Jews Again Banned from Temple Mount by Police-Police once again kept Jews off the Temple Mount over the Shavout holiday, visitors to the Temple Mount said.By Yosef Berger-First Publish: 6/4/2014, 10:41 PM-IsraelNationalNews

Hundreds of Jews who attempted to ascend the Temple Mount Wednesday morning were shocked to discover that they were barred entry onto the holy site. The ban came after Muslim groups demanded that Jews stay off the site, and despite a promise by police that Jews would be allowed to enter it.Tens of thousands of Jews visited the Kotel (Western Wall) Tuesday night and Wednesday, celebrating the holiday of Shavuot. Among the customs of the holiday is an all-night Torah learning session, topped by morning prayers that began at dawn. Shavuot is also one of the three festivals in which Jews are bidden to “appear before G-d,” visiting the Holy Temple – which is on the Temple Mount. In commemoration of this commandment, many Jews ascend the Mount on the Passover, Sukkot, and Shavuot.Jews attempting to enter the site on Wednesday morning witnessed dozens of armed Arabs who were apparently waiting for the gates to open, planning to being a riot. Police did not intervene to remove the group which appeared to be preparing for a riot, but instead kept Jews off the site. Activists said that this was at least the fifth festival in row in which Jews were banned from the Mount.Dozens of people who attempted to enter the site – many of them coming to Jerusalem specifically for this purpose – said that they would petition the High Court to demand that police provide them with the necessary permits and protection to allow them to enter the site.Activists said that they would also demand that the government replace Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharonovich, whom they say is personally behind preventing Jews from ascending the Mount.Activists also added that they would once again attempt to enter the Temple Mount site on Thursday. They said that Wednesday's closure may have been due to complaints by Jordan over the visit of 400 Jews to the Mount on Tuesday. Muslim worshippers, who often harass Jews on the Mount, were not allowed access because police and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) had received intelligence about “malicious intentions” and Islamist incitement calling on Arabs to riot and prevent the Jews from entering.Jordan chose to condemn Israel's deployment of large number of troops and police on the Temple Mount.According to the official Petra news agency, Amman said Israel’s move is tantamount to “a flagrant violation of international law.”The Temple Mount is Judaism's most sacred spot. Israeli police, in an attempt to appease the Muslim Waqf which was left in charge of the Temple Mount compound after the 1967 Six Day War, ban Jews from praying or performing any other form of worship.Police sometimes close the Mount to Jews altogether in response to Muslim riots - for days or weeks at a time - despite evidence that such violence is usually planned in advance for the specific purpose of forcing Jews out.

Jordan Condemns Israel for Allowing Jews on Temple Mount-Jordan condemns Israel's deployment of troops and police at the Temple Mount, claims Israel violated international law.By Elad Benari, Canada-First Publish: 6/4/2014, 1:35 AM-IsraelNationalNews

The Temple Mount became Jewish again on Tuesday, and Jordan didn’t like it.Temple organizations reported Tuesday morning that about 400 Jews had ascended to the Mount in the morning hours, and that police allowed them in without undue delays.Muslim worshippers, who often harass Jews on the Mount, were not allowed in because police and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) had received intelligence about “malicious intentions” and Islamist incitement calling on Arabs to riot and prevent the Jews from entering. Jordan chose to condemn Israel's deployment of large number of troops and police inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque.According to the official Petra news agency, Amman said Israel’s move is tantamount to “a flagrant violation of international law.”The Jordanian Minister of State for Media Affairs, Mohammed Momani, slammed the Israeli act, which he said aimed at granting access to extremist Jews into the holy mosque. Momani warned that such actions would drag the region into a dangerous religious conflict.Jordan, in its capacity as guardian on holy places in Jerusalem, will continue to use all political and legal means and address all peace-loving people in the world to repel the Israeli aggression against the holy sanctities, the minister asserted, according to Petra. He called on the international community and international organizations to take action and pressure “the Israeli occupation authorities” to stop violations against the holy places in Jerusalem and prevent extremists from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Temple Mount is Judaism's most sacred spot. In March, two Arab rioters were arrested for attempting to attack MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud) as he visited the Temple Mount.Jordan ignores the Arab riots and Tuesday’s condemnation is not the first time that it has blamed Israel for “provocations” on the Temple Mount. In April, Jordan summoned the Israeli ambassador to the country to protest the “Israeli provocations” on the Temple Mount. This took place after Israel closed the Mount to members of the Waqf as a result of riots by Arab youths.Several days earlier, Jordan urged the United Nations Security Council to end Israeli "escalation" at the Temple Mount after it was opened to Jewish visitors.Previously, Jordan threatened to revoke its 1994 peace treaty with Israel over a historic debate in the Knesset about providing full religious freedom at Judaism's holiest site. Security Officials Prepared for 'Naksa Day' Violence-Arab extremists plan two 'major' events this week to protest Israel's Six Day War victory - but not many people expected to turn up.By Yaakov Levi-First Publish: 6/4/2014, 9:39 PM-IsraelNationalNews

