A 17-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah was arrested late Wednesday night at HaParsa Junction, near Dolev in Binyamin, on suspicion of planning to stab a bus driver in Jerusalem.Police officers from Modi'in Illit patrolling in the area noticed the suspect and stopped him to search his bag, where they found a large knife and a screwdriver.After a brief interrogation, the boy admitted he intended to hitchhike to Jerusalem to stab a a bus driver. He was transferred to the Israel Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet) for further questioning.In a similar incident Wednesday night, a Palestinian in his 20s was arrested and taken in for questioning, after police found a knife on his person.At the entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron, Border Patrol forces stopped the young man who had aroused suspicions. Upon inspection they found a commando knife under his shirt.Upon noticing the man walking "suspiciously" near the holy site, a security source said: "We asked him to lift up his shirt when he was a few feet away. As soon as he did so, we saw a commando knife on his waist." When Border Patrol forces saw the knife on the body of the suspect, they cocked their weapons at him. The suspect panicked and threw the knife on the floor. Soldiers conducted a thorough search of his body, and eventually the suspect was arrested.Despite attempts to communicate while the suspect was on the ground, he had apparently drank alcohol shortly before and was unable to cooperate with law enforcement.The suspect was then brought to the Hevron police precinct for further interrogation."The forces showed vigilance, ending the incident quickly and professionally," said Amal Ghanam, acting company commander at the Cave of the Patriarchs. "Experience has taught us that in this area we must be alert and ready for any scenario at all times. There is no room for hesitation and no room for error.""We will continue to pursue our important mission: maintaining the safety and the lives of citizens and of worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarchs," Ghanam concluded.

Arab support for the jihadist Islamic State (also known as ISIS) is highest among Palestinian Arabs, according to a recent survey.A poll carried out by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha gauged opinion on the Arab street regarding the current US-led campaign to "rollback" and ultimately defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. 5,100 respondents from seven Arab countries (Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, "Palestine", as well as Syrian Arabs in Turkish refugee camps) were asked about their views both of the operation and of ISIS itself.The results showed that a full 85% of Arabs hold a view of ISIS that is either "Negative" or "Negative to some extent," whereas just 11% saw them as "Positive" or "Positive to some extent."Regarding the anti-ISIS campaign, despite the deep unpopularity of many of the Arab regimes taking part, a full 59% were supportive of Arab participation in the campaign. Several gulf states as well as Jordan have contributed towards the US-led air campaign.However, only 22% were fully confident that the mission would succeed, while a mere 3% believed their countries would benefit from the campaign in the end - with the majority saying other actors (the United States, Israel, Iran and the Syrian regime) would ultimately benefit the most.Poll results did however vary depending on the country. For example, Egyptian respondents polled far below average in unqualified support for the US-led campaign. While an average of 26% of respondents said they "Strongly Support" the operation, just 6% of Egyptians held that view - although the number who "Support" the operation less adamantly was higher (46%) than the average of 33%.That may reflect the fact that, while Egyptians are just as hostile in general towards ISIS, trust for the US itself is also extremely low following the Obama administration's handling of the events in the country since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.Unsurprisingly, Lebanese respondents were the most supportive of the anti-ISIS operation and the most hostile towards ISIS itself.The majority of Lebanese citizens are either Shia Muslim, Christian or Druze - groups which the Sunni Islamist ISIS views as infidels. In addition, many Sunni Muslims in Lebanon are relatively secular, granting them similar status in the eyes of the jihadists. Hence, a full 76% support the anti-ISIS operation, with the lion's share (68%) "strongly" supporting it. In contrast, 98% had an unqualified "Negative" view of ISIS, and no Lebanese respondents viewed ISIS in a positive light at all (1% viewed them as "Negative to some extent," while a further 1% did not answer.) Of course, some support for ISIS clearly does exist within Lebanon, as recent clashes and attacks involving radical Sunni Muslim elements attest to. What the poll does illustrate however is the fact that, regardless of sectarian rivalry and hatred, even most Sunni Muslims there are fearful both of the brutal puritanism of ISIS as well as its implications for the delicate social fabric of their country - where memories of bloody civil war are still vivid.The Arab group with the highest level of support for ISIS were Palestinians, with nearly a quarter (24%) of Palestinians polled viewed ISIS in a positive light.4% of Palestinians viewed ISIS as purely "Positive," in line with the average response rate of other Arab groups - only Saudi Arabia (5%) and Tunisia (7%) had higher percentages in that category. However, a full 20% viewed ISIS as "Positive to some extent" - well over the overall average of 7%. Additionally, even those Palestinians with negative views of ISIS were more ambivalent than other Arabs; just 36% held a wholly negative view of ISIS (compared to an average of 72%), and a further 36% were only "Negative to some extent" (compared to just 13% overall).The results contradict Palestinian Authority claims that Palestinian Muslims are far more "moderate" than Muslims elsewhere.

