With the self-imposed deadline of November 24 looming over the negotiations between the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader and effective ruler, tweeted a graphic last week which outlined Iran’s 11 “Red Lines for Nuclear Talks.”These included a "red line" of retaining enough centrifuge capacity to produce approximately 38 uranium nuclear bombs per year. This is Red Line 8, which says: “Supplying the final need of the country’s enrichment capacity which is 190 SWUs.”Khamenei’s tweeted graphic included an inset that reads: “Ayatollah Khamenei, in line with his support for the Iranian negotiators... has called it necessary to observe the red lines in the course of the nuclear talks. In this infographic, some details of these red lines are reviewed in the Leader of the Revolution’s remarks.”The “Infographic” is as follows:Tweeted graphic-“SWU” is an acronym for a “Separative Work Unit” which is a measure by which nuclear centrifuge capacity is measured to enrich uranium. Nuclear centrifuges separate the heavier isotope of uranium U238 from its lighter cousin uranium isotope U235. Natural uranium has a high percentage of U238 and a low percentage of U235. Only enriched uranium that has a high percentage of the lighter U235 isotope is useable for a nuclear bomb.Now, in order to calculate how many uranium nuclear bombs’ worth of enriched uranium “190,000 SWUs” of centrifuge enrichment capacity could produce per year, one has to know two separate figures: first, the amount of kilograms of enriched uranium needed for a nuclear bomb, and second, how many SWUs are necessary to enrich the required number of kilograms of enriched uranium.Sources such as A. Q. Khan, the father of Pakistan’s atomic bomb, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, estimates the amount of highly enriched U235 necessary for an implosion-type uranium nuclear bomb to be 10kg-18kg, and for a simple gun-type bomb – about 40 kg.Also, the IAEA defines a “Significant Quantity” (SQ) of enriched uranium as “the approximate amount of nuclear material for which the possibility of manufacturing a nuclear explosive device cannot be excluded. Significant quantities take into account unavoidable losses due to conversion and manufacturing processes and should not be confused with critical masses. Significant quantities are used in establishing the quantity component of the IAEA inspection goal.”IAEA defines a “Significant Quantity,” or “SQ” of highly enriched Uranium to be 25 kg.So, for purposes of the “SWU/bombs per year” calculation, the IAEA “Significant Quantity” estimate of 25 kg of 90% U235 / 10% U238 uranium is a good basic number of kilograms of enriched uranium needed for one uranium nuclear bomb.The scientific “MrReid.org” website has generated a SWU graph which easily calculates the amount of SWUs needed to produce a given enrichment percentage level of U235-enriched uranium to a specific kilogram amount of the enriched level of uranium.The “Mr. Reid-SWU” chart states that 3,831 SWUs are necessary for 20 kg of 90% U235 enriched uranium, if one starts from scratch with unenriched uranium. So, approximating and rounding up for 25 kilograms of 90% U235, the number of SWUs necessary is about 5,000 SWUs.Since Khamenei stated that Iran needs at least 190,000 SWUs, that means he is demanding that Iran needs enough nuclear centrifuge capacity to enrich 38 uranium nuclear bombs per year (190,000 SWUs per year / 5,000 SWUs necessary to produce one nuclear bomb). This amount of centrifuge capacity demanded by Iran will surely meet opposition from Israel, which has demanded Iran be barred from any centrifuge capacity whatsoever.Recently, at the UN General Assembly, PM Netanyahu explained that many countries that use civilian nuclear power have no need for any centrifuge capacity, because outside countries enrich the fuel necessary for their civilian nuclear power plants.

