Abbas: PA not on verge of collapse, can only be succeeded by statehood-Palestinian Authority president claims West Bank protests are primarily non-violent, urges Iran nuclear deal-style treaty with Israel-By Times of Israel staff January 6, 2016, 7:45 pm

Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday dismissed talk of the imminent collapse of the Palestinian Authority, the ruling body he heads that was set up by predecessor Yasser Arafat in the 1990s. “No one should dream” of such a scenario, he said, amid reports in Israel that the government has been discussing such a possibility. He stressed that only a Palestinian state would replace the PA.In a speech from the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Abbas called for an international peace summit. He also said that he opposed violence, while maintaining that Palestinian protests were primarily non-violent and slamming Israel for shooting rock- throwers.More than 20 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian acts of terrorism and violence in the past three months. Over 130 Palestinians have been killed, most of them in the act of trying to kill Israelis. Israel has accused the PA of playing a central role in inciting the terror attacks, many of them carried out by young Palestinians, by falsely asserting that Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount is in danger.“There is no scenario of what will happen after the PA… because the PA will stay and any replacement must be a state,” Abbas said, according to a translation by Haaretz. The Palestinian Authority is “one of the Palestinians’ achievements. They won’t give up on it, and no one should dream of its collapse.”The PA president’s comments came a day after Haaretz reported that Israel’s security cabinet has held two meetings in the past 11 days to discuss the possibility of a collapse of the PA. The discussions come as a wave of terror continues across the country and amid rumors of a political crisis within the Palestinian government. The meetings dealt with defense establishment assessments that the Palestinian Authority was “liable” to collapse or disintegrate and that such a scenario would create strenuous demands on Israel, forcing it to take charge of both security and civilian affairs in areas currently controlled by the PA.In his remarks, Abbas said Wednesday that the world must push a Iran nuclear deal-style diplomatic agreement for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.“Just as the world saw to a solution for the Iranian issue and are working toward [a solution] in Syria and Libya — we are the oldest conflict,” Abbas said. “The Quartet failed, and therefore the world must — if it wants to end the conflict — lead an effort by world powers” and organize a diplomatic summit, he said.Abbas also addressed the three-month wave of violence that has targeted Israeli security forces and civilians, reiterating his commitment to non-violence while blasting the IDF.“These are mostly non-violent protests,” Abbas said of the frequent clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians. “Even when they throw stones [at a distance of] 10-20 meters, Israel responds with gunfire from 100 meters away.”“We don’t want our children to be killed, we want them alive,” Abbas said. “We will always support non-violent struggle.”

Palestinian wave of violence marked by increased female role-Some 20 women and girls have been involved in stabbings, leaving families, Israeli army confounded-By Aron Heller and Mohammed Daraghmeh January 6, 2016, 9:15 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

NABLUS, West Bank (AP) — When Palestinian youths began a wave of grassroots and often suicidal stabbing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians several months ago, it wasn’t his three sons that Ramiz Hassoneh was worried about — it was his daughter.Ignoring her father’s warnings, 20-year-old Maram took a kitchen knife to an Israeli military checkpoint on December 1 and was shot dead as she tried to attack the soldiers, according to the Israeli military. The deadly mission put her among some 20 young females who have been involved in attacks on Israelis in recent months — a new trend that has confounded both Palestinian families and Israeli security officials. While battling Israel was once a role restricted to Palestinian men and boys, the current wave of violence has seen an unprecedented spike in female involvement. And where the few women who did engage in attacks in the past were typically underprivileged females seeking redemption after being rejected by their families, the attackers are now largely ideological, educated women from supportive homes.Palestinians consider the trend to be a combination of rising Islamist zeal, the growing role of women in the conservative society and the brewing desperation of a younger generation with few prospects. In Maram’s case, her family said she had a burning drive to resist the Israeli occupation somehow. A top English student at An-Najah University and a devout Muslim, Maram was deeply troubled by TV images showing the death of young Palestinians killed in attacks and clashes with Israel. She had memorized the entire Quran and cited religious and nationalistic motives for her desire to strike at Israelis. Unlike her younger brothers, who busied themselves with daily life, her father said Maram was an independent thinker who couldn’t be swayed from her convictions, even after serving six months in prison for another unsuccessful stabbing attempt on a soldier two years earlier.“Girls are more sensitive to the occupation. They are more emotional about these things,” said Hassoneh, sitting in his Nablus home under a large poster of his late daughter wearing a headscarf. “She believed that she would inspire the boys to do something … She looked at me and said: ‘When our men who sit in coffee shop see (a girl) killed, they will move.'”His wife, Hanan, sitting next to him with a gold necklace featuring Maram’s image, said her sorrow was mixed with pride. “I’m happy she is a martyr, but I miss her a lot,” she said.Since the violence erupted in mid- September, at least 25 Israelis and an American Jew have been killed, mostly in stabbing attacks carried out by young Palestinians in their late teens or 20s. Many attackers were doomed to failure from the start, armed with only crude weapons such as knives, scissors and potato peelers. At least 132 Palestinians have been killed, of whom 11 were women. Israel has identified 91 of the Palestinians killed as attackers; the rest died in clashes with Israeli troops.Israel says the violence is the result of incitement by Palestinian leaders and on social media sites. The Palestinians say it stems from frustration over nearly 50 years of occupation, failed peace talks and continued Israeli settlement construction. In previous rounds of violence, women were expected to stay home while the boys fought. But women’s increased presence online, where most of the rallying cries to violence take place, and general advancement in society have emboldened many to partake in the “national struggle,” said Jihad Harb, a Palestinian researcher and commentator.“Social media has opened a new horizon for the new generation. They interact and build their thoughts in a new way that gives girls the same chances of boys,” he said. The IDF says that of 152 attacks recorded, 22 were by women. It attributed the rise to a new, bolder generation of Palestinian women that did not belong to the established military organizations and did not ask for anyone’s permission to act.One of the most notable incidents involved a pair of cousins, aged 16 and 14, who stabbed an elderly Palestinian, mistaking him for an Israeli, with a pair of scissors near a popular Jerusalem marketplace. Security camera footage captured a police officer shooting one of them dead and wounding the other.Ibrahim Awwad, the father of 16-year-old Norhan, who was wounded, said he was shocked by their botched attack and could only speculate that they were driven by the daily life in the Qalandia refugee camp north of Jerusalem, where they often woke to the sounds of shootings.“If I knew they were going to carry out an attack, I would have tied them up in the house,” he said. “But everything was normal. There were no signs.”Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that because females didn’t fit the typical profile of an attacker, they aroused little suspicion and had an easier time getting around Israeli checkpoints. That has now changed.Hanan Ashrawi, the most senior female Palestinian official, said the surge in attacks reflects an overall more active political approach of the younger generation. She said that Israeli measures had provoked all Palestinians and that women feel “they are just as affected by this reality.”Deeper religious devotion was also a factor, she added.Taha Qatanani said his 16-year-old daughter Ashraqat’s greatest wish was to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, and when he was unable to get her the necessary permits, she accused him of letting her down. Tensions at the site, the third-holiest in Islam, and rumors that Israel was trying to expand its presence there enraged her, Qatanani said.On November 22, she pulled out a knife at the entrance to a West Bank military base when a settler driving by veered off the road and struck her with his car. A soldier then shot her dead.“As long as there is occupation there will be resistance,” said Qatanani, who served several stints in Israeli prisons for his activity in the Islamic Jihad movement. In the family living room on the outskirts of Nablus, there was a makeshift shrine to Ashraqat featuring her image against a backdrop of Al-Aqsa and a wooden carving in her honor with a bloodied knife piercing through a map of historic Palestine.“I would have much more relief if my son had done it,” Qatanani said over tea, pointing to 18-year-old Yassin. “My masculine mentality says the man should do it. But I consider the girl doing it a much stronger message … when it gets to the degree that a girl carries out an attack it means there is nothing else.”

