EZEKIEL 39:17-21
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF RUSSIAN/ISLAMIC HORDES AGAINST ISRAEL)
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

REVELATION 19:17-18
17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;(AGAINST ALL NATIONS ARMIES THAT COME AGAINST JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL)
18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

EZEKIEL 38:1-7

6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

Pressure mounts on global efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation-[Christian Science Monitor]-Ned Temko-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

As private clubs go, few have managed to remain so exclusive for so long. And none has had a more profound effect on international politics: ensuring that the concluding horror of World War II, the atomic-bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, would not usher in an age of nuclear conflict around the world in the years that followed.Yet amid all the other uncertainties surrounding the planned US summit with North Korea, it is becoming clear that the “club” of nine nuclear-weapons states – and the wider cause of nuclear non-proliferation – are facing unprecedented new pressures. In fact, it is possible that we could be entering an age of proliferation, in which more countries will move to acquire nuclear weapons. Since one prime possibility for a new nuclear arms race is the politically unstable Middle East, there is an additional danger: that non-state groups – like Al Qaeda, its offshoots or rivals – could eventually gain access to nuclear weapons material as well.Though the non-proliferation rĂ©gime has been under growing pressure in recent years, it now faces a potentially critical challenge. This is not just because the North Koreans, despite serial international efforts to find a diplomatic way to prevent them from doing so, have succeeded in going nuclear. It is that by doing so, they have reaped palpable political benefits. North K orean dictator Kim Jong-un has gone from being derided as “little rocket man” to getting an invitation from the President of the United States to sit down face-to-face for summit talks.Meanwhile, the international agreement to freeze the nuclear-weapons program of Iran is precariously balanced, following President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal and his decision to impose tough new sanctions. The key question is how, and whether, the Americans and others in the international community can succeed in halting Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon and convince or prevent other would-be nuclear states from following suit.In some ways, it’s amazing non-proliferation has done so well for so many decades. Although the USSR broke the Americans’ atomic monopoly several years after World War Two, by the late 1960s only four other countries had tested and developed nuclear weapons: Britain, France, China and Israel.Yet things began to change dramatically after nonaligned India tested its first nuclear weapon in 1974. By the end of the 1980s, India’s neighbor and rival, Pakistan, had gone nuclear. Even more significantly, technology and expertise from Pakistan’s clandestine nuclear program was passed on to other countries, including Libya, Iran, and North Korea. North Korea, in turn, provided key help in a bid by Syria to develop a nuclear weapon in the early 2000s.There are now twin challenges. First, the technological and scientific barriers have become easier for would-be nuclear powers to overcome or evade. And short of preemptive military action – like the Israeli air strikes which prevented first Iraq in 1981, and then Syria in 2007, from developing a nuclear weapon – it’s not clear that the mix of diplomatic carrot-and-stick that was employed in the past to limit the spread of nuclear weapons will necessarily work.Far from paying a major price for getting over the nuclear finishing line, the most recent entries to the nuclear-weapons club – India, Pakistan, and now North Korea – have reaped strategic and political benefits. And the one example of a country that did negotiate away its nuclear-weapons program – Libya – is unlikely to act as an incentive for others to do likewise. That 2003 agreement did lead to an easing of isolation and sanctions on Libya, and to active moves by major Western states to bring Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi into the international fold. But he ultimately ended up being captured, beaten and killed in a 2011 uprising in which NATO countries sided with the rebels. The two earliest nonproliferation challenges are likely to come in Asia and the Middle East, and the first may be easier to navigate. Among North Korea’s neighbors, both South Korea and Japan are economically advanced countries that could, if they felt it necessary, develop a nuclear weapon. But like a number of West European countries in the early years of the nuclear weapons age, they have long chosen to rely on the security umbrella of the United States. Depending on the diplomatic results of the Trump-Kim summit, that arrangement could still hold. The Middle East situation is potentially more fraught. If Iran does resume, and succeed in, its effort to become a nuclear-weapons state, even Washington’s considerable diplomatic leverage in the region might not forestall one or more of the Iranians’ major Sunni Muslim rivals – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – from pursuing a nuclear option of their own.

Israel green-lights 2,000 settlement homes; half are outside blocs-Among the 1,957 houses advanced, 696 gain final approval; over 1,000 more expected to be marketed by Housing Ministry in coming weeks-By Jacob Magid-TOI-MAY 30,18

The Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction advanced plans for nearly 2,000 homes in the West Bank on Wednesday.Of the 1,957 homes green-lighted by the Civil Administration’s High Planning subcommittee, 696 gained final approval for construction while 1,262 cleared an earlier planning stage known as a “deposit.”Roughly half of the homes advanced will be located in isolated settlements, outside the so-called settlement blocs that most Israeli leaders argue will remain part of the Jewish state in any peace deal with the Palestinians.Among the plans that gained final approval for construction was a 102-home project in the South Hebron Hills settlement of Negohot.A map pinpointing the settlements where building plans received final approval. The South Hebron Hills regional council chairman Yochai Damari thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman in a Wednesday statement.“In recent years, we have been working with the help of government ministers to build and develop the communities of the South Hebron Hills into a strong and well-established settlement bloc that maintains thousands of acres of state land and constitutes a security buffer protecting southern Israel,” Damari said.Other projects that gained final approval for construction included a 54-home plan in the northern West Bank settlement of Har Bracha, an 84-home plan in the Etzion Bloc settlement of Nokdim, and a 70-home plan in the central West Bank settlement of Ateret.Among the plans green-lighted through the “deposit” stage was a project of 189 homes in the settlement of Talmon, northeast of Ramallah. However, the slated neighborhood is not contiguous with the built-up area of the community, leading the left-wing NGO Peace Now to label it a new settlement entirely.Other projects that advanced through the “deposit” planning stage included a 136-home project in the southern West Bank settlement of Tene Omarim, a 206-home project in Tzufim, and a 166-home project in Alei Zahav. The number of homes advanced Wednesday differed starkly from the 3,900 units that Liberman pledged would be approved in a statement last week. Part of the reason for the discrepancy had to do with the fact that roughly a quarter (1,195) of the houses the defense minister mentioned are up for approval through a stage called “marketing.”In this extra step in the planning process, homes are marketed by the Housing Ministry to private contractors, who are then responsible for carrying out the construction. However, this is not an approval that the High Planning subcommittee convenes to grant. It is likely that those 1,195 homes in city-settlements such as Ariel and Ma’ale Adumim will be marketed in the coming weeks.A map pinpointing the settlements where building plans were advanced through the “deposit” planning stage. The remaining discrepancy between Liberman’s numbers and the amount of homes approved Wednesday arose from the fact that the defense minister appeared to recount some 700 homes that had already been approved in previous Civil Administration meetings.

Restrictions lifted on Israelis near Gaza as respite in rocket fire holds-Additional forces deployed along border area; high-level security cabinet set to convene on conflict in south-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross-MAY 30,18

The Home Front Command was lifting restrictions on residents in the Gaza periphery, who were instructed earlier in the day to avoid outdoor activity, as an uneasy calm took hold in southern Israel.Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the army was rolling back its earlier instructions to stay close to bomb shelters, following a nearly 12-hour respite in rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. The high-level security cabinet was set to hold a meeting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to review the situation, and repair work began on power lines in southern Israel that supply electricity to the Palestinian enclave and had been damaged by the volley of rocket fire.Hamas had claimed an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement had been reached with Israel, a claim Jerusalem denied earlier on Wednesday. But a senior Israeli defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated to reporters that an understanding had been reached under which Israel would not conduct additional strikes in Gaza as long as no more rockets or mortar shells were fired. The Eshkol Regional Council said earlier on Wednesday that while schools were operating as usual, an increased number of security personnel were deployed in the area and in accordance with Education Ministry instructions, no outside activities were held within 15 kilometers (9.5 miles) from the Gaza border.Army Radio reported that overnight Tuesday-Wednesday, Israeli Electric Corporation workers began work to repair power lines which were damaged by a Palestinian rocket, cutting of electric supplies to areas in southern Gaza. The damage to three power lines leading to Gaza was preventing the flow of electricity to the southern areas of the beleaguered coastal enclave, an IEC spokesperson said Tuesday evening, leaving tens of thousands of Gazans with no electricity.Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz had ordered the company to hold off repair work until the fire ended in the restive border region, so as not to “not endanger its workers.” However, the work began even though rocket fire continued until 5 a.m.In light of the ongoing tensions with Gaza, the military decided to postpone a planned ceremony for Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi to take over as head of the IDF Southern Command from Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The ceremony was due to take place on Sunday, but has been pushed back to Wednesday, the army said. Halevi comes to his new position after serving as head of Military Intelligence. Zamir will end his tenure as head of the Southern Command after nearly three years in the position.A senior defense official said Wednesday that Israel was prepared to refrain from further attacks on Gaza if terror factions in the Strip also kept the peace, indicating that an informal ceasefire has taken hold after a restive day.The Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, deployed forces on the ground and along the border in an effort to maintain quiet and stop any further rocket fire at Israel, Hadashot news reported. The Israeli Air Force bombed dozens of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad facilities across the Gaza Strip in two rounds of air raids, on Tuesday afternoon and predawn Wednesday, amid the largest exchange between Israel and Gazan terrorist groups since the 2014 war. The escalation began with a barrage of mortar shells fired into southern Israel by Islamic Jihad on Tuesday morning, one of which landed outside a kindergarten shortly before the children arrived.Over the course of 22 hours, from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 5:17 a.m. Wednesday, sirens were triggered at least 166 times in southern Israel, according to the IDF Home Front Command, by mortar fire, rockets or, in some cases, heavy machine gun fire. The military has yet to release a final tally for the number of projectiles fired at southern Israel from Gaza, but it is likely to approach 200.From the end of the 2014 Gaza war until Tuesday, approximately 80 projectiles were fired from Gaza into Israel, according to Israeli figures.Dozens of the incoming mortar shells and rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, which proved relatively successful for the first time against the short-range mortar fire. Others landed in open fields in southern Israel. A small number landed inside Israeli communities, including a mortar round that directly hit a home in the Eshkol region and the shell that exploded in the yard of a kindergarten. Parts of a rocket also struck a sports center in the town of Netivot, causing damage to the facility but no injuries.

