Palestinians win upgraded UN status by wide margin

President Mahmoud Abbas: "The international community now stands before the last chance to save the two state solution"
The UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians non-member observer state status - a move opposed by Israel and the US.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the assembly the vote was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel.Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said the bid "doesn't advance peace - it pushes it backwards".The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining.'Birth certificate'"Sixty-five years ago on this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 181, which partitioned the land of historic Palestine into two states and became the birth certificate for Israel," Mr Abbas told the assembly."The General Assembly is called upon today to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine," he said.Mr Prosor said "the only way to reach peace is through agreements" between the parties, not at the UN."No decision by the UN can break the 4,000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel," he said.Opponents of the bid say a Palestinian state should emerge only out of bilateral negotiations, as set out in the 1993 Oslo peace accords under which the Palestinian Authority was established.Speaking after the vote, the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, urged the Palestinians and Israel to resume direct peace talks and warned against unilateral actions.US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the vote "unfortunate and counter-productive", saying it put more obstacles on the path to peace.Symbolic milestone-The Palestinians are seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967.
France, Spain and Norway are among those urging the General Assembly to raise the Palestinians' UN status. Germany was set to abstain. While the move is seen as a symbolic milestone in Palestinian ambitions for statehood, the "Yes" vote will also have a practical diplomatic effect, says the BBC's Barbara Plett, at the UN.It would allow the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and bodies like the International Criminal Court.Last year, Mr Abbas asked the UN Security Council to admit the Palestinians as a member state, but that was opposed by the US.

The Meaning of Numbers: The Number 11
If ten marks the perfection of Divine order, then the number eleven is an addition to it, subversive of and undoing that order. If twelve is the number which marks the perfection of Divine government, then 11 falls short of it. So that whether we regard it as being 10 + 1, or 12 - 1, it is the number which marks, disorder, disorganization, imperfection, and disintegration.

THE NUMBER SEVEN IN THE HOLY BIBLE

The number SEVEN is one of the most significant numbers in the Holy Bible.
This is a chapter from the book, Biblical Mathematics, written by Evangelist, Ed F. Vallowe.

When man began to analyze and combine numbers, he developed other interesting symbols. He took the perfect world number FOUR and added to it the perfect divine number, THREE, and got SEVEN, the most sacred number to the Hebrews. It was earth crowned with heaven -- the four-square earth plus the divine COMPLETENESS OF GOD. So we have SEVEN expressing COMPLETENESS through union of earth with heaven. This number is used more than all other numbers in the Word of God, save the number ONE.

In the Book of Revelation the number SEVEN is used throughout. There are SEVEN churches, SEVEN Spirits, SEVEN stars, SEVEN seals, SEVEN trumpets, SEVEN vials, SEVEN personages, SEVEN dooms, and SEVEN new things. SEVEN symbolizes Spiritual Perfection. All of life revolves around this number. SEVEN is used over 700 times in the Bible. It is used 54 times in the Book of Revelation. The whole Word of God is founded upon the number SEVEN. It stands for the SEVENTH day of the Creation Week, and speaks of the Millennial Rest day. It denotes COMPLETENESS or PERFECTION.In Leviticus 23:15-16, the number SEVEN and the Sabbath, which was the SEVENTH day, is connected with the word COMPLETE. The word COMPLETE follows after the words “SEVEN SABBATH” (Seventh day). The day following the SEVENTH sabbath there was something NEW that took place.

The word FINISHED is also connected with the number SEVEN. In Revelation 10:7 we read,
“In the days of the voice of the SEVENTH angel, when he shall begin to sound the mystery of God should be FINISHED.”“It is DONE” is another expression found in connection with the number Seven.“And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne saying, It is DONE.” (Revelation 16:17)The word CREATED is used SEVEN times in connection with God’s creative work. (Genesis 1:1; Genesis 1:21; 1:27 (three times); 2:3; and 2:4). God created all things in the beginning and then took six days of restoring His creation and then rested on the SEVENTH day. (Genesis 2:1-3). He appointed SEVEN days for the week, and most, if not all advanced nations reckon time in that way: SEVEN days to the week. Few ever stop to think of why there are SEVEN days in a week. Do atheists and infidels give God and the Bible credit for it? There are SEVEN notes in the musical scale. All other pitches are only variations of these. When the musician uses the eighth note he goes back to “do” and starts over. Man named the notes but God fixed the sounds, even as God fixed the days of the week, and man named them.Noah took the clean beasts into the ark by SEVENS (Genesis 7:2) SEVEN days after Noah went into the ark the flood came. (Genesis 7:-10) Peter tells about the long-suffering of God waiting in the days of Noah. (I Peter 3:21) Those SEVEN days COMPLETED God’s time of waiting.

Before Aaron and his sons entered their priestly work they were consecrated SEVEN days. (Leviticus 8:31-36) Here is a picture of a life COMPLETELY or WHOLLY consecrated or dedicated to the Lord for service. On the day of atonement the high priest sprinkled the blood upon the mercy seat SEVEN times. (Leviticus 16:14) This is a picture of the COMPLETENESS of the redemptive work of Christ.“By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us." (Hebrews 9:12)When Christ offered Himself that FINISHED the sacrificial offerings. They were ended. No longer must we place sacrifices upon an altar.
When Israel took the city of Jericho God told them to march around the city SEVEN times. Thus, on the SEVENTH day, when they marched around the city SEVEN times, they COMPLETED their marching. (Joshua 6:1-16)There were SEVEN FEAST days of our Lord. (Passover, Unleavened, First-fruits, Pentecost, Atonement, Trumpets and Tabernacle). (Leviticus 23:1-44)
There were SEVEN branches on the CANDLESTICK in the Holy Place in the Tabernacle and this pictures the COMPLETE light of God for the souls of man.Solomon was SEVEN years in building the Temple and kept the Feast for SEVEN days. Job had SEVEN sons. When his friends came to visit him they sat SEVEN days and SEVEN nights in silence, and afterward they were required to offer a Burnt Offering of SEVEN bullocks and SEVEN rams. Naaaman washed SEVEN times in the Jordan. The Saviour spoke SEVEN words from the Cross. SEVEN men of honest report were chosen to administer the alms of the church in Acts 6:1-7. There were SEVEN years of plenty and SEVEN years of famine in Egypt during the days of Joseph.SEVEN times in the Book of Revelation blessing of the Lord are promised to His people. These are called the “BEATITUDES” of Revelation. These are found in Chapters 1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7, 14.There are SEVEN Dispensations -- Innocence, Conscience, Government, Patriarchal, Law, Grace, and Milleniah (sic) Age.SEVEN times the Book of Life is mentioned in the Bible. The Book of Revelation is a Book of SEVENS. We have SEVEN churches, SEVEN seals, SEVEN Trumpets, SEVEN Personages, SEVEN vails (sic), SEVEN dooms, SEVEN new things. SEVEN SEVENS make up this Book . It is the COMPLETENESS of all things.

