President Rivlin to Announce New Prime Minister Tomorrow Evening-Reuven Rivlin looks set to formally announce Binyamin Netanyahu as PM, after a majority of 67 MKs back him to lead coalition government.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 3/24/2015, 7:57 PM-ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is expected to be tasked on Wednesday with forming the next coalition government as the final official results of the March 17 election are published. The presidency said in a statement that the head of the Central Elections Committee would formally deliver the results to President Reuven Rivlin late afternoon. Then at 7:30 p.m. (1730 GMT) Rivlin is to give the member of parliament selected to form the next parliament an invitation to do so.Netanyhu's Likud party won 30 of parliament's 120 seats, compared with 24 for its nearest rival, the left-wing Zionist Union. In Israel, it is not necessarily the leader of the largest party who forms the next government and becomes premier, but the one who can form a working coalition, preferably with a majority of at least 61.Firm backing for Netanyahu to stay in the post for a third consecutive term emerged during talks on Sunday and Monday between Rivlin and representatives of the 10 parties elected to parliament who told him whom they would recommend as prime minister.Six parties (Likud, Jewish Home, UTJ, Shas, Yisrael Beytenu and Kulanu) comprising 67 lawmakers, threw their support behind Netanyahu. At 8:05 p.m. (1805 GMT) on Wednesday, Rivlin and the premier-designate are to deliver public statements, the presidency said. The nominee will then plunge into intense horsetrading as potential coalition partners battle for portfolios and prestige.Netanyahu has said he is seeking a partnership with Likud's "natural allies", referring to nationalist parties Jewish Home and Yisrael Beytenu, and haredi parties UTJ and Shas. Both he and Isaac Herzog, leader of the second-placed Zionist Union, have ruled out joining forces in a unity government.Public radio said Netanyahu met Tuesday with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beytenu party, and would hold evening talks with Likud defector Moshe Kahlon, whose newly-minted centrist Kulanu party won 10 seats.AFP contributed to this report.

