Palestinians, Israeli Arabs strike against Israel’s nation-state law-1,500 participate in central march in memory of 13 killed in clashes with police in October 2000-By TOI staff and Agencies-OCT 4,18

Palestinians joined Israeli Arabs in a general strike Monday protesting Israel’s controversial Jewish nation-state law and commemorating the deaths of 13 people killed in clashes with police in October 2000.The action was also to protest steps taken by the Trump administration vis-a-vis the Palestinians, including the moving of the US embassy to Jerusalem and the cutting of funding to the UNRWA relief agency. In the Arab Israeli community of Jatt in northern Israel, 1,500 participated in the central march in memory of the October 1 victims, killed in a series of clashes with police in 2000 during protests in support of the second Palestinian intifada.Twelve Israeli Arabs and a Palestinian were killed in the clashes in October 2000.Carrying pictures of the victims, Palestine flags and signs against Israel’s nation-state law, the protesters marched along with members of the Knesset including Ayman Odeh, head of the Joint (Arab) List.“We’re striking today to remind that this wound is still bleeding,” Odeh said, pledging to continue to fight against the treatment of Israeli Arabs as “second-class citizens, and racist legislation.”Joint (Arab) List MK Yousef Jabareen said the strike was a protest by Israeli Arabs who say the bill turns them into second and third class citizens“The strike sends a message of opposition to the continued discrimination and racism towards the Arab public, which will not receive inferior citizenship status as second or third class citizens,” he said, according to the Ynet news site. “We were born in this country and will fight for national equality. Full and equal citizenship for all.”In East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, schools and many businesses were closed, AFP journalists reported. The Arab Quarter in Jerusalem’s historic Old City was especially quiet.Demonstrations were also held in Ramallah, where minor clashes erupted by a checkpoint on the West Bank city’s outskirts. Clashes were also reported in the tense southern West Bank city of Hebron.Ramallah resident Khaled Abu Ayoush said the strike was “against the policy pursued by Israel in order to erase Palestinian nationalism and the displacement of citizens from their land.”Mahmoud Hamed however kept open his bakery outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City. “We are a bakery,” he said. “In wars, in strikes, people usually need a break.”Senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi said the strike also aimed to show solidarity with the West Bank village of Khan al-Ahmar, near Jerusalem.Israel plans to demolish the Bedouin community, which it says was built illegally, despite international calls for a reprieve.Critics argue that the nation-state law, which enshrines Israel’s status at the nation-state of the Jewish people, contravenes the basis of Israel’s legal system as well as its Declaration of Independence by institutionalizing inequality among its citizens. Many Israelis and some in the international community have condemned the legislation, which they say turns minorities into second-class citizens.MK Jamal Zahalka and Jabareen met this week with Senator Bernie Sanders and a number of US congressmen as part of the campaign against the legislation, the Walla news site reported.Zahalka asked the members of congress to put pressure on the Israeli government to repeal the law, and after the meeting, the American lawmakers apparently expressed willingness to work against the bill and agreed to maintain contact with the Joint List. The Netanyahu government says the legislation does not harm anybody’s rights and the new law merely enshrines the country’s existing character, and that Israel’s democratic nature and provisions for equality are already anchored in existing legislation.Multiple petitions against the law have already been filed with the High Court of Justice by Druze, Arab and Bedouin leaders, rights groups, academics, and the Meretz and Joint List political parties. Several more petitions are currently being drafted.Earlier this month, a delegation of Arab Israeli lawmakers from the Joint List met with the head of the Arab League in Cairo to discuss the Jewish nation-state law and its implications for a peace deal with the Palestinians.Last month, 30,000 Israeli Arabs and Jews demonstrated against the legislation in Tel Aviv. An earlier, similar rally of the Druze community drew around 50,000 people.Netanyahu has said a government team will review ways to strengthen the state’s ties to minorities, but has stressed he opposes altering the controversial legislation.

