RABBI CHAIM RICHMAN AND YITZCHAK REUVEN ON WHY KERRY IS A HYPOCRIT.AND WHY WHEN JORDAN AND EGYPT CONTROLLED THE ARABS.THEY WERE NOT CALLED OCCUPIERS LIKE ISRAEL IS ACCUSED OF TODAY.

FROM TEMPLE TALK WITH Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Chaim Richman  TRUTH ABOUT KERRY AND ARAB-ISLAMIC MURDERERS.transcript-oct 20,15

The connection connection is very very obvious why all the sudden they have to burn down Joseph still it's the same logic as what's going on with the Temple Mount because because justice to as well as the tomb of the patriarchs as well as the Temple Bar the three places that are recorded in the Torah as being purchased by the children of his real in this land and they are the very crux of the matter they are very epitome of the covenant that we have and the sovereignty and the ownership of this land before the eyes of the whole world and that's why they have to they have to contradict that but again I start talking with the whole story about how it's always about blame the Jews and therefore when these things are not reported when they are reported with a reported in a very minor way or we're over the implication by the world press is always about how israel is killing the palestinian israel's killing them even though they happen to be palestinians that are that are in the middle of murdering jews by nice by bullet by car by whatever and we accidentally and we killed them because they're attacking us right the idea is it's all our fault everything is your fault in some of the logic is that this is what we deserve because this is where we are because its contested because we are occupiers and all that business

even though there is no Palestinian nation in this never was a Palestinian land it can't possibly be that we are occupying Palestine because there weren't any palestinian there was no Palestinian land that we were as a matter of fact Judea and Samaria and Gaza were occupied from 1948 to 1967 Judea and Samaria was occupied by Jordan and Gaza was occupied by each of those of the occupiers but nobody was complaining been about Palestinian rights nobody was talking then about the poor display displaced Palestinians and how they are refugees nobody was talking about it then because it wasn't Israel. anyway the idea is unfortunately this this mentality of blaming the jews and taking responsibility everything is our fault that we exist is so poisonous that is plenty of Jews who also who also subscribe to not only take out with his own no god but when I can change the status quo and the Temple Mount but you have these rabbis who upon in blogs and articles and any statements that the Jewish people should not be going to the temple and its totally ignorant and obnoxious and they're talking about how the position of the tour is that we shouldn't be going to the top of my head that we those Jews who risked it all and go to the temple mount in the name of all of israel in purity after having expertly mastered the complex Jewish laws about going to the temple and yes knowing exactly where to trade these rebels are saying that we are the ones who are causing the muslims 2 hate us and want to kill us because we're going to the tournament spray and that kind of statement from a rabbi is the height of absolute moral and intellectual bankruptcy and total ignorance that a rabbi could say that Jews who go to the temple mount are endangering the people of Israel. what does this say we all like gonna crawl into a hole and cower and cover up because maybe the arabs gonna try to kill it because we're jews because actually that's what they do because we're living as jews. if we can't live as jews if we can't do what we are what we are ent rusted to do if we cannot continue to bring the light into the world and to stand up for what it means to be a just and then what's it all worth what a total twisting of everything that it means to be a Jew and everything the Torah is all about that's what we're facing today. but again this is all on the backdrop of two amazing points of that are that are that are concentrically dissecting serendipitous perpendicular a manner that is partial left which is all about from coming forth and the month which is all about the deep rooted movement towards the dedication of the future temple it's all happening to you see what i'm saying it's all the timing is is exquisite and the whole thing with overall coming out into the world know is all because I was looking for someone to take responsibility for Humanity it didn't work and still no and that's why I'm appears on the world stage at this particular time because God is sick and tired of all the shenanigans of everything that went on from saddam's time and the flood and the generation of the tower and God is saying will someone please rise up and say I will teach humanity that there is a God. I will preserve that legacy that there's a reason for life and that's what I mean is I was one of the most unbelievable thing with less about it I was learning that the builders of the Tower of Babel were actually it was like the opposite of the beta mcdyess that that was like their idea of the Holy Temple they would like to try again to steal the chef and they were like that was like the Torah portion that we're reading this week and that begins in Genesis 12 and Genesis twelve-hour shifts to our goal for yourself from your land from your relatives from your father's house to the land that I will show you like you say everything behind us now I'm starting over again I brought you Adam I brought you those generations I prefer the people who brought you the flood well I'm starting again with you and I will make of you a great nation I will bless you and make your name great and you should be a blessing now I think it says here attention John Kerry I will bless those who bless you and him who curses you I will curse and all the families of the US jobless themselves by you so here you have this this Heinz ketchup here to who is this lurch right who is saying that he wants israel's guarantees in writing but here I have it in writing I have the Torah and my hands that is so ironic I have it in writing and you know it really just burns my blood about about the things that he he's been saying the past week right he says we welcome both israel's and joins commitment to continued maintenance of status quo at the Temple Mount and don't forget the quotation that we read from him earlier in the broadcast just give it to you one more time because it's so inspiring and so beautiful and so patriotic and so much of what America stands for the freedom to professor and practice one's beliefs is the birthright of every human being .the other thing that mister birthright of every human being ketchup hairdo said was you says ok he says I gotta find it's really important she says okay so he says we welcome both Israel and Jewish community continued maintenance of access code then he says we are not seeking a new change or outsiders to come in I don't think Israel Jordan wants that and we're not proposing it what we need is clarity and who are the outsiders are we the Jewish people the outsiders this is the place of the temple. the place where our forefathers prayed it is totally usurped destroyed ended and and historically bastardized by Islam and and and the muslims these are the same folks who brought us a couple of days ago this week that burning once again the ransacking the torching of the tomb of Joseph in shame in nablus. ok when they state started with their intifada war back way back when in 2004 they burnt down Joseph's Tomb to the ground and now once again after having beaten a group of Jewish worshippers who were and I quote unauthorized to be praying there the palestinian authority policeman fogs terrorists trained and financed by the CIA beat these Jews who came to prove it and they set Joseph's Tomb on fire in the pictures we place to this so horrible right they're always talking about and the PAA accords by the way with Israel about mutual respect of the holy places and all this kind of thing but as I mentioned in the video the brief idea that we made on the Temple Mount this week on the eight hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the earlier but I mentioned in that video the connection connection is very very obvious why all the sudden they have to burn down Joseph still it's the same logic as what's going on with the Temple Mount because because justice to as well as the tomb of the patriarchs as well as the Temple Bar the three places that are recorded in the Torah as being purchased by the children of his real in this land and they are the very crux of the matter they are very epitome of the covenant that we have and the sovereignty and the ownership of this land before the eyes of the whole world and that's why they have to they have to contradict that but again I start talking with the whole story about how it's always about blame the Jews and therefore when these things are not reported when they are reported with a reported in a very minor way or we're over the implication by the world press is always about how israel is killing the palestinian israel's killing them even though they happen to be palestinians that are that are in the middle of murdering jews by KNIFE by bullet by car by whatever and we accidentally and we killed them because they're attacking us right.the idea is it's all our fault everything is your fault in some of the logic is that this is what we deserve because this is where we are because its contested because we are occupiers and all that business even though there is no Palestinian nation.

ITS just so disturbing how people could be really totally unaware of what's going on and what it means also for the whole world as the specter of jihad basically jihad by immigration jihad by legislation is taking over the entire free world just a month ago we're all talking about the agreement between United States and European nations and Iran which I think President Obama is employed at that was gonna bring world peace and I think there's a connection here I don't think there's a disconnect I think that that was simply the you know the the preview of what's happening now and and will continue to happen in his direction as as as I could say Obama opened at the gates of hell with that deal and it's gonna be a big price to be paid for it right now the Jewish people are paying the price here in the land of israel but but that price is becoming more and more clear and scandalously clear that the United States ruined Libya and the same thing is happening in Syria and its all the policy of this open arms of the of the Arab Spring which has turned to basically inside the gates of hell so this is these are in separate isolated incidents and even though you know they keep referring to the to the terrorists to the people who denied and and shoot and then and run over to use here as as isolated as spontaneous as a lone wolf lone wolf there's absolutely no no no here there is a common denominator and that is the incitement that is being pumped out every day by the palestinian authority by Hamas by the israeli by the Islamic movement inside Israel and every day it's out there if you want to venture onto Arab language media social media you can see it there everything's translatable these days you can see it and when a thirteen year old kid sites go out with a knife and stabbed another 30 rock is not busy can't find a job it's not because he's frustrated with the occupation because there's so many settlements like not because he's too long of a wait to get to you know it's it's it's because he's been poisoned with this hatred of Jews from the day he was born 23 years ago is when they signed us since then the entire school system educational system media and and and mosques and every public institution in the palestinian authority has been built incitement and hatred and and dehumanization of Jews that is all is child knows and when he goes out with a knife today it's because he knows his family will be honored when he comes back dead or alive his family estate in the weather comes back dead or alive he will be a martyr in the eyes and in the palestinian compatriots and that the head of the palestinian authority hablas will praise him to no end for shedding His blood on behalf of who the hell knows what he said his blood on the glorification of death was reading a new ritual now among the palestinians of smelling you want to smell the blood of the martyrs the six just grows and grows by the way when they bury their martyrs they bury them along with soil from the temple mount how's that for the ultimate irony throw up right now take over please two minutes 46 look the fact is everything is perfect timing as we use these Torah portions about the emergency and promises that were made to him and his destiny really the name change that takes place in this distortion the covenant between the portions and the whole idea of preserving this legacy of the identity of God in the world. it's all that visiting the temple mount is actually getting smoother since those balconies or did the actual visited the temple has been going very well and again more and more people have been coming in accordance with Jewish law and reverence for the place to be seen there by God to pray there to exercise their right to pray once again despite all the violence despite everything that's been happening israel is still the safest place in the world and is no other place in the world that we'd like to be that we want to be that we want that we know we have to be in and we still want to encourage everyone more than ever to stand with Israel to come and visit and see for themselves what really is happening here what we are and what we are dealing with and to be part of the the blessing that Israel s go to your self be true to yourself as a land once in the land again the next time I get to let the hot 2 Mount Moriah the same command and I think the real meaning of less that is between you are between himself and what God created find who you really are meant to be and I think if we today stick with that they were going to be fine because we will break through to see through those debris to benefit aryan he was thrown into numerous ways to the God of Israel and that is the secret and that is the difference between those who was also on that simple thank you for being with us.Published on Oct 20, 2015

There Was Never A Country-Called Palestine

If you consider Palestine to be a "Sovereign" and "Independent" country that goes back through most of recorded history as many would have you to believe, then a few questions need to be answered:-When was it founded and by whom? What were its borders? What was its capital? Who was the President? What was its form of government? What were its major cities? What constituted the basis of its economy? Who was the Palestinian leader before Yasser Arafat? Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence, at that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation? What was the language of the country of Palestine? What was the prevalent religion of the country of Palestine? What was the name of its currency and what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary unit against the US dollar, German mark, GB pound, or Japanese yen on any particular date? And, finally, since there is no such country today, what caused its demise and when did it occur? IF these so-called "Palestinians" are anything but a generic collection of Arabs from all over the rest of the Arab world and if they really have a genuine ethnic identity that gives them right for self-determination, then why did they never try to become an independent and sovereign nation until Arabs suffered their devastating defeat in the Six Day War in 1967?

