Galant: Gov't Knew of Hamas Tunnels, Did Nothing-Number 2 in Kulanu list says tunnels were no secret and that when he was general, the IDF destroyed 92 tunnels.By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 1/31/2015, 7:51 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Yoav Galant, former Head of IDF Southern Command, had harsh criticism for the government's policy regarding the Hamas terror tunnels, in a Saturday interview. He said that the tunnels were no secret and that when he was general – from 2005 to 2010 – the IDF destroyed 92 tunnels, including during the 2008-9 Operation Cast Lead.“Before Cast Lead and after Cast Lead, we reached every one of these tunnels,” he said. “Ninety-two tunnels were destroyed when I was Head of Southern Command, and I did not leave a single tunnel when I finished.”"This entire process began three years later, and unfortunately, these were the consequences,” he claimed. “If you ask me, is it proper, that the state of Israel knows that tunnels are leading from Gaza to places near schools and kindergartens – not one or two, but 32 of them – and you can't say we did not know how they looked... the Chief of Staff and the Defense Minister and others had their photos taken inside them... I cannot accept this.”He also said that even if one decided to leave the tunnels intact, there should at least have been plans for dealing with attacks from the tunnels, if and when they materialized – and again blamed the government for not issuing the proper directives to the IDF.It was during Galant's term at Southern Command that terrorists scored one of their greatest successes ever against the IDF – the abduction of Cpl. Gilad Shalit, in 2006. They surprised an IDF force by using a tunnel to cross into Israel, killed two soldiers and kidnapped Shalit. He was returned in 2011 in exchange for over 1,000 terrorists. Galant said that a territorially contiguous Palestinian state must be established, and that this is an Israeli need, no less than a Palestinian one. He derided Naftali Bennett's plan for Judea and Samaria, which he said would create a single state that includes the Palestinian Arabs. After the summer's war with Hamas, the IDF confirmed rumors that Hamas had been planning a massive attack on Israeli communities by hundreds of terrorists who would infiltrate into Israel via the vast network of "terror-tunnels" dug from Gaza into Israeli territory. In a Vanity Fair report, IDF spokesperson Lt. Colonel Peter Lerner revealed that in destroying the tunnel Israel may have prevented a coordinated massacre of its civilians on an unprecedented scale."Hamas had a plan," he said. "A simultaneous, coordinated, surprise attack within Israel. They planned to send 200 terrorists armed to the teeth toward civilian populations. This was going to be a coordinated attack."

Marzel Rejects Temple Mount Ban, Chetboun's Rabbi Distances-Rabbi Tau 'clarifies' he wasn't part of Otzma Yehudit joint list with Yishai's party; Marzel 'will fight Liberman-backed enemies of Israel.'By Ido Ben-Porat, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/30/2015, 11:20 AM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

Rabbi Tzvi Tau, head of Yeshivat Har Hamor and the rabbi of MK Yoni Chetboun, felt the need to clarify on Friday that he distances himself from Chetboun's Yachad - Ha'am Itanu party headed by Eli Yishai, after it included Baruch Marzel of Otzma Yehudit in its list.Rabbi Tau's decision evidently comes due to his opinion that Jews should not ascend to the Temple Mount over a fear that they may enter forbidden areas. For his part, Yishai's rabbinic counsel Rabbi Meir Mazuz has ruled that Jews should visit the holiest site in Judaism as long as they avoid those areas. In tense talks to form a joint list, one of the last minute demands leveled by Rabbi Tau on Marzel was to obligate himself not to ascend to the Mount, which Marzel refused, leading the rabbi to pull his support.Marzel's party had previously consulted with Rabbi Dov Lior, chief rabbi of Hevron - Kiryat Arba, who told them to refuse the demand. Otzma Yehudit wants the Mount to be a central issue, demanding that it be freed from the discriminatory de facto Jordanian Waqf control that forbids Jewish prayer, and attempts to erase the Jewish nature of the site.Rabbi Tau wrote a "clarification" letter in which he said "the founding of this party in its current formation and selecting its representatives (after it joined with the enthusiastic) was done not according to me and without my agreement.""I know how to make plenty of noise alone"Despite the rabbi's decision to pull his support, Chetboun ended up not following through with a last minute threat to resign from the party on Thursday, and that night the party presented its list with Marzel on the fourth spot, after Otzma Yehudit head former MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari was removed from the list due to a demand by Yishai's party. After submitting the list, Marzel told Arutz Sheva "I will fill the great void that Ben-Ari left here in the Knesset and I will fight against the unity of the enemies of Israel that are poised to grow thanks to (Avigdor) Liberman."The statement refers to the fact that Liberman is likely to join a leftist coalition headed by Labor, after revealing his national plan that is replete with massive land concessions." After the elections apparently I'll split off into a lone faction," said Marzel, explaining the technical bloc method by which the two parties joined so that Yishai can join a Likud coalition and Otzma Yehudit can ensure its ideological red lines aren't crossed in the opposition. "Believe me, I know how to make plenty of noise alone."Marzel started off strongly in that goal, refusing to shake hands with Central Elections Committee chair judge Salim Joubran, who "just recently...asked to cancel the punishment of the terrorist (MK) Hanin Zoabi, and in a session I was present at he behaved with her with fondness.""Joubran isn't loyal to the people of Israel and I don't shake hands with those who act against us," said Marzel. Joubran raised a storm in 2012 by refusing to sing Hatikva, the national anthem of the state of israel.

Netanyahu: Iran Responsible for Har Dov Attack, Soldiers' Deaths-Prime Minister accuses Iran of orchestrating attack on an IDF patrol on Lebanese border Wednesday, in which 2 soldiers were killed.By Moshe Cohen-First Publish: 1/29/2015, 2:07 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Iran was behind the attack on an IDF patrol on the Lebanese border Wednesday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu argued Thursday.Speaking at a memorial service for late Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Netanyahu said that “Iran is the party that is arming, funding, and organizing the terror groups that operate on our border, in the north and the south."“This is the same Iran that is attempting to wrest a pacifist agreement on its nuclear program from the West,” Netanyahu noted.“They want an agreement that will allow them to continue to develop nuclear weapons. We sharply oppose this agreement. We will continue to defend ourselves from all threats, near and far.”Nuclear negotiators of Iran and the P5+1 countries – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US, plus Germany – wrapped up their second round of talks concerning Tehran's nuclear program last week. They agreed to resume their discussions next month. The talks, chaired by EU official Helga Schmid, are being held with the hope of achieving further progress towards a long-term compre hensive solution on the nuclear issue.Under an interim deal, Iran's stock of fissile material has been diluted from 20 percent enriched uranium to five percent in exchange for limited sanctions relief.Speaking Thursday, Netanyahu urged world leaders to oppose a deal with Iran that allowed Tehran to continue its uranium enrichment program.“We must realize that the world is reaching one of the most crucial moments in history,” he said. “The question is whether the world signs a bad deal with Iran and turns its back on its responsibility, or whether it presents a united front to hold back the fanaticism of Islamic radicalism before it is too late.""We must not have any doubts as to the dangers, and there is no doubt as to what must be done to prevent them from becoming reality. This is how we have acted in the past, and we will continue to do so.”Two IDF soldiers, Major Yochai Kalangel and Sgt. Dor Nini, were killed Wednesday when Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at two IDF vehicles in the Har Dov area.“Those who committed these acts will pay the full price for their actions,” Netanyahu said. “For a long time Iran has been using Hezbollah to establish a terror front against us on the Golan. We are aggressively acting to prevent this."The government of Lebanon and the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria are responsible for attacks on Israel that emerge from their territory,” he added.