In the wake of the reported massive explosion at Iran’s secret nuclear facility at Parchin on Sunday, it was reported by USAToday that Iran has admitted it had “tested ‘exploding bridge wires’” at Parchin, and “not neutron initiators.”Just last Friday, Arutz Sheva published an article explaining how the IAEA in November 2011 reported that it had received “highly credible” information that Iran had tested “neutron initiators" at the site, and that Iran had told it that it had exploding bridge wire technology.The same November 2011 IAEA report also reported that Iran had tested exploding bridge wires. Exploding bridge wires act to simultaneously trigger the conventional explosives components of a nuclear bomb, so as to create the right condition for the nuclear core to fully detonate in a nuclear reaction.In specific, the IAEA November 2011 Annex stated that "among the alleged studies documentation are a number of documents relating to the development by Iran, during the period 2002–2003, of fast functioning detonators, known as 'exploding bridgewire detonators' or 'EBWs.'"It added that in 2008, Iran told the IAEA that "before the period 2002–2004, it had already achieved EBW technology. Iran also provided the Agency with a short undated document in Farsi, understood to be the specifications for a detonator development program, and a document from a foreign source showing an example of a civilian application in which detonators are fired simultaneously. With the self-imposed deadline of November 24 looming over the negotiations between the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader and effective ruler, tweeted a graphic last week which outlined Iran’s 11 “Red Lines for Nuclear Talks.”These included a "red line" of retaining enough centrifuge capacity to produce approximately 38 uranium nuclear bombs per year. This is Red Line 8, which says: “Supplying the final need of the country’s enrichment capacity which is 190 SWUs.”Khamenei’s tweeted graphic included an inset that reads: “Ayatollah Khamenei, in line with his support for the Iranian negotiators... has called it necessary to observe the red lines in the course of the nuclear talks. In this infographic, some details of these red lines are reviewed in the Leader of the Revolution’s remarks.”The “Infographic” is as follows:Tweeted graphic-“SWU” is an acronym for a “Separative Work Unit” which is a measure by which nuclear centrifuge capacity is measured to enrich uranium. Nuclear centrifuges separate the heavier isotope of uranium U238 from its lighter cousin uranium isotope U235. Natural uranium has a high percentage of U238 and a low percentage of U235. Only enriched uranium that has a high percentage of the lighter U235 isotope is useable for a nuclear bomb.Now, in order to calculate how many uranium nuclear bombs’ worth of enriched uranium “190,000 SWUs” of centrifuge enrichment capacity could produce per year, one has to know two separate figures: first, the amount of kilograms of enriched uranium needed for a nuclear bomb, and second, how many SWUs are necessary to enrich the required number of kilograms of enriched uranium.Sources such as A. Q. Khan, the father of Pakistan’s atomic bomb, and the Union of Concerned Scientists, estimates the amount of highly enriched U235 necessary for an implosion-type uranium nuclear bomb to be 10kg-18kg, and for a simple gun-type bomb – about 40 kg.Also, the IAEA defines a “Significant Quantity” (SQ) of enriched uranium as “the approximate amount of nuclear material for which the possibility of manufacturing a nuclear explosive device cannot be excluded. Significant quantities take into account unavoidable losses due to conversion and manufacturing processes and should not be confused with critical masses. Significant quantities are used in establishing the quantity component of the IAEA inspection goal.”IAEA defines a “Significant Quantity,” or “SQ” of highly enriched Uranium to be 25 kg.So, for purposes of the “SWU/bombs per year” calculation, the IAEA “Significant Quantity” estimate of 25 kg of 90% U235 / 10% U238 uranium is a good basic number of kilograms of enriched uranium needed for one uranium nuclear bomb.The scientific “MrReid.org” website has generated a SWU graph which easily calculates the amount of SWUs needed to produce a given enrichment percentage level of U235-enriched uranium to a specific kilogram amount of the enriched level of uranium.The “Mr. Reid-SWU” chart states that 3,831 SWUs are necessary for 20 kg of 90% U235 enriched uranium, if one starts from scratch with unenriched uranium. So, approximating and rounding up for 25 kilograms of 90% U235, the number of SWUs necessary is about 5,000 SWUs.Since Khamenei stated that Iran needs at least 190,000 SWUs, that means he is demanding that Iran needs enough nuclear centrifuge capacity to enrich 38 uranium nuclear bombs per year (190,000 SWUs per year / 5,000 SWUs necessary to produce one nuclear bomb). This amount of centrifuge capacity demanded by Iran will surely meet opposition from Israel, which has demanded Iran be barred from any centrifuge capacity whatsoever.Recently, at the UN General Assembly, PM Netanyahu explained that many countries that use civilian nuclear power have no need for any centrifuge capacity, because outside countries enrich the fuel necessary for their civilian nuclear power plants.

