Ya’alon: Netanyahu was prepared to cede Jordan
Valley-Likud party spars with former defense minister after he claims PM
was willing to part with strategic area in peace deal-By Ilan Ben Zion
July 27, 2016, 7:48 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Former defense
minister Moshe Ya’alon traded barbs with the Likud party Wednesday
after claiming that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to cede
control over the Jordan Valley as part of a peace deal with the
Palestinians. Netanyahu’s Likud party dismissed the allegation. In a
speech at Bar Ilan University, Ya’alon said that unlike Netanyahu, “I
wouldn’t give up complete Israeli control over the Jordan Valley and
Jewish settlements in the West Bank and all of Jerusalem.”Throughout the
last round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians that
ended in a stalemate in 2014, Netanyahu insisted that Israel maintain a
long-term military presence in the Jordan Valley under any agreement
with the Palestinians. But Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
publicly stated that he would only accept a three-year Israeli presence
in the strategic region running along the border with Jordan.During the
nine-month-long negotiations with the Palestinians, Ya’alon dismissed
the American security proposal as “not worth the paper it’s written on”
in a closed-door meeting with colleagues leaked to the press. “Only our
continued presence in Judea and Samaria and on the Jordan River will
ensure that Ben Gurion Airport and Netanya will not become targets for
missiles from every which way,” he said at the time.“Among us on the
right there are leaders today who would be satisfied with military
presence alone,” he said. “Where have we come?”Ya’alon, a former IDF
chief of staff and Netanyahu’s defense minister for over three years,
until his dismissal earlier this year in a cabinet reshuffle, has since
butted heads with his former political ally, throwing down the gauntlet
earlier this summer with an announcement that he’d challenge Netanyahu
for the premiership in the next elections. The Likud party shot back at
its former senior member, saying, “This is the same [Ya’alon] who said
over the course of a few months that Iran was a concern for the
existence of Israel, and when the defense portfolio was taken from him
he changed his version.“He’s prepared to say anything today for someone
to remember he exists,” the party said in a statement. “We won’t be
surprised if next week he says that Netanyahu accepted the Uganda Scheme
and that thanks to him we remained in Israel, just to grab some more
headlines.”The party was alluding to the plan in the early 1900s to
establish a Jewish state in British East Africa instead of Ottoman
Palestine, which was ultimately rejected by the Zionist Congress.Ya’alon
shot back sardonically on Twitter, saying Netanyahu “accepted the
Uganda Scheme, and only thanks to me we remained in Israel. Someone here
is under pressure.”
Mashaal: Hamas is no IS, will accept
state based on ’67 lines-Palestinian terror group’s political chief
rejects terrorist label, even as he justifies rocket fire from civilian
areas, demands ‘right of return’-By Times of Israel staff July 27, 2016,
3:07 pm
Khaled Mashaal does not believe that Hamas is a
terrorist organization, and would be prepared to accept a Palestinian
state along the pre-1967 lines with Jerusalem as its capital and with
the “right of return” for Palestinian refugees, he told India’s
English-language New Delhi Television (NDTV) station .Speaking from his
home in Doha, Qatar in an interview aired on July 18, Mashaal stated
that Hamas would accept a Palestinian state along 1967 borders.“We are
keen to unify the Palestinian front, the Arab front and attract the
support of the world for our rights. And that’s why we have agreed in
consensus among us Palestinians on a national program that is supported
by the Arabs on establishing a sovereign independent Palestinian state
along the lines of the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital, with
the right of return for the Palestinians in exile,” he said, according
to a translation provided by NDTV. His statement contradicts the
infamous Hamas charter, which states that the movement “strives to raise
the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine.” The Palestinian
demand for a “right of return” for millions of Palestinians — refugees
and their descendants — would also remake Israel’s demography and wipe
out its Jewish majority, and as such is a demand flatly rejected by
Israeli governments.Hamas, which is designated a terror group by Israel
and the US, has been the de facto ruler of the Gaza Strip since it
seized power in a bloody internecine battle against Mahmoud Abbas’s
Fatah movement in 2007.Mashaal rejected comparison to the Islamic State