The Ten Commandments of Arab Lies

01-The "Palestinian People" have an historic connection to the land.-This is very interesting since there is no such thing as a "Palestinian People". When the Romans changed the name of Israel to Palestine, the people living there at the time were Jews, not Arabs. If there had been a "Palestinian People", which there never was, they would have been Jews.

02-The Palestinian People have been in the land from time immemorial.-For centuries pre-Israel Palestine was a forgotten, desolate wasteland inhabited by a remnant of Jews, along with some Christians and wandering Bedouins who certainly had no thought of a national identity of any kind.

03-There were no Jews in Palestine until Israel became a state in 1948.-The Romans officially banished the Jews from Israel (Palestine) in 135 CE. However, historical records show there was always a Jewish presence in the land. While many were scattered, other Jews simply moved out of harm's way until a less hostile power ruled the land. Jews were returning to what is now Israel well before 1948. Many left Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

04-Arabs and Jews lived in harmony before Israel became a state.-Throughout the centuries, Jews as well as Christians, living under Islamic rule suffered persecution and humiliation, the intensity of which was determined by the character of a particular Moslem ruler. As second-class citizens, there was never a "good time" for non-Muslims living under Islamic rule. Because of the way that most Islamic countries look down on non-Muslims, they are always considered second-class citizens and less than equal. Arabs have rarely lived in harmony with anyone if they were the majority.

05-The returning Jews displaced the Palestinian Arabs-The ancestors of most of the present-day Arab population migrated to the land after Jewish pioneers began to reclaim the land. They came from many different countries and were not original inhabitants of the land.

06-The Jews stole Arab land-Jews returning to the land settled on unclaimed, unoccupied land or bought land from absentee Arab landowners at outrageously high prices. This is a matter of record.

07-The Jews forced Arabs to flee Palestine-When Israel was declared a state in 1948, leaders from the surrounding Arab countries declared war on Israel and instructed the Arab civilians living in the land to flee until the Jews were annihilated. Israeli leaders, to no avail, urged the Arabs to stay. Property that they owned was abandoned.

08-The Jews caused the Arab refugee problem-If Arab countries would assimilate and care for the "Palestinian" refugees, as Israel did for their Jewish refugees, there would be no refugee problem. Instead they use the refugees as political pawns in their struggle against Israel. No Arab country that wants "Palestinian Arabs" in their country as they would rather use the "Palestinian Arabs" as pawns rather than assimilate them into their populations and bring peace to the Middle East.

09-Israel is the aggressor against defenseless Palestinians-In its brief history, Israel has had one war after another and each time they are blamed as the aggressor. The Arabs do not recognize the right of Israel to exist and are in a constant state of hostility against Israel. Their aim is to destroy Israel.

10-Jerusalem is holy to Muslims-While Jerusalem is mentioned over eight hundred times in the Bible, it is not mentioned one time in the Koran. Muslims have had little or no interest in Jerusalem until the Jewish presence in modern times.

Martyrs, martyrs, martyrs,... we want a million martyrs to march on Jerusalem.
-- Yasser Arafat, Leader of the PLO, 2002

We plan to eliminate the state of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian state. We will make life unbearable for Jews by psychological warfare and population explosion... We Palestinians will take over everything, including all of Jerusalem.
-- Yasser Arafat, Leader of the PLO

Peace for us means the destruction of Israel
-- Yasser Arafat, Leader of the PLO, 1980

The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism.
-- Zahir Muhsein, PLO executive committee member

We say our terror against America is blessed terror in order to put an end to suppression, in order for the United States to stop its support to Israel.
-- Osama Bin Laden, Leader of al-Qaeda

Every Muslim, from the moment they realize the distinction in their hearts, hates Americans, hates Jews and hates Christians. For as long as I can remember, I have felt tormented and at war, and have felt hatred and animosity for Americans.
-- Osama Bin Laden, Leader of al-Qaeda

Christians are infidels, enemies of Allah, his Messenger, and the believers.

10 Obvious Reasons Why Islam is NOT a Religion of Peace

This is an article from TheReligionOfPeace.com website that brings to light the truth about Islam.

01. 18,000 deadly terror attacks committed explicitly in the name of Islam in just the last ten years. (Other religions combined for perhaps a dozen or so).

02. Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, had people killed for insulting him or criticizing his religion. This included women. Muslims are told to emulate the example of Muhammad.

03. Muhammad said in many places that he has been "ordered by Allah to fight men until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger." In the last nine years of his life, he ordered no less than 65 military campaigns to do exactly that.Muhammad inspired his men to war with the basest of motives, using captured loot, sex and a gluttonous paradise as incentives. He beheaded captives, enslaved children and raped women captured in battle. Again, Muslims are told to emulate the example of Muhammad.

04. After Muhammad died, the people who lived with him, and knew his religion best, immediately fell into war with each other.Muhammad's favorite daughter, Fatima, and her husband, Ali (the second convert to Islam, who was raised like a son to Muhammad) fought a war against an army raised by Aisha, Muhammad's favorite wife - and one whom he had said was the "perfect woman."Not only was her husband, Ali, eventually murdered, but Fatima (who survived the early years at Mecca safe and sound) died of stress from the persecution of fellow Muslims only three months after her father died.Three of the first four Muslim rulers (caliphs) were murdered. All of them were among Muhammad's closest companions. The third caliph was killed by the son of the first. The fourth caliph was killed by the fifth, who subsequently poisoned one of Muhammad's two favorite grandsons. Muhammad's other grandson was later beheaded by the sixth caliph.Even these high profile killings barely do justice to the astonishing level of violence taking place at the time, in which tens of thousands of believers were slaughtered by Muhammad's companions and their children in the infighting and power struggles. Within 50 short years of Muhammad's death, even the Kaaba, which had stood for centuries under pagan religion, lay in ruins from internal Muslim war. And that's just the fate of those within the house of Islam!

05. Muhammad directed Muslims to wage war on other religions and bring them under submission to Islam. Within the first few decades following his death, his Arabian companions invaded and conquered Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and Zoroastrian lands.A mere 25 years after Muhammad's death, Muslim armies had captured land and people within the borders of over 28 modern countries outside of Saudi Arabia.

06. Muslims continued their Jihad against other religions for 1400 years, checked only by the ability of non-Muslims to defend themselves. To this day, not a week goes by that Islamic fundamentalists do not attempt to kill Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists explicitly in the name of Allah.None of these other religions are at war with each other.

07. Islam is the only religion that has to retain its membership by threatening to kill anyone who leaves. This is according to the example set by Muhammad.

08. Islam teaches that non-Muslims are less than fully human. Muhammad said that Muslims can be put to death for murder, but that a Muslim could never be put to death for killing a non-Muslim.

09. The Qur'an never once speaks of Allah's love for non-Muslims, but it speaks of Allah's cruelty toward and hatred of non-Muslims more than 500 times.

10. "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!" (The last words from the cockpit of Flight 93). Translated means "God is great". It is a common Arabic expression, used as both an informal expression of faith and as a formal declaration to show of love of Islam and hatred for all that is not.

I came to defend Israel,’ says immigrant cop who shot attackers-French-born policewoman who stopped stabbings at Tapuah Junction hailed as a hero for preventing ‘a big disaster’-By Times of Israel staff October 30, 2015, 5:55 pm

A young French immigrant serving in the Border Police was praised by commanders and local leaders on Friday after shooting two Palestinian assailants as they tried to stab her and a second policeman in the West Bank. The head of Samaria Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, who arrived at the scene and spoke with the corporal, said that the officer had told him: “This is why I came to Israel. To defend the nation.”The two men attempted to stab Cpl. A and her partner as they inspected vehicles at the Tapuah Junction. According to a police statement, the attackers arrived at the intersection on a motorcycle, dismounted and advanced towards the officers with knives in hand.Dagan called Cpl. A “a hero” for preventing “a big disaster.”“I realized that if I hesitated for a second the policeman beside me would no longer be alive,” Cpl. A told the press afterwards. “I didn’t think twice. I cocked my weapon and shot them.”One of the Palestinians was killed while the other was critically injured, according to police. The Border Policemen were not hurt.Border Police commander Uzi Levi, head of forces in Judea and Samaria, commended the officers’ actions, saying they responded with level-headed professionalism to end the incident “quickly and without casualties.”

Police shoot one Palestinian, run over second in Ramallah clashes-Rioter shot by troops while throwing firebomb; second attacker hit by police jeep as he attempts to stab officer-By Times of Israel staff and Judah Ari Gross October 30, 2015, 4:36 pm 5

Two Palestinians were moderately wounded Friday afternoon during fierce clashes with Border Police in the West Bank city of Ramallah.A police unit shot and wounded a Palestinian who was about to throw a Molotov cocktail. As medical officers dispensed first aid to the wounded Palestinian, a second Palestinian approached the first responders with a sharp object in his hand. Identifying a clear danger to the officers on the scene, the commander in a jeep ordered his driver to get closer in order to prevent a stabbing, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. The driver struck the second Palestinian, wounding him (footage here). Both Palestinians were moderately hurt, and no Israeli forces incurred any injuries, the police said. The incident came shortly after two people were injured in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem.According to police, an Israeli man in his 20s sustained moderate injuries when he was stabbed near the Ammunition Hill light rail station by a 23-year-old resident of Kfar Akeb in East Jerusalem. A second man was injured by police gunfire when security forces tried to subdue the attacker, who was shot and critically wounded.“From our initial investigation we believe that a terrorist armed with a knife arrived at the station and stabbed a civilian, injuring him. He then attempted to stab another civilian, but did not succeed,” Samri said.“Light rail guards who were on the scene, other civilians and Border Police officers who were nearby subdued the terrorist. As a result of the gunfire, an additional civilian was injured, with a gunshot wound to the leg,” Samri said. The victim with the stab wounds was treated on the scene by paramedics before being taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center. According to Magen David Adom, he was in stable condition. The second victim was lightly to moderately injured by the gunfire, MDA said. The incident was the first in Jerusalem since October 17 when a Palestinian teenager tried to stab Border Police officers in Armon Hanatziv, and the second attack of the day Friday.Earlier, two Palestinian men attempted to stab a group of Border Police officers at the Tapuah Junction in the West Bank and were shot by security forces. One died of his wounds and the other was in critical condition, according to police. The Border Police troops were not hurt in the attempted attack. The incidents were the latest in over 60 separate attacks against Israeli civilians and security forces over the past month. Ten Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in a spate of terror attacks by mainly Palestinian assailants since October 1.

