking them all the way home. Others said there was but one blast in the beginning and little additional fire. What they all agreed on, though, was that they had done nothing special in saving Netanyahu.Kovner was on the far shore, serving as Levin’s radio operator. Clearly left-wing himself, he said that today the prime minister “sickens him.” He likened Netanyahu to the bramble in the Jotham’s parable in Judges – the least worthy of the trees, who rules over all others and burns them to the ground for showing insufficient trust. Never, he said, does he think of that night as the night the future prime minister was saved, but as the night Chaim Ben-Yona was lost.Salzberg said that saving Netanyahu’s life was “just part of my army service” and not anything “that I think about.”Danieli echoed that sentiment, saying that his actions were “normal” and that when the guys get together they talk about “Chaim and about the operation and not the little details.”Asaf, originally a kibbutznik from Degania Bet, described Netanyahu’s situation when he pulled him out of the water as having “one-and-a-half feet in the grave.” Several years ago, he said he received a phone call from Netanyahu. There had been some confusion as to who initially had saved his life. Asaf called Sara Netanyahu’s brother, Matanya, whom he knew, and asked to pass on to the Netanyahus that it was he who had found Netanyahu under the water.Soon enough, Asaf said, Netanyahu was on the other end of the line: “Your friends must be cursing you,” Netanyahu said, before thanking him and assuring him that he knew exactly who had pulled him to the surface.

OBAMAS THE REASON THERES NO MIDEAST PEACE PROCESS

Carter’s Wrong!, Obama’s the Reason There’s No Israeli/Palestinian Talks

posted at 8:02 am on October 23, 2012 by
[ Elections ]