Dozens said injured in fresh clashes near Gaza security fence-Hamas-run health ministry says 10 wounded by live fire; flotilla turns back after attempt to break maritime blockade as IDF fires warning shots-By TOI staff-OCT 4,18

Dozens of Palestinians were reportedly injured on Monday evening in fresh clashes with IDF troops along the Gaza Strip’s northern border with Israel. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said 51 people were injured by Israeli troops during the protests, including 10 from live fire, according to reports in Palestinian media.Israel’s Channel 10 said 4,000 Gazans demonstrated along the northern border with Israel, with protesters burning tires and hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails, and firecrackers at soldiers. The protests also saw a several-boat flotilla attempt to break Israel’s naval blockade off Gaza’s coast, in what has become a common occurrence in recent weeks. Palestinian media reported the IDF fired warning shots at the boats, prompting them to return to shore.Earlier on Monday, firefighters worked to extinguish four blazes adjacent to Israeli communities, which were sparked by airborne incendiary devices launched by protesters inside the Gaza Strip. The latest violence comes in the wake of heavy clashes on Friday in which seven Palestinians, including two teenagers, were reported killed. The army released footage of the violent demonstrations, which it said were the worst in two months, depicting attempts to breach and sabotage the security fence. The IDF said over 100 improvised bombs and grenades were hurled at troops during the day’s clashes that it said drew some 20,000 Palestinians. The protest was one of the largest and most violent in recent weeks and comes following the breakdown of indirect talks with Israel over a ceasefire and warnings that the terror group Hamas, which rules Gaza, was gearing up for another conflict. The Hamas-run Health Ministry identified three of the protesters it said were shot dead as Nasser Mosabih, 12, Mohammed al-Houm, 14, and Iyad Al-Shaar, 18. The ministry said the other four were in their twenties, and that another 210 Palestinians were wounded by IDF troops, including 90 injured by live fire. The riots have increased in recent weeks, going from a weekly event to near nightly protests since Hamas halted indirect talks with Israel aimed at a ceasefire. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has also worsened and reconciliation talks with the Palestinian Authority have broken down.Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and actively calls for Israel’s destruction, has increased the pace of rioting and demonstrations against Israel, and created new units tasked with sustaining tensions along the border fence including during nighttime and early morning hours. The Egyptian efforts to reconcile Hamas and Fatah have not borne fruit at this stage, and the possibility of a long-term ceasefire with Israel has apparently stalled, Thursday’s analysis by Times of Israel’s Avi Issacaharoff said. The economic situation has once again reached an unprecedented low, stoking fury among Gazans that is being directed against Israel, the PA, Hamas, and even Egypt. On Friday, the Haaretz daily quoted Israeli security sources as saying that Hamas is preparing for war, bolstering its forces significantly over the past few weeks. That assessment is not new, IDF sources told Haaretz, having warned repeatedly that the situation is more likely to escalate than to calm down. However, recently the army noted that the terror group appears to actively be readying itself for a limited conflict with Israel. It is only a question of when Hamas will decide to go to war, the paper said. The surge of violence in Gaza began in March with a series of protests along the border that were dubbed the “March of Return.” The clashes have included regular rock and Molotov cocktail attacks on troops, as well as shooting and IED attacks aimed at IDF soldiers, and attempts to breach the border fence.Gaza protesters have also launched incendiary kites and balloons into Israel, sparking fires that have destroyed forests, burned crops, and killed livestock. Over 7,000 acres of land have been burned, causing millions of shekels in damages, according to Israeli officials. Some balloons have carried improvised explosive devices. At least 140 Palestinians were killed during the protests since late March, according to AP figures. Hamas has acknowledged that dozens of the fatalities were its members.Agencies contributed to this report.

Las Vegas ceremony honours victims 1 year after shooting-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

