All eyes on the presidents-Rivlin’s consultations ahead of coalition-building, and Obama’s critique of the PM, make headlines in the Israeli press-By Marissa Newman March 22, 2015, 2:01 pm 2-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Though an ugly election season is officially over, the ceaseless disputes between political parties and the diplomatic crisis with the United States are relentlessly dominating headlines in Sunday’s Hebrew newspapers. In the spotlight are the US and Israeli presidents, with President Reuven Rivlin poised to consult with the Israeli factions on coalition-building, and President Barack Obama’s rebuke for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted.Yedioth Ahronoth reports that Rivlin will begin his rounds on Sunday to collect party heads’ the recommendations for the premiership, but notes that Netanyahu is likely to be nominated. Rivlin will formally announce the results on Wednesday, it reports. Still, an unnamed Likud official tells the paper the negotiations are expected to be “longer and more difficult than expected.”Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett and Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman are expected to spar over the defense and foreign ministries, the report said. Meanwhile, Kulanu leader Moshe Kahlon is demanding that his party receive the finance, internal security, and welfare ministries, as well as the chairmanship of the Knesset Finance Committee. But sources in the Likud party said that having Kahlon govern both the treasury and the Finance Committee would not be fair, since his representative in the committee would approve Kahlon’s budget without full consideration.Over in Haaretz, the paper more explicitly notes that “in light of the results [of the election], it’s clear that 61 MKs will recommend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the president.” Like Yedioth, the paper writes that Netanyahu is likely to encounter difficulties in assembling a coalition.“The political parties are examining the opportunities to create political alliances, like that after the last election between Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett, which forced Netanyahu to bring the Jewish Home into the coalition,” it reports. The paper notes that Kulanu’s Yoav Galant and the Jewish Home’s Ayelet Shaked are expected to fight over the internal security portfolio, while Shas and Jewish Home are thought to go head-to-head over the religious affairs portfolio. Liberman wants defense, welfare, and immigration absorption, and United Torah Judaism wants the Health Ministry and the Finance Committee.Haaretz also leads with Obama’s interview with the Huffington Post on Saturday, in which the president maintained that the US believes Netanyahu is opposed to a Palestinian state, and said the prime minister’s anti-Arab remarks on election day put Israel’s democracy in jeopardy.“From Obama’s remarks, it’s clear he was not convinced by the clarifications Netanyahu tried to issue in the past few days, whether in interviews with the US media or in the telephone conversation between the two on Thursday,” Haaretz notes.Israel Hayom leads with the Likud response to Obama’s interview, namely that the US president was harping on Netanyahu’s remarks to deflect attention away from the Iranian nuclear deal.“In Jerusalem, they are ‘very concerned’ about the US’s race to a deal with Iran. The assessment in Israel is that Obama is really ‘rushing to a deal.’ Right now, in Israel there is an understanding that sources in the international community will try to pressure Israel on the negotiations with the Palestinians to divert the conversation away from the bad deal with Iran,” the report said.Columnist Boaz Bismuth writes that Obama, not Netanyahu, is responsible for the diplomatic crisis between the two allies.“Could it be that President Obama, who is still trapped in the old and incorrect assumption that the Palestinian problem is the key to the solution of the entire Middle East (as if the Iranian nuclear program, the Islamic State, the collapse of Iraq, Yemen and Syria, the wars of the Shiites and Sunnis are advancing because the Palestinian dream has not come to fruition) is the one responsible for harming the ties? Did someone dare to think that it might be Obama?” he writes.“Barack Obama has very strange foreign policies: he likes to embrace his rivals and hurt his friends. That’s how he is. Ask our Arab neighbors in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. As an aside, this hasn’t brought him any great success. Truthfully, after six years in the White House, Obama is still seeking his first foreign policy success.”Over in Haaretz, pundits continue to lament the result of the election, but columnist Gideon Levy congratulates Netanyahu for being “the first Israeli prime minister to tell the truth.”“Now comes the man who is considered a bluffer, and only he tells the fateful, historic truth: there will be no Palestinian state. Not during his term, which now seems eternal. And not after it, because by then it will be too late. The end of negotiations, the end of games. No more shuttle diplomacy, Quartets, emissaries, processes, outlines, mediators and plans. That’s it; it will not happen. It had no chance from the very beginning. In Israel, there was not one single prime minister – including the two Nobel Peace Prize laureates – who intended for one second to let a Palestinian state be established. But the bluff of the century was convenient for everyone. Now Netanyahu has put an end to it.”He continues: “If an honest leader like Netanyahu had arisen years ago, we Israelis would have known, the Palestinians would have known, and so would the whole world: it will not be. Then it would have been possible to deal with other solutions, instead of wasting time cheating, time in which hatred only grew and blood spilled for nothing. We could have begun long ago to think of alternatives to the two-state solution – and there’s only one: one state.

