Three soldiers hurt as south buffeted by Gazan fusillades-Netanyahu meets with security brass amid soaring tensions; IDF says Hamas has lost control in Strip; Palestinians claim over 110 rockets and shells fired at Israel-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded by shrapnel Tuesday during afternoon barrages of mortar shells and rockets launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip, in the worst flareup of cross-border violence since the 2014 Gaza war.Earlier in the day a civilian was lightly wounded by shrapnel from projectile fire, bringing the total number of injured to four.Tuesday saw at least 60 rockets and mortar shells launched into Israel from Gaza, as well as dozens of retaliatory strikes by the IDF against terror targets in the Strip, capping weeks of soaring tensions in the region stemming from weekly protests on the border. In an early morning mortar shell barrage, one shell exploded in the yard of a kindergarten shortly before children arrived.Officials said they expected the round of fighting to continue into the night at least, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with top defense brass. The three soldiers were hit by shrapnel from projectile attacks, apparently in separate incidents. One of the wounded was in moderate condition with injuries to his extremities, while the two others suffered light injuries only and were later released, authorities said. The three were flown by helicopter from Kibbutz Sufa near the Gaza border to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center. Two more people were lightly injured in Sderot Tuesday afternoon while running to shelters as rocket sirens blared.Medics from the United Hatzalah rescue service said they treated at least 10 people in communities of the Gaza periphery for anxiety.Police and the army called on the public in the Gaza periphery to remain near shelters and safe rooms. They warned civilians to stay away from rocket and mortar impact sites and to call authorities to deal with the ordnance.Netanyahu was meeting Tuesday evening with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, and the head of the Shin Bet security agency Nadav Argaman to discuss the escalation in the south.Meanwhile Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio the cross-border violence could potentially intensify towards the evening. He said Israel was closer to war than it had been since 2014, when the country fought a punishing 50 day war with Gaza-led fighters that the enclave has yet to recover from.“We don’t want war and neither do they, but we have our red lines,” Katz said.Rocket sirens continued to blare into Tuesday evening, capping a day that saw several volleys of mortars and missiles shot at communities surrounding the Strip starting Tuesday morning.Israeli media reported some 60 projectiles had been fired at Israel and a Palestinian website put the number at over 110. There was no official number from military officials. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. In response to the initial barrages, Israeli planes pounded the Strip Tuesday afternoon. The army said it had struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets, and terror headquarters, the IDF said. Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. There were no reports of casualties in the Israeli strikes. The army also said it struck a Hamas terror tunnel in the Gaza Strip which extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there 900 meters into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. The initial morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells was claimed by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, and came in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.No claims of responsibility were made for later volleys. Hebrew media reports said Hamas was responsible for some of them.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its attacks as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave. However, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said Hamas had “lost control” in Gaza, after weeks of attempts to foment violence at the border. After it “failed” to achieve results through weeks of riots along the border fence, Manelis told Hadashot TV news, Hamas had turned in recent weeks to shooting attacks and bomb attacks at the border.“And today it allowed Iran-backed [Islamic] Jihad to fire a terrible barrage at the Israeli communities in the Gaza periphery,” he said.A Hamas spokesperson earlier declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.”“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people,” he said.Netanyahu had vowed earlier to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Eisenkot later toured the border area and visited projectile impact sites, including the kindergarten. Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Perhaps learning a lesson from a flat-footed effort to defend itself in the media during deadly protests along the Gaza border earlier in the month, the Foreign Ministry launched a quick public diplomacy push, instructing ambassadors around the world to stress to local leaders and media that Israel was acting legitimately to defend itself from Gaza-based terrorism.Ambassadors were also to relay Israeli expectations that attacks from Gaza would receive unequivocal condemnations.Several foreign officials issued condemnations of Hamas and called for calm.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding harshly to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. The source added that Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.Tensions along the Gaza border have soared in recent weeks amidst violent border protests led by Hamas.Since March 30, tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in weekly protests which Israel says are used by the terror group as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence.Protesters have attacked soldiers at the border with bombs, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, burning tires and repeatedly attempting to sabotage and breach the security fence and infiltrate Israel. They have also launched hundreds of “attack” kites carrying flaming materials over the border to spark blazes in Israeli territory. The demonstrations came to a head on May 14 when the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem and at least 60 Palestinians were killed in clashes — almost all of them Hamas members, the terror group has acknowledged. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Israel intercepts protest boat trying to break Gaza blockade-Navy detains 17, tows vessel to Ashdod; Israeli medics offer treatment to Palestinians on board said injured in recent clashes; smaller boats remain within permitted fishing zone-By AFP and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli navy stopped and seized control of a boat carrying demonstrators as it tried to leave the Gaza fishing zone on Tuesday in defiance of Israel’s blockade of the coastal enclave.“The IDF seized a Palestinian boat carrying some 17 sailors who broke the sea blockade,” the navy said. “The seizure was carried out without incident.”The navy said after it had been searched, the boat would be towed to port in the Israeli city of Ashdod.Organizers had said the vessel was carrying wounded Gazans seeking treatment, and the IDF said medics were waiting to treat the sick or injured on board if necessary.“Afterwards the Palestinians will be returned to Gaza,” the army said. The boat was initially accompanied by a group of smaller vessels as it departed from the fishermen’s port in Gaza City.“Israeli forces surrounded it and intercepted it,” Salah Abdul Atti, one of the organizers, told AFP.Communications had been lost with the boat for more than 30 minutes, he added.Israel maintains a security blockade on Gaza to prevent Hamas, the Islamist terror group which rules the Strip and seeks to destroy Israel, from importing weaponry.Gazan fisherman are permitted by Israel to sail 16 kilometers (10 miles) off the coast.A Gaza advocacy website said that only one vessel, a fishing boat called Al-Hurriyah (Liberty), would attempt to sail from Gaza to an undisclosed destination. The vessel was said to carry Palestinians who were either injured and seeking treatment or wanted to study abroad.“Protest organizers have warned potential passengers it is likely the Al-Hurriyah will be attacked by the Israeli navy and they could be arrested as well. Still, [wheelchair bound Abdul Menim] Aabed and others are lining up to register for this first attempted voyage or for others that will follow,” the website said. The attempt to break the blockade was timed to mark eight years since the Mavi Marmara, a boat owned by a Turkish group, sought to break the blockade and was boarded by Israeli troops. Nine Turkish citizens were killed in the ensuing melee between IDF soldiers and armed protesters. The boarding of the Al-Hurriyah took place as several barrages of rockets and dozens of mortar shells were being fired from Gaza into Israel, and the IDF struck targets in the Gaza Strip in retaliation.Tuesday’s “reverse flotilla” was slammed by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Jason Greenblatt. In a series of early morning tweets, Greenblatt condemned Hamas, which has ruled the Strip since 2007, for what he termed “deadly theatrics” that needlessly imperil the lives of innocent civilians.“Shame on all involved in inciting the so called ‘reverse flotilla’ today. Hamas treats this like a play being acted out for a live media audience. But these are real lives Hamas is cynically risking in a grim bid to hold on to power,” Greenblatt wrote.Shame on all involved in inciting the so called “reverse flotilla” today. Israel destroys ‘unique’ Hamas tunnel extending into Israel via Egypt-Army strikes in Gaza seal off tunnel -- intended for both smuggling and attacks according to IDF -- that reached 900 meters into Israel-By TOI staff    -MAY 29,18