A flock of 58 doves was released at a sombre sunrise remembrance ceremony Monday in Las Vegas that started a day of memorials to honour the lives lost when a gunman opened fire on a crowd attending an outdoor country music concert a year ago in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.Several hundred people including survivors, families of victims, first-responders and elected officials gathered at an outdoor amphitheatre for the daybreak event to honour the 58 people who were killed and the 400 who were wounded."Today we remember the unforgettable. Today, we comfort the inconsolable," said Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. "Today, we are reminded of the pain that never really goes away."Among the attendees offering prayers, songs and speeches at the event was Mynda Smith. She remembered her sister, Nyesa Davis Tonks, a 46-year-old single mother originally from the Salt Lake City area who had been raising three boys in Las Vegas. Smith said her sister was energetic, adventurous and a fan of all kinds of music."I want to bring the message about living life to the fullest," Smith said. "About how grateful we are for our community, the love and support that we got, and being 'Vegas Strong.'''Smith started a scholarship fund for victims' children and says she reached loved ones of almost all the dead. Thirty-three were from California, six others from Nevada, 12 from other states and four from Canada."It was a heartbreak every time," Smith said. "This was a tragedy of grand scale. We have a long way to go. But we have to move forward with love and light."As the sunrise service went on, Jim Murren, the chief executive and CEO of MGM Resorts International, issued a statement calling the shooting "an unforgettable act of terror." MGM owns the Mandalay Bay hotel, where the gunman was when he opened fire on a crowd at an outdoor concert below on the Las Vegas Strip."Oct. 1 will forever be a day of remembrance, reflection and mourning as we struggle to comprehend the incomprehensible — the senseless act of evil that caused such a tragic loss of life, along with the suffering that we know continues," Murren said. Many who were cheering Jason Aldean's headline set on the Las Vegas Strip late Oct. 1, 2017 , said later they thought the rapid crack-crack-crack they heard was fireworks — until people fell dead, wounded, bleeding. From across neon-lit Las Vegas Boulevard, a gambler-turned-gunman with what police later called a meticulous plan but an unknown reason fired assault-style rifles for 11 minutes from the 32nd-floor windows of the Mandalay Bay hotel into the concert crowd below. Police said he then put a pistol in his mouth and killed himself.FBI report on investigation expected-Medical examiners later determined that all 58 deaths were from gunshots. Another 413 people were wounded, and police said at least 456 were injured fleeing the carnage.Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo spoke at the sunrise event, recalling the chaos and confusion of the night."When the sun rose the next morning, grief turned to anger, anger turned to resolve and resolve turned to action," Lombardo said.He remembered prayers to "heal broken hearts," blood banks filled with donors and "acts of kindness that comforted the suffering."Lombardo didn't provide answers to what made Stephen Craig Paddock unleash his hail of gunfire. He declared the police investigation ended in August. He issued a report that said hundreds of interviews and thousands of hours of investigative work found no motive, no conspiracy and no other shooters.A final FBI report, including a behavioural analysis of Paddock, is expected by year's end.Another report last month involving the Federal Emergency Management Agency found communications were snarled and police, fire and medical responders were overwhelmed by 911 calls, false reports of other shootings and the number of victims.Las Vegas police continue to make weekly releases of material collected following the attack under court order in a media public records lawsuit. Included have been investigative documents, 911 audio recordings, police reports, witness statements and many hours of officer body-worn video.Paddock, 64, was characterized by police as a loner with no religious or political affiliations who became obsessed with guns, spent more than $1.5 million in the two years before the shooting, and distanced himself from his girlfriend and family.Paddock's gambling habits made him a sought-after casino patron. Over several days, Mandalay Bay employees readily let him use a service elevator to take suitcases to the $590 US-per-night suite he had been provided for free. The room had a commanding view of the Strip and the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert grounds across the street. After breaking out windows, Paddock fired 1,057 shots in 11 minutes, police say.Incendiary shots hit airport fuel tanks but didn't ignite. He sprayed gunfire through his suite door, wounding a hotel security guard in the leg. Paddock may have seen the guard coming with a camera set up on a service cart in the hall, police said.Sixty-four minutes after shooting stopped, a SWAT officer with explosives blasted through Paddock's hotel room door. Officers found him dead on the floor with guns and ammunition clips strewn about.Paddock left survival gear and thousands of rounds of ammunition in the room and bomb-making materials in his car parked in the Mandalay Bay valet area. Police said he left no suicide note or manifesto.

Muslim community gets 'proper place' to pray in Airdrie-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

The small Muslim community in Airdrie, Alta., now has a place of their own to get together and pray. After many years of using a local church and travelling to mosques in northeast Calgary, the community just opened the Airdrie Islamic Centre. The first prayers where held there on Thursday. The centre will hold daily prayers and Friday prayers — called Jumma'ah — as well as Islamic school classes for kids on Sundays, operated by the North West Islamic School of Calgary."I'm very, very happy," Yasmin Khan said. "Mostly we pray at home, and it's different to come and do a collective job here."And I'm so happy to see the kids here, that they are going to take lessons and get to know their own religion."'Proper place' for prayers-"Now we have a proper place to say our prayers," said Mona Shehzad, who has lived in Airdrie for the past 11 years. The city is estimated to have at least 60 Muslim families living there."The church here, it was fabulous, really generous that they gave us that place to worship and it really stands for the Canadian culture that we can say our prayers even in a church and we really appreciate that," said Shehzad. But the new Islamic centre, tucked away behind the Safeway off Main Street, is not just about prayers. It also provides a gathering spot for the community to host different cultural and social activities."It feels really good that now finally we have our own place and everyone's welcome here. If people have questions, we'll be happy to answer them," Muhammad Huraira said. The Muslim Council of Calgary is funding the new centre."The council represents about 80,000 Muslims in Calgary and when we feel there's a gap we try and fill that need," said Ghazanfar Zafar, secretary of the MCC."This centre is phase one, and in the future we may even build a permanent centre."Airdrie resident Muhib Ali said the new centre will be more convenient for Muslims living there."When we moved here a couple of years ago, we didn't really have a lot of things for the Muslim community and it's nice to see we're trying to make a footprint here," said Ali, who added he won't miss icy winter drives to Calgary to pray."It's the start of a stronger community, and it will help bring awareness of our religion here, too."