Jesus said to “forgive SEVENTY times SEVEN“ In other words, He is saying, “Keep on forgiving until you are complete.” Even the duration of Israel’s great punishments was based upon this law of SEVENS. Their captivity in Babylon was for SEVENTY years, ten periods of SEVENS. (Jeremiah 25:11-12; Daniel l9:2)Life operates in a cycle of SEVENS. Changes take place in the body every SEVEN years. There are SEVEN bones in the neck, SEVEN bones in the face, SEVEN bones in the ankle, and SEVEN holes in the head. Most births are multiple of SEVENS. The hen sits three weeks (21 days); the pigeon two weeks (14 days); after having laid eggs for two weeks. Of 129 species of Mammalia (sic) the majority have a period from conception to birth of an exact number of weeks, a multiple of SEVEN.Human physiology is constructed on a law of SEVENS. Children are born to mothers in a certain number of weeks usually 280 days, a multiple of SEVENS. Fevers and intermittent attacks of gout, ague, and similar complaints have a period of operation of SEVEN, FOURTEEN or TWENTY-ONE days knows as critical days. All departments of nature are marked all over with mathematics. In this realm practically everything is in SEVENS. Notice next time the shape of frost when it crystallizes on the window. Notice the small snow flakes. It is wonderful how God formed everything in a pattern of SEVENS.It would be well for the reader to always remember the SEVEN means COMPLETENESS or SPIRITUAL PERFECTION. Whenever you come to a SEVEN in the Word of God read the meaning and the message is plain.SEVEN is found 735 times in the Bible. SEVENFOLD is mentioned 6 times and SEVENTH is found 119 times. The SEVENTH time Noah’s name occurs is where it is said,
“Noah was a just man, and PERFECT in his generations.” (Genesis 6:9)

In the second chapter of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream of a great image whose head was of gold, arms and breasts of silver, his belly and things of brass, legs of iron, and feet of iron and clay. (Daniel 2:31-33) Daniel told him that he was the head of gold (vs 37-38) In the next chapter Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold to be worshipped. At that time he called together SEVEN kinds of officials to the dedication of the image: (1) princes, (2) governors, (3) captains, (4) judges, (5) treasurers (6) counselors, (7) sheriffs. The penalty for refusing to worship that image was death by being cast into the burning fiery furnace. THREE Hebrew children refused to worship the image and were cast into that furnace of death, and brought forth alive, thus picturing the resurrection, signified by the number THREE That furnace was heated SEVEN times hotter than it had ever been. Here is a COMPLETE DELIVERANCE FOR GOD’S PEOPLE from the power of death. (Daniel 3:1-27) When those THREE Hebrew children came out of that furnace of fire, or death, there was not a trace of fire upon their bodies or their clothing. When Christ brings His people out of death there will not be a trace of death left on them. The will be COMPLETELY delivered from its power.

UN Votes Thursday on Palestinian Status

Margaret Besheer November 28, 2012 VOA

U.N. set to implicitly recognize Palestinian state, despite US, Israel threats

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. General Assembly is set to implicitly recognize a sovereign state of Palestine on Thursday despite threats by the United States and Israel to punish the Palestinian Authority by withholding much-needed funds for the West Bank government.A resolution that would change the Palestinian Authority's U.N. observer status from "entity" to "non-member state," like the Vatican, is expected to pass easily in the 193-nation General Assembly.Israel, the United States and a handful of other members are planning to vote against what they see as a largely symbolic and counterproductive move by the Palestinians, which takes place on the 65th anniversary of the assembly's adoption of resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been leading the campaign to win support for the resolution, and over a dozen European governments have offered him their support after an eight-day conflict this month between Israel and Islamists in the Gaza Strip, who are pledged to Israel's destruction and oppose his efforts toward a negotiated peace. The U.S. State Department said on Wednesday that Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns and U.S. Middle East peace envoy David Hale traveled to New York on Wednesday in a last-ditch effort to get Abbas to reconsider. The Palestinians gave no sign they were turning back.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton repeated to reporters in Washington on Wednesday the U.S. view that the Palestinian move was misguided and efforts should focus instead on reviving the stalled Middle East peace process."The path to a two-state solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Palestinian people is through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York," she said. "The only way to get a lasting solution is to commence direct negotiations."State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland reiterated U.S. warnings that the move could cause a reduction of U.S. economic support for the Palestinians. The Israelis have also warned they might take significant deductions out of monthly transfers of duties that Israel collects on the Palestinians' behalf.Despite its fierce opposition, Israel seems concerned not to find itself diplomatically isolated. It has recently toned down threats of retaliation in the face of wide international support for the initiative, notably among its European allies."The decision at the United Nations will change nothing on the ground," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in Jerusalem. "It will not advance the establishment of a Palestinian state. It will delay it further."
'SLAP IN THE FACE'
Granting Palestinians the title of "non-member observer state" falls short of full U.N. membership - something the Palestinians failed to achieve last year. But it would allow them access to the International Criminal Court and some other international bodies, should they choose to join them.Hanan Ashrawi, a top Palestinian Liberation Organization official, told a news conference in Ramallah that "the Palestinians can't be blackmailed all the time with money.""If Israel wants to destabilize the whole region, it can," she said. "We are talking to the Arab world about their support, if Israel responds with financial measures, and the EU has indicated they will not stop their support to us."Peace talks have been stalled for two years, mainly over the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which have expanded despite being deemed illegal by most of the world. In the draft resolution, the Palestinians have pledged to relaunch the peace process immediately following the U.N. vote.As there is little doubt about how the United States will vote when the Palestinian resolution to upgrade its U.N. status is put to a vote sometime after 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Thursday, the Palestinian Authority has been concentrating its efforts on lobbying wealthy European states, diplomats say.
With strong support from the developing world that makes up the majority of U.N. members, the resolution is virtually assured of securing more than the requisite simple majority. Palestinian officials hope for more than 130 yes votes.Abbas has been trying to amass as many European votes in favor as possible.Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland all pledged to support the Palestinian resolution. Britain said it was prepared to vote yes, but only if the Palestinians fulfilled certain conditions.Diplomats said the Czech Republic was expected to vote against the move, potentially dashing European hopes to avoid a three-way split in the vote. Germany and the Netherlands said they planned to abstain, like Estonia and Lithuania.Ashrawi said the positive responses from European states were encouraging and sent a message of hope to all Palestinians."This constitutes a historical turning point and opportunity for the world to rectify a grave historical injustice that the Palestinians have undergone since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948," she said.A strong backing from European nations could make it awkward for Israel to implement harsh retaliatory measures. But Israel's reaction might not be so measured if the Palestinians seek ICC action against Israel on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity or other crimes the court would have jurisdiction over.Israel also seems wary of weakening the Western-backed Abbas, especially after the political boost rival Hamas received from recent solidarity visits to Gaza by top officials from Egypt, Qatar and Tunisia.Hamas militants, who control Gaza and have had icy relations with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, unexpectedly offered Abbas their support this week. One Western diplomat said the Palestinian move was almost an insult to recently re-elected U.S. President Barack Obama."It's not the best way to convince Mr. Obama to have a more positive approach toward the peace process," said the diplomat, who was planning to vote for the resolution. "Three weeks after his election, it's basically a slap in the face."(Andrew Quinn in Washington, Noah Browning in Ramallah, Jeffrey Heller in Jerusalem, Michelle Nichols in New York, and Reuters bureaux in Europe and elsewhere; Editing by Peter Cooney and Xavier Briand)