Former U.S. President Jimmy Cartersaid yesterday  during a visit to Jerusalem that the prospect of an Israel-Palestinian peace accord is “vanishing. He blamed Israeli settlement of the West Bank.Carter, a longtime Israel opponent called the current situation “catastrophic” and blamed Israel for the growing isolation of east Jerusalem from the West Bank. He said a Palestinian state has become “unviable.”As he is with most things, the peanut President is 100% wrong.  While the ultimate responsibility for the lack of talks rests with Palestinian President Abbas, it was American President Barack Obama that handed him the excuse he needed to avoid negotiating with Israel. The Palestinian’s have never accepted Israeli settlements, stoppage of all settlement building has never been a precondition to talks. Israel had long ago agreed not to build new “settlements” in Judea and Samaria but would continue to add housing units to existing communities. They have never agreed to restrictions on building JerusalemDuring the government of PM Ehud Barak (during  the Bush Administration), there were direct talks and construction continued as outlined above. It was the Obama administration’s naivetĂ© that made the settlements an issue. Hillary Clinton first demanded the freeze in 2009 and was quickly backed up by Obama. What the President and his advisers perceived as a minor concession (a settlement freeze including no new housing units in existing communities) was for Israel a grave sacrifice. From their point of view he was telling parents that their children that they could no longer live near them. This was a major error by the Obama administration and it was compounded by their inclusion of Jerusalem in the mix and their constant public berating of the Jewish State. On top of all that was the revelation that his demand for a freeze of natural community growth broke a US/Israel agreement made during the Bush administration.Obama, through his Secretary of State Ms Clinton, said there was never an agreement between Israel and the US about natural expansion of existing settlements. Elliot Abrams who negotiated the agreement for the United States says that Obama’s contention were simply not true.
Immediately the Palestinians seized upon the Obama-created issue. Seeing an opportunity to avoid talking, they used Obama’s demands to make a settlement freeze a precondition to further talks, even there were negotiations and construction going on simultaneously before Obama became president. In August 2009 Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a ten month settlement freeze. It was approved and implemented on November 25, 2009 and ran till September 25, 2010. Despite pressure from the United States, the Palestinians wasted the first 9+ months of the freeze and would not come to the negotiation table till September 2010, three weeks before the freeze ended. A fact lost on the liberal media. While the onus was been put on the Jewish State to extend the freeze, not one media outlet has questioned the Palestinian Authority’s refusal talk for the first nine months of a ten month freeze. As the end of the construction halt approached, the US began to negotiate with the Israel to extend the freeze. Based on their experience with Obama and the deal negotiated by Elliot Abrams during the Bush Administration, Israel demanded that any proposal be presented in writing as any oral deal with the Obama administration was worth the paper it was printed on.The written offer never came and worse yet, the Secretary of State wasn’t negotiating in good faith. Instead Ms Clinton was playing “Bait and Switch.”
As Israel waits for a letter clarifying America’s guarantees in exchange for a proposed building ban for Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria, a diplomatic source has come forward saying that no such letter is on its way. United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton misled Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and contrary to reports, the U.S. does not guarantee an end to the freeze, the source said. The source, a senior diplomat with inside knowledge of Netanyahu’s recent meetings in Washington, said Clinton made commitments when talking to Netanyahu, but later slipped out of them by claiming that she had not been speaking on behalf of U.S. President Obama – who, she said in the end, did not give his approval.
When Netanyahu called the State Department to clarify America’s position, officials expressed surprise at his surprise, the source continued. While Clinton made promises, Netanyahu knew from the beginning that Obama has the final word, they allegedly said.
And still Israel tried to find a way out of this Obama created logjam and give the Palestinians a way “out.” In early October of 2010 he made a very simple offer to the PA. If you were to recognize Israel as the Jewish State, we will extend the freeze. As reported by Al Jazeera the answer was a resounding no:
Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has offered to renew a partial settlement construction freeze in exchange for Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.
He announced the offer on Monday, just three days after the Palestinians and Arab states gave the US a month to persuade Israel to renew a 10-month moratorium on settlement housing starts that expired on September 26.
Netanyahu’s proposal met with swift rejection from senior Palestinian officials.“The whole world holds Netanyahu responsible for what is happening in the region, after he chose to push ahead with the settlement project at the expense of an advance in the peace process. Settlement freeze is a commitment Netanyahu should respect,” Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, told Al Jazeera.Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior official of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, described the settlement issue as “an aggression on Palestinian rights and land”.“What Israel calls itself is an Israeli matter that does not concern us. The two issues are not related,” he told Al Jazeera in reference to Netanyahu’s condition that Palestinians recognise Israel as a Jewish state.Nabil Abu Rudainah, the spokesman for Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, said a return to peace talks required a freeze on settlement building by Israel.“The issue of the Jewishness of the state has nothing to do with the matter,” he told the Reuters news agency.
President Obama’s policy on the Israel/Palestinian issue failed because of his naivete and his blinders about the Palestinians. The fact that the Palestinian side refuses to make the most basic of acknowledgments, that Israel is the Jewish State. Until they recognize that fact, it is clear that the Palestinians have no desire to make peace.Add to that the fact that one of the provisions taken out of the 2012 Democratic Platform was that Palestinian “refugees” would be resettled in a future Palestinian State.  The removal of that provision was an acknowledgment that despite what he may say when looking for Jewish votes, this President does not acknowledge the fact that Israel is a Jewish State.  Because the removal of that platform item means the Democrat believes it OK for Israel to lose it Jewish character by flooding it with millions of so called refugees (there were 800K in 1948, now all of a sudden there are over 4 million). In the end the failure to bring about a two-state solution during the past  four years, which has been endorsed by every Israeli PM after Rabin (Rabin never agreed to a Palestinian State), is a failure created by President Obama and no one else.Jeff Dunetz is the Editor/Publisher of the Political Blog The Lid

2012 presidential campaign  »  Disturbing: CBS Affiliate Accidentally Runs Khyron Dated Nov 6 Declaring Obama Winner Of 2012 Election 43/40, With 40,237,966 Votes To 38,116,216 Votes

Oct 21, 2012 69 Comments Pat Dollard
Is the election totally rigged, with the fake numbers they are going to give already decided in advance? And did somebody at CBS screw up and accidentally run them Friday? Notice how the figure is perfectly believable, not too big a victory, but just big enough to call it decisive.

Excerpted from The Daily Caller: The 2012 presidential election is still more than two weeks away, but on Friday a CBS News affiliate in Arizona called the race for President Barack Obama.

For 17 seconds, Phoenix, Arizona CBS News affiliate KPHO ran a lower third graphic that showed that Obama had won the Nov. 6 election over Gov. Mitt Romney with 99% of the precincts reporting. The lower third graphic appeared around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, during an episode of “The People’s Court.”
The CBS News graphic showed Obama winning the election with 43 percent of the vote nationwide to Romney’s 40 percent -– or 40,237,966 votes to 38,116,216. It is unclear who garnered the other 17 percent in the fictional election results.

