Dozens of Palestinians wounded in Al-Aqsa clashes
APR 16,14-YahooNews

Jerusalem (AFP) - Dozens of Palestinians were wounded in clashes with Israeli police that erupted Wednesday when Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound was opened to Jewish visitors, an AFP correspondent said.Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP that Palestinians threw "stones and firecrackers" at police when they opened the walled compound's gates.Police responded with stun grenades, Rosenfeld said, and closed the complex to the Jewish visitors after a small number had toured the site.An AFP correspondent at the scene said dozens of Palestinians were wounded by rubber-coated bullets and stun grenade canisters, and were staying inside the Al-Aqsa mosque out of fear they would be arrested when leaving. The compound, in Jerusalem's Old City, is revered as the location of the biblical Jewish temples and is considered Judaism's holiest place. It also houses the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.Rosenfeld said the situation on "Temple Mount," the Jewish term for the complex, was "calm again" and police had left the site.He noted that in a separate incident elsewhere in Jerusalem's Old City a police officer was lightly wounded by stones thrown by Palestinians.Non-Muslim visits to the Al-Aqsa complex are permitted and regulated by police, but Jews are not allowed to pray at the site.Jews are marking Passover, a seven-day holiday which in ancient times was marked by mass pilgrimage to the Temple Mount. On Monday, police arrested five Jews suspected of intending to sacrifice a goat at the Al-Aqsa mosque complex, in a bid to reenact an ancient Passover ritual.Jewish fringe groups have vowed to build a third Temple, but Israeli political and religious authorities have repeatedly dismissed the idea.

Wounded 9-Year-Old 'Lucky to be Alive' After Terror Attack-Almog Mizrahi was injured in the terror ambush that killed a police officer. 'We will get over it,' says his mother.-By Oranit Etzer-First Publish: 4/16/2014, 2:33 PM-IsraelNationalNews

Among those wounded in the terror shooting near Hevron Friday was a nine-year-old boy, Almog Mizrahi of Beit Shemesh. While sharing the same last name with Baruch Mizrahi of Modiin, the police officer who was killed, Almog was in a separate car with his mother and his sister, Lotam. He was released from hospital Wednesday morning, after an operation in which the bullet that struck him was removed from his chest. “I am very lucky that it didn't hit my heart,” he told Channel 2 television. “I feel great now. It's a good thing the bullet stopped where it did.”"I feel that I have been saved on this holiday,” he added.Almog's mother, Vardit, recalled: “Suddenly I heard gunfire, and I felt ricochets, and despite the panic we kept on driving. The boy said to me, 'I'm starting to bleed,' and then I stopped the vehicle to see what happened, and again there was a burst of bullets.”She stopped the car next to a military position, where an IDF medic and emergency services met the family. Lotam is still suffering from anxiety, she said, “but we will get over it. Almog got his life as a present.”Hadassah Mizrahi, whose husband Baruch was killed in the attack and who was wounded herself, told IDF Radio that she tried not to let her children, who were in the car, see their father's wounds, “but they saw it, and my children said: 'Daddy, what happened? Wake up! Wake up! Daddy, why aren't you moving?'”

Israelis, Palestinians seeking to extend peace talks: US
APR 16,14-YahooNews

Washington (AFP) - Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are hammering out a way to extend their faltering peace talks beyond an April 29 deadline, a US official said Tuesday, refuting calls from a leading daily to call it quits.More talks between the two sides will be held on Wednesday, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, although it was not immediately clear if US lead negotiator Martin Indyk would take part."The parties are working right now on an agreement to extend the negotiations, and that means extending the negotiations past April 29," Psaki told reporters."There are naturally a range of issues being discussed. There are steps that both parties would need to take in order to improve the conditions for peace but the parties remain highly engaged," she said. The peace talks, which were kickstarted by US Secretary of State John Kerry in July after a three-year hiatus, hit a major crisis this month when both sides took what Washington has called unhelpful steps. The Palestinians launched moves to join 15 UN treaties and bodies, while Israel refused to release the last tranche of Palestinian prisoners and unveiled plans for 700 more settler homes in east Jerusalem."Both parties tell us they want negotiations to continue and they're searching for a path to do just that," Psaki told reporters. She dismissed a call from the editorial board of The New York Times, which headlined an opinion piece late Monday "In the Middle East, Time to Move on" and argued that neither side had shown they were serious about making peace."It is time for the administration to lay down the principles it believes must undergird a two-state solution, should Israelis and Palestinians ever decide to make peace," the respected daily wrote."Then President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry should move on and devote their attention to other major international challenges like Ukraine."Psaki said she had read the editorial but did not agree with the notion."Neither do the negotiators. Neither do the parties. Neither does the secretary," she said."The Israeli and the Palestinian people deserve a two-state solution where parties are living side by side and they have the economic opportunity and the security that they deserve," Psaki added."And that's why the parties remain committed and why they're working so hard on extending negotiations."