'With UN Bid, Arabs Once Again Try to Steal Israel's Heritage'

November 29th is a day that belongs to Israel, says one historian - and the PA is trying to 'steal' it for themselves By David Lev First Publish: 11/29/2012, 1:56 PM-INN

Historical Reenactment of the 29th of November
Historical Reenactment of the 29th of November-Amir Lusky
It's no accident that the Palestinian Authority is bringing its “case” to the United Nations on November 29 – a day that has for 65 years been identified with the State of Israel.“It's very typical of the PA to choose the day that Israel was recognized as a state by the UN as the date for their state's recognition,” said one historian. “The PA has tried to co-opt so many Jewish and Israeli symbols in the past, and the co-opting of November 29 fits right in with that,” said Moshe Siebel, a history afficianado. The 29th of November is perhaps the only date on the secular calendar to be adopted into the Hebrew calendar, feted as “Kaf-Tet b'November..” Streets in many cities in Israel bear the name, and in the past it has been celebrated as a semi-holiday by Israelis as the day that the United Nations officially partitioned Palestine in 1947, and declared that a portion of the soon-to-be-defunct British Mandate for Palestine be reserved for a Jewish state. Now, in 2012, the PA is set to get UN General Assembly recognition for a state on land it already controls, but cannot have an army on at present. In a vote later Thursday, the UN is expected to recognize 'Palestine' as a non-voting, non-member observer state.UN Resolution 181 was the first official recognition of the national rights of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel in the modern age, going farther than the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which recognized Mandatory Palestine as a “national home” for the Jewish people.
Although the Partition Plan caused much dispute among Zionists, as it reserved only a small part of western Mandatory Palestine as the future Jewish state and did not include Jerusalem, which was to be internationalized, the Jewish community and its institutions embraced it. Thousands of people in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Petach Tikvah, and other centers of Jewish settlement celebrated in the streets. The Arab countries categorically rejected the Partition Plan, and vowed to crush the incipient Jewish state – a vow they tried to follow through on barely seven months later, in May 1948, after David Ben-Gurion declared the State of Israel. Armies from seven Arab countries immediately opened a war of annihilation against the Jewish community, but were miraculously beaten back, with the new State capturing important land areas that, had the Arabs agreed to the Partition Plan, would have been a part of an Arab state. For Jews around the world, November 29, 1947, was a very emotional day – in a sense, the rebirth of the Jewish people after the horrors of the Holocaust.Mandatory Palestine was already the home of hundreds of thousands of refugees who had managed to escape Europe, and hundreds of thousands more, still living in Europe and in refugee camps in Cyprus, were poised to immigrate to Israel as soon as Britain's Mandate had expired.
Cynically, says Siebel, the PA chose the same date in an attempt to once again co-opt Jewish history for its own purposes. “The historical injustice in this statehood bid is just unbelievable", he continued."If it weren't actually happening you just wouldn't be able to accept as reality,” he said. “The Jews were decimated in the Holocaust, with millions killed by the Nazis and their allies, and no one in the free world extended a hand. Meanwhile, the PA is plied with billions of dollars in assistance, and PA chief Mahmoud Abbas is feted as a hero in world capitals.“Israel itself supplies the PA with millions of dollars a year and provides PA Arabs with electricity, water, jobs, and encourages the world to assist Abbas, while the Arab reaction to the Partition Plan and the establishment of Israel was to throw the Jews out of Arab countries and seize their property and money."And the Jews never organized a terror campaign against Arabs during the Mandate period, unlike the Arabs, who then as well as now use terror as a tool to uproot the Jews from their rightful place here,” Siebel adds.“It's similar to the PA's declaration of the Temple Mount as a holy place in Islam that must be defended with life and limb from the 'evil Zionists,' even though the Temple Mount is never mentioned in the Koran,” Siebel said. “Neither is Jerusalem mentioned in their texts, and never in history did the Arabs give the city the status of a capital. But all of the sudden, because we are here, Jerusalem has become the 'eternal capital of the Palestinian people.'"The UN statehood bid is just another attempt by the Arabs to push us out of our land – and our history, for that matter – and the countries that support this are once again showing their anti-Semitism and hypocrisy.”