Palestinians call for Greek action on Israel plane 'apartheid'-AFP-JAN 6,16-YAHOONEWS

Jerusalem (AFP) - The Palestinian leadership on Wednesday demanded the Greek government act after two Arab passengers were expelled from an Israel-bound flight, saying the decision to remove the pair was "reminiscent" of apartheid. Two Arab passengers with Israeli documents were forced off an Aegean Airlines flight before it set off from Athens on Sunday after Israeli Jews protested about their presence. After an initial complaint by passengers, the pair's documents were checked again by Greek security but no issues were found. However by this stage the protest had escalated, with dozens of passengers refusing to take off until the men were removed from the plane."It started with three or four people and by the end there were 60-70 people standing up, demanding that the pair disembark," an Aegean spokesperson said.Eventually the pair left after negotiations with the airline, staying in a hotel at Aegean's expense and flying the next day.Aegean on Wednesday expressed its "greatest regrets for the event" and rejected "any possibility of discrimination" in an apology letter."Our crew reacted to a very difficult situation only having the safety and comfort of all passengers in mind," it said. The incident delayed the flight to Tel Aviv by over 90 minutes.Israeli media identified the two as an Israeli Arab and a Palestinian, saying the protesting passengers were Jewish. The company said only that one of the men held an Israeli passport while the other had a valid Israeli residence permit, without discussing their ethnicity.Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, referring to both men as Palestinians, called the decision to eject them "unjust and disgraceful."" We are outraged by how two Palestinians were treated with discrimination and prejudice at the hands of the Aegean cabin crew prior to the departure of last Sunday's flight," he said in a statement."We call upon the Greek government to take strong action against this racist act, including compensation for the two Palestinian passengers."This appalling behaviour by the Israeli passengers is reminiscent of the worst years of the South African apartheid," he said.Aegean on Tuesday thanked the two Arab men for their cooperation." We thank again the two Israeli passengers that agreed to disembark for their understanding and collaboration and we apologise for the whole episode which was indeed extremely unfortunate," Aegean said.A Palestinian government official told AFP they would be raising the issue with Greek diplomats.

Charlie Hebdo editor: No one questions when Jews are killed-In special edition for anniversary of deadly attack, Gėrard Biard writes that killers in November’s Paris attack ‘showed us that he had decided we were all Jewish’-By AP and Times of Israel staff January 5, 2016, 6:04 am

The editor of Charlie Hebdo said in an article set to come out Wednesday on the anniversary of the deadly terror attack on the French satirical magazine that while the killings launched a global debate on the role of religion and free speech, no one bothered to explain to the world why Islamist attackers also went after a kosher supermarket.Jihadist gunmen murdered 17 people at Charlie Hebdo on January 7, 2015 and at a Paris kosher supermarket two days later. They were among the first victims of a string of attacks by Islamic fundamentalists in France last year that ultimately left at least 147 people dead and hundreds of others injured.“We are so used to Jews being killed because they are Jewish,” Gėrard Biard wrote. “This is an error, and not just on a human level. Because it’s the executioner who decides who is Jewish. Nov. 13 was the proof of that. On that day, the executioner showed us that he had decided we were all Jewish.”The article was set to appear in a special edition due for release on the one-year anniversary of the attack. The magazine is laced with blasphemy, obscenity and profanity, and Charlie Hebdo’s surviving artists and writers declared that the satirical paper is alive, but “the murderer is still at large.”The 32-page copy marking the anniversary of the Jan. 7 attack on the paper’s staff accuses Islamic fundamentalists, organized religion, an irresolute government and intelligence failures for the 2015 violence in France by Muslim extremists that started with that day.Almost all of those believed directly responsible for the Jan. 7-9 attacks and the Nov. 13 carnage in Paris that killed 130 people are dead as well. But Charlie Hebdo’s special edition this week, with a front-page caricature of a bloody God wielding an assault rifle, darkly predicts that more violence is to come.Laurent Sourisseau, the newspaper’s director who goes by the name Riss, drew the cover and wrote an editorial describing the horror he survived — and that took the lives of friends and colleagues. He described the newsroom’s silence moments after the two gunmen opened fire, saying that was how he knew his colleagues were dead.Riss wrote that Islamic fanatics and other religious zealots wanted Charlie Hebdo’s secular journalists to pay the ultimate price “for daring to laugh at religion.” He insisted that the newspaper would remain alive because “never have we wanted so much to break the faces of those who dreamed of our deaths.”The editorial “is violent and very insulting toward religion,” Abdallah Zekri, president of the Observatory against Islamophobia, told BFM television on Monday. The edition, on newsstands Wednesday, details the moments of horror in Paris’ 11th arrondissement in the first staff meeting of 2015. The day had started in usual French fashion for the New Year, with kisses on the cheek and well wishes. One staffer went downstairs to fetch her daughter from daycare, and the brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi called out her pen name upon seeing her: “Coco.”They had already killed the building’s handyman, Frederic Boisseau. With their guns at her back, the staffer opened the door and then the attackers opened fire. It took just minutes to kill 11 people in the building; they would fire point-blank on a Muslim police officer on the way out, his death horrifically immortalized in cell phone video.Patrick Pelloux, an emergency room doctor and columnist for the newspaper, was among the first to arrive after a call from one of the survivors in the room. “The more I went upstairs, the more blood there was,” Pelloux wrote. In a series of editorials later in the edition, Charlie Hebdo takes aim at university students who wear veils or openly pray in classrooms, hospital patients who refuse medical treatment from someone of the opposite sex, and France’s intelligence community. Mixed in were blasphemous caricatures targeting a range of beliefs, obscene sketches, and a variety of French profanity that takes standard grade cursing as a mere starting point. In all, typical Charlie Hebdo, alive and well.

