The Israel Air Force conducted 50 airstrikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip late Sunday night, following a rocket fired into Israel by Palestinian terrorists earlier that day, but was not seeking an escalation in hostilities, an Israeli official said on Monday.“There were approximately 50 airstrikes within two hours. There is no intention to escalate the situation further, and that is basically where the situation falls at this time,” a senior military official told The Times of Israel.Palestinian security sources in Gaza said several targets in the northern Strip were struck by Israeli fire, and that a reservoir in Beit Hanoun was damaged. Israel also hit a base belonging to Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in nearby Beit Lahiya, witnesses said. Palestinian health and security sources said between two and five people were lightly wounded by Israel’s retaliatory fire.This was the second Israeli bombardment of the day. Immediately following the rocket attack from the Gaza Strip on Sunday afternoon, Israeli aircraft and tanks also targeted Hamas installations in the northern Gaza Strip.After the late-night airstrikes, the Islamist Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip blamed Israel for escalating tensions in the Palestinian enclave.“The escalation shows Israel’s desire to change the status quo in the Gaza Strip,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said Sunday night.“We hold Israel responsible for the escalation in the Gaza Strip and we stress that its aggression will not succeed in breaking the will of our people or dictate the terms of resistance,” Zuhri said. A mortar round hit a minefield on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights on Monday, causing no damage or injuries, but drawing an Israeli retaliatory strike, the IDF said.The explosion was apparently caused by a stray shell fired during fighting in Syria, according to a military official.The IDF said the shell struck the central Golan Heights, close to the security fence with Syria.In response, the IAF targeted a Syrian army launcher on the Syrian side of the Golan.The Syrian Golan has been the site of intense fighting in recent years between Assad regime forces and the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate.More recently, the area has seen burgeoning activity by Hezbollah and Iran’s al-Quds Force aimed at opening a new potential front against Israel in any future conflict.A number of mortars have landed in Israeli territory as a result of spillover fighting over the last several years, raising fears among residents near the border.The IDF often responds to fire that crosses into Israel by striking Syrian army posts.Israel maintains a policy of holding Damascus responsible for all fire from Syria into Israel regardless of the source of the fire.

The Foreign Ministry on Monday issued a biting rejoinder to Turkey’s condemnation of Sunday night’s strikes on Hamas sites in Gaza, warning Turkey to “think twice” before criticizing others.The bitter exchange cast a shadow over a recently confirmed reconciliation pact between the countries and indicated how far Jerusalem and Ankara must still go before erasing years of soured relations.On Monday morning, Turkey’s foreign ministry said newly restored ties between Israel and Turkey have not changed Ankara’s position on the Palestinians, and condemned Israeli actions that it said “violate the law and human conscience.”Israel’s response was a taunting mirror image of Turkey’s critique.“The normalization of our relations with Turkey does not mean that we will remain silent in the face of its baseless condemnations. The Egyptian foreign ministry denied reports that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry recently said that the killing of Palestinian children by Israel did not amount to terrorism.Shoukry drew criticism from Gaza’s Hamas rulers on Monday after reports surfaced according to which he told a group of high schoolers visiting the foreign ministry’s headquarters in Cairo that Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians don’t amount to “terrorism.”According to reports in several Arab media outlets Monday, Shoukry was asked if Israeli policies amounted to terrorism.“You can look at [the question of Israeli ‘terrorism’] from the perspective of a regime of force, but [looked at from a more traditional understanding] there is no evidence showing a link between Israel and armed terrorist groups,” Shoukry reportedly said.One London-based newspaper critical of the Sissi government in Cairo, Al-Araby al-Jadeeda, headlined its report “Killing of Palestinian children does not constitute terrorism” –though that comment does not appear in the original reports of Shoukry’s comments.According to a statement by the foreign ministry in Cairo, Shoukry never spoke about the killing of Palestinian children, and his comments were distorted by critics of his government. In a limestone cave halfway between Nazareth and the biblical town of Cana, archaeologists recently unearthed a first century CE workshop that produced stone vessels similar to those that held the water Jesus turned into wine.Several stone bowls and cups in various stages of completion were found in the bowels of the cave, suggesting the cave may have been been home to an active stone goods manufactory. The site, known today as Einot Amitai, is the first stoneware manufacturing site of its kind to be found in the Galilee from the Second Temple Era, researchers said.While evidence of chalkstone vessel production has been found at other sites in the Galilee, only at Einot Amitai have archaeologists found a quarry and workshop where they were made.The cave was found in 2001 when residents of the nearby town were bulldozing a plot of land and breached the cavern. A limited survey of the site indicated it may have been involved in the production of limestone goods, but archaeologists only launched a more comprehensive dig this August.Chalkstone vessels became popular in Judea in the mid-second century BCE and remained in use into the Roman period. Archaeologists from Ariel University and the University of Malta who carried out the dig sought to determine whether the production of stone vessels continued in the Galilee after the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome in 135 CE.Fragments of bowls, plates and cups made of stone have been found at Jewish settlements throughout Judea, but very few turn up in non-Jewish contexts from the period, suggesting a possible religious motivation for their use, Yonatan Adler of Ariel University, an expert in ancient Jewish ritual law who headed the dig, said.During the first centuries BCE and CE, various streams of Judaism became obsessed with the notion of ritual purity. Unlike ceramics, stone couldn’t take on ritual impurity, making it an ideal material for kitchen utensils.