France to Vote For Palestinian Statehood, U.S. and Israel Not So Keen

The French government has announced that it will support a resolution that would recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations in a vote at the U.N. General Assembly this week. Palestine is currently an observer at the U.N. The resolution would recognize Palestine as a nonmember observer state. The U.K. has said it may support the resolution with some conditions. British officials want Palestinian authorities to stop pursuing Israel for war crimes and resume peace talks. As it stands the resolution is almost certainly going to pass despite objections from Israel and the U.S. When asked about the issue last week U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice said:Our goal remains a negotiated, two-state solution. A Jewish democratic state of Israel living side by side in peace and security with an independent, viable Palestinian state. The only way to accomplish that in the real world is through direct negotiations, and we continue to urge the parties to come back to the table and to resume those direct negotiations. We view unilateral steps, including the bid for upgraded status to statehood—observer state status at the General Assembly—to be counterproductive and not take us closer to that goal, and, therefore, we strongly oppose it. Israel and the U.S. could respond to the passing of the resolution in a few ways:The US and Israel have both hinted at possible retaliation if the vote goes ahead. Congress could block payments to the Palestinian Authority and Israel might freeze tax revenues it transfers under the 1993 Oslo agreement or, worse, withdraw from the agreement altogether. It could also annex West Bank settlements. Britain's position is that it wants to reduce the risk that such threats might be implemented and bolster Palestinian moderates.

Following European countries, Britain may support Palestinian status upgrade at UN

UK said seeking pledge from Abbas that he won’t attempt to have Israel prosecuted in international courts and will resume peace talks right away

The Palestinians’ bid for upgraded, non-member observer state status at the United Nations received major boosts Tuesday as, after France, Spain and Switzerland announced that they would support the move, Britain indicated that it might do likewise, subject to certain assurances from the Palestinian leadership.
On Wednesday, Norway and Denmark also said they would vote “yes” on the Palestinian proposal.  Australia said it will abstain.Although the motion appeared to be virtually assured of passage at the General Assembly in any case, Western powers had hesitated to offer their support while the United States and Israel opposed it.But Britain reportedly indicated it could back the Palestinian delegation in the UN vote on Thursday, on the condition that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas commit to not using the new status to pursue war crimes charges against Israel in the International Criminal Court or the International Court of Justice, and to resume peace talks with the Jewish state. Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague has reportedly been holding telephone talks with Abbas on the issue.PA official Tawfiq Tirawi had told Reuters that the Palestinians would take Israel to task for Yasser Arafat’s assassination at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.“We need proof in order to find those who are behind this assassination and take it to the ICC,” he said. “When we have proof, we will go to the ICC for it to be our first case to try those whose policy is assassinations,” he added.Later on Tuesday, though, Palestinian UN observer Riyad Mansour told a news conference at the United Nations that the Palestinians would not rush to sign up to the International Criminal Court. The British government has “signalled it would change tack and vote yes if the Palestinians modified their application,” The Guardian said Tuesday. “Whitehall officials said the Palestinians were now being asked to refrain from applying for membership of the international criminal court or the international court of justice, which could both be used to pursue war crimes charges or other legal claims against Israel. Abbas is also being asked to commit to an immediate resumption of peace talks ‘without preconditions’ with Israel. The third condition is that the general assembly’s resolution does not require the UN security council to follow suit.”The Guardian also said the PA has been telling the US and Europe that if it does not receive support for its UN bid, Hamas would be strengthened, and the assertion that violence rather than diplomacy pays, potent in the wake of Hamas’s claimed “victory” after the recent eight-day conflict with Israel, would be further vindicated among Palestinians. Some European diplomats have warned that “failure to support Abbas could risk further undermining his increasingly weak position, to Hamas’s advantage,” the Guardian said.It claimed the US and Britain “are attempting to weaken the impact of a UN vote” and quoted Palestinian officials saying Britain and the US have “pressed Abbas to sign a confidential side letter, which would not be presented to the UN general assembly, committing the Palestinian Authority not to accede to the ICC.”Earlier Tuesday, AP reported that France had become the first major European country to come out in favor of the Palestinian motion, with the timing of the announcement appeared to be aimed at swaying other European nations. Switzerland announced it would vote “yes” while Germany was expected to vote “no.”French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Parliament that France had long supported Palestinian ambitions for statehood and “will respond ‘Yes’” when the issue comes up for a vote “out of a concern for coherency.”By that point, Israel had already backtracked on its threat to dismantle the Oslo Accords in response to the bid.“We won’t cancel any of our agreements,” a senior official said. However, the official said, Jerusalem still considers Abbas’s unilateral step to seek nonmember state status at the UN a grave violation of agreements signed with Israel, and vowed that Israel would “respond accordingly.”Israel will quietly await Thursday’s vote before deciding on sanctions, the official said. If the Palestinians go ahead with the vote on Thursday, Israel will consider a series of punitive steps, such as seeking to call in Palestinian debts, he added, by way of example.

EU countries declare position on Palestine's UN bid

Today @ 09:37 NOV 28,12 By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - France has said it will vote Yes in a UN vote on making Palestine into an "observer state," but the UK will only back the move with strings attached.French foreign minister Laurent Fabius told parliament on Tuesday (27 November): "You know that for years and years France's consistent position has been the recognition of the Palestinian state ... That is why when the question is raised [in New York] on Thursday and Friday, France will respond with a 'Yes'."The French decision comes as no surprise.France, along with 10 other EU countries last year voted to admit Palestine to the UN's cultural heritage agency, Unesco.EU diplomats expect that most of the group-of-11 will take the same line on the UN "state" vote.Denmark on Tuesday restated its Unesco position by publicly joining France in the Yes camp. "It is an ambition that we support wholeheartedly," its foreign minister, Villy Sovdnal, told the Berlingske daily. But some countries have changed their mind.Belgium, which voted Yes on Unesco, plans to abstain on the statehood vote, its foreign ministry's spokesman told the Le Soir daily on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the UK, which abstained last year, has indicated it will vote Yes, but with conditions.Foreign minister William Hague told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas by phone late on Monday that he will back the UN bid if Palestine binds itself not to use its new status to file anti-Israeli cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.A positive UK vote would be a coup for the Palestinian side. But Palestine's EU ambassador, Leila Shahid, told EUobserver the ICC conditionality is not acceptable."We will not give up any rights which the status gives us. We are equal people to those others who have this status, including the right to go to the ICC," she said. She noted the vote will in any case go through because a majority of UN members already recognise Palestine on a bilateral basis. But she said European support would have important "symbolic" value due to the EU's financial and political clout in the region: "It will not change anything on the ground, but symbolically and in terms of the legal framework, in terms of the symbolic recognition of the capital and the borders and the right of the refugees, it is very important."For their part, the US and Israel say the move will harm the prospect of restarting peace talks."It's a British call how they want to take this forward. They know exactly where we stand," US state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday."It enflames the situation between the parties and makes it harder for them to come to the table, makes the political situation harder between them," she added. But Palestine believes UN status is the only way to protect its land in the face of decades-long Israeli settlement expansion."There isn't a third alternative - either you accept the fact that going to the UN is a non-violent and diplomatic way of building a Palestinian state, or you can't give moral lessons to the Palestinians and tell them to face [Israeli] F16s and F15s with their bare hands," Shahid said.