The Israeli army on Tuesday afternoon struck what it said was a Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip that extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The IDF said the U-shaped attack tunnel destroyed near Rafah and the Kerem Shalom border crossing was still under construction and not yet usable. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. Its full length was around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), the army said, and the segment inside Israeli territory was 900 meters (half a mile) long. The military discovered the tunnel in the past two weeks, an army spokesperson said. The army called the tunnel’s design “unique.”“This is a very long tunnel,” a source told the Ynet news site. “It also had exit shafts on the Egyptian side. The tunnel was dealt with using airstrikes [in Gaza], and in the coming hours will also be taken care of on our side to neutralize it entirely.”Israeli officials reportedly informed Egyptian counterparts of the planned strike on the tunnel, according to Hebrew-language media. It was not clear if Israeli strikes on the tunnel included action over the border in Egypt. The destruction of the tunnels came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza in response to a morning barrage of mortar fire, including one shell that landed in a kindergarten playground shortly before children were due to arrive. The IDF said it struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day, belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets and terror headquarters, the IDF said.Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. Some 28 mortar shells and rockets were fired into Israel by Palestinian terror groups Tuesday morning, and media reported dozens more in the afternoon following the strikes.Three Israeli soldiers were lightly injured from shrapnel in the afternoon attacks. The military said a total of 25 projectiles had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. The morning attacks were mounted by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, apparently in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its assault as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”The Israeli military, however, ultimately blamed the barrages on the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, saying the barrages were the result of the organization’s “failures” to successfully attack Israel during the recent riots along the border. There was no claim of responsibility for the afternoon barrage. As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the Zikim beach near Gaza, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Fresh barrage of missiles fired from Gaza; several intercepted-At least six new rounds of warning sirens go off in communities near border; two rockets said to land near Kibbutz Re'im-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Projectiles were fired from Gaza into southern Israel Tuesday afternoon in a fresh salvo of cross-border fire amid the most intense fighting seen in the region in years. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the afternoon barrage.Sirens blared in Israeli communities in the border region at least six times starting around 3 p.m., sending residents fleeing for shelter hours after having been given the all-clear following a morning volley.Sirens were reported as far away as the Ashkelon industrial zone and Ofakim, dozens of kilometers from the Strip, indicating the projectiles being fired were longer range than the mortar rounds shot earlier in the day. There was no immediate word on how many rockets or mortar rounds were fired. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. At least two projectiles in the afternoon barrage landed near Kibbutz Re’im, according to emergency response officials. There were no reports of injuries. One man was lightly injured by shrapnel in the morning. The fire came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza, hitting more than 30 terrorist positions in the Strip in response to the morning’s mortar fire, with one of the targets being a smuggling tunnel in Rafah. The army said the tunnel that was destroyed near Rafah extended from Egypt through Gaza to Israel. It was still being built and was not yet usable. Earlier, the Hamas terror group identified one of the targets as its training facility.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the nearby Zikim beach, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours. The afternoon’s incoming projectiles were more long range than the more than two dozen mortar shells launched from Gaza which hit southern Israel in the morning, triggering rocket alarms in the Lachish region dozens of kilometers from Gaza. There was no claim of responsibility for the fresh barrage. The morning volley was claimed by Islamic Jihad as revenge for an Israeli shelling that killed three members of the terror group earlier this week amid already high tensions along the border.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. He said both Hamas and Islamic Jihad would be held responsible.A Hamas spokesperson commented that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Behind Islamic Jihad’s barrage of attacks on Israel, the hand of Iran-It is hard to believe that the Gaza terror group would have opened fire on Israeli citizens, potentially pushing the Strip toward war, without the support of its Iranian sponsors-By Avi Issacharoff-MAY 29,18

