Interior Minister Aryeh Deri on Sunday moved to strip two residents of East Jerusalem of their Israeli citizenship and residency status for their involvement with the Islamic State terror group.Deri asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to revoke the citizenship of Luqman Atun, 24, who is a resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Tsur Baher. Atun flew to Turkey in October 2014, but didn’t have enough money to be taken to the Syrian border.The interior minister also requested that the permanent residency status of East Jerusalemite Khalil Adel Khalil, 26, be revoked. YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — The Vatican on Sunday strongly dismissed Turkish claims that Pope Francis has adopted a “Crusades” mentality by recognizing the Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians, insisting that Francis’s three-day visit to the Orthodox country was one of peace and reconciliation.Francis wrapped up his trip with calls for closer ties with Armenia’s Oriental Orthodox church and a joint declaration with the Apostolic Church leader on the plight of Christians in the Mideast. The pope and Armenian patriarch also visited a monastery near Armenia’s closed western border with Turkey, where they released two white doves of peace.But it was Francis’ recognition on his first day that the 1915 slaughter by Ottoman Turks of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians constituted planned genocide that continued to reverberate.Turkey issued a harsh rebuttal late Saturday, with Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli calling the comments untrue, “greatly unfortunate” and saying they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.”Turkey rejects the term genocide, saying the death toll cited by historians is inflated and that people died on both sides as the Ottoman Empire collapsed amid World War I. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday said his group would not be affected by fresh US sanctions because it receives its money directly from Iran, not via Lebanese banks.In a speech broadcast by the Shiite party’s Al-Manar station, Nasrallah brushed off assertions that Hezbollah would be hurt by US sanctions on Lebanese financial institutions that work with the group.“We do not have any business projects or investments via banks,” Nasrallah said, insisting the group “will not be affected.”“We are open about the fact that Hezbollah’s budget, its income, its expenses, everything it eats and drinks, its weapons and rockets, are from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he added.Iran was instrumental in Hezbollah’s inception three decades ago and has provided financial and military support to the group.In December, the US Congress voted to impose sanctions on banks that deal with Hezbollah, considered a “terrorist group” by the US.And last month, Lebanon’s central bank instructed the country’s banks and financial institutions to comply with the new measure against the Lebanese Shiite group.Hezbollah has fiercely criticized the law and accused central bank governor Riad Salameh of “yielding” to Washington’s demands.“As long as Iran has money, we have money… Just as we receive the rockets that we use to threaten Israel, we are receiving our money. A Jordanian court on Sunday charged 21 people with carrying out “terrorist acts” after their arrest in an operation against jihadists in the country’s north in March, a prosecutor said.The State Security Court accused them of committing “terrorist acts that led to deaths,” making explosives and possessing weapons, the official Petra news agency quoted the court’s chief prosecutor as saying.The agency did not say when their trial would begin.In March, Jordan announced it had foiled a plot by the Islamic State jihadist group to carry out attacks in the kingdom in an operation in the city of Irbid.IS had being planning to target “civilian and military sites,” the authorities said, adding seven jihadists were killed and around 20 arrested in the operation.Two deadly attacks targeting security forces rocked the kingdom this month.On Tuesday, a suicide bomber killed seven soldiers in an area where thousands of Syrian refugees are stranded near the Syrian border.The bombing came two weeks after a gunman, who was later arrested, killed five Jordanian intelligence officers in a Palestinian refugee camp north of the capital.Jordan is part of the US-led coalition fighting IS in Syria and Iraq.

