Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. As pressure from the US and other countries grew for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, Hamas terrorists continued firing rockets at Israeli targets. Rockets were fired at several communities in the Gaza border area Monday morning and afternoon; Ashkelon was targeted as well. No injuries were reported in any of the attacks.Hamas said Monday that it expects Egypt to adjust the conditions it set out in its cease-fire proposal to match some of the terror group's demands. The IDF on Sunday confirmed firing a mortar round into a Gaza UN shelter where 15 people died on Thursday, but denied killing anyone at the site, according to AFP.Briefing journalists on the findings of an internal military enquiry into the incident at a UN school in Beit Hanoun, spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said that terrorists "in the vicinity" of the school fired mortar rounds and anti-tank rockets at Israeli forces.The army responded with mortar fire, sending a stray round into the compound."A single errant mortar (round) landed in the courtyard of the school," Lerner was quoted as having said."The courtyard was completely empty" at the time of the incident, he added."We reject the claims that were made by various officials immediately following the incident, that people were killed in the school premises as a result of (Israeli army) operational activity," Lerner said, according to AFP.Following Thursday’s incident, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which runs the school laid blame for the civilian deaths on the IDF, claiming it never received approval from the IDF for an evacuation from the facility.Multiple IDF sources later rejected UNRWA’s claims and characterized them as outright falsehoods.“For two days we were trying to move people out of that school in particular and the Beit Hanoun area in general,” said an IDF official who was involved in the interactions between the IDF, UNRWA, and International Red Cross (ICRC) leading up to the incident.An official IDF statement had said that “the IDF authorized a humanitarian time window for evacuation between 10:00-14:00 IDT earlier today. WASHINGTON - A highly popular conservative radio talk show in the United States has heaped praise on Canada's Harper government, while simultaneously blasting U.S. President Barack Obama and his administration.Its host delivered a gushing review of Canada's foreign policy to millions of listeners this week during a segment with Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, where they discussed the Harper government's position on the Gaza conflict.The Canadian minister received that hero's welcome on the Mark Levin show, whose audience size has been reported at somewhere between just under seven million and just over eight million people.Baird reiterated the government's views, saying: Israel has a duty to defend itself; Hamas is a terrorist organization; the conflict is with Hamas, not the Palestinian people; and there can be no moral equivalency in the face of terrorism, the great struggle of our generation.The host asked whether Baird also has to deal with media that treat both sides in the conflict equally, like they do in the U.S. The minister said that, indeed, the phenomenon also exists in Canada."There's a significant left-wing media bias, an anti-Israel bias, in a lot of the Canadian media," Baird said in the interview, which aired Thursday night."And you know what? GAZA, Palestine - Israel and Hamas launched new attacks Sunday in the raging Gaza war, despite going back and forth over proposals for a temporary halt to nearly three weeks of fighting ahead of a major Muslim holiday.The failure to reach even a brief humanitarian lull in the fighting illustrated the difficulties in securing a more permanent truce as the sides remain far apart on their terms.After initially rejecting an Israeli offer Saturday for a 24-hour truce, Hamas said Sunday that it had agreed to hold fire ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. But as Israel's Cabinet met to discuss the offer and the ongoing war, rockets rained down on southern Israel and Israeli strikes could be heard in Gaza.Each side blamed the other for scuttling the efforts.Hamas said that "due to the lack of commitment" by Israel, it resumed its fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Hamas showed it could not be trusted after it violated other cease-fire efforts."Israel is not obliged and is not going to let a terrorist organization decide when it's convenient to fire at our cities, at our people, and when it's not," Netanyahu said in satellite interviews from Israel carried on U.S. network Sunday news programs.In a phone call later Sunday, President Barack Obama told Netanyahu the United States is growing more concerned about the rising Palestinian death toll and the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza. He said a cousin and three other relatives were among dozens of people killed there last week."We can't feel any joy right now," he said when asked if he would mark the holiday.Meanwhile, the Israeli military acknowledged firing a mortar shell that hit the courtyard of a U.N. school in Gaza last week, but said the yard was empty at the time and that the shell could not have killed anyone.Palestinian officials have said three Israeli tank shells hit the school in the town of Beit Hanoun on Thursday, killing 16 people and wounding scores. It's time to stop!” Aat today's Angelus the Pope sent out an appeal for three crisis-stricken parts of the world: the Middle East, Iraq and Ukraine. “May God give the people and their leaders the wisdom and strength to carry along the path of peace with determination, resolving all disagreements with the tenacity of dialogue.” The Pope urged the world to “bear in mind the lessons of the past”, allowing “dialogue” and “peaceful reasoning” to prevail. With the centenary of the First World War just a day away, the Pope recalled the tragedy of the conflict. “I hope the mistakes of the past will not be repeated,” Francis said.