Yaalon: Let's See Abbas Disarm Hamas-If Palestinian Authority chief does not take over Gaza and disarm Hamas, the reconciliation is a sham, says defense minister.-By Ido Ben Porat-First Publish: 6/5/2014, 9:20 PM-IsraelNationalNews

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Thursday that if Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas (aka Abu Mazen) does not disarm Hamas, the much-vaunted PLO/Fatah-Hamas reconciliation will have been proven to be nothing but a sham.In a meeting with foreign attachés stationed in Israel, held at the Kirya base in Tel Aviv, Yaalon predicted that “Abu Mazen will not rule Gaza.”"If he reconciled with Hamas, we demand that he control the [Gaza] Strip and disarm Hamas. If he does not do this, the reconciliation is a false display, meant to trick the world.”Yaalon stressed that he seeks peace, but does not believe in self-deception. “If the Palestinian leadxership, which the world perceives as moderate, is unwilling to recognize our right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people, and declare that any agreement will be the end of the conflict and the end of demands, then what are we talking about? We are realistic.”"We are faced with many challenges, and they are turning into global challenges. Therefore, we must cooperate and share knowledge with each other,” he told the attachés. “The Middle East is becoming a source of instability in the entire world. The situation is chaotic. The central challenge is Iran. The Iranian regime is the number one cause of instability in the Middle East, and we identify its fingerprints in every conflict in the region.”Yaalon noted that Iran is involved in asisting Syrian president Assad to massacre his citizens, and helps terrorists who attack US forces in Afghanistan, besides assisting terror forces in Iraq, Bahrain, Yemen, Lebanon (Hizbullah) and Gaza (Islamic Jihad).“We fight the Iranian tentacles – for instance, in the form of the fire from Syria and Gaza, but the head is in Tehran,” he added. “And therefore, one way or another, be it diplomatic, economical or military, and as a last resort, the Iranian regime must be prevented from developing nuclear weapons. We will know how to defend ourselves if we have to.”

EU ‘deeply disappointed’ by settlement announcement-Threatening sanctions, 28-nation bloc calls on Israel to ‘reverse decision’ to build thousands of new units-By Marissa Newman June 5, 2014, 8:58 pm 13-The Times of Israel

The European Union said Thursday it was “deeply disappointed” over the Israeli announcement to commence construction of thousands of new units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and called on the government to “reverse this decision.”The EU also alluded to resolutions to sanction Israel for its settlements activity and vowed to “fully and effectively implement” them.Just before the EU condemnation, and hours after issuing tenders for 1,500 housing units, the Israeli government ordered officials to move forward with plans for an additional 1,800 settlement homes. The statement from the EU condemned 1,466 approved unites, but did not address the later notice. The move, which drew fierce condemnation from Palestinians and from the US ambassador to Israel, is seen as a response to the swearing in this week of a Hamas-backed Palestinian unity government that has been denounced by Israel but recognized by the US and EU, among others. The statement from the European Union accused Israel of threatening the peace process, which was suspended by Israel in April in response to the announcement of the Palestinian unity government.“The EU and its Member States have repeatedly called on all sides – most recently in May – to exercise maximum restraint and to avoid any unilateral action which may further undermine peace efforts and the viability of a two-state-solution, such as continued settlement expansion,” it said.“What is needed right now is constructive engagement, in order to create a climate conducive to resumed negotiations,” the statement added. “We call on the Israeli authorities to reverse this decision and to direct all their efforts toward an early resumption of the peace talks.”The statement evoked past EU decisions to sanction Israel for its settlement activity, saying: “We recall that the EU Foreign Affairs Council has also reaffirmed its commitment to fully and effectively implement existing legislation in relation to settlements.”Israel’s Housing and Construction Ministry on Wednesday published tenders for 1,500 units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in a move Minister Uri Ariel said was a response to the “Palestinian terror government” established earlier this week.Of the housing projects approved by Ariel’s ministry, over 700 are slated for the Etzion Bloc towns of Efrat and Beitar Illit, another 76 are planned in the town of Ariel, 78 in Alfei Menashe, 155 in Givat Ze’ev, and 400 in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo. An additional 38 are to be built outside what’s considered the major West Bank settlements blocs, in the West Bank settlement of Geva Binyamin, north of Jerusalem.AFP and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

EU Tells Israel to 'Reverse' Construction Plans-EU 'deeply disappointed' by plans for 3,300 new housing units in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, threatens 'isolation and damage to Israel.'By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 6/5/2014, 8:37 PM-IsraelNationalNews