More than 300 people missing after South Korean ferry sinks: coastguard
By Narae Kim - APR 16,14-YahooNews

JINDO, South Korea (Reuters) - Almost 300 people were missing after a ferry sank off South Korea on Wednesday, the coastguard said, in what could be the country's biggest peacetime disaster in nearly 20 years. The ferry was carrying 459 people, of whom 164 were rescued, coastguard officials said. Two people were confirmed dead after the ferry listed heavily onto its side and capsized in apparently calm conditions off South Korea's southwest coast. The Ministry of Security and Public Administration had earlier reported that 368 people had been rescued and that about 100 were missing. But it later described those figures as a miscalculation, turning what had first appeared to be a largely successful rescue operation into potentially a major disaster. The cause of the disaster was not immediately clear although some survivors reported that the ship appeared to have been involved in some sort of impact."It was fine then the ship went 'boom' and there was a noise of cargo falling," said Cha Eun-ok, who said she was on deck of the ferry taking photographs when the disaster began."The on-board announcement told people to stay put ... people who stayed are trapped," she said in Jindo, the nearest town from the scene of the accident. There was confusion about the total number of passengers on board, as authorities revised the figure down from 477 saying some had been double counted, amid growing frustration and anger among families of the passengers. Many of the passengers were children and their teachers from a high school in Seoul on a field trip to Jeju island, about 100 km (60 miles) south of the Korean peninsula. As well the passengers, there were 150 vehicles on board the ferry Sewol, officials said. Witnesses said many people were likely still inside the vessel. An official from the Danwon High School in Ansan, a Seoul suburb, had earlier said all of its 338 students and teachers had been rescued but that could not be confirmed by the coastguard or other officials involved in the rescue. The school official asked not to be identified.

"LOUD IMPACT"

The ferry began to list badly about 20 km (12 miles) off the southwest coast as it headed for Jeju.A member of the crew of a government ship involved in the rescue, who said he had spoken to members of the sunken ferry's crew, said the area was free of reefs or rocks and the cause was likely some sort of malfunction on the vessel. There were reports of the ferry having veered off its course but coordinates of the site of the accident provided by port authorities indicated it was not far off the regular shipping lane.Several survivors spoke of hearing a "loud impact" before the ship started listing and rolling on its side.Within a couple of hours, the Sewol lying on its port side. Soon after, the ship had completely turned over, with only the forward part of its white and blue hull showing above the water.Coastguard vessels and fishing boats scrambled to the rescue with television footage showing rescuers pulling passengers in life vests out of the water as their boats bobbed beside the ferry's hull.Other passengers were winched to safety by helicopters. The ferry left from the port of Incheon, about 30 km (20 miles) west of Seoul, late on Tuesday. It sent a distress signal early on Wednesday, the coastguard said, triggering a rescue that involved almost 100 coastguard and navy vessels and fishing boats, as well as 18 helicopters.A U.S. navy ship was at the scene to help, the U.S. Seventh Fleet said, adding it was ready to offer more assistance. The area of the accident was clear of fog, unlike further north up the coast which had been shrouded in heavy fog that led to the cancellation of many ferry services. The coastguard said one person had been found dead inside the sinking ferry. An official from the Mokpo Hankook hospital on the mainland said another person had died soon after arriving at its emergency ward. That person was later identified as one of the students on the school trip.Television and still pictures showed the stricken ferry surrounded by debris, rescue ships, and inflatable lifeboats. The ship has a capacity of about 900 people, an overall length of 146 meters (480 feet) and it weighs 6,586 gross metric tons (1 metric ton = 1.1023 tons). Shipping records show it was built in Japan in 1994.(Additional reporting by Ju-Min Park, Choonsik Yoo, Meeyoung Cho and Seoul bureau, writing by Jack Kim; Editing by Paul Tait, Mark Bendeich and Robert Birsel)

Jordanian warplanes destroy vehicles trying to cross from Syria: spokesman
APR 16,14-YahooNews