After failures in 2014 war, Iron Dome shows it can now down mortar fire too-This isn't the first time the missile defense system has intercepted shells that are in the air for just 15 seconds, but it's the first major operational test -- and it passed-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-MAY 30,18

The Iron Dome missile defense system succeeded on Tuesday where it had been entirely ineffective during the 2014 Gaza war: in shooting down incoming mortar shells that are in the air for just 15 seconds.“The Iron Dome has been quite effective,” IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told reporters. “It’s probably something [Gazan terrorist groups] didn’t take into account.”This was not the first time that the Iron Dome has intercepted mortar fire, but Tuesday represented a significant test for the system, which the military believes it passed.Over the course of Tuesday, scores of mortar shells, and some rockets, were fired at southern Israel by the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip.Conricus said the shells, fired by the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad, appeared to be an Iranian-made variety that had been smuggled into the coastal enclave.According to the Israel Defense Forces, Iron Dome batteries succeeded in shooting down at least 25 incoming projectiles over the course of the day, most of them mortar rounds, though the army said it had yet to calculate a final tally.Mortar fire by terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip killed several Israelis during the 2014 Gaza war, including four-year-old Daniel Tragerman from Kibbutz Nahal Oz.In the four years that have passed, Israel has worked continuously to improve the system to counter this threat. This included technological improvements and efforts to streamline the work of the soldiers operating the system. The Walla news site reported that the army also changed the way in which the batteries were deployed along the Gaza border on Wednesday in order to give them a better chance of intercepting the dozens of mortar shells fired at southern Israel. The Iron Dome system was initially designed to shoot down incoming rockets and missiles, which it did effectively during the 2014 conflict, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge.Over the years, the system has been upgraded to also be able to intercept drones and mortar rounds. The Iron Dome’s first reported interception of mortar fire occurred in September 2016, when a battery in northern Israel shot down two incoming errant shells fired from Syria that were heading toward the Golan Heights, in an apparent case of spillover fire from the civil war there.Mortar shells present a far greater challenge for the Iron Dome than rockets, owing to the shells’ shorter range — normally no more than four kilometers (2.5 miles). In order for the Iron Dome to intercept an incoming projectile, the system must first spot it, determine based on its trajectory if it is heading toward a populated area and, if so, launch an interceptor missile to shoot it down.Rockets and missiles remain in the air for far longer as they travel toward their target, which gives the Iron Dome’s automated systems and the soldiers that operate it more time to carry out these steps.Mortar shells, on the other hand, are in the air for far less time. Residents of the Israeli communities closest to the Gaza border have 15 seconds to reach a bomb shelter once a mortar shell is fired.Tuesday showed that the Iron Dome is capable of shooting down mortar shells in this amount of time, though military officials repeatedly stressed that the system was not perfect.“Nothing is hermetic, nothing is 100 percent,” IDF Spokesperson Ronen Manelis told Israel Radio on Tuesday afternoon. For instance, one mortar shell from the first barrage of the day exploded in the yard of a kindergarten in southern Israel’s Eshkol region, just before children were due to arrive.A caretaker at the school was lightly wounded by shrapnel from the shell.Another mortar shell struck a military position east of the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, injuring three soldiers. Two of the servicemen were lightly wounded and released from the hospital a few hours later. The third was moderately injured and required surgery, a spokesperson for Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center said.

Palestinian arrested near West Bank settlement; handgun found in car-Colt-style pistol discovered in gearbox of vehicle near Shilo; car was pulled over by Israeli security forces-By Jacob Magid-TOI-MAY 30,18

Border police officers arrested a Palestinian man on Wednesday after they discovered a handgun hidden in his car near the Israeli settlement of Shilo, north of Jerusalem, police said. The man was driving in a way officers described as “suspicious” in the early hours of the morning.Officers, who stopped the car and searched it, discovered the Colt-style handgun, along with several magazines and a holster for the pistol, hidden in the vehicle’s gearbox. The man who is in his 40s, is a resident of Nablus, some 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) north of Shiloh. On Tuesday, two Palestinians broke into an empty house in the Har Bracha settlement. Israeli soldiers opened fire on the Palestinians, injuring one of them in the lower body and then capturing him. The second one fled and was later arrested, police said.Last week, security forces arrested two Palestinians suspected of shooting at an Israeli vehicle outside Ramallah in the West Bank.In January, an Israeli man was fatally shot while driving near Nablus in a terror attack. Rabbi Raziel Shevach, 35, a father of six, came under fire in his car while driving past the Havat Gilad Junction.

Swiss FM questions UNRWA’s role in aiding Palestinians-Ignazio Cassis reiterates that Palestinian UN agency 'part of the problem,' says his country should debate foreign funding projects-By TOI staff and AP-MAY 30,18

Switzerland’s new foreign minister said the international community should decide whether the UN refugee agency for Palestinians has become a “state within a state,” and questioned whether the Swiss should continue to help funding it.In what critics call a break from vaunted Swiss neutrality, Ignazio Cassis doubled down on comments he made earlier this month that UNRWA had strayed too far from its original mandate to help Palestinians refugees temporarily. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) was established after Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, when around 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes.Switzerland has given UNRWA more than $20 million annually in the last five years, and plans to continue similar funding through 2020.But Cassis told the RTS radio station Wednesday that the Swiss people have the right to debate where public funding abroad is going.“This allows the Swiss people to ask themselves what our country is doing and perhaps come to the conclusion that it is the best way forward at the moment,” he said.Cassis brushed off backlash sparked by his comments. “What I said, I said after a long discussion with the director general of UNRWA, so I spoke with full knowledge of the facts,” he told RTS.After visiting Jordan earlier this month, Cassis said that UNRWA was once part of the solution, but has become “part of the problem” in the Middle East. The minister pointed out that the number of Palestinians listed as refugees — the vast majority of whom are descendants of refugees — living in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, the West Bank, and Gaza has swelled to more than five million. This is because, unlike other refugee populations worldwide, the UN extends refugee status to the children and subsequent descendants of the original Palestinian refugees.“It is unrealistic that this dream [of return] will be fulfilled for all,” he said in an interview given to several German-language papers owned by the Swiss NZZ group. “But UNRWA maintains this hope. For me, the question is whether UNRWA is part of the solution or part of the problem,” he said, concluding that “it is both.”The UN agency, he added, “worked as a solution for a long time, but today it has become part of the problem.”“It provides ammunition to continue the conflict. For as long as Palestinians live in refugee camps, they will want to return to their homeland,” he said. “By supporting UNRWA, we are keeping the conflict alive.”A risk Switzerland cannot afford-UNRWA is, meanwhile, struggling to cover a massive budget shortfall, after major donor Washington slashed its 2018 funding. The administration of US President Donald Trump has opted to cut the $360 million offered in 2017 to a commitment of just $60 million this year, leaving UNRWA scrambling to raise nearly half a billion dollars to guarantee services until the end of the year.Switzerland is among a group of countries that together pledged about $100 million in March to help fill the shortfall.Despite his skepticism of the role UNRWA is playing in the Middle East, Cassis warned that the sudden funding cut facing the agency posed “a big risk.”“Millions of Palestinians could take to the streets,” he said, cautioning that lacking funds could cause the breakdown of a “machinery that provides stability.”“This is a risk that Switzerland cannot afford,” he said.Cassis said his country would continue funding UNRWA, but he also called for a heavier focus on integrating Palestinian refugees into their host communities. He said for instance that “instead of supporting UNRWA schools and hospitals, we could help the Jordanian institutions promote integration of Palestinian refugees.”

After night in bomb shelter, family wakes up to discover porch hit by rocket-Naomi Fletcher saw pottery scattered on lawn and blamed the cats; then she saw the projectile and a yawning meter-wide hole-By TOI staff-MAY 30,18