MORE DESTRUCTION FROM 8 HRS OF HURRICANE SANDY IN NY/NJ THAN ALL OF ISRAELS HISTORY SINCE 1948

THERE WAS 1,500 ROCKETS SHOT INTO ISRAEL DURING THE PILLAR OF DEFENCE WAR.AND ONLY 5 ISRAELIS DEAD COMPARED TO 150 HAMAS MEMBERS KILLED.THIS IS HOW GOD PROTECTS ISRAELIS IN ISRAEL.

DURING THE HURRICANE SANDY THAT HIT NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY.THERE WAS MORE DAMAGE IN 8 HOURS IN NY AND NJ ISRAELI PROPERTIES FROM HURRICANE SANDY THEN IN ALL THE WARS IN ISRAEL SINCE 1948 WHEN ISRAEL BECAME A NATION.THIS TELLS YOU HOW GOD PROTECTS ISRAELIS IN ISRAEL.THEIR GOD GIVIN LAND.

Who Was Hit Harder? RABBI LAZOR BRODY

In the recent round of hostilities, my beloved hometown of Ashdod was hit with 190 GRAD missiles from Gaza. despite the fact the the Iron Dome anti-missile system missed quite a few, only three people were slightly injured. And now, only four days since the ceasefire took hold, most of the damage has already been repaired. In contrast, when I was in Brooklyn ten days after Hurricane Sandy, much of the damage had not been dealt with. Power lines were still down, cars remained crushed under trees (see below), and there were still long lines to get gas. Many of the homes in the New York City and New Jersey Coast suffered irreparable damage. 8 hours of Hurricane Sandy were much worse than 8 days of missile fire from Gaza, with much less loss of life and property. Even after the recent round of hostilities, Rav Shalom Arush still says that the Land of Israel is the safest place on earth for a Jew.

There's a major common denominator between the recent Hurricane Sandy that did so much damage to the US East Coast and the recent round of Gaza hostilities. Today's emuna lesson takes a close look at Hashem's (GODS) message...

THE WORLD SHOULD BE THANKING ISRAEL

Kislev 4, 5773, 11/18/2012

Missiles, Cruelty and the Mess in Gaza

by Tamar Yonah

My Friends,
The world should not be condemning Israel for going into Gaza, they should be THANKING us.
I have just returned from 2 days in the south of Israel, being with my people who are living under impossible conditions. Just in the last 48 hours, I experienced the 'racing into bomb shelters' when air raid sirens went off. ...Several times.
Being cooped up and pressed against people whose names I do not know, but who are my brothers and sisters, waiting in these bomb shelters, or taking refuge behind walls because there was no nearby shelter when the missiles came heading for us, we would together hear the BOOMS and THUDS, and then feel the ground shake beneath our feet.
After a stressful day, arriving at where we'd be sleeping for the night, we were awakened to yet another siren a little after 12:30am.  Shaking my husband awake and in the dark going quickly to the 'safe room' that all new apartments and homes have in Israel (by law), we waited until we heard the BOOMS and thuds.  After it was over, I went to the balcony to see if I could see anything in the dark.  Nothing, but I could smell what seemed like gunfire powder from the explosion of the missiles by the Iron Dome anti-Missile system which must have exloded somewhere above our building.  After a siren wakes you, it is hard to go back to sleep, and thus a night's sleep is robbed, and yet you have to function and be on your toes the next day.  And then the next morning brought several more alarms, booms, and thuds.  Once, I didn't make it in time to the shelter, and I saw in the sky, as the siren was blaring,, an Iron Dome anti-missile shooting through the air.  I was looking for the incoming missile, and then a flash of light and a BOOM and then I saw a burned grey shape in the sky where the terrorist's grad missile exploded.  It was (in a negative way) AWESOME, wow, wow, wow.  I then went for cover as more missiles were likely to come. Though one can train themselves to remain calm, the body is under intense stress that builds up with every alarm and missile income.  Friday morning, my husband and I had to pack up and leave the south, we did not want to go, but we needed to be back home in the Jerusalem area (YESHA) to be with our children and wider family for the Sabbath.   That night, back in the Jerusalem area, we ourselves had a siren of an incoming missile some where. -Only here, we don't have a 'safe room/bomb shelter' as our homes are older.  We went to the safest room in the house with the least amount of windows and the most insulated.  No peace it seemed.
Re-wind-back 24 + hours:
My son, who is in the IDF paratroopers, and just 21 years old, called me because he knew he was being sent into Gaza.  He called at about 11:45pm and asked my husband if I was awake, and to please put me on the phone with him.  "Eema," which means 'mother' in Hebrew), "This is it." he said.
IN OTHER WORDS he was telling me that they received orders to go into Gaza. I got a lump in my throat.  He continued talking to me over the phone, "Eema, if I have hurt you in any way, please forgive me.  I love you Eema.  And tell all my siblings (he named them all)  if I don't get to speak with them again, that I love them. And tell grandma and grandpa also, ok?"  I realized, in slow motion, that this was his 'goodbye phone call' to me, to his father, and to the family.  I didn't expect it. It was too soon. I mean, I always knew he may be one of the ones sent into the terrorist's nest to do the job that has to be done to protect the innocent, but it was never 'for sure'.
What could a mother do?  I tried to speak, but I broke down as the reality of the meaning of this call hit me.  "I love you sweetheart" I choked out, "I will always love you! Take care of yourself! Be safe, I am praying for you!"  and I started to cry,  two gulps came out and then I quickly regained my composure and got the words out, "I will give your siblings your message, yes, I will tell them for you. Stay strong!"
I am one of thousands of mothers whose child is now ready to go into Gaza, and may have gotten a call similar to this. Our boys are now being sent in to fight and uproot the terrorists who want to kill us here in Israel, and when finished (G-d forbid with us), these terrorists would turn their eyes to you in the West to kill you too.   You see, we here in Israel are the 'Little Satan', and you in America are the 'Big Satan'.  We, the Jews are the Saturday People, and you in the West are the 'Sunday People', and they want to kill us all.  We (the West and Israel) did not want this war.  This war has been thrust upon us.  While Israel is being rained on with missiles from these criminal Islamic terrorists, we are the ones who have the job of cleaning up and hopefully removing these cruel ones from the face of this earth so innocent men, women, and children can live in peace and safety.
The world should not be condemning Israel for going into Gaza, they should be THANKING us.
Please pray for our sons and daughters who have to go into Gaza.  Please recite these Psalms,  130, 121, 83, 20, 91,   and please pray for the nation of Israel under fire, and that G-d blesses our soldiers and keeps them safe, and that He gives wisdom and courage to our leadership to do the right thing and ensure peace and security to not only us here in Israel, but also to all peaceful and freedom loving people around the world.
My son, and all our soldiers could use your prayers.