ZOA President: Israelis Made the Right Choice-While it is unfair that Israelis have to base their votes on security, President Morton Klein says they made the right choice.By Gedalyah Reback-First Publish: 3/24/2015, 10:51 AM / Last Update: 3/24/2015, 10:55 AM- ISRAEL NATIONALNEWS
Morton Klein is not just relieved, but proud that Israelis came through in the end to choose a Likud-led administration."Israelis understood peace with the Palestinian Authority was not realistic," says Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA). "I'm very proud of Israelis for choosing reality and security over fantasy. Herzog and Livni are living in a fantasy land."The ZOA President was referring explicitly to the prospect that a Palestinian state represented a security paradigm for Israel, which in by seeing a quarter of Israelis vote for Likud in the context of Netanyahu's rejection of that model, represented a greater victory for Klein. This Israeli election had seemed to be defined not by security and foreign policy but domestic issues like the cost of living. For Israel, that represented something very different, and might only look to 2013 for a parallel election cycle where those matters were the ones Israelis used to determine their choices for Prime Minister. That in the last week of the campaign Israelis seemed to reclaim security as their #1 campaign concern is also a sign of vindication according to Klein. When Arutz Sheva asked if it might be in anyway tragic that a plurality of Israelis did vote on security rather than economics - the issue that tends to decide elections in most other Western democracies - Klein responded that in ways it definitely was." Unfortunately, when Israel is surrounded by enemies, everything else is secondary. It is a shame that they can't live like other countries, but it's the right decision to make," said Klein. "It would be a pleasure to focus on domestic issues as a priority," but Israelis currently don't have that luxury.Running the Zionist Organization of America, Klein says that he has not noticed an issue promoting Zionism itself among Americans."I explain to people that Zionism is merely the belief that Jews have the right to establish a state in their ancient homeland." From that starting point, he has experienced no issues.President Obama is most definitely a challenge however, mainly because of direct relations between Israel and the US and less so his impact on Israel's relations with Americans (and American Jews)."Americans & Congress are (still) showing extraordinary support for Israel despite Obama. AIPAC never criticizes Obama, but even they came out with a statement demanding he change what he is doing. Congress is very angry with Obama and they don't respect him.""He might be hurting Israel, but he is hurting himself, too," says Klein. He cites recent surveys where Netanyahu's speech has shown not to have had a negative impact on Americans' perceptions of the Jewish State."Four to one, Americans support Israel over the Palestinians. The majority of Congress went to that speech despite heavy pressure from the President. Israel has strong support in spite of Obama. People are disgusted by his irrational hatred of Israel."In Klein's opinion, things might get worse before they get better, as Barack Obama's personal philosophy is too biased against Israel's positions no matter who represents the country as its Prime Minister."He would have caused a rupture with Israel no matter who was the Prime Minister. His fight is with Israel, not Netanyahu. He's still fight with Herzog over the Palestinians and the Iran deal because even Herzog would not be able to do the things that Obama would want.""Had Herzog won, the fight might take longer (to happen), but it would come out. He merely exploited issues with Netanyahu.""In the next 22 months he'll do anything he can to unilaterally create a Palestinian state," proclaims Klein. "We're just going to have to ride it out as best we can."While Klein is confident that should someone like Hillary Clinton become President next, whatever inevitable fights she would have with the Israeli government would not reach the crescendo in breakdown as they have with Barack Obama. He does see that as a crescendo, and imply that even inside the current administration there is displeasure for the degree to which Obama has taken his crisis with Jerusalem."Privately, people in the White House have told me that they are getting upset and feel he is going too far. Democrats privately I've spoken with are very upset with Obama."Klein acknowledges though that the far left parts of the Democratic Party have become much more influential over Obama's term. Yet, that Democratic caucus is going to have to be wary of the broad support Israel still enjoys in the United States if it hopes to maintain a mainstream position going into the next election cycle."Democrats have to take note of this and decide if they want to continue being hostile (to Israel)."Klein also notes the White House has not responded to inflammatory remarks of gestures by Mahmoud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority the same way the White House has to Netanyahu's recent comments and policies. It brings into question how committed the White House is to fighting off anti- Semitism and the delegitimization of Israel when it does not condemn naming public squares after terrorists, statements that proclaim no Jews would be allowed to live in a Palestinian state, or Fatah's own emblem replacing Israel. In addressing the argument that questioning Israel's legitimacy as a Jewish state was in itself legitimate, Klein offered the following sharp statement:"Being pro-Israel doesn't mean you can't criticize Israel. But if you say that Italy shouldn't exist, then you hate Italians. You aren't critical of their policies. So too,if you say Israel shouldn't exist, then you hate Jews."

Livni Tops the Race for Foreign Minister-TNS poll for Walla! finds 24% of respondents prefer Livni as foreign minister, Likud minister Erdan trails with 17%.By Cynthia Blank-First Publish: 3/8/2015, 1:55 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

With elections days away, Israel is abuzz with discussions and polls of who will be the next prime minister and, to a lesser extent, the next finance minister and defense minister. However, one important position has, until now, been left off the table almost entirely - that of foreign minister. According to a TNS poll conducted this week and published by Walla! News, Labor co-chair Tzipi Livni has more of the public's trust for the position than any other potential candidate.Twenty-four percent of respondents said they found the former justice minister appropriate for the job of foreign minister. Trailing behind Livni with 17% is Interior Minister Gilad Erdan, number 2 on Likud's list for the 20th Knesset.Next is current Foreign Minister and Yisrael Beytenu Chairman Avigdor Liberman with 16 percent support. He is followed by former finance minister and Yesh Atid Chairman, Yair Lapid. Fourteen percent of respondents believe Lapid is best suited for the foreign minister position in the next government.Interestingly though, even among Yesh Atid voters, support for Livni as foreign minister is stronger than that of Lapid. Another possible candidate is Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States. He is currently running on Kulanu's ticket for the next Knesset. While no party has stated outright the requirement of the foreign affairs portfolio to join a coalition, it is clear most of the major parties do have natural candidates.