Wary of Intel Leaks, Jihadists Scaling Back Social Media Use-ISIS, Nusra Front recruits concerned intelligence agencies gleaning crucial data from Facebook to use against them, pinpoint locations.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/31/2015, 6:50 PM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

After having used the Internet profusely for propaganda and recruitment, jihadist organisations have realized that investigators are gleaning crucial information online and are increasingly concealing their web presence, experts say.Apart from recent orders given to fighters to limit their exposure, erase the footprint of their online activity and avoid revealing too many place names or faces, the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Nusra Front groups are increasingly using the "Dark Web" - the hidden part of the Internet protected by powerful encryption softwares."Sometimes we get the geographical location of some fighters thanks to Facebook," Philippe Chadrys, in charge of the fight against terrorism at France's judicial police, said earlier this week." Some even publish it on the public part of their account. That gives us elements to build a case. Because of course we don't go to Syria, we have no one on the ground, and we lack proof."In November, Flavien Moreau, a 28-year-old jihadist who traveled to Syria and then returned to France, was jailed for seven years exclusively on the basis of what he posted online. And those who just months ago had happily posted videos, photos of themselves holding Kalashnikovs or of beheadings on Facebook have now realized that they were single-handedly building a case against themselves, if they ever decided to come home."We are starting to notice the beginnings of disaffection with Facebook - they have understood that's how we get incriminating evidence," said Chadrys."They are resorting more and more to Skype or WhatsApp, software that is much harder to intercept."We realize that the people we are interested in are increasingly specialized in computing. They master encryption software and methods to better erase data."

'Cyber-surveillance' key

Chadrys also said that jihadists were increasingly using the "Dark Web.""That makes our probes much more complicated. The terrorists are adapting, they understand that the telephone and Internet are handy, but dangerous. He pointed to Mehdi Nemmouche, saying last year's alleged Brussels Jewish museum killer had no mobile phone and no Facebook account.Faced with this problem, police are resorting to calling in cryptography and computing experts, but there are never enough, which slows down investigations.Last autumn ISIS published guidelines for its members, asking fighters not to tweet precise location names, to blur faces or stop giving too many details about on-going operations."Security breaches have appeared, which the enemy has taken advantage of," read the text, written in Arabic."The identity of some brothers has been compromised, as have some sites used by mujahedeen. We know that this problem does not only involve photos, but also PDF, Word and video files."In a recent report, Helle Dale of the US-based Heritage Foundation think-tank wrote that cyber-surveillance was key to the fight against ISIS "as human intelligence is hardly available on the ground, especially in Syria, and the number of unmanned drones is limited."But, she added, the group "is changing is communications strategy. It is encrypting its electronic communications, limiting its presence online and using services that delete messages as soon as they are sent."AFP contributed to this report.

Israel's US Envoy Says Bibi US Protocol Flap Republicans' Fault-Ron Dermer denies he engineered controversial Congress address, claims was under impression Boehner would notify Obama.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/31/2015, 6:41 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Israel's ambassador to Washington denied responsibility Friday for a protocol incident over an invitation for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to address the US Congress, saying that Republican leaders made the decision. The White House had expressed frustration last week when House Speaker John Boehner, a main political adversary of President Barack Obama, announced Netanyahu had been invited to address a joint meeting of Congress just weeks before Israel's snap elections. The White House signaled it was blindsided by the invitation, saying protocol dictated that national leaders contact one another when plans are being formulated for a visit."The final decision to invite the prime minister was made by the speaker's office," Israeli ambassador Ron Dermer told The Atlantic magazine in an email exchange published on the monthly's website."It was also made clear to me that it was the speaker's responsibility and normal protocol for the speaker's office to notify the administration of the invitation, including in my meeting with the secretary of state, until the speaker notified them," he added."That is why I felt it would be inappropriate for me to raise the issue with the administration."Obama is not scheduled to meet with Netanyahu during the visit.Israel's leader is expected to speak on the need to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.Netanyahu's visit coincides with Republican-led efforts in Congress to pass legislation tightening sanctions on Iran in the midst of critical international negotiations to prevent the Islamic republic from developing an atomic bomb.Obama has threatened to veto such legislation, arguing new sanctions could torpedo the talks.Dermer stressed that Netanyahu meant no disrespect to Obama by accepting Boehner's invitation."The prime minister and the president have disagreed on issues, but the prime minister has never intentionally treated the president disrespectfully - and if that is what some people felt, it certainly was not the prime minister's intention," Dermer said.

Op-Ed: Acknowledging the Core Importance of Doctrine-The especially urgent problems now associated with a steadily nuclearizing Iran should not have to be addressed by Israel on a case-by-case or ad hoc basis.Published: Wednesday, January 28, 2015 10:48 PM Prof. Louis René Beres

 Special to Israel National News

Oddly, perhaps, especially at a time of expanding existential peril, Israel has yet to make any substantive policy disclosures about its nuclear deterrent. To be sure, two former prime ministers, during their respective governing tenures, exhibited substantial “slips of the tongue" on this sensitive issue. Nonetheless, no purposefully explicit or meaningfully nuanced strategic details were ever disclosed by Premiers Shimon Peres or Ehud Olmert. Always, the bomb remained deliberately vague and obscure, still carefully well-hidden in the country's metaphoric "basement."Even today, with an apt regard for specific Israeli policies, key components, and operational details, everything nuclear is shrouded in “deliberate ambiguity.” For Jerusalem, everything nuclear continues to be "opaque." This is policy.

But is this policy smart?

On its face, the continuing Israeli commitment to a nuclear status quo does seem to make sense. After all, at least at the most obvious security levels, Israel's usual state adversaries remain reluctant to launch any new major wars. Strategic planners, therefore, are entitled to ask: "Why rock the boat"Whatever Jerusalem chooses to say or not say, every conceivable adversary is already convinced that Israel has nuclear weapons. Indeed, to believe otherwise, at this point, would be preposterous. Also, U.S. President Barack Obama, plainly less than a fan of Israel's key decision-makers, would likely object to any tangible disclosures of Israel's nuclear posture. Such disclosures, it seems clear, could prove problematic for Washington. There is more. The United States, either wittingly, or in conspicuous reaction to certain foreign government expectations, might react to any incremental Israeli nuclear disclosures by pressuring Jerusalem to join the 1968 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). In this continuing matter, it is worth recalling, President Barack Obama has never pulled back discernibly from his oft-stated preference for “a world free of nuclear weapons.”For Israel, this is a potentially injurious preference. Instead, for the Jewish State, the authentically durable mantra ought to be: Si vis pacem, para bellum atomicum. "If you want peace, prepare for nuclear war." Plainly, Mr. Obama has yet to think through the bewilderingly complex dialectics of uncertainty in a denuclearizing world. For its part, and simply to "stay alive," Israel must plan reluctantly but also recognizably for nuclear war.In the end, Israel could not long endure without nuclear weapons. Assuredly, these weapons are not needed primarily for the purpose of any actual war fighting, but rather for protracted strategic deterrence. Or, in the considered words of the Project Daniel final report, Israel's Strategic Future (2004): "The primary point of Israel's nuclear forces must always be deterrence ex ante, not revenge ex post."Soon, there may arise a distinctly overriding reason for taking the bomb out of the "basement." This reason would be the inevitably complex requirements of maintaining a credible nuclear deterrence posture. To present such an essential posture, Israel’s nuclear weapons, inter alia, will always need to appear sufficiently invulnerable to preemptive destruction by all would-be adversaries. These nuclear weapons will also need to be seen as “penetration capable” (recognizably able to hit their intended targets) and “usable” (able to be taken seriously, that is, as a plausible retaliation for certain enemy aggressions). If any of these particular enemy perceptions were absent, Israel’s nuclear weapons might not be taken with sufficient seriousness to serve as a sustainably credible deterrent. This could be the case, moreover, even though their physical existence and destructiveness would appear altogether obvious. For Israel’s nuclear weapons to protect against massive enemy attacks, some of which could sometime be genuinely existential in magnitude, Israel now needs to refine, operationalize, and possibly declare certain precise elements of its strategic doctrine and associated ordnance. Such action would be needed, among other things, to enhance deterrence credibility along the entire spectrum of major security threats, and also to provide Israel with broad conceptual frameworks from which particular decisions and tactics could be suitably extrapolated.

