Palestinian victims describe being used as shields by Hamas
Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. According to the victims, those who tried to object were shot in the legs by Hamas.

The Israeli Air Force has struck terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire this afternoon, following Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's order to strike back hard against the perpetrators.Sources in Gaza reported at least one IAF strike on an open area, which did not cause any injuries. It is possible the target was the site from where the rockets were launched, although this has not been confirmed.Palestinian sources say the Israeli airstrike response focused on the Gaza neighborhoods of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia. Giora Eiland on Tuesday criticized Israel's policy of retaliatory airstrikes to Hamas rocket attacks, instead proposing anotherl idea - responding to missiles by cutting off supplies.As terrorists in the Hamas enclave of Gaza renewed their rocket barrage on Tuesday afternoon in breach of the ceasefire, Eiland told Channel 2 that the current burst of terror does not necessarily mean Hamas wants to return to full combat.Rather, the general suggested that Hamas possibly intends to accompany the Cairo truce talks with rocket fire so as to strengthen its hand in the talks. Supporting this appraisal, Hamas spokesperson Moshir al-Masri hinted his group's possible responsibility for the rockets as a strategic ploy, saying shortly after the first salvo "if Israel wants calm, it must answer to the demands and rights of the Palestinians."Eiland criticized the current Israeli policy of responding to missile attacks with limited airstrikes on terror targets, a policy employed Tuesday after the initial salvo, and which he argued was ineffective.Instead of this tactic, Eiland offered a different stratagem - every time Gaza terrorists fire a rocket on Israel, according to the proposed policy, Israel would cut the transfer of supplies to the Hamas enclave."You don't give supplies to someone who is firing on you, that's an accepted fact between countries," noted Eiland.Even in the midst of Operation Protective Edge, Israel continued to transfer supplies to the Hamas stronghold. Members of a Gaza family whose farm was turned into a "fortress" by Hamas fighters have reported that they were helpless to stop Hamas from using them as human shields. They described how for years Hamas has used their property and homes as shields for military installations from which to launch rockets into Israel, dig tunnels and store arms. The Israeli Air Force has struck terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire this afternoon, following Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's order to strike back hard against the perpetrators.Sources in Gaza reported at least one IAF strike on an open area, which did not cause any injuries. It is possible the target was the site from where the rockets were launched, although this has not been confirmed.Palestinian sources say the Israeli airstrike response focused on the Gaza neighborhoods of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia. Reports from Gaza also claim strikes carried out adjacent to an UNRWA school in eastern Rafah, in the Al-Marazi "refugee camp" in central Gaza, and in Deir al-Balah and Al-Karara in southern Gaza.An IDF spokesman said: "The IDF was prepared for this possibility and is determined to protect the security of the residents of the State of Israel.Earlier Tuesday, at least three rockets were fired towards the southern Israeli city of Be'er Sheva, hours before the end of a 24-hour extension to a five-day truce declared last week."Yet again, terrorists breach the ceasefire and renew fire at Israeli civilians from Hamas ruled Gaza Strip," said army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner.Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri accused Israel of sabotaging indirect talks in Cairo aimed at brokering a longer-term ceasefire. The Institute for National Security Studies head Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland on Tuesday criticized Israel's policy of retaliatory airstrikes to Hamas rocket attacks, instead proposing anotherl idea - responding to missiles by cutting off supplies.As terrorists in the Hamas enclave of Gaza renewed their rocket barrage on Tuesday afternoon in breach of the ceasefire, Eiland told Channel 2 that the current burst of terror does not necessarily mean Hamas wants to return to full combat.Rather, the general suggested that Hamas possibly intends to accompany the Cairo truce talks with rocket fire so as to strengthen its hand in the talks. Supporting this appraisal, Hamas spokesperson Moshir al-Masri hinted his group's possible responsibility for the rockets as a strategic ploy, saying shortly after the first salvo "if Israel wants calm, it must answer to the demands and rights of the Palestinians."Eiland criticized the current Israeli policy of responding to missile attacks with limited airstrikes on terror targets, a policy employed Tuesday after the initial salvo, and which he argued was ineffective.Instead of this tactic, Eiland offered a different stratagem - every time Gaza terrorists fire a rocket on Israel, according to the proposed policy, Israel would cut the transfer of supplies to the Hamas enclave."You don't give supplies to someone who is firing on you, that's an accepted fact between countries," noted Eiland.Even in the midst of Operation Protective Edge, Israel continued to transfer supplies to the Hamas stronghold. It also continued supplying electricity needed to fire rockets, even though the PA, which buys electricity for Gaza, owes Israel 1.5 billion shekels ($525 million) in unpaid electric bills.The general reasoned "we need to stop separating Hamas from the civilian population in the (Gaza) Strip and understand that it's a country, and Hamas is the authentic representative of the population in Gaza."To cut supplies would not be a severe humanitarian breach, says Eiland, since Hamas always has the option to stop firing rockets."It's not that you're doing it unilaterally, you tell them 'stop firing and everything will be fine,'" said Eiland. "These (response) strikes in Gaza don't create deterrence, Hamas is already immune to them." Several out-of-the-box proposals have been advanced regarding Gaza, such as cutting electricity for a day after every rocket, as well as automatically firing back a randomly aimed rocket for every Gaza rocket.