51 MKs recommend Netanyahu, as president ends first day of meetings-24 members of Zionist Union back Herzog for premiership; McCain says Obama should get over his ‘temper tantrum’ on Israel-By Marissa Newman March 22, 2015, 2:04 pm - the times of israel

President Reuven Rivlin on Sunday began his consultations with party representatives on the formation of a governing coalition.Rivlin said that Israel underwent a “tempestuous and passion-filled” election campaign, and that “now is the time to begin the process of mending and healing Israeli society.”Arab MKs demanded that the president force an apology from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his remarks on election day, when a statement from the prime minister warned Arab citizens were voting “in droves.” Arab lawmakers also said they would ask Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to try the prime minister for racism. The president denounced the prime minister’s “hurtful” remarks, but rebuked the Arab Joint List party for likening Zionism to the Islamic State, comments he said were “unacceptable.”Meanwhile, after Obama berated Netanyahu for his rejection of the two-state solution on Saturday night, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro said that Washington had not yet made a decision about changing its policy regarding Israel, but warned that recent comments by Netanyahu on the peace process were “confusing” and raised doubts about Israel’s true intentions.

20:23-Jewish Democrats demand apology from Iowa’s Steve King-Some Jewish Democrats demand an apology from US Rep. Steve King of Iowa for saying that American Jews “can be Democrats first and Jews second.”King, a conservative Republican who is important to his party’s potential presidential candidates — in part because of his influence in Iowa, the first caucus state — was asked Friday by Boston Herald Radio about Democrats who had boycotted the speech to Congress in early March by Netanyahu.“I don’t understand how Jews in America can be Democrats first and Jewish second and support Israel along the line of just following their president,” he said. The National Jewish Democratic Council “condemned” the remarks in a statement.“For anyone, let alone an elected official, to actively belittle the hundreds of thousands of American Jews who vote for Democratic candidates is beyond the pale,” the council’s chairman, Greg Rosenbaum, says. “Rep. King is essentially stating that we aren’t Jewish enough for him. How dare he. We demand, and deserve, an apology at once.”“I don’t need Congressman Steve King questioning my religion or my politics,” writes Israel, who has headed fundraising for congressional Democrats in the last two elections. “I demand an apology from him and repudiation from GOP.”King replies, also on Twitter, that “real men make such requests face to face,” which prompted Israel to call King a “meshugeneh,” or crazy.– JTA

19:28-Israeli team heads to France to discuss Iran-Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz goes to France with National Security Adviser Yossi Cohen and several other experts to consult with French officials on the ongoing nuclear talks with Iran, Reuters reports.Steinitz is quoted as saying that he may meet with other European leaders as well.“This is an effort to prevent a [nuclear] deal that is bad and full of loopholes, or at least… to succeed in closing or amending some of these loopholes,” he says. The visit comes ahead of the March 31 deadline for the negotiations.

19:10-Singer harassed at airport for left-wing views-Singer Achinoam Nini writes on her Facebook page that she was threatened by strangers at Ben Gurion Airport for her left-wing views. She says that upon her return from Italy, someone shouted: “There’s Achinoam Nini! Hater of Israel, we’ll deal with her like Geffen,” referring to an attack on writer and artist Yehonatan Geffen at his home several days ago.
“Welcome to the nightmare we’ve woken up to,” she writes.)

18:52-French diplomat pans ‘unrealistic’ Israeli position on Iran-An unnamed French diplomat criticizes Israel’s position on the Iranian nuclear program as “unrealistic,” and says Netanyahu went “too far” in his Congress address on the issue.“Israel has marginalized itself. In November 2013, we were working with them and they played the game. They didn’t take unrealistic positions,” the diplomat tells Reuters.“But here they have gone too far. We told them to play their part so they could influence a final accord, but they have taken unrealistic positions.”