OCT 21,12 EARTHQUAKE DRILL IN ISRAEL TODAY

REVELATION 11:11-14
11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12 And they(ELIJSH-MOSES) heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither.(REV 4:1 WE KNOW IS THE RAPTURE FOR SURE) And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.(RAPTURED)
13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Israel is planning a huge emergency drill for next week amid speculation and fears that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will order a unilateral strike on Iranian uranium enrichment facilities. The drill tests the country’s ability to cope with an earthquake, and assumes hypothetical mass casualties of 7,000 dead, 70,000 wounded and 170,000 without a home. The drill will also include a scenario simulating a toxic chemical leak at the northern coastal port in Haifa. This is the first time a Home Front drill has dealt with a natural disaster scenario as opposed to a war scenario."The drill is designed to improve preparations for an earthquake, but will also prepare the public and ministries for other emergency scenarios," Home Front Commander Eyal Eisenberg said during a press conference. On Sunday, October 21, Israeli schools will carry out an earthquake drill during the day. At 7 P.M., television and radio channels will broadcast details for an additional phase of the drill, including protocol for earthquakes. The Home Front Command recently made changes to its earthquake instructions, calling on people to enter open areas rather than stay indoors in the event of an emergency. Buses will stop but passengers must stay inside of them. Beaches also must be emptied of people in the event of a tsunami.Another drill, dubbed Austere Challenge 12, in conjunction with the United States Army, is also scheduled to take place next week, according to one source.Meanwhile, Tehran is allegedly moving its nuclear facilities into subterranean bunkers deep beneath mountains, which puts them beyond the reach of conventional weapons. Israel also lives under the threat of Iranian proxy terrorist group Hizbullah, based in southern Lebanon. The aircraft that entered Israeli airspace last week and was shot down was operated by Hizbullah, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Thursday.Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries have been installed close to the northern city of Haifa since last week’s incident, according to Sky News.

IDF Drill Included Tsunami, Demolished School

The scenario simulated a strong earthquake in Eilat and a second quake in northern Israel, 2,600 casualties.
By Yoni Kempinski & Gil Ronen First Publish: 10/21/2012, 11:09 PM

The IDF rehearsed an emergency scenario in which an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale takes place in Eilat at 11:00 a.m. and a second, even stronger quake, subsequently hits northern Israel.
According to the scenario, MDA then receives reports of thousands of buildings collapsing throughout Israel, damage to hospitals, power outages and more.In addition, the drill included a tsunami wave, a school in ruins, a mass casualty situation on Nahariya's train station, a crash landing of a jet plane in Eilat, building collapses at Hebrew University and two prisons, a train wreck and more. The drill had MDA emergency crews treating 2,600 "casualties" throughout Israel, 1,800 of them in moderate to serious condition.
Prime Minister Netanyahu visited the drill accompanied by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Home Front Defense Minister Avi Dichter, IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz and GOC Home Front Maj.-Gen. Eyal Eizenberg. After being briefed by Maj.-Gen. Eisenberg and observing the exercise in an urban area, Netanyahu spoke to the press and soldiers who were on the scene

"The uniqueness of this exercise", explained Prime Minister Netanyahu, "is that in encompasses all government ministries, all of our rescue organizations, all of our systems, and the ability to organize – on a national level – a powerful national event in which we combine together all aspects of administration in Israel, including local governments. I congratulate the Mayor [of Holon]; you certainly know how to organize here a presentation that seems very realistic and I hope that it will not become such. Now, it must be understood that there is a basic difference between such an event and missile and rocket attacks on the home front. The main difference is that in the event of an earthquake, to the extent possible, we want people to exit the buildings and in a missile attack, we want people to go into buildings."

"This is a major difference", emphasized Netanyahu, "There is a great difference in the warning. In effect, there is practically no warning for an earthquake. There are warnings, and this is one of things we are doing on the home front, we give warnings in other cases, but here there is a network that is being built from exercise to exercise, we are investing major resources and considerable effort in it, as you see here. I think that this will help us. It is always said that the tougher the training, the easier the battle. It is not clear that this will be so easy in reality but we are preparing ourselves, and the State of Israel is preparing itself for these situations, I think better than any other country in the world."

