Ford Carrier Strike Group is headed to the Caribbean