18:38-Rivlin urges broad coalition-In his meeting with the United Torah Judaism party earlier today, Rivlin asks the representatives if they would be part of the coalition if it were a wider government than anticipated.“The political issues and the pressure that our best friends in Europe and the US will exert require a broad coalition in the upcoming Knesset,” the president says.MK Moshe Gafni tells Rivlin in response that his  party would not be willing to sit with certain political parties, and said that if those unnamed parties were to join the coalition, United Torah Judaism would head to the opposition.

17:13-UTJ recommends Netanyahu-United Torah Judaism recommends Netanyahu for prime minister, bringing the total number of MKS behind his recommendations to 51.The Zionist Union is the only party so far to back Herzog, while the Joint [Arab] List abstained from recommending either candidate.
Rivlin wraps up the meetings for the day.Tomorrow he will meet with representatives of Yesh Atid, Yisrael Beytenu, Meretz, and Kulanu.

17:01-Dermer defends PM on two-state solution-Israeli Ambassador to Washington Ron Dermer defends Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying in a Sunday morning interview that the Obama administration misinterpreted Netanyahu’s pre-election statements and that “the prime minister is not against a two-state solution with a demilitarized Palestinian state.”Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Dermer argues that “things have changed” – but that the change is in the diminishing security situation in the region and the fact that the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has maintained his alliance with Hamas.— Rebecca Shimoni-Stoil

16:12-Rivlin says 45 MKs backed Netanyahu so far-After meeting with Likud, Zionist Union, Jewish Home, and Shas, Rivlin says 45 Knesset members have recommended Netanyahu for the premiership, and 24 nominate Herzog. He will meet with the United Torah Judaism party shortly.“As a Jerusalemite who didn’t excel in math, to date 45 MKs have recommended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 24 for Zionist Union chairman Isaac Herzog,” he says, according to Ynet.

15:55-PM said to be eyeing Likud MK as UN envoy-A Knesset channel reporter writes on Twitter that Netanyahu is slated to offer an unnamed senior Likud member the position of ambassador to the United Nations, which is currently held by Ron Prosor.

14:54-Obama remarks ‘carry heavy strategic price’ — Oren-Kulanu MK-to-be and former ambassador to the US Michael Oren says Obama’s critique of Israeli democracy “strategically damages Israel’s standing in the world.”

14:34-6 men held for breaking into London synagogue-Six men are arrested after they forced their way into a synagogue in north London. The men, who were drunk, tried to enter a synagogue in the largely Haredi neighborhood of Stamford Hill late on Saturday night, the BBC reports.Synagogue security staff removed the men, Metropolitan Police tell the BBC.“The incident is being treated as an anti-Semitic incident, due to remarks made by one of the group,” a police spokesman tells the BBC. “However, there is nothing to suggest that it was a planned or targeted attack.”A video of the incident shows around 10 members of the synagogue having to defend themselves with chairs and makeshift clubs as the gang attempts to enter a room in the synagogue, the London-based Jewish Chronicle reports. The gang is seen in the video threatening the worshippers who are preventing them from entering the room.
Police tell the BBC they increased patrols in the neighborhood.– JTA

14:33-Palestinian envoy urges Obama to push peace-Afif Safieh, roving Palestinian ambassador for special missions, writes an open letter to President Obama, urging him to push a peace deal on Israel. He writes: “Mr President, I suspect you would be surprised by the massive support you would receive, domestically and internationally, if you were to link US aid to Israel with US advice. In short: if you were to reconcile American power and American principles. Responding to the Palestinian cry for freedom out of captivity and bondage is crucial for US credibility, respectability and – I dare say – lovability.“With a single telephone call in 1956, President Eisenhower had David Ben Gurion withdraw from the occupied Sinai – and during a Presidential election year. Compared to Ben Gurion, Netanyahu looks like a lamb.“We still have two more years. If the international will was to have primacy over the Israeli national whim, a territory that was occupied in 1967 in six days can also be evacuated in six days, so that the Israelis can rest on the seventh, and we can finally engage on the fascinating journey of state-building and economic recovery.“Can we really witness another Eisenhower moment? Yes, Mr President, I believe we can.”