Suspected Tel Aviv gunman thought hiding in West Bank-Mother of Nashat Milhem says security forces threatening to demolish their home; police officially accuse him of killing Lod cabbie-By Times of Israel staff January 6, 2016, 9:45 pm

A manhunt for a suspected Arab Israeli gunman who killed three people in Tel Aviv last week continued Wednesday, with reports indicating that he may be hiding out in the Palestinian territories.According to Channel 2 television, Israeli security officials increasingly believe Nashat Milhem may be in the West Bank, although details of the search for him remain under a gag order.Milhem allegedly killed two people in a shooting attack at a Tel Aviv bar on Friday, New Year’s Day, before fleeing and disappearing. Police on Wednesday evening officially named Milhem as the alleged killer of Bedouin taxi driver Amin Shaaban some 60 minutes after the bar attack.Milhem’s mother said Wednesday that security forces were threatening to demolish their home.“They threatened as if they intended to demolish our house if we don’t disclose the place where he is hiding,” she said. “I told them we do not know where he has gone.”Police descended in large numbers Wednesday morning on an unnamed Arab town in a northern area of Israel known as the Triangle, as the manhunt for Milhem entered its sixth day.Since the attacks, Milhem, from the northern town of Arara, has remained at large. Authorities have warned he is armed, dangerous and capable of striking again.According to Israel Radio, officers on Wednesday morning searched the homes of relatives of Milhem in one of the towns in the Triangle, but the hunt came up empty. A conflicting Channel 10 report Tuesday evening said that police believed Milhem had fled to northern Israel.Earlier reports said that police do not know where he is, although law enforcement were looking into the possibility that he fled to the West Bank. Israel Police chief Roni Alsheich indicated at a press conference Tuesday that Milhem was no longer believed to be in Tel Aviv, although he refused to elaborate. The attorney representing Mohammed Milhem, the father of the suspected gunman who is himself a suspect in the case, said Tuesday that his client believed his son was in the West Bank.According to the Channel 10 report, it would be more difficult for Israeli authorities to track down Milhem in the north than in the West Bank, where the Shin Bet security service has many informants. Police assessments quoted by the TV station said Milhem had likely received assistance both before and after Friday’s attacks. The first attack Friday took place outside the Simta bar on Tel Aviv’s busy Dizengoff Street. Shift manager Alon Bakal, 26, and patron Shimon Ruimi, 30, were killed in a hail of bullets as the suspected gunman opened fire with a submachine gun he allegedly stole from his father. Seven people were wounded. Fleeing the scene, police said, Milhem shot dead Shaaban after hailing and escaping in his taxi. The father’s lawyer, Nechami Feinblatt, said his client had been in touch with his son after he carried out the attacks. The elder Milhem was remanded for two days earlier in the day as a suspected accessory to the killing, and for allegedly obstructing the investigation. Five other suspects, including several other relatives, were also remanded by the Haifa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. A brother of the suspect, Jaudat Milhem, was freed after from detention Wednesday.Speaking to Channel 10 on Tuesday evening, Feinblatt — who noted he has been representing Mohammed Milhem for years — said police and the Shin Bet were aware of the phone call.“I know the father did call a certain number, and told police about it,” his attorney said. “Without elaborating, there was some contact, which the police and Shin Bet are aware of.”Feinblatt told the TV station that his client had “certainly not” helped the suspected shooter escape. He said Mohammed Milhem’s communication with his son was known to police on Friday, though he was freed before being rearrested Tuesday.“The truth is, the Shin Bet is desperate,” Feinblatt said, and “when there is such a crisis in the agency,” they arrest people to gather information.Feinblatt said family members of the suspected killer maintain they are innocent. He said the family was clinging to the hope that Nashat Milhem was hired to kill the bar patrons by Israeli criminals, and that the shooting wasn’t a terror attack.

North Korea H-bomb test 'gross violation' of international law if confirmed: Russia-Reuters-JAN 6,16-YAHOONEWS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A reported successful test of a hydrogen bomb by North Korea would amount to a gross violation of international law if confirmed, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday."Such actions are fraught with further aggravation of the situation on the Korean peninsula, which is anyway marked by very high potential of military and political confrontation," said the ministry's spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova.North Korea said it had successfully tested a miniaturized hydrogen nuclear device on Wednesday, claiming a significant advance in its strike capability and setting off alarm bells among its neighbors.(Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov; Editing by Jason Bush)

North Korean Test Not Likely a Hydrogen Bomb, US Officials Say-By LUIS MARTINEZ-JAN 6,16-YAHOONEWS-Good Morning America

Initial test results suggest that an explosion in North Korean was not a hydrogen bomb, as the state government there has claimed, U.S. officials told ABC News. The initial determination of the tests, which were conducted by the United States and included seismic activity, is that it had a nuclear weapon yield in the single-digit kilotons, a U.S. official said. That would be in the range of previous North Korean nuclear tests, including the latest one in 2013, and not a hydrogen bomb, which would have resulted in much higher energy output. The state-run news agency announced the "successful" tests today.White House spokesman Josh Earnest echoed these sentiments in a news conference this afternoon, saying that initial data is “not consistent with North Korean claims of a successful hydrogen bomb test.”Another official said a conclusive determination will be made after airborne samples are gathered but, for now, based on the size of the yield and scope of the blast, the initial reading is North Korea did not test a hydrogen bomb.North Korea's Kim Jong Un Shown Allegedly Signing Bomb Test Authorization-The officials indicated that the timing of the North Korean blast was a surprise, noting there had been activity at the North Korean nuclear test site detected in December. One official said no firm determination had been made that a test was imminent and pointed to North Korea’s capability of conducting these kinds of tests on short notice.A U.S. Air Force WC-135 "Constant Phoenix" sniffer plane will soon be operational near North Korea, looking for radioactive isotopes that will help determine what kind of blast occurred. The aircraft is used to monitor nuclear test ban agreements but is also used by the United States after North Korean nuclear tests to look for isotopes that may have escaped into the atmosphere. The plane has equipment that gathers samples, which are then tested for radioactive materials. Both officials said there does not seem to be activity at North Korea’s missile launch sites to indicate missile tests occurring anytime soon.

UN plans ‘further measures’ against North Korea over H-bomb test-Ban Ki-moon calls nuclear explosion ‘deeply troubling’ and ‘profoundly destabilizing’ for region-By AFP January 6, 2016, 11:19 pm-the times of israel

The UN Security Council agreed Wednesday to prepare further unspecified measures against North Korea after it have carried out a fourth nuclear test. The 15-member council including China, Pyongyang’s ally, “strongly condemned” the test and described it as a “clear threat to international peace and security.”North Korea said earlier Wednesday it had carried out a “successful” miniaturized hydrogen bomb test — a shock announcement that, if confirmed, would massively raise the stakes in the hermit state’s bid to strengthen its nuclear arsenal.Uruguay’s Ambassador Elbio Rosselli, this month’s council president, recalled that the council had threatened to take “further significant measures” if Pyongyang violated UN resolutions by testing an atomic device.“In line with this commitment and the gravity of this violation, the members of the Security Council will begin to work immediately on such measures in a new Security Council resolution,” said Rosselli. The envoy did not specify whether the new measure would extend sanctions against North Korea, but other diplomats confirmed that adding new names to the sanctions list was being considered.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the underground nuclear test “deeply troubling” and “profoundly destabilizing for regional security.”He stressed that it was in violation of numerous Security Council resolutions barring Pyongyang from engaging in nuclear activities.Three previous tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013 triggered waves of UN sanctions.Currently there are a total of 20 entities and 12 individuals on the UN sanctions blacklist.British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said his delegation was “working with others on a resolution on further sanctions.”