As Israel and Ankara reportedly near a deal on normalizing ties, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday met the leader of Palestinian terrorist group Hamas for unscheduled talks.Erdogan received the Doha-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, whose group rules the Gaza Strip, at the Ottoman-era Yildiz Palace in Istanbul, the official Anadolu Agency reported, quoting presidential sources.Turkish press reports have said Israel and Turkey could hold final talks on normalizing ties on Sunday but this has yet to be confirmed.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday there was a “large possibility” the negotiations would take place by the end of this month.Anadolu said Erdogan and Mashaal discussed how to ease the humanitarian problems of the Palestinians and how to bridge the differences between Hamas and the other main Palestinian group Fatah, which controls the Palestinian Authority-The report made no reference to the Turkish talks with Israel.Previously tight relations between Israel and key NATO member Turkey were significantly downgraded in 2010 after IDF commandos raided a Turkish vessel that was trying to run the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza, The soldiers were attacked by passengers and killed nine Turkish civilians in the ensuing melee. A tenth died later.Two of Turkey’s key conditions for normalization — an apology and compensation — were largely met, leaving its third demand, that Israel lift its blockade on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, as the main obstacle.Channel 2 reported Thursday that under the deal the blockade on the Gaza Strip will continue, but Turkey will be allowed to send equipment and goods via the Israeli port of Ashdod and from there to Gaza. In addition, Turkey is to build a power station, a desalination plant and a hospital in the Strip.Senior officials said the details of the deal have been coordinated with Egypt, according to the report.

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — The Vatican on Sunday strongly dismissed Turkish claims that Pope Francis has adopted a “Crusades” mentality by recognizing the Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians, insisting that Francis’s three-day visit to the Orthodox country was one of peace and reconciliation.Francis wrapped up his trip with calls for closer ties with Armenia’s Oriental Orthodox church and a joint declaration with the Apostolic Church leader on the plight of Christians in the Mideast. The pope and Armenian patriarch also visited a monastery near Armenia’s closed western border with Turkey, where they released two white doves of peace.But it was Francis’ recognition on his first day that the 1915 slaughter by Ottoman Turks of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians constituted planned genocide that continued to reverberate.Turkey issued a harsh rebuttal late Saturday, with Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli calling the comments untrue, “greatly unfortunate” and saying they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.”Turkey rejects the term genocide, saying the death toll cited by historians is inflated and that people died on both sides as the Ottoman Empire collapsed amid World War I. When Francis first used it last year, Turkey recalled its ambassador for 10 months and accused the pope of spreading lies.The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Holy See hadn’t received any formal complaint from Turkey as of Sunday. During the 2-hour service celebrated by Karekin, Francis stood to the side of the altar and offered a greeting calling for greater unity between the two churches.“May an ardent desire for unity rise up in our hearts, a unity that must not be the submission of one to the other, or assimilation, but rather the acceptance of all the gifts that God has given to each,” he said. “Let us pay heed to the younger generation, who seek a future free of past divisions.”He then asked Karekin to bless him: “Bless me, bless me and the Catholic Church, and bless this path toward full unity.”The Armenian Apostolic church and a few other Oriental Orthodox churches split from the Catholic Church in the 5th century in a dispute over the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ. The division arose some six centuries before the Great Schism that split the rest of Orthodoxy from Rome.While still divided over the primacy of the pope, the Apostolic and Catholic churches have friendly relations. Francis and his papal delegation stayed at the Etchmiadzin cathedral complex as guests of Karekin.Still, there have been tensions: Francis and Karekin were supposed to have signed a joint declaration on their improved ties but that was taken off the agenda. Instead the two men expressed their joint concern for Islamic extremist attacks against Christians in the Middle East.“The martyrs belong to all the churches and their suffering is an ‘ecumenism of blood’ which transcends the historical divisions between Christians, calling us all to promote the visible unity of Christ’s disciples,” the declaration read.It repeated a line from a 2001 declaration penned by St. John Paul II and Karekin that the slaughter of Armenians was the “first genocide of the 20th century,” and hailed the progress made in warming relations.After Sunday’s liturgy and a formal luncheon, Francis headed west toward Armenia’s border with Turkey to visit the Khor Virap monastery, one of the most sacred sites in Armenia. The monastery lies in the shadow of Mt. Ararat, where, according to legend, Noah landed his Ark after the great floods. He and Karekin simultaneously released two white doves in a message of peace.Turkey closed the border with Armenia in support for its ally and ethnic kin, Azerbaijan, after the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into a full-scale war in 1992. The blockade has worsened Armenia’s economic problems. Nagorno-Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan, but since a separatist war ended in 1994 it has been under the control of forces that claim to be local ethnic Armenians but that Azerbaijan claims include regular Armenian military.Francis has said he would love to see the Turkish-Armenian border reopened, given his longstanding call for countries to build bridges, not walls.The final declaration expressed hope that a peaceful resolution would be found to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