and dismissed claims that Hamas is a terrorist organization. There is,
he said, a fundamental difference between “legitimate resistance” and
terror on the basis of religion.“[Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and
the Israelis have always thrown those allegations against our people,
since they are the real terrorists,” he said. “There is a vast
difference between us as a national liberation movement, a legitimate
resistance against [Israeli] occupation, which is a right reserved for
all people under occupation in international law, in the divine faiths,
in all human experience. We are against those random killing extremist
movements who are killing on the basis of religion or faith or sect.”In
the past, Mashaal has, however, praised terror numerous occasions, and
as recently as last December reiterated that jihad is the only option
available to his people.“The Palestinians have reached the realization
that negotiations with the (Israelis) are useless,” he said during a
visit to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lampur on December 10. “The
so-called peace process is futile. There is no peace. Only the path of
jihad, sacrifice, and blood (will bear fruit).”In his recent interview,
Mashaal also defended Hamas fighters’ practice in Gaza of using human
shields and its habit of firing rockets from civilian areas
indiscrimnately into Israel — most recently during the 2014 conflict
with the IDF, known by Israelis as Operation Protective Edge.“Gaza is a
very small area… condensed with its occupants,” he said. “The resistance
has the right to choose places where they can cover up their defensive
weaponry to respond to the aggression of the enemy.”Despite his
ostensible willingness for compromise, Mashaal said that negotiations
with Israel were currently doomed to fail due to Israeli
intransigence.“The Palestinian Authority is negotiating. It has been
engaging in this process for a long time,” he said. “But the Israelis
are denying them that basis [for a deal]. That’s why the negotiation
process has been useless. It’s just been a mirage for repression.”
Palestinians
gear up to sue the UK – over 1917 Balfour Declaration-PA top diplomat
tells Arab League that Britain is responsible for all ‘Israeli crimes’
committed since the end of the mandate in 1948-By Times of Israel staff
and AFP July 25, 2016, 8:47 pm
The Palestinian Authority
is preparing a lawsuit against the British government over the issuing
of the 1917 Balfour Declaration that paved the way for the creation of
the State of Israel. The PA’s Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki told Arab
League leaders gathered in Mauritania Monday that London is responsible
for all “Israeli crimes” committed since the end of the British mandate
in 1948.Signed by British Foreign Secretary Lord Arthur James Balfour in
1917, the declaration was seen as giving the Zionist movement official
recognition and backing on the part of a major power, on the eve of the
British conquest of the then-Ottoman territory of Palestine. The
decision, al-Malki said, “gave people who don’t belong there something
that wasn’t theirs.”There was no immediate reaction from Britain.A
report in the official Wafa news agency did not note where the PA plans
to file the lawsuit.Last year, a group calling itself the Popular
Palestinian Campaign to Sue the United Kingdom sued the UK in an
Egyptian court. In 2008, a Palestinian youth group said it would attempt
to sue the UK over the Balfour Declaration in Britain or in the ICC.It
was not clear if either effort bore fruit. On Monday, the Arab League
summit, despite splits over Iran and Turkey, was cut back to a single
day due to the ongoing absence of the heavyweight leaders of Egypt and
Saudi Arabia.Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi stayed at home
because of “a busy domestic schedule” — amid unconfirmed reports of an
assassination plot against him — while Saudi King Salman’s no-show was
due to “health reasons,” an Arab League source told AFP.Mauritania’s
head of state Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is hosting the summit,
slammed the “blind violence of terrorists,” as well as foreign
interventions that feed instability in the Arab world. The Mauritanian
president also called for fresh efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, saying that regional instability would continue until the
issue was settled.Arab foreign ministers meeting ahead of the summit on
Saturday urged a “definitive solution” to the conflict and welcomed a
French and Egyptian initiative to help revive dormant peace talks.Joshua
Davidovich contributed to this report.
In Netanyahu’s new
illustrated world, Israel has just five enemies-The PM this week
prepared a map to show MKs how he sees Israel’s place among the nations.