“Stone vessels played an integral role in the daily religious lives of Jews during this period,” Adler argued. Perhaps because stone wasn’t among the materials mentioned in the Levitic purity codes it was deemed an exception. Either way, he said in a statement released by the university, “It was a Jewish ‘Stone Age’ of sorts.”Other scholars argue stone vessels’ popularity during the period was linked to “a desire to reinforce their self-identity,” choosing simple local products over imported luxury goods, Hebrew University’s Zeev Weiss wrote in 2015.Stone jars find mention in the New Testament, when the Book of John recounts that at the wedding at Cana “standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.”We all know what Jesus does with the water. But what Adler suggests is that “it is certainly possible – perhaps even likely – that large stone containers of the type mentioned in the Wedding at Cana story may have been produced locally in Galilee in a cave similar to the one we are now excavating.” The modern town of Kafr Kanna, just a mile north of the cave, is identified with the biblical Cana, after all.For now, excavations of the cave have only yielded stone mugs and small bowls, nothing of the size mentioned in the Book of John.“Fragments of large jars have not been unearthed,” said Dr. Dennis Mizzi, of the University of Malta, cautiously in a statement.Archaeologists plan additional excavations next summer.

BURGOS, Spain (AFP) — It’s one of the world’s most mysterious books, a centuries-old manuscript written in an unknown or coded language that no one — not even the best cryptographers — has cracked.Scholars have spent their lives puzzling over the Voynich Manuscript, whose intriguing mix of elegant writing and drawings of strange plants and naked women has some believing it holds magical powers.The weathered book is locked away in a vault at Yale University’s Beinecke Library, emerging only occasionally.But after a ten-year quest for access, Siloe, a small publishing house nestled deep in northern Spain, has secured the right to clone the document — to the delight of its director.“Touching the Voynich is an experience,” says Juan Jose Garcia, sitting on the top floor of a book museum in the quaint center of Burgos where Siloe’s office is, a few paved streets away from the city’s famed Gothic cathedral.“It’s a book that has such an aura of mystery that when you see it for the first time… it fills you with an emotion that is very hard to describe.”-Eternal youth? Da Vinci?-Siloe, which specializes in making facsimiles of old manuscripts, has bought the rights to make 898 exact replicas of the Voynich — so faithful that every stain, hole, sewn-up tear in the parchment will be reproduced.The company always publishes 898 replicas of each work it clones — a number which is a palindrome, or a figure that reads the same backwards or forwards — after the success of their first facsimile, which they made 696 copies of, another palindrome.The publishing house plans to sell the facsimiles for 7,000 to 8,000 euros ($7,800 to $8,900) apiece once completed — and close to 300 people have already put in pre-orders.Raymond Clemens, curator at the Beinecke Library, said Yale decided to have facsimiles done because of the many people who want to consult the fragile manuscript.“We thought that the facsimile would provide the look and feel of the original for those who were interested,” he said.“It also enables libraries and museums to have a copy for instructional purposes and we will use the facsimile ourselves to show the manuscript outside of the library to students or others who might be interested.”The manuscript is named after antiquarian Wilfrid Voynich who bought it around 1912 from a collection of books belonging to the Jesuits in Italy, and eventually propelled it into the public eye.Theories abound about who wrote it and what it means.For a long time it was believed to be the work of 13th century English Franciscan friar Roger Bacon, whose interest in alchemy and magic landed him in jail.But that theory was discarded when the manuscript was carbon dated and found to have originated between 1404 and 1438.Others point to a young Leonardo da Vinci, someone who wrote in code to escape the Inquisition, an elaborate joke, or even an alien who left the book behind when leaving Earth.Its content is even more mysterious.The plants drawn have never been identified. The astronomical charts don’t reveal much and neither do the women.Does the book hold the key to eternal youth? Or is it a mere collection of herbal medicine and recipes?-Scores have tried to decode the Voynich, including top cryptologists such as William Friedman who helped break Japan’s “Purple” cipher during World War II.But the only person to have made any headway is… Indiana Jones, who in a novel featuring the fictitious archaeologist manages to crack it.Fiction aside, the Beinecke Library gets thousands of emails every month from people claiming to have decoded it, says Rene Zandbergen, a space engineer who runs a recognized blog on the manuscript, which he has consulted several times.“More than 90 percent of all the access to their digital library is only for the Voynich Manuscript,” he adds.-The art of cloning-Only slightly bigger than a paperback, the book contains over 200 pages including several large fold-outs.It will take Siloe around 18 months to make the first facsimiles, in a painstaking process that started in April when a photographer took detailed snaps of the original in Yale.Workers at Siloe are currently making mock-ups before they finally set about printing out the pages in a way that makes the script and drawings look like the real deal.The paper they use — made from a paste developed by the company — has been given a special treatment so it feels like the stiff parchment used to write the Voynich.Once printed, the pages are put together and made to look older.All the imperfections are re-created using special tools in a process kept firmly secret by Garcia, who in his spare time has also tried his hand at cryptology.“We call it the Voynich Challenge,” he says.“My business partner… says the author of the Voynich could also have been a sadist, as he has us all wrapped up in this mystery.”

