Israel finds a welcome audience with Christian journalists-Netanyahu's outreach to evangelical leaders reflects striking tactical parallels to Trump, his close ally and fellow media basher-By Josef Federman-TOI-OCT 18,17

AP — Israel’s right-wing government may be unpopular with Western liberals and much of its domestic press corps, but it has found a close friend among the world’s evangelical Christians and their media outlets. The government this week is hosting a first-of-its-kind summit for Christian journalists, featuring softball questions, mutual admiration and a welcome respite for embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His outreach to evangelical leaders reflects striking tactical parallels to his close ally and fellow media basher, US President Donald Trump.About 130 journalists from some 30 countries are participating in the four-day summit, which ends Wednesday. The world’s largest broadcasters, including the Christian Broadcasting Network, Daystar, Trinity Broadcasting Network and God TV, are all represented.Nitzan Chen, the director of Israel’s Government Press Office, said he believed the summit was long overdue, and that planners chose the 50th anniversary celebrations of Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem as a fitting occasion for the conference. For many years, Israel has held a summit for Jewish media outlets, cultivating those journalists as unofficial “ambassadors” to help promote Israel’s image abroad, he said. “Using the same logic,” it decided to reach out to Christian media, in what could become a regular event. To all my Christian friends: Thank you for your support! https://t.co/yv1pjORyeA— Hananya Naftali (@HananyaNaftali) October 17, 2017-The summit’s agenda includes meetings with top Israeli politicians, most from the nationalist side. Palestinian speakers barely appear on the agenda.Sessions include discussions on archaeology and Jewish-Christian relations, but also “radical Islam” and alleged media bias, legal “warfare” and Palestinian “incitement” against Israel. While Israel’s West Bank settlements are largely vilified in the West, participants are offered a chance to visit one.The media summit extends what has become a warm relationship between Israel and its evangelical supporters.Local charities raise millions of dollars from Christian friends around the world, and evangelical Christians make up a sizeable segment of the tourism industry. Last week, thousands of Christians gathered in Jerusalem for an annual celebration and parade coinciding with the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.According to Israel’s Tourism Ministry, evangelical Christians account for roughly one-fifth of all Christian tourists visiting the country. Among American Christian visitors, the number of evangelicals is much higher, at nearly 40 percent.“The evangelical market is one of our main target audiences,” said Eyal Carlin, director of the ministry’s Americas department. He said the ministry advertises in Christian media, sponsors trips for influential community leaders and works with Christian tour operators to offer visits with “faith-based or biblical themes.”Gordon Robertson, chief executive of the Christian Broadcasting Network and a summit participant, said evangelical support for Israel was deep and heartfelt. He described Israel’s modern-day history, from its founding in 1948 to its capture of East Jerusalem in 1967 to scenes last week of children laughing and playing in his Jerusalem hotel, as fulfilling biblical prophecy — the bedrock idea seemingly driving the Evangelicals’ support. He also talked of his strong personal affinity for Israel and the Jewish faith, noting that he enjoys studying the Hebrew Bible. “I like to joke, the longer I’m a Christian the more Jewish I become,” he said.CBN, known best for its “700 Club” show and which claims a worldwide audience of 360 million people, delivered its first satellite broadcast from Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives in 1976. Today, its Jerusalem operation is “one of our most productive bureaus in the world,” he said. While Robertson, the son of famed televangelist Pat Robertson, said he did not consider himself to be a direct partner of the Israeli government, he said, “I think we can be a partner with the Israeli people.”“Israel is obviously in a very difficult position with the Palestinians, with the Arab world, and there needs to be a voice that’s independent from Israel, saying, ‘wait a minute, Israel is actually doing the right thing,” he said. That strong support for Israel was evident at Netanyahu’s meeting with the visiting journalists.Netanyahu, who routinely spars with local media and has accused them of reporting “fake news” in their coverage of a series of corruption scandals, received a warm welcome.“Good to see you, my friend,” said one journalist before asking a question. “There’s no fake news here.”Netanyahu’s embrace of the Christian media echoes the strategy employed by Trump.White evangelicals were a core constituency that propelled Trump to victory in last year’s election. And even after the tumultuous start to his presidency, they remain staunch supporters. Trump, along with members of his administration and his family, have appeared regularly on CBN.Robertson said that Christian voters were drawn to Trump in part because of his strong support for Israel. “It’s absolutely an issue. It will absolutely determine a vote,” he said.Ahmad Majdalani, an aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said evangelical support for Israel is well-known but difficult to understand. He said that both Palestinian Christians and Muslims are harmed by Israeli policies.“I think those evangelical people are deluded by the Israeli propaganda,” he said. “I recommend they go to Bethlehem and see the large swatch of Christian land that was confiscated and turned into Jewish settlements.”Robertson echoed the Israeli claim that the Palestinians have rejected repeated peace offers and refused to recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. He also rejected a common “accusation” in Israel that evangelical Christians are here to convert Jews or prepare for the End of Days.“We really truly stand with Israel, and we really truly want to be dear friends,” he said. Not everyone agrees. Jeremy Ben Ami, president of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel group in Washington that is often critical of the Israeli government, said the evangelicals do not necessarily have Israel’s best interests in mind.“Israel should be wary of embracing extreme Christian Zionist groups that may be more concerned with their own theological agendas than with Israel’s long-term survival as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people,” he said.