New euro notes to show tragic princess

Today @ 09:58 NOV 9,12 By Nikolaj Nielsen
BRUSSELS - In Greek mythology, the Phoenician princess Europa was abducted and raped by the king of the gods, Zeus. But her image will from next year replace pictures of windows and doors on euro banknotes as a security and deocrative feature."Portraits have long been used in banknotes around the world and research has shown that people tend to remember faces. Is there any better figure than Europa to serve as the new face of the euro?" the chief of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, said on Thursday (8 November) according to Bloomberg. She will first appear on the €5 bank note in May, with other notes introduced in ascending order in the next few years.Europa's face will appear as a watermark and as a hologram. Until now, euro notes carry pictures of windows and doors in various architectural styles in a bid to symbolise openness without offedning any national sensibilities. The new notes will also carry an emerald-coloured number. The first series of banknotes will circulate alongside the old ones. But he old notes, first introduced 10 years ago, will eventually cease to be legal tender."The date when this occurs will be announced well in advance," the ECB said. The old notes will retain their face value and will be exchangeable at any national central bank in the eurozone even when they are no longer valid as tender in shops.Meanwhile, counterfeiting euro notes has kept international law enforcement authorities busy.
In April, an international police sting in Bogota, Colombia dismantled a counterfeit print shop and depot manufacturing €50 and €100 bills.Europol, the EU’s police agency based in the Hague, said authorities seized over €19 million in counterfeit money in Columbia alone since 2006.

ECB Announces New Euro Banknotes Using Greek Myth for Security

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi announced a new series of euro banknotes that use an image from Greek mythology to improve security. The banknotes featuring Europa, the Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus who gave the continent its name, will be introduced gradually over several years, starting with a five- euro ($6.37) bill in May 2013, Draghi said in Frankfurt today. Europa will appear in the watermark and hologram on the notes.Central banks typically redesign their banknotes on a regular basis to improve security and prevent counterfeiting. Europa will replace architectural images in the watermark. Using a face rather than a structure may make it harder for forgers to produce fakes.“Portraits have long been used in banknotes around the world and research has shown that people tend to remember faces,” Draghi said. “Is there any better figure than Europa to serve as the new face of the euro?”The first series of banknotes, launched 10 years ago, will initially circulate alongside the second series before being gradually withdrawn and eventually ceasing to be legal tender, the ECB said. “The date when this occurs will be announced well in advance,” it said.Still, the old banknotes will retain their value indefinitely and can be exchanged at the Eurosystem’s national central banks at any time.To contact the reporters on this story: Gabi Thesing in London at gthesing@bloomberg.net; Jana Randow in Frankfurt at jrandow@bloomberg.net

PA Unveils UN Membership Resolution

Envoys from the Palestinian Authority on Thursday unveiled the resolution they hope will give them observer membership at the United Nations but held back from setting a date for a vote, AFP reported.Arab League foreign ministers are to discuss the resolution next week, diplomats told AFP.The PA’s mission to the United Nations sent a letter to UN members with its proposed resolution, saying it would be put to the 193 member UN General Assembly "at a date to be announced in the near future."The resolution would call on the assembly to accord observe membership and urge the 15-nation UN Security Council to "consider favorably" an application for full membership made last year by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. The United States has blocked the full membership bid, threatening to use a veto at the Security Council, which must approve any full application. It cannot hold up any bid for observer membership at the General Assembly.
The PA’s application is certain to be passed at the General Assembly but the question would be how big a majority it would get if the United States opposes the resolution.Arab League foreign ministers are to meet on November 12-13 and could set a date for a vote if Abbas agrees, UN diplomats said, according to AFP.
The draft resolution "reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination" on the basis of Israeli-Arab borders before the 1967 Six Day War.The resolution highlights "the urgent need for the resumption and acceleration of negotiations" between the two sides to settle the questions of refugees, Jerusalem, settlements, borders, security, water and prisoners.Abbas formally announced in September that the PA would ask the General Assembly to grant it "super-observer" status that could give it access to UN institutions and agencies.Kol Yisrael radio reported on Thursday night that the PA will likely table the resolution on November 29.Channel 10 News reported earlier this week that Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has threatened that if the PA goes ahead with its unilateral statehood bid he “will work to ensure the PA will collapse.”Lieberman reportedly stressed that a unilateral statehood bid by the PA will "put an end to the chances to resume peace negotiations."Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he remains ready to sit down for final status talks with the PA leader."Only in direct negotiations will it be possible to clarify what the true positions are. Generally, I can say that if Abu Mazen is really serious and intends to advance peace, as far as I am concerned, we can sit together immediately. Jerusalem and Ramallah are only seven minutes apart; I am ready to start negotiations today,” Netanyahu said bluntly.
"I will take this opportunity to again call on President Abbas to return to the negotiating table without preconditions, because peace may be advanced only around the negotiating table and not via unilateral decisions in the United Nations General Assembly, which will only push peace further away and will only lead to instability.”The Obama administration has indicated that it opposes the PA’s unilateral move and said it would “make the case” at the UN for Israeli- PA talks when Abbas submits his bid.