Tuesday morning’s barrages of mortar shells and rockets into southern Israel were quickly rumored in Gaza to be the work of the Islamic Jihad terror group. And hours after more than two dozen mortar shells hit Israel, the IDF carried out retaliatory strikes that were mainly directed at Islamic Jihad’s military wing.Islamic Jihad’s role indicates we are witnessing an attempt by Iran to spark a war on the southern border. And if the deterioration of the situation is not halted in the very near future, the attempt may prove successful. Already we have seen an attack on Israeli targets unprecedented since 2014’s Protective Edge conflict, with a consequent Israeli response against targets in Gaza. The Islamic Jihad barrages were ostensibly aimed at avenging Israel’s reported killing of three of its operatives, who were attempting an attack, earlier this week in the Rafah area. That was the immediate pretext. But the nature and scale of the Islamic Jihad response — heavy fire at civilian targets in Israel — indicates that revenge was not the only motivation. It is possible that this is at root an Iranian move, seeking to have Israel pay a price in the south for targeting Iran in the north — across the border in Syria. After all, it is hard to believe that Islamic Jihad, a smaller ally-rival of Hamas which is financed and trained primarily by the Iranians, would have initiated this kind of action, with its dramatic consequences for Gaza, without Tehran’s approval.Israel has been making clear of late that it operates freely in Syria against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps there; it may well be that there are those in Tehran who want to counter that via the Gaza Strip, or at least to stir up Israel’s southern border and therefore distract Israel’s attention from the north.Where does Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza, fit into this? Hamas was quick to welcome the barrages fired at Israel. And the IDF has also targeted several Hamas facilities. Yet the fact remains that Hamas’s activities in recent months indicate that it is not particularly interested in an escalation, and Israel recognizes this.Hamas has put the brakes on a potential deterioration into all-out conflict more than once of late, even after its forces were hit. The most obvious recent example of this was on May 14, the day the US inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, Nakba Day, when more than 60 Gazans were killed in violent clashes with Israel at the Gaza border. Hamas later acknowledged that almost all of the fatalities were its members. Yet it ordered the dispersal of the protests at the border that evening, to avoid a potential descent into war.Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismael Haniyeh have been engaged in various secretive contacts of late — intermittently involving Egypt and, separately Qatar — intended to yield understandings for a long-term Hamas-Israel ceasefire. Evidently, however, there are other players — Islamic Jihad and Iran — who want to heat things up.Islamic Jihad’s attacks on Israel are also embarrassing Hamas in the eyes of the Gaza public. Hamas knows that if its forces do not prevent a continuation of Islamic Jihad fire — whether through the use of force, or threats, or both — there is a considerable likelihood that Gaza will once again find itself at war with Israel. But if Hamas does intervene against Islamic Jihad, its image as the “resistance” against Israel will be undermined. It would risk becoming perceived as another kind of “Palestinian Authority,” collaborating with the Zionist enemy in return for quiet and/or economic benefit.