“All is lost when there is war but nothing is lost when there is peace. No more war. I think above all of the children, whose hope and future are wrenched away from them; dead children, wounded children, orphaned children, children who play with remnants of the war and are not able to smile; please stop, I ask you this with all my heart.” The Pope underlined the importance of “not putting personal interests at the centre but the common good and respect for each individual.”“Let us remember,” Francis said speaking off the cuff, “that all is lost when there is war but nothing is lost when there is peace. No more war!” Meanwhile, Vatican Radio has published some excerpts from the Pope's discussion with the bishops of Caserta, the southern Italian city he visited yesterday: “Unity among bishops is important for the unity of the Church,” he said in one remark.“Some Church historians say that in some of the first Councils fist would fly but bishops eventually reached an agreement. It is bad news when bishops start gossiping about one another and form groups,” the Pope said. “This is not good because the unity of the Church is broken, when we bishops should act as an example of Church unity.” “We are so often a Church full of angry people: this brings sadness and bitterness and there is no joy.” When we meet a priest who is constantly angry and tense, we think this man must drink vinegar for breakfast, eat pickled vegetables at lunch and have a long tall lemonade at dinnertime,” teh Pope joked. “This kind of life is not good because it gives the image of an angry Church.” “Joy is the right way to go. Feeling angry is normal, it's ehalthy to feel angry now and again. But living in a constant state of anger is not what the Lord wants and it leads to sadness and division.” “What we need to do is to open up to people and say the right thing, with patience.”But the most striking reflection Francis shared with his audience today, was that about children in conflict areas being denied their childhood: “Let us remember taht all is lost when there is war but nothing is lost when there is peace. Brothers and sisters: no more war, no more war. I think above all of the children, whose hope of a respectable life and of a future are wrenched away from them; dead children, mutilated children, children who play with remnants of the war instead of toys please stop, I ask you this with all my heart, stop, please.”“Christians cannot keep their faith a secret because it permeates through every word and every gesture, even the simplest daily gestures: the love God gave us through Jesus comes through.” So “let us pray for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, that her Kingdom of love, justice and peace may live within us and in the entire world,2 he stressed. “The Gospel introduces you to the real Jesus, to the living Jesus; it speaks to your heart and changes your life. So leave everything. You can cnage your way of life or continue what you were doing before when you are someone else, you are reborn: you will have found what it is that gives meaning, taste and light to everything, even to hardship, suffering and death.” “Everything has a meaning, even sickness and death, when you find this treasure which Jesus calls the Kingdom of God, God reigns in your life,in our life, that is; Love, peace and joy reign in every person, in all people.”The Pope urged faithful to read the Gospel every day, to carry it in their pocket or keep it on their bedside table, because reading the Gospel is what brings us joy. Today Francis reflected on the parables of the treasure hidden in the field and the valuable pearl, which he defined as “two mini masterpieces”. “They show us that the discovery of God's Kingdom can happen all of a sudden, as it did in the farmer's case, when he unexpectedly discovered a treasure as he was ploughing the soil; or it can happen after a long time searching, as it did in the pearl mearchant's case. In both cases, the treasure and the pearl are worth more than any other possession. When the farmer and the merchant find their treasures they give up everything else in order to have them. They don't dither or reflect, they are immediately aware of the unequaled value of what they have discovered and are willing to lose everything in order to have it.”The same applies to the Kingdom of God,” the Pope said. “Those who find it have no doubts; they feel that it is what they were looking for, what they were waiting for and that it is the exact response to their deepest aspirations. And it really is like this: those who know Jesus, those who meet him in person are fascinated and drawn in by his goodness, all the truth, all the beauty all the humbleness and simplicity.” “So many people, so many saints have been so struck by Jesus when they have read the Gospel with an open heart, that they have converted to Him,” Francis observed quoting St. Francis of Assisi who “was a 'rose water' Christian”. “When he read the Gospel in a key moment of his youth, he found Jesus and discovered the Kingdom of God. And that was when all his dreams of earthly gloy vanished,” said Francis, the first ever Pope to name himself after the saint.
Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

Rockets were fired at several communities in the Gaza border area Monday morning and afternoon; Ashkelon was targeted as well. The IDF on Sunday confirmed firing a mortar round into a Gaza UN shelter where 15 people died on Thursday, but denied killing anyone at the site, according to AFP.Briefing journalists on the findings of an internal military enquiry into the incident at a UN school in Beit Hanoun, spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said that terrorists "in the vicinity" of the school fired mortar rounds and anti-tank rockets at Israeli forces.The army responded with mortar fire, sending a stray round into the compound."A single errant mortar (round) landed in the courtyard of the school," Lerner was quoted as having said."The courtyard was completely empty" at the time of the incident, he added."We reject the claims that were made by various officials immediately following the incident, that people were killed in the school premises as a result of (Israeli army) operational activity," Lerner said, according to AFP.Following Thursday’s incident, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which runs the school laid blame for the civilian deaths on the IDF, claiming it never received approval from the IDF for an evacuation from the facility.Multiple IDF sources later rejected UNRWA’s claims and characterized them as outright falsehoods.“For two days we were trying to move people out of that school in particular and the Beit Hanoun area in general,” said an IDF official who was involved in the interactions between the IDF, UNRWA, and International Red Cross (ICRC) leading up to the incident.An official IDF statement had said that “the IDF authorized a humanitarian time window for evacuation between 10:00-14:00 IDT earlier today. Hamas prevented the civilians from leaving it and once again used their infrastructure and international symbols as human shields. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Hamas showed it could not be trusted after it violated other cease-fire efforts."Israel is not obliged and is not going to let a terrorist organization decide when it's convenient to fire at our cities, at our people, and when it's not," Netanyahu said in satellite interviews from Israel carried on U.S. network Sunday news programs.In a phone call later Sunday, President Barack Obama told Netanyahu the United States is growing more concerned about the rising Palestinian death toll and the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The White House said Obama reiterated that Israel has a right to defend itself and condemned Hamas rocket attacks that have killed Israelis, but pushed for an immediate cease-fire.International diplomats had hoped a temporary lull could be expanded into a more sustainable truce to end the bloodshed and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon urged the sides on Sunday to accept a 24-hour break in fighting.However, both sides were holding out for bigger gains in the Gaza war.Hamas wants to break the seven-year blockade of Gaza and believes the only way to force serious negotiations on ending the closure is to keep fighting. Israel, which launched the war on July 8 to halt relentless Hamas rocket fire on its cities, wants more time to destroy Hamas' rocket arsenal and the military tunnels the Islamic militants use to infiltrate into Israel and smuggle weapons.The 20-day war has killed more than 1,030 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Israel has lost 43 soldiers, as well as two Israeli civilians and a Thai worker killed by rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza, the Israeli military said.Following Hamas' call for a break in fighting, an Israeli airstrike killed one person in Gaza when it hit a vehicle carrying municipal workers on their way to fix water pipes, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.Police said Israeli tanks fired shells on densely populated areas south of Gaza City. One shell hit an apartment building and several shells struck a building. Navy boats also resumed firing on Gaza's coast, police said. The Israeli military said it hit some 40 sites throughout Sunday.In southern Israel, one person was injured and a house was damaged by a rocket launched from Gaza, Israeli police said. The Israeli military said more than 50 rockets were fired Sunday.Ahead of the three-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which begins Monday, families in Gaza ordinarily would be busy with preparations, with