In principle, the especially urgent problems now associated with a steadily nuclearizing Iran should not have to be addressed by Israel on a case-by-case or ad hoc basis. Rather, Israel should stay prepared to fashion its best available response to the unprecedented Iranian nuclear threat within the broader and more coherent context of an antecedent strategic theory. In all fields, including strategic studies, theory is a “net.” Only those who cast, will catch. From Plato's time onward, dialectical thinking has required the disciplined asking and answering of certain questions. It follows that to shape its necessary strategic doctrine, Israel should promptly address the following absolutely core questions:Shall Israel begin to openly identify certain general elements of its nuclear arsenal and nuclear plans? If so, how? Would it be in Israel's best security interest to make certain others aware, at least in general terms, of its nuclear targeting doctrine; its retaliatory and counter-retaliatory capacities; its willingness under particular conditions to preempt; its willingness under particular conditions to undertake nuclear reprisals; and its corollary capacities for ballistic missile defense? If so, to what extent? A simple Arab/Islamic awareness of the Israeli bomb can never automatically imply that Israel maintains a truly credible nuclear deterrent. If, for example, Israel's nuclear arsenal were seen as vulnerable to enemy first-strikes, it still might not persuade certain enemy states to resist attacking the Jewish State. Similarly, if Israel's political leadership were seen as unwilling to resort to nuclear weapons in reprisal for anything but unconventional and fully exterminatory strikes, these enemy states might also not be deterred. If Israel's nuclear weapons were seen as uniformly too large, too destructive, and too indiscriminate for any rational use, deterrence could fail. And if Israel's targeting doctrine were seen as too predominantly “counterforce,” that is, targeted exclusively or even primarily, on enemy state weapons with supporting military infrastructures, would-be attackers might then not anticipate sufficiently high expected costs. They might, in consequence, not be deterred. As was acknowledged in the 2004 Project Daniel final report, Israel's Strategic Future, a presumptive counter-force targeting doctrine could also be damaging to Israel, here, because it could enlarge the probabilities of nuclear war fighting. Always, we must recall, Israel’s nuclear weapons should be oriented toward deterrence, and never to actual conflict. With this in mind, Israeli planners and leaders (in stark contrast to the recent nuclear military planning operationalized in Pakistan) have likely opted not to build or deploy tactical/theatre nuclear forces. If Israel's targeting doctrine were judged to be too predominantly "counterforce,” enemy states could so fear an Israeli first-strike that they would then consider more seriously striking first themselves. This more-or-less reasonable scenario would represent, in effect, a preemption of the preemption, an ironic situation, a danse macabre wherein the intended object of anticipatory self-defense (the proper legal term for any permissible preemption) would itself strike “defensively.”The dialectical dynamics of any such strategic calculations are hideously complex. In this connection, aware of the counter-city/counterforce options and implications, Israel's leaders should quickly determine the most favorable means and levels of any prospective nuclear disclosure. How shall enemy states best be apprised of Israel's targeting doctrine, so that these particular adversaries could be deterred from all forms of both first-strike and retaliatory strike action? Here is the strategic bottom line: To ensure long-term survival of Israel, it can never be sufficient that Israel's enemies merely know that the Jewish State has nuclear weapons. They must also be convinced, always, that these atomic arms are sufficiently secure and usable, and that Israel's designated leadership is determinedly willing to launch them in response to certain first-strike and/or retaliatory aggressions. No enemy state should ever be allowed to assume that Israel could be massively attacked with impunity.Always, Israel's strategic doctrine must aim at strengthening nuclear deterrence. Jerusalem can meet this utterly core objective only by convincing enemy states that a first-strike upon Israel will always be irrational. More precisely, this means successfully communicating to enemy states that the costs of any such strike will always exceed the benefits.

Iran could effectively emerge as a suicide-bomber in macrocosm.
Without exception, Israel's strategic doctrine must convince prospective attackers that their intended victim has both the willingness and the capacity to retaliate with nuclear weapons. Where an enemy state considering an attack upon Israel were somehow unconvinced about either or both of these fundamental components of nuclear deterrence, it could still choose rationally to strike first. Of course, this would depend, at least in part, upon the particular value it had originally placed upon the expected consequences of any such attack.Regarding willingness, even if Israel were fully prepared to respond to certain Arab/Islamic attacks with nuclear reprisals, any residual enemy failure to actually recognize such preparedness could provoke an attack upon Israel. Misperception and/or errors in information could quickly immobilize Israeli nuclear deterrence. It is also conceivable that Israel would, in fact, simply lack the willingness to retaliate, and that this damaging lack of willingness were perceived correctly by enemy state decision-makers. In this very worrisome case, Israeli nuclear deterrence would be immobilized, not because of any confused signals, but  because of signals that had not been suitably distorted.Regarding capacity, even if Israel were to maintain a substantial arsenal of nuclear weapons, it is essential that enemy states will always believe these weapons to be distinctly usable. This means that if a first-strike attack were ever believed capable of sufficiently destroying Israel's atomic arsenal and associated infrastructures, that country's nuclear deterrent could conceivably be immobilized. To best guard against any such perilous eventuality, Jerusalem would be well-advised to continue working closely at improving all viable and affordable submarine nuclear basing options.[1]-Even if Israel's nuclear weapons were configured such that they could not be destroyed by an enemy first-strike, enemy misperceptions or misjudgments about Israeli vulnerability could still bring about the catastrophic failure of Israeli nuclear deterrence. A further complication here concerns enemy state deployment of anti-tactical ballistic missiles, deployments which could contribute to an affirmative attack decision against Israel, by lowering the attacker's own expected costs. The importance of usable nuclear weapons must also be examined from the standpoint of probable harms. Should Israel's nuclear weapons be perceived by a would-be attacker as uniformly too high-yield, or "city-busting" weapons, they might also fail to deter. In certain circumstances, successful nuclear deterrence could even vary inversely with perceived destructiveness, at least to a point. This does not mean that Israel should ever incline toward a nuclear war-fighting doctrine (it assuredly should not), but only that it must always be aware of possibly subtle or eccentric decisional correlations between successful nuclear deterrence, and enemy perceptions of nuclear destructiveness. This brings us back to the over-all core importance of Israeli strategic doctrine. To the extent that this doctrine were to identify certain nuanced and graduated forms of reprisal - forms calibrating Israeli retaliations somewhat to particular levels of provocation – any disclosure of such doctrine could enhance Israeli nuclear deterrence. Without such disclosure, Israel's enemies would be kept guessing about the Jewish State's probable responses, a condition of persistent uncertainty that could possibly serve Israel's security for a while longer, but, at one time or another, could also fail altogether. It is time for one final observation, one already familiar to Israeli strategic planners. All nuclear deterrence is contingent upon an assumption of enemy rationality. This means that in calculating deterrence, an enemy must always be assumed to value its continued physical survival more highly than any other preference, or combination of preferences. Where this assumption might be unwarranted, all deterrence “bets” could be off, and the would-be deterrer’s own survival would likely depend upon certain apt forms of preemption, and/or ballistic missile defense - that is, BMD displaying a near-perfect “reliability of intercept.”In the relentlessly urgent matter of nuclear Iran, a peril that intersects synergistically with a broad variety of corollary terror threats in the region, Israel will soon have to decide whether that country could sometime be animated more by Jihadist visions of a Shiite apocalypse, than by the usual strategic considerations of national survival. This portentous prospect, one wherein Iran could effectively emerge as a suicide-bomber in macrocosm, is highly improbable, but it is not inconceivable.Credo quia absurdum. "I believe because it is absurd." Israel should never construct its overall strategic doctrine upon such an eccentric mantra, but it also ought not  ignore this potentially insightful paradox. In the end, this means a core responsibility to plan carefully for long-term nuclear deterrence of a rational nuclear Iran, but also to simultaneously make preparations for dealing with an already nuclear Iran that might sometime value certain religious preferences even more highly than collective physical survival. By definition, any such residual preparations would have to include viable plans for threatening to obstruct those particular Islamic religious values that Tehran might determinably value more highly than any other national preference, or combination of such preferences. In terms of nuclear deterrence, irrationality is not the same as madness. If properly understood, even an irrational national adversary can be deterred. For Israel, going forward, this means a more precise and obligatory understanding of Iran's expected ordering of religious (Shiite Islamic) preferences. As for any eleventh-hour Israeli resort to preemption or "anticipatory self- defense," it would, of course, need to be undertaken before Iran became operationally nuclear. For the moment, this starkly alternative option to long-term nuclear deterrence remains logically possible, but also manifestly unlikely. In essence, at this late stage, the expected costs to Israel of any defensive first-strike would plausibly exceed the expected gains.Si vis pacem, para bellum atomicum ."If you want peace, prepare for nuclear war."