14:08-Arab MKs to urge prosecution of PM-Rivlin meets with representatives of the Joint (Arab) List, who say they will not recommend any candidate for the premiership.Arab lawmakers say they will ask the attorney general to prosecute the prime minister for remarks he made on election day warning that Arab voters were turning out in droves. The president denounces the “harsh and hurtful” remarks by both Jewish and Arab candidates during the election season.“There is no place for such remarks, not during the elections and certainly not after them,” he said. “I call on everyone, Jews and Arabs alike, to refrain from mutual incitement and provocation.”He rebukes the Arab list for likening Zionism to the Islamic State several weeks ago in an official statement.Meretz MK Issawi Freij calls on Rivlin to compel Netanyahu to apologize for his election day statement about Arab voters.

US Ambassador to Israel Laments 'Confusing' Situation-US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro attempts damage control for the White House after Obama says he's 're-evaluating' US stance on Israel.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 9:26 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro did damage control for the White House on Sunday morning, stating to Israeli media that US President Barack Obama's remarks indicating the drop of US support for Israel were due to the "confusing situation" of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's flip-flopping remarks on peace talks."This confusing situation raises doubts about Israel's real policy," Shapiro stated in an interview on Army Radio's "Good Morning Israel" show. "The question we're asking ourselves is: how can we move forward with the two-state solution? We look forward to working with the new government [on this] when it is formed."Shapiro, meanwhile, blamed Iran for the lack of a nuclear deal - not Netanyahu's insistence that the deal endangers thousands of lives as Iran builds nuclear weapons."The reason why there is still no agreement with Iran is because Iran has not yet made the necessary decisions," he insisted.Last week, Obama stated in a Huffington Post interview that US is "evaluating" its stance on Israel after Netanyahu said just prior to elections that he would not continue to pursue a two-state solution, as the international community insists."We're going to make sure, regardless of disagreements we have on policy, that our military and intelligence cooperation to keep the Israeli people safe continues and that cooperation also helps the American people stay safe," he said."But we are going to continue to insist that, from our point of view, the status quo is unsustainable. And that while taking into complete account Israel's security, we can't just in perpetuity maintain the status quo, expand settlements. That's not a recipe for stability in the region."Asked whether he believed Netanyahu was "serious about a Palestinian state," Obama answered bluntly that "we take him at his word when he said that it wouldn't happen during his prime ministership, and so that's why we've got to evaluate what other options are available to make sure that we don't see a chaotic situation in the region.

Khamenei Agrees with 'Death to America' Slogan-Iran's Supreme Leader rejects Obama's call to reach a nuclear agreement, says America is bullying Iran.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 3/22/2015, 4:46 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Just two days after President Barack Obama urged the Iranian people to take advantage of an “historic opportunity” to resolve the nuclear issue, an Iranian crowd on Saturday chanted “Death to America” - and the country’s Supreme Leader agreed.According to Reuters, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke in northeastern Iran, where he accused the U.S. of using economic pressure and "bullying" to try to turn his countrymen against Islamic rule.Khamenei, who has the last word on all matters of state, reiterated in his speech that Tehran would not be pressured into giving in to Western demands in the negotiations with major powers.Khamenei denounced the sanctions and what he described as the "arrogant" Western powers, blaming them and regional players for the halving of oil prices since last June, which has further squeezed Iran's economy. At that point, according to Reuters, a man in the audience shouted "Death to America", to which the Supreme Leader responded, "Of course yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure. They insist on putting pressure on our dear people's economy. What is their goal? Their goal is to put the people against the system."Khamenei challenged the message to Iranians by Obama, in which the president said the nuclear talks represented the best opportunity in decades to pursue a different relationship between the two countries. He dismissed Obama's assertion that there were people in Iran who stood against a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue."This is a lie. There is no one in Iran who doesn't want the nuclear issue to be resolved, and resolved through negotiations. What the Iranian people don't want is imposition and bullying from America," he said, according to Reuters."The other side says 'Let's come and negotiate and you accept every detail of what we say.' ... Neither our leaders nor our negotiating team nor the people of Iran, who are behind them, will accept this," added Khamenei.“Death to America” is often chanted by the crowds at rallies in Iran. In fact, the  slogan has been chanted for more than three decades at state events, including Friday prayers. While there were calls to refrain from the chants, in view of Iran's attempts to convince the world that it has become more moderate, Iran’s clerics rejected the calls, saying the slogan “reflects the Islamic doctrine of resistance to imperialism, and also symbolizes Iran's strength."The Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) recently made clear that the United States “is still the great Satan and the number one enemy of the (Islamic) revolution, and the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation...will never allow the dignity and independence of the Islamic homeland to be threatened and harmed by the will of the enemies.”Khamenei himself has in the past referred to the United States  as “Satan”, claiming that the United States is “the greatest violator of human rights in the world.”