AMMAN (Reuters) - Jordanian warplanes hit and destroyed several vehicles trying to cross the border from Syria, a government spokesman said on Wednesday, underlining Amman's concern about incursions from areas controlled by Syrian rebels."There was an attempt to infiltrate across the border from Syria by a number of vehicles," said spokesman Mohammad al-Momani, also a cabinet minister, told Reuters.A Jordanian security source said the targets were Syrian rebels in civilian cars mounted with machine guns.It was unclear whether rebels who have dominated swathes of territory along Syria's southern border with Jordan might have been seeking refuge inside Jordan from fighting with President Bashar al-Assad's forces that has raged in the region.Momani said the kingdom was increasingly worried about infiltration from Syria. "We are worried about cases of infiltration ... and reports that talk about armed groups that are close to the border and the absence of security there."Amman has tightened already firm controls along the 370-km (230 mile) border to try to prevent Jordanian Islamist militants who have joined the rebels from crossing back into Jordan. They are seen as a domestic security threat.(Reporting by Suleiman Al-Khalidi; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Rivals show force in eastern Ukraine before talks
By Gabriela Baczynska and Thomas Grove - APR 16,14-YahooNews

KRAMATORSK/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukrainian government forces and separatist pro-Russian militia staged rival shows of force in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday amid escalating rhetoric on the eve of crucial four-power talks in Geneva on the former Soviet country's future.Government troops drove seven armored personnel carriers flying the Ukrainian flag into the town of Kramatorsk after securing control of a nearby airfield from the rebels on Tuesday, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to warn of the risk of civil war.But just 15 km (9 miles) away, armed men in different types of combat fatigues drove six armored personnel carriers, one flying the Russian flag, into the town of Slaviansk, stopping outside the town hall, which is occupied by separatists. The armed men waved as they drove in, and some people waved back and shouted: "Well done lads!" and "Russia" Russia!"Overhead, a Ukrainian jet fighter carried out several minutes of aerobatics above the town's main square in a clear show of strength by Kiev's forces. In the industrial city of Donetsk, at least 20 armed separatists occupied the city council building, a spokeswoman for the council said. The muscle-flexing and inflamed rhetoric heightened fears of violence after Moscow-backed gunmen occupied public buildings in 10 eastern towns and cities in the last week. The Kiev government is seeking to reassert control slowly and without bloodshed before Thursday's Geneva meeting at which the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers are due to meet for the first time in the presence of the United States and the European Union.Russia, which has refused to recognize Ukraine's pro-Western government since Moscow-backed President Viktor Yanukovich was ousted by mass protests in February, sought to dramatize instability in its neighbor ahead of those talks.

BRINK OF CIVIL WAR

Putin told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone call late on Tuesday that Kiev had "embarked on an anti-constitutional course" by using the army against the rebels."The sharp escalation of the conflict puts the country, in effect, on the brink of civil war," a Kremlin statement quoted him as saying.Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk reacted by accusing Moscow of "exporting terrorism to Ukraine".Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking in Vietnam before heading to Geneva, said Kiev should listen to what he called the voice of the people of Ukraine and avoid force."It is unacceptable to use (the armed) forces in the eastern Ukraine," he told reporters in Hanoi. The Ukrainian government launched what it called a "special operation" on Tuesday against separatist militia in the Russian-speaking East, although aside from a landing by airborne troops the action was limited and avoided casualties.Soldiers disembarked from two helicopters at the airfield 10 km (6 miles) from Kramatorsk, where reporters heard gunfire that seemed to prevent an air force plane from landing. There was no sign of violence in the area on Wednesday, but civilians watching the armored vehicles enter the town reflected the sharp political divisions in the mainly Russian-speaking southeastern Donbass region.A group of about 30 local residents blocked the APCs briefly and tried to prevent them going through, a Reuters witness said. Soldiers dismounted and pushed them away. One shot was fired in the air in a brief scuffle before the vehicles moved on.The protesters managed to take away one hand-held radio and two rifle magazines from soldiers."I think Donbass should be an independent country allied with Russia," said a local resident who gave his name as Olexander. "My homeland is the Soviet Union. We just need to chop off the rotten west of Ukraine and we'll be fine."