Israeli planes strike dozens of Gaza targets after mortar barrage-Israel says tunnel hit along with 'terror targets'; Hamas reports training facility bombarded; Palestinian official reportedly says terror groups won't retaliate if nobody killed-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli military struck targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday in response to an early morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells from Gaza at communities in southern Israel, with the Hamas terror group identifying one of the targets as its training facility. The military said 35 targets were struck by warplanes operating over the Strip.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military struck a tunnel as well as “terror targets” in a “massive and strong” retaliatory attack.“Hamas and Islamic Jihad are paying the price and we’ve only starting settling accounts,” he said in a tweet. The strikes came shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. The military said the tunnel that was struck extended from Rafah in Egypt through Gaza and into Israel. They described it as a “unique” attack tunnel.A Hamas spokesperson declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. Health officials 'cautiously optimistic' on Ebola response-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

GENEVA — The World Health Organization said Tuesday it is "cautiously optimistic" about efforts to curb the spread of Ebola in an urban area in Congo, although the lethal virus is still reported in at least two remote areas. There have been 35 confirmed cases, including 12 deaths. The U.N. health agency and partners have vaccinated more than 400 people with an experimental Ebola vaccine, the first time it has been used in an emerging outbreak.WHO emergencies chief Peter Salama told reporters that the response has gone "quite smoothly" and that the agency's first priority had been to stop Ebola's spread in Mbandaka, a city of more than 1 million that sits on a river described as a "highway" connecting it to other regions."We can't conclude we have safeguarded the city of Mbandaka, but so far there hasn't been an explosive increase in cases ... We have reason to be cautiously optimistic," Salama said.He added that the next stage of the vaccination strategy would focus on the remote regions of Iboko and Bikoro, where most of the cases have been reported.Salama also said officials were planning to test five unlicensed drugs for Ebola, pending Congo's approval. Two of the drugs were previously used in past Ebola outbreaks, but the three remaining medicines have mostly been tested in animals. Salama said using the drugs in Congo's basic health clinics would be challenging since some involve intravenous infusions and require daily monitoring of kidney and liver functions.Bikoro has had no electricity and no functioning lab, officials said, and outbreak response efforts in Iboko have required the establishment of helicopter landing sites and electricity.Salama said WHO has been focused on three separate chains of Ebola transmission connected to a funeral, a church gathering and a visit to a health centre in Bikoro. He said officials were trying to monitor about 900 contacts of Ebola cases but couldn't say how many of the newly reported cases are coming from previously identified contacts.Having new cases arise from people not already under observation suggests the virus could be spreading unchecked in certain areas."This is a work in progress," Salama said, adding that the "overwhelming majority" of contacts were being followed up on a daily basis and that vaccination was providing further reassurance the epidemic might soon be controlled.___This version corrects to say only 12 deaths have been confirmed as Ebola. The Associated Press.

23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Vertical plume of ash explodes from Hawaii volcano-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

HONOLULU (Reuters) - A small explosion of ash erupted from the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano early on Tuesday morning in a vertical plume some 15,000 feet (4,600 meters) high, the U.S. Geological Survey said, the latest outburst in a month of volcanic activity. The agency warned that ash was drifting northwest and liable to dust anyone in the summit area. Hundreds of people have been ordered to leave the vicinity of the biggest eruption cycle in a century of one of the world's most active volcanoes.Multiple fissures continue to spew up hot lava flows, which have blocked roads and damaged dozens of buildings on Hawaii's Big Island. [nL2N1SX09Z]-One fountain of lava rose more than 200 feet (60 meters) at times on Monday, the Geological Survey said.Officials are on high alert for occasional earthquakes, though none have been big enough so far to trigger a tsunami.Lava has engulfed the heads of two wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth's core at the 38-megawatt Puna Geothermal Venture. Its operator, Israeli-controlled Ormat Technologies Inc, said it had not been able to assess the damage. [nL2N1SX0DV]-So far no deaths have been blamed on the eruption, though a man's leg was shattered when he was hit by a spatter of super-dense lava. [nL2N1SR00X] Residents fear the wells may be explosive. Officials have said the power plant is safe but lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world, creating a measure of uncertainty.Contingency plans have been made for a possible helicopter evacuation of up to 1,000 residents in a coastal area south of the fissures should their last exit route, be blocked by lava or become unsafe due to gaping cracks, County of Hawaii officials said. [nL2N1SW08J]-At least 82 homes have been destroyed in the southeastern corner of Big Island and about 2,000 people have been ordered evacuated since Kilauea began erupting on May 3.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa; writing and additional reporting by Jonathan Allen; Editing by Scott Malone and Jonathan Oatis)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Flooded residents in Maryland wonder about rebuilding-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-David Mcfadden,-May 29, 2018