It makes for fascinating, and surprisingly optimistic, viewing-By
Raphael Ahren July 27, 2016, 4:17 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu loves maps. Considering them a helpful tool
to illustrate his view of global affairs, he often brings them along to
public speeches, to briefings with the press and to hearings in the
Knesset.“May I reveal to the members of the press that there is a big
map in my office, and it’s been made bigger,” he said last week during a
meeting with Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes in Jerusalem. “It used
to be the Middle East. Now it encompasses a good chunk of the Eastern
hemisphere.”The map of the world Netanyahu brandished Monday at the
Knesset State Control Committee, where he defended his foreign policy
record, offers some valuable insights into his view of Israel’s place
among the family of nations. (A quarter-century ago, as he was rising to
become the leader of the then-Likud opposition, Netanyahu published a
book entitled, “A Place Among the Nations: Israel in the World.”) The
map, a copy of which was made available to The Times of Israel, is meant
to highlight positive trends in Israel’s foreign relations. It divides
the world’s countries into different categories: those with which
Jerusalem has “recently developed/upgraded” relations are marked in red;
states that entertain “good relations” with Israel are in blue; and
“overtly hostile enemy states” are in black. With the rest of the world,
in green, “Israel does not have special relations,” according to the
prime minister’s aides, who created the map especially for Monday’s
Knesset session. The prime minister is widely regarded as having a fairly
bleak outlook when it comes to the international community’s relations
with Israel, or perhaps more accurately as regards the dependability of
certain allies, but his new map actually belies this. Drawn up for the
specific political purpose of asserting that global ties are flourishing
under the current foreign minister (Netanyahu), the multi-colored
message, overall, is that Israel has lots and lots and lots of friends.
And, most remarkably, that even among those nations that might think of
themselves as deeply hostile to the Jewish state, only very few are
deemed to merit the black mark of a real enemy. The countries in red are
those the prime minister sought to highlight as they ostensibly prove
the success of his foreign policy. Those eye-catching red patches
indicate improved ties with diplomatic and economic powerhouses such as
Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, Singapore and India; increasing
cooperation with Greece and Cyprus; normalization with Turkey; and
robust ties with Azerbaijan, which Netanyahu plans to visit soon. A
striking omission from this category is Egypt, which the map shows in
green despite a noticeable rapprochement between Cairo and Jerusalem.Ten
countries in Africa are colored red: Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya,
(states Netanyahu visited earlier this month) Tanzania (which recently
announced its intention to open its first-ever embassy in Israel),
Guinea (which last week re-established diplomatic ties with Jerusalem
after a 49-year hiatus), Chad (where Foreign Ministry director-general
Dore Gold visited last week), South Sudan, Zambia and Ivory Coast. In
August 2015, Netanyahu declared Latin America to be “one of the main
objectives of the State of Israel in the context of its efforts to
develop markets that will contribute to increasing economic growth.” As
things stand, on his map, only three countries there are marked red:
Colombia, Paraguay and Argentina.Brazil, the world’s seventh largest
economy — with which Israel seeks to further develop commercial ties,
but with which it had a diplomatic falling out over the aborted
appointment of ex-settler leader Dani Dayan — appears in green,
signifying the absence of “special relations.”Mexico, Chile, Panama and
South Africa — countries that have full diplomatic ties with Israel and
significant Jewish communities — are likewise in green. There are plenty
of obvious and some interesting inclusions among the countries colored
blue on Netanyahu’s map, signaling “good relations” with Israel: The
United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (despite a recent
diplomatic spat) and all of Europe — East and West — despite ongoing
tension over the European Union’s critical approach to Israeli policies
vis-a-vis the Palestinians and other differences. But two European
countries are singled out as a little less friendly than the others:
Sweden and Ireland appear in light blue, illustrating their particularly
critical attitudes toward Israel. Sweden is the only Western European
nation that recognized a Palestinian state, but what Ireland did to
deserve a lighter shade of blue than similarly pro-Palestinian EU member
states is somewhat unclear. (Denmark is also in light blue but this
appears to be a technical error).“Today Israel is perceived more and
more as an asset and an influencing element in the world because of our
war on terror and our technological achievements,” Netanyahu told the
State Control Committee on Monday.”We have achieved free trade with
China, a 30 percent increase in trade with India, an agreement with