French police raid Muslim club in counter-terror swoop-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

LILLE, France (Reuters) - French police raided the premises of a Muslim club before dawn on Tuesday as well as the homes of members of the club, in a swoop that the local government prefect's office said was prompted by serious suspicions of pro-Islamist militancy. The operation involving some two hundred police began around 6 a.m. targeted a club known as Centre Zahra France and 12 of its members in an area called Grande Synthe, near Dunkirk and not far from Calais on France's northern coast-France, home to Europe's largest Muslim community, remains on maximum security alert after attacks over recent years in which Islamist militants and assailants inspired by militant groups such as Islamic State have killed close to 250 people."This is a counter-terrorism operation," said a statement from the prefect's office."The activities of Centre Zahra France are under particularly close watch given its leaders' clear support for several terrorist oganizations and movements espousing ideas contrary to (French) republican values," it said.(Reporting by Pierre Savary in Lille; Writing by Brian Love; Editing by Leigh Thomas)

China condemns U.S. for South China Sea freedom of navigation operation-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

BEIJING (Reuters) - China expressed anger on Tuesday after a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed near islands claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea, saying it resolutely opposed an operation that it called a threat to its sovereignty.Beijing and Washington are locked in a trade war in which they have imposed increasingly severe rounds of tariffs on each other's imports.A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the destroyer the USS Decatur traveled within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands on Sunday. The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate.China's Defence Ministry said a Chinese naval ship had been sent to warn the U.S. vessel to leave. The ministry said China has irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and the waters around them, and the situation there is progressing well thanks to the hard work of China and countries in Southeast Asia."The U.S. side repeatedly sends military ships without permission into seas close to South China Seas islands, seriously threatening China's sovereignty and security, seriously damaging Sino-U.S. military ties and seriously harming regional peace and stability," the ministry said."China's military is resolutely opposed to this," it said. The Chinese armed forces will continue to take all necessary steps to protect the country's sovereignty and security, the ministry said.China's Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement it strongly urged the United States to stop such "provocative" actions and to "immediately correct its mistakes".The operation also comes as military ties between the two countries have dived, with China also angered by U.S. sanctions on China's military for buying Russian arms and by U.S. support for self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday he did not see relations between the United States and China worsening, a day after his trip to China was canceled.Reuters reported on Sunday that China canceled a security meeting with Mattis that had been planned for October. A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Mattis was no longer going to China.China has not yet commented on the matter.Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe is due to visit the United States later this year but China's Defence Ministry suggested last week that may not happen.(Reporting by Ben Blanchard; Additional reporting by David Stanway in SHANGHAI; Editing by Paul Tait)

North Korea says war's end can't be bargaining chip for denuclearization: KCNA-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Tuesday that declaring the end of the 1950-53 Korean War "can never be a bargaining chip" for getting North Korea denuclearised, and said the country "will not particularly hope for it" if the United States does not want the end of war, according to state media KCNA.In a joint statement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in their Pyongyang summit last month, North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un expressed a willingness to “permanently dismantle” the Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States takes corresponding action.

Moon said this would include a declaration of an official end to the war.

In a commentary, KCNA said on Tuesday that declaring the war's end should have "been resolved half a century ago," and called it "the most basic and primary process for the establishment of new DPRK-U.S. relations and peace" on the Korean peninsula "to which the U.S. was also committed," , referring to North Korea by its official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. At their unprecedented summit in June, U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim agreed in broad terms to "build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula."However, Washington wants North Korea to first provide a complete inventory of its weapons programs and take irreversible steps to give up its arsenal.KCNA said the Yongbyon nuclear facility, which the North expressed a willingness to take offline if the United States takes corresponding action, "is a core one for its nuclear program.""The DPRK is taking substantial and crucial steps to implement the joint statement made at the DPRK-U.S. summit, but the U.S. is still trying to subdue someone by resorting to sanctions," the unnamed commentary accused. However, three senior U.S. officials involved in North Korea policy previously told Reuters that no progress has been made in moving toward serious negotiations on eliminating or even halting Kim’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.Dismantling Yongbyon would slow the production of fissile material, but not reduce the current stockpile of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, nor clear suspicions of other secret production sites, an expert previously told Reuters.(Reporting by Joyce Lee; Editing by James Dalgleish)

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says death toll from earthquake and tsunami now 1,234-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

PALU, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says death toll from earthquake and tsunami now 1,234.