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- After yet another devastating flash flood ripped apart their historic Maryland mill town, hundreds of residents and business owners are again asking themselves: Should I stay or should I go? Some people in picturesque Ellicott City — established in 1772 as a Patapsco River mill town surrounded by hills — say they're determined to rebuild after Sunday's devastation. Their hope: to pull together as a community again after the second terrible flood deluged their downtown in less than two years.Simon Cortes, owner of La Palapa Grill & Cantina, said Monday it's "a horrible time," and his business took on about a foot (30 centimeters) of water. But he says the town has been through it all before, and he'll do his part to spur another revival."I feel like it's our duty to make sure that we rebuild and open back up," said Cortes, whose restaurant is right by the spot where a 39-year-old man was swept away by Sunday's raging floodwaters.Others are stretched to the breaking point by the floods, which tore up streets and swept away dozens of cars in the quaint downtown of historic 18th and 19th century buildings, which sit in a ravine about 13 miles (20 kilometers) west of Baltimore. Now the locals face yet another massive cleanup, serious economic losses and a daunting comeback.Sunday's torrential rains came just as the town seemed to come back stronger than ever from a dreadful July 2016 flash flood that killed two people.Getting flood insurance around old Ellicott City was a pricy proposition before. Now, people don't even want to think about how much it might cost, on top of the debts they're still paying from the last time their homes and businesses were destroyed.Nathan Sowers, owner of the River House Pizza Co., an outdoor eatery in the old mill town's business district, said that after all the hard work rebuilding from the 2016 flood, he's feeling a bit overwhelmed at attempting yet another comeback."We'll see. It takes a lot of money and a lot of time, a lot of energy. We'll just have to assess it," he said, speaking near a bridge where several crushed cars were swept into a muddy tributary's banks. But Sowers said he saw other hard-hit locals laughing and joking about their troubles first thing Monday morning — a good sign the Maryland town will launch yet another rebirth. But the bad news just kept coming following the torrential rains: On Tuesday morning, county authorities issued what they called a "precautionary health alert" after a sewage main broke about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away from Ellicott City's historic main street. The sewage overflow, which was first noticed early Monday, has been stopped. But as much as 500,000 gallons of sewage had already spilled and residents were being told to stay away from the affected area.People were also heartbroken that 39-year-old Eddison Hermond of Severn, Maryland remains missing. He was last seen trying to help a woman rescue her cat behind a restaurant while seething brown waters surged through the downtown.Howard County Police Chief Gary Gardner said the National Guard member and U.S. Air Force veteran had been with a group at the La Palapa Grill & Cantina when a woman approached, desperately trying to rescue her pet just outside."He, along with some other folks, went back to assist her and unfortunately during that effort they saw him go under water," Gardner told reporters.Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman said his immediate priorities are finding Hermond and assessing the condition of damaged buildings that housed shops, restaurants and families."If you look at the devastation and the damage, I would certainly say it's worse than 2016," Kittleman said. "We've had areas that were not even damaged at all two years ago terribly damaged this time."Ellicott City certainly got the worst of it. But torrential rains led to such bad flooding in Baltimore County, Baltimore City and the capital of Annapolis that Gov. Larry Hogan declared a statewide emergency to better coordinate support and assistance.Mike Muccilli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said it was too early to make comparisons between the two devastating floods. In the July 2016 storm, Ellicott City received 6.6 inches (17 centimeters) of rain over a two- to three-hour period. On Sunday, the community received some 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of rain over a six-hour period, most of it in an intense, three-hour period, Muccilli said."In a normal heavy rain ... you wouldn't see this amount of flooding, where you see cars floating down the road," the meteorologist said. "This was a true flash flood."___Associated Press writer Brian Witte in Annapolis, Maryland, contributed to this report.___Follow McFadden on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dmcfadd

Cyber crooks claim to hit two big Canadian banks-[Reuters]-By Matt Scuffham-TOI-YAHOONEWS-May 28, 2018