CRIMEAN PARALLELS

Elsewhere in Kramatorsk, there was no overt sign of hostility as several hundred people milled around another cluster of six APCs from the 25th paratroop brigade from Dnieperpetrovsk. Some residents gave the soldiers tea and bread. But one man, who gave his name as Sergei, said the troops were unwelcome, contrasting the use of the army with the authorities' tolerance of a protest camp on the central Maidan square in the capital."I don't like these troops. As far as Kiev is concerned, we are not people," he said. "For some reason they didn't send tanks onto the Maidan (Independence Square in Kiev) but they send troops to us. Donbass will not forgive this. The country does not exist any more."While troops were not deployed during the protests that ousted Yanukovich in Kiev, police snipers shot dead dozens of protesters. The United States and the EU have accused Moscow of orchestrating the separatist operation in eastern Ukraine as it did in the Ukrainian Black Sea province of Crimea before annexing the region last month.Russia, which Western governments says has massed about 40,000 troops just across the border with eastern Ukraine, denies the charge. The Kremlin is demanding that Kiev accept a loose federal structure for Ukraine. On Thursday, acting Ukrainian President Oleksander Turchinov declared a much-needed victory over pro-Russian rebels by saying the Kramatorsk air base had been "liberated". But the government made no immediate attempt to dislodge separatist gunmen elsewhere.Ukraine's state security service said an "anti-terrorist" operation was also in progress against separatists in the nearby town of Slaviansk but there was no immediate evidence of action.Nonetheless, Kiev's stated resolve to challenge militants it says are orchestrated by the Kremlin, marked an escalation of the deepest East-West crisis since the Cold War.The standoff has raised fears in the West and in Kiev that Russia might intervene militarily to "protect" Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine,A spokesman for U.S. President Barack Obama said Ukraine's government was obliged to respond to "provocations" in the east, but Washington was not considering sending arms to Kiev. The White House said it was seriously considering adding to sanctions imposed after the annexation of Crimea, but the State Department said such action was unlikely before the Geneva meeting.(Additional reporting by Christian Lowe in Moscow, Richard Balmforth in Kiev and Nguyen Phuong Linh in Hanoi; Writing by Paul Taylor; Editing by Will Waterman and Giles Elgood)

NATO ups military presence amid Russian threat
By JUERGEN BAETZ and JOHN-THOR DAHLBURG - APR 16,14-YahooNews

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO is strengthening its military footprint along its eastern border immediately in response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, the alliance's chief said Wednesday.Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said NATO's air policing aircraft will fly more sorties over the Baltic region and allied ships will deploy to the Baltic Sea, the eastern Mediterranean and elsewhere if needed."We will have more planes in the air, mores ships on the water and more readiness on the land," Fogh Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels, declining to give exact troop figures.Moscow must make clear "it doesn't support the violent actions of well-armed militias or pro-Russian separatists" in eastern Ukraine, he added.NATO's eastern members — including Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland — have been wary following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, demanding a more robust military deterrence to counter neighboring Russia. He said the NATO deployments are about "deterrence and de-escalation" in the face of Russia's aggressive behavior. The NATO chief did not mention naval deployments to the Black Sea — which Russia would likely see as a direct aggression even though NATO members Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey also border the sea. He insisted, however, that "more will follow if needed."NATO estimates Russia has amassed some 40,000 troops on Ukraine's eastern border and could invade parts of the country within days if it wished. Fogh Rasmussen urged Russia to pull those troops back. The 28-nation alliance has already suspended most cooperation and talks with Russia. The United States has dispatched fighter planes to Poland and the Baltics, enabling NATO to reinforce air patrols on its eastern border. NATO also performs daily AWACs surveillance flights over Poland and Romania.

Russian economy hit by Ukraine turmoil
By LAURA MILLS - APR 16,14-YahooNews

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's economy slowed sharply in the first three months of the year as uncertainty over the crisis in Ukraine spooked investors into pulling money out of the country, a government minister said Wednesday.Economy Minister Alexei Ulyukayev told parliament that growth was only 0.8 percent in the first quarter — far short of the ministry's earlier prediction of 2.5 percent — because of "the acute international situation of the past two months" as well as "serious capital flight."Russian markets have been rattled by tensions between Moscow and neighboring Ukraine, where Russia annexed the Black Sea region of Crimea last month. The main stock index in Moscow tanked 10 percent in March, wiping out billions in market capitalization. In the first three months of 2014, the ruble lost 9 percent against the dollar, making imports more expensive, while spooked investors pulled about $70 billion out of the country — more than in all of 2013.Among investors' chief concerns are that the U.S. and European Union might escalate their sanctions against Russia to affect trade, particularly in the valuable energy market. Europe is Russia's largest trading partner. It buys more than three-quarters of Russia's crude oil and natural gas exports, which fund about half the government budget. So far, the U.S. and the EU sanctions have been limited to individual Russian politicians and businessmen close to the Kremlin. But the possibility of tougher sanctions has been enough to hinder investment, which dropped 4.8 percent in the first quarter, according to Ulyukayev. The Ukrainian crisis is coming at a bad time for the Russian economy, which faces fundamental problems, the World Bank said in March. The growth rate in 2013 was the lowest in 13 years after a slump in 2009 caused by the global financial crisis. The World Bank predicted the economy could shrink by a dramatic 1.8 percent this year if instability over Ukraine continues and Russia is hit with more Western sanctions.Tensions have only increased in April, as NATO accused Russia of amassing troops on its border for a possible invasion of Ukraine and the authorities in Kiev say Russia is backing armed militants in the country's east, where pro-Russian activists have seized government buildings and police stations.