The European Union (EU) on Thursday condemned Israeli announcements earlier in the day and on Wednesday night to build another 3,300 housing units in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem.
The EU said it is "deeply disappointed" by the Israeli plans to build more Jewish homes in the Biblical heartland of Israel."We call on the Israeli authorities to reverse this decision and to direct all their efforts towards an early resumption of the peace talks," the EU said in a statement, according to AFP.The EU statement added "we are deeply disappointed that the Israeli Land Administration has published new tenders for 1,466 housing units in settlements in East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank. This move is unhelpful to peace efforts."European diplomats told Walla! that by announcing the construction, Israel was "playing with fire," threatening that the construction "will cause international isolation and damage to Israel."Plans to build 1,800 housing units in the ten separate communities in the region were unfrozen on Thursday, after tenders for roughly 1,500 new homes in the region were announced Wednesday night. The moves were part of Israel's response to the establishment of the unity government between Fatah and the terrorist organization Hamas on Monday. The newly-unfrozen plans reportedly had been frozen by the government roughly three months ago, even though a building freeze was not an official part of the peace talks that fell apart just ahead of their April 29 deadline.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reportedly admitted last week that he had submitted to US pressure and canceled the IDF Civil Administration's high planning council meetings, effectively freezing all building and development in the region. The EU's condemnation followed that of US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro, who criticized the Jewish construction on Thursday. The American condemnation was not enough for the Palestinian Authority (PA), which called on the US later on Thursday to take "serious steps" against Israel over the move. For its part, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) vowed to appeal to the UN Security Council over the construction. It is worth noting that Jewish construction in Judea, Samaria and areas in Jerusalem over the 1949 Armistice lines is made the more crucial due to the housing crisis Israel is facing, with housing prices shooting up by 8% over the 12 months concluding in October 2013.

Australia Drops the Term 'Occupied' Regarding Jerusalem-Joint statement by Attorney General, Foreign Minister, could signal a 'major shift' in Australia's Middle East policy.-By Ari Soffer-First Publish: 6/5/2014, 11:43 AM-IsraelNationalNews

The Australian government has dropped the usage of the term "occupied" when referring to Jewish neighborhoods in parts of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinian Authority, in what could signal a significant shift in the country's Middle East policy. While Australia's previous foreign minister Bob Carr made no secret of his opposition to the existence of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, his successor Julie Bishop has struck a far more balanced tone, openly questioning claims that such communities are "illegal under international law".According to The Sydney Morning Herald, speaking on behalf of Bishop the country's attorney general, George Brandis, rejected such language, which he termed "unhelpful".''Australia supports a peaceful solution to the dispute between Israel and the Palestinian people, which recognizes the right of Israel to exist peacefully within secure borders and also recognizes the aspiration to statehood of the Palestinian people,'' Senator Brandis said Thursday.''The description of areas which are subject to negotiations in the course of the peace process by reference to historical events is unhelpful.''The description of East Jerusalem as 'Occupied East Jerusalem' is a term freighted with pejorative implications, which is neither appropriate nor useful.''Those comments came after Brandis irked some legislators the previous evening by refusing to define "East Jerusalem" as "occupied, claiming that no Australian government "acknowledges or accepts" the use of the term - despite Canberra's support of several past UN resolutions which had indeed used such language. Thursday's clarification was drafted in consultation with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and her departmental head Peter Varghese, according to the Herald.Independent Senator Nick Xenophon was among those angered by the remarks.''It's an extraordinary and reckless departure from the bipartisan approach of the last 47 years,'' he claimed.''It is contrary to the government's position it is completely unhelpful to walk away from the term 'occupied'. If you don't acknowledge historical facts, what are the hopes for lasting peace in the Middle East? ''Even Israel's strongest ally, the United States, does not hold this position.''

Israel approves 1,800 more West Bank homes-Announcement comes hours after government issued permits for 1,500 settlement units, in a move panned by the Palestinians-By AFP and Times of Israel staff June 5, 2014, 5:24 pm 5-The Times of Israel