An Israeli family near the Gaza border awoke on Wednesday morning to discover their porch had suffered a direct hit from a rocket fired from the coastal enclave.Naomi and Roni Fletcher had spent the night in the fortified room of their home in the Eshkol region. When they stepped into their garden in the morning, they found a crater from a rocket that caused significant damage to a shed adjacent to the house, Naomi Fletcher told Hadashot television. The rocket impact caused a meter-wide hole in the floor and destroyed nearby garden furniture.“Sometime overnight a rocket apparently fell at my house,” she said. “My husband and I were home without the kids. At first I went to sleep in my bed, next to where the rocket fell.”“When the [rocket alert] siren went off at 11 p.m., my husband said we weren’t going to be able to sleep if we had to wake up every time [a rocket was launched from Gaza], so we went to sleep in the secure room,” she added.Fletcher told the TV station that when she opened the door at 6:45 a.m. and saw broken pottery scattered on the lawn, she initially thought that cats had caused the damage. She then saw the remains of a rocket and the crater and realized what had happened.“When I got up I wanted to see what was happening outside because I thought the cats had caused damage. Then I saw a pipe stuck in the ground and understood that something had landed here,” she said. Also overnight, fragments of a rocket that had apparently been intercepted by the Iron Dome landed in a sports facility in Netivot, some 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Gaza border. This was the first time a rocket from Gaza had gone that far since 2014’s Operation Protective Edge. The shards of the projectile caused light damage to a number of structures, but no injuries. Several people, who were close by at the time, were said to have suffered a panic attack.A video, shared by Channel 10 news on social media, showed a cloud of smoke coming out of the area following the impact.Over the course of 22 hours, from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 5:17 a.m. Wednesday, sirens were triggered at least 166 times in southern Israel, according to the IDF Home Front Command, by mortar fire, rockets or, in some cases, heavy machine gun fire. The military has yet to release a final tally for the number of projectiles fired at southern Israel from Gaza, but it is likely to approach 200.From the end of the 2014 Gaza war until Tuesday, approximately 80 projectiles were fired from Gaza into Israel, according to Israeli figures.Despite the attacks, schools in the region opened on schedule Wednesday morning. The Eshkol Regional Council said that while schools were operating as usual, an increased number of security personnel were deployed in the area and in accordance with Education Ministry instructions, no outside activities were held within 15 kilometers (9.5 miles) from the Gaza border. All restrictions were lifted on Gaza periphery residents on Wednesday at 6 p.m., after a 12-hour respite in rocket fire and as an informal ceasefire appeared to stick.Late Tuesday, Israeli warplanes hit some 25 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in a second wave of retaliatory strikes, the army said. The military said fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft bombed a Hamas drone facility, rocket manufacturing plant, advanced weapons depot, military compounds, training camps and weapons factories.Video from Gaza showed large explosions rocking the area as aircraft were heard roaring overhead. It was the second round of strikes carried out by the IDF in response to the mortar and rocket fire from Gaza. Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli aircraft targeted approximately 40 positions in the Gaza Strip belonging to the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups.Above: Israeli aircraft strike Hamas targets in Gaza overnight Wednesday.Earlier, Hamas and the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad released a joint statement claiming responsibility for the dozens of rockets and mortar shells fired at southern Israel throughout the day.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Germany condemns ‘malicious’ Palestinian (SEX FOR MURDER DEATH CULT ISLAMIST-MY ADD CAUSE I.M GERMAN ALSO) attacks on Israel-'No justification under any circumstances' for launches from Gaza, says Berlin's Israel embassy, joining much of international community-By Michael Bachner-TOI-MAY 30,18

Germany on Wednesday joined much of the international community in condemning the firing of more than 100 mortar shells and rockets at Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip within 24 hours by Palestinian terror groups, calling the targeting of civilians during Tuesday morning’s rush hour “malicious.”“Germany unequivocally condemns the escalation of violence. There is no justification, under any circumstances, for the continuation of the massive mortar attack on Israel from Gaza,” Berlin’s embassy in Israel said in a statement.“Especially malicious was the firing of a large portion of the rockets at Israeli cities and communities exactly during the hours of heavy traffic when people go to work,” the statement continued. “As a result of that barrage, a kindergarten was hit, among others. We wish the wounded a speedy recovery.“It is Israel’s right to [preserve] its security, defend its borders and respond proportionately to attacks,” it concluded.Over the course of 22 hours, from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 5:17 a.m. Wednesday, sirens were triggered at least 166 times in southern Israel, according to the IDF Home Front Command, by mortar fire, rockets or, in some cases, heavy machine gun fire. At least 110 projectiles were fired by Islamic Jihad, Hamas and other terror organizations.A reported Egyptian-brokered informal ceasefire between Palestinian terror groups and Israel appeared to be holding on Wednesday, with both sides blaming the other for the flareup.Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday mobilized its diplomats stationed worldwide to engage decision-makers and leading media outlets, asking them to demand harsh condemnations of the mortar and rocket barrages that hit Israel’s south during the day.International condemnation rained down on Hamas and Islamic Jihad, much of it focusing on the mortar shell that landed in a kindergarten playground shortly before children arrived.Envoys for the European Union, the United Nations, the US administration, France, Italy and Ireland were among those who criticized the Palestinians and expressed support for Israel.Dozens of the incoming mortar shells and rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. Others landed in open fields in southern Israel. A small number landed inside Israeli communities, including a mortar round that directly hit a home in the Eshkol region early Wednesday morning. Parts of a rocket also struck a sports center in the town of Netivot, causing damage to the facility but no injuries. In total, four people, three of them soldiers, were injured by the mortar attacks. One of the soldiers was moderately hurt, requiring surgery, while the other casualties were lightly wounded and quickly released from the hospital after treatment. In response to the repeated mortar and rocket attacks, the army carried out two waves of aerial bombardments in Gaza, hitting approximately 65 targets in total, including a Hamas attack tunnel, drone facilities and rocket manufacturing plants, according to the Israel Defense Forces.Judah Ari Gross and Raphael Ahren contributed to this report.

The curious common interest behind the rapid Gaza-Israel flare-up and flare-down-Hamas and Israel remain bitter enemies, but neither of them wants an all-out war, and so both sought to prevent a day's escalation from turning into something far more devastating-By Avi Issacharoff-TOI-MAY 30,18

With the tailing off of the Gaza conflict, and the end to the barrages into Israel and the IDF’s counterstrikes, it’s plain that the shared desire of both Hamas and Israel for a return to “normality,” and the avoidance of war, prevailed. Proof of this is that the status quo ante has been restored, with no change to the previous understandings between the sides. Israel and Hamas recommitted to their familiar formula: quiet will be met with quiet.Neither side wants an escalation. To use a boxing analogy, Islamic Jihad and Hamas, and then Israel, put on the gloves for 24 hours, but heeded the bell and retired to their corners at the end of the round. What set off the hostilities this time? Each side naturally has its version. In the days preceding the escalation, three Islamic Jihad operatives were killed in an IDF strike at Rafah, and a Hamas operative was killed in the north of the Strip in an incident in which two other Gazans cut through the border fence. Hamas and Islamic Jihad assert that the barrage of mortar and rocket fire at Israel on Tuesday was intended to convey the message to Israel that those deaths were unacceptable, and that they would not accept an ostensible new IDF equation for Gaza. In their telling, it is a breach of previous understandings when “innocent” activities — by which they also mean cutting and crossing through the border fence — are met with fatal Israeli fire. This narrative, however, conveniently neglects to mention that all four of the Gazan fatalities were terror group members operating close to the border, that Israeli troops came under fire in the incident in which the Hamas operative was killed, and that the Islamic Jihad members had placed an explosive device at the fence. Now that the flames have died down a little, these two terrorist organizations are marketing their fire into Israel as a fully coordinated, joint operation. In reality, the picture is likely more complicated: After the three Islamic Jihad operatives were killed, and it sought to respond, the group’s masters in Tehran encouraged an escalation. For its part, Hamas initially ignored the mortar fire, in order to allow Islamic Jihad to let off steam, but then joined in with the attacks on Israel so as not to lose too many points in Palestinian public opinion. At the same time, Hamas was conveying messages to Egypt within hours of the start of the barrages that it wanted a return to the previous truce.Meanwhile, on the Israeli side, various senior ministers were indicating an ostensible desire to hit the Gaza terrorists hard while also conveying a sense of “hold us back.” But in Israel, too, it was patently obvious that there was a desire to return to the familiar, if fragile, quiet.Even when hitting back, the Israeli army was careful mainly to target unmanned positions and facilities. As of this writing, there was not a single Gazan fatality reported in the dozens of Israeli retaliatory strikes.Rocket and mortar fire from Gaza was far more indiscriminate; in the first Islamic Jihad barrage on Tuesday morning a shell exploded in the yard of a kindergarten. Nonetheless, it appeared that the terror group commanders did not wish to lose complete control and to force Israel into a harsher response. That first barrage came before the children had arrived.Looking at both sides, there was almost the sense of an unseen hand coordinating where to fire and how heavily, until the previous calm had been restored. This makes for a curious bottom line. Hamas and Israel, bitter enemies, are both desperately determined to preserve the current situation with respect to Israel-Gaza. This is because the alternative to ongoing tense calm is war — which is likely to bring the fall of Hamas on one hand, and chaos and a much more complex security situation for Israel on the other.Despite this curious common interest, and even as the truce takes fragile hold, the dire economic and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip means that the potential for a descent into war is ever-present — even though war is something both sides so anxiously want to avoid.