PM Vows: Hezbollah, Iran Will 'Pay a Price' for Soldiers' Deaths-Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that those responsible for the deaths of two IDF soldiers would “pay the price for their actions."By Yaakov Levi-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 8:59 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that the parties responsible for the attack on Har Dov earlier in the day that claimed the lives of two IDF soldiers would “pay the full price for their actions.” Netanyahu made the comments Wednesday evening before a meeting of top army and government officials discussing the attack by Hezbollah terrorists earlier Wednesday. Two IDF soldiers were killed earlier Wednesday when Lebanese terror group fired antitank missiles at two IDF vehicles in the Har Dov area (Shebaa Farms) in a Hezbollah ambush.Six casualties in light to moderate condition were taken to Ziv Hospital in Tzfat. Additional casualties were evacuated to Rambam Hospital. The IDF vigorously denied Hezbollah claims that an IDF soldier had been kidnapped, and a Lebanese report later confirmed that Hezbollah had failed to capture an Israeli soldier. The two soldiers killed were identified as Major Yochai Kalangel and Sgt. Dor Nini, the IDF Spokesperson's Office announced. Netanyahu sent condolences to the families of the two victims, and wished the six soldiers injured in the attack a speedy recovery.“Those who committed these acts will pay the full price for their actions,” Netanyahu said. “For a long time Iran has been using Hezbollah to establish a terror front against us on the Golan. We are aggressively acting to prevent this. The government of Lebanon and the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria are responsible for attacks on Israel that emerge from their territory.“Our single goal is to defend Israel and Israelis,” Netanyahu added. “We have acted this way in the past, and will continue to do so.”

UN Security Council Calls Emergency Meeting Over Lebanon-UNIFIL to hold hearing on antitank missile attack on Israeli soil amid fears of an impending war.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 10:10 PM / Last Update: 1/28/2015, 10:14 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting from 2100 GMT on Wednesday to discuss the flare-up of violence on the Israeli-Lebanon border, diplomats told AFP.France requested the urgent talks in the 15-member council after two Israeli soldiers and a Spanish UN peacekeeper died in the exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah terrorists. The violence raised fears of another all-out conflict between the two countries, who fought a month-long war in 2006, in a region already wracked by fighting with Islamists in Syria and Iraq.Tension in the area has been building, especially after an Israeli air strike on the Syrian sector of the Golan Heights killed six Hezbollah terrorists and an Iranian general on January 18.Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations told the Security Council in a letter that Israel will take all necessary measures to defend itself in response to the Hezbollah attack."Israel will not stand by as Hezbollah targets Israelis," wrote Ron Prosor in the letter also sent to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.The Israeli envoy demanded that the council condemn Hezbollah and take steps to press Lebanon to disarm the Islamist militants as outlined in UN resolutions. The clashes began when Hezbollah fired an estimated 5-6 anti-tank missiles at a military convoy in Israel, prompting Israel to respond with air and ground strikes. The 10,000-strong UNIFIL mission said it had observed six rockets fired towards Israel from southern Lebanon and that Israeli forces "returned artillery fire in the same general area".The council will be meeting behind closed doors and hear a report from a senior peacekeeping official overseeing UNIFIL operations.

Is Hezbollah Digging Tunnels to Israel? IDF Intends to Find Out-For many, the prospect that Hezbollah is preparing an underground assault is far more worrisome than a mortar attack.By Moshe Cohen-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 5:22 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

On Wednesday, Hezbollah terrorist fired mortar shells at IDF vehicles in the area of Har Dov in the northern Golan – a serious enough incident, but an open one that the IDF can fight. It's the kind of attack that takes place once in awhile, but residents of northern Israel have learned to take them in stride.Far more worrying to them, however, is the prospect that Hezbollah is preparing another kind of attack – an underground one, via Hamas-style tunnels that many believe are being dug even as Hezbollah attacks IDF jeeps in the Golan. Many residents of the north have complained of hearing underground noises – some of which were very loud, and sounded very much like the sound of heavy drilling. The IDF, said Shimon Gueta, head of the Upper Galilee Regional Council, is taking these reports seriously and is actively examining these complaints. Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Gueta said that he could not explain the phenomenon, but that he had spoken to many IDF officials, and all of them have said that so far, nothing has been found. “Because there have been so many complaints recently, they are intensifying the investigations,” he added.Meanwhile, Gueta said, residents of the north were persevering with the increased security situation that transpired Wednesday, and that most of the area was now “back to normal.” While many tourists who had been set to visit the region this weekend canceled their reservations, Gueta said he was optimistic that visitors would return – if, of course, the situation calms down.Earlier Wednesday, the Lebanese terror group fired antitank missiles at two IDF vehicles in the Har Dov area (Shebaa Farms) in a Hezbollah ambush Wednesday morning. Seven people were wounded and two soldiers were killed. The IDF vigorously denied Hezbollah claims that an IDF soldier had been kidnapped, and a Lebanese report later confirmed that Hezbollah had failed to capture an Israeli soldier.

Hezbollah Fires Antitank Missile at IDF Vehicle Near Border-Mortar shells fired at IDF outposts and a missile shot at an IDF vehicle, in escalation. There are casualties and the IDF is firing back.By Gil Ronen-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 11:31 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

An antitank missile has been fired at an IDF vehicle from the Har Dov area (Shebaa Farms) in a Hezbollah ambush Wednesday morning,Six casualties in light to moderate condition have been taken to Ziv Hospital in Tzfat. Additional casualties were evacuated to Rambam Hospital. The IDF is certain that none of its soldiers was abducted.Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack, initially through journalist Rassan Ben Jiddo, who is close to the terrorist militia. The terror militia issued an announcement shortly after 1:00 p.m., in which it said that a squad named for "the Martyrs of Quneitra" fired at an IDF convoy at 11:35 and caused casualties. The announcement was presented as "Announcement Number 1," in a hint that additional operations could follow this attack. As of 1:30 p.m., exchanges of fire between the IDF and Hezbollah were ongoing.ZAKA emergency services initially said that three people were hurt. The IDF spokesman said that an antitank missile was fired at an IDF vehicle that was moving along the border. Channel 2 said there was also mortar fire at IDF outposts.Speaking on Channel 2, Col. (res.) Kobi Marom called the incident "very serious" and said that it involved casualties and will require a harsh Israeli response. In an initial reaction, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who was in Sderot, said: "Anyone  who tries to challenge us in the north should look at what happened to Hamas, not far from here, which was recently dealt the hardest blow it has received since its creation."Residents of Metula were initially told to stay inside their homes but were later given the all clear. The IDF has been firing at several targets in Lebanon in retaliation, since the incident began.

Digging for tunnels

Meanwhile, The IDF has begun digging into the soil along Israels border with Lebanon, in search of attack tunnels that may have been dug by Hezbollah terrorists into Israeli territory.Kol Yisrael Radio reported Wednesday that a drill was brought to a location near Zar'it and that it has begun to bore into the ground, in search of tunnels. The military said that it does not have any information indicating that Hezbollah has, indeed, dug tunnels into Israel, and that the move is mainly being carried out to allay the fears of local residents, who have been reporting for years that they hear digging sounds from the ground at night.A senior IDF source said that while there is no intelligence regarding an intent by Hezbollah to use tunnels in an attack on Israel, the military “would rather not take chances.”The drilling comes as preparation is high on the northern border, after Hezbollah fired rockets on Israel on Tuesday prompting an Israeli response. That exchange followed a reportedly Israeli strike on senior Hezbollah terrorists and an Iranian general last Sunday, who were apparently planning an attack on Israel.Residents along the border have also been pointing to suspicious sights and actions beyond the border fence which they believe indicate the digging of tunnels. Recently, they have been saying that they will hire equipment at their own expense to look for tunnels, if the IDF does not do so itself. When asked about the digging noises earlier this month, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) claimed "no tunnels have been located on the northern border. Noises that were heard beneath a home turned out to be a neighbor's horse stomping with its hooves."But a video posted on YouTube recently, said to have been filmed at night in Shtula on the border with Lebanon, had many seriously doubting Ya'alon's claims.Highlighting fears for many is the fact that the government was initially unwilling to destroy Hamas's terror tunnels at the outset of the fighting in Gaza earlier this year. The IDF only took action against the tunnels after several of them were used with lethal effect by Hamas, and after IDF surveillance footage showed large terrorist squads emerging from holes in the ground in Israeli territory. After the war, the government admitted that Hamas planned to use the tunnels for a deadly attack that it planned for Rosh Hashana. Jewish Home head Naftali Bennett has claimed to have prodded the government into launching the ground offensive against the tunnels, claims which independent investigative reports supported.Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that Operation Protective Edge “damaged a strategic array that Hamas put a huge effort into, for years. The ability that Hamas prepared in digging these tunnels would have enabled it to abduct and murder numerous citizens and IDF soldiers by a simultaneous attack from many tunnels that penetrate our territory."