Security forces were gearing up for two major protest events this week by Arab and left-wing extremists.Thursday marks “Naksa Day,” in which Palestinians demonstrate against the liberation of Judea, Samaria, and much of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War. Similar to “Nakba Day” - which mourns the Israeli victory during the 1947-48 War of Independence - Arabs in Israel and Palestinian Authority-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria hold protests and marches “mourning” their losses in the war, and the return of Jews to their historic homeland.Meanwhile, Friday is the day of the planned “Global March to Jerusalem,” in which Arabs from PA areas, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab countries embark on a walk to “invade” Jerusalem, attempting to use their sheer numbers to break through Israeli security and “conquer” the city. According to organizers, representatives of 45 countries “will peacefully march on Israeli embassies, or as close to Jerusalem as they can safely get, thus demanding an end to Israeli destruction of world heritage sites and breaches of international law in Jerusalem.”While there is a great deal of hype surrounding both events, they have generally not drawn many participants. The previous Global Marches (this year marks the third one) drew only a few thousand participants each. Counter-terror experts have revealed that Iran was backing the events.Israeli security officials said that they would be on high alert both days, but added that they did not expect either event to significantly impact on the daily routine of Israelis in any part of the country. The US embassy in Tel Aviv on Wednesday sent out warnings to American citizens in Israel to avoid areas where Arab demonstrations were taking place.“US citizens should avoid areas of demonstrations, if possible, and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. As always, US citizens should remain aware of their surroundings and monitor our public information for updates,” the embassy said.

Kerry Defends US Decision to Work with 'Palestinian Unity Gov't'-Sec. of State echoes claims that no Hamas ministers included in PA unity gov't; says decision doesn't mean US recognizing 'Palestine'.By AFP and Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 6/4/2014, 8:47 PM-IsraelNationalNews

Secretary of State John Kerry defended Wednesday a US decision to work with the new Palestinian Authority "unity government", despite Israeli criticism, claiming that it does not include any Hamas ministers. The United States, like Israel and the European Union, consider the Islamist group Hamas a terrorist organisation.Speaking to reporters in Beirut, Kerry said Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas "made clear that this new technocratic government is committed to the principles of non violence, negotiations, recognizing the state of Israel, acceptance of the previous agreements and the Quartet principles.""Based on what we know now about the composition of this technocratic government, which has no minister affiliated to Hamas and is committed to the principles that I describe, we will work with it as we need to, as appropriate."Kerry's statement echoed comments made by Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf on Friday."It is not a government backed by Hamas. There are no members of Hamas in the government," Harf told reporters. She added that the new unity government is a transitional one that is made up of individuals who are not politically associated with any party."Hamas is a designated terror organization in the U.S. and we will not provide it with any assistance. We don't have any contacts with Hamas," declared Harf, who added that Washington would judge the government by its actions.Kerry also said US preparedness to work with the Palestinian Authority does not mean recognition of a "Palestinian state"."The US does not recognize a government with respect to Palestine because that would recognize a state and there is no state," he said.A new PA cabinet was sworn in Monday, after a surprise reconciliation deal reached in April between Hamas and the PLO.The United States, the EU, the UN and Russia have all accepted to work with the cabinet.Despite the alliance with Hamas, which does not recognize Israel and is pledged to its destruction, Abbas has said the government would abide by the principles of the Middle East Quartet, which envisage the establishment of "two states for two peoples".The US' readiness to work with the new government has prompted fury from Israel, with Prime Minister Netanyahu branding it Tuesday as "simply unacceptable".Other Israeli officials have also reacted sharply; communications Minister Gilad Erdan called the United States “naive” following Psaki’s comments and Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz accused Washington of hypocrisy. While on an unscheduled visit to Beirut, Kerry said: "I want to make it very clear we are going to be watching it (the government) very closely, as we have said from day one, to absolutely ensure that it upholds each of those things it has talked about, that it doesn't cross the line."