Suspicious white powder found in Rishon Lezion-Authorities remove substance for testing after it was sent to home in envelope from the US-By Judah Ari Gross January 7, 2016, 12:48 am-the times of israel

An envelope containing an unidentified white powder was removed from a home in Rishon Lezion on Wednesday evening, and sent to a laboratory for testing. No injuries were reported.Israel Police spokeswoman confirmed to The Times of Israel that the substance had been taken away for examination to a nearby facility in Nes Ziona, and that the authorities were still not certain what it was.The powder arrived at the home in an envelope from the United States, and the occupant of the apartment discovered it when she opened the letter, Channel 2 television reported. The letter was initially tested by a special unit from the fire service, who concluded that the powder was unlikely to be toxic, Channel 2 said.

California governor declares LA-area gas leak an emergency-Reuters By Alex Dobuzinskis-JAN 6,16-YAHOONEWS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday declared a Los Angeles-area natural gas leak that has been sickening area residents for more than two months an emergency, calling for alternatives to stop the underground leak if existing efforts fail.Southern California Gas Co, which operates the well that is the site of the underground methane leak, is trying to stop it by drilling a relief well to reach a damaged pipeline, then injecting fluids and heavy mud into it.The governor's office said in a statement the utility will need to identify how it will stop the leak if a relief well fails to seal it - or if the existing leak worsens. The leak was discovered on Oct. 23 at a well used for natural gas storage in Aliso Canyon just outside Los Angeles' Porter Ranch neighborhood in the San Fernando valley, which is home to more than 30,000 people. Thousands of residents were forced to move over the holidays, with the company under writing their temporary housing.Officials from Southern California Gas, a division of Sempra Energy, have said they expect to stop the leak in late February to late March. The leak, which state officials have said accounted at its peak for a fourth of California's 20 million metric tons a year in greenhouse gas emissions from methane, is believed to have been caused by a broken injection-well pipe several hundred feet beneath the surface of the 3,600-acre (1,457-hectare) field.People in the area have complained of such ailments as headaches, nausea and respiratory irritation from mercaptans, the odorants added to natural gas, according to Los Angeles County health officials. They have said past studies found no long-term health effects from mercaptans. The governor's office said it had taken steps to coordinate the local, state and federal response to the leak, which at last count was releasing more than 30,300 kilograms of methane per hour, and stop it as soon as possible. The emergency declaration by Brown, a Democrat, follows calls by local officials in Los Angeles for increased state regulation of gas storage facilities. The emergency declaration makes clear Southern California Gas is responsible for covering costs from the leak and allows the governor's administration, if necessary, to quickly waive laws in the future to deal with the crisis, the governor's spokesman Evan Westrup, said.Residents of Porter Ranch have said they want the gas field shut down. For his part, the governor called for regulators to assess the long-term viability of natural gas storage facilities in California."As we have since this incident began, SoCalGas stands willing and ready to cooperate with the governor’s office, all state and local officials and regulatory agencies," Dennis Arriola, president and chief executive of the company, said in a statement. The leaking storage field in Aliso Canyon is the second largest such facility in the western United States by capacity.(Additional reporting by Curtis Skinner in San Francisco; Editing by Jonathan Oatis and Leslie Adler)

North Korea carries out 'successful' hydrogen bomb test; 'Man-made earthquake' suspected after tremor-JAN 6,16-ABCWIRES

North Korea says it has conducted a "successful" hydrogen bomb test, indicated by a large tremor near its nuclear test facilities.Key points:North Korea claims to have successfully carried out its first hydrogen bomb test-Magnitude-5.1 tremor at surface depth registered near Punggye-ri nuclear testing facility at 12:30pm AEDT-The North has previously conducted tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013 at location of latest tremor..-If confirmed, the explosion marks a major step forward in the country's nuclear development."The republic's first hydrogen bomb test has been successfully performed ... based on the strategic determination of the Workers' Party," a state television news reader announced."With the perfect success of our historic H-bomb, we have joined the rank of advanced nuclear states."The latest test, completely based on our technology and our manpower, confirmed that our newly-developed technological resources are accurate and scientifically demonstrated the impact of our miniaturised H-bomb."A magnitude-5.1 tremor was earlier detected by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and South Korean officials said they suspected it was an explosion."We suspect a man-made earthquake, and are analysing the scale and epicentre of the quake with the geoscience and mineral resource institute of South Korea," a Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) official earlier said.A revised location of the tremor by the USGS puts it at the same location as previous tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013, and at surface depth. While vowing to stick by a no-first-use policy, North Korea said it would continue to pursue an advanced nuclear strike capability."As long as the vicious anti-North policy of the US persists, we will never stop development of our nuclear program," a statement said. The surprise test was personally ordered by North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and came just two days before his birthday.Last month, Mr Kim suggested Pyongyang had already developed a hydrogen bomb, although the claim was greeted with scepticism by international experts.A hydrogen, or thermonuclear, device uses fusion in a chain reaction that results in a powerful explosion.North Korea has hinted before at the possession of "stronger, more powerful" weapons, but Mr Kim's remarks were believed to be the first direct reference to an H-bomb.In Seoul, the presidential Blue House called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council as officials scrambled to confirm the precise nature of the tremor. The website of the China Earthquake Network Centre described the seismic activity as a "suspected explosion", while the Japanese government said there was a strong possibility that "this might be a nuclear test".A nuclear test is as a major slap in the face to the North's chief ally China and extinguish any chance of a resumption of six-country talks on North Korea's nuclear program that Beijing has been pushing for.

hydrogen bomb-The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. | 2015-The Columbia University Press.

