pigs’ heads were sent to the Israeli embassy in Rome and the city’s
synagogue, Italian media reported Saturday.The
package mailed to the embassy in the wealthy Parioli area of the
Italian capital was intercepted by police after other similar parcels
were sent to the synagogue and the Jewish Museum of Rome, which is
hosting an exhibit on the Holocaust.The threats came days ahead of the
International Commemoration Day in memory of the victims of the
Holocaust on Monday, January 27.
“Those who insult the Jewish community offend
Rome. We reject the intimidation outright,” Rome mayor Ignazio Marino
said in a tweet.The synagogue’s package was delivered Friday
just as staff received an anonymous phone call claiming there was a
parcel bomb on site, the reports said.

Bomb disposal experts who rushed to the scene discovered the grisly head, which they believe came from a slaughterhouse.Police are analysing fingerprints and DNA

Rome neighborhood. One graffito read “the Holocaust is a lie” and the
second showed a swastika with the words “Hanna [sic] Frank is a big
liar,” Corriere Della Sera reported.Local politician Yuri Bugli condemned
the vandalism in his district, calling the perpetrators “cowards” and
“unrivaled idiots.” He called for “firm condemnation” of the act, while
“remembering each day the horrors caused by Nazi racial hatred.”

Minister Danny Danon, and Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin — slammed comments made Sunday to the Times of Israel by an official in the Prime Minister’s Office,
who indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing to
allow Israeli settlers the choice to remain in situ under Palestinian
sovereignty as part of a future peace plan.The
official told The Times of Israel on Sunday that Netanyahu has no
intention of forcibly uprooting any settlers even under a permanent
accord, but rather wants them to have the choice of remaining in
“Palestine” as a Jewish minority or voluntarily relocating to areas
under Israel sovereignty. The official was elaborating on Netanyahu’s
declaration in Davos on Friday that, “I do not intend to remove a single
settlement, [and] I do not intend to displace a single Israeli.”In response, right-wing Jewish Home party
leader Bennett issued a call on Sunday night to Netanyahu to abandon the
idea of settlers living under Palestinian rule, and said the prime
minister’s position “reflects an irrationality of values.”“Never,” Bennett posted on his Facebook page.
“We did not return to the land of Israel after two thousand years of
longing to live under the government of Mahmoud Abbas. Whoever advocates
for the idea of Jewish life in Israel under Palestinian rule is
undermining our ability to sit in Tel Aviv.”

Likud MK Danon also castigated the notion, and
said he “would not wish upon my enemies to live under Palestinian
rule.” Those who think Jews can live under Palestinian sovereignty are
invited to visit Gaza, Danon said. ”Where there is no military presence
and responsibility, there will be no security for any Jew,” he added.Elkin also sharply criticized the plan, and
accused the unnamed official in the PMO of attempting to create a rift
between Netanyahu and his fellow Likud members.A statement released by the Yesha Council on
Sunday night lambasted the plan, indicating that settlers themselves are
opposed to it.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
has previously rejected the idea of settlers remaining in a future
Palestinian state, insisting there can be no Israeli civilian or
military presence, and on Sunday night Palestinian official Saeb Erekat
reiterated that position.“Anyone who says he wants to keep the settlers
in a Palestinian state is really saying he does not want a Palestinian
state,” Erekat said. “No settler will be permitted to stay in a
Palestinian state, not one, because the settlements are illegal and the
presence of settlers on occupied lands is illegal.”
The idea of letting settlers choose whether
they want to return to Israel proper or remain in a future Palestinian
was first suggested in 2006 by then-prime minister Ehud Olmert. “Each
and every one of the settlers who live in territories that stand to be
evacuated will need to decide whether to live in a Jewish state, the
State of Israel, or in a Palestinian state,” Olmert said, in response to
a question about whether he intended to uproot tens of thousands of