TORONTO (Reuters) - Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce said on Monday that cyber attackers may have stolen the data of nearly 90,000 customers in what appeared to be the first significant assault on financial institutions in the country.Bank of Montreal , Canada's fourth biggest lender, said on Monday it was contacted by fraudsters on Sunday who claimed they were in possession of the personal and financial information of a limited number of the bank's customers.A spokesman for the bank said it believed that less than 50,000 of the bank's 8 million customers across Canada were hacked. He declined to say if any customers lost money as a result of the attack. The fraudsters had threatened to make the data public, the spokesman said, adding that the bank was working with the authorities and conducting a thorough investigation.Bank of Montreal said it believed the attack originated from outside the country and was confident the exposures that led to the theft of customer data had been closed off.Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce , Canada's fifth biggest lender, said fraudsters contacted the lender on Sunday claiming they had electronically stolen personal and account information of 40,000 customers of its Simplii direct banking brand.CIBC said it has not yet confirmed the cyber breach but is taking the claim seriously. CIBC said customers at its main banking division were not affected. Both banks said they were contacting customers and advising them to monitor their accounts and report any suspicious activity.Other Canadian banks said they had not been affected.Shares in BMO were down 0.3 percent and CIBC was off 0.3 percent.Canada's six biggest banks have been collaborating along with the Bank of Canada to enhance their defenses against cyber attacks. The Bank of Canada said earlier this month that some attacks would inevitably succeed but it has recovery mechanisms in place to limit the damage.Cyber attacks are increasingly common. Last year, credit monitoring firm Equifax said information on about 146.6 million names, 146.6 million dates of birth, 145.5 million U.S. social security numbers, 99 million addresses and 209,000 payment card numbers and expiration dates, were stolen in a cyber attack.(Reporting by Matt Scuffham; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)

Four years on, MH370 families await report as search ends for missing plane-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Rozanna Latiff-May 29, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's new government has promised to release a long-awaited report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 as a privately funded underwater search ended on Tuesday.Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, vanished enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, becoming one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. The government of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said last week that U.S. seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity, which had scoured the southern Indian Ocean for the aircraft since January, would end its hunt on Tuesday. The previous administration of Najib Razak, who was defeated in a stunning election upset on May 9, had promised up to $70 million to the Texas-based firm if it found the plane within 90 days.Malaysia's transport minister, Anthony Loke, said a full report into MH370's disappearance would be published in the near future, but he did not give a date."I can assure you the final report will be published with full disclosure. There will not be any edits, or anything hidden," he told reporters late on Monday.Asked whether the report would refer to controversial elements of the MH370 case, he said: "To me, whatever elements, we will just publish it".Last year, Australian authorities said the MH370 captain had flown a route on his home simulator six weeks before the disappearance that was "initially similar" to the course actually taken by the aircraft.Peter Foley, who led the Australian Transport Safety Bureau's search efforts, told an Australian Senate hearing "control inputs" had been made to fly the airliner off course, but he could not say if one of the pilots had done so.Malaysian investigators said in 2015 they had found nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of the pilots or crew.FAMILIES CALL FOR REVIEW-The decision to engage Ocean Infinity came after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200-million ($159 million) search across a 120,000 square-kilometer (46,332 square mile) expanse of the Indian Ocean last year. This was despite investigators calling for the target area to be extended north by 25,000 square kilometers (9653 square miles).Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett said on Tuesday their team had searched more than 112,000 square kilometers (43,243 square miles) of ocean floor in a little over three months. While the outcome was "extremely disappointing", Plunkett hoped the company would be able to offer its services again in a future search for the airliner.Asked if China would consider further funding for the search, or whether search organizations had asked China for more resources, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had always maintained close communication with the relevant parties."We will continue to maintain communication with relevant parties," Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing in Beijing.Voice 370, a group representing the relatives of those aboard the flight, has pressed the new Malaysian government to review all matters related to MH370, including "any possible falsification or elimination of records related to MH370 and its maintenance".Calvin Shim, whose wife was a crew member on the plane, said he was concerned that the accident report would not include key information such as the plane's full cargo manifest and the results of a separate investigation by Malaysian police."We know that this issue is already four years old and a lot of people involved want closure," he said."These four years have not been fun to us, the families."Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the search had tested the limits of technology and capacity of experts and people at sea.It would only resume if there was "credible evidence which identifies a specific location of the missing aircraft"."We will always remain hopeful that one day the aircraft will be located," McCormack's office said in a statement. The only confirmed traces of the plane have been three wing fragments found washed up on Indian Ocean coasts.(Reporting by Rozanna Latiff; Additional reporting by Jamie Freed in SINGAPORE, Michael Martina in BEIJING and Colin Packham in SYDNEY; Editing by Darren Schuettler)

Gunman reportedly shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ kills three in Belgian city-Investigators look at possible terror motive after two police officers and a passerby shot dead in eastern city of Liege; attacker also killed-By Sue Surkes and AFP-TOI-MAY 29,18