Japan on protecting rigs, military coordination with Russia, initial
ties with a host of African countries, heads of state visiting Israel
for the first time, the normalization of ties with Turkey, and every
week I meet with four heads of state. Israel’s foreign policy is a great
success,” he declared.A map Netanyahu showed the 2015 AIPAC summit in
Washington, DC, to illustrate Iran’s ‘tentacles of terror’-And what
about those countries that do not perceive Israel as an asset and a
positive influence? On his map, which he waved around several times
during Monday’s two-hour session, only five countries are colored in
black, thus identified as enemy states: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan
and North Korea. (Lebanon’s status is indiscernible). Perhaps most
instructive about this category is those nations it does not include:
Yemen, Saudi Arabia (both countries Israelis are forbidden by law from
entering), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman,
Sudan, Pakistan, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Indonesia, Cuba, Venezuela and
other states with which Israel does not have diplomatic ties. Thus one
conclusion students of Netanyahu’s map might be forgiven for drawing is
this: Israel has plenty of friends in the world — about 30 old friends,
20 new friends, countless of potential future friends — and very, very
few enemies.
Sanders campaign chair: Bernie wants ‘fresh
thinking’ on Israel-Palestinian conflict-After endorsing Hillary
Clinton, Vermont senator seeks to give US policy on region ‘a new look,’
Jeff Weaver says-By Eric Cortellessa July 27, 2016, 6:01 pm-THE TIMES
OF ISRAEL
PHILADELPHIA — Shortly after Bernie Sanders
unequivocally endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton
at the party’s national convention Monday night, his campaign chair said
the Vermont senator would continue to encourage “fresh thinking” on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the Sanders camp has taken steps in
recent days to project an image of party unity and shepherd its
grassroots base into the Clinton coalition for the general election,
Jeff Weaver acknowledged that differences remained between the former
rivals vis-a-vis the region, but that Sanders would “stress issues where
they are very much together.”Sanders does not intend to highlight any
variations between his camp’s stance on the Israel-Palestinian conflict
and that of the former secretary of state during the coming five months,
Weaver said, but would advocate the US policy take “a new look” on the
enduring issue.“He knows we’ll have to work through this,” Weaver told
The Times of Israel on Tuesday. “It’s a very difficult situation over
there, obviously. It’s very complicated. And it’s a situation we’re
going to have to work through.”During his speech here, Sanders tried to
persuade his base to back Clinton in November by providing a litany of
shared policy priorities, like expanding Americans’ access to
healthcare, opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade accord and
combating climate change.“If you look at one issue after the other issue
in terms of who the candidate is that we need to lead this country,
there is no debate,” Sanders told his supporters. “The choice in this
campaign is very, very clear, and I think the overwhelming majority of
my supporters will see it that way.”He did not mention matters of
foreign policy; Weaver indicated that those differences were far less
acute than Sanders’s differences with Republican nominee Donald Trump,
which is what the self-avowed democratic socialist wants to highlight
from now until November. He would, however, be willing to advocate his
policy positions, but more likely so after Clinton secures the White
House. “It’s a problem that needs a new look,” he said. “There hasn’t
been a lot of progress in recent years, and I know that Sen. Sanders
thinks we have to kick-start it, so I’m sure he’ll have that discussion
with Sec. Clinton if there’s a time when he feels that’s
appropriate.”During the primary, Clinton and Sanders clashed on the
Israel issue, with Sanders accusing his former rival of not putting
enough focus on the plight of the Palestinians in her speech at the
AIPAC Policy Conference. “I heard virtually no discussion at all about
the needs of the Palestinian people,” Sanders said. “Almost none in that
speech.”They also differed on how to classify Israel’s military
operations during the 2014 war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with
Sanders calling Israel’s conduct “disproportionate” and Clinton
defending the Jewish state’s right to defend itself from indiscriminate
rocket attacks. But none of those disputes have been on display between
the two campaigns this week, as they have attempted to join forces, even
after DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned amid an email scandal
that proved a bias for Clinton during the primary and revealed internal
deliberations over how to undermine Sanders’ candidacy.Weaver, for his
part, said Sanders supporters should not linger on those revelations,
despite his having accused the DNC of playing favorites for
months.“Debbie Wasserman Schultz has resigned, it’s time to move on,” he
said. “It’s time to unify the party and go out and beat Donald Trump.