hydrogen bomb or H-bomb, weapon deriving a large portion of its energy from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen isotopes. In an atomic bomb, uranium or plutonium is split into lighter elements that together weigh less than the original atoms, the remainder of the mass appearing as energy. Unlike this fission bomb, the hydrogen bomb functions by the fusion, or joining together, of lighter elements into heavier elements. The end product again weighs less than its components, the difference once more appearing as energy. Because extremely high temperatures are required in order to initiate fusion reactions, the hydrogen bomb is also known as a thermonuclear bomb. The first thermonuclear bomb was exploded in 1952 at Enewetak by the United States, the second in 1953 by Russia (then the USSR). Great Britain, France, and China have also exploded thermonuclear bombs, and these five nations comprise the so-called nuclear club—nations that have the capability to produce nuclear weapons and admit to maintaining an inventory of them. The three smaller Soviet successor states that inherited nuclear arsenals (Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus) relinquished all nuclear warheads, which have been removed to Russia. Several other nations either have tested thermonuclear devices or claim to have the capability to produce them, but officially state that they do not maintain a stockpile of such weapons; among these are India, Israel, and Pakistan. South Africa's apartheid regime built six nuclear bombs but dismantled them later. The presumable structure of a thermonuclear bomb is as follows: at its center is an atomic bomb; surrounding it is a layer of lithium deuteride (a compound of lithium and deuterium, the isotope of hydrogen with mass number 2); around it is a tamper, a thick outer layer, frequently of fissionable material, that holds the contents together in order to obtain a larger explosion. Neutrons from the atomic explosion cause the lithium to fission into helium, tritium (the isotope of hydrogen with mass number 3), and energy. The atomic explosion also supplies the temperatures needed for the subsequent fusion of deuterium with tritium, and of tritium with tritium (50,000,000°C and 400,000,000°C, respectively). Enough neutrons are produced in the fusion reactions to produce further fission in the core and to initiate fission in the tamper.Since the fusion reaction produces mostly neutrons and very little that is radioactive, the concept of a "clean" bomb has resulted: one having a small atomic trigger, a less fissionable tamper, and therefore less radioactive fallout. Carrying this progression further results in the neutron bomb, which has a minimum trigger and a nonfissionable tamper; it produces blast effects and a hail of lethal neutrons but almost no radioactive fallout and little long-term contamination. This theoretically would cause minimal physical damage to buildings and equipment but kill most living things. Developed in 1958 by the United States and successfully tested, a number of countries are believed to have included such weapons in their nuclear arsenals; the United States built several hundred neutron bombs in the 1980s but did not deploy them. The theorized cobalt bomb is, on the contrary, a radioactively "dirty" bomb having a cobalt tamper. Instead of generating additional explosive force from fission of the uranium, the cobalt is transmuted into cobalt-60, which has a half-life of 5.26 years and produces energetic (and thus penetrating) gamma rays. The half-life of Co-60 is just long enough so that airborne particles will settle and coat the earth's surface before significant decay has occurred, thus making it impractical to hide in shelters. This prompted physicist Leo Szilard to call it a "doomsday device" since it was capable of wiping out life on earth.Like other types of nuclear explosion, the explosion of a hydrogen bomb creates an extremely hot zone near its center. In this zone, because of the high temperature, nearly all of the matter present is vaporized to form a gas at extremely high pressure. A sudden overpressure, i.e., a pressure far in excess of atmospheric pressure, propagates away from the center of the explosion as a shock wave, decreasing in strength as it travels. It is this wave, containing most of the energy released, that is responsible for the major part of the destructive mechanical effects of a nuclear explosion. The details of shock wave propagation and its effects vary depending on whether the burst is in the air, underwater, or underground.

A look at where countries stand in Saudi Arabia-Iran dispute-Associated Press By JON GAMBRELL-JAN 5,16-YAHOONEWS

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which began with the kingdom's execution of a Shiite cleric and escalated with attacks on Saudi diplomatic posts in the Islamic Republic, have countries around the world responding by choosing sides or urging calm. Some nations have followed the Saudis' lead in severing or downgrading ties with Iran, while others have offered words of caution aimed at calming the situation. Here's a look at where countries and other regional actors stand at this point:-THE MAIN ACTORS:SAUDI ARABIA — The kingdom severed ties to Iran after attacks on two of its diplomatic posts following its execution of a Shiite cleric last weekend. It also later cancelled all flights between the two nations.IRAN — Since the attack on the diplomatic posts, Iran says it has made arrests and has criticized the violent protesters. However on Tuesday, President Hassan Rouhani took a slightly harder line, saying Saudi Arabia's move to sever ties with his country couldn't "cover its crime" of executing Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.COUNTRIES BACKING SAUDI ARABIA:BAHRAIN — The tiny, Shiite-majority island kingdom off the Saudi coast, which long has relied on Riyadh for support of its Sunni rulers, was the first to cut ties with Iran and has also halted flights. Bahraini officials repeatedly have accused Iran of training militants and attempting to smuggle arms into the country, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.SUDAN — The African nation cut diplomatic ties to Iran and gave Iranian diplomats two weeks to leave the country. Sudan once tilted toward Iran, but has been looking to Saudi Arabia for aid since the secession of oil-rich South Sudan in 2011.UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The oil-rich country of seven emirates says it will reduce the number of diplomats in Iran, recall its ambassador and focus only on business relations. While backing Saudi Arabia, it may have chosen to reduce — rather than completely sever ties — because of a long trading history with Iran.KUWAIT — The oil-rich country is recalling of its ambassador from Tehran, but it isn't immediately clear how Kuwaiti-Iranian diplomatic ties will be affected. Tiny Kuwait is home to both Shiites and Sunnis living in peace and has the most free-wheeling political system among all Gulf nations.JORDAN: Overwhelmingly Sunni Jordan is a close ally of Saudi Arabia in the region and a beneficiary of Gulf aid. Jordan's government spokesman, Mohammed Momani, has condemned the attack on the Saudi Embassy in Iran.EGYPT: Visiting Riyadh on Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry denounced the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran and said Iran's behavior after al-Nimr's execution amounts to "intervening in the kingdom's internal affairs." Cairo has been closely allied with Riyadh since the Egyptian military overthrew an Islamist president in 2013. Riyadh has provided billions in aid to Egypt since then.THE ARAB LEAGUE: The body denounced the attacks on the diplomatic missions and reminded Iran of the importance of "not interfering in the internal affairs of an Arab nation," according to a statement carried by Egypt's official MENA news agency.-THE MEDIATOR:OMAN — The sultanate has long historical ties to Iran and served as the base for secret talks between Iranian and U.S. officials that jump-started the international deal reached on Iran's contested nuclear program.THOSE BACKING IRAN:LEBANESE HEZBOLLAH MOVEMENT — Hezbollah was founded in 1982 with the help of Iran's Revolutionary Guard after Israel invaded Lebanon. The group is one the main Iran-backed factions in the region.SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR ASSAD — Iran has been one of the biggest supporters of Syria since the 1980s and has stood by Assad's government in his country's grinding civil war. Saudi Arabia has been one of the biggest backers of those trying to overthrow him.IRAQ'S SHIITE-LED GOVERNMENT — Al-Nimr's execution sparked outrage among the country's majority Shiites who have taken to the streets in Baghdad and the south, calling for an end to ties with Saudi Arabia. The Shiite-led government has warmed Riyadh that such executions "would lead to nothing but more destruction."OTHER REGIONAL ACTORS:ISRAEL — Israel considers Iran to be its greatest regional threat because of its nuclear program, its arsenal of long-range missiles, its support of anti-Israel militant groups and its repeated threats to destroy it. While Israel has no direct ties to Saudi Arabia, the countries have a shared concern over Iran's growing influence.THE PALESTINIANS — The Palestinian Authority issued a statement after the execution of al-Nimr saying that it stands alongside the Saudis in their fight against "terrorism." The Saudis are the largest donor to the Palestinian Authority in the Arab world, providing them some $200 million annually. The PA, and the Fatah faction that leads it, has had a strained relationship with Iran because of its support of its rival, Hamas.YEMEN — The Arab world's poorest country is torn by a civil war pitting its internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, against Shiite rebels known as Houthis, who are supported by Iran.THOSE URGING CAUTION:THE UNITED NATIONS — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Saudi Arabia and Iran to support peace efforts in Syria and Yemen and avoid escalating tensions.EUROPEAN UNION: The 28-nation bloc, which opposes the death penalty, criticized Saudi Arabia's mass executions and said al-Nimr's case undermined freedom of expression and basic political rights in the kingdom. Since tensions flared between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the EU foreign policy chief has had phone contact with both sides, fearing an escalation would further destabilize the whole region.THE UNITED STATES — The White House has urged Saudi Arabia and Iran to not let their dispute derail efforts to end the Syrian civil war. President Barack Obama's administration also hopes to see the Iranian nuclear deal through.UNITED KINGDOM — Britain and Iran reopened their respective embassies in 2015, four years after hard-line protesters stormed the British embassy in Tehran. Saudi Arabia is a key diplomatic and economic ally of Britain, though Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood said Britain told the kingdom about its "disappointment at the mass executions."TURKEY — Turkey has urged both Saudi Arabia and Iran to ease tensions, saying the Middle East region is "already like a powder keg" and cannot withstand a new crisis.GERMANY — Berlin has called on Saudi Arabia and Iran to work to mend their diplomatic ties, while condemning both the mass executions in the kingdom and the storming of the Saudi missions in Iran.RUSSIA — State news agency RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed senior diplomat as saying Moscow is ready to act as a mediator between Iran and Saudi Arabia. It's unclear whether Russian officials have made a formal offer to work with the two nations.___Associated Press writers Aron Heller in Jerusalem, Bassem Mroue in Beirut, Karin Laub in Amman, Jordan, Frank Jordans in Berlin, Raf Casert in Brussels, Susannah George in Baghdad, Jill Lawless in London and Nour Youssef in Cairo contributed to this report.___Follow Jon Gambrell on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jongambrellap