Prime Minister Netanyahu stated one of the first conclusions which can already be noted during the drill - the danger of buildings built in the early stages of the State. "We will have to take the main form of preventive action and this involves major reconstruction programs in older neighborhoods in city centers. This is perhaps the main thing that we can do because we see that when there is new construction, the problem is much less serious and survival is much more significant. Therefore, there is something that we need to do between the exercises – rebuild our city centers with new construction."

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13

13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)(THIS IS AN ATOMIC BOMB EFFECT)

Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited the scene of the Turning Point 6 emergency drill Sunday and said that the scenario of a missile attack on central Israel is a "very practical" one. While the drill is supposedly meant to rehearse an earthquake situation, Barak was not trying to hide the fact that he was more concerned about a possible war scenario."Practicing is very important," Barak said. "It prepares the entire system for very difficult extreme situations, both mentally and operationally.Standing against the backdrop of mock casualties, he said: "Take this scenario, multiply it by several hundred and you get the picture.""This prepares us from the scenario of an earthquake, which is truly a very distant one, to the very practical scenarios that we experienced here a few years ago on a small scale, and that we could find ourselves in with missile attacks on central Israel," he explained. In that case, he said, "the same people, the same soldiers, the same emergency services," will be called up to deal with the situation. He praised the effort made by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in preparing the home front for a war situation, including the meetings Netanyahu holds ion a biweekly basis to assess progress in emergency preparedness.

Israel's Netanyahu: no limit on Jerusalem building

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's prime minister vowed on Sunday to continue building in east Jerusalem, despite objections from Palestinians who claim the territory as capital of their hoped-for state.Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Sunday after the European Union's foreign policy chief criticized plans to build 800 new apartments and a military college on contested land, which the international community considers to be under Israeli occupation."We are not imposing any restrictions on construction in Jerusalem" Netanyahu told his Cabinet. "It is our capital."A top aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promptly accused Netanyahu of deliberately destroying prospects for peace. The Israeli leader's comment "comes in the context of the continuing destruction of the peace process and the two-state solution," Nabil Abu Rdeneh said.
The fate of Jerusalem lies at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians refuse to negotiate while Israel continues to build settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank, areas captured by the Jewish state in 1967.Netanyahu has rejected the notion of partitioning the city.Meanwhile, American academic Noam Chomsky made his first ever visit to the Gaza Strip, where he called on Israel to end its blockade of the territory run by the Islamic militant group Hamas.Israel says it imposed the blockade to prevent Gaza militants from getting weapons. Gaza militants have fired thousands of rockets and mortar rounds at Israeli border communities and towns over the past decade.Hamas is listed as a terror group by the U.S., EU and others because of its suicide bombings and other attacks against civilian targets like buses and restaurants that have killed hundreds of people.Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh issued a statement Sunday evening saying he met with Chomsky in the afternoon. According to the statement, the Hamas leader thanked Chomsky for his support of the Palestinians. The octogenarian Chomsky, an ardent critic of Israel who was banned from the country in 2010, entered Gaza through neighboring Egypt to attend a linguistics conference. While there, he accused the U.S. of allowing the Jewish state to act with impunity for its continuation of the blockade, which Israel imposed after the militant Islamist Hamas group violently seized control of Gaza in 2007.
The restrictions on Gaza were loosened after an Israeli raid on a blockade-busting boat in 2009 killed nine Turkish activists, but there are still limits on movement, imports of raw materials, and exports.

Navy boards ship carrying pro-Palestinian activists to Gaza, escorts it to Ashdod

Israel says no force was used; activists claim the Estelle, whose stated purpose was to breach blockade of Hamas-run Strip, came ‘under attack’ by the IDF