Almost 40% of the Jewish population in Israel believes in changing government policy surrounding Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount - even at the cost of bloodshed, according to a survey by the "Peace Index" published Monday by the Guttman Center at the Israel Democracy Institute and the Evens Program for Solution Conflict Resolution at Tel Aviv University.Despite this, 56% of respondents still believe in restricting Jews from praying on the Mount to "prevent friction with the Muslim world." In the same vein, nearly half (47%) support the ruling of the majority of hareidi and national-religious rabbus that Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount is forbidden, but about a quarter (26%) support the ruling of those rabbis who permit Jews to pray on the Temple Mount today.Segmentation by religiosity of respondents indicated that among traditional-religious, religious and traditional non-religious were the most supportive of changing the "status quo" regarding the Temple Mount, (respectively 49%, 46.5% and 44%), whereas among the secular and hareidi respondents, support was far lower (34% and 17%). Specifically, 96% of hareidi respondents were against contesting the rabbinic rulings forbidding prayer on the Temple Mount, compared with 60% among the national-religious. However, 33% of the secular respondents declined to answer this set of questions. Respondents were further asked whether or not they believe an agreement could be reached with the Muslim Waqf regarding the Temple Mount.The survey found that less than one third of Israeli Jews (31%) believe there is now a chance to reach an agreement that will allow members of both faiths to pray there, while the majority think there is a chance for an agreement - whether due to the Muslims who support such a ruling (30%), because of Israeli Jews (4%), or because of both combined (29%).The survey was conducted by telephone by the research institute Midgam, from November 3-5, 2014. A total of 603 respondents answered questions, constituting a representative national sample of the entire adult population aged 18 and over. A 17-year-old Palestinian from Ramallah was arrested late Wednesday night at HaParsa Junction, near Dolev in Binyamin, on suspicion of planning to stab a bus driver in Jerusalem.Police officers from Modi'in Illit patrolling in the area noticed the suspect and stopped him to search his bag, where they found a large knife and a screwdriver.After a brief interrogation, the boy admitted he intended to hitchhike to Jerusalem to stab a a bus driver. He was transferred to the Israel Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet) for further questioning.In a similar incident Wednesday night, a Palestinian in his 20s was arrested and taken in for questioning, after police found a knife on his person.At the entrance to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron, Border Patrol forces stopped the young man who had aroused suspicions. Upon inspection they found a commando knife under his shirt.Upon noticing the man walking "suspiciously" near the holy site, a security source said: "We asked him to lift up his shirt when he was a few feet away. As soon as he did so, we saw a commando knife on his waist." When Border Patrol forces saw the knife on the body of the suspect, they cocked their weapons at him. The suspect panicked and threw the knife on the floor. Soldiers conducted a thorough search of his body, and eventually the suspect was arrested.Despite attempts to communicate while the suspect was on the ground, he had apparently drank alcohol shortly before and was unable to cooperate with law enforcement.The suspect was then brought to the Hevron police precinct for further interrogation."The forces showed vigilance, ending the incident quickly and professionally," said Amal Ghanam, acting company commander at the Cave of the Patriarchs. "Experience has taught us that in this area we must be alert and ready for any scenario at all times. There is no room for hesitation and no room for error.""We will continue to pursue our important mission: maintaining the safety and the lives of citizens and of worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarchs," Ghanam concluded.