Iran unveils second underground missile, likely to irk U.S.-Reuters By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin- JAN 5,16-YAHOONEWS

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran unveiled a new underground missile depot on Tuesday with state television showing Emad precision-guided missiles in store which the United States says can take a nuclear warhead and violate a 2010 U.N. Security Council resolution. The defiant move to publicize Iran's missile program seemed certain to irk the United States as it plans to dismantle nearly all sanctions on Iran under a breakthrough nuclear agreement.Tasnim news agency and state television video said the underground facility, situated in mountains and run by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, was inaugurated by the speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani. Release of one-minute video followed footage of another underground missile depot last October. The United States says the Emad, which Iran tested in October, would be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and U.S. officials say Washington will respond to the Emad tests with fresh sanctions against Iranian individuals and businesses linked to the program.Iran's boasting about its missile capabilities are a challenge for U.S. President Barack Obama's administration as the United States and European Union plan to dismantle nearly all international sanctions against Tehran under the nuclear deal reached in July.Iran has abided by the main terms of the nuclear deal, which require it to give up material that world powers feared could be used to make an atomic weapon and accept other restrictions on its nuclear program. But President Hassan Rouhani ordered his defense minister last week to expand the missile program. The Iranian missiles under development boast much improved accuracy over the current generation, which experts say is likely to improve their effectiveness with conventional warheads. The Revolutionary Guards' second-in-command, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, said last Friday that Iran's depots and underground facilities are so full that they do not know how to store their new missiles.(Reporting by Bozorgmehr Sharafedin; Editing by Richard Balmforth)

Iran president criticizes Saudi Arabia over severing ties-Associated Press By ALI AKBAR DAREINI and JON GAMBRELL-JAN 5,16-YAHOONEWS

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's president said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia cannot "cover up" its crime of executing a leading Shiite cleric by severing diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic, even as the kingdom's allies began limiting their links to his country.President Hassan Rouhani's comments came as Kuwait announced it had recalled its ambassador to Iran over attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in the Islamic Republic. The execution last weekend of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a Shiite cleric and opposition figure in Saudi Arabia, has heightened the Saudi-Iran regional rivalry, threatening to derail already shaky peace efforts over the wars in Syria and Yemen.A statement posted on his official website said Rouhani discussed the current diplomatic dispute with visiting Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen."The Saudi government has taken a strange action and cut off its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran to cover its crimes of beheading a religious leader in its country," Rouhani said. "Undoubtedly, such actions can't cover up that big crime."Iran's Vice President Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, addressing journalists Tuesday, said the country's intelligence services were investigating the diplomatic mission attacks and that police officers who failed to take action to stop the assaults would be prosecuted. Iranian police say at least 50 people already have been arrested over the attack. The diplomatic standoff between Iran and the kingdom began Saturday, when Saudi Arabia executed Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others convicted of terror charges — the largest mass execution carried out by the kingdom since 1980. It's not clear whether al-Nimr was beheaded with a sword, though Saudis routinely use that form of execution.Al-Nimr, a central figure in the Arab Spring-inspired protests by Saudi Arabia's Shiite minority, was executed after being convicted of sedition and of other crimes, though he long denied advocating violence. News of his execution has sparked Shiite protests from Bahrain to Pakistan. In Iran, protesters responded by attacking the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad. Late Sunday, Saudi Arabia announced it was severing relations with Iran because of the assaults, giving Iranian diplomatic personnel 48 hours to leave.Sudan and the tiny island kingdom of Bahrain said Monday they would sever ties with Iran The United Arab Emirates announced it would downgrade ties to Tehran to the level of the charge d'affaires, while other nations issued statements criticizing Iran.On Tuesday, Kuwait announced the recalling of its ambassador in a statement carried on the state-run Kuwait News Agency. However, Kuwait did not say it would sever its ties to Iran over the tensions.Tiny Kuwait is home to both Shiites and Sunnis living in peace and has the most free-wheeling political system among all Gulf nations.Meanwhile Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of Shiite protesters marched in Sitra, south of Bahrain's capital, Manama, over al-Nimr's execution. An Associated Press journalist saw police fire tear gas and bird shot, while some protesters threw gasoline bombs. A number of protesters suffered wounds from the birdshot.Bahrain, a tiny island off the coast of Saudi Arabia, is predominantly Shiite, but ruled by Sunnis. It's been the scene of long-running, low-intensity unrest since 2011 Arab Spring-inspired protests.Iran expressed "regret" over the attacks on the diplomatic missions in a letter to the United Nations on Monday and vowed to arrest those responsible. In the letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Iran's U.N. envoy Gholamali Khoshroo said more than 40 protesters have been arrested and that authorities are searching for other suspects. In response to a Saudi letter, the U.N. Security Council late Monday strongly condemned the attacks by Iranian protesters on Saudi diplomatic posts. The council statement, agreed to after hours of negotiations, made no mention of the Saudi executions or the rupture in Saudi-Iranian relations.Saudi Arabia and Iran have long vied for influence in the Middle East. Their rivalry deepened following the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and the chaos of the Arab Spring, which gave rise to proxy wars in Syria and Yemen.World powers have sought to calm the tensions. On Monday, Germany called on both sides to mend ties, while Russian state news agency RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed senior diplomat as saying Moscow is ready to act as a mediator. The U.N. envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, was en route to Riyadh on Monday with plans to later visit Tehran. Iran, a staunch supporter of embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Saudi Arabia, a key backer of the opposition, have participated in three rounds of international talks aimed at ending the conflict. De Mistura has set a Jan. 25 target date for a fourth round of talks. The White House urged Saudi Arabia and Iran to not let their dispute derail efforts to end the Syrian civil war.___Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As Cold War with Saudi sharpens, Iran's Guards deliver warning-Reuters By Babak Dehghanpisheh and Bozorgmehr Sharafedin-JAN 5,16-YAHOONEWS