Yemen's al Qaeda leader vows to attack America in new video

DUBAI (Reuters) - The leader of Al Qaeda's wing in Yemen has vowed to attack the United States, in a video apparently showing a gathering of the group celebrating a mass jailbreak of fighters. In February, attackers mounted a bomb, grenade and gun assault on the main prison in Sanaa in which 29 inmates, including 19 jailed for terrorism-related crimes, escaped. The 15-minute video, dated March 2014 and posted on a website used by Islamists, shows masked men waving al Qaeda's black flag and celebrating the arrival of the freed prisoners. Its authenticity could not be independently verified."The Crusader enemy, dear brothers, still possesses cards which he moves around. We have to remember that we are always fighting the biggest enemy," says a man speaking in the open in a mountainous area, whom the video identifies as its leader Nasser al-Wuhaishi."We have to remove the cross, (and) the bearer of the cross, America," said Wuhaishi, who appeared with his face uncovered, wearing a T-shirt and sporting the dagger common among Yemeni men.The video, entitled "Images from the reception of the freed prisoners from Sanaa's central prison", included testimony from fighters involved in the jailbreak."We planned that we would need 10 hand grenades," said a man identified as Munir al-Bouni.Another man said: "Once you got out, you turned right and the guys were waiting."

DRINKING JUICE AND SINGING SONGS

The video showed men arriving in white pickup trucks and others greeting Wuhaishi. Others carried rifles, and some sat on the ground drinking juice. Some spoke or sang through microphones and loudspeakers. Abdulrazzaq al-Jamal, a journalist who has interviewed members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), said it was the largest known gathering of al Qaeda in Yemen."It included about 400 people, and these are not all the members of the group. This gathering is a confirmation that al Qaeda is gaining strength and influence," he told Reuters.Formed in 2009, AQAP has attacked military targets, tourists and diplomats in Yemen and taken over territory for long periods.U.S. drone attacks have killed several suspected AQAP figures, including Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born Islamist cleric accused of links to a plot to bomb a Detroit-bound airliner in 2009 and U.S. cargo planes in 2010."Al Qaeda will gain strength as there continues to be division and weakness in security performance," said Ali al-Sarari, political adviser to Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa."The last appearance (the video) shows that Yemen is confronting a dangerous challenge. And if the security performance continues in this manner, then Yemen will face an even bigger failure than what it has faced in the past."(Writing by Yara Bayoumy; editing by Sami Aboudi and Andrew Roche)

JEREMEIAH 49:35-37 (IN IRAN AT THE BUSHEHR OR ARAK NUKE SITE SOME BELIEVE)
35  Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam,(IRAN/BUSHEHR NUCLEAR SITE) the chief of their might.(MOST DANGEROUS NUKE SITE IN IRAN)
36  And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven,(IRANIANS SCATTERED OR MASS IMIGARATION) and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.(WORLD IMMIGRATION)
37  For I will cause Elam (IRAN-BUSHEHR NUKE SITE) to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger,(ISRAELS NUKES POSSIBLY) saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:(IRAN AND ITS NUKE SITES DESTROYED)

ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11  In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
12  Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations,(USELESS U.N) that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13  The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14  And behold at evening tide trouble; and before the morning he is not.(ASSAD KILLED IN OVERNIGHT RAID) This is the portion of them that spoil us,(ISRAEL) and the lot of them that rob us.

AMOS 1:5
5  I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden:(IRAQ) and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir,(JORDAN) saith the LORD.