Obama to Iranians: An 'Historic Opportunity' to End Nuke Issue-In a message to Iranians in honor of Nowruz, Obama says this is the "best opportunity in decades" to pursue a different relationship.By Ben Ariel-First Publish: 3/20/2015, 4:46 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

President Barack Obama is telling Iranians that this year is an “historic opportunity” to resolve the issue surrounding their country’s nuclear program. In a message to the people of Iran in honor of their New Year Nowruz, Obama said this is the "best opportunity in decades" to pursue a different relationship between the United States and Iran."This moment may not come again soon. I believe that our nations have an historic opportunity to resolve this issue peacefully - an opportunity we should not miss," the American President says.Referring to the ongoing talks between Iran and the West as an end of the month deadline approaches, Obama said "the days and weeks ahead will be critical. Our negotiations have made progress, but gaps remain. And there are people, in both our countries and beyond, who oppose a diplomatic resolution.""My message to you - the people of Iran - is that, together, we have to speak up for the future we seek," he said."This year, we have the best opportunity in decades to pursue a different future between our countries," added Obama, who added that Iran's leaders have a choice between keeping their country on a path of isolation and sanctions or putting it on the road to more trade and investment with the rest of the world."This is what’s at stake today. And this moment may not come again soon. I believe that our nations have an historic opportunity to resolve this issue peacefully - an opportunity we should not miss," he concluded. Ongoing talks between Iran and the West are geared towards turning an interim 2013 deal into a permanent agreement.Under the interim deal, Iran committed to limit its uranium enrichment to five percent and is gradually winning access to $4.2 billion of its oil revenues frozen abroad and some other sanctions relief. Talks to reach a permanent deal have continuously stalled and two deadlines for a final deal have been missed. Experts say that the new deadline - March 31 for a framework deal, July 1 for the full deal - has to be met.The sides met in Switzerland again this week, but Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, on Wednesday played down the chances of reaching a nuclear agreement in this round of talks, hinting the negotiations will likely have to continue into next week or resume then after a break.

Israel busts West Bank Hamas cell planning bomb attacks-Six suspects arrested for amassing explosive components, enlisting operatives in Nablus-By Times of Israel staff March 22, 2015, 1:29 pm

Israeli security personnel arrested six Palestinian men suspected of belonging to a Hamas cell in the West Bank that was plotting to carry out bombings in Israel, the Shin Bet security service said Sunday.A joint operation by the Shin Bet security service, Israel Police and IDF uncovered the cell in the West Bank city of Qalqilya and found dozens of pounds of sulfur and several grams of mercury fulminate, components for explosives, the security agency said in a statement. There was no indication of when the arrests took place, but announcements typically come a month or more after arrest operations. The members of the cell told Israeli authorities that they were drafted into Hamas’s armed wing while in Jordan, underwent training in the Gaza Strip, and were dispatched to the West Bank to carry out attacks and enlist other operatives, according to the Shin Bet.The six suspects arrested by Israeli authorities were named as Abdullah Mehmed Yussuf Zitawi, 26, a resident of Jama’in; Walid Muhammad Mahmoud Abu Zina, 26, of Jenin; Malek Raed Farouk Ghanem, 22, of Amatin; Rejaa Khaled Rejaa Sabara, 22, of Brukin, Jasser Muhammad Sayed Abu Omar, 42, of Jama’in, and Baha al-Din Fathi Mahmoud Suwan, 33, of Amatin. The suspects allegedly converted an apartment in Nablus into a bomb factory, which had components for building shrapnel bombs. Some explosive materials were confiscated by Israeli authorities. The arrests were the latest in a string of terror sting operations in the West Bank by Israeli forces.Last month, the Shin Bet said it busted two Palestinian cells whose members allegedly fired on Israeli soldiers and civilians in the West Bank.