Palestinian rioters clash with troops on Gaza border-At least 20 protesters said hurt after attacking soldiers with rocks, Molotov cocktails in several locations-By Times of Israel staff October 30, 2015, 4:24 pm 1

In what has become a weekly occurrence, violent Palestinian protests were reported along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip on Friday afternoon, following the end of Muslim prayers.Riots that included the use of firebombs, rock throwing and tire burning were reported by Israeli security forces in several locations. The army said troops were acting to disperse the demonstrators.Palestinian officials said at least 20 people were hurt, most of them from tear gas.Egged on by Hamas rulers, the protestors have been routinely demonstrating near the Gaza border in solidarity with West Bank Palestinians, and have broken through the border fence with Israel on several occasions.During a visit to the IDF’s Gaza Division head quarters in the Western Negev last week, military officials told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the security situation at the Israel-Gaza border was “under control.”The riots came as security forces also clashed with Palestinian rioters in the West Bank. At least two Palestinians were wounded in confrontations with Border Police in Ramallah on Friday afternoon, while two Israelis were wounded in an earlier stabbing attack in Jerusalem.

Abbas to meet ICC prosecutor as terror attacks persist-At The Hague, PA president, Fatou Bensouda to discuss ‘grave Israeli escalation,’ according to Palestinian officials-By AFP and Times of Israel staff October 30, 2015, 3:09 pm 6

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet on Friday with ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda at The Hague, Palestinian officials said, amid the current wave of Palestinian terror against Israeli civilians and security forces in Israel and across the West Bank.It will be Abbas’s first meeting with the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court since the Palestinian Authority sparked controversy by joining the tribunal in January, an official with the Palestinian mission in The Hague told AFP.Abbas, who is in the Netherlands as part of a European tour, would visit Bensouda “in the context of the grave Israeli escalation in occupied Palestine,” the official said, asking not to be identified. Israel has accused Abbas of helping fuel the terror surge, in part by peddling “lies” about purported Israeli plans to change the status quo at Jerusalem’s contested  Temple Mount holy site.Ten Israelis have been killed in the spate of near-daily attacks since October 1 and dozens have been wounded. Over 60 Palestinians have been killed in the latest round of violence, the majority of them while carrying out stabbing attacks against Israelis. The rest died in clashes with Israeli military forces. There was no immediate confirmation from the ICC that Bensouda was meeting with Abbas.Earlier this year, the Palestinians formally asked the ICC to investigate Israel for alleged war crimes during last summer’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, drawing Jerusalem’s ire.Israel lost 66 soldiers and six civilians, and a Thai agricultural worker, in the month-long conflict, while the Palestinian death toll surpassed 2,100, according to Hamas officials in Gaza. Israel said about half of the Gaza dead were gunmen and blamed Hamas for all civilian deaths because it operated against Israel from residential areas, placing Gazans in harm’s way.Bensouda has officially opened a preliminary inquiry into the Palestinian allegations to see whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to a more formal investigation. To support their case, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki handed over two files to the ICC in June as evidence of its allegations. One file dealt with alleged Israeli crimes committed in Gaza during the 50-day war in July and August last year. The other file delved into the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, including “information about the issue of Palestinian prisoners,” the Palestinian mission in The Hague said in June.Abbas has also since called on Bensouda to probe the July firebombing of a Palestinian home blamed on Jewish extremists, in which a toddler and his parents died.Maliki was to accompany Abbas for Friday’s talks, and would address the press afterwards, the Palestinian official told AFP, refusing to be drawn further on the purpose of the visit.Israel, which has not signed up to the ICC, has opposed the Palestinian attempt to trigger a full investigation for war crimes, but Jerusalem has said it will engage with prosecutors. The Palestinian move also angered the United States which denounced it as “counterproductive.”The ICC was set up in 2002 to investigate and try those responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, where national authorities cannot or will not prosecute.

Russia delivering Iranian arms to Assad — report-Moscow’s Syrian base in Latakia said to be a transit point for Tehran’s supply of equipment and troops to Damascus-By Times of Israel staff October 29, 2015, 11:29 am

Russia has reportedly been delivering Iranian weapons to Syria’s embattled regime on a daily basis. Over the past 10 days, shipments in Russian cargo planes have taken place twice daily, the Fox News network reported Thursday, citing Western intelligence sources. The shipments are part of a broad Russian-Iranian-Syrian alliance forged in recent months by a senior Iranian general, Al-Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani is said to be coordinating the Russian-Iranian supply effort. The planes are operating out of Russia’s newly expanded operating base in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, and were spotted by intelligence agencies on the tarmac at the base.According to the report, “the flights are not registered, and are in breach of two United Nations Security Council resolutions which impose an arms embargo on Iran.”Along with the weapons, Iran is shipping troops into Syria to aid embattled Syrian strongman Bashar Assad — these too are arriving via the Russian base in Latakia. While Iran insists it is only helping Assad’s forces in the country’s four-year-old civil war in an “advisory capacity,” several Iranian generals and a significant number of Shiite Lebanese Hezbollah fighters loyal to Iran have been killed in battles against Islamic State, the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and other rebel groups.AP contributed to this report.

Iran to send ‘fleet of warships’ to the Atlantic Ocean-Tehran’s navy chief says vessels will ‘soon berth’ at Atlantic ports-By Times of Israel staff October 29, 2015, 5:41 pm 74

Iran intends to dispatch “a fleet of warships” to the Atlantic Ocean shortly, the semi-state Fars news agency reported Thursday, quoting the regime’s navy chief.“Our warships will soon berth at ports in the Atlantic Ocean,” Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari promised at a ceremony on Wednesday marking the return to port of Iranian warships that Fars said had taken part in joint drills with the Russian navy.Sayyari said the Iranian vessels had been in the Caspian Sea and at the Russian port of Astrakhan. “The presence of Iranian warships in international ports shows the Iranian Navy’s prowess,” Fars quoted him saying.Sayyari made a similar pledge to deploy warships in the Atlantic in early 2014. At the time, Iran promised to send its fleet close to American maritime borders as a counter to the US navy’s presence in the Gulf. But in April, the navy chief said the move had been canceled “due to a change in schedule.”The US-Iran relationship remains tense and friction-filled, despite the US-led world powers’ deal with Iran, sealed in July, on curbing its nuclear program.Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei has repeatedly rejected any future talks on other issues, and ruled out normalization with the United States. The former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani was reported to have admitted this week that the country’s nuclear program was started with the intent of building a nuclear weapon, with the express consent and participation of Khamenei. “Our basic doctrine was peaceful usage of the nuclear technology although we never abandoned the idea that if one day we are threatened and it is imperative, we would have the capability for going the other path [to nuclear weapon] as well,” Rafsanjani reportedly said.

No injuries as explosive device targets police in East Jerusalem-Pipe bomb reportedly hurled at Border Police patrol near Mount of Olives; Muslims to be given unfettered access to Temple Mount Friday-By Joshua Davidovich October 29, 2015, 1:51 pm 1-the times of israel

19:25-Bomb thrown at troops in Jerusalem-Israeli news outlets are reporting that an explosive device was hurled at an Israeli patrol in East Jerusalem, near the Mount of Olives. There are no injuries from the attack. According to Channel 10, the device was a pipe bomb.Earlier in the day, a rescue organization reported that Israelis have been targeted with 18 explosive devices in the last month and a half.-19:19-Police won’t restrict Temple Mount access-Police say they will not restrict access to the Temple Mount for Muslim worshipers on Friday, in a possible sign of decreasing tensions, the Ynet news website reports.Police have in past weeks restricted Muslim men under 50 from ascending the holy site in hopes of keeping violent protests from breaking out on the holy site.Tensions in Jerusalem have calmed in recent days, though Hebron and the southern West Bank have seen near daily stabbing and other attacks.-19:11-Mentos rolls into Middle East conflict-We know what happens when you drop Mentos into Diet Coke, but how about when you drop it into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? A picture of a Mentos package with the words “I love Israel” written on it, from at least a year ago, has somehow popped back up on social media, and is landing the candymaker in the middle of a heated battle between Israel supporters and boycotters. The picture of the package, which seems to have been taken in a store with American candy bars, dates from at least summer 2014.Online, it has garnered declarations of love for the Jewish State, and promises to boycott the product, which is available in a number of Arab states.Mentos has not commented on the hubbub.

Landing in Tel Aviv, Iberia pilot says ‘Welcome to Palestine’-‘He didn’t mention Israel once,’ passengers say; Spanish carrier apologizes, says pilot taken off Israel route pending probe-By Times of Israel staff October 29, 2015, 3:37 pm 65

Israeli passengers on an Israel-bound Iberia flight were astonished late Wednesday when the captain announced near the end of the flight that he was preparing to land the plane “in Palestine.”During the flight from Madrid by Spain’s national carrier, the pilot announced in Spanish that he was preparing to land “in Tel Aviv, in Palestine.” In English, he subsequently said he was preparing to land “in Tel Aviv,” and did not repeat the “Palestine” comment; neither did he say “Israel.”Lior, a passenger on the flight, told Channel 2 news that he was “a little bit shocked.”“I don’t understand why he said this,” said Lior. “We live in the State of Israel and he should have said ‘Israel.’ There was a reason he didn’t say it in English. It was deliberate.”Another passenger said “everyone noticed” that the pilot didn’t mention Israel by name. One of the passengers sent a letter to the company complaining about the pilot’s conduct, saying he and his family “were very offended,” and adding, “It is inappropriate and does serve your company well,” Channel 2 reported. The Spanish news website 20 Minutos reported on Thursday morning that the Israeli ambassador in Madrid penned a “tough letter” to the president of Iberia in which he asked him to take disciplinary measures against the pilot.Yedioth Ahronoth reported that an Iberia spokeswoman in Israel apologized on behalf of the airline and said the pilot who made the announcement would not be flying the route to Israel until the matter was fully investigated by the airline.