Fast lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano closes highway-[Reuters]-By Jolyn Rosa-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

HONOLULU (Reuters) - Fast-moving lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano forced officials to close part of a highway on Tuesday, and they warned that sharp, thin strands of volcanic glass fibers carried by the wind could injure eyes and lungs. As lava crossed Highway 132, officials shut a stretch of road from Lava Tree State Park to Four Corners and told residents who had not evacuated to leave the area immediately. The lava flow destroyed a farm where Kevin Hopkins and partners raise tropical fish and the ornamental carp known as koi. "It just came over and ate the farm, boiled the water out of the ponds," Hopkins said.Earlier on Tuesday, a small explosion of ash erupted from the summit of the volcano in a vertical plume some 15,000 feet (4,600 meters) high, the U.S. Geological Survey said, the latest outburst in a month of volcanic activity. The agency warned that ash was drifting northwest and liable to affect anyone in the summit area. Hundreds of people have been ordered to leave the vicinity of one of the world's most active volcanoes in its biggest eruption cycle in a century.Kilauea entered its fourth week of what may be an unprecedented, simultaneous eruption at its summit crater and along a six-mile (9.7-km) string of fissures 25 miles (40 km) down its east flank.Lava flows from multiple fissures have blocked roads and damaged dozens of buildings on Hawaii's Big Island.Lava has also destroyed more than 400 electric poles and other equipment, causing power outages, the utility Hawaii Electric Light reported. It is unclear how many homes and businesses were without power. One fountain of lava rose more than 200 feet (60 meters) at times on Monday, the Geological Survey said.Officials are on high alert for occasional earthquakes, though most have been small.Lava has engulfed the heads of two wells that tap into steam and gas deep into the Earth at the 38-megawatt Puna Geothermal Venture electrical plant, which used to produce a quarter of the Big Island's electricity. Its operator, Israeli-controlled Ormat Technologies Inc, said it had not been able to assess the damage. So far no deaths have been blamed on the eruption, though a man's leg was shattered when he was hit by a plate-size chunk of lava rock.Residents fear the electrical plant's deep geothermal wells may be explosive. Officials have said the power plant is safe but lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world, creating a measure of uncertainty.Contingency plans have been made for a possible helicopter evacuation of up to 1,000 residents in a coastal area south of the fissures should their last exit route, State Highway 130, become blocked by lava or become unsafe due to gaping cracks, County of Hawaii officials said.At least 82 homes have been destroyed in the southeastern corner of Big Island and about 2,000 people have been ordered evacuated since Kilauea began erupting on May 3.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa and Marco Garcia; Writing and additional reporting by Jonathan Allen and Sharon Bernstein; Editing by Sandra Maler and Darren Schuettler)

Malaysia's leader expresses regret over ending MH370 search-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday that his country regrets having to end the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and will consider resuming the hunt for the plane if any new information emerges. The final search effort, focused on the seabed in the distant Indian Ocean, ended Tuesday after more than three months. Malaysia had signed a "no cure, no fee" deal with U.S. technology company Ocean Infinity to resume the hunt in January, a year after the official search by Australia, Malaysia and China was called off, and nearly four years after the plane went missing.Mahathir said Malaysia has come to a stage "where we cannot keep on searching for something we really cannot find.""If anybody has any information, we will consider resuming the search, but at the moment we have to put a stop to the search," he told a news conference. "We regret very much and we understand the feelings of the relatives, but we cannot keep on searching for this 370 forever."The plane vanished with 239 people on board on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Confirmed debris that washed ashore in the western Indian Ocean helped narrow the search area where Ocean Infinity focused. The company said Tuesday that the search covered more than 112,000 square kilometers (43,000 square miles) of ocean floor — an area more than four times larger than the zone targeted by experts as the most likely crash site — but failed to uncover any evidence in one of the world's biggest aviation mysteries.Ocean Infinity stood to be paid $70 million if it had found the wreckage or black boxes.Transport Minister Anthony Loke said later Wednesday that the international safety investigation team is expected to finalize and release its final report on the case by July.Loke said the government remains "ever hopeful that we will be able to find the answers we seek and new information will come to light and that at some point in the future, the aircraft will be located."Voice370, a support group for next-of-kin, has said Malaysia's new government had given the families no information about what would happen next. Its spokeswoman, Grace Nathan, has urged Malaysia not to give up, saying the fact that the current search failed to find any clue meant there was more reason to reinvestigate and re-evaluate the case.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Soggy Alberto triggers mudslides, threatened dam is OK-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

MARION, N.C. — Mudslides triggered by the soggy remnants of Alberto forced evacuations below a dam early Wednesday and closed a highway in western North Carolina as the centre of the storm lashed the nation's midsection hundreds of miles away.About 2,000 people were evacuated for several hours after emergency managers said the Lake Tahoma dam was in danger of "imminent failure." Heavy rain triggered landslides at the dam and along Interstate 40, which was closed near Asheville.Engineers inspected the dam further in daylight and McDowell County officials announced in a public alert just after 10 a.m. Wednesday the dam was safe and people could return to their homes. The evacuation was ordered because engineers wanted to play it safe until they could do more inspections after sunrise, McDowell County Emergency Management deputy director Adrienne Jones told The Associated Press.Several schools were closed in western North Carolina because of flooding. The centre of a depression that had been Alberto was about 400 miles (640 kilometres ) west near Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where Sherry Key had a fitful night of sleep because of high winds and heavy rains."I have dogs and they're terribly afraid of storms, so they were on top on top me all night," said Key, an airport office manager.Radar showed rain extended as far south as the Gulf Coast, where the storm came ashore at the Florida Panhandle on Monday, to the Great Lakes region.Forecasters warned the leftovers of the Atlantic hurricane season's first named storm were still capable of causing treacherous flooding as heavy precipitation spreads deeper into the nation's midsection. Flash flood watches and warnings were in effect for parts of several states from Alabama through Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, the Carolinas and Virginia and West Virginia. The weather service at the Greenville-Spartanburg airport in South Carolina said the rainfall of 1.76 inches (4.4 centimetres ) on Tuesday broke a record dating to 1976.In the mountains of western North Carolina, Jones said about 200 residents spent the night in three shelters, set up in Marion, Old Fort and Glenwood. She said five minor injuries have been reported during water rescues as creeks and streams overflowed their banks and rock slides closed roads. The big, messy storm caused more than 25,000 power outages in Alabama, many of which were caused by trees rooted in soggy soil falling across utility lines."We've had a lot of rain, but we got lucky. It was a constant rain but not a heavy rain," said Regina Myers, emergency management director in Walker County northwest of Birmingham.Alberto was more of a rainstorm than a wind threat, but the National Weather Service said at least one tornado had been confirmed. The weather service said its meteorologists confirmed a weak tornado with maximum winds of 85 mph (147 kph) hit an area around Cameron, South Carolina, on Monday afternoon. No one was hurt. The Associated Press.

U.S. voices outrage as Syria assumes presidency of U.N. disarmament body-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department voiced outrage on Tuesday over the Syrian government's assumption of the presidency of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament for the next month, saying Damascus lacked credibility to preside over the body because of its use of chemical weapons."We are outraged at the Syrian regime's blatant disregard for human life, its serial violations of and contempt for its international obligations and its audaciousness in assuming the presidency of an international body committed to advancing disarmament and non-proliferation," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told a briefing. Pakistan, India agree to stop trading fire in Kashmir-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and India have agreed to stop trading fire, including artillery and small weapons, along the highly militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir and uphold a cease-fire accord dating back 15 years. After months of routine skirmishes that have killed dozens of soldiers and civilians on both sides, the situation was calm on Wednesday.Pakistan's military said late Tuesday that local generals reached the understanding using a special hotline set up to defuse tensions in Kashmir, which is split between Indian and Pakistani zones of control. Both nuclear-armed powers claim Kashmir in its entirety, and the territorial dispute has ignited two wars between Pakistan and India since they gained independence in 1947.Both sides "agreed to undertake sincere measures to improve the existing situation, ensuring peace and avoidance of hardships to the civilians along the borders," the Pakistani military said in a statement. It said that if future violence occurs in the disputed region, "restraint will be exercised and the matter will be resolved through utilization of existing mechanisms of hotline contacts and border flag meetings at local commander's level."The Indian army confirmed the agreement, saying both sides had pledged to "undertake sincere measures to improve the existing situation to ensure peace and avoidance of hardships to the civilians along the borders."The two sides also agreed to fully implement a 2003 cease-fire that has been repeatedly violated.Tensions have soared in recent weeks, as both sides have shelled border posts and villages and used automatic fire along the highly militarized frontier. Each side has accused the other of starting the hostilities in violation of the 2003 accord. This year, the situation worsened as the rivals also fired artillery shells at each other's positions. The soldiers from the two sides have engaged in fierce border skirmishes along the rugged and mountainous Line of Control which divides Kashmir territory between the two nations, as well as a lower-altitude 200-kilometre (125-mile) boundary separating Indian-controlled Kashmir and the Pakistani province of Punjab, where most of the latest fighting occurred. On the Indian side, the fighting has driven people from villages along the border, and government buildings have been converted into temporary shelters. Houses have been damaged, and dozens of schools in villages along the frontier have been closed, with authorities advising residents to stay indoors. The shelling has cast a pall over the holy month of Ramadan in the mostly Muslim region. The shelling typically flares up in the pre-dawn hours, when families are having a meal known as "suhoor" ahead of the daytime fast.India says 25 civilians and 18 soldiers have been killed this year in over 800 cease-fire violations initiated by Pakistan.Pakistan accuses Indian forces of more than 1,050 cease-fire violations this year, resulting in the deaths of 28 civilians and injuries to 117 others.Senior officials at the foreign ministry in Islamabad said Wednesday that Pakistan sees peace talks and negotiations as the only way to resolve all issues between the two sides. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to talk to reporters, insisted that Pakistani troops never deliberately target civilians on the Indian side but only respond to Indian fire in Kashmir.Sheikh Abdul Qayoom, an analyst based in Srinagar, on the Indian side, said the latest cease-fire is unlikely to hold unless the two countries come to a broader agreement on Kashmir, something that has eluded them for decades."India and Pakistan have always agreed to cease fire after a cycle of violence, but that in itself has been a sporadic thing, it has been an episodic peace between these two countries, then they return back to violence," he said.Residents on both side of the Line of Control nevertheless welcomed the announcement and expressed hope the peace would hold."This is exactly what people on both sides want, peace is the desire of all people," said Tariq Mir, a businessman living on the Pakistani side.Sharafat Hussain, a lawyer in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, said both sides should adhere to the cease-fire. "They should look to resolving problems through dialogue, as gunfire is not the solution."Sahil Nazir, a resident of Srinagar, said the latest cease-fire was a "good announcement" that must be implemented on the ground. "Guns should be silenced on both sides and borders should stay calm."___Hussain reported from Srinagar, India. U.N. sees signs of Mexican official involvement in wave of disappearances-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 30, 2018