Finance minister threatens to withhold tax revenues if Palestinians make UN statehood bid

Yuval Steinitz points at success of freezing assets in preventing similar measure last year

November 10, 2012, 4:51 pm 0-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel will withhold transferring tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority if President Mahmoud Abbas presses forward with a United Nations statehood bid, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz warned on Saturday.
Stenitz said that Israel would not collect taxes on the Palestinians’ behalf, nor deliver the moneys to the PA, nor assist Ramallah in economic matters if the Palestinians insist on seeking nonmember observer state status at the UN.Under the current economic agreements between Israel and the PA, Israel collects customs, border and some income taxes on behalf of the Palestinians and transfers the sums to Ramallah on a monthly basis. The finance minister noted that the Palestinians backed down from a unilateral UN bid last year after Israel blocked the transfer of Palestinian tax funds to the PA.Abbas was expected to submit a resolution to the UN General Assembly this month requesting nonmember state status for the Palestinians, but a senior Palestinian official indicated Friday that Abbas may be willing to postpone the move if the US were to offer a “clear objective” for negotiations. According to the official, the objective would have to be a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Palestinian sources indicated Saturday that Abbas was “seriously considering” pushing back a UN bid, and that the stated reason for a possible postponement – from November to the end of January – is that reelected US President Barack Obama needs time to organize a political agenda for the second term of his administration.

President Shimon Peres denied on Friday recent media reports that he is planning to end his term early and run in the next Knesset elections as head of Israel’s center-left bloc. This week it was reported that former Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni has been pressuring Shimon Peres to head a center-left Knesset list in the coming election. She reportedly told the 89-year-old president that she would support him if he chooses to run as his number two.Peres has also been under pressure by other politicians to run. It has been suggested in previous weeks that Peres might be the only candidate who can unite the fragmented center-left bloc and beat Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the January elections. However, on Friday morning as he was making his way en route from Moscow back to Israel, Peres denied the reports about his political intentions and said he intends to complete his term as president in one year and 10 months.President Peres rejected any idea of returning to the Knesset and said, “All the reports are pure speculation.”On Thursday, opposition head MK Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) hinted at an impending center-left political union to match the Likud-Yisrael Beytenu merger on the political right. Mofaz told an interviewer at Gordon College in Haifa to expect political change.“Things will happen in the next two and a half months,” he said. “These are things that aren’t ready yet.”“The map is going to change,” he added. “It will happen very quickly, close to the time of elections.”Mofaz was asked if he has considered the possibility that if a left-wing political merger occurs, he may not stand at the head of the new party. Polls show that Kadima, the largest party in the current Knesset, may not make it into the next Knesset.“I take everything into account,” Mofaz replied.(Arutz Sheva’s North American Desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. Twelve EU countries likely to back Palestine's UN bid

Today @ 09:27 NOV 9,12 By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - Palestine can count on about 12 Yes votes by EU countries when it seeks to upgrade its UN status, in a move expected later this month.EU foreign affairs spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told EUobserver on Thursday (8 November) that foreign ministers will debate the subject at a regular meeting in Brussels on 19 November. She added that: "The EU maintains that negotiations remain the best way forward to resolve the Middle East peace process."A senior EU diplomat told this website the same day the EU remains divided on the question, however. He noted that member states' votes "will probably follow the same pattern as with Unesco," referring to a decision by the UN's Paris-based cultural wing to admit Palestine as a member last year.At the time, 11 countries - Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Slovenia and Spain - backed the Unesco bid.Another 11 - Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Romania and the UK - abstained. The other five - the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden - voted No.Some of the positions might have shifted over the past 12 months.Cyprus and Israel have in the meantime developed closer ties over a joint project to explore natural gas reserves in the Mediterranean Sea.But Israel lost an ally in Brussels when Dutch foreign minister Uri Rosenthal left his post in a new coalition government this week.Rosenthal's successor, centre-left politician Frans Timmermans, has in the past criticised the Dutch government's pro-Israeli stance. Last September, he tabled a motion in the Dutch parliament saying The Hague should back Palestine's bid to get a Vatican-type observer status in the UN.The Palestinian side on Thursday circulated a draft UN resolution seeking "Observer State status ... on the basis of the pre-1967 borders."
The draft text echoes the EU's common position on the conflict by also calling for "the resumption and acceleration of negotiations" and "two states, an independent, sovereign, democratic, contiguous and viable state of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security with Israel."It needs a simple majority in the UN to pass, with a vote expected on 15 November or on 29 November.Palestine's chief negotiator on the conflict, Saeb Erakat, in October described the move as "a sword on [the] neck" of Israel, because if it goes through, Palestine will have the right to file cases against Israel at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
For his part, Israel's foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman will on Friday in Vienna meet with Israel's ambassadors to European countries to co-ordinate a blocking campaign. He gave a flavour of what Israeli diplomats will be telling EU capitals in coming days at a recent meeting with EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton in Israel."He threatened to withhold Palestine's tax revenues, to cut off their electricity and water supplies and to flood the occupied territories with new settlements if they go ahead with the UN vote," an EU source told this website. In an another foretaste of things to come, Israel this week unveiled the construction of almost 1,300 new settler homes on occupied land. The US is also lobbying EU countries not to back the UN bid.The state department sent a confidential memo to member states' UN ambassadors in September saying that the observer status bid "would have significant negative consequences, for the peace process itself, for the UN system, as well for our ability to maintain significant financial support for the Palestinian Authority."It noted: "We believe your government understands what is at stake here, and - like us - wants to avoid a collision."It added that EU governments should tell other UN members and their Palestinian contacts that its UN bid "would be extremely counter-productive.