October 20, 2012, 11:50 am 9 - THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
The Israeli Navy on Saturday surrounded a ship carrying pro-Palestinian activists intent on breaching Gaza’s blockade as it approached the coastal strip. IDF soldiers boarded the vessel and rerouted it to the port of Ashdod.Six Israeli boats surrounded the ship, the Estelle, and masked soldiers boarded it while it was still in international waters, some 38 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza, according to activists.Victoria Strand, a Stockholm-based spokeswoman for the campaign, told AFP the Estelle, a 174-foot (53-meter) schooner, came “under attack” shortly after the Israeli vessels approached it. Dror Feieler, an Israeli activist aboard the ship, was quoted by AFP as saying the ship was “attacked at 10:15 a.m.”The IDF issued a statement in which it said no force was used against the activists.“A short while ago, Israeli Navy soldiers boarded the Estelle… The boarding was carried out in accordance with international law, with directives of the Israeli government and after all attempts to prevent the vessel from reaching the Gaza Strip were made, both via direct contact and through diplomatic channels, but to no avail,” the IDF said.It added: “As a result of their [the activists'] unwillingness to cooperate and after ignoring calls to change course, the decision was made to board the vessel and lead it to the port of Ashdod.”The Navy “took every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the passengers. After boarding the vessel by IDF soldiers, who did not need to use force, the passengers were attended to and offered food and beverages,” the IDF said in the statement.
Upon arrival at the Ashdod port, the activists were to be transferred to the police and immigration authorities within the Ministry of Interior. The Estelle’s passengers and crew included activists and members of parliament from Greece, Sweden, the US, Canada, Norway and Israel. Since setting out from Sweden three months ago, the Estelle had docked at several Europeans ports, where passengers held media conferences to raise awareness of the situation in Gaza. It set sail for the Hamas-run enclave from Naples, Italy, earlier this month. The stated purpose of the voyage was to bring humanitarian aid to Gazans.“I want to say that we are here to give a message of solidarity to the people of Gaza,” said Reut Mor, an Israeli activist aboard the Estelle, before the ship was intercepted. “The siege is inhuman and immoral, and this is the reason — as non-violent peaceful activists — (we) decide(d) to risk ourselves and break the siege,” CNN reported.
Sailing under the Finnish flag, the Estelle was reportedly carrying two olive trees as well as 41 tons of cement, toys, medical equipment, and books.Israel has maintained an air and sea blockade of Gaza for the stated purpose of preventing weaponry reaching the Strip, from which rockets and mortar shells are frequently fired into Israel. Hamas, which is avowedly committed to the destruction of Israel, seized control of the Strip in a violent 2007 takeover from Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah-led Palestinian Authority.Under heavy international pressure, Israel eased the closure in 2010 after a naval raid killed nine Turkish activists on board a vessel in a previous Gaza-bound flotilla, the Mavi Marmara. Naval commandos seeking to commandeer the Marmara were attacked by violent activists as they boarded.Philip Podolsky contributed to this report.

Swedish flotilla ship heading for Gaza sails from Italy

(JTA) -- A Swedish ship carrying human rights activists attempting to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza left from Italy. The Estelle, carrying 17 activists from countries including Canada, Norway, Sweden, Israel  and the United States, sailed from the port at Naples on Saturday. The vessel, part of the Freedom Flotilla movement that included the ill-fated Mavi Marmara, reportedly is carrying humanitarian goods. It will take about two weeks to reach Gaza's territorial waters, according to the French news agency AFP.The Freedom Flotilla's first attempt to break the blockade ended in the deaths of nine Turkish activists afterIsraeli Navy commandos on May 31, 2010 boarded the Mavi Marmara, which claimed to be carrying humanitarian aid, after warning the ship not to sail into waters near the Gaza Strip in circumvention of Israel's naval blockade of the coastal strip.A spokeswoman for the movement, Ann Ighe, told AFP that the Estelle "is a peaceful ship."The Estelle began its journey in Sweden and toured Europe, including Finland, France and Spain, before arriving last week in the Gulf of Naples.

Liberman slams EU for calling its construction plans ‘illegal settlement’ activity

Foreign minister: ‘These automatic condemnations indicate a lack of a basic understanding of the reality in the region’