GENEVA (Reuters) - The U.N. human rights office has "strong indications" that Mexican federal security forces are behind a wave of disappearances in and around the city of Nuevo Laredo, a statement from the U.N. human rights chief said on Wednesday.Mexican officials did not immediately respond to the UN allegations. The U.N. has documented the disappearance of 21 men and two women in Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas State from February until May 16 this year, the statement from U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said.A local human rights organization put the number of disappearances at more than 40, and the U.N. human rights office received testimonies that they were allegedly perpetrated by a federal security force, often late at night or at dawn, the statement said."Many of these people are reported to have been arbitrarily detained and disappeared while going about their daily lives," the statement quoted Zeid as saying."It is particularly horrific that at least five of the victims are minors, with three of them as young as 14. These crimes, perpetrated over four months in a single municipality, are outrageous," he said.Zeid has called on Mexican authorities to end the disappearances "amid strong indications that these crimes have been committed by federal security forces", the statement said. The authorities had ample information and evidence but had made little progress in investigating. Relatives of those missing had so far found the bodies of at least six victims, the statement said.Mexico's National Human Rights Commission asked the Navy and others to protect the population of Tamaulipas, but at least three disappearances had happened since then.Zeid said the events were a litmus test of whether Mexico's new General Law on Disappearances represented real change or a continued failure of justice."States have the obligation to guarantee the security of the population," he said."In the case of enforced disappearance and extrajudicial executions carried out by public officials, it is even more urgent for the state to act to demonstrate that it neither condones nor tolerates the commission of such grave violations.”(Reporting by Tom Miles; Additional reporting by Lizbeth Diaz in Mexico City; Editing by Matthew Mpoke Bigg)

Three soldiers hurt as south buffeted by Gazan fusillades-Netanyahu meets with security brass amid soaring tensions; IDF says Hamas has lost control in Strip; Palestinians claim over 110 rockets and shells fired at Israel-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded by shrapnel Tuesday during afternoon barrages of mortar shells and rockets launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip, in the worst flareup of cross-border violence since the 2014 Gaza war.Earlier in the day a civilian was lightly wounded by shrapnel from projectile fire, bringing the total number of injured to four.Tuesday saw at least 60 rockets and mortar shells launched into Israel from Gaza, as well as dozens of retaliatory strikes by the IDF against terror targets in the Strip, capping weeks of soaring tensions in the region stemming from weekly protests on the border. In an early morning mortar shell barrage, one shell exploded in the yard of a kindergarten shortly before children arrived.Officials said they expected the round of fighting to continue into the night at least, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with top defense brass. The three soldiers were hit by shrapnel from projectile attacks, apparently in separate incidents. One of the wounded was in moderate condition with injuries to his extremities, while the two others suffered light injuries only and were later released, authorities said. The three were flown by helicopter from Kibbutz Sufa near the Gaza border to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center. Two more people were lightly injured in Sderot Tuesday afternoon while running to shelters as rocket sirens blared.Medics from the United Hatzalah rescue service said they treated at least 10 people in communities of the Gaza periphery for anxiety.Police and the army called on the public in the Gaza periphery to remain near shelters and safe rooms. They warned civilians to stay away from rocket and mortar impact sites and to call authorities to deal with the ordnance.Netanyahu was meeting Tuesday evening with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, and the head of the Shin Bet security agency Nadav Argaman to discuss the escalation in the south.Meanwhile Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio the cross-border violence could potentially intensify towards the evening. He said Israel was closer to war than it had been since 2014, when the country fought a punishing 50 day war with Gaza-led fighters that the enclave has yet to recover from.“We don’t want war and neither do they, but we have our red lines,” Katz said.Rocket sirens continued to blare into Tuesday evening, capping a day that saw several volleys of mortars and missiles shot at communities surrounding the Strip starting Tuesday morning.Israeli media reported some 60 projectiles had been fired at Israel and a Palestinian website put the number at over 110. There was no official number from military officials. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. In response to the initial barrages, Israeli planes pounded the Strip Tuesday afternoon. The army said it had struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets, and terror headquarters, the IDF said. Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. There were no reports of casualties in the Israeli strikes. The army also said it struck a Hamas terror tunnel in the Gaza Strip which extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there 900 meters into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. The initial morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells was claimed by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, and came in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.No claims of responsibility were made for later volleys. Hebrew media reports said Hamas was responsible for some of them.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its attacks as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave. However, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said Hamas had “lost control” in Gaza, after weeks of attempts to foment violence at the border. After it “failed” to achieve results through weeks of riots along the border fence, Manelis told Hadashot TV news, Hamas had turned in recent weeks to shooting attacks and bomb attacks at the border.“And today it allowed Iran-backed [Islamic] Jihad to fire a terrible barrage at the Israeli communities in the Gaza periphery,” he said.A Hamas spokesperson earlier declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.”“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people,” he said.Netanyahu had vowed earlier to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Eisenkot later toured the border area and visited projectile impact sites, including the kindergarten. Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Perhaps learning a lesson from a flat-footed effort to defend itself in the media during deadly protests along the Gaza border earlier in the month, the Foreign Ministry launched a quick public diplomacy push, instructing ambassadors around the world to stress to local leaders and media that Israel was acting legitimately to defend itself from Gaza-based terrorism.Ambassadors were also to relay Israeli expectations that attacks from Gaza would receive unequivocal condemnations.Several foreign officials issued condemnations of Hamas and called for calm.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding harshly to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. The source added that Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.Tensions along the Gaza border have soared in recent weeks amidst violent border protests led by Hamas.Since March 30, tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in weekly protests which Israel says are used by the terror group as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence.Protesters have attacked soldiers at the border with bombs, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, burning tires and repeatedly attempting to sabotage and breach the security fence and infiltrate Israel. They have also launched hundreds of “attack” kites carrying flaming materials over the border to spark blazes in Israeli territory. The demonstrations came to a head on May 14 when the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem and at least 60 Palestinians were killed in clashes — almost all of them Hamas members, the terror group has acknowledged. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Israel intercepts protest boat trying to break Gaza blockade-Navy detains 17, tows vessel to Ashdod; Israeli medics offer treatment to Palestinians on board said injured in recent clashes; smaller boats remain within permitted fishing zone-By AFP and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli navy stopped and seized control of a boat carrying demonstrators as it tried to leave the Gaza fishing zone on Tuesday in defiance of Israel’s blockade of the coastal enclave.“The IDF seized a Palestinian boat carrying some 17 sailors who broke the sea blockade,” the navy said. “The seizure was carried out without incident.”The navy said after it had been searched, the boat would be towed to port in the Israeli city of Ashdod.Organizers had said the vessel was carrying wounded Gazans seeking treatment, and the IDF said medics were waiting to treat the sick or injured on board if necessary.“Afterwards the Palestinians will be returned to Gaza,” the army said. The boat was initially accompanied by a group of smaller vessels as it departed from the fishermen’s port in Gaza City.“Israeli forces surrounded it and intercepted it,” Salah Abdul Atti, one of the organizers, told AFP.Communications had been lost with the boat for more than 30 minutes, he added.Israel maintains a security blockade on Gaza to prevent Hamas, the Islamist terror group which rules the Strip and seeks to destroy Israel, from importing weaponry.Gazan fisherman are permitted by Israel to sail 16 kilometers (10 miles) off the coast.A Gaza advocacy website said that only one vessel, a fishing boat called Al-Hurriyah (Liberty), would attempt to sail from Gaza to an undisclosed destination. The vessel was said to carry Palestinians who were either injured and seeking treatment or wanted to study abroad.“Protest organizers have warned potential passengers it is likely the Al-Hurriyah will be attacked by the Israeli navy and they could be arrested as well. Still, [wheelchair bound Abdul Menim] Aabed and others are lining up to register for this first attempted voyage or for others that will follow,” the website said. The attempt to break the blockade was timed to mark eight years since the Mavi Marmara, a boat owned by a Turkish group, sought to break the blockade and was boarded by Israeli troops. Nine Turkish citizens were killed in the ensuing melee between IDF soldiers and armed protesters. The boarding of the Al-Hurriyah took place as several barrages of rockets and dozens of mortar shells were being fired from Gaza into Israel, and the IDF struck targets in the Gaza Strip in retaliation.Tuesday’s “reverse flotilla” was slammed by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Jason Greenblatt. In a series of early morning tweets, Greenblatt condemned Hamas, which has ruled the Strip since 2007, for what he termed “deadly theatrics” that needlessly imperil the lives of innocent civilians.“Shame on all involved in inciting the so called ‘reverse flotilla’ today. Hamas treats this like a play being acted out for a live media audience. But these are real lives Hamas is cynically risking in a grim bid to hold on to power,” Greenblatt wrote.Shame on all involved in inciting the so called “reverse flotilla” today. Israel destroys ‘unique’ Hamas tunnel extending into Israel via Egypt-Army strikes in Gaza seal off tunnel -- intended for both smuggling and attacks according to IDF -- that reached 900 meters into Israel-By TOI staff    -MAY 29,18