JEREMEIAH 49:23-27
23  Concerning Damascus.(SYRIA) Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea;(WAR SHIPS WITH NUKES COMING ON SYRIA) it cannot be quiet.
24  Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25  How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26  Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
27  And I will kindle a fire (NUKES OR BOMBS) in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.(ASSADS PALACES POSSIBLY IN DAMASCUS)

First Documented Use of US Anti-Tank Weapons by Syrian Rebels-Experts say footage of BGM-71 TOW anti-tank rocket used by moderate rebel groups significant, but not a game-changer.By Ari Soffer-First Publish: 4/16/2014, 2:57 PM-IsraelNationalNews

The first footage of Syrian rebels using advanced US-made anti-tank weaponry has emerged, in what some experts say represents an important, though not necessarily game-changing development.Other videos have featured the rockets in the hands of the Syrian Revolutionary Front and another rebel brigade called Awliya wa Katalib al-Shaheed Ahmed al-Abdo. Both are generally seen as moderate, although concerns have been raised over the SRF's cooperation with Al Qaeda affiliate the Nusra Front. It is unclear whether the weaponry was supplied by Washington or by a US ally such as Saudi Arabia, possibly with American approval.According to Reuters, although only a small number of uses of American-made rockets have been documented, they are becoming increasingly visible on the ground."With U.S.-made TOW anti-tank missiles now seen in the hands of three groups in the north and south of Syria, it is safe to say this is important," said Charles Lister, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution Doha Centre and one of the first to identify the weapons. The US and other western allies have been largely hesitant to provide military aid to rebel groups, fearing that some of the weaponry could end up in the hands of Al Qaeda-linked groups - much to the frustration of rebel-backers Qatar and Saudi Arabia.Analysts have said the limited injection of US-made anti-tank weaponry, though significant, would not alter the shape of the battlefield in war-torn Syria. Regime forces recently retook the Christian town of Maaloula, and have been making gains in other areas as well.Rebels still largely control northern and eastern Syria, with the regime in control of central cities and much of the west. Both regime and rebel forces have made considerable use of foreign arms, with Assad's forces boasting ever-more advanced Russian arms and rebels using Chinese and other weapons supplied primarily by Gulf backers.

Official: Iran will not discuss missile program
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI - APR 16,14-YahooNews

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Tehran will not discuss its ballistic missiles as part of ongoing talks with world powers on a final agreement to curb the Iranian nuclear program, the country's defense minister said Wednesday. The remarks by Gen. Hossein Dehghan came as a rebuff of recent comments by U.S. State Department's nuclear negotiator, Wendy Sherman, who said Iran's ballistic capabilities should be addressed as part of a comprehensive agreement with Iran.Iran's ballistic program has also been a concern for the West since ballistic missile can be used to deliver nuclear warheads. Iran insists the missile program has no nuclear dimensions but is also adamant that its defense industry is a "red line" as a topic at the nuclear talks. The U.S. has argued that a U.N. Security Council resolution bans Iran from "undertaking any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons."But Dehghan said Iran's missile program has "nothing to do" with the nuclear negotiations and that it has no nuclear dimensions."Iran's missiles are not up for discussion under any circumstances," he told the semiofficial Fars news agency. "Iran's missiles are only our concern ... We don't accept any intervention from anybody on this issue."Tehran has developed a series of missiles, some of which have a range 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) — enough to reach much of the Middle East. Military commanders have described them as a strategic asset and a strong deterrent, capable of hitting U.S. bases or Israel in the event of a strike on Iran. The Pentagon released a rare public report in 2012 noting significant advances in Iran's missiles technology and acknowledging that Tehran has improved their accuracy and firing capabilities.Iran and six world powers — the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany — reached an interim deal in November that put limits on Iran's uranium enrichment program in return for the easing of some sanctions. Core sanctions, however, remain in place — including measures targeting Iran's oil exports, the pillar of its economy.Talks are ongoing for a final deal that would remove all possibilities that the Islamic Republic could use its capabilities to build a nuclear weapon. The talks are to continue on May 13 and the future scope of Iran's uranium enrichment program has remained the toughest issue. In a positive sign, diplomats said Tuesday that the United Nations will release a report this week certifying that Iran's ability to make a nuclear bomb has been greatly reduced because it has diluted half of its stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium, which is only a technical step away from the 90-percent grade used to arm nuclear weapons. The move was part of Iran's commitments under the interim deal. The diplomats, who are familiar with Iran's adherence to its commitments, demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the confidential International Atomic Energy Agency report, due for release Wednesday or Thursday.___Associated Press writer George Jahn in Vienna contributed to this report.