October 20, 2012, 2:31 pm - THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman on Saturday criticized the European Union, Britain, and France for their condemnation of a plan to construct hundreds of additional apartments in a Jerusalem neighborhood situated south of the 1967 Green Line. The Interior Ministry on Thursday approved a plan to expand the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo by 797 units. The plan was published for validation in an Israeli newspaper in what was the last phase of the planning process, AFP reported.“Gilo is an inseparable part of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem is an inseparable part of Israel,” Liberman (Yisrael Beytenu) said in a statement. ”These automatic condemnations indicate a lack of a basic understanding of the reality in the region.”“These condemnations contribute nothing to the advancement of dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians. They only encourage the Palestinian side to stick to its refusal to negotiate and continue its anti-Israeli activities in the international arena,” Lieberman stated.“The EU should focus on the problems that are surfacing between different nations on European soil. After these issues are successfully resolved, we will gladly hear any suggestions,” he said via the statement.Likud Ministers Gideon Sa’ar and Gilad Erdan also slammed the EU countries’ criticism of the housing plans.Sa’ar said the EU was fixated on the Gilo housing project “while the rest of the region is up in flames.” Erdan said the EU should finally realize “that Jerusalem is the basis for existence of the Jewish state of Israel.”Zahava Gal-on (Meretz), however, criticized Liberman for “going against the EU less than one week after the group [helped Israel] by increasing its sanctions against Iran.”
On Friday, the French Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the Interior Ministry’s decision, calling it “a provocation in an already-tense context.” Paris reiterated its stance that Israeli settlement construction is illegal, “undermines trust-building between the parties, and constitutes an obstacle to a just peace based on the two-state solution.”EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she “deeply regrets” the Israeli government’s decision, adding that Jerusalem’s continued expansion of Jewish settlements like Gilo and Har Homa “continue the process of separating East Jerusalem from the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory.”Ashton emphasized the EU’s stance that negotiations are “the best way forward in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict” and that settlement expansion hinders progress towards peace.British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt strongly condemned the plan, which he regarded as ”deeply worrying.” He added that London “has been clear that Israeli settlements are illegal and undermine the possibility of a two state solution.”

European Union wins Nobel Peace Prize

Committee chairman says EU helped to transform Europe from ‘a continent of war to a continent of peace’

OSLO, Norway (AP) — The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe, in the midst of the union’s biggest crisis since its creation in the 1950s.The Norwegian prize committee said the EU received the award for six decades of contributions “to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.“The stabilizing part played by the European Union has helped to transform a once torn Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace,” Nobel committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said. The EU rose from the ashes of World War II, born of the conviction that ever closer economic ties would make sure that century-old enemies never turned on each other again. The idea began to take on a more defined shape when, on May 9, 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed that France and the Federal Republic of Germany pool their coal and steel resources in a new organization that other European countries could join.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced that the Peace Prize for 2012 will go to the European Union.“The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe,” said chairman Thorbjorn Jagland.“Over a 70-year period, Germany and France had fought three wars. Today war between Germany and France is unthinkable,” Jagland said. “This shows how, through well-aimed efforts and by building up mutual confidence, historical enemies can become close partners.”The prize also is a reminder of what could be lost “if the union is allowed to collapse,” he noted. The EU is facing a crisis as some countries sink financially, causing economic problems for others in the union and creating tension over bailout terms.European Parliament President Martin Schultz said on Twitter that he is “deeply touched” and “honored” at the victory. “Reconciliation is what the E.U. is about,” he wrote. “It can serve as inspiration. The E.U. is a unique project that replaced war with peace, hate with solidarity.”Other candidates for the prize included Maggie Gobran, a Coptic Christian nun who works with children in the slums of Cairo, the Russian human rights group Memorial, and activist bloggers in the Arab world.Previous Nobel Peace Prize winners include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Mohamed ElBaradei of the UN’s IAEA nuclear watchdog agency and U.S. President Barack Obama, who was given the prize just one year into his term for having “created a new climate in international politics.”In 1994, the prize went to then-Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, Shimon Peres, and then-Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat for “their efforts to create peace in the Middle East.” The peace process later exploded as the PA launched a terrorist onslaught in which over 1,200 Israelis were killed and many thousands were wounded.