the 2005 disengagement from Gaza, under which prime minister Ariel

Finance Minister Yair Lapid and
Economics Minister Naftali Bennett may be ministerial colleagues, but
their growing mutual dislike is becoming increasingly overt.At
an event in the central Israeli town of Petah Tikva Thursday, Bennett,
who heads the Orthodox-nationalist Jewish Home party, critiqued the
internal workings of the centrist Yesh Atid, and particularly its
chairman Lapid.“Jewish Home is a diverse party comprising
many attitudes — and not a dictatorship like Yesh Atid or [Avigdor
Liberman's] Yisrael Beytenu,” he said in a recording of the event,
leaked Sunday to Army Radio. “It is no secret that these parties lack
primary elections… Lapid is a dictator.”Under the terms of the Yesh Atid party, there
are no primary elections to establish its Knesset list; elections to
determine the party chairmanship, currently held by Lapid, will not be
held until 2020.The Jewish Home party is not purely democratic
either, as its party list was based on a joint list of two parties, one
of which is determined by a selection committee.Lapid and Bennett, whose parties forged a
partnership after last January’s elections and negotiated together about
entering Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, have been increasingly locking
horns, most recently over a controversial bill that would extend to gay male couples child benefits that have thus far been reserved for mothers. The bill, which eventually passed its first reading, was originally vetoed by the Jewish Home party in December.Bennett also denounced Lapid’s support last

ruled that Orthodox women should not serve in the IDF, calling his

the identity of the next chairman of the influential Knesset Foreign
Affairs and Defense Committee. With both men refusing to budge on their

Israel’s chief negotiator with
the Palestinians, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, on Saturday lashed out
at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, saying in an
uncharacteristic critique that if he stuck to his “unacceptable
positions” the Palestinians would suffer the consequences.Speaking
in an interview with Channel 2, Livni said Abbas’s positions were “not
only unacceptable to us but to the whole world, and if he continues to
stick to them, then the Palestinians will be the ones to pay the price.”Abbas has recently stated that no peace
agreement would be possible without all of East Jerusalem [including the
Old City] as the Palestinian capital, has staunchly refused to
recognize Israel’s self-definition as the state of the Jewish people,
and has demanded the right of return
for Palestinian refugees and their descendants to Israel proper, saying
nobody but the refugees themselves could negotiate away that right.Livni’s highly unusual warning — she has long publicly endorsed Abbas as a partner for viable peace terms — echoed statements made by US Secretary of State John Kerry
on Friday. Speaking in Davos, Kerry said that ”If [the Palestinians]
fail to achieve statehood now, there’s no guarantee another opportunity
will follow anytime soon.” He also emphasized that in order for the
talks to yield results, leaders on both sides would have to make
“courageous decisions necessary to embrace what would be fair and what
would work.”Despite her
grim assessment of the Palestinian Authority president’s negotiation
stance, Livni said she hoped Israel and the Palestinians would be able
to reach an agreement in the three remaining months of talks, which
began in July 2013. Kerry and the two sides had agreed on a nine-month
negotiating period, which ends in May, though the US secretary is now
trying to finalize a new “framework” agreement to serve as the basis for
talks extending beyond that deadline.Livni also related to the Israeli public’s low
expectations of a peace deal emerging from the talks, saying: “The role
of a leader is to create a reality and not to be influenced by polls.”
According to a recent poll by Channel 2, 87% of the Israeli public
believes the negotiations will not yield a peace agreement.
The US State Department said at the weekend
that Washington is working on a framework agreement “based on our
discussions with both sides and the parties leading up to this point”
which “will have details setting the parameters for the discussion on
all of the issues.”Kerry alluded to the possible provisions of a
framework agreement in his speech at the World Economic Forum on
Friday: “An independent state for Palestinians wherever they may be;
security arrangements for Israel that leave it more secure, not less; a
full, phased, final withdrawal of the Israeli army; a just and agreed
solution to the Palestinian refugee problem; an end to the conflict and
all claims and mutual recognition of the nation-state of the Palestinian
people and the nation-state of the Jewish people.”Livni, who heads the coalition’s centrist Hatnua Party, also appeared to contradict statements made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud)
in Davos on Friday, in which he asserted that ”I do not intend to
evacuate any settlements, I don’t intend to uproot any Israeli.” It was
not entirely clear from the context whether Netanyahu was referring to
all settlements or only those in the Jordan Valley.“Most of the Israelis reside in settlement
blocs which will be part of the state of Israel in the future, and they
will remain in their homes,” Livni said. “Concerning the rest, we’re
conducting a dialog.”