Netanyahu Warns Hezbollah 'Look What Happened to Hamas'-Netanyahu holds emergency meeting over Hezbollah attack on Har Dov, as airports and sites close in north.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:43 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded to the Hezbollah attack on Har Dov in the Golan Heights on Wednesday, in which seven Israelis were reportedly wounded following anti-tank, rocket and mortar fire.As the fighting blazed on, Netanyahu said during a visit in the southern city of Sderot "in these moments the IDF is responding to the incidents in the north.""To all those trying to challenge us on the northern border, I suggest looking at what happened here, not far from the city of Sderot, in the Gaza strip," he added, referring to Operation Protective Edge last summer that was launched in response to a Hamas missile escalation. The prime minister concluded "Hamas absorbed the hardest blow since it was founded last summer, and the IDF is ready to act with force on any front."Netanyahu cut short his visit to Sderot to hold an emergency meeting in Tel Aviv, where the Defense Ministry headquarters are located. In response to the ongoing firefight in Har Dov, the domestic airports in Rosh Pina and Haifa were closed on Wednesday to avoid conflict with the heavy ongoing IAF aerial operations.Likewise the Mount Hermon site, Israel's sole skiing spot, was evacuated, as were several nature reserves in the area. Several roads liable to come under fire were also closed.Al Arabiya reported that Lebanese schools on the border had also been evacuated, possibly indicating intentions to further escalate from the Lebanese side.Reports had aired earlier over the possibile abduction of a soldier, but those reports were later ruled out.Iran-proxy Hezbollah fired rockets on Israel on Tuesday afternoon prompting an Israeli response. That exchange followed a reportedly Israeli strike on senior Hezbollah terrorists and an Iranian general last Sunday, who were apparently planning an attack on Israel. Hezbollah had threatened a response after the strike.

Angry Gazans Try to Storm UN Headquarters-After UN says it can't pay to repair for Hamas's war because world donors didn't deliver, protest in front of HQ turns violent.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 1:16 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Hundreds of protesters on Wednesday tried to storm the Gaza headquarters of the United Nations, an AFP correspondent said, after the UN announced it lacked funds to rebuild the enclave from the damage caused by Hamas's most recent terror war against Israel.Around 200 people demonstrated outside the building in Gaza City of UNRWA, burning tires and throwing rocks, while shouting "we are still homeless!"As the riot continued to turn violent, some tried to storm the building before police of the Hamas terrorist organization that rules Gaza, broke up the demonstration. The incident came a day after UNRWA announced it can not afford to repair tens of thousands of homes damaged during the July-August war between Israel and Hamas because donors have failed to pay."$5.4 billion was pledged at the Cairo (aid) conference last October and virtually none of it has reached Gaza. This is distressing and unacceptable. It is unclear why this funding has not been forthcoming," said UNRWA.UNRWA said cutting subsidies to displaced residents now renting alternative accommodation could force large numbers back to UN schools and centers which are already sheltering 12,000 people. The reconstruction has barely begun, not only because world nations have not delivered, but also because construction materials allowed in by Israel have been used by Hamas to rebuild terror tunnels into Israel meant to attack civilians, leading Israel to limit the transfers.Earlier this month Hamas threatened the world, demanding that it pay to rebuild Hamas's stronghold of Gaza, or else face the region "becoming" a hotbed for extremism and terrorism.

IDF Attacks Syrian Artillery in Retaliation for Rocket Attacks-IDF attacks artillery targets belonging to the Syrian army, in retaliation for earlier rocket attacks on the Golan region.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:53 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The IDF on Tuesday night attacked artillery targets belonging to the Syrian army, in retaliation for rocket attacks earlier on Tuesday towards the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon."[The rocket fire] was a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Israel," the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement, noting that direct hits at the targets were identified.“The IDF holds the Syrian regime responsible for what occurs in its territory, and will work at any time and in any way it sees fit to protect the citizens of Israel,” the statement noted.Meanwhile, residents of the northern Golan Heights reported shortly after midnight that sirens had been sounded throughout the area, including in Majdal Shams, Odem, El-ron, Buq'ata, Masade, Neve Ativ and Nimrod. However, no rockets or mortar shells were found to have landed in Israeli territory, and the IDF said it remains unclear why the sirens went off.In the attack earlier Tuesday afternoon, the IDF confirmed that two rockets had been fired at Israel.IDF spokesman Peter Lerner said in a text message the Syrian fire was "intentional, not spillover from the Syrian civil war".IDF forces returned fire. The IDF Spokesperson's Office confirmed at 2:00 p.m. that it had successfully struck the source of the rocket fire. The rocket fire follows reports aired less than 24 hours ago that the IDF has been building trenches along the Syrian border ahead of possible escalation with any number of rebel groups and outposts which pose a threat against Israel.Northern residents and the IDF have been on high alert throughout the week, after an IAF airstrike in the Syrian Golan Heights killed a senior Hezbollah commander and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards general last Sunday, along with several other Hezbollah and Iranian fighters.Hezbollah responded by vowing an attack on Israel, but made clear it does not want another full-scale war.

Iranian Official Calls to 'Wipe Out the Zionist Regime'-A senior Iranian general says last week's airstrike in Syria "will accelerate the collapse of the Zionist regime".-By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 1/27/2015, 6:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Iran is continuing to threaten to retaliate against Israel for an airstrike last week, in which Iran's General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was killed. On Monday, a senior official in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, General Ramezan Sharif, declared that the airstrike “will accelerate the collapse of the Zionist regime.”“Undoubtedly, the bloods shed in the front of awakening the Islamic Ummah have provided the ground more than ever for wiping out the Zionist regime,” Sharif said in Tehran, according to the Fars news agency. He called on Muslim states to unite and said that the Islamic countries should desist from provoking rifts and use all their capacities to fight “the child-killing Zionist regime” instead.Another Iranian official, General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, said that the airstrike justified “striking painful blows at the Zionist regime.”Naqdi warned “the Zionists” that they would soon be forced to leave “the occupied Palestinian territories”, and added, according to Fars, "They will not experience tranquility, these bloods will not remain without a response and they should remain fully alerted until complete annihilation of the Zionist regime."In the airstrike, six Iran-proxy Hezbollah terrorists were killed, including Jihad Mughniyeh who was the son of the late Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh. Six Iranian soldiers were also killed, including Allahdadi.Reportedly the 12 were engaged in a surveillance mission planning an attack on Israel from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights when they were taken out by a missile fired from an IDF helicopter.Monday’s threats are the latest in a series of threats from Iranian officials over the airstrike. Several days ago, General Hossein Salami, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards, threatened a missile attack on Israel, indicating it would come from Judea and Samaria and not from Lebanon.Going further, Revolutionary Guards Minister Mohsen Rafighdoost said last Wednesday that the strike would pave the way for a war against Israel. As well, a Farsi-language Iranian news site affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, has suggested that the sons of Israeli leaders are being targeted as a response to the Israeli airstrike. The news site, Mashregh News, detailed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's sons Yair and Avner may be targeted, and likewise listed the sons of former prime ministers, including Ehud Olmert's son Shaul and Ariel Sharon's sons Gilad and Omri.