Arab support for the jihadist Islamic State (also known as ISIS) is highest among Palestinian Arabs, according to a recent survey.A poll carried out by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha gauged opinion on the Arab street regarding the current US-led campaign to "rollback" and ultimately defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. 5,100 respondents from seven Arab countries (Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, "Palestine", as well as Syrian Arabs in Turkish refugee camps) were asked about their views both of the operation and of ISIS itself.The results showed that a full 85% of Arabs hold a view of ISIS that is either "Negative" or "Negative to some extent," whereas just 11% saw them as "Positive" or "Positive to some extent."Regarding the anti-ISIS campaign, despite the deep unpopularity of many of the Arab regimes taking part, a full 59% were supportive of Arab participation in the campaign. Several gulf states as well as Jordan have contributed towards the US-led air campaign.However, only 22% were fully confident that the mission would succeed, while a mere 3% believed their countries would benefit from the campaign in the end - with the majority saying other actors (the United States, Israel, Iran and the Syrian regime) would ultimately benefit the most.Poll results did however vary depending on the country. For example, Egyptian respondents polled far below average in unqualified support for the US-led campaign. While an average of 26% of respondents said they "Strongly Support" the operation, just 6% of Egyptians held that view - although the number who "Support" the operation less adamantly was higher (46%) than the average of 33%.That may reflect the fact that, while Egyptians are just as hostile in general towards ISIS, trust for the US itself is also extremely low following the Obama administration's handling of the events in the country since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.Unsurprisingly, Lebanese respondents were the most supportive of the anti-ISIS operation and the most hostile towards ISIS itself.The majority of Lebanese citizens are either Shia Muslim, Christian or Druze - groups which the Sunni Islamist ISIS views as infidels. In addition, many Sunni Muslims in Lebanon are relatively secular, granting them similar status in the eyes of the jihadists. Hence, a full 76% support the anti-ISIS operation, with the lion's share (68%) "strongly" supporting it. In contrast, 98% had an unqualified "Negative" view of ISIS, and no Lebanese respondents viewed ISIS in a positive light at all (1% viewed them as "Negative to some extent," while a further 1% did not answer.) Of course, some support for ISIS clearly does exist within Lebanon, as recent clashes and attacks involving radical Sunni Muslim elements attest to. What the poll does illustrate however is the fact that, regardless of sectarian rivalry and hatred, even most Sunni Muslims there are fearful both of the brutal puritanism of ISIS as well as its implications for the delicate social fabric of their country - where memories of bloody civil war are still vivid.The Arab group with the highest level of support for ISIS were Palestinians, with nearly a quarter (24%) of Palestinians polled viewed ISIS in a positive light.4% of Palestinians viewed ISIS as purely "Positive," in line with the average response rate of other Arab groups - only Saudi Arabia (5%) and Tunisia (7%) had higher percentages in that category. However, a full 20% viewed ISIS as "Positive to some extent" - well over the overall average of 7%. Additionally, even those Palestinians with negative views of ISIS were more ambivalent than other Arabs; just 36% held a wholly negative view of ISIS (compared to an average of 72%), and a further 36% were only "Negative to some extent" (compared to just 13% overall).The results contradict Palestinian Authority claims that Palestinian Muslims are far more "moderate" than Muslims elsewhere.

Almost 40% of the Jewish population in Israel believes in changing government policy surrounding Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount - even at the cost of bloodshed, according to a survey by the "Peace Index" published Monday by the Guttman Center at the Israel Democracy Institute and the Evens Program for Solution Conflict Resolution at Tel Aviv University.Despite this, 56% of respondents still believe in restricting Jews from praying on the Mount to "prevent friction with the Muslim world." In the same vein, nearly half (47%) support the ruling of the majority of hareidi and national-religious rabbus that Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount is forbidden, but about a quarter (26%) support the ruling of those rabbis who permit Jews to pray on the Temple Mount today.Segmentation by religiosity of respondents indicated that among traditional-religious, religious and traditional non-religious were the most supportive of changing the "status quo" regarding the Temple Mount, (respectively 49%, 46.5% and 44%), whereas among the secular and hareidi respondents, support was far lower (34% and 17%). Specifically, 96% of hareidi respondents were against contesting the rabbinic rulings forbidding prayer on the Temple Mount, compared with 60% among the national-religious. However, 33% of the secular respondents declined to answer this set of questions. Respondents were further asked whether or not they believe an agreement could be reached with the Muslim Waqf regarding the Temple Mount.The survey found that less than one third of Israeli Jews (31%) believe there is now a chance to reach an agreement that will allow members of both faiths to pray there, while the majority think there is a chance for an agreement - whether due to the Muslims who support such a ruling (30%), because of Israeli Jews (4%), or because of both combined (29%).The survey was conducted by telephone by the research institute Midgam, from November 3-5, 2014. A total of 603 respondents answered questions, constituting a representative national sample of the entire adult population aged 18 and over. Yaakov Wieder, a member of the Likud presidium who chairs the party's hareidi-religious task force, warned that if police and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) do not take responsibility for harsh incitement against hareidi soldiers, the result could be murders.Wieder stressed: "There is a phenomenon of extremists raising their heads and stirring the streets against these hareidi soldiers.""For over a year there has been incitement in hareidi communities. Hareidi soldiers are presented as forbidden animals, wild animals and bacteria. We are also witnessing acts of violence, yet to this day police have not taken care of it.According to Wieder, if the incitement was against Arabs, ISA would have already entered the picture, "We're talking about a campaign sponsored by the Ministry of Publication - if it said anything against Arabs, the entire country would be in an uproar.""Here you see, every Shabbat, new hideous drawings on bulletin boards portraying soldiers as pigs and bacteria," Wieder lamented."Some hareidi communities' incitement leads directly to violence against the soldiers. Soldiers are afraid to return home [in uniform], but unfortunately nobody has done anything [to address this problem]."Hareidi extremists oppose enlistment into the IDF, and such campaigns are aimed at intimidating community members considering doing so and discouraging others. In some cases, hareidi soldiers have even been physically assaulted by extremists - many are forced to change out of their uniforms on base before returning home for fear of reprisals.Despite hareidi IDF recruitment being on the rise in 2014 - or perhaps because of it, a renewed and intense public campaign has been launched in hareidi neighborhoods against recruitment into the Israeli army.The campaign is accompanied by posters with various slogans, some of them quite blatantly violent.Recently, Arutz Sheva exposed a particularly shocking campaign in which hareidi soldiers were literally portrayed as pigs - just a month or so after dozens gave their lives in Operation Protective Edge. The offensive cartoon was even gleefully shared by Hamas.