The Israeli government on Thursday ordered officials to move forward with plans for another 1,800 settler homes, just hours after issuing tenders for 1,500 housing units, an official said.“The political echelon has ordered the Civil Administration to advance 1,800 new (housing) units,” the Israeli official told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to a Defense Ministry unit responsible for all West Bank planning issues. The order relates to construction in 10 settlements across the West Bank, all of which are at different stages of the planning process.Israeli media reports said the plans had been frozen by the government some three months ago.The announcement came just hours after Israel’s Housing Ministry published tenders for the construction of more than 1,500 new homes, 400 of them in East Jerusalem and the rest in the West Bank.Housing Minister Uri Ariel said after the first announcement that it was only the tip of the iceberg and chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat also said he saw the building tenders as a harbinger of more Israeli moves.“We believe this latest announcement is a clear sign that Israel is moving toward a major escalation, such as new settlement construction, the annexation of occupied territory and forcible transfer,” Erekat said. “In light of the Israeli announcement, we are carefully studying and weighing our response.”Israel said the move was in direct response to the establishment of a new Palestinian unity government, backed by the Islamist Hamas movement which calls for the destruction of the Jewish state.US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro denounced the plan.“It is time for the American administration to take serious steps against what the government of Israel is doing,” Nimr Hammad, an adviser to PA President Mahmoud Abbas, told AFP.The PLO pledged to appeal the Israeli measure with the UN Security Council.“The executive committee of the PLO views this latest escalation with the utmost of seriousness,” Hanan Ashrawi, a senior PLO official, said in an English-language statement. The executive committee “will counter it by addressing both the United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly as the proper way of curbing this grave violation and ensuring accountability,” she added.

Palestinians to appeal to UN over settlement expansion-Palestinian move comes after Israeli government approves 1,500 new housing units in West Bank and East Jerusalem-By AFP June 5, 2014, 2:46 pm 16-The Times of Israel

The Palestine Liberation Organization will appeal to the UN Security Council over Israel’s settlement construction, after Jerusalem invited tenders for another 1,500 settler homes, a senior PLO official said Thursday.“The executive committee of the PLO views this latest escalation with the utmost of seriousness,” Hanan Ashrawi said in an English-language statement. The executive committee “will counter it by addressing both the United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly as the proper way of curbing this grave violation and ensuring accountability,” she added. On Thursday, Israel’s Housing and Construction Ministry unveiled plans for the new homes, 400 of them in East Jerusalem, in what it said was a “fitting Zionist response” to the formation of a Palestinian unity government backed by the Islamist Hamas movement. The Palestinians threatened an “unprecedented” response to the move, with one senior official telling AFP the leadership was considering an appeal to the international justice system.“The Palestinian leadership is looking seriously into going to international courts against settlement activity,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The option of legal action against Israeli settlement building at the International Criminal Court in The Hague opened up after the Palestinians won observer state status at the United Nations in 2012.But they agreed to hold off on any such recourse for the duration of US-brokered peace negotiations with Israel, which collapsed earlier this year.“It is time to hold Israel accountable in front of international organisations in light of international law,” chief negotiator Saeb Erakat told AFP.“Those who fear the international courts should stop their war crimes against the Palestinian people, first and foremost of which is settlement activity.”

US envoy condemns new settlement building plans-Dan Shapiro criticizes Israel’s decision to push ahead 1,500 units in West Bank and East Jerusalem as response to Palestinian unity government-By Times of Israel staff June 5, 2014, 9:17 am 80-The Times of Israel

The US ambassador to Israel condemned on Thursday a plan to build 1,500 housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, announced as a retaliatory measure to the formation of a Palestinian unity government earlier this week.“We oppose settlement construction in the West Bank as well as announcements regarding such construction,” Dan Shapiro told Army Radio. “We would do so with or without this disputed case of a new Palestinian transitional government.”Shapiro’s statement was the first official US response to the Housing and Construction Ministry decision to publish tenders for the 1,500 units, announced early Thursday morning.Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel called the move an “appropriate Zionist response to the Palestinian terror government.”Of the housing projects approved by Ariel’s ministry, over 700 are slated for the Etzion Bloc settlements of Efrat and Beitar Illit south of Jerusalem, with another 76 planned in Ariel, 78 in Alfei Menashe, 155 in Givat Ze’ev, and 400 in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo. An additional 38 are to be built outside what’s considered the major West Bank settlements blocs, in the West Bank settlement of Geva Binyamin, north of Jerusalem. The settlement construction announcement came after opposing Palestinian parties Fatah and Hamas set aside their differences and formed a national unity government Monday, ending seven years of hostility.Israel and the US consider Hamas a terror group. Israel has opposed the government and called on the world to boycott it, but the US said it would continue to work with Ramallah, angering some in Jerusalem. Shapiro said, though, that the US did not recognize Hamas as a legitimate representative of the Palestinian people despite the establishment of the new government.“We have no illusions about Hamas; Hamas is a terrorist organization,” he said.“We have no ties with Hamas and we will not work with them, we will not give them assistance, and we will not work with any government of which Hamas is a member.”The new Palestinian cabinet sworn in Monday, considered a technocratic interim cabinet meant to steer the Palestinians toward new elections, does not include any Hamas ministers. The United States, the EU, the UN and Russia have all accepted to work with the cabinet.Jerusalem on Monday night slammed the United States for announcing that it will work with the new Palestinian unity government. Israeli officials said that Washington ought to be urging Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to disband his pact with Hamas and resume peace negotiations with Israel instead of associate with a terror group.US Secretary of State John Kerry responded to criticism Wednesday saying Abbas “made clear that this new technocratic government is committed to the principles of nonviolence, negotiations, recognizing the state of Israel, acceptance of the previous agreements and the Quartet principles.”“Based on what we know now about the composition of this technocratic government, which has no minister affiliated to Hamas and is committed to the principles that I describe, we will work with it as we need to, as appropriate,” he said.