Indonesian leader says 'everyone must be found' as scale of quake disaster emerges-[Reuters]-By Fathin Ungku and Kanupriya Kapoor-YAHOONEWS-October 4, 2018

PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered more rescuers to hunt for victims of a devastating earthquake and tsunami on the island of Sulawesi, saying on Tuesday everyone had to be found, as the scale of destruction became clearer. Some remote areas have been out of contact for more than three days and officials fear the confirmed death toll of 844 could soar into the thousands when losses in those areas are revealed."The are some main priorities that we must tackle and the first is to evacuate, find and save victims who've not yet been found," Widodo told a government meeting to coordinate disaster recovery efforts. He said he had ordered the national search and rescue agency to send more police and soldiers into the affected districts, some cut off since Friday's 7.5 magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami waves destroyed roads, triggered landslides and downed bridges. The Red Cross said the situation was "nightmarish" and reports from its workers venturing into one cut-off area, Donggala, a region of 300,000 people north of Palu and close to the epicenter, indicated it had been hit "extremely hard".Four badly hit districts have a combined population of about 1.4 million. Most of the confirmed dead have been in the small city of Palu, 1,500 km (930 miles) northeast of Jakarta. The quake triggered tsunami waves as high as six meters (20 feet) that smashed into the city's beachfront, while hotels and shopping malls collapsed in ruins and some neighborhoods were swallowed up by ground liquefaction.Among those killed in the area were 34 children at a Christian bible study camp, a Red Cross official said.More than 50 of the dead were taken to a mass grave on the outskirts of Palu on Tuesday, while rescuers held out hope they could still save lives."We suspect there are still some survivors trapped inside," the head of one rescue team, Agus Haryono, told Reuters at the collapsed seven-storey Hotel Roa Roa.About 50 people were believed to have been caught inside the hotel when it was brought down.bout 12 people have been recovered from the ruins, with one more body on Tuesday.Three of the victims were recovered alive.Haryono pored over the hotel's blueprints and building plans, searching for possible pockets and a way through to them. A faint smell of decomposition hung in the air."We have to be very careful so we don't risk hurting any survivors when we move the debris," he said.Power has yet to be restored in the area and access by land to outlying villages has been disrupted by broken roads, landslides and downed bridges.Nearly 60,000 people have been displaced and are in need of emergency help, while thousands have been streaming out of stricken areas.'BURIED FAST'-Indonesia has said it would accept offers of international aid, having shunned outside help earlier this year when an earthquake struck the island of Lombok.Aftershocks have rattled jangled nerves.A particular horror in several areas in and around Palu was liquefaction, which happens when soil shaken by an earthquake behaves like a liquid.About 1,700 houses in one neighborhood were swallowed up, with hundreds of people believed buried, the national disaster agency said.Before-and-after satellite pictures show a largely built-up neighborhood just south of Palu's airport seemingly wiped clean of all signs of life by liquefaction.Elsewhere on the outskirts of Palu, trucks brought 54 bodies to a mass grave dug in sandy soil. Most of the bodies had not been claimed, a policeman said, but some relatives turned up to pay respects to loved ones at the 50 meter (165 feet) trench, where the smell of decomposition was overpowering."It's OK if he's buried in the mass grave, it's better to have him buried fast," said Rosmawati Binti Yahya, 52, whose husband was among those placed in the grave, before heading off to look for her missing daughter.Commercial airlines have struggled to restore operations at Palu's quake-damaged airport but military aircraft took some survivors out on Monday, while about 3,000 people thronged the airport hoping for any flight out.A navy vessel capable of taking 1,000 people at a time was due to be deployed to help with the evacuation. The power company was working to restore electricity while the state oil firm had sent in fuel, officials said.Teams of police were out on the streets on Tuesday, clearing debris and providing some reassurance to traumatized residents worried about looting.Sulawesi is one of the archipelago nation's five main islands.(Writing by Robert Birsel; Editing by Lincoln Feast and Paul Tait)