Yishai Collapses Otzma Yehudit Talks by Banning Temple Mount-In shocking last minute demands, Yishai's party demands Otzma Yehudit enter coalition at cost of ideology for yeshiva budgets.By Ido Ben-Porat, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/28/2015, 12:14 AM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

After weeks of tension and public calls for former MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari's Otzma Yehudit and MK Eli Yishai's Yachad - Ha'am Itanu to run on a technical bloc joint list, negotiations have fallen through after Yishai's party made surprising last minute demands on Ben-Ari.The two parties were in zero hour talks on Tuesday night ahead of a Thursday deadline to submit a joint list, when Yishai made an odd offer giving nationalist activist Baruch Marzel the fourth spot instead of Ben-Ari, who would get the sixth spot. But that apparently isn't what caused the talks to break down - instead, it was that Yishai and his associates MK Yoni Chetboun and Rabbi Moshe Hager demanded that Otzma Yehudit members obligate themselves, and announce to the media, that they will permanently not ascend to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. The demand raised anger, given that Otzma Yehudit has asked for Jewish prayer rights on the Mount, where the Jordanian Waqf enjoys de facto rule and has forbidden Jewish prayer, to be a key platform plank. Furthermore, Yishai's rabbinic counsel Rabbi Meir Mazuz has ruled in support of visiting the Temple Mount.A source in Otzma Yehudit revealed that another demand was made by Yishai's party, forcing Otzma Yehudit to join a coalition formed by Likud head Binyamin Netanyahu "at any price," so as not to harm the budgets transferred to the institutions of Rabbi Tzvi Tau, head of Yeshivat Har Hamor and a key factor in bringing Chetboun in with Yishai. This second request is particularly baffling given that the technical bloc paradigm by which the two were to jointly run would allow them to separate after elections, with both parties keeping their seats and Yishai likely joining Netanyahu while Ben-Ari would be in the opposition. Ben-Ari has made clear that he would not join any coalition unless firm ideological red lines were set, such as not releasing terrorists, not freezing construction, not holding negotiations with the Palestinian Authority (PA), and not letting Hamas survive another operation - all of which the outgoing coalition did."You must not compromise on the Temple Mount"The Otzma Yehudit source revealed that Ben-Ari's party agreed to Yishai's unusual request to have Marzel in the fourth spot instead of Ben-Ari, but a moment before the two sides signed on a joint list, the demands to not visit the Temple Mount and to sit in a Netanyahu coalition at any price came up.The leaders of Otzma Yehudit counseled with Rabbi Dov Lior, chief rabbi of Hevron - Kiryat Arba, who ordered them not to agree to the surprising demands."You must not compromise on matters of the land of Israel and the Temple Mount," stated the rabbi. "Emphasis can be made on different points, but not on a condition that forbids ascending to the Mount forever, or to receive money for institutions and support Bibi (Netanyahu) at any price."Following the impasse, Ben-Ari announced "we have a very clear statement - we want all of the land of Israel and definitely we will not give up on the Temple Mount. We were ready for a softened phrasing by which during the period of unity we wouldn't ascend the Temple Mount, but they want humiliation here, and to kick us out, and it seems they are succeeding.""We are currently weighing our steps, it is likely that we will submit our list - we can't give up on our ideology, not even so as to be in the Knesset; we are in the Knesset for ideology," explained Ben-Ari.Running together, polls showed the two parties would comfortably enter with seven seats, although separately polls indicate they both are liable not to pass the threshold that was raised by the outgoing government.

Netanyahu: The World is Still Anti-Semitic - Jews Have Changed-In speech for Holocaust Memorial Day, PM says anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism, vows to stop Iranian threat of nuclear annihilation.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 1/27/2015, 10:03 PM- ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem on Tuesday, marking International Holocaust Memorial Day and the liberation of Auschwitz."My responsibility as Prime Minister of Israel is to ensure that the State of Israel will never again be threatened with destruction," began Netanyahu. "My responsibility is to see to it that there will not be a reason to build additional memorial sites such as Yad Vashem."Turning to the threat of nuclear annihilation from the Islamic regime in Iran, Netanyahu said "the pending agreement with Iran is an agreement that endangers the State of Israel. It leaves Iran with the capabilities that will allow it to arm itself with nuclear weapons, one bomb at first and afterwards many atomic bombs.""Even those who try to challenge us within our borders will discover that we are ready to respond with force. Israel views with utmost gravity the attack against it from Syrian territory. Those who play with fire will get burned," he warned.Seventy years from Auschwitz, Netanyahu stated "preserving the memory of the Holocaust is more important today than ever before. We live in an age of resurgent and violent anti-Semitism, and commemorations like this ceremony remind us where humanity's oldest and most enduring hatred can lead.""Hatred of the Jews...has now returned in full force," emphasized the prime minister. "Around the world, Jewish communities are increasingly living in fear. But it’s not just the Jewish people that is being slandered, vilified and targeted. It’s the Jewish state as well."Netanyahu noted that Hamas's very charter calls for the genocide of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish state, portraying Israel "as the embodiment of all evil in the world" as was done by anti-Semites against individual Jews before the foundation of the modern Jewish state."And what do the so-called ‘enlightened’ organs of the international community do in response?" asked the prime minister. Answering his own question, he listed the various atrocities being committed in the Middle East, and noted that the Geneva Convention members, UN Human Rights Council and International Criminal Court (ICC) meet precisely to condemn Israel."No rational examination of the facts could justify this assault on Israel, the Middle East’s only democracy, the most beleaguered democracy on earth," he said. "This obsession with the Jewish people and their state has a name. It's called anti-Semitism."

"We will defend ourselves against Iran"

While the hatred of Jews may not have changed, "the Jews have changed," said Netanyahu. "We are no longer a stateless people endlessly searching for a safe haven. ...Today we are an independent and sovereign people in our ancestral homeland."Netanyahu went on to emphasize that while "the Jewish people will defend itself by itself against any threat," it is appreciative of support from friends around the world, particularly from the United States, "our great ally."But after mentioning the dangers of Iran, he reiterated "it is the Government of Israel that holds the ultimate responsibility for the security of the one and only Jewish state. ...Israel will reject any agreement that leaves Iran as a nuclear threshold state. Regrettably, our understanding is that the offer made by the P5+1 (world powers - etc.) does exactly that."Not only would such an agreement threaten Israel with a nuclear-armed foe bent on its destruction, but it "is sure to spark a nuclear arms race in the region that would turn the Middle East into a nuclear tinderbox," he added."On this day of Holocaust remembrance, I pledge to you what we could neither say nor do 70 years ago," concluded Netanyahu. "Israel will always do what needs to be done to ensure the security of the Jewish people and the one and only Jewish state. That is the significance of this day."

01/27/2015 -VATICAN INSIDER-“Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering”-Auschwitz-Birkenau-Francis wrote this in a tweet sent on Holocaust Remembrance Day. At a service held in memory of the victims, the Archbishop of Krakow, Stanislaw Dziwisz, said their cries were stifled by terrible violence-vatican insider staff

rome-“The cries of victims were stifled by terrible violence,” the Archbishop of Krakow Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz recalled during the liturgy celebrated in memory of the those who lost their lives in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, 70 years after the Red Army liberated the concentration camp in their advance toward Berlin. The UN introduced the International Holocaust Remembrance Day of 27 January - this was the day the Nazi concentration camp was liberated in 1945 – in 2005.A part from Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and government representatives from over 40 countries, today’s liturgy was also attended by a group of 300 survivors of the extermination plan that cost more than 1,200,000 people their lives, 90% of them Jewish.SIR, the news agency of the Italian Episcopal Conference, informs that the celebration was followed by a moment of interreligious and ecumenical prayer which concluded with candles being lit at the spot where prisoners were executed by the Nazis. Manfred Deselaers, a German priest  who has been working at the Centre for Dialogue and Prayer since 1995 near the camp, recalled the words pronounced by Benedict XVI during his visit to Auschwitz: “There is hope that this place of horror will gradually become a place for constructive thinking, and that remembrance will foster resistance to evil and the triumph of love.”Francis marked today’s occasion by making his own voice heard via Twitter: “Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering and pleads for a future of respect, peace and encounter among peoples.”Mieczyslaw Cislo, President of the Council for Inter-religious Dialogue of the Polish Bishops' Conference, invited “all people of good will” to take part in the initiative “Flame of Memory”. On Remembrance Day, at 6 pm, people across Poland will place lit candles at their windows in remembrance of the Holocaust victims. “Lighting a candle, the prelate explains, is a sign of solidarity with the people of Israel and our elder brothers in the faith who are mourning the victims of Nazism,” the prelate explained. According to the Shalom Foundation, which is promoting the event, “although we cannot bring back the world destroyed in the Shoah, it is our duty to preserve its memory as a warning to future generations, and as part of the common heritage of Poles and Jews”.