In the wake of the reported massive explosion at Iran’s secret nuclear facility at Parchin on Sunday, it was reported by USAToday that Iran has admitted it had “tested ‘exploding bridge wires’” at Parchin, and “not neutron initiators.”Just last Friday, Arutz Sheva published an article explaining how the IAEA in November 2011 reported that it had received “highly credible” information that Iran had tested “neutron initiators" at the site, and that Iran had told it that it had exploding bridge wire technology.The same November 2011 IAEA report also reported that Iran had tested exploding bridge wires. Exploding bridge wires act to simultaneously trigger the conventional explosives components of a nuclear bomb, so as to create the right condition for the nuclear core to fully detonate in a nuclear reaction.In specific, the IAEA November 2011 Annex stated that "among the alleged studies documentation are a number of documents relating to the development by Iran, during the period 2002–2003, of fast functioning detonators, known as 'exploding bridgewire detonators' or 'EBWs.'"It added that in 2008, Iran told the IAEA that "before the period 2002–2004, it had already achieved EBW technology. Iran also provided the Agency with a short undated document in Farsi, understood to be the specifications for a detonator development program, and a document from a foreign source showing an example of a civilian application in which detonators are fired simultaneously. However, Iran has not explained to the Agency its own need or application for such detonators.""Given their [EBWs’] possible application in a nuclear explosive device, and the fact that there are limited civilian and conventional military applications for such technology, Iran’s development of such detonators and equipment is a matter of concern," warned the IAEA document.As recently as September 5, the IAEA reiterated that Iran is still trying to explain its civilian, non-nuclear-weapon, "need" for explosive bridge wires.The graphics below illustrate how the explosive bridge wires simultaneously detonate the conventional explosives placed around the spherical implosion-type nuclear bomb so as to create a symmetric inward detonation wave to ensure uniform compression. In this way, a uranium or plutonium fissile nuclear weapons’ core can be compressed and pressured enough to reach “supercritical density” and set off a proper and efficient nuclear chain reaction.Such an implosion bomb was estimated by A.Q. Khan, father of the Pakistani nuclear-bomb, to be able to achieve a 20-21 kiloton yield equivalent to the plutonium implosion bomb code-named “Fat Man” that was dropped on Nagasaki August 9, 1945, and killed an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 people outright.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urged Palestinian Arabs on Wednesday to keep fighting Israel, according to AFP."The only way to deal with this savage regime is to continue resistance and armed struggle and extend it to the West Bank (Judea and Samaria -ed.)," the official IRNA news agency quoted Khamenei as saying.Iran, which does not recognize Israel, is a supporter of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups that have been at the forefront of the fighting in Gaza.Khamenei and other Iranian leaders have been for years attacking Israel and calling for its elimination.In November, Khamenei said that Israel is a "regime doomed to collapse" and referred to the Jewish state as "the rabid dog of the region".Several weeks before that, he called Israel an "illegitimate and bastard regime," and further called the United States a "smiling enemy" that is not to be trusted.Khamenei has also denied the Holocaust, saying in March, "In European countries, no one dares to talk about the Holocaust, and we do not know if it's real or not."In May, he accused the Israeli government of being “wicked terrorists” in a series of tweets.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, thinks the United States, Israel and the "wicked" British government are behind the Islamic State (IS or ISIS) terrorist group, Al-Akhbar reports.According to the report, Khamenei’s comments were made Monday, in his first speech since undergoing prostate surgery last month."America, Zionism, and especially the veteran expert of spreading divisions – the wicked government of Britain – have sharply increased their efforts of creating divisions between the Sunnis and Shias," he said, according to his website, in a speech marking a Shiite Muslim religious holiday."They created Al-Qaeda and Da'esh (the Arabic acronym for ISIS -ed.) in order to create divisions and use them to fight against the Islamic Republic, but today, they have turned on them (ISIS)," Khamenei charged.The United States along with several Arab monarchies began a campaign of airstrikes against ISIS in Syria on September 23. The airstrikes have not been effective so far.Other Western countries, including Britain, have also taken part in bombing raids against ISIS positions in Iraq.Khamenei's accusation appeared to be a reference to Western support for the so-called rebel forces fighting the Syrian army and government."A careful and analytic look at the developments reveals that the U.S. and its allies, in efforts that are falsely termed countering Da’esh, seek to create division and enmity among the Muslims rather to destroy the root causes of that (terrorist) current," Khamenei claimed, according to Al-Akhbar."Shias and Sunnis must know that any action or remark, including insulting one another, leads to increased sensitivities and ignite flames. This will certainly benefit the common enemy of all Muslims," he added.Last month, Khamenei said his country had rejected a U.S. request for cooperation against ISIS because Washington has “dirty hands”.A day later, the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards said he is doubtful that the real objective of the United States against ISIS is to eliminate the group.