Israeli woman lightly wounded in Eilat stabbing-Motive behind attack still unknown; suspected assailant flees scene; Arab teen later detained by police-By Times of Israel staff October 29, 2015, 6:06 pm 1

An Israeli woman was lightly injured during a stabbing in the southernmost city of Eilat on Thursday, the police said. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspected stabber fled the scene shortly after the attack, according to police spokeswoman Luba Samri.Police arrived in force at the scene to search for the attacker and collect evidence and eyewitness testimony. An Arab teenager was arrested during a police search and was taken in for further questioning, Samri said. The motive behind the attack was not yet clear, Samri said, and police were investigating whether it was nationalist or criminal in nature.Earlier Thursday, a Palestinian man attempted to stab an IDF soldier in Hebron, in the second such attack of the day. The soldier was not hurt in the attack, which took place in the city’s Beit Hadassah neighborhood. The assailant was shot by security services, and police reported that he died of his wounds. The attack came just four hours after an IDF soldier was lightly wounded in a similar stabbing attack in the city, near the Tomb of the Patriarchs on the road between the West Bank city and the adjacent Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba. According to police, the incident occurred during a violent demonstration. A Palestinian man armed with a knife approached Israeli forces. He stabbed one of the IDF soldiers, slicing his face. The soldier recovered from the blow and fought back. The attacker then tried to assault a Border Police officer and was shot to death.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Meet the Orthodox Jewish physicist rethinking the origins of life-Jeremy England, 33, is an assistant professor at MIT who is bold enough to tackle science’s greatest question: How life arose on our planet-By Simona Weinglass October 29, 2015, 11:07 am 15-the times of israel

This is one of the all-time great questions of science, not to mention religion. So it takes a lot of gumption for a 33-year-old assistant professor at MIT to wade into the debate with a novel answer, one that he says doesn’t necessarily discount religious belief. Although his theories are far from proven, Jeremy England, who also happens to be an Orthodox Jew, is making waves with a bold hypothesis to explain how random molecules bumping into each other might turn into the precursors of life.According to England, under the right conditions, a random group of molecules will self-organize in a way that allows them to more efficiently use energy in their environment. Over time, the system could improve its ability to absorb energy, becoming increasingly lifelike. Nor is it an arbitrary process, but an inherent bias of the physical world, to form such self-organized systems.“If we start with something that’s not alive,” England told The Times of Israel, “and I make available some source of energy in its environment, there might be some tendency within the system to develop an improving ability to absorb that energy.” Over time, he says, “it may come to exhibit strikingly lifelike behaviors.”Right now this is just a theory, but England and his team are developing ways of testing it in simulation that will help them design good experiments in the future.“We’ve made progress, but we have a long way to go,” said England.-What is life?-What is life, and how does it differ from things that are not alive? Most of us have a working definition of life, says England, a sense of what is and isn’t alive, even if we can’t define life precisely.“Trees are alive, fish are alive, clouds are not and rocks are not,” he says. One of the properties that the things we call alive have in common is that they are “well suited at absorbing energy from their environment and then releasing that energy as heat. That’s something that living things do and they do it in ways that are much more skillful than non-living things.”For instance, plants are structured in such a way that they are great at absorbing energy from sunlight. Monkeys are good at finding bananas and eating them.England says that if you take a system containing a tremendous diversity of molecules, then add an external energy source, the molecules will start to arrange themselves in a shape that resonates with their environment. How does this happen? The famous video of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse, and the way a glass breaks when an opera singer reaches a certain pitch, are both examples of the physical phenomenon of resonance, where the shape of object or vessel will affect the pitch that it wants to vibrate at.“If particles are in the right shape they will move and wiggle a lot with their environment. If they’re in the wrong shape they won’t wiggle so much.”Any given system, says England, is constantly fluctuating a little bit and changing its shape, even if this is happening very slowly — for instance, water wearing away at rock or the motion of a glacier.“A system is capable of shifts in its shape but often slowly enough that you’re not keeping track. It will make lots of different random moves but if I am poking at it or singing at it or blowing at it, the system makes a little hop then another random little hop then another, and this is happening at the molecular level.”England says there’s a bias in how these hops happen.“The hops you’re less likely to undo are the ones where you get pushed harder by the environment. The most durable changes in shape happen when the system is shaped to be good at getting pushed on by the environment.”-Why is this important?-Edward J. Larson, a Pulitzer-Prize winning historian of science, told The Times of Israel that if England could demonstrate his theory to be true, “his name would be remembered, he could be the next Darwin.”But that is a big if.The second law of thermodynamics states that systems progress in the direction of increasing disorder or entropy, notes Larson.“Energy shouldn’t self-organize; it should go the other way. Darwin’s big break through was that natural selection permits situations that will allow increasing organization, and that doesn’t really counter the law of thermodynamics because you already have life. What Darwin could never do, and never tried to do, was explain how life began. Once life began, Darwin had a theory of how you could form new species, but Darwin didn’t do anything at all with the origin of life.”For over a century, scientists have been trying to come up with hypotheses as to how life could emerge from random molecules. Some say it happened when lightning passed through organic molecules, while others say life forms were brought to earth by comets, “but nothing has been proven or established yet.”Larson describes England’s theory that molecules might self-organize along the principles of resonance as “clever,” and says that if he could prove it, it would be “a tremendous discovery” that he would expect to see published in the pages of leading peer-reviewed journals like Nature or Science.“Those publications have authority. People wait to see things published there.”England says there is in fact a peer-reviewed theoretical piece coming out in Nature Nanotechnology next month, as well as another piece that is still under peer review, and a simulation study for which his team is just now completing the manuscript and will soon submit.-The implications for faith-According to Larson, a theory about how molecules self-organize into life would be much more attractive to atheists than to religious believers.“One of the problems atheists still have is, ‘OK, where did life come from?’ If you take Darwin, supplemented by the work of the neo-Darwinian synthesis and most recently the web-of-life theory of gene flow, you can say, OK, we don’t necessarily need God to be the origin of species. But religious people could still say that God created life itself and the laws of the universe.”Larson says that if England’s hypothesis were proven, it could push religion back still further. But England says his theory is agnostic on such religious questions as whether life has meaning or purpose.“We know what it would mean to be good at absorbing energy from an external drive,” says England. “But I don’t have a model of what that external drive is, if that external drive is also random. Physics can’t tell us whether we’re here for a reason or not, or if the way things are is chosen and influenced or whether it’s all random.”Physics can’t make the opposite claim either, that the universe is arbitrary, England says. Interestingly, England himself is an Orthodox Jew.-A homecoming-England says his mother was born in Poland in 1947 to Holocaust survivors. His father was a non-observant Lutheran. Raised in a nominally Jewish household in New Hampshire, England didn’t take much interest in Judaism until he went to Oxford University for graduate school.“When I was an undergraduate at Harvard there were faculty members like Ruth Wisse and Alan Dershowitz who extracted a price from people who were too sloppy in the way they defamed the Jews and Israel on campus. But Oxford was a cold shower in comparison. A lot of people had angry and hostile things to say about Israel. It made me want to know how I felt.”England decided to visit Israel for himself. He describes the experience as a “powerfully compelling experience of coming home.”He studied Hebrew, Judaism and Torah, and soon found himself becoming more religiously observant. At the same time, he wasn’t willing to jettison what he knew to be true from science.“I wasn’t going to reject science as a way of understanding some things about the world that are true, but I also was going to take Jewish tradition very seriously.”-How contradictions make you smarter-England says it was this frame of mind that has ultimately made him a better scientist.“When you encounter a contradiction or something that seems really difficult and you’re forced to work very hard to resolve it, without simply getting to ignore or reject one side of the contradiction, it’s very productive.”According to England, we can use different languages to talk about the same things, and each language serves a different purpose.‘If we see the world as a world where Jews are going to act a certain way and keep mitzvot, that world should not be described first and foremost in terms of electrons and protons and DNA. It should be described as being about light and dark, land and sea, men and women, fish and birds and plants. Those are the basic categories on which everything else is built. You have to talk about the world in a certain way when calling a nation to a certain shared compact in their behavior.”On the other hand, “I definitely don’t want to be misunderstood to be saying my scientific ideas come from the Torah, that the Torah is somehow a trove of scientific information and should be mined as such. That would be a foolish way to read the Torah, and would make me a very bad scientist.”-Why we confuse scientific models for reality-Any scientific theory, says England, is just a model that helps you describe or predict a subset of observable reality. A lot of people become so impressed with the model they use it to explain everything. For instance, Darwinism doesn’t mean there is no such thing as love or altruism, and that our sole purpose in life is optimizing fitness.“I think I would liken it to someone who takes a black and white photograph of a rainbow and say there’s no such thing as color. Or they say, look at all that I have understood about this rainbow. I have its shape, there are parts of it that are darker and lighter, I can show you how it’s positioned with respect to the sun and clouds, but there’s something missing that from the fullness of our own experience is obvious.”England says he understands the appeal of totalizing theories.“It’s very tempting to want the world to be fully comprehensible. We have an aesthetic desire to see complete perfection as well as an existential fear of the unknown or the unpredictable.”In fact, England says this point is made brilliantly in Tanach (the Hebrew Bible).“When it says God said let there be light, the point is that the light by which we see the world comes from the way we talk about it. And we have choices to make about how to talk about the world. A second and related point is that when you look at the Tower of Babel, God doesn’t want us to only talk about the world one way.”“You start with a tower and one language, and at the end of the day it doesn’t stay that way and that’s because God doesn’t want it to be that way. From the standpoint of Tanach it is a sort of inevitability of social physics that when you start with one language you end up with many languages, and the reason is because the world is too complicated to capture with one. And there’s something missing from your account of it once you are limiting your description in that way.”There is a clear lesson in this Biblical story that’s applicable to physics, he says.“Realizing there are many languages for describing the world helps us do better science, by helping us keep our modeling assumptions clear. Living things are interesting in their own right, totally independent of physics, but if you want to you can also ask about the physical properties of living things, and whether there’s anything distinctive about them that originates in the type of physical laws we assume they obey. That physical perspective on the biological world has been the inspiration for the new research that we’re doing.”Science historian Larson says that England’s ideas are ambitious, but warns that we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.“Science operates in a reserved way,” he says. “We don’t throw out ideas we haven’t proven yet. Until something is published in a peer-reviewed journal, it’s not science. But personally I hope he does prove it. I would love to see this question answered.”