A gunman in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday shot dead three people — two police officers and a passerby in a vehicle — before he was killed by elite officers.Prosecutors said the attacker killed the police officers with their own firearms. The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. near a high school on a major street in the city, which is around 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of Brussels, close to the German border. The French-language Belgian news site LaLibre reported that the man had shouted “Allahu akbar” before police shot him.The file has been passed to the federal prosecutor responsible for terrorism, one person at the Liege federal prosecutor’s office, spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt, said.“There are elements that go in the direction of a terrorist act,” he was quoted by the French language RTL news site as saying. But Catherine Collignon, another spokeswoman for the same office, told the AFP news agency that the attacker’s motive was not immediately clear. “We don’t know anything yet,” she said.Media reports said the gunman shot dead two police officers at a cafe before fleeing to the Lycee Waha school, where he took a cleaning lady hostage.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Center was monitoring the situation.???? We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter. The crisis center said a security cordon had been set up around the area and urged people to stay away.Belgium has been on high alert since the smashing of a terror cell in the town of Verviers in January 2015 that was planning an attack on police. The Verviers cell also had links to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the November 2015 Islamic State attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.Belgium further raised its terror alert level after the Paris attack, and placed the capital Brussels on lockdown for a week.Belgium was then hit by its own IS suicide attacks on Brussels airport and a metro station that killed 32 people. In March, Belgian police arrested eight people in Brussels in counter-terror raids as part of an investigation into what one source said appeared to be preparations for an attack.

Hezbollah men, including commander, said killed in Syria strike blamed on Israel-Attack reportedly wrecks operational coordination center near Al-Qusayr, close to where munitions depot belonging to group was destroyed in a raid on Thursday-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

A senior commander and other members of the Iranian-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group were killed overnight in an Israeli airstrike, Sky’s Arabic-language channel reported Tuesday. The strikes reportedly took place near the Syrian town of Al-Qusayr in the Homs district, close to the Lebanese border. There was no Israeli comment on the report. It cited sources saying the strikes destroyed a coordination center for operations and set fire to various places. On Thursday, airstrikes attributed to the IDF destroyed Hezbollah munitions depots at the al-Qusayr airbase, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.“Six missiles were fired at the Daba’a military airport and surrounding area in the western sector of Homs province, targeting Lebanese Hezbollah weapons warehouses,” Rami Abd el-Rahman, director of the Observatory, told AFP, adding, “The missiles would have been fired by Israel.”Daba’a is another name for the al-Qusayr airbase, and the surrounding area is known to be a stronghold for Hezbollah and Iran-backed militias. It was also reportedly struck by Israel in a raid during an exchange with Syrian and Iranian forces on May 10.The raid came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s al-Quds Force launched 32 rockets at Israel’s forward defensive line on the Golan Heights border.Israel and Iran have been waging a quiet war in Syria for several years.Israel maintains that it will take military action to stop Tehran from entrenching itself in Syria. On Monday, the Haaretz newspaper reported that Russia was considering trying to keep Iranian forces and their allies away from the border, fearing that repeated Israeli strikes could undermine Syrian President Bashar Assad’s grip on the country.According to the report, Russia decided to work on a deal to remove the Iranian troops following the heavy Israeli attack on Iranian targets in Syria on May 10.Israel has acknowledged carrying out several aerial raids on Iranian targets in Syria, and suspected of carrying out several more.Tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria have stepped up considerably in recent months, beginning in February when an Iranian drone carrying explosives was flown from the T-4 air base in central Syria into Israeli airspace and was shot down by an IAF helicopter.Israel conducted a series of reprisal raids, first against the air base and then against Syrian air defenses, which had fired on the Israeli jets and shot down one F-16.Much of the Iranian infrastructure is set up on Syrian bases and Israel has also frequently hit Syrian air defenses during strikes on Iranian targets.

One suspect in Mississauga, Ont., restaurant explosion may be female, police say-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — One of two suspects wanted in connection with an explosion that injured 15 people at a restaurant west of Toronto may be a woman, contrary to earlier reports, police said Tuesday.Investigators originally said both suspects seen on video entering the Bombay Bhel restaurant in Mississauga, Ont., last week were men, but new video evidence and witness input suggests at least one of the suspects could be female, said Peel regional police Supt. Rob Ryan.Police have finished processing the scene of the blast and are now analysing a collection of evidence that includes fingerprints, DNA, surveillance video, interviews with people present at the restaurant that night and remnants of the explosive device itself, Ryan said."Investigators spent hundreds of hours over the weekend combing the scene for every fine detail that might help them to understand what happened that night," he said."What led the two suspects to detonate this device is still not clear," he added. "We do not have clear motive and no one has claimed responsibility."The suspects were in and out of the restaurant in a short amount of time, and fled the scene on foot before their homemade explosive device detonated, police said.Investigators have traced the suspects' escape route with drones and dogs, and believe the pair headed eastward from Bombay Bhel, cutting through a construction site and then a residential subdivision, Ryan said.Police have said they think the suspects ultimately got into a vehicle.Ryan said assistance from the community would be "critical" to the investigation, and urged anyone with information to contact police, whether they witnessed any part of what happened the night of the bombing, or know something about the suspects."We know there are people out there who know who did this and it's time for them to do the right thing and come forward," Ryan said.Ryan said investigators still don't know the motive for the attack, but said the suspects would be charged with attempted murder, among other offences, if caught. The fifteen people injured in the explosion — three of them critically — have all since been treated and released from hospital, police said.Peter Goffin , The Canadian Press.