And that’s what we’re going to do.”
Protesters burn Israeli
flag outside Democratic convention-Demonstrators in Philadelphia chant
‘Long live the intifada,’ also set light to pro-Bernie Sanders fliers-By
AP July 27, 2016, 9:05 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
PHILADELPHIA
— Protesters set an Israeli flag on fire and chanted “Long live the
intifada” outside of the Democratic National Convention site in
Philadelphia on Tuesday night, as others clashed with police.A woman
wearing a black bandana on her face lit the flag on fire, as protests
continued outside of the secure zone around the Wells Fargo Center in
Philadelphia. Someone stood nearby waving a Palestinian flag.Protesters
also set alight pro-Bernie Sanders fliers that were hanging on steel
fencing around the site.Meanwhile, die-hard Sanders loyalists
demonstrated inside and outside the Wells Fargo Center, where the
convention is taking place, and clashed with police after Hillary
Clinton won the party’s presidential nomination Tuesday.Despite calls by
the liberal Vermont senator for them to support the nominee, thousands
of activists have taken to the streets during the convention to voice
support for Sanders and his progressive agenda.Moments after Clinton
became the first woman to ever be nominated for president by a major US
political party, a large group of Sanders delegates and supporters
exited the site to hold a sit-in inside a media tent. Some had their
mouths taped shut. A few spontaneously sang the chorus of the folk song
“This Land Is Your Land,” and a banner read “We the people.” They said
they were holding a peaceful protest to complain about being shut out by
the Democratic Party.“This was not a convention. This was a four-day
Hillary party. And we weren’t welcome,” said Liz Maratea, a New Jersey
delegate at the media tent protest. “We were treated like lepers.”In the
streets outside, Sanders supporters who had spent the day protesting
began facing off with police. Protesters began scaling eight-foot-high
walls blocking off the secure zone around the arena parking lot, and
several were detained. An officer sprayed one of the protesters.
Israeli
archaeologist says he was attacked on Temple Mount-Two Jerusalem
Islamic Waqf members arrested after clash with group visiting Jerusalem
holy site-By Stuart Winer and Ilan Ben Zion July 27, 2016, 2:48 pm-THE
TIMES OF ISRAEL
Two members of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf
were arrested Wednesday after allegedly attacking Israeli archaeologist
Zachi Dvira on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem.A group of
six Israeli archaeologists were attacked by eight Waqf members as the
they toured the holy site, the Hebrew language Ynet website reported.
The clash began after the Israeli group refused to leave the compound
when ordered to do so by the Waqf personnel.Dvira, who is in involved in
the Temple Mount sifting project, told Ynet “it looked like the start
of a lynching.” He was not injured in the assault. The two Waqf members
were taken away for questioning by police.Israeli archaeologists say
Waqf workers have carted off hundreds of tons of artifact-laden earth
from the Temple Mount during renovations and construction work in the
compound that also contains the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the
Rock.A project, led by Dvira and others, to sift through debris dumped
in the Kidron Valley outside the Old City has rescued many artifacts
from the Second Temple and other periods.Jews regard the Temple Mount as
their holiest site, where the First and Second Temple were located.
Muslims call it the Noble Sanctuary and regard it as their third holiest
site after Mecca and Medina. According to the existing arrangement, the
Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, or trust, administers the Temple Mount
complex. There have been frequent and often violent clashes between Arab
protesters and Jews over Jewish rights to visit the site. Jews are not
allowed to pray there, under arrangements agreed by Israel after it
captured the area in the 1967 war.