Op-Ed: Saving Sgt. Bergdahl: Allah in the Rose Garden-Was it treachery or stupidity?-Published: Wednesday, June 04, 2014 10:58 PM-IsraelNationalNews-Jack Engelhard

Strangeness in America. But Israelis are used to this scene – a weeping Jewish family quietly welcoming home a son from captivity. Meanwhile there is dancing in Gaza and Ramallah. A thousand swapped Palestinian Arab murderers are paraded with kisses so that one Jewish soldier can go free. Israel does not bargain with terrorists – until it does. But we cannot judge a father’s heart and a mother’s tears.Since 1948 there have been some 20 prisoner exchanges between Israel and its enemies. Most recently, on October 18, 2011, Israel handed over 1,027 terrorists back to the hands of Hamas for Gilad Shalit. That is an incredibly lopsided percentage. Is this right? Is it wrong? Either way, Israel is forced to gamble and takes whatever it can from an insatiable foe.But America is not accustomed to scenes of jubilation in Afghanistan or elsewhere, after a single American soldier is traded for five Taliban terrorists who were serving time at Gitmo. That’s the deal that got Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl his freedom and earned for us a time to grovel.Swiftly, Afghan/Taliban warlord Mullah Omar gloated about the exchange: “A big victory for the entire Afghan Muslim nation.”But just as swiftly, revulsion set in throughout the Unites States of America.Who are these five terrorists who will soon be back into the fight? “They are the worst of the worst,” says Senator John McCain. He goes on: “There will be a price to pay for this exchange.”Senator Lindsey Graham calls the five a “Taliban dream team.” Indeed, a windfall for terror, though Obama maintains he did “the right thing.” The same president who had no time to worry about thousands of veterans dying for proper health care throughout the mismanaged VA system suddenly finds a heart for a single American.Who is Bowe Bergdahl? He is an American soldier from Idaho held by the Taliban for five years… and he may not be a hero, after all.His commander in the field, Michael Waltz, told Fox News’ Bret Baier: “He was not captured. He left his post. He left on his own. He has a lot of explaining to do.”Bergdahl, now recovering in a German hospital, has already explained himself. He has posted the following: “The horror that is America is disgusting.”Waltz says that at least six soldiers were killed in a futile search to rescue Bergdahl.Of all the scandals, this is the one that may stick to Obama. His administration is reeling from the sudden move.Members of his platoon call him a deserter. They are outraged that he is being hailed a hero.At least that was the message delivered by Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, who told the Sunday talk shows that Bergdahl “served with honor and distinction.” Yes, the same Susan Rice who bungled Benghazi over the airwaves and still has no shame doing it again. Like her boss, she counts on the media to cover for her. This time, for the first time, this is not happening. The investigation will begin, but there are serious questions as to whether Bergdahl is a deserter, or worse, a collaborator.Of all the scandals, this is the one that may stick to Obama. His administration is reeling from the sudden move.Did he not foresee the howls of indignation from all corners of the land? Of course not, spoiled as he has been from unconditional love. For six years and more the news media have served as his babysitter. The rest of us have stood by compliantly as he has scorched the Constitution. This one, though, is tough to swallow. People feel taken. That includes the press. They call it “the optics,” images that send a disturbing picture. Directly from Idaho, America’s heartland comes a man wearing a foreign get-up. This is Bob, Bowe Bergdahl’s father. He stands next to a beaming President Obama in the Rose Garden. Yes, the Rose Garden. Obama is ready for his close-up.He makes his usual speech. Bob Bergdahl steps to the microphone. Obama smiles favorably and knowingly when Bergdahl praises Allah for his son’s rescue.More than all the rest, that may be the moment to have awakened America from its slumber.Jack Engelhard writes a regular column for Arutz Sheva.