Syrian army ready for southern battle, pro-Assad commander says-[Reuters]-By Laila Bassam and Tom Perry-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has completed preparations for an imminent offensive against rebel-held areas in southwestern Syria, a non-Syrian commander in a military alliance that backs Damascus said on Tuesday, raising the prospect of a major new escalation. However, a rebel commander in the Deraa region of the southwest told Reuters there was no sign of mobilization for such an assault and accused Damascus of waging psychological warfare. Nevertheless, rebels had prepared defenses, he said. The rebel-held southwest has come into focus after the Syrian government, backed militarily by Iran and Russia, crushed the last besieged rebel enclaves near Damascus and north of the city of Homs. Damascus has vowed to recover the whole country. The southwest is of concern to the United States, which last year brokered a "de-escalation" deal with Jordan and President Bashar al-Assad's Russian allies, which has largely contained the war near the frontier with Israel. The United States warned on Saturday it would take "firm and appropriate measures" in response to any violations of the ceasefire in that area. While Assad is militarily unassailable in the Syrian conflict, swathes of territory at the frontiers with Iraq, Turkey and Jordan and Israel remain outside his control. The role of outside powers in these areas complicates further gains by Damascus. The pro-Assad commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Syrian army's preparations for the assault were complete. "The Syrian army will wage all the battles and has now become strong and capable," the commander said.Israel wants Iran-backed forces removed from areas near its frontier - and from Syria in general. Iran-backed Shi'ite militias, often spearheaded by Lebanon's Hezbollah, have played a critical role fighting in support of Assad.Russia said on Monday that only Syrian army troops should be at the southern border with Jordan and Israel. On Tuesday, its foreign ministry said Russia, the United States and Jordan had agreed to meet about the "de-escalation" zone, RIA news agency reported.-"PSYCHOLOGICAL WAR"-An article published in the pro-Damascus al-Watan newspaper said signs "on the horizon" indicated the southern battle was near as "final touches" were put in place. But the rebel commander, Colonel Nassim Abu Arra of the Youth of Sunna Forces, told Reuters there was no sign of an imminent attack."So far there are no indications of that. I am speaking from a position on the frontlines," he said in a telephone interview. "But there are rumors, a psychological war," he said.In the last week, he said several military convoys had left government-held parts of Deraa city heading north, saying he believed these to be Iran-backed forces being evacuated from the region. They had not been replaced, he added. His faction was keeping the United States and Jordan abreast of the situation on the ground. "We are taking from them reassurances that the southern region is subjected to the de-escalation agreement and ceasefire," he said. But his fighters had still prepared defenses. "I assure you the opposition forces have taken a number of measures ... including digging trenches and tunnels to prevent the regime from launching any attack," he said.(This version of the story corrects the name of rebel commander in paragraph 11)(Reporting by Laila Bassam and Tom Perry and Polina Ivanova in Moscow; Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Richard Balmforth, Larry King)

Japan navy spots suspected China ship next to NKorea tanker-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

TOKYO — Japan's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that a Japanese navy surveillance aircraft has spotted a suspected Chinese-flagged ship apparently transferring fuel to a North Korean tanker on the open seas.A ministry statement said that the two vessels were suspected of engaging in offshore ship-to-ship transfers banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions. It said Japan has informed the U.N. Security Council of the May 19 sighting of the North Korean-flagged tanker, Ji Song 6, moored alongside the ship carrying a flag believed to be Chinese in open seas in the East China Sea.Four photos taken by the Maritime Self- Defence Force were released, including two showing the ships alongside each other, connected by a hose. The U.N. has blacklisted the North Korean tanker. The disclosure of the alleged offshore transfer comes as preparations for an expected summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be in their final stages.U.N. sanctions on the North limit energy trade and ban offshore transfers of goods to North Korean ships as part of international efforts to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons.Japan and the U.S. have said the sanctions must be enforced strictly to be effective, and asked China in particular to tighten enforcement. The Associated Press.