Senior Palestinian official claims Abbas may postpone UN move, report says

If US offers ‘clear objective’ for negotiations, Ramallah said willing to reconsider a unilateral push for nonmember state status

November 9, 2012, 8:53 am 3-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A senior Palestinian official said Friday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas may be willing to postpone a move for upgraded UN status if the US were to offer a “clear objective” for negotiations, Israel Radio reported.According to the official, the objective must be a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Other Palestinian sources also indicated that Ramallah would be willing to reconsider a unilateral push for nonmember state status, tentatively scheduled for late November, if real suggestions were offered for ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, according to the report. The Palestinians took the first step toward raising their status at the UN from an observer to a nonmember state Thursday by circulating a draft resolution to the 193 UN member states and asking for their support.A letter from the observer mission accompanying the draft resolution asks UN members to support “the enhancement of the status of Palestine in the United Nations General Assembly to be considered by the assembly at a date to be announced in the near future.” The draft also calls on the UN Security Council to approve a Palestinian petition for full UN membership, which was submitted last year.
There are no vetoes in the General Assembly and the resolution is almost certain to be approved by the world body, which is dominated by countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Approval of the resolution would elevate the Palestinians to the same status as the Vatican. The draft resolution states that, to date, 132 nations have recognized “the State of Palestine.”Israel and the United States are on record opposing the move, saying the Palestinians should first negotiate their statehood with the Jewish state, not take unilateral action and sidestep talks. The upgraded status would add weight to Palestinian claims for a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005.The Palestinians also hope to use their upgraded status to join additional UN bodies, such as the International Criminal Court, where they could attempt to prosecute Israel. At the same time, they have expressed fear of financial and diplomatic retaliation.Following last year’s move by the Palestinians to join the UN cultural agency UNESCO, the United States withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The US also withheld money to the Palestinians, and the US Congress has threatened similar sanctions if the Palestinians proceed to improve their status at the UN again.
Israel also retaliated by accelerating settlement construction and withholding funds from the Palestinian government.

Yair Lapid: The PA Will Give Up Jerusalem

Yair Lapid argues that if Israel does not compromise on “right of return,” Jerusalem, the PA will give in.

Modern Jerusalem
Modern Jerusalem-Flash 90
If Israel does not compromise on the unity of Jerusalem, or on the so-called “right of return,” the Palestinian Authority will give up on both, political newcomer Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid party, argued this week in a lecture at the Council for Peace and Security.A source present at the event told Haaretz that Lapid was asked, “Do you want 300,000 Palestinians living in the Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem to become Israelis?” Lapid replied, “There are Arabs living in the state of Israel and we need to learn to live with them.”He then expressed confidence that Israel can reach a diplomatic agreement with the PA without dividing Jerusalem or giving up sovereignty in Arab neighborhoods of the city. The PA demands all neighborhoods of the capital that lie east of the 1949 armistice line as the capital city of a new Arab state.“Why did Abu Mazen [PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas – ed.] suddenly say he was giving up the ‘right of return?’” Lapid asked. “Abu Mazen gave up on the right of return because the Palestinians recognized that there was complete consensus among the Israeli public on this matter, so they moved on to the next matter.”Similarly, he continued, “There is no compromise on Jerusalem. If the Palestinians understand that without giving in on Jerusalem they will not get a state, they will step down from this demand, too.”After telling Israeli media that he does not demand the right to live in the Israeli city of Tzfat, Abbas told Arab-language media that “the right of return is holy” and insisted that his remarks to Israel’s Channel 2 news had been taken out of context. His spokesman confirmed that the PA chairman has not given up the demand that millions of foreign Arab descendants of Arabs who fled pre-state Israel be allowed to immigrate to Israel.

The World be Damned

November 9, 2012, 3:05 pm 3 By Emanuel Shahaf _THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Present policies as pursued by the government of Israel are leading the country into a dead end situation where Israel will have to deal all on her own with a considerable range of problems in the Middle East.        A systematic effort to disengage from any serious peacemaking efforts vis-a-vis the Palestinians has left relations with the European Union, with minor exceptions, in shambles. Netanyahu is not exactly on speaking terms with German Chancellor Merkel and in one measly meeting has already managed to sour the relationship with the President of France Francois Hollande who has barely had time to take office. This after thoroughly ruining the relationship with Hollande’s predecessor, Sarkozy. The relationship with the British appears to be somewhat better, mostly since Netanyahu and Cameron haven’t met that often. Nevertheless, the two are not on the same page regarding Iran nor are they in agreement regarding Israel’s studied ignorance of the peace process. Needless to say, the relations with a newly elected US President Obama are, let’s be generous, on the iffy side and he is unlikely to make a push for peace in the Middle East involving an uncooperative Netanyahu, before having resolved some more pressing problems at home.
All this happens at a time where Israel needs all the help it can get not only to prevent Iran from going nuclear but also to deal with ever increasing regional instability caused by an Arab Spring trying to find its way. Egypt it looking how to solidify the democratic principles necessary to continue receiving US aid without giving up on Islamic ideals. Syria is at war with itself and there is no prognosis at this time. Jordan is boiling on a low flame and its long term stability is in question. Lebanon, once again, is at a junction from where the road downhill appears to be a likely option. The relationship with the only strategic ally in the area, Turkey, has been unceremoniously written off and the Foreign Ministry is now busy warming up relations with Greece and Bulgaria. While the Arab world around us is in turmoil Israel does absolutely nothing that could lower the flames like winding down the closure of the Gaza strip even further or starting serious negotiations with Abu Mazen. We are hunkering down in our bunker (“the villa in the jungle”), equipping ourselves with ever more sophisticated and expensive weapons systems and hope that eventually this will all blow over. At the same time Israel is maintaining de-facto control over 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank and has a major hold over the well-being of another 1.5 Million in the Gaza Strip. Despite Abu Mazen’s promise not to engage in another Intifada, he can hardly be held responsible should one break out nevertheless when nothing of consequence is done by Israel to prevent that from happening.Netanyahu’s policies are  highly illogical and dangerous. If, as he claims, the Iranian threat is all pervasive and another Holocaust is possible, why not do what is necessary to improve Israel’s relations with the West by compromising with the Palestinians ? A Prime Minister who does not know what to chose at such a critical time must be removed from office before he can do any more harm. On January 22nd the public will have the opportunity to do just that.