DANIEL 8:19-26
19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.(IRAQ-IRAN)
21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia:(GREECE (EU)-UKRAINE AREA) and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.(IRAQ)
22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(NEW AGE HOGWASH) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

Greece says No to EU statement on Russia By Andrew Rettman-BRUSSELS, Today, 18:52-JAN 27,15-EUOBSERVER

The new far-left government in Greece dropped a bombshell on its first day in office by abjuring an EU statement on Russia. It said in a press communique on Tuesday (27 January): “the aforementioned statement was released without the prescribed procedure to obtain consent by the member states and particularly without ensuring the consent of Greece”.“In this context, it is underlined that Greece does not consent to this statement”.It added that its new PM, Alexis Tsipras, expressed “discontent” in a phone call to EU foreign relations chief Federica Mogherini. The EU statement on Russia, published on Tuesday morning, claimed all 28 leaders had agreed Russia bears “responsibility” for a rocket attack on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which killed 30 people. It also called on foreign ministers to “consider any appropriate action” - further sanctions on Russia. It was drafted by the cabinet of EU Council chief Donald Tusk, a Russia-critical Pole, on Monday evening. His people say he phoned Tsipras and that they contacted all the capitals' “sherpas” - senior officials dealing with EU issues in each leader's private office. They also say no one on the Greek side voiced objections until Monday morning. They then suggested adding a footnote to the statement, but “as Greece did not want such a footnote, it was clear to us that we could publish the statement as agreed in the evening”.For its part, the Greek embassy to the EU is playing down the fiasco as confusion linked to the hand-over of power in Athens. But one EU diplomat told this website Greece had tried to remove the line blaming Russia for the Mariupol killing. He said Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia also tried, and failed, to “water down” the communique.Meanwhile, an EU Council official said the situation - a retroactive abjuration of an EU line - has “never happened before”.“I guess this means it’s now a statement of 27 EU heads of state or government instead of 28 and we will have to add the footnote”, he said.“But it’s not a legally binding document anyway, so it doesn’t become invalid in that sense”.

Fellow traveller?

Tsipras had earlier attracted comment for meeting with the Russian ambassador to Greece on Monday, just a few hours after being named PM.The diplomat hand-delivered a telegram from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying Putin “is confident that Russia and Greece will continue to develop their traditionally constructive co-operation in all areas”.It is normal protocol, with China following suit on Tuesday. But the EU bombshell and the Russian meeting come in the context of Tsipras’ pro-Russia track record. He visited Moscow last May to meet with Russian MPs and Putin associates. He voiced support, at the time, for Crimea’s “referendum” on independence. He said the EU “is shooting itself in the foot” by imposing sanctions and complained that the pro-EU government in Kiev contains “neo-Nazis”.His MEPs have also voted against almost every Russia-critical act or resolution in the European Parliament. The list includes EP ratification of the EU-Ukraine association pact, criticism of Russia’s crackdown on Memorial (an NGO), and criticism of the annexation of Crimea.

Greece and Ukraine top EU agenda this WEEK By Andrew Rettman-BRUSSELS, 26. Jan, 09:27-EUOBSERVER

EU finance chiefs will this week digest Syriza’s victory in Greece, while top diplomats attend an emergency meeting on Ukraine. The 19 eurozone ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday (26 January) and are joined by the rest of their EU peers on Tuesday. The victory by the far-left party comes amid talks on whether to extend Greece’s bailout programme beyond 28 February to keep international aid flowing.Syriza had earlier threatened to tear up the bailout contract and call for a debt amnesty, raising fears that Greece will leave the single currency. Its leader, Alexis Tsipras, moderated his position in the run-up to the vote, indicating he might settle for softer terms on debt repayment instead. But his big win will send a political shockwave through the EU, emboldening other far-left parties, such as Podemos in Spain. It will also see the European Commission make way for its first far-left member, with the current Greek commissioner tipped to run for the Greek presidency.

Mariupol attack

Russia’s new offensive in south-east Ukraine will see EU foreign ministers hold a snap meeting on Thursday. German chancellor Angela Merkel called Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Sunday to urge “de-escalation”. France’s Francois Hollande also voiced “grave concern” and said he would try to “calm the situation”.Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, and the US have already called for extra sanctions.Meanwhile, Finnish foreign minister Erkki Tuomioja likened the behaviour of Russia-controlled forces to the Milosevic regime in former Yugoslavia. He said their attack on Mariupol, in south-east Ukraine, in which they fired rockets at a residential area, reminded him of a mortar attack by Serb forces on Sarajevo in 1994.EU agriculture ministers will on Monday also discuss Russia’s ban on EU food exports. The commission, earlier this month, agreed to let Russia choose which countries can resume exports based on Russian health inspections. The deal has raised alarm Russia will use it to divide the EU by rewarding doves and punishing hawks.

Hebdo fall-out

For their part, EU interior ministers will, at an informal meeting on Thursday, discuss security reforms in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.Ideas - to be taken forward at a summit in February - include criminalising “foreign fighters”, clamping down on Internet radicalisation, getting EU airlines to share data on passengers, and tightening up Schengen passport-free travel rules.Finance will also top the agenda in the European Parliament.Jyrki Katainen - the man in charge of the commission’s €315 billion investment fund - will explain latest thinking on the project to MEPs on the economic affairs committee on Monday. The finance ministers of Germany and Italy will on Tuesday tell the committee if they see room for flexibility in EU debt and deficit rules.EU energy commissioner Maros Sefcovic will brief deputies on the industry and environmental committees on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, on plans to reduce EU gas dependence on Russia.Amid the Greek drama, ECB chief Mario Draghi will also be in the EU capital on Monday to meet competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager. Her spokeswoman told EUobserver "they will discuss the broader perspectives - the economic situation in the EU and how to increase the competitiveness of the European economy”.

Auschwitz

Elsewhere in Europe, a handful of VIPs will on Monday go to a WWII memorial in the Czech Republic.
A bigger turnout is expected for Poland’s 70th anniversary on Tuesday of the liberation of Nazi Germany’s Auschwitz death camp. The Auschwitz event has been marked by Putin’s decision to stay away even though he was invited in the same way as other guests.Polish authorities told EUobserver they sent a note to the Russian embassy in Warsaw asking it to send a delegate "at the highest level". Putin's spokesman later said he isn't going because he didn't get a "personal" invitation.

Hamas Conducts Large-Scale Rocket Test-10 missiles fired from ruins of Gush Katif into sea as Gaza terrorist rulers prepare for next war against Israel.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 1/26/2015, 2:06 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Israel and the Gaza-based terrorist organization Hamas may have reached a truce ending Operation Protective Edge late last August, but that didn't stop Hamas on Monday from firing rockets into the sea as part of tests to improve its ballistic capabilities and prepare for its next war against Israel.Channel 2 reports that a full ten rockets were fired from the ruins of the Jewish community of Gush Katif into the Mediterranean Sea during the test, and that it was meant to expand the range of Hamas's rockets which have already reached Hadera outside of Haifa in the north.Hamas has been busily developing its own domestically produced rockets, including the M-75 long range missile, given that Israel has been earnestly working to prevent outside arms from Hamas backers including Qatar, Turkey and Iran from reaching the terrorist group. This is far from the first missile test Hamas has conducted since its last rocket war on the Jewish state, with the most recent being held late last month when two rockets were fired into the sea.Hamas has not only been conducting tests; since the truce terrorists in Gaza have breached the ceasefire at least three times in rocket barrages on Israel, which Hamas has denied responsibility for despite being in control of the coastal enclave. The most recent attack occurred last month, just days before the last rocket test, and one day after Hamas held its largest military exercise since Operation Protective Edge on the ruins of two former Israeli villages - Dugit and Nissanit - in Gaza which were evacuated in the 2005 Disengagement plan, allowing Hamas to take over.In response to the rocket attack, the IAF struck Gaza concrete factories used to rebuild the terror tunnels leading into Israel to attack Israeli civilians. During the operation, the IDF destroyed over 30 such tunnels, but since it ended Hamas has been busily rebuilding them.