The Almagor terror victims’ organization on Tuesday called on Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein and Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch to take legal and administrative measures against arch- terrorist Marwan Barghouti, following his letter in which he called for “armed resistance” against Israel.In the letter to mark 10 years since the death of PLO leader Yasser Arafat, Barghouti said that "choosing global and armed resistance" was being "faithful to Arafat's legacy, to his ideas and his principles for which tens of thousands died as martyrs.""It is imperative to reconsider our choice of resistance as a way of defeating the occupier," he wrote.Responding to the letter, Almagor said that after being sentenced to six life sentences for murdering Israelis in terrorist attacks, Israel must make clear that Barghouti is not immune from further punishment and the imposition of additional penalties."As an immediate measure, he should be isolated from any contact with outside visits and any contact with other prisoners, so that he is blocked from issuing inciting letters from prison,” the organization said.Barghouti, who is widely believed to have masterminded the second intifada, which exploded across Israel from 2000 to 2005, wrote the letter from his cell in Israel's Hadarim prison.Barghouti is widely perceived as a popular choice to replace Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, whose term in office expired several years ago.From his jail cell, he has threatened Israel in the past with a third intifada, albeit an unarmed one, and has declared he “would not give up and I claim that the right of return is a sacred right of the Palestinians.”He recently accused the PA of neglecting the issue of terrorist releases and called for all Palestinian Arab terrorist groups to put his release on the top of the agenda.

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas is to meet Washington's top diplomat to discuss the upsurge in violence in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, his spokesman told AFP on Wednesday.The meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry will take place in the Jordanian capital at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) on Thursday, Nabil Abu Rudeina said.Kerry was due to arrive in Jordan later on Wednesday and have a private dinner King Abdullah II, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, at which the two men will discuss the simmering tensions in Jerusalem and other regional issues.She confirmed Kerry was to also meet with Abbas, saying it was "the most likely option" that their talks would be on Thursday.So far no meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has been scheduled although Kerry speaks with him "probably almost every day and he'll continue to do that."Kerry's arrival comes as Israel continues to combat a wave of violence which has gripped Jerusalem for the past four months and has spread to Judea and Samaria, as well as to some Arab towns in northern Israel.Much of the tension has been focused on the Temple Mount, Judaism's holiest site, which has seen numerous clashes instigated by Islamist factions, as Jewish groups continue to campaign for the right to pray there."The Palestinian position will be made crystal clear: the Israeli violations are a red line and cannot be tolerated - especially with the tension and Israeli escalation in Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem," Abu Rudeina said.Clashes at the holy site have drawn sharp criticism from both the Palestinians and Jordan, whose government-run Waqf Islamic trust has custodial rights at the site. Israel has repeatedly pledged it has no plans to alter the decades-old "status quo".Abbas will also tell Kerry that the PA will not be deterred from plans to present a draft resolution to the UN Security Council this month, seeking to set an end date for "Israeli occupation," he said."President Abbas will also affirm... that the Palestinian side is going to the Security Council this month to call for an end date for Israeli occupation because the situation has become explosive and it cannot wait," he said.Kerry had also been scheduled to go to the United Arab Emirates, but that visit has been canceled, Psaki said without elaborating.