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip collapsed on Tuesday, with Palestinian militants firing dozens of rockets at Israel and Israel launching air strikes that health officials said killed three people including a woman and a young girl in Gaza.Accusing Gaza Islamists of breaking the truce, Israel promptly recalled its negotiators from talks in Cairo, leaving the fate of Egyptian-brokered efforts to secure a lasting peace hanging in the balance.Rockets were fired from Gaza nearly eight hours before a ceasefire - extended by a day on Monday - was due to expire. Later dozens of rockets took aim at a number of cities and one missile hit open land in the greater Tel Aviv area, causing some damage but no casualties.Gaza witnesses said Israeli aircraft launched 35 attacks, including one on a house in Gaza City, where hospital officials said a woman and a two-year-old girl were killed. A third unidentified person also died in the strike, officials said.Israeli media said Israel had targeted a senior Hamas figure at the house that was bombed, possibly the head of a rocket launching operation. The army declined to comment on the bombing of that particular home in Gaza City, saying only that it had bombed 30 sites across Gaza on Tuesday.Gaza's dominant Islamist group Hamas said it fired at least 40 rockets at Israel after that deadly hit, targeting Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv area including Israel's Ben-Gurion International Airport. An Israeli security official said there was no disruption of activity at the airport.A police spokesman said a car was damaged in Tel Aviv and a rocket was intercepted in the Jerusalem area, where witnesses heard several explosions shortly after warning sirens sounded, and the military said one rocket struck inside an open area."Police have stepped up patrols in response to the wave of rocket fire," spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.Hamas's armed wing issued a statement after the rocket barrage accusing Israel of "violating the calm and committing a massacre ... the enemy has opened the gateway to hell." Suggesting that Israel expected more violence, the military instructed Israeli civilians to open bomb shelters as far as 80 km (50 miles) from Gaza, or beyond the Tel Aviv area.Israel's Channel 10 TV said those instructions may have been issued in anticipation of the retaliation that might follow were Israel to target a senior Hamas official. The station did not identify the official.Israelis living within a seven km (four mile) range were urged to sleep in safe rooms or shelters.Israeli media said municipalities in the Tel Aviv area were reopening shelters they had shut when fighting subsided two weeks ago.The violence also prompted a new exodus of dozens of Palestinian families who had fled previous fighting and had returned home only days ago.A Palestinian delegate in Cairo said negotiations for a durable ceasefire were near collapse. Hamas declared on Tuesday night that Israel had “opened the gates of hell”.In a statement, the group’s so-called “military wing” said that it had resumed the rocket fire on Israel because the Israeli Air Force had launched an airstrike on a home in Gaza.The group warned that “the price will be a heavy one”.Senior Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq warned, according to AFP, "Israel will not enjoy security so long as the Palestinian people do not, and it started it."While the latest truce between Israel and Hamas was set to end at midnight on Tuesday, Hamas violated it hours before it expired, firing rockets towards Be’er Sheva on Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 p.m.Heavy rocket fire hit southern and central Israel at around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.At least one rocket reportedly hit open ground in Tel Aviv; another five hit open land in Be'er Sheva. Another rocket was reportedly shot down over central Israel.Sirens were sounded in the Gush Dan region, the Shfela coastal plain, Ashdod, Be'er Sheva and various areas near Gaza.Sirens were heard shortly thereafter in the city of Beit Shemesh and in parts of Judea.Two rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system over Sderot. Two more rockets were intercepted over Be'er Sheva.Two more rockets exploded in the Eshkol region of southern Israel shortly after 11:30 p.m. They exploded in open areas, causing no physical injuries or damages.Shortly before midnight, Gaza terrorists also targeted Jerusalem, firing at least one rocket towards the region that was intercepted by the Iron Dome system.