Refugees could promote anti-Semitism, Jewish group says-By EUOBSERVER-OCT 28,15

Today, 09:31-The Central Council of Jews in Germany warned German chancellor Merkel Tuesday refugees could stoke anti-Semitic feeling in Germany because they "come from countries in which Israel is viewed as the enemy”, Merkel's CDU party said. Some EU politicians have also stigmatised refugees as potential terrorists and disease carriers.

Facebook’s platform connects inciters to terrorists, plaintiffs charge-20,000 Israelis sue Facebook for ignoring Palestinian incitement-Class-action suit filed in Brooklyn requires social network to immediately remove all posts ‘containing incitement to murder Jews’-By JTA and Times of Israel staff October 27, 2015, 2:05 am 118

A class-action lawsuit against Facebook is accusing the social media platform of ignoring widespread Palestinian posts calling for violence against Jews.In the suit filed Monday in New York State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, the 20,000 Israeli plaintiffs claim the Facebook posts have inspired many recent terror attacks and that “Facebook’s algorithms and platform connects inciters to terrorists who are further encouraged to perpetrate stabbings and other violence attacks against Israelis.”According to a news release issued by the plaintiffs, many recent assailants “were motivated to commit their heinous crimes by incitement to murder they read on Facebook — demagogues and leaders exhorting their followers to “slaughter the Jews,” and offering instruction as to the best manner to do so, including even anatomical charts showing the best places to stab a human being.”The suit alleges that Facebook has a “legal and moral obligation” to block much of this content but that it chooses not to.The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction against Facebook requiring the social network to “immediately remove all pages, groups and posts containing incitement to murder Jews; to actively monitor its website for such incitement that all incitement is immediately removed prior to being disseminated to masses of terrorists and would-be terrorists; and to cease serving as matchmaker between terrorists, terrorist organizations, and those who incite others to commit terrorism.”The complaint does not seek monetary damages against Facebook. The lead plaintiff, Richard Lakin, 76, died of his wounds Tuesday after he was shot and stabbed by Palestinian terrorists while riding on a crowded Jerusalem bus on October 13. Two other Israelis were killed and more than 20 were wounded in the attack.Three attorneys — Robert Tolchin of New York; Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the director of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, and Asher Perlin of Fort Lauderdale, Florida — filed the suit.In a news release issued by her organization, Darshan-Leitner said, “Facebook wields tremendous power and this publicly traded company needs to utilize it in a way that ensures that Palestinian extremists who are calling to stab Israelis and glorifying the terrorist that do, are not permitted to do it on its platform.”An article published Saturday by The Associated Press said that social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook, is the “number one source of news among young Palestinians.” Some 3.7 million Palestinians follow the Quds News Network, believed to be affiliated with Islamic Jihad, on the social media platform and 4.2 million follow the Shehab News Network, which is believed to be affiliated with Hamas, AP reported. The Times of Israel reported last week that Facebook pages such as Quds News Network (3.6 million followers on Facebook, 264,000 on twitter); Shehab News Agency (4.1 million followers on Facebook, 99,000 on twitter), and Urgent from Gaza (282,000 followers on Facebook) flood Palestinian computer screens with gruesome images of dead Palestinians and caricatures encouraging more attacks, often accompanied by a hashtag ordering “stab!” or warning “al-Aqsa is in danger!”Approximately one third of Palestinian society in Jerusalem and the West Bank is active on social media, said Orit Perlov, a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) who specializes in Palestinian social media.“There are no borders in social media,” she said. “The same message resonates in Gaza, Jerusalem and Umm al-Fahm.”In recent months, she added, Israel and the PA have been monitoring and arresting prominent Palestinian social media activists in Jerusalem and the West Bank, leaving the arena “like an octopus with tentacles but no head.”

PM rebukes deputy FM for dreaming of Israeli flag on Temple Mount-Netanyahu clarifies yet again that status quo at religious site remains; Hotovely says she was expressing private opinion-By Times of Israel staff October 27, 2015, 12:58 am 11

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned members of his government on Monday night to “act accordingly,” hours after his deputy foreign minister, Tzipi Hotovely, also from his Likud party, said her dream was for the Israeli flag to fly over the Temple Mount. In a statement released to the press, the Prime Minister’s Office said the Israeli government’s position vis-a-vis the contested Jerusalem site is well known and “nothing has changed.”The prime minister “made it clear that he expects all members of the government to act accordingly,” Netanyahu’s office said in the statement, in a clear rebuke of the deputy foreign minister. The prime minister has repeatedly insisted, most recently on Saturday night after US Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II in Jordan, that Israel has no intention of changing the status quo on the Temple Mount.Hotovely said Monday that the site was “the center of Israeli sovereignty, the capital of Israel, the holiest place for the Jewish people.”“It’s my dream to see the Israeli flag flying on the Temple Mount,” she said in an interview with the Knesset channel.Hours later, she issued a statement clarifying that her “private opinions were not government policy” and that she was “committed to the policy by which the prime minister said that there would be no change to the status quo.”Hotovely, who favors the annexation of the West Bank and opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state, has made public visits to the Temple Mount in recent years along with a handful of other right-wing Israeli lawmakers. She recently said that any international observers placed on the Temple Mount would be a violation of Israel’s sovereignty.“If I were to tell the prime minister what’s correct, in my eyes it’s definitely not proper to see the flags of the Islamic State or Hamas, in my eyes that’s a disgrace,” she said. “We need to fly the [Israeli] flag. This is the capital of Israel and this is the holiest place for the Jewish people.”Israel captured the Temple Mount from Jordan during the 1967 Six Day War. Just hours after Israeli paratroopers took control of the Temple Mount, then-defense minister Moshe Dayan ordered the Israeli flag — which the soldiers had quickly raised — to be lowered. Since then, there hasn’t been one on the flashpoint religious site.Jews consider the compound, site of two Jewish temples in antiquity, to be their holiest place. Muslims consider the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which stands atop the Temple Mount, to be the third-holiest site in Islam.Hotovely’s remarks were met with criticism from opposition lawmaker Yoel Hasson of the Zionist Union, who called on Netanyahu to dismiss her immediately.“The messianic deputy minister continues to inflame the entire Middle East,” Hasson said. “Every few months she repeats her calls to fly the Israeli flag on the Temple Mount, as if the situation weren’t volatile enough.”The Temple Mount has been the focus of violent clashes between Palestinian rioters and Israeli security forces in recent months, and an ongoing escalation of violence, involving dozens of Palestinian stabbing attacks on Israelis, has been triggered, in part, by Palestinian claims that Israel intends to change the status quo on the religious site. Israel has repeatedly denied the claims.Non-Muslims are permitted to visit the compound in Jerusalem’s Old City, but non-Muslim prayer is not allowed. The site is administered by the Jordanian Waqf.Hasson called for Hotovely’s dismissal from the government “for the sake of the security of Israel.”

WATCH: Mother of Palestinian terrorist threatens own stabbing attack-Umm Muhammad Shamasne hopes her other sons will follow in footsteps of their brother, killed while carrying out terror attack on bus in Jerusalem-By Times of Israel staff October 26, 2015, 11:01 pm 26

The mother of a Palestinian terrorist who was killed while perpetrating a terror attack aboard a Jerusalem bus earlier this month said she hoped her other sons would follow in his footsteps, and, with knife in hand, announced her intention to carry out her own attack against Israelis.During an interview with the Lebanese Al-Quds TV channel, Umm Muhammad Shamasne said the family was proud of her son, who was “martyred for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” and said she was only angry that “he did not take me to be martyred with him.”“We regret nothing, we are proud of him,” Shamasne said, acknowledging that the family had been aware of Muhammad’s intentions to carry out an attack against Israelis.“Let Mu’tasim and Yousuf be martyred as well. It is all a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa and Palestine,” she said. After offering the interviewer candy to celebrate her son’s martyrdom, Shamasne pulled out a knife concealed beneath her clothes and said, while making stabbing motions: “Watch out, Israel! Watch out!”The journalist asked Shamasne to put the knife away, saying “such spectacles” were inappropriate for the television interview. “I understand the searing pain, the anger, and the tension, but we can’t have such things, if you’ll forgive me,” the reporter said, before turning the subject to home demolitions.Shamasne appeared to be undeterred by Israel’s punitive measure of demolishing the homes of Palestinian terrorists.“The homes will be a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa. I will sacrifice my four children for the sake of Al-Aqsa, and I will be the first to sacrifice myself for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” she said.“Watch out, Israel. You have brought the fire of Hell upon yourself, and you don’t know who you’re dealing with. You have brought the fire of Hell upon yourself, Israel,” Shamasne warned.“There’s no need for me to say any more. My deeds will speak louder than words,” she concluded.Shortly after 8 p.m. on October 12, 22-year-old Muhammad Shamasne boarded bus No. 185 near the entrance to Jerusalem and stabbed a 19-year-old Israel Defense Forces soldier and unsuccessfully tried to grab his gun. The soldier and a civilian were lightly injured in the attack.Shamasne was shot and killed by police while passengers were attempting to subdue him.The October 22 interview was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, a US media watchdog group, and was uploaded on Monday.