Moshe Kahlon, Israel's Next Finance Minister-Netanyahu meets Kulanu chairperson and promises him the post he asked for, a day before Rivlin announces the next prime minister.By Ido Ben-Porat, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/24/2015, 8:42 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met on Tuesday with Moshe Kahlon, chairperson of the newly formed Kulanu party, after a long cut-off in contact between the two - Kahlon was formerly a Likud minister under Netanyahu before leaving the party. In the meeting, the two agreed that Kahlon would receive his request to be appointed Finance Minister in the coalition government Netanyahu is busily trying to form. The post was previously held by Yesh Atid chairperson Yair Lapid. The agreement comes a day before President Reuven Rivlin is to announce the next prime minister, formally sealing Netanyahu's victory after he outpaced Labor by a wide margin of 30 mandates to 24. Netanyahu has already secured the support of a full 67 MKs, well surpassing the 61 seat majority required to form a coalition.Earlier on Tuesday Netanyahu met with Yisrael Beytenu chairperson Avigdor Liberman.Liberman said "it was a good meeting, nothing was promised to me." He has asked to be named Defense Minister, although he hasn't made clear if the demand will be a make-or-break condition.According to Channel 2, if Liberman's party - which only has six seats - is given two ministerial positions, he is likely to give the second post to Sofa Landver instead of Orly Levi-Abekasis, despite her being on the second spot of the party list.Netanyahu met with Jewish Home chairperson Naftali Bennett on Monday, with party members saying "before we speak about joining the government, we want to make sure it will truly be a nationalist government, a rightist government and not a leftist government."Bennett demanded the NGO Bill, which targets foreign-funded NGOs conducting activities against Israel, as a basic requirement for his party to join, as well as the Jewish State Bill and the "North Plan" his party has created to increase employment in the nation's north. The coalition negotiations are to take place in the Knesset building in Jerusalem, in contrast to how the Likud party has in recent years held the negotiations at Kfar Hamakabiya in Ramat Gan.Likud explained that the decision was meant to cut costs required to hold the negotiations, and to shorten the process.

'Everyone in Vanuatu Loves Israel'-Israeli aid workers went to remote islands to help locals in aftermath of Cyclone Pam, and made a surprising find: they love Israel.By Ari Yashar-First Publish: 3/25/2015, 2:13 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

An IsraAID disaster assistance team recently ended its first visit to the remote islands of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean, where they helped locals recover from the massive damage caused by Cyclone Pam. While there they learned something surprising - the islanders love Israel. The Israeli team, together with Tongoa parliament representative MP John Amos and a team of local volunteers, distributed over 40 tons of rice, flour and drinking water to residents of the Tongoa and Mataso islands in Vanuatu.Members of the team found that "everyone here loves Israel," noting that the reaction they got from locals learning they were from Israel was a pleasant surprise. In one island village they met David, a man who lost his entire house and had his water tank polluted by the storm damage, who was moved upon learning the team was from Israel. The crew reports he picked up a damaged book from his ruined living room, excitedly pointing to a page mentioning "light through the darkness," a scriptural reference to the Jewish people being a "light unto the nations" by holding a high standard of behavior and justice. The situation on the remote island of Tongoa was certainly encapsulated by the words "darkness," with the entire island still without clean water, food, medicine, and electricity, as schools, homes and crops were all destroyed.IsraAID left the island promising to return with more supplies, which it plans to bring to other remote islands of Vanuatu that were hard hit by the cyclone. In the coming days a third crew is to leave Israel, and will include medical and psycho-social staff as well as a water engineer. While in Tongoa, the chief of a small village broke down in tears as he described to the Israeli crew "it’s been ten days since the disaster, and these are the first supplies we have received."The village contains 42 households without any road access - after the storm, only four structures remain standing. Residents lined up excitedly to receive aid from the team.Other villages on the islands of Tongoa and Mataso were in the same dire situation, and IsraAID's team traveled to 12 villages and all eight schools on the islands to distribute aid. All the schools were completely destroyed. In the village of Kurumambe they met the family of Jennifer Daniel and her four children, between the ages of one and nine.Despite having lost their home and the school the children attended, IsraAID mission head Yotam Polizer remarked how inspiring their positive attitude was."Despite everything that happened to them, Jennifer was proudly explaining to us how she protected her children underneath a white plastic cover. Our team was amazed by people’s resilience and strength," noted Polizer.