The Israeli army on Tuesday afternoon struck what it said was a Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip that extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The IDF said the U-shaped attack tunnel destroyed near Rafah and the Kerem Shalom border crossing was still under construction and not yet usable. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. Its full length was around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), the army said, and the segment inside Israeli territory was 900 meters (half a mile) long. The military discovered the tunnel in the past two weeks, an army spokesperson said. The army called the tunnel’s design “unique.”“This is a very long tunnel,” a source told the Ynet news site. “It also had exit shafts on the Egyptian side. The tunnel was dealt with using airstrikes [in Gaza], and in the coming hours will also be taken care of on our side to neutralize it entirely.”Israeli officials reportedly informed Egyptian counterparts of the planned strike on the tunnel, according to Hebrew-language media. It was not clear if Israeli strikes on the tunnel included action over the border in Egypt. The destruction of the tunnels came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza in response to a morning barrage of mortar fire, including one shell that landed in a kindergarten playground shortly before children were due to arrive. The IDF said it struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day, belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets and terror headquarters, the IDF said.Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. Some 28 mortar shells and rockets were fired into Israel by Palestinian terror groups Tuesday morning, and media reported dozens more in the afternoon following the strikes.Three Israeli soldiers were lightly injured from shrapnel in the afternoon attacks. The military said a total of 25 projectiles had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. The morning attacks were mounted by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, apparently in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its assault as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”The Israeli military, however, ultimately blamed the barrages on the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, saying the barrages were the result of the organization’s “failures” to successfully attack Israel during the recent riots along the border. There was no claim of responsibility for the afternoon barrage. As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the Zikim beach near Gaza, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Fresh barrage of missiles fired from Gaza; several intercepted-At least six new rounds of warning sirens go off in communities near border; two rockets said to land near Kibbutz Re'im-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Projectiles were fired from Gaza into southern Israel Tuesday afternoon in a fresh salvo of cross-border fire amid the most intense fighting seen in the region in years. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the afternoon barrage.Sirens blared in Israeli communities in the border region at least six times starting around 3 p.m., sending residents fleeing for shelter hours after having been given the all-clear following a morning volley.Sirens were reported as far away as the Ashkelon industrial zone and Ofakim, dozens of kilometers from the Strip, indicating the projectiles being fired were longer range than the mortar rounds shot earlier in the day. There was no immediate word on how many rockets or mortar rounds were fired. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. At least two projectiles in the afternoon barrage landed near Kibbutz Re’im, according to emergency response officials. There were no reports of injuries. One man was lightly injured by shrapnel in the morning. The fire came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza, hitting more than 30 terrorist positions in the Strip in response to the morning’s mortar fire, with one of the targets being a smuggling tunnel in Rafah. The army said the tunnel that was destroyed near Rafah extended from Egypt through Gaza to Israel. It was still being built and was not yet usable. Earlier, the Hamas terror group identified one of the targets as its training facility.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the nearby Zikim beach, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours. The afternoon’s incoming projectiles were more long range than the more than two dozen mortar shells launched from Gaza which hit southern Israel in the morning, triggering rocket alarms in the Lachish region dozens of kilometers from Gaza. There was no claim of responsibility for the fresh barrage. The morning volley was claimed by Islamic Jihad as revenge for an Israeli shelling that killed three members of the terror group earlier this week amid already high tensions along the border.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. He said both Hamas and Islamic Jihad would be held responsible.A Hamas spokesperson commented that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Behind Islamic Jihad’s barrage of attacks on Israel, the hand of Iran-It is hard to believe that the Gaza terror group would have opened fire on Israeli citizens, potentially pushing the Strip toward war, without the support of its Iranian sponsors-By Avi Issacharoff-MAY 29,18

Tuesday morning’s barrages of mortar shells and rockets into southern Israel were quickly rumored in Gaza to be the work of the Islamic Jihad terror group. And hours after more than two dozen mortar shells hit Israel, the IDF carried out retaliatory strikes that were mainly directed at Islamic Jihad’s military wing.Islamic Jihad’s role indicates we are witnessing an attempt by Iran to spark a war on the southern border. And if the deterioration of the situation is not halted in the very near future, the attempt may prove successful. Already we have seen an attack on Israeli targets unprecedented since 2014’s Protective Edge conflict, with a consequent Israeli response against targets in Gaza. The Islamic Jihad barrages were ostensibly aimed at avenging Israel’s reported killing of three of its operatives, who were attempting an attack, earlier this week in the Rafah area. That was the immediate pretext. But the nature and scale of the Islamic Jihad response — heavy fire at civilian targets in Israel — indicates that revenge was not the only motivation. It is possible that this is at root an Iranian move, seeking to have Israel pay a price in the south for targeting Iran in the north — across the border in Syria. After all, it is hard to believe that Islamic Jihad, a smaller ally-rival of Hamas which is financed and trained primarily by the Iranians, would have initiated this kind of action, with its dramatic consequences for Gaza, without Tehran’s approval.Israel has been making clear of late that it operates freely in Syria against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps there; it may well be that there are those in Tehran who want to counter that via the Gaza Strip, or at least to stir up Israel’s southern border and therefore distract Israel’s attention from the north.Where does Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza, fit into this? Hamas was quick to welcome the barrages fired at Israel. And the IDF has also targeted several Hamas facilities. Yet the fact remains that Hamas’s activities in recent months indicate that it is not particularly interested in an escalation, and Israel recognizes this.Hamas has put the brakes on a potential deterioration into all-out conflict more than once of late, even after its forces were hit. The most obvious recent example of this was on May 14, the day the US inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, Nakba Day, when more than 60 Gazans were killed in violent clashes with Israel at the Gaza border. Hamas later acknowledged that almost all of the fatalities were its members. Yet it ordered the dispersal of the protests at the border that evening, to avoid a potential descent into war.Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismael Haniyeh have been engaged in various secretive contacts of late — intermittently involving Egypt and, separately Qatar — intended to yield understandings for a long-term Hamas-Israel ceasefire. Evidently, however, there are other players — Islamic Jihad and Iran — who want to heat things up.Islamic Jihad’s attacks on Israel are also embarrassing Hamas in the eyes of the Gaza public. Hamas knows that if its forces do not prevent a continuation of Islamic Jihad fire — whether through the use of force, or threats, or both — there is a considerable likelihood that Gaza will once again find itself at war with Israel. But if Hamas does intervene against Islamic Jihad, its image as the “resistance” against Israel will be undermined. It would risk becoming perceived as another kind of “Palestinian Authority,” collaborating with the Zionist enemy in return for quiet and/or economic benefit.

Israeli planes strike dozens of Gaza targets after mortar barrage-Israel says tunnel hit along with 'terror targets'; Hamas reports training facility bombarded; Palestinian official reportedly says terror groups won't retaliate if nobody killed-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli military struck targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday in response to an early morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells from Gaza at communities in southern Israel, with the Hamas terror group identifying one of the targets as its training facility. The military said 35 targets were struck by warplanes operating over the Strip.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military struck a tunnel as well as “terror targets” in a “massive and strong” retaliatory attack.“Hamas and Islamic Jihad are paying the price and we’ve only starting settling accounts,” he said in a tweet. The strikes came shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. The military said the tunnel that was struck extended from Rafah in Egypt through Gaza and into Israel. They described it as a “unique” attack tunnel.A Hamas spokesperson declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. Health officials 'cautiously optimistic' on Ebola response-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

GENEVA — The World Health Organization said Tuesday it is "cautiously optimistic" about efforts to curb the spread of Ebola in an urban area in Congo, although the lethal virus is still reported in at least two remote areas. There have been 35 confirmed cases, including 12 deaths. The U.N. health agency and partners have vaccinated more than 400 people with an experimental Ebola vaccine, the first time it has been used in an emerging outbreak.WHO emergencies chief Peter Salama told reporters that the response has gone "quite smoothly" and that the agency's first priority had been to stop Ebola's spread in Mbandaka, a city of more than 1 million that sits on a river described as a "highway" connecting it to other regions."We can't conclude we have safeguarded the city of Mbandaka, but so far there hasn't been an explosive increase in cases ... We have reason to be cautiously optimistic," Salama said.He added that the next stage of the vaccination strategy would focus on the remote regions of Iboko and Bikoro, where most of the cases have been reported.Salama also said officials were planning to test five unlicensed drugs for Ebola, pending Congo's approval. Two of the drugs were previously used in past Ebola outbreaks, but the three remaining medicines have mostly been tested in animals. Salama said using the drugs in Congo's basic health clinics would be challenging since some involve intravenous infusions and require daily monitoring of kidney and liver functions.Bikoro has had no electricity and no functioning lab, officials said, and outbreak response efforts in Iboko have required the establishment of helicopter landing sites and electricity.Salama said WHO has been focused on three separate chains of Ebola transmission connected to a funeral, a church gathering and a visit to a health centre in Bikoro. He said officials were trying to monitor about 900 contacts of Ebola cases but couldn't say how many of the newly reported cases are coming from previously identified contacts.Having new cases arise from people not already under observation suggests the virus could be spreading unchecked in certain areas."This is a work in progress," Salama said, adding that the "overwhelming majority" of contacts were being followed up on a daily basis and that vaccination was providing further reassurance the epidemic might soon be controlled.___This version corrects to say only 12 deaths have been confirmed as Ebola. The Associated Press.