Israel pumps new water saving push, as Sea of Galilee dives to century low-Massive rise in use of desalinated water has lulled the public into complacency, says Water Authority, while the crisis in natural water sources is accelerating-By Melanie Lidman-TOI-OCT 18

In 2009, in the midst of what was dubbed “the worst drought in 900 years,” the Water Authority embarked on a public awareness campaign to reduce the country’s water consumption. Some people expected it would be the authority’s last.In the past decade, five massive desalination plants have come online, transforming salty seawater into 600 million cubic meters of drinkable water per year, enough to cover 70 percent of the water used by homes and cities across the country. It seemed those ubiquitous “every drop counts” public service announcements were a relic of the past. Not so fast, said Uri Schor, the spokesperson for Israel’s Water Authority, who is in the midst of designing a large public awareness campaign for early 2018 to encourage people to save water in their homes.“The fact [that desalination] came online so quickly is amazing,” said Schor. “This hasn’t happened anywhere else in the world.”“But this has also made a small problem,” Schor added. “There’s no lack of water at home, so people don’t understand what’s happening outside. Outside, we are in a really serious drought. This has really affected natural water sources.”The Water Authority warned earlier this month that the Sea of Galilee is at a dangerously low level and expected to reach “the lowest level ever recorded.” Northern Israel has a deficit of 2.5 billion cubic liters of water, compared to non-drought years, the equivalent of a million Olympic-size swimming pools. This is water that normally flows through Israel’s streams and underground water tables toward the Sea of Galilee and other water sources. The north must receive at least 85 percent of the winter average rainfall this winter or the country can expect major streams and water sources to dry up, including the Banias River in the Golan Heights, something that has not occurred since meteorological record-keeping began in the region more than 100 years ago, said Schor. Last year, northern Israel received just 10% of the average winter rain.He said meteorologists have predicted that the coming winter will again be extremely dry in the north of the country. Doron Markel, the director of the Sea of Galilee division at the Water Authority, warned that this was indicative of “a permanent situation of climate change,” and the country will need to adjust accordingly.Hardest hit are the farmers, who are allocated a certain amount of water for the coming year and must plan their crops based on that water allocation. Over the past week, farmers protested against possible cuts in their water allowances due to the ongoing drought.Which is why the Water Authority is again utilizing TV commercials and social media to remind people that desalination hasn’t made water woes disappear.“Every one of us can use water efficiently and avoid wasting, even if you don’t lack water at home,” said Schor. “As we waste less, we’ll need to make less, and making water costs money.”Schor said it’s been difficult for the Israeli public to internalize this message, as experts trumpeted that desalination had solved Israel’s water crisis and the cost of water decreased by 35% over the past decade. The Water Authority recommends using devices in homes that mix air with water coming out of the taps. This reduces the amount of water used but gives the same impression of a strong stream.Previous water saving campaigns, including a NIS 5 million campaign with a TV announcement featuring some of Israel’s biggest stars like Bar Refaeli and Ninet Tayeb, have helped contribute to an 18% reduction in home water use.Municipalities replacing leaky pipes have also reduced municipal water loss by 9%.Despite the successes, Schor wants to make sure that the Israeli public doesn’t cease being conscious of the amount of water it’s using.“We can’t get to a situation where we’re using water just because,” he said. “This needs to be our permanent way of life. Water mustn’t be taken for granted.”

