PA Toughens Language in Unilateral UN Resolution-Palestinian Authority presents a more toughly-worded UN draft resolution on statehood, but a date on the vote is yet to be determined.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 12/30/2014, 12:13 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The Palestinian Authority’s envoys presented on Monday a more toughly-worded United Nations (UN) draft resolution on statehood that could come up for a vote at the Security Council this week, AFP reports.Arab ambassadors met at UN headquarters for about two hours to endorse the text that contains new provisions on declaring eastern Jerusalem the capital of a Palestinian state, settling the issue of prisoner releases and halting Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. But a final decision on the timing for a vote on the draft resolution at the Security Council rests with PA and Jordanian leaders."Both our leaderships will be discussing, to find the best way and the best timing to vote on the Security Council resolution," Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar was quoted as having told reporters."Realistically, it could happen tomorrow," added PA envoy Riyad Mansour. The draft resolution was formally presented to the council on December 17, but the United States quickly rejected the text over Palestinian insistence that deadlines be set.The PA said it was open to negotiations on the text and Jordan began talks on a measure that could garner a consensus among the 15 council members. But the latest push showed that prospects for a resolution that would satisfy both the PA and the United States were bleak.Discussions on the draft resolution come amid mounting international alarm over the ongoing violence and the failure to re-start negotiations. It remains unclear if the PA would seek a quick vote or hold off until January 1 when five new members with a pro-Palestinian stance join  the Security Council.Diplomats said it was unlikely that the resolution would garner nine votes under the current makeup of the council -- a scenario that would allow the United States to avoid resorting to its veto power.Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela begin their two-year stint at the council on January 1, replacing Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, Rwanda and South Korea.Russia has said it will support the resolution, and while U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has not publicly stated that Washington would use its veto against the resolution, his spokeswoman recently said the United States will not support the resolution.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday called on the international community to oppose the PA’s moves at the UN."We expect the international community, at least the responsible members of that community to oppose vigorously this UN diktat, this UN Security Council resolution because what we need always is direct negotiations and not imposed conditions," Netanyahu said during a meeting with Indiana Governor Mike Pence."But I want to guarantee you, to you and to the people of Israel: If the international community does not reject the Palestinian Authority's proposal, we will. Israel will oppose conditions that endanger our future," he added.

PA, Arab Council Weigh Deadline for UN Draft Resolution-Reports differing on when the draft will be presented to the UN, as Jordan vows to push ahead - despite PA hesitancy.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 12/29/2014, 8:29 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Palestinian Authority (PA) envoys are pressing on with changes to a draft UN resolution on statehood Monday, meeting with Arab countries to decide when the text should be put to a vote at the Security Council, according to AFP.Security Council member Jordan called the meeting of the Arab Group at the United Nations to discuss the new draft that lays out a time frame to reach a final peace deal with Israel."We want to discuss with the Arab Group the amendments that the Palestinians are proposing to the resolution ... and to see when is a good time to pass to a vote," Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar told reporters. The draft resolution was formally presented to the council less than two weeks ago but the United States said it would not support the text. The resolution sets a 12-month deadline to wrap up negotiations on a final settlement and calls for Israel to complete a withdrawal from Judea-Samaria by the end of 2017. The deal would pave the way for the creation of a Palestinian state with Israel sharing Jerusalem as its capital, according to the text.Arab ambassadors were to decide on whether to seek a vote at the Security Council this week, possibly as early as Tuesday, Jordanian and Palestinian diplomats said. But with five new members who have a pro-Palestinian stance joining the Security Council on January 1, the ambassadors may decide to hold off on a vote until next month.Israel has strongly opposed the text, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stated earlier Monday that it jeopardizes Israel's existence."Israel and our civilization is under attack," Netanyahu stated. "The attacks come from Iran; the attacks come from the various Islamists. The attack is now coming on Israel from the Palestinian Authority seeking to impose on us a diktat that would undermine Israel's security, and put its future in peril."

Netanyahu Calls on States to Oppose PA's 'Diktats' at the UN-Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says PA statehood bid 'puts Israel's future in peril' in meeting with Indiana governor.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 12/29/2014, 6:08 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with Indiana Governor Mike Pence on Monday, noting at the beginning of the meeting that Israel is "under attack" by Islamists and that Israel will reject a bid for Palestinian statehood."Israel and our civilization is under attack," Netanyahu stated. "The attacks come from Iran; the attacks come from the various Islamists. The attack is now coming on Israel from the Palestinian Authority seeking to impose on us a diktat that would undermine Israel's security, put its future in peril.""We expect the international community, at least the responsible members of that community to oppose vigorously this UN diktat, this UN Security Council resolution because what we need always is direct negotiations and not imposed conditions," he continued. "But I want to guarantee you, to you and to the people of Israel: If the international community does not reject the Palestinian Authority's proposal, we will. Israel will oppose conditions that endanger our future."Netanyahu's words reiterate Israel's opposition to a PA statehood bid being circulated throughout the UN, which calls for Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria by 2017 to establish 'Palestine.' Pence is in Israel for a Christmas vacation trip, where he is meeting with several government authorities and local leaders as well in an effort to expand the economic cooperation between Indiana and the Jewish state. The governor made headlines Sunday for rejecting an offer to have Christmas dinner with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, after Abbas approached him last week with the offer to have a car bring him to a "unscheduled and unsolicited meeting."Pence has stressed on multiple occasions that he supports Israel, making remarks to the Christian Broadcasting Network condemning current US President Barack Obama's policy on Israel and Jerusalem in 2010.But despite this, Pence stated Monday at the meeting that "right now, the United States' support for Israel has never been stronger.""The strong and broad bipartisan support for the State of Israel I know will be reflected in decisions that our Congress makes in the months ahead, to preserve the support the United States provides for Israel, to ensure that Israel is able to enter into negotiations, to achieve defensible borders, and secure its own peace," he added.