Report: IDF Digging Trenches Along the Syrian Border-Northern Command digging trenches to prevent infiltration attempts as border tensions heat up.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 1/26/2015, 9:19 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The IDF has begun digging trenches along the border with Syria, Walla! News reports Monday night, amid fears of real escalation between Israel and Islamists in neighboring Syria and Lebanon. The mechanical engineering company of the IDF's Northern Command has employed tractors and borders to dig the trenches, a source told the news site, amid specific concerns regarding terrorist infiltrations by car via border crossings."The trenches are being dug along vulnerable spots on the border, after a thorough analysis [of the risks], to prevent free traffic in the area and reduce infiltration," the military source stated. Outposts near the Syrian border are not far from rebel positions from the Al-Nusra Front and the Free Syrian Army, who patrol the border regularly in cars and motorcycles. In addition, Western diplomatic officials said that Israel has imparted to Lebanon a stronger warning than before, emphasizing that Jerusalem will respond to any attack on Israel or Israeli institutions anywhere in the world. This was conveyed today the Arabic Al Hayat newspaper, published in London, which claimed that Israel has given warning, through foreign ambassadors, that Hezbollah would be perceived as responsible for any harm to Israeli targets, "even at the other end of the world."Northern residents and the IDF have been on high alert throughout the week, after an IAF airstrike in the Syrian Golan Heights killed a senior Hezbollah commander and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards general last Sunday, along with several other Hezbollah and Iranian fighters.Hezbollah responded by vowing an attack on Israel, but made clear it does not want another full-scale war.But the IDF has nonetheless remained on high alert, and covertly moved Iron Dome batteries close to its northern borders late Monday night.Ahead of possible retaliatory strikes, the IDF also closed several roads in the north Tuesday night, including the old road between the towns of Avivim and Dovev, the road between the moshav Zar'it and the Lebanese border.Hours earlier, a convoy of civilian vehicles with Hezbollah flags fired shots in the air close to the border with Israel, raising concerns further.

Poll: Labor Pulling Ahead, But Public Prefers Netanyahu-Labor has a three-mandate gain on Likud, but just 34.5% of respondents prefer Herzog as prime minister.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 1/26/2015, 10:04 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The left is gaining ground, according to a Channel 2 poll released Monday night, with Labor three seats ahead of Likud.Labor is projected to gain 26 seats in the 2015 elections, according to this poll, with Likud a distant second at 23.Jewish Home is perennially in third place, though down several seats at just 15, whereas the joint Arab list has 12 seats.Of the Center parties, Yesh Atid leads with 9 seats, new party Kulanu with 8, and Yisrael Beytenu would gain seven seats.Bottoming out the poll are the hareidi parties and Meretz, with United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Shas at seven seats each and Meretz at six. Eli Yishai's Yachad-Ha'am Itanu party misses the Knesset threshold.Despite Labor's victory, 44.4% of respondents still prefer Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu as prime minister, vs. 34.5% who prefer Herzog and 21.1% who remain undecided. When asked about the possibility of a Likud-Labor government, 48% are against the joint coalition, whereas 30% expressed support for the idea.

Op-Ed: 70 Years Later and Jewish Blood Has Not Yet Dried-Europe would love to drown the State of Israel in the Mediterranean.Published: Monday, January 26, 2015 9:52 AM-Giulio Meotti
Read the Simon Wiesenthal Center's top ten list of the world's anti-Semites for 2014. You will discover that Europe's judeophobia is worse than the Islamic one. That Amedy Coulibaly took the lives of four Jews in a Paris' kosher supermarket, but the democratic anti-Semitic Europeans spread a not less virulent type of anti-Semitism.The top spot in the new Wiesenthal list goes to a Belgian doctor who refused to treat an old Jewish woman last summer. When the son called again, the doctor stated: "Send her to Gaza for a few hours, then she’ll get rid of the pain."Media personalities, novelists, singers, musicians, artists, writers, journalists, bureaucrats: these are the world's biggest anti-Semites.

Isn't it amazing? unbelievable?

If you search in the previous Wiesenthal anti-Semitism lists, you will find a famous German leftist journalist (Jakob Augstein), a French cartoonist (Zeon), the Norwegian daily Dagbladet, the Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker, the United Church of Canada, the Pink Floyd's founder Roger Waters, the legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier and the Europeam Union trade chief Karel de Gucht.Media personalities, novelists, singers, musicians, artists, writers, journalists, bureaucrats: these are the world's biggest anti-Semites. I am not surprised at the fact that Ayatollah Khamenei, Mahmoud Abbas or Muslim Brotherhood officials appear in these black lists. But I am surprised that the world's most famous Europeans, those in touch with global public opinion, dominate the top ten.It has happened before. Martin Heidegger, Carl Schmitt, Gottfried Benn, Ernst JĂ¼nger, Mircea Eliade, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Ernst von Karajan, Knut Hamsun, Emile Cioran and Louis Ferdinand CĂ©line are just some of the most famous representatives of European culture who embraced Adolf Hitler's dream. Most of them were also ferocious anti-Semites.This is what these new good anti-Semites are now saying: "O Israel, drink from the poisoned cup that for many years you have put to the Arabs' lips! Your end is near, the Palestinians have decided to send their heroes, the sons of Islam. And they will cleanse the land of Palestine. So Israel, scatter your tears, you are approaching the day of destruction".It is 70 years after the Holocaust, Jewish blood has not yet dried.Always defeated by the Israelis on the battlefield, the Arab Islamic world today aims to buy the complicity of a continent, Europe, through its intellectuals and leaders. Since the creation of Israel, Arab enemies, with the help of Westerners, have tried to destroy that small Jewish nation with open war, and failed. They then attempted to do it with terrorism and failed. Then media and culture. And here they have been much more successful.Large segments of the international public opinion are now trying to submerge the small Jewish island. It is a kind of Western hypnosis: destroy Israel, whatever the cost. Europe wants to seize Israel by the throat and drown it in the Mediterranean.

Canadian Holocaust survivor returns to Auschwitz for the first time-The Canadian PressBy Liam Casey, The Canadian Press | JAN 26,15-YAHOONEWS
A Canadian woman who was one of the few children to come out of Auschwitz alive on liberation day in 1945 has returned to the infamous Nazi death camp for the first time.Miriam Friedman Ziegler said she had not planned to visit the camp during her visit this week to Poland, where she has joined other Holocaust survivors to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. But at the last minute, she decided to return to the place she last saw when she was nine years old."The most difficult day since the war for me was yesterday," Friedman Ziegler told The Canadian Press on Monday from her hotel in Krakow, Poland. The 79-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., visited the camp on Sunday, accompanied by her daughter. It was cold, snowy and emotionally overwhelming.Friedman Ziegler said she stopped in front of a barbed-wire fence — the same spot where 70 years ago, a photographer captured an iconic photo of 13 wide-eyed children — she was one of them — looking on as the Red Army soldiers approached. The horrible memories of experimentation and death flooded back as she stood there. She got back in the van with her daughter and sobbed.Within hours, however, she rebounded."Here I am, I was the lucky one," Friedman Ziegler said."I survived and I can talk about it and I'm a witness to it that it did happen."On Monday she reunited with three of the women who were captured in the black-and-white photo taken by Alexander Vorontsov, a Red Army combat photographer, shortly after the camp's liberation. She posed with the others for a new photo at the hotel in Krakow between a slew of events for more than 100 survivors. In one photograph, she lifted her sleeve to show the prisoner number the Nazis tattooed on her skin upon entering Auschwitz. It mimics the original image in which she instinctively showed her tattoo to the arriving soldiers. She spoke with the others, going over their stories and comparing notes.Friedman Ziegler's daughter, Adrienne Shulman, said her mother is holding up emotionally."It's amazing going from a day that really was a living nightmare to her rejoicing and laughing and smiling and sharing stories," Shulman said.Other Canadians were among the survivors returning to Auschwitz this week. Mordechai Ronen, an 82-year-old from Toronto, made the trip very reluctantly and said he wasn't sure he had the strength to handle it emotionally. After the survivors prayed in Hebrew he cried out, "I don't want to come here anymore!"About 300 survivors will gather with leaders from around the world on Tuesday to remember the 1.1 million people killed at Auschwitz and the millions of others killed in the Holocaust.Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, which is hosting the commemoration along with the USC Shoah Foundation, said hatred in the world remains strong."Shortly after World War II, after we saw the reality of Auschwitz and the other death camps, no normal person wanted to be associated with the anti-Semitism of the Nazis," Lauder said. "But, as the Holocaust grows more distant and survivors disappear, extremists grow more bold in targeting Jews. Stoked by a false narrative that blames Israel for a litany of the world's problems, anti-Semitism is resurgent and deadly."Friedman Ziegler is also worried the message of the Holocaust is being lost over time, which is the reason she's sharing her story with the public for the first time. Yet she's also buoyed by the hundreds of children she saw at the museum in Auschwitz on Sunday."The young generation should know that it did happen," she said."It should never happen again."— With files from the Associated Press