EU wins Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO (Reuters) - The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for promoting peace, democracy and human rights over six decades in an award seen as a morale boost as the bloc struggles to resolve its economic crisis. The award served as a reminder that the EU had largely brought peace to a continent which tore itself apart in two world wars in which tens of millions died. The EU has transformed most of Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace," Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said in announcing the award in Oslo."The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights," he said.Jaglund praised the EU for rebuilding Europe after World War Two and for its role in spreading stability after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.The debt crisis afflicting the single currency zone has brought economic instability to several member states, and rioting has erupted on the streets of Athens and Madrid as austerity measures have bitten hard. The prize, worth $1.2 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10. The decision by the five-member panel, led by Jagland who is also Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, was unanimous. The EU won from a field of 231 candidates including Russian dissidents and religious leaders working for Muslim-Christian reconciliation.Conceived in secret at a chateau near Brussels, what is now the European Union was created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome, signed with great fanfare in the Italian capital's 15th century Palazzo dei Conservatori.
FROM THE ATLANTIC TO RUSSIA
The six-state 'common market' it founded grew into a 27-nation European Union ranging from Ireland's Atlantic shores to the borders of Russia. At the time the Cold War was in full train after Soviet tanks put down an anti-communist rebellion in Budapest. Western countries led by the United States had formed the NATO military alliance and the Kremlin responded with the Warsaw Pact. But the EU is now mired in crisis with strains on the euro, the common currency shared by 17 nations.Politicians in Germany, one of the main forces behind the foundation of the EU, were delighted with the award.Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said: "This is an important and the right decision by the Nobel Prize Committee and a big encouragement for the people in Europe."Helmut Kohl, the chancellor who reunified Germany and pushed the country into the euro, said: "The Nobel Peace Prize for the EU is above all a confirmation of the European peace project,"The European Union's top official, Herman Van Rompuy, said he was proud the bloc's peace credentials had been rewarded."We have established peace thanks to the European Union. So the European Union is the biggest peacemaker in history," he said. After centuries of war on the continent the EU has been at peace within its borders, but its effort to stop war in former Yugoslavia -- hailed by one minister as "the hour of Europe" -- was a failure. The British government, less committed to the European ideal than other EU members, made no comment. Ed Balls, a senior member of the opposition Labour Party, remarked: "They'll be cheering in Athens tonight, won't they?"Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's fiercely eurosceptic UKIP party, added: "This goes to show that the Norwegians really do have a sense of humor."
"IS THIS A JOKE?"
In Athens, Greeks weary of years of austerity and crisis agreed."Is this a joke?" asked Chrisoula Panagiotidi, 36, a beautician who lost her job three days ago. "It's the last thing I would expect. It mocks us and what we are going through right now. All it will do is infuriate people here."In Madrid, Francisco Gonzalez expressed bafflement. "I don't see the logic in the EU getting this prize right now. They can't even agree among themselves," the 62-year-old businessman said.In Berlin, public relations worker Astrid Meinicke, 46, was also skeptical. "I find it curious. I think the EU could have engaged itself a bit better, especially in Syria," she said, near the city's historic Brandenburg Gate. Many Norwegians are bitterly opposed to the EU, seeing it as a threat to the sovereignty of nation states. "I find this absurd," the leader of Norway's anti-EU membership organization Heming Olaussen told NRK."In Latin America and other parts of the world they will view this quite differently than they will from Brussels. The union is a trade bloc that contributes to keeping many countries in poverty."Norway, the home of the peace prize, has voted "no" twice to joining the EU, in 1972 and 1994. The country has prospered outside the EU, partly thanks to huge oil and gas resources. The five-member committee is appointed by parliament, where parties are deeply split over EU membership. Jagland has long favored EU membership.Among those tipped to win was Russia's Ekho Moskvy radio, a frequent critic of the Kremlin. Its editor in chief Alexei Venediktov, conceded the prize to worthy winner.
"We are only 115 (Ekho Moskvy employees). They are 500 million (EU citizens). It is an honor (to lose to the EU)," He told Reuters.(Reporting by Alister Doyle, Terje Solsvik and Reuters European bureaux; Writing by Giles Elgood; editing by Philippa Fletcher)

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in principle to withdraw from the Golan Heights during indirect talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2010, according to US documents cited by Yedioth Ahronoth on Friday. The pertinent documents were written by Special Coordinator for the Middle East Frederick Hoff, an assistant to the then-US Special Envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell. The paper reported that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak opened secret negotiations with Assad that included a full withdrawal from the Golan to the shores of the Sea of Galilee in exchange for a peace deal. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.Netanyahu had Israeli officials who were involved in the negotiations sign confidentiality agreements, according to Yedioth, in order to guard the secrecy of the talks, of which the rest of the Israeli government was apparently unaware. The negotiations reportedly ended in early 2011, with the outbreak of the popular uprising against the Assad regime. The Prime Minister’s Office immediately denied the report on Friday, saying in a statement that Israel had never accepted the American initiative and that it was no longer relevant.Netanyahu announced on Thursday that Israeli elections would be held on January 22, 2013, nine months ahead of schedule.