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24
22  The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Vertical plume of ash explodes from Hawaii volcano-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

HONOLULU (Reuters) - A small explosion of ash erupted from the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano early on Tuesday morning in a vertical plume some 15,000 feet (4,600 meters) high, the U.S. Geological Survey said, the latest outburst in a month of volcanic activity. The agency warned that ash was drifting northwest and liable to dust anyone in the summit area. Hundreds of people have been ordered to leave the vicinity of the biggest eruption cycle in a century of one of the world's most active volcanoes.Multiple fissures continue to spew up hot lava flows, which have blocked roads and damaged dozens of buildings on Hawaii's Big Island. [nL2N1SX09Z]-One fountain of lava rose more than 200 feet (60 meters) at times on Monday, the Geological Survey said.Officials are on high alert for occasional earthquakes, though none have been big enough so far to trigger a tsunami.Lava has engulfed the heads of two wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth's core at the 38-megawatt Puna Geothermal Venture. Its operator, Israeli-controlled Ormat Technologies Inc, said it had not been able to assess the damage. [nL2N1SX0DV]-So far no deaths have been blamed on the eruption, though a man's leg was shattered when he was hit by a spatter of super-dense lava. [nL2N1SR00X] Residents fear the wells may be explosive. Officials have said the power plant is safe but lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world, creating a measure of uncertainty.Contingency plans have been made for a possible helicopter evacuation of up to 1,000 residents in a coastal area south of the fissures should their last exit route, be blocked by lava or become unsafe due to gaping cracks, County of Hawaii officials said. [nL2N1SW08J]-At least 82 homes have been destroyed in the southeastern corner of Big Island and about 2,000 people have been ordered evacuated since Kilauea began erupting on May 3.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa; writing and additional reporting by Jonathan Allen; Editing by Scott Malone and Jonathan Oatis)

Flooded residents in Maryland wonder about rebuilding-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-David Mcfadden,-May 29, 2018

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- After yet another devastating flash flood ripped apart their historic Maryland mill town, hundreds of residents and business owners are again asking themselves: Should I stay or should I go? Some people in picturesque Ellicott City — established in 1772 as a Patapsco River mill town surrounded by hills — say they're determined to rebuild after Sunday's devastation. Their hope: to pull together as a community again after the second terrible flood deluged their downtown in less than two years.Simon Cortes, owner of La Palapa Grill & Cantina, said Monday it's "a horrible time," and his business took on about a foot (30 centimeters) of water. But he says the town has been through it all before, and he'll do his part to spur another revival."I feel like it's our duty to make sure that we rebuild and open back up," said Cortes, whose restaurant is right by the spot where a 39-year-old man was swept away by Sunday's raging floodwaters.Others are stretched to the breaking point by the floods, which tore up streets and swept away dozens of cars in the quaint downtown of historic 18th and 19th century buildings, which sit in a ravine about 13 miles (20 kilometers) west of Baltimore. Now the locals face yet another massive cleanup, serious economic losses and a daunting comeback.Sunday's torrential rains came just as the town seemed to come back stronger than ever from a dreadful July 2016 flash flood that killed two people.Getting flood insurance around old Ellicott City was a pricy proposition before. Now, people don't even want to think about how much it might cost, on top of the debts they're still paying from the last time their homes and businesses were destroyed.Nathan Sowers, owner of the River House Pizza Co., an outdoor eatery in the old mill town's business district, said that after all the hard work rebuilding from the 2016 flood, he's feeling a bit overwhelmed at attempting yet another comeback."We'll see. It takes a lot of money and a lot of time, a lot of energy. We'll just have to assess it," he said, speaking near a bridge where several crushed cars were swept into a muddy tributary's banks. But Sowers said he saw other hard-hit locals laughing and joking about their troubles first thing Monday morning — a good sign the Maryland town will launch yet another rebirth. But the bad news just kept coming following the torrential rains: On Tuesday morning, county authorities issued what they called a "precautionary health alert" after a sewage main broke about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away from Ellicott City's historic main street. The sewage overflow, which was first noticed early Monday, has been stopped. But as much as 500,000 gallons of sewage had already spilled and residents were being told to stay away from the affected area.People were also heartbroken that 39-year-old Eddison Hermond of Severn, Maryland remains missing. He was last seen trying to help a woman rescue her cat behind a restaurant while seething brown waters surged through the downtown.Howard County Police Chief Gary Gardner said the National Guard member and U.S. Air Force veteran had been with a group at the La Palapa Grill & Cantina when a woman approached, desperately trying to rescue her pet just outside."He, along with some other folks, went back to assist her and unfortunately during that effort they saw him go under water," Gardner told reporters.Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman said his immediate priorities are finding Hermond and assessing the condition of damaged buildings that housed shops, restaurants and families."If you look at the devastation and the damage, I would certainly say it's worse than 2016," Kittleman said. "We've had areas that were not even damaged at all two years ago terribly damaged this time."Ellicott City certainly got the worst of it. But torrential rains led to such bad flooding in Baltimore County, Baltimore City and the capital of Annapolis that Gov. Larry Hogan declared a statewide emergency to better coordinate support and assistance.Mike Muccilli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said it was too early to make comparisons between the two devastating floods. In the July 2016 storm, Ellicott City received 6.6 inches (17 centimeters) of rain over a two- to three-hour period. On Sunday, the community received some 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of rain over a six-hour period, most of it in an intense, three-hour period, Muccilli said."In a normal heavy rain ... you wouldn't see this amount of flooding, where you see cars floating down the road," the meteorologist said. "This was a true flash flood."___Associated Press writer Brian Witte in Annapolis, Maryland, contributed to this report.___Follow McFadden on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dmcfadd

Cyber crooks claim to hit two big Canadian banks-[Reuters]-By Matt Scuffham-TOI-YAHOONEWS-May 28, 2018

TORONTO (Reuters) - Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce said on Monday that cyber attackers may have stolen the data of nearly 90,000 customers in what appeared to be the first significant assault on financial institutions in the country.Bank of Montreal , Canada's fourth biggest lender, said on Monday it was contacted by fraudsters on Sunday who claimed they were in possession of the personal and financial information of a limited number of the bank's customers.A spokesman for the bank said it believed that less than 50,000 of the bank's 8 million customers across Canada were hacked. He declined to say if any customers lost money as a result of the attack. The fraudsters had threatened to make the data public, the spokesman said, adding that the bank was working with the authorities and conducting a thorough investigation.Bank of Montreal said it believed the attack originated from outside the country and was confident the exposures that led to the theft of customer data had been closed off.Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce , Canada's fifth biggest lender, said fraudsters contacted the lender on Sunday claiming they had electronically stolen personal and account information of 40,000 customers of its Simplii direct banking brand.CIBC said it has not yet confirmed the cyber breach but is taking the claim seriously. CIBC said customers at its main banking division were not affected. Both banks said they were contacting customers and advising them to monitor their accounts and report any suspicious activity.Other Canadian banks said they had not been affected.Shares in BMO were down 0.3 percent and CIBC was off 0.3 percent.Canada's six biggest banks have been collaborating along with the Bank of Canada to enhance their defenses against cyber attacks. The Bank of Canada said earlier this month that some attacks would inevitably succeed but it has recovery mechanisms in place to limit the damage.Cyber attacks are increasingly common. Last year, credit monitoring firm Equifax said information on about 146.6 million names, 146.6 million dates of birth, 145.5 million U.S. social security numbers, 99 million addresses and 209,000 payment card numbers and expiration dates, were stolen in a cyber attack.(Reporting by Matt Scuffham; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)

Four years on, MH370 families await report as search ends for missing plane-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Rozanna Latiff-May 29, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's new government has promised to release a long-awaited report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 as a privately funded underwater search ended on Tuesday.Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, vanished enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, becoming one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. The government of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said last week that U.S. seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity, which had scoured the southern Indian Ocean for the aircraft since January, would end its hunt on Tuesday. The previous administration of Najib Razak, who was defeated in a stunning election upset on May 9, had promised up to $70 million to the Texas-based firm if it found the plane within 90 days.Malaysia's transport minister, Anthony Loke, said a full report into MH370's disappearance would be published in the near future, but he did not give a date."I can assure you the final report will be published with full disclosure. There will not be any edits, or anything hidden," he told reporters late on Monday.Asked whether the report would refer to controversial elements of the MH370 case, he said: "To me, whatever elements, we will just publish it".Last year, Australian authorities said the MH370 captain had flown a route on his home simulator six weeks before the disappearance that was "initially similar" to the course actually taken by the aircraft.Peter Foley, who led the Australian Transport Safety Bureau's search efforts, told an Australian Senate hearing "control inputs" had been made to fly the airliner off course, but he could not say if one of the pilots had done so.Malaysian investigators said in 2015 they had found nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of the pilots or crew.FAMILIES CALL FOR REVIEW-The decision to engage Ocean Infinity came after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200-million ($159 million) search across a 120,000 square-kilometer (46,332 square mile) expanse of the Indian Ocean last year. This was despite investigators calling for the target area to be extended north by 25,000 square kilometers (9653 square miles).Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett said on Tuesday their team had searched more than 112,000 square kilometers (43,243 square miles) of ocean floor in a little over three months. While the outcome was "extremely disappointing", Plunkett hoped the company would be able to offer its services again in a future search for the airliner.Asked if China would consider further funding for the search, or whether search organizations had asked China for more resources, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had always maintained close communication with the relevant parties."We will continue to maintain communication with relevant parties," Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing in Beijing.Voice 370, a group representing the relatives of those aboard the flight, has pressed the new Malaysian government to review all matters related to MH370, including "any possible falsification or elimination of records related to MH370 and its maintenance".Calvin Shim, whose wife was a crew member on the plane, said he was concerned that the accident report would not include key information such as the plane's full cargo manifest and the results of a separate investigation by Malaysian police."We know that this issue is already four years old and a lot of people involved want closure," he said."These four years have not been fun to us, the families."Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the search had tested the limits of technology and capacity of experts and people at sea.It would only resume if there was "credible evidence which identifies a specific location of the missing aircraft"."We will always remain hopeful that one day the aircraft will be located," McCormack's office said in a statement. The only confirmed traces of the plane have been three wing fragments found washed up on Indian Ocean coasts.(Reporting by Rozanna Latiff; Additional reporting by Jamie Freed in SINGAPORE, Michael Martina in BEIJING and Colin Packham in SYDNEY; Editing by Darren Schuettler)