There is no intention to escalate the situation further, and that is basically where the situation falls at this time,” a senior military official told The Times of Israel.Palestinian security sources in Gaza said several targets in the northern Strip were struck by Israeli fire, and that a reservoir in Beit Hanoun was damaged. Israel also hit a base belonging to Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in nearby Beit Lahiya, witnesses said. Palestinian health and security sources said between two and five people were lightly wounded by Israel’s retaliatory fire.This was the second Israeli bombardment of the day. The Egyptian foreign ministry denied reports that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry recently said that the killing of Palestinian children by Israel did not amount to terrorism.Shoukry drew criticism from Gaza’s Hamas rulers on Monday after reports surfaced according to which he told a group of high schoolers visiting the foreign ministry’s headquarters in Cairo that Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians don’t amount to “terrorism.”According to reports in several Arab media outlets Monday, Shoukry was asked if Israeli policies amounted to terrorism.“You can look at [the question of Israeli ‘terrorism’] from the perspective of a regime of force, but [looked at from a more traditional understanding] there is no evidence showing a link between Israel and armed terrorist groups,” Shoukry reportedly said.One London-based newspaper critical of the Sissi government in Cairo, Al-Araby al-Jadeeda, headlined its report “Killing of Palestinian children does not constitute terrorism” –though that comment does not appear in the original reports of Shoukry’s comments.According to a statement by the foreign ministry in Cairo, Shoukry never spoke about the killing of Palestinian children, and his comments were distorted by critics of his government. In a limestone cave halfway between Nazareth and the biblical town of Cana, archaeologists recently unearthed a first century CE workshop that produced stone vessels similar to those that held the water Jesus turned into wine.Several stone bowls and cups in various stages of completion were found in the bowels of the cave, suggesting the cave may have been been home to an active stone goods manufactory. The site, known today as Einot Amitai, is the first stoneware manufacturing site of its kind to be found in the Galilee from the Second Temple Era, researchers said.While evidence of chalkstone vessel production has been found at other sites in the Galilee, only at Einot Amitai have archaeologists found a quarry and workshop where they were made.The cave was found in 2001 when residents of the nearby town were bulldozing a plot of land and breached the cavern. A limited survey of the site indicated it may have been involved in the production of limestone goods, but archaeologists only launched a more comprehensive dig this August.Chalkstone vessels became popular in Judea in the mid-second century BCE and remained in use into the Roman period. Archaeologists from Ariel University and the University of Malta who carried out the dig sought to determine whether the production of stone vessels continued in the Galilee after the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome in 135 CE.Fragments of bowls, plates and cups made of stone have been found at Jewish settlements throughout Judea, but very few turn up in non-Jewish contexts from the period, suggesting a possible religious motivation for their use, Yonatan Adler of Ariel University, an expert in ancient Jewish ritual law who headed the dig, said.During the first centuries BCE and CE, various streams of Judaism became obsessed with the notion of ritual purity. Unlike ceramics, stone couldn’t take on ritual impurity, making it an ideal material for kitchen utensils.“Stone vessels played an integral role in the daily religious lives of Jews during this period,” Adler argued. Perhaps because stone wasn’t among the materials mentioned in the Levitic purity codes it was deemed an exception. Either way, he said in a statement released by the university, “It was a Jewish ‘Stone Age’ of sorts.”Other scholars argue stone vessels’ popularity during the period was linked to “a desire to reinforce their self-identity,” choosing simple local products over imported luxury goods, Hebrew University’s Zeev Weiss wrote in 2015.Stone jars find mention in the New Testament, when the Book of John recounts that at the wedding at Cana “standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.”We all know what Jesus does with the water. But what Adler suggests is that “it is certainly possible – perhaps even likely – that large stone containers of the type mentioned in the Wedding at Cana story may have been produced locally in Galilee in a cave similar to the one we are now excavating.” The modern town of Kafr Kanna, just a mile north of the cave, is identified with the biblical Cana, after all.For now, excavations of the cave have only yielded stone mugs and small bowls, nothing of the size mentioned in the Book of John.“Fragments of large jars have not been unearthed,” said Dr. Dennis Mizzi, of the University of Malta, cautiously in a statement.Archaeologists plan additional excavations next summer.