children getting new clothes, shoes and haircuts, and families visiting each other.But business was slow in the outdoor market of the Jebaliya refugee camp, where vendors set up stands with clothes and shoes. Hamed Abul Atta, 22, a shoe salesman, said he hadn't made a single sale in the first three hours after opening.Abul Atta said he and his family were staying with relatives after fleeing the Shijaiyah district of Gaza City, which has seen heavy fighting. He said a cousin and three other relatives were among dozens of people killed there last week."We can't feel any joy right now," he said when asked if he would mark the holiday.Meanwhile, the Israeli military acknowledged firing a mortar shell that hit the courtyard of a U.N. school in Gaza last week, but said the yard was empty at the time and that the shell could not have killed anyone.Palestinian officials have said three Israeli tank shells hit the school in the town of Beit Hanoun on Thursday, killing 16 people and wounding scores. The school served as a shelter for Palestinians displaced by the Gaza fighting. At the time of the incident, witnesses said they were being urged to evacuate because of nearby clashes.Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesman, said Sunday that a military probe shows that "a single errant mortar landed," but that it is "extremely unlikely that anybody was killed as a result of this mortar."Thirty seconds of footage released by the military showed what it said was the empty courtyard and a blast, apparently from the mortar. It was impossible to determine exactly when the footage was filmed.Israel said it had warned people to leave the area for days ahead of time. It's time to stop!” Aat today's Angelus the Pope sent out an appeal for three crisis-stricken parts of the world: the Middle East, Iraq and Ukraine. “May God give the people and their leaders the wisdom and strength to carry along the path of peace with determination, resolving all disagreements with the tenacity of dialogue.” The Pope urged the world to “bear in mind the lessons of the past”, allowing “dialogue” and “peaceful reasoning” to prevail. With the centenary of the First World War just a day away, the Pope recalled the tragedy of the conflict. “I hope the mistakes of the past will not be repeated,” Francis said.“All is lost when there is war but nothing is lost when there is peace. No more war. I think above all of the children, whose hope and future are wrenched away from them; dead children, wounded children, orphaned children, children who play with remnants of the war and are not able to smile; please stop, I ask you this with all my heart.” The Pope underlined the importance of “not putting personal interests at the centre but the common good and respect for each individual.”“Let us remember,” Francis said speaking off the cuff, “that all is lost when there is war but nothing is lost when there is peace. Today Francis reflected on the parables of the treasure hidden in the field and the valuable pearl, which he defined as “two mini masterpieces”. “They show us that the discovery of God's Kingdom can happen all of a sudden, as it did in the farmer's case, when he unexpectedly discovered a treasure as he was ploughing the soil; or it can happen after a long time searching, as it did in the pearl mearchant's case. In both cases, the treasure and the pearl are worth more than any other possession. When the farmer and the merchant find their treasures they give up everything else in order to have them. They don't dither or reflect, they are immediately aware of the unequaled value of what they have discovered and are willing to lose everything in order to have it.”The same applies to the Kingdom of God,” the Pope said. “Those who find it have no doubts; they feel that it is what they were looking for, what they were waiting for and that it is the exact response to their deepest aspirations. And it really is like this: those who know Jesus, those who meet him in person are fascinated and drawn in by his goodness, all the truth, all the beauty all the humbleness and simplicity.” “So many people, so many saints have been so struck by Jesus when they have read the Gospel with an open heart, that they have converted to Him,” Francis observed quoting St. Francis of Assisi who “was a 'rose water' Christian”. “When he read the Gospel in a key moment of his youth, he found Jesus and discovered the Kingdom of God. And that was when all his dreams of earthly gloy vanished,” said Francis, the first ever Pope to name himself after the saint.