Gunman reportedly shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ kills three in Belgian city-Investigators look at possible terror motive after two police officers and a passerby shot dead in eastern city of Liege; attacker also killed-By Sue Surkes and AFP-TOI-MAY 29,18

A gunman in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday shot dead three people — two police officers and a passerby in a vehicle — before he was killed by elite officers.Prosecutors said the attacker killed the police officers with their own firearms. The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. near a high school on a major street in the city, which is around 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of Brussels, close to the German border. The French-language Belgian news site LaLibre reported that the man had shouted “Allahu akbar” before police shot him.The file has been passed to the federal prosecutor responsible for terrorism, one person at the Liege federal prosecutor’s office, spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt, said.“There are elements that go in the direction of a terrorist act,” he was quoted by the French language RTL news site as saying. But Catherine Collignon, another spokeswoman for the same office, told the AFP news agency that the attacker’s motive was not immediately clear. “We don’t know anything yet,” she said.Media reports said the gunman shot dead two police officers at a cafe before fleeing to the Lycee Waha school, where he took a cleaning lady hostage.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Center was monitoring the situation.???? We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter. The crisis center said a security cordon had been set up around the area and urged people to stay away.Belgium has been on high alert since the smashing of a terror cell in the town of Verviers in January 2015 that was planning an attack on police. The Verviers cell also had links to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the November 2015 Islamic State attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.Belgium further raised its terror alert level after the Paris attack, and placed the capital Brussels on lockdown for a week.Belgium was then hit by its own IS suicide attacks on Brussels airport and a metro station that killed 32 people. In March, Belgian police arrested eight people in Brussels in counter-terror raids as part of an investigation into what one source said appeared to be preparations for an attack.

Hezbollah men, including commander, said killed in Syria strike blamed on Israel-Attack reportedly wrecks operational coordination center near Al-Qusayr, close to where munitions depot belonging to group was destroyed in a raid on Thursday-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

A senior commander and other members of the Iranian-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group were killed overnight in an Israeli airstrike, Sky’s Arabic-language channel reported Tuesday. The strikes reportedly took place near the Syrian town of Al-Qusayr in the Homs district, close to the Lebanese border. There was no Israeli comment on the report. It cited sources saying the strikes destroyed a coordination center for operations and set fire to various places. On Thursday, airstrikes attributed to the IDF destroyed Hezbollah munitions depots at the al-Qusayr airbase, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.“Six missiles were fired at the Daba’a military airport and surrounding area in the western sector of Homs province, targeting Lebanese Hezbollah weapons warehouses,” Rami Abd el-Rahman, director of the Observatory, told AFP, adding, “The missiles would have been fired by Israel.”Daba’a is another name for the al-Qusayr airbase, and the surrounding area is known to be a stronghold for Hezbollah and Iran-backed militias. It was also reportedly struck by Israel in a raid during an exchange with Syrian and Iranian forces on May 10.The raid came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s al-Quds Force launched 32 rockets at Israel’s forward defensive line on the Golan Heights border.Israel and Iran have been waging a quiet war in Syria for several years.Israel maintains that it will take military action to stop Tehran from entrenching itself in Syria. On Monday, the Haaretz newspaper reported that Russia was considering trying to keep Iranian forces and their allies away from the border, fearing that repeated Israeli strikes could undermine Syrian President Bashar Assad’s grip on the country.According to the report, Russia decided to work on a deal to remove the Iranian troops following the heavy Israeli attack on Iranian targets in Syria on May 10.Israel has acknowledged carrying out several aerial raids on Iranian targets in Syria, and suspected of carrying out several more.Tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria have stepped up considerably in recent months, beginning in February when an Iranian drone carrying explosives was flown from the T-4 air base in central Syria into Israeli airspace and was shot down by an IAF helicopter.Israel conducted a series of reprisal raids, first against the air base and then against Syrian air defenses, which had fired on the Israeli jets and shot down one F-16.Much of the Iranian infrastructure is set up on Syrian bases and Israel has also frequently hit Syrian air defenses during strikes on Iranian targets.

One suspect in Mississauga, Ont., restaurant explosion may be female, police say-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — One of two suspects wanted in connection with an explosion that injured 15 people at a restaurant west of Toronto may be a woman, contrary to earlier reports, police said Tuesday.Investigators originally said both suspects seen on video entering the Bombay Bhel restaurant in Mississauga, Ont., last week were men, but new video evidence and witness input suggests at least one of the suspects could be female, said Peel regional police Supt. Rob Ryan.Police have finished processing the scene of the blast and are now analysing a collection of evidence that includes fingerprints, DNA, surveillance video, interviews with people present at the restaurant that night and remnants of the explosive device itself, Ryan said."Investigators spent hundreds of hours over the weekend combing the scene for every fine detail that might help them to understand what happened that night," he said."What led the two suspects to detonate this device is still not clear," he added. "We do not have clear motive and no one has claimed responsibility."The suspects were in and out of the restaurant in a short amount of time, and fled the scene on foot before their homemade explosive device detonated, police said.Investigators have traced the suspects' escape route with drones and dogs, and believe the pair headed eastward from Bombay Bhel, cutting through a construction site and then a residential subdivision, Ryan said.Police have said they think the suspects ultimately got into a vehicle.Ryan said assistance from the community would be "critical" to the investigation, and urged anyone with information to contact police, whether they witnessed any part of what happened the night of the bombing, or know something about the suspects."We know there are people out there who know who did this and it's time for them to do the right thing and come forward," Ryan said.Ryan said investigators still don't know the motive for the attack, but said the suspects would be charged with attempted murder, among other offences, if caught. The fifteen people injured in the explosion — three of them critically — have all since been treated and released from hospital, police said.Peter Goffin , The Canadian Press.

Syrian army ready for southern battle, pro-Assad commander says-[Reuters]-By Laila Bassam and Tom Perry-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has completed preparations for an imminent offensive against rebel-held areas in southwestern Syria, a non-Syrian commander in a military alliance that backs Damascus said on Tuesday, raising the prospect of a major new escalation. However, a rebel commander in the Deraa region of the southwest told Reuters there was no sign of mobilization for such an assault and accused Damascus of waging psychological warfare. Nevertheless, rebels had prepared defenses, he said. The rebel-held southwest has come into focus after the Syrian government, backed militarily by Iran and Russia, crushed the last besieged rebel enclaves near Damascus and north of the city of Homs. Damascus has vowed to recover the whole country. The southwest is of concern to the United States, which last year brokered a "de-escalation" deal with Jordan and President Bashar al-Assad's Russian allies, which has largely contained the war near the frontier with Israel. The United States warned on Saturday it would take "firm and appropriate measures" in response to any violations of the ceasefire in that area. While Assad is militarily unassailable in the Syrian conflict, swathes of territory at the frontiers with Iraq, Turkey and Jordan and Israel remain outside his control. The role of outside powers in these areas complicates further gains by Damascus. The pro-Assad commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Syrian army's preparations for the assault were complete. "The Syrian army will wage all the battles and has now become strong and capable," the commander said.Israel wants Iran-backed forces removed from areas near its frontier - and from Syria in general. Iran-backed Shi'ite militias, often spearheaded by Lebanon's Hezbollah, have played a critical role fighting in support of Assad.Russia said on Monday that only Syrian army troops should be at the southern border with Jordan and Israel. On Tuesday, its foreign ministry said Russia, the United States and Jordan had agreed to meet about the "de-escalation" zone, RIA news agency reported.-"PSYCHOLOGICAL WAR"-An article published in the pro-Damascus al-Watan newspaper said signs "on the horizon" indicated the southern battle was near as "final touches" were put in place. But the rebel commander, Colonel Nassim Abu Arra of the Youth of Sunna Forces, told Reuters there was no sign of an imminent attack."So far there are no indications of that. I am speaking from a position on the frontlines," he said in a telephone interview. "But there are rumors, a psychological war," he said.In the last week, he said several military convoys had left government-held parts of Deraa city heading north, saying he believed these to be Iran-backed forces being evacuated from the region. They had not been replaced, he added. His faction was keeping the United States and Jordan abreast of the situation on the ground. "We are taking from them reassurances that the southern region is subjected to the de-escalation agreement and ceasefire," he said. But his fighters had still prepared defenses. "I assure you the opposition forces have taken a number of measures ... including digging trenches and tunnels to prevent the regime from launching any attack," he said.(This version of the story corrects the name of rebel commander in paragraph 11)(Reporting by Laila Bassam and Tom Perry and Polina Ivanova in Moscow; Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Richard Balmforth, Larry King)

Japan navy spots suspected China ship next to NKorea tanker-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

TOKYO — Japan's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that a Japanese navy surveillance aircraft has spotted a suspected Chinese-flagged ship apparently transferring fuel to a North Korean tanker on the open seas.A ministry statement said that the two vessels were suspected of engaging in offshore ship-to-ship transfers banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions. It said Japan has informed the U.N. Security Council of the May 19 sighting of the North Korean-flagged tanker, Ji Song 6, moored alongside the ship carrying a flag believed to be Chinese in open seas in the East China Sea.Four photos taken by the Maritime Self- Defence Force were released, including two showing the ships alongside each other, connected by a hose. The U.N. has blacklisted the North Korean tanker. The disclosure of the alleged offshore transfer comes as preparations for an expected summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be in their final stages.U.N. sanctions on the North limit energy trade and ban offshore transfers of goods to North Korean ships as part of international efforts to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons.Japan and the U.S. have said the sanctions must be enforced strictly to be effective, and asked China in particular to tighten enforcement. The Associated Press.