BEIRUT/DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was quick to condemn the execution of Saudi cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, stating: "Without a doubt, the hated Saudi regime will pay a price for this shameful act."For an organization deeply involved in wars in Syria and Iraq this looks no idle threat, at least in the eyes of Sunni Gulf Arab states like Saudi Arabia who say Shi'ite rival Tehran is bent on undermining their security. The Guard's furious comment is not a call for direct conflict with Riyadh, something neither country wants. But it is a reminder to Gulf Arabs that the IRGC, with connections in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the region, has many ways to wage the long cold war between Tehran and its Arab foes.Tehran denies interfering in Arab lands. But the Quds Force, the arm of the Guards that operates abroad, has contributed fighters, weapons and military supplies to back Iran’s interests and policies across the region. That prospect is worrying for a region where conflicts or political crises from Lebanon and Syria to Yemen, Iraq and Bahrain involve proxies of both powers who are at daggers drawn.A day after the IRGC issued its statement, which described Saudi rulers as "terrorist fostering, hated and anti-Islam", Riyadh broke off diplomatic relations with Tehran, escalating a contest for power that underpins the region's turmoil. There is no firm indication that Iran's factionalized leadership has agreed how far it should go to avenge the death of Nimr -- who was one of 47 people executed by Saudi Arabia on Saturday -- and what methods should be used. But whatever steps are authorized, the Guards are likely to be involved, although as orchestrators more than direct participants, experts say."The Guard will not respond directly," said Hilal Khashan, a professor of political science at the American University of Beirut.-RIVALRY-"They have their operatives, their people, their connections everywhere in the region who will answer what the Saudis did and actually escalate. Iran is in a very strong position to respond in the Saudi Arabian eastern province. And they can do a lot in Bahrain."Moderate voices on both sides do not have an interest in seeing the situation escalate into a full conflict, experts say.And yet the rivals often compete indirectly through allies, which lends the contest an element of unpredictability: Some Iranian proxies may be encouraged by the tough rhetoric coming from Tehran to carry out attacks not sanctioned by the Guard."Both sides are loath to see tensions spiral out of control. They are more likely than not to prevent this cold conflict from deteriorating into a hot one, while stepping up their proxy wars across the region," said Ali Vaez, the senior Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group."But with tensions reaching new heights, now more than ever, they run the risk of unintended direct confrontation."The Quds Force has gained valuable military experience in recent years and now plays a dominant role within the IRGC, experts say. In some cases, Guard fighters and their Shi’ite proxies have fought against Sunni groups directly supported by Saudi Arabia in Syria and Iraq. The IRGC has also established intelligence networks among the Shi'ite populations in the Gulf states. It has the potential to undermine Saudi Arabia and its allies' interests using sympathetic Shi'ites to stir political unrest or engage in violent attacks, experts say.Saudi Arabia has a sizable Shi’ite community in the east of the country, while the majority of Bahrain’s citizens are Shi’ites who live under a Sunni monarchy. A failed uprising which began in Bahrain in 2011 was largely focused on gaining more democratic rights for the country’s Shi’ites. In the Guards' statement, they warned that the youth and Muslims of Saudi Arabia would take "tough revenge" which would lead to the fall of the Saudi government. The Iranians could also revive the resentment that drove the Bahrain uprising.-RED LINE-"I think the Iranians think they can actually have a victory in Bahrain which would be a red line for the Saudis,” said a Western diplomat in Beirut who asked not to be identified." A key part of the Iranian narrative is that Bahrain is a majority Shi’ite nation that is being oppressed and not allowed democracy."The bulk of Iran's tough rhetoric has come from hardline groups like the Guards, some of whom have also criticized the nuclear deal agreed with world powers last year aimed at lifting most sanctions against the country.More diplomatic isolation is not good news for pragmatic Iranian President Hassan Rouhani who, with the blessing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pushed for the deal in order to expand Iran's ties with the international community.Rouhani managed to normalize ties with the West somewhat through the deal and started the new year with an optimistic tweet hoping that in 2016 countries can "look for reasons to make peace, not excuses for hostility".But now facing the biggest diplomatic crisis of his government, Rouhani might not be able to persuade the Guards to dial down their paramilitary activism in favor of diplomacy. That could lead the Guards to push their allies within Saudi Arabia to carry out violent attacks."Should the IRGC desire to use terrorism on Saudi soil to retaliate against the House of Saud, the IRGC is likely to find it easier to find recruits among the Shia in Saudi Arabia," said Ali Alfoneh, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an expert on the Revolutionary Guards. It is unlikely the Guards would do much to hit Saudi interests in Syria or Iraq. But harsh anti-Saudi rhetoric from Iran may spur some of the militias trained and armed by Tehran to act on their own, experts say.-ANGRY MILITIAMEN-"Iran has created a Frankenstein with the Shi’ite militias in Iraq," said the Western diplomat in Beirut."When you keep emphasizing this notion of Saudi Arabia and its proxies oppressing Shia -- and you’ve got these angry militiamen -- at some point they’re going to be out of Iran’s control. There’s always the risk of that kind of escalation."For their part, the Saudis could boost their financial and military support to Sunni militant groups in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to counter the Iranian threat, experts say.Still, it would be difficult for the Saudis to prevail in a political and diplomatic showdown with Iran, experts say."The fact that the Saudis have decided to sever their diplomatic relations with Iran means that they are, in their own minds, ready for an all-out confrontation with Iran," Khashan said. "There is nothing the Saudis can do to destabilize Iran whereas the Iranians on the other hand have every means conceivable to destabilize Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, namely Bahrain."(Reporting by Babak Dehghanpisheh in Beirut and Bozorgmehr Sharafedin in Dubai; Editing by William Maclean and Giles Elgood)

Japan to send plutonium cache to US under nuclear deal: report-AFP-JAN 5,16-YAHOONEWS