BURGOS, Spain (AFP) — It’s one of the world’s most mysterious books, a centuries-old manuscript written in an unknown or coded language that no one — not even the best cryptographers — has cracked.Scholars have spent their lives puzzling over the Voynich Manuscript, whose intriguing mix of elegant writing and drawings of strange plants and naked women has some believing it holds magical powers.The weathered book is locked away in a vault at Yale University’s Beinecke Library, emerging only occasionally.But after a ten-year quest for access, Siloe, a small publishing house nestled deep in northern Spain, has secured the right to clone the document — to the delight of its director.“Touching the Voynich is an experience,” says Juan Jose Garcia, sitting on the top floor of a book museum in the quaint center of Burgos where Siloe’s office is, a few paved streets away from the city’s famed Gothic cathedral.“It’s a book that has such an aura of mystery that when you see it for the first time… it fills you with an emotion that is very hard to describe.”-Eternal youth? Da Vinci?-Siloe, which specializes in making facsimiles of old manuscripts, has bought the rights to make 898 exact replicas of the Voynich — so faithful that every stain, hole, sewn-up tear in the parchment will be reproduced.The company always publishes 898 replicas of each work it clones — a number which is a palindrome, or a figure that reads the same backwards or forwards — after the success of their first facsimile, which they made 696 copies of, another palindrome.The publishing house plans to sell the facsimiles for 7,000 to 8,000 euros ($7,800 to $8,900) apiece once completed — and close to 300 people have already put in pre-orders.Raymond Clemens, curator at the Beinecke Library, said Yale decided to have facsimiles done because of the many people who want to consult the fragile manuscript.“We thought that the facsimile would provide the look and feel of the original for those who were interested,” he said.“It also enables libraries and museums to have a copy for instructional purposes and we will use the facsimile ourselves to show the manuscript outside of the library to students or others who might be interested.”The manuscript is named after antiquarian Wilfrid Voynich who bought it around 1912 from a collection of books belonging to the Jesuits in Italy, and eventually propelled it into the public eye.Theories abound about who wrote it and what it means.For a long time it was believed to be the work of 13th century English Franciscan friar Roger Bacon, whose interest in alchemy and magic landed him in jail.But that theory was discarded when the manuscript was carbon dated and found to have originated between 1404 and 1438.Others point to a young Leonardo da Vinci, someone who wrote in code to escape the Inquisition, an elaborate joke, or even an alien who left the book behind when leaving Earth.Its content is even more mysterious.The plants drawn have never been identified. The astronomical charts don’t reveal much and neither do the women.Does the book hold the key to eternal youth? Or is it a mere collection of herbal medicine and recipes?-Scores have tried to decode the Voynich, including top cryptologists such as William Friedman who helped break Japan’s “Purple” cipher during World War II.But the only person to have made any headway is… Indiana Jones, who in a novel featuring the fictitious archaeologist manages to crack it.Fiction aside, the Beinecke Library gets thousands of emails every month from people claiming to have decoded it, says Rene Zandbergen, a space engineer who runs a recognized blog on the manuscript, which he has consulted several times.“More than 90 percent of all the access to their digital library is only for the Voynich Manuscript,” he adds.-The art of cloning-Only slightly bigger than a paperback, the book contains over 200 pages including several large fold-outs.It will take Siloe around 18 months to make the first facsimiles, in a painstaking process that started in April when a photographer took detailed snaps of the original in Yale.Workers at Siloe are currently making mock-ups before they finally set about printing out the pages in a way that makes the script and drawings look like the real deal.The paper they use — made from a paste developed by the company — has been given a special treatment so it feels like the stiff parchment used to write the Voynich.Once printed, the pages are put together and made to look older.All the imperfections are re-created using special tools in a process kept firmly secret by Garcia, who in his spare time has also tried his hand at cryptology.“We call it the Voynich Challenge,” he says.“My business partner… says the author of the Voynich could also have been a sadist, as he has us all wrapped up in this mystery.”