Israel pans ‘absurdity’ as Venezuela elected to join UNHRC-Terrorist arrested after stabbing Israeli woman in West Bank; victim evacuated to hospital in moderate condition-By Marissa Newman October 28, 2015, 1:40 pm 20-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Times of Israel is liveblogging Wednesday’s developments as they unfold.19:03-Rivlin says he fears for democracy, not his life-President Reuven Rivlin says he doesn’t fear for his life or that of his wife, but he does fear for Israel’s democracy. The president was responding to a perceived threat by Hagai Amir, brother and accomplice to the killer of ex-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, on Facebook. Amir was arrested on Tuesday and freed to house arrest on Wednesday.“I do not fear for my life. My wife is also not afraid,” says Rivlin. “We fear for democracy.”The president says that he backs the legal system’s interpretation of the line between free speech and incitement in Israel.18:56-MKs vote to make Arabic compulsory in schools-Israeli lawmakers vote to make Arabic classes compulsory for students from the age of six, in a move backers hope would help improve ties between Israeli Jews and Arabs.Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, votes unanimously in favor of the bill in a first reading on Wednesday, with about half of all deputies in attendance. It will now be studied in committee before returning to parliament for a second vote. The bill was introduced by lawmaker Oren Hazan, of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud Party, who says it is meant to reach out to Arab Israelis.“Language is a door to culture,” he tells AFP. “I am looking reality in the eyes and I understand there is no possibility to walk to peace without understanding each other.”— AFP-18:31-Venezuela elected to Human Rights Council-Venezuela is elected to the UN Human Rights Council, in a move slammed by Israel as “absurd.”“There is no limit to the absurdity — Venezuela is the greatest ally of Iran and North Korea,” says Israeli envoy to the UN Danny Danon, according to a Hebrew statement. “You should remember this day the next time you hear that the council condemned Israel. When a state like this — that oppresses its citizens with violence, limits freedom of the press for journalists and jails those opposed to the regime — sits on the council, it isn’t surprising that the council chooses to condemn Israel more than any other country in the world.”18:08-We must not get used to terror — Liberman-Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman says Israelis must not accept daily terror attacks on civilians.“We must not get used to terror,” he says. “Just as they tried to have us get used to the ‘trickle’ of rockets from Gaza, now they are trying to have us live with daily knife attacks. In both cases, these are serious failings of a government that cannot grant security for its citizens. We cannot accept this and we must demand that the government combat terror without compromise.”18:01-Jewish-Catholic relations ‘better than ever’ — WJC-Marking the 50-year anniversary of the landmark declaration by which the Vatican ended centuries of officially condoned anti-Semitism and urged bridge-building with all other faiths, the World Jewish Congress says Jewish-Catholic relations are “better than ever.”“What has happened since ‘Nostra Aetate’ is nothing short of a miracle,” Ronald Lauder, the president of the WJC, says at a press conference in Rome, adding that 150 Jewish leaders had attended the papal audience.“Relations between Catholics and Jews on many levels, not just the highest, are now better than ever.”The document, adopted by cardinals and bishops around the world, also reached out to Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims.— AFP contributed

UN resolution would freeze settlements, Palestinian lawsuits-New Zealand’s Security Council initiative marks the latest effort to restart direct talks based on two-state solution-By Tamar Pileggi October 28, 2015, 12:05 pm 27-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

In the latest effort to revive direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, New Zealand has drafted a UN resolution that reportedly calls for a freeze on Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and for Palestinians to abandon their bid to take legal action against Israel at the International Criminal Court. The draft resolution would assert that the Security Council is “very concerned” over the stalled peace talks, and call on both parties to “take the necessary measures to rebuild confidence and prepare for the resumption of negotiations,” based on a two-state solution, Haaretz reported on Wednesday. The draft urges both sides to avoid taking “actions or declarations that would harm mutual confidence or predetermine the results of negotiations,” including the expansion of settlements and demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, the report said.Distributed to the other 14 members of the Security Council on Friday, the resolution would also call on both sides to refrain from making “provocative actions” against the status quo on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, the epicenter of recent unrest in Israel and the West Bank.It would further call on Palestinians to refrain from “lodging complaints against Israel or the situation in the territories at the International Court in The Hague.”The resolution would appeal to Security Council member states, Arab supporters of the Saudi peace initiative and Quartet representatives, to support Israelis and Palestinians in preparing for renewed talks.Last week, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully told the Security Council he hoped the measure would help “stimulate a level of debate” on the way forward as Israel and the Palestinians sink deeper into violence.“The events of recent weeks cry out for council action,” said McCully.New Zealand’s initiative was floated after France circulated a draft for a council statement that failed to win agreement, highlighting difficulties to forge a consensus in the 15-member council. The French draft called for the stationing of international observers on the Temple Mount.Diplomats said they did not expect New Zealand’s proposal to be a game-changer, but the initiative underscored the need for the Security Council to take a more active role. The council has not adopted a resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since 2009 and its last formal statement dates back to September 17, when it called for calm at the Temple Mount.AFP contributed to this report.

Israel faces threats ranging from rockets to nuclear - defence minister-Reuters – OCT 27,15-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israel faces a wide variety of threats ranging from Islamic militants wielding missiles and rockets to nuclear attack, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Tuesday during a visit to the United States.Yaalon was speaking with U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter at the National Defense University in Washington. Carter emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Israeli security relationship and the United States' commitment to maintaining close ties.Carter and Yaalon are due to visit the Naval Air Station in Maryland on Wednesday for a demonstration of the F-35 joint strike fighter. The United States has said it will deliver the F-35 to Israel next year, making it the only country in the Middle East to have the top-flight aircraft.Yaalon ticked off a number of threats that he said Israel has faced, including from Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Bashar al-Assad's Syria, and Iran."The threat has been changed dramatically from conventional type warfare to what might be called super-conventional...weapons of mass destruction, or sub-conventional like terror, rockets, and missiles," Yaalon said.Close U.S.-Israeli ties have come under strain in recent months over a nuclear agreement negotiated between Iran and the United States and other world powers, which Israeli officials have denounced as empowering Iran and endangering Israel.Yaalon said the deal, which was agreed in July and imposes curbs on Iran's nuclear programme in return for the removal of some economic sanctions, could delay an Iranian nuclear threat against Israel."Yes, for the time being, for about a decade or so, it (Iran's nuclear programme) might be postponed as a threat against us," Yaalon said, adding that the Iranian government had not given up its "vision of having a military nuclear capability."Iran denies ever pursuing a nuclear weapons programme, and said that it wanted nuclear capability only for civilian purposes.Yaalon also addressed ongoing strife between Israelis and Palestinians. Violence has flared in Israel, Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip in recent weeks, in part triggered by Palestinians' anger over what they see as Jewish encroachment on Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound. Yaalon said claims that Israel had violated agreements related to the holy site were false.Last week, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry voiced cautious hope that there may be a way to defuse the violence between Israelis and Palestinians.(Reporting by Yeganeh Torbati; Editing by Marguerita Choy)

Palestinian leader warns EU that violence could escalate By Andrew Rettman-OCT 27,15-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:20-Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has said violence could get worse unless Israel protects Muslim rights and resumes peace talks.Speaking to media in the EU capital on Monday (26 October), he described the situation as "extremely serious and grave", adding "it may even deteriorate, and this is my fear".The EU's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, invited him to Brussels as part of European and US efforts to stop the cycle of stabbings, car rammings, and shootings which began last month in Jerusalem and the West Bank.Earlier on Monday, Israeli police killed three Palestinians in Israeli-occupied Hebron. The incidents bring the Palestinian death toll to 60 people this month, including 15 minors. Palestinian attackers killed nine Israelis in the same period.EU diplomats say the violence is hard to stop because attacks are being carried out spontaneously by individuals on both sides. They fear it could escalate into a Palestinian uprising, or "intifada", as in 2000, in events which lasted five years and claimed thousands of lives.Abbas blamed the recent flare-up on Israel. He said it stems from "a feeling of disappointment in the young [Palestinian] generation, which basically don't see any hope" of a future Palestinian state. He said it's also linked to Israel's "non-respect" of the "status quo" on Temple Mount and to Israeli settler violence."Settlers in the West Bank go out among houses and villages, protected by the Israeli army, and commit killings and attacks against Palestinian nationals. These are the direct causes of the deterioration in the situation".The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is one of Judaism and Islam's holiest sites.Jews are allowed to visit but not to pray there, under an accord which goes back more than 200 years. But Israeli hardliners, including in the government, are calling for the old pact to be scrapped.Abbas told press he's ready to resume peace talks and to live "side by side" with Israel if first stops settlement expansion.Mogherini said the Temple Mount status quo is "very important not only for the Palestinian people, but, I'd say for all people in the world".She said she shares Abbas' "frustration" on the stalled peace process."What we're looking for is concrete steps on the ground, including difficult ones, which can improve the everyday lives of Palestinian people … and, on the other side, which can guarantee more security for Israeli people", she said. The Abbas visit comes amid attempts by both sides to win European sympathy. For its part, the Israeli EU embassy the same day circulated an electronic flier which lists recent Palestinian attacks. It accused Abbas of incitement, citing him as having said, on Palestinian TV on 16 September: "We welcome every drop of blood spilled in Jerusalem" .Israel's ambassador to the EU, David Walzer, in an op-ed published on the Politico website last week, added: "What is needed is for the EU to use its clout to help end the spate of attacks against Israeli citizens".He criticised EU plans to publish a code for European retailers on how to label Israeli settler products."Seeing European shops label Jewish products brings back some very painful memories for many Israelis", he said, referring to anti-Semitism in Europe on the eve of World War II.Palestinian officials note Israeli leaders are also enflaming the situation, however.Israel's deputy foreign minister, Tzipi Hotovely, said on TV on Monday: "My dream is to see the Israeli flag flying over the Temple Mount … It's the holiest place for the Jewish people".Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, last week, said the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem instructed Hitler to burn Jews, in a claim denounced as false by historians. The feeling in some circles in Europe was reflected in an ad, published in The Guardian, a British daily, on Tuesday. The text, signed by 343 academics, pledged to stop cooperation with Israeli educational institutions on grounds of "Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian land, the intolerable human rights violations that it inflicts on all sections of the Palestinian people, and its apparent determination to resist any feasible settlement".The same newspaper, last Thursday, published a letter by more than 150 artists, including Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, opposing cultural boycotts.