Netanyahu, Putin talk Syria tensions as Iran threatens from Damascus-Liberman says Israel can deal with challenge of Iran in Syria; sirens on IDF bases in Golan set off by fighting across border-By TOI staff-OCT 18,17

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Syrian conflict in a phone call Wednesday afternoon, two days after Israeli jets bombed an anti-aircraft battery near Damascus which had fired on an Israeli plane, the Kremlin said. The two leaders also discussed the Iran nuclear deal and Iraqi Kurdistan, according to Moscow.“There was a thorough discussion of ways to resolve the Syrian crisis, the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the results of the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan,” a statement from the Kremlin read. The report said the phone call was initiated by Israel. There was no immediate comment from the Prime Minister’s Office.Russia is one of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s strongest backers and Jerusalem has butted heads with Moscow over fears that Iran will use chaos in Syria to gain a foothold on Israel’s doorstep. On Wednesday afternoon rocket sirens rang out in IDF bases in the Golan Heights near Israel’s border with Syria. While the alarms were set off by internal fighting across the border, they underlined sky-high tensions in the area.Speaking shortly after the sirens, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Israel had “all the tools needed to deal” with the challenge of Iran in Syria.“The Iranians are trying to take control of Syria to become the dominant power there,” he said.Earlier Wednesday, Iran’s army chief threatened Israel while on a visit to Damascus, saying Tehran regards Israel’s violations of Syrian sovereignty as unacceptable.Liberman, who met this week with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu in Tel Aviv, said the threat underlined Israel’s oft-repeated warning that Iran was seeking to establish a permanent present there, and to target Israel, and said Israel would not allow this to happen.Russia entered the Syrian civil war in 2015 in support of the regime of Syria’s President Bashar Assad, carrying out bombing runs against rebel groups fighting against Damascus. Assad is also backed by Iran, which has provided the embattled Syrian leader with money, men and materiel. On Monday, Israeli jets bombed a Russian-made anti-aircraft battery near Damascus after a plane flying a reconnaissance mission in Lebanon was shot at, according to the Israel Defense Forces. Russia was kept informed of the Israeli action in real time, the IDF said. Also Wednesday, Iran’s military chief of staff warned that Tehran would not tolerate violations of Syrian sovereignty by Israel and vowed that the two countries would jointly fight against Syria’s enemies.“It is not acceptable for the Zionist regime to violate Syria any time it wants,” General Mohammad Bagheri said during a rare visit to Damascus that began Tuesday evening. In August Netanyahu held a three-hour meeting with the Russian leader in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, telling him that Israel was willing to act to prevent a continued Iranian military presence in Syria.Following that meeting Netanyahu said “Most of the discussion dealt with Iran’s attempt to establish a foothold in Syria in the places where ISIS was defeated and is leaving.”According to the PMO at that time, the prime minister speaks with Putin on a regular basis.“It must be noted that in the last two years Prime Minister Netanyahu has met with President Putin every few months to discuss bilateral and regional issues with the intention of preventing any clashes between Israeli and Russian air forces in Syria, with success until now,” the statement said.

Israel’s planned withdrawal from UNESCO unlikely to improve anything-Since the problem is with individual member states and not the institution itself, Jerusalem would only hurt its own interests by leaving, critics say-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-OCT 18,17