Tokyo (AFP) - Japan will send a huge cache of plutonium -- enough to produce 50 nuclear bombs -- to the United States as part of a deal to return the material that was used for research, reports and officials said Tuesday. The plutonium stockpile, provided by the US, Britain and France decades ago, has caused some disquiet given that Japan has said it has the ability to produce a nuclear weapon even if it chooses not to.Some 331 kilograms (730 pounds) of the highly fissionable material will be sent by ship to a nuclear facility in South Carolina by the end of March, Kyodo News reported Monday in a dispatch from Washington that cited unnamed Japanese government sources. The shipment, which comes ahead of a nuclear security summit in Washington in March, is meant to underscore both countries' commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and is part of a deal they made in 2014.It will be one of Japan's most significant overseas movements of plutonium since it transported one tonne from France in 1993 to be used in nuclear reactor experiments. That shipment triggered an outcry at the time from countries citing environmental and security concerns.A Japanese official confirmed the amount of plutonium to be sent to the US and said that preparations for the shipment are under way."But we can't comment on further details, including the departure date and route, for security reasons," the official in the nuclear technology section at the education ministry told AFP Tuesday. The material has been stored at the Nuclear Science Research Institute northeast of Tokyo, he added.Japan relies heavily on nuclear technology for its energy needs. In 2006, then foreign minister Taro Aso sparked panic in neighbouring countries by saying Japan, a scientific superpower with numerous Nobel prizes to its credit, had the know-how to produce nuclear arms but opts not to.Japan is the only country to ever have been attacked with nuclear weapons, and under a 1967 policy it refuses to produce, possess or allow nuclear weapons on its soil. But in 2010 Tokyo admitted to previous secret agreements with the United States to allow American warships to carry nuclear weapons across Japanese territory and to take the arms to US bases on Okinawa island in an emergency.US atomic bombs obliterated the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II, killing more than 210,000 people.

I WONDER IF THE MH370 PLANE CRASH HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FREESCALE CLOSURE IN ISRAEL.THERE WERE 20 FREESCALE WORKERS ON THE MH370 STILL NOT FOUND PLANE CRASH.1 YEAR AND 9 MONTHS LATER.

Israeli engineers will bounce back from Freescale lab closure, says expert-The loss of some 200 engineering jobs at one of the ‘granddaddies’ of Israeli tech does not reflect on the industry, says Shlomo Gradman-By David Shamah January 3, 2016, 7:59 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

One of the granddaddies of Israeli tech is no more — but the 200 or so workers who are to lose their job with the closure of NXP Israel’s Herzliya R&D center should land on their feet, believes Shlomo Gradman, CEO of ASG Ltd., and chairman of the Israeli High Tech CEO Forum.“The chip business is still very important in Israel, and I know that several multinationals are looking to hire engineers. It may take some time, but I believe the engineers losing their jobs will find another one, sooner rather than later.”NXP is actually a new name on the Israeli tech scene; it’s the company that bought out Freescale, which, since 1982 — when it was established as a spinoff of Motorola Semiconductor — has had a presence in Israel.Until just a few years ago, the company had almost 500 engineers working on communication and networking technology; layoffs slowly ate into that level of staffing. And today, upon the completion of the acquisition of Freescale and its 15,000-plus employees, just 200 remained at Freescale Israel’s R&D center. Now, even that lessened presence is to be eliminated, company sources told Israeli tech reporters Sunday. NXP, one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies, never had an R&D lab in Israel. “They have locations all over the world, and are likely to replace the Israeli engineers with engineers from China and India.” Indeed, all seven of NXP’s test and assembly sites, as well as two of their five wafer fabrication plants, are located in the Far East. The closure of the NXP/Freescale operation in Israel truly marks the end of an era. Herzliya was once one of Freescale’s most important development centers, and chips and micro controllers designed by the company (and in Israel) can be found in literally millions of products from the world’s biggest communication companies, in use in equipment used by cell phone service providers, ISPs, cloud computing centers, and many other communication providers. But if NXP has decided that its needs do not match the innovation the Herzliya team has proven capable of, there are plenty of other firms that could use some good engineers. Gradman is one of the most “connected” people in the Israeli semiconductor industry. A veteran of the international conference circuit, he personally organizes numerous major events in Israel each year, including the Chipex event, where the semiconductor industry shows off its latest and greatest; and the upcoming (in February) Innovex, an international showcase that presents the latest in Israeli technology, and is attended by top tech executives from some of the biggest companies in the US, Europe, and the Far East.As such, he is as much in the know about what is happening in the tech business as anyone, and “I know that some of the multinationals have open positions and are very interested in hiring good engineers here.” Many of them, in fact, have R&D centers right down the block from NXP/Freescale, so “it’s possible that many of these engineers will end up in the same neighborhood that they are used to working in.”The closure of the R&D center does not reflect in any way on the greater Israeli high-tech industry, or the semiconductor business specifically; both are very healthy, and the latter particularly so.“I know the perception has been that semiconductors were long ago eclipsed by other areas, like mobile and networking technology, and that there was no way we could compete with China and India because of the economies of scale advantage they have over us, but semiconductors have always been there, below the surface,” said Gradman. Just ask Apple; “they acquired Anobit and PrimeSense, two companies whose main activity was chip design, and hired hundreds of chip designers who were let go from other companies, like Texas Instruments.”The Internet of Things, added Gradman, is a major semiconductor play, as companies race to make smaller and better connected chips to control the almost-endless list of devices that are going to be connected, uploading data to the cloud for analysis. The IoT is a major game-changer that could become “a major growth engine,” Gradman said. And the engineers now on the market are just the people to help the Intels, Microsofts, Apples and Samsungs of the world build better IoT devices. “These engineers bring extensive experience and skills with them,” said Gradman. “Two hundreds engineers is a lot for the market to absorb at one time, but I am sure things will work out for them.”

Technology | Sun Mar 9, 2014 7:12pm EDT-Loss of employees on Malaysia flight a blow, U.S. chipmaker says-SAN FRANCISCO | By Noel Randewich-AP

Employees of Freescale Semiconductor who were on a Malaysia Airlines flight presumed to have crashed were doing sophisticated work at the U.S. chipmaker, a company spokesman said on Sunday. The 20 Freescale employees, among 239 people on flight MH370, were mostly engineers and other experts working to make the company's chip facilities in Tianjin, China, and Kuala Lumpur more efficient, said Mitch Haws, vice president, global communications and investor relations."These were people with a lot of experience and technical background and they were very important people," Haws said. "It's definitely a loss for the company."None of Austin, Texas-based Freescale's most senior executives were on board the Boeing Co 777-200ER airliner that vanished from radar screens about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on Saturday. The employees who were on board, 12 from Malaysia and eight from China, came from a range of disciplines and they were part of a broad push by Chief Executive Officer Gregg Lowe to make Freescale more efficient and cost effective, Haws said.Top-quality engineers are hard to come by for chipmakers and other technology companies, and losing them can have a major impact on business, regardless of their seniority. While the employees on the flight account for less than 1 percent of Freescale's global workforce of 16,800 people, they were working toward the same goals and their loss will reverberate throughout Freescale, Haws said. They had been streamlining facilities in Tianjin and Kuala Lumpur that Freescale uses for testing and packaging microchips used in automobiles, consumer products, telecommunications infrastructure and industrial equipment. On Sunday, Freescale was organizing transportation and accommodation for the 20 staff members' families, as well as providing grief counseling, Haws said. One of the chipmaker's long-time competitors, Texas Instruments, tweeted on Saturday: "We extend our condolences to the families and coworkers of the @Freescale employees aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH370."(Additional reporting by Greg Roumeliotis in New York; Editing by Mohammad Zargham)