19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

In break, top EU official suggests Israel-Palestine ‘confederation’-Despite official European stance supporting two-state solution, parliament head brings up possibility conflict can be solved with different arrangement-By Raphael Ahren October 26, 2015, 12:20 pm 57-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Israeli-Palestinian could be solved either through a two-state solution or a “confederation,” a top European Union official said last week, in what appears to be a suggestion in sharp contrast to official EU policy.“Peace in the Middle East is possible only if the mother of all conflicts, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, is resolved and both peoples live together in two states or a confederation,” Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, said Thursday during a speech in Düsseldorf, according to a report in a German Jewish weekly. It is unclear what exactly Schulz meant when he invoked the term “confederation”  (Staatenbund in German) as an alternative to a two-state solution. Staatenbund usually refers to a league of states in which each state retains full sovereignty. The EU’s declared foreign policy unambiguously calls for a two-state solution. “A negotiated two state solution is the only way to bring the lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said earlier this month. In July, the union’s 28 foreign ministers declared their commitment to the creation of an “independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign, and viable State of Palestine.” They reaffirmed “that there is no alternative to a negotiated two state solution.”Schulz’s spokesperson and the EU’s foreign service in Brussels had not replied to Times of Israel queries by the time of publication of this report. While the idea of a confederation has been suggested before, it has usually been dismissed as tantamount to a one-state solution, which could mean the end of Israel as a Jewish state.Schulz made the remarks after receiving a prize for his “courageous engagement for Middle East peace” by a group called German Initiative for the Middle East, or DINO, which was co-founded in 2006 by the former head of the German Jewish community Paul Spiegel.Speaking to 120 guests at the event, Schulz said that the violence in Israel has become “uncontrollable” since both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have “only very little influence on the population,” he said,The German-born Schulz further said that Israel had the right to protect its citizens in face of the current terror wave, but needs to safeguard the principle of proportionality, according to DINO’s website. Peace and security will only come to the region when a Palestinian state is created, he was quoted as saying. In February 2014, Schulz caused a minor diplomatic incident in Jerusalem when, during a generally pro-Israel speech in the Knesset, he appeared to accuse the government of limiting the amount of water Palestinians may consume.Speaking in his mother tongue German, Schulz recounted a meeting held two days earlier with young Palestinians in Ramallah. “One of the questions from these young men that moved me the most was: How can it be that Israelis are allowed to use 70 liters [of water] per day and Palestinians only 17?” Schulz related. At this point in his speech, several right-wing MKs yelled out in protest, calling the figures Palestinian lies, and a number of Jewish Home party lawmakers walked out. A short while later, Netanyahu accused Schulz of having “selective hearing.”Then-economy minister and Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett also took Schulz to task, demanding an apology. “I will not accept false moralizing against the people of Israel, in Israel’s Knesset. Certainly not in German,” Bennett stated at the time. (They made peace a week later, when Schulz assured him that he would always stand with Israel.)Schulz, who hails from Aachen, Germany, became the European Parliament’s president in 2012. He first made worldwide headlines in 2003, when former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi told him that he was the perfect candidate to play a kapo in a Nazi movie.

Mogherini urges Netanyahu, Abbas to meet Quartet ‘in days’-EU foreign policy chief says Israeli-Palestinian conflict can’t be contained, will only get worse with each round of violence-By AFP October 27, 2015, 10:42 pm 2-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday urged Israel Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to meet Quartet representatives “within days” in the hope of kick-starting stalled peace talks.“I have asked both Netanyahu and Abbas to receive the Quartet envoys in the coming days, not weeks,” Mogherini said, stressing the need for speed if an upsurge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians is not to spiral out of control. The Quartet comprises the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia and was set up in 2002 to promote what is known as the Middle East Peace Process. The peace talks, always difficult, stalled completely in 2014 despite the best efforts of US Secretary of State John Kerry but he has returned to the fray in recent weeks against a backdrop of a spate of terror attacks in Israel and Russia’s direct intervention in the bloody Syrian conflict.Mogherini warned the European parliament that there is a risk the Israeli-Palestinian dispute could get caught up in new conflicts in the region if the parties do not make an effort now to secure peace based on a two-state solution.“This is a risky time for Israelis and Palestinians alike… it is not business as usual in managing the old conflict,” she told the parliament in the eastern French city of Strasbourg.“If anyone believes we can just contain this… they are wrong. Every cycle of violence is going to be worse (than the previous one),” she said.Mogherini said it was essential to build confidence, to show the two sides by concrete actions on the ground that “they have a future in their lands.”Mogherini met Abbas in Brussels on Monday and Netanyahu last week in Berlin as part of efforts to revive the peace process.

Ya’alon: Conflict rooted in denial of Jewish state, not settlements-Defense minister offers veiled rejection of US stance on cause of latest round of violence, reveals he initially supported Oslo accords-By Rebecca Shimoni Stoil October 27, 2015, 10:40 pm 1-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — While asserting the importance of the US-Israel strategic relationship, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon pushed against those who believe that settlements or Israel’s presence in the West Bank are at the root of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, stressing instead that conflict rests upon Palestinian refusal to recognize Israel’s legitimacy as a Jewish state.Speaking at the prestigious National Defense University in Washington, DC, before senior US and international defense officials, Ya’alon told the audience that “the challenge is that there are too many parties who are unwilling recognize Israel’s position in the region as a Jewish state.” He cited Iran’s “Islamic ideology” that he said “does not allow any non-Islamic entity to be on this land of Israel.”“It’s quite a unique challenge when it comes to security, [and] quite a unique challenge when it comes to politics,” he added.Ya’alon, considered a hawk within the Likud Party, also revealed that he had initially supported the Oslo peace accords, presented by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin before his assassination in 1995.“Israel is aspiring for peace. As one who has experienced wars, I am anxious to have peace. I can tell you personally that I supported Oslo,” revealed Ya’alon, who was at the time serving as a division commander in the West Bank. “I thought compromise might be a good idea to reach peace and tranquility.”“As one who has experienced wars, I am anxious to have peace. I can tell you personally that I supported Oslo. I thought compromise might be a good idea to reach peace and tranquility.”Ya’alon said that he came to realize that there was a critical limitation to the process. “Unfortunately neither Yasser Arafat at that time and Abu Mazen [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] today…even those two who are considered relatively moderate in the West are not ready to recognize our right to exist as the nation state of the Jewish people,” he said.Ya’alon dismissed as “lies” claims that Israel’s occupation in the West Bank, settlements or the status quo on the Temple Mount stood behind the latest round of violence.“Unfortunately,” he added, “they are able to manipulate not just their constituencies, but they are able manipulate even western like-minded people by that false propaganda.”The defense minister is in the US to discuss renewing a defense partnership with the US, in a visit seen as key to mending a relationship heavily stained in recent months by bad blood over the Iran nuclear deal, as well as other issues.Ya’alon repeated the concept of “Western like-minded people” again during his speech, but never indicate what or who he intended. In the past few weeks, the State Department – and Secretary of State John Kerry himself – have been criticized for seeming to imply that the growth of settlements or changes to the status quo at the contentious Jerusalem site have led to the recent escalation in violence.“ Those who claim that the problem is settlements – they murdered Jews before the construction of any settlement in the West Bank,” he asserted later in the speech. “It is quite frustrating that Western like-minded people are ready to be deceived, manipulated by this kind of propaganda forgetting the most important distinction between good and evil, going to relativism and other distinctions of victims and victimhood.”“Yes the Palestinians are victims – of their leadership,” Ya’alon quipped, noting a long list of partition and peace proposals that have been rejected on behalf of the Palestinians from the British Mandate onward.Ya’alon also cited what he described “the denial of accountability” which he said “has become a precious strategic asset.”Abbas, he said “is not accountable for the Gaza Strip, he is not accountable for what is going on with terrorists trying to stab Jews, he is not accountable for anything.”“He is too weak to be accountable,” Ya’alon complained.Ya’alon and Kerry have had a frosty relationship since 2014, when the Defense Minister was quoted in Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot as making derisive comments about Kerry’s involvement in regional politics. In his Tuesday speech, however, Ya’alon concluded by stressing the significance of US-Israel ties, a theme he has repeated during his visit to Washington DC.Calling for a strategy of “moral clarity,” Ya’alon argued that the “one country that can be the leader in the world in the 21st century is the United States.”“That’s why we so appreciate the relationship between our country and the United States,” said Ya’alon. “Based on common values as well as common interests. For us the relationship between Israel and the United States is a cornerstone of our national security concept. We are so lucky to have such an allied friend [even when] we have disputes among friends over certain issues.”Ya’alon said that he “hope[s] that the United States is enjoying what we do in our region” and said that he had “no doubt that the United States is a strong ally in this relationship.”“I am here this week in Washington to discuss the future of this relationship — how can we meet future challenges for both of us – the US and Israel, bearing in mind a future situation that is going to be characterized in the Middle East by chronic instability over a very long period of time,” he concluded.Ya’alon is in Washington to discuss long-term security planning and funding arrangements with his counterpart, Carter. His visit comes as part of the renewed process of negotiating a new 10-year security memorandum of understanding to replace the current one, which will expire in 2017.The memorandum, a centerpiece of US defense aid to Israel, is expected to continue the annual grants to Israel, which today sit at approximately $3 billion per year.Introducing Ya’alon before the speech, Carter played up the warmth of the ties between the two countries – and his respect for the often outspoken former IDF head. Carter described Ya’alon as “one of the finest defense officials in the world,” and as a “friend and a strategic thinker.”Carter said that regarding security partnerships, the US “appreciates what we get as well as what we give.”“The United States stands with Israel and we always will,” Carter proclaimed. “Israel is a cornerstone of our strategy in the Middle East and its security is a top priority for America, for our military and for President [Barack] Obama and for me personally.”

Soldiers foil stabbing, kill would-be attacker in Hebron-No troops injured; attack comes hours after soldier moderately injured in West Bank stabbing-By Times of Israel staff and Judah Ari Gross October 27, 2015, 11:20 pm 1

A Palestinian was shot and killed in Hebron as he attempted to stab an Israeli soldier, the Israel Defense Forces said Tuesday night. The would-be attacker drew a knife and tried to stab a soldier as his ID was checked at a “crossing” in the West Bank city, the army said in a statement.“The force responded to the immediate danger with fire towards the attacker, resulting in his death,” the statement read. The thwarted attack took place in the small Israeli enclave of Tel Rumeida in the divided city. The soldier was not injured in the attempted attack.Hebron, home to several hundred Jewish families among a larger Palestinian population, has become a flashpoint in an ongoing round of violence. Earlier in the day, a protest against Israel’s refusal to hand over attackers bodies to families for burial turned violent, with dozens of Palestinians reportedly injured. The city has also seen near-daily stabbing attacks over the last two weeks. The foiled Hebron attack was the third of its kind in the area in as many days, and the second attack in the southern West Bank Tuesday night.Several hours before the attack, a soldier was moderately wounded in a stabbing by two assailants at the Etzion junction, between Hebron and Jerusalem. The two attackers stabbed the soldier, 19, in his head before other soldiers stationed in the area shot them. Both assailants were killed, according to an Israel Police spokesman. The stabbing took place as soldiers approached two suspicious-looking Arab men at a bus stop, an IDF spokeswoman told The Times of Israel. The army was searching the area to ensure there were no other attackers, according to Channel 2. The attack took place at the Etzion Junction, which has been the scene of several attacks in the past two weeks. On Monday, an Israeli soldier was stabbed and seriously injured in an attack near Hebron. The attacker was shot and killed by other troops as he carried out the knife attack near the entrance to the Palestinian village of Beit Anun, north of Hebron, the IDF said.On Sunday, a woman attempted to stab soldiers at a checkpoint in Hebron, and was shot and killed by troops at the scene, the army said. There were no injuries in that attack. Earlier in the day, a man was stabbed by assailants after his car was stoned on a road east of the Etzion settlement bloc south of Jerusalem.