Very few things enjoy across the board support from rival political camps in Israel, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision last week to start “preparing” to leave UNESCO was one of them.Such is the animosity felt in Israel to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for its slew of anti-Israel resolutions passed in recent years — many denying a Jewish connection to the holiest historical sites in the Land of Israel. However, Israel’s pullout is unlikely to bring about the desired change at the organization, critics charge. If anything, it may negatively affect the Jewish state’s interests, they argue.Israelis have long debated whether it is better to engage with biased organizations, trying to improve them from the inside, or to quit in order to delegitimize such bodies. So far with UNESCO, Jerusalem has mostly opted for the first option, despite the mounting frustration with absurdly one-sided resolutions. Last week, the latter school of thought achieved a grand victory.First claiming victory, then quitting-The  irony is that Israel announced its desire to leave a day after it finally had some success there. And in part, the decision was spurred not by Israeli planning, but by a surprise US decision to quit.Jerusalem had just celebrated a major diplomatic success. On October 11, the organization’s Executive Board unanimously agreed to delay voting on a pair of anti-Israel resolutions.“The decisions you just adopted are, I hope, a wind of change that will mark the future of this organization,” Israel’s ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen, said right after the vote.“When Israel became a member of UNESCO 68 years ago, we shared a dream of a better world, a dream of a better future. We still hold this dream, and we still believe that UNESCO is able to contribute to a better world for our children,” he declared. In a statement commenting on the unprecedented “achievement,” Shama-Hacohen called it the “fruit of three years of hard, exhausting and frustrating diplomatic work. He added: “From this moment on we have already turned to the next round and there is no reason to rest on our laurels.”What he didn’t know at the time was that “the next round” would constitute him calling for his own position to be terminated. Because minutes after the US announced it was leaving UNESCO, Shama-Hacohen recommended that Israel follow suit. Some 30 hours after he had claimed victory in one battle and started preparing for the next one, he was suddenly urging Israel to quit the entire war. (According to Haaretz, Israel was blindsided by Washington’s decision to withdraw from UNESCO.) In another ironic twist, on October 13 — one day after Israel announced its intention to leave UNESCO — Audrey Azoulay, a Jewish woman who has relatives in Israel, defeated her Qatari rival and was elected the agency’s director-general.In remarks immediately after her success, Azoulay pleaded that member states must “get involved” in the organization at what she called “a time of crisis,” and “not leave it.”Israeli officials consider Azoulay’s victory to be good news, but even that didn’t affect their support for Jerusalem’s withdrawal from the cultural agency. Netanyahu on Sunday said he hoped UNESCO would abandon its “anti-Semitic” ways but added that he was not optimistic. “Therefore, my directive to leave the organization stands and we will move forward to carry it out,” he declared. Now is not a time for democracies to abandon UNESCO-Jerusalem’s decision was lamented not only by UNESCO but also by some member states and even Jewish groups usually critical of the cultural agency’s anti-Israel bias.“Now is not a time for democracies to abandon UNESCO,” said Shimon Samuels, director for international relations at the Simon Wiesenthal Center. “Their departure will leave a vacuum rapidly filled by the enemies of freedom.”Russia pointed out the irony of Israel quitting UNESCO a day after celebrating “a wind of change.”In a statement denouncing Israel’s withdrawal, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of Moscow’s Foreign Ministry, pointed out that Israel’s withdrawal “came at a time when a trend has emerged towards easing politicised tension during the discussion of ‘Palestinian resolutions’ concerning the preservation of Old Jerusalem and the restoration and development of the Gaza Strip as well as matters of culture, education, gender equality and youth work on the Palestinian territories.”Israel’s move “will put an end to the Russian-Israeli cooperation within the Organisation’s framework,” Zakharova added, citing educational efforts to prevent extremism and radicalism and programs to commemorate the Holocaust.Ironically, Russia is one of the countries that persistently voted in favor of the Arab-sponsored resolutions that prodded Israel to quit. However, when weighing Israel’s departure from UNESCO, it is important to remember that the decision to propose and support anti-Israel resolutions is made in capitals around the world and not at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters.“There is nothing wrong with the organization. The problem is with the member states who submit specific texts and vote the way they do,” said Yigal Palmor, a former spokesperson for Israel’s Foreign Ministry.UNESCO’s professional work “is just fine,” and many Israeli diplomats can attest to it, he added. “Israel has benefited professionally from working with UNESCO on specific programs, and all of this has nothing to do with the outrageous resolutions voted on at the Executive Committee.”Irina Bokova, the organization’s outgoing director-general, was certainly no enemy of Israel — on the contrary, Palmor said.“She has gone out of her traditional diplomatic discretion to express great discomfort at some of the votes on Israel, but of course this has not influenced one bit any of the countries that have gathered there to vote out of purely politicized calculations, diplomatic cowardice, scandalous indifference or a clear, downright anti-Israel agenda.”Jerusalem has good bilateral relations with Moscow, Beijing and others routinely backing pro-Palestinian resolutions in various international fora. “But in multilateral bodies, the rules of friendship change,” Palmor said. “So if we want to complain, we need to complain to the specific countries that raise their hand in favor of anti-Israel votes. They bear full responsibility, not the platform that has brought them together.”Proponents of Jerusalem’s decision argue that important countries quitting UNESCO will scare the remaining member states into combating one-sided anti-Israel resolutions, lest the US and Israel withdraw from other organizations as well.US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has warned that other UN bodies could also be on the American chopping block if they fail to rein in their anti-Israel obsession.“Today’s decision is a turning point for UNESCO. The organization’s absurd and shameful resolutions against Israel have consequences,” Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, said Thursday. “Today is a new day at the UN, where there is a price to pay for discrimination against Israel.”Palmor disagrees with this premise. Quitting UNESCO, he asserted, will most certainly not cause it become more Israel-friendly.“Would China or Cuba or Libya or Qatar be so deeply moved or confounded by the US leaving that it will make them engage in deep soul-searching to mend their ways? I don’t think so,” he said. Some European countries might get the message, he allowed, “but by and large the other troublemakers at UNESCO will not be moved.”Did the US push Israel into a corner? Shmuel Rosner, a journalist and senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute, suggested that Israel doesn’t really want to quit UNESCO. The entire UN system, and many other international organizations, are inherently biased against the Jewish state, and yet Israel’s strategy has always been to try to effect change from the inside, he argued.Israel announced it was quitting UNESCO only because the US administration left it no other choice, Rosner wrote in Wednesday’s International New York Times.“Israel can’t possibly let the United States leave an organization over anti-Israel bias and still remain a member itself. At the same time, Israel also can’t appear ungrateful toward the United States and hint that leaving Unesco might not be the best move for Israel,” he wrote.“But the truth is, Israel would prefer to continue its longtime strategy at the United Nations: staying a member and fighting for Israel’s interests. Israel would rather work on getting Unesco to improve — become a little less hostile, and even more so, less obsessed with Israel. But now that option seems to be in danger.”On October 12, the US State Department notified UNESCO of its desire to withdraw from the organization. According to the UNESCO Constitution, that decision will take effect on December 31, 2018 (there is no way to leave sooner).Israel, on the other hand, has yet to formally notify UNESCO about its intention to quit, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon said Wednesday. So far, Jerusalem has merely “started preparing” for the move, he said.In other words, it is not too late for Israel to withdraw from the withdrawal.