Israel okays 1,500 West Bank homes in response to Palestinian unity-Housing minister publishes tenders for dozens of homes outside settlement blocs, says move retaliation against ‘terror government’-By Times of Israel staff June 5, 2014, 2:46 am 2

Israel’s Housing and Construction Ministry on Wednesday published tenders for 1,500 units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in a move Minister Uri Ariel said was a response to the “Palestinian terror government” established earlier this week.Of the housing projects approved by Ariel’s ministry, over 700 are slated for the Etzion Bloc towns of Efrat and Beitar Illit, another 76 are planned in the town of Ariel, 78 in Alfei Menashe, 155 in Givat Ze’ev, and 400 in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo. An additional 38 are to be built outside what’s considered the major West Bank settlements blocs, in the West Bank settlement of Geva Binyamin, north of Jerusalem.Referring to the establishment earlier this week of a Palestinian unity government which includes Hamas, an internationally recognized terrorist group, Ariel said the move was an “appropriate Zionist response to the Palestinian terror government.”“The right and obligation of the state of Israel to build across the country in order to reduce the price of housing is not in question, and I believe that these tenders were just the beginning,” the Jewish Home party minister said in a statement.Wednesday’s announcement ended what Israeli officials said had been a “silent freeze” on West Bank construction because of pressure from Washington. At a briefing with Times of Israel staffers last month, Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon said Israeli authorities recently imposed a “silent freeze” on planning for further settlement expansion. While construction work was taking place on already approved projects, no new developments were planned and no tenders and bids were being issued, Danon said at the time. The settlement construction announcement came a few days after opposing Palestinian parties Fatah and Hamas set aside their differences and formed a national unity government, ending seven years of hostility. Jerusalem on Monday night slammed the United States for announcing that it will work with the new Palestinian unity government. Israeli officials said that Washington ought to be urging Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to disband his pact with Hamas and resume peace negotiations with Israel instead of associate with a terror group.US Secretary of State John Kerry responded to criticism Wednesday saying Abbas “made clear that this new technocratic government is committed to the principles of non violence, negotiations, recognizing the state of Israel, acceptance of the previous agreements and the Quartet principles.”“Based on what we know now about the composition of this technocratic government, which has no minister affiliated to Hamas and is committed to the principles that I describe, we will work with it as we need to, as appropriate.”

Iron Dome launches for first time on Syrian border-Mortars fired from Syria land in Golan Heights, causing no injuries or damage; reports say Israel strikes back at Syrian tanks-By Times of Israel staff June 5, 2014, 12:52 am 0

The Iron Dome missile defense system attempted its first interception on the northern front Wednesday in a bid to down a mortar launched into the Golan Heights from Syria. No interception was confirmed. Two mortars fired from Syria fell into the Israeli-controlled area of the Golan Heights on Wednesday night. No damage or injuries were caused, the IDF spokesperson reported. The IDF confirmed the mortar fire from Syria, saying it was likely inadvertent.Defense sources told Ynet, however, that the mortars may have been celebratory fire by government forces following the announcement of incumbent Syrian President Basher Assad’s landslide victory in the presidential elections.Wildfires broke out in several areas of the Golan Heights near Alonei Habashan, likely as a result of the mortar fire, and firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.Unconfirmed Syrian rebel reports indicated that Israeli military positions fired on and destroyed two Syrian tanks in response to the mortar fire.