Israeli residency proposal unnerves Jerusalem’s Palestinians-Stripping rights en masse not likely due to legal hurdles, but threat nonetheless has East Jerusalemites concerned-By Mohammed Daraghmeh October 28, 2015, 12:31 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli proposal that could potentially strip tens of thousands of Palestinians in Jerusalem of their residency rights has sent shudders through the targeted Arab neighborhoods — areas that were dumped outside Israel’s security barrier a decade ago, even though they are within the city’s boundaries. The government’s review of the status of these neighborhoods, home to tens of thousands of people, illustrates the fragile position of Palestinians in a city where they have long suffered discrimination and are caught between the pragmatic conveniences of living under Israeli control and the loyalties to the Palestinian cause. With few exceptions, Jerusalem’s Palestinians are not Israeli citizens, and instead hold residency status that can be revoked. Removing residency rights en masse appears highly unlikely due to legal hurdles and domestic and international opposition. But government critics said the fact that it is even being discussed sent an ominous message to Palestinians.“There is nothing permanent about permanent residency,” said Yudith Oppenheimer, executive director of Ir Amim, an advocacy group that promotes coexistence and equality in the city. “This is another reminder for them how conditional that status is.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the review at a recent meeting called to discuss a wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence that has roiled the area in the past month. About a third of the city’s 300,000 Palestinians live in these neighborhoods. An official who attended the meeting said the review would look at “all the issues” affecting these neighborhoods, including residency rights, which are coveted by Palestinians because they allow them to work and move freely inside Israel and gain access to Israeli health care and social services. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss internal deliberations, said the latest violence had exposed a “vacuum” in these outlying neighborhoods, which have a minimal Israeli presence but are not considered West Bank territory. In the past five weeks, 11 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks, mostly stabbings, while 54 Palestinians, including 32 labeled by Israel as terrorists, have died from Israeli fire. Many of the Palestinian attackers have originated in East Jerusalem, the section of the city captured by Israel in 1967 and claimed by the Palestinians for their capital.Israel has responded with a crackdown in Palestinian neighborhoods, deploying thousands of security forces and placing roadblocks and military-style checkpoints at the entrances. The new review of those areas that lie outside the security barrier has increased Palestinian fears that they are not wanted.“We are part of the Palestinian people. We are Jerusalemites, and we will remain in Jerusalem until a political solution is found,” said Munir Izghayer, a community leader in the Kufr Aqab neighborhood.Israel captured then-mainly Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war. After the war, it redrew Jerusalem’s municipal boundary, expanding it into the West Bank to encompass what were then small Palestinian communities, and annexed the lands that were made part of the city as part of its capital. The annexation was never internationally recognized, and few Palestinians applied for Israeli citizenship, viewing it as acceptance of an illegitimate occupation.Today, Jerusalem is an open city, and thousands of Palestinians work in the more affluent western part. But interaction between Jews and Arabs is largely superficial, and Arab neighborhoods suffer from neglect and poverty, with overcrowded classrooms, pothole-ridden roads and limited municipal services. The situation is especially dire in neighborhoods outside the security barrier.Israel built the barrier in the 2000s in response to a wave of suicide bombings and other deadly attacks. In Jerusalem, the structure slices through some Arab neighborhoods and places others on the West Bank side altogether. With development tightly restricted by Israel, Arab neighborhoods inside the barrier have seen real estate values skyrocket in recent years due to a housing crunch. As a result, areas outside the barrier have experienced a wave of unregulated construction as people search for cheaper housing within municipal boundaries, since leaving the city for nearby West Bank communities could result in a loss of residency rights.“They are building everywhere here to find places for poor Jerusalemites to live in because if they move to the West Bank, their IDs will be taken” said Mohammed Samarah, a 59-year-old unemployed restaurant worker, pointing to a new 12-story high-rise in Kufr Aqab.Although these outlying neighborhoods are considered part of the city, residents must pass through checkpoints in order to reach jobs, hospitals and holy sites in the heart of east Jerusalem. Israeli work crews rarely venture beyond the barrier, fearing confrontations with the local population. Last year, some areas had limited or no running water for weeks.Samarah, who grew up in Jerusalem’s Old City, said he now fears that Israel is plotting to take away his residency rights, which include unemployment assistance of about $600 a month. Since 1967, Israel has stripped some 14,000 Palestinians of residency, mostly in cases of people who have moved away, even to the West Bank, for more than seven years.“I’m very concerned about my ID. The only way to protect it is to go and live inside Jerusalem, but I don’t have money. It’s very expensive to live out there. I will wait and see,” he said. But most important, he said he was concerned about losing his connection to the Old City — site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, an important Palestinian national symbol that has been at the center of the latest unrest.“I want the ID to go to the Old City, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to the place of my childhood,” he said.Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on his plans. Mayor Nir Barkat’s office also refused to discuss Netanyahu’s latest proposal, though in the past the mayor has said he has worked hard to narrow the gaps between the city’s western and eastern sections. The odds of Israel actually taking action appear slim. Israeli leaders often brag about keeping Jerusalem unified, and dividing the city, even its outlying parts, would likely run into opposition from nationalists who dominate Netanyahu’s coalition.Emanuel Gross, a law professor at the University of Haifa, said the plan would require passage of a new law in parliament and could also violate international law. “This is not a simple thing,” he said.Asked about the proposal on Monday, US State Department spokesman John Kirby urged Israel to avoid “provocative actions and rhetoric,” and said stripping people of their rights “would certainly be of concern to us.”Oppenheimer, the coexistence activist, said suggestions that these neighborhoods could simply be turned over to the West Bank failed to recognize the deep Palestinian connection to Jerusalem.“They moved to these areas because they insisted on being Jerusalemites, and this is the only way they can maintain their Jerusalem status,” she said. “We cannot deny all these ties to the city, cut them off from the city, and think they will become something else.”The Associated Press.

Rekindled US-Israel security ties on display in DC meetings-Defense chiefs Moshe Ya’alon and Ashton Carter hold talks on 10-year security memorandum, highlight coordination-By Rebecca Shimoni Stoil October 27, 2015, 7:44 pm 2-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and his US counterpart Ashton Carter were slated to deliver a joint lecture in Washington Tuesday, in a sign of rebounding security ties between Israel and the US in the wake of tensions over the Iran nuclear deal. The speech at Washington’s National Defense University comes as part of an extended fence-mending visit that sought to highlight the closeness of US-Israel security ties. The US and Israel recently restarted the process of negotiating a new 10-year security memorandum of understanding to replace the current one, which will expire in 2017.The Obama administration inherited the previous Bush-era memorandum, and it is expected that the current administration will leave a new one as part of its legacy to whoever wins the November 2016 presidential elections.Last week, ambassador to Washington Ron Dermer confirmed during a speech in Washington that Israel and the United States have resumed talks on the memorandum, a centerpiece of US defense aid to Israel. The decade-long aid package is expected to extend the annual funding, which today sits at approximately $3 billion per year. While the funding is critical to Israel’s ability to maintain a qualitative military advantage over neighboring states, talks over the new memorandum were frozen at the peak of US-Israel acrimony over the Iran deal. While Israeli officials have stressed that they do not see the new agreement as a tit-for-tat for the Iran deal, security experts have said that they do expect the new agreement to take into consideration additional security concerns raised by the conditions created by the controversial agreement. The closeness of security ties between the US and Israel – and specifically between Carter and Ya’alon – has been on display since the defense chief’s arrival Monday.Speaking at a Monday evening memorial service for slain prime minister Yitzhak Rabin at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Ya’alon described Carter as his “good friend,” emphasizing that Carter has “time and again proven his commitment to the security of the State of Israel.”The two, Ya’alon said, “will discuss how to further increase the IDF’s capacity and capabilities to maintain our qualitative edge, given increased and growing regional threats on the security of our country.”Ya’alon, who has been one of the sharpest critics of Washington’s policies regarding Iran, took a conciliatory tone on Monday, declaring that “the United States is Israel’s greatest friend. Its contribution to our security is tremendous and is truly our strategic cornerstone.”“The relationship between the United States and Israel is based on shared values and interests, and is clearly expressed in the strong ties between our defense establishments, armed forces and intelligence agencies.”In addition to thanking the “American people” and Congress, Ya’alon expressed gratitude to “President Barack Obama…for your contribution and commitment to our security. There is no truer friend of Israel than the United States of America – and no difference of opinion can harm this relationship.”-Shows of mutual affinity and the F-35-On Wednesday, the two are scheduled to visit a naval air station outside of Washington DC where they will observe a demonstration of the F-35 Lightening II fighter airplane. Israel was an early buyer of the plane and is slated to receive its first shipment of the cutting-edge airplane in 2016. IAF pilots have already begun training for service with the F-35, which will be known in Hebrew as the “Adir” and is considered to be 15 technology-years more advanced than Israel’s current fighter aircraft. The development of the F-35 has been plagued by budgetary and technical challenges, including an ejection seat that apparently can kill pilots who weigh under 200 lbs, but also includes technologies that make it vie with the American-produced F-22 for the title of most advanced fighter airplane in the world. On display Wednesday will be the $400,000 custom-fit helmets which provide pilots with a 360-degree view of their aircraft’s surroundings. Ya’alon and Carter will have a chance to personally test out the technology on the ground. In keeping the visit focused on professional-level security ties, Ya’alon may avoid the minefield he walked in to during a visit exactly one year ago this week.During that October trip to Washington, Ya’alon met with then-defense secretary Chuck Hagel, but was denied meetings at the State Department and the White House, including with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Advisor Susan Rice.Ya’alon’s problems in the US capital came after a report in Yedioth Ahronoth quoted him as saying that Kerry should “take his Nobel Prize and leave us alone.”Although Ya’alon made lukewarm conciliatory statements before his October 2014 visit, the snubs added to the then-growing feelings of open tensions between the two administrations.“The US assists Israel in a variety of areas, most prominently of course in the field of security, and we must remember that and acknowledge its leaders and thank them for this,” his statement issued at the time read. “The respective defense establishments in both countries have a relationship whose intimacy is unprecedented in scope and importance for Israel’s security.”This year, the visit is part of a chain of shows of mutual affinity that – at least on the surface – emphasize that the tensions that emerged following the collapse of the last round of peace talks in spring 2014 and the Iranian nuclear deal reached in July of this year are behind the two administrations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on November 9, and just last week, another fierce critic of the Iran deal – Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz – held consultations with his American counterpart, Ernst Moniz. While Steinitz traveled to Washington, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford, visited Israel on his first official overseas visit since he took the reins of the US military October 1.