Iran military chief warns: Israeli violations of Syria are ‘unacceptable’-Mohammad Bagheri speaks from Damascus before talks to expand military cooperation there, while Ayatollah Khamenei threatens Iran will 'shred' nuke deal if Trump reneges-By TOI staff and AP-OCT 18,17

Iran’s military chief of staff indicated Wednesday that Tehran would not tolerate violations of Syrian sovereignty by Israel and vowed that the two countries would jointly fight against Syria’s enemies. His comments came after Israel on Monday struck an anti-aircraft battery inside Syria, which followed the firing of a Syrian missile at Israeli planes on reconnaissance flights over Lebanon.“We cannot accept a situation where the Zionist entity attacks Syria from the ground and the air,” General Mohammad Bagheri said during a rare visit to Damascus that began Tuesday evening. He said he was in the Syrian capital to coordinate and cooperate “in order to fight our common enemies — whether they are the Zionists or the terrorists. We discussed ways to strengthen relations in the future and outlined the basic principles of this cooperation,” he said. #Iran’s top military commander visiting #Syria for defense talkshttps://t.co/vZCNwD4I5c#Baqeri pic.twitter.com/YSCiJqc2az— Iran (@Iran) October 18, 2017-Bagheri arrived in Damascus with what the Tasnim news agency described as a high-ranking delegation. His comments were made at a joint press conference with Ali Abdullah Ayoub, his counterpart in the Syrian army.Bagheri was also expected to meet with Syrian leader Bashar Assad.Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei meanwhile warned Wednesday that if US President Donald Trump reneges on the nuclear deal signed in 2015, “Iran will shred it.”He also said he did not have time for the “nonsensical comments by the foul-mouthed president.”He welcomed the support expressed by European leaders for the deal but said it did not go far enough.“European governments have underlined the nuclear deal’s issue and condemned the US president’s remarks,” he said on his official website. “We welcome this approach but it’s not enough that they only tell him not to tear up the deal.”In a move applauded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump announced Friday that he would not recertify the 2015 nuclear accord signed by Iran and world powers which curbs Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. The US could “terminate the deal” if it could not bring about better terms and better enforcement of the current accord, Trump said, warning that his government could yet walk away from “one of the worst” agreements in history. The EU’s chief diplomat Federica Mogherini announced Monday she would visit Washington early next month to defend the Iran nuclear deal and urge US lawmakers not to pull out of it.That was after the leaders of France, Britain and Germany rebuked Trump in a joint statement which said the deal remained “in our shared national security interest.” Russia and China also voiced their support for the deal.UN inspectors have repeatedly certified that Iran is sticking to its technical requirements under the accord, but Trump has insisted that the “fanatical regime” in Tehran was not living up to the “spirit” of the deal.

Migrating pelicans can once again stop by for a mouthful of fish in Israel. The Agriculture Ministry said Wednesday it will keep funding a pet project to feed thousands of Great White Pelicans who fly annually over the country. The idea is to centralize their feeding ground at a central Israeli reservoir so the birds do not harm the livelihood of farmers by poaching fish from nearby breeding grounds. The ministry had previously said it was going to stop the project, claiming it was not responsible for feeding migrating animals passing through from Europe to Africa. But under pressure from farmers and environmentalists, it reconsidered.Israel’s nature reserves authority welcomed the decision and said it hoped funding would continue for the sake of both farmers and pelicans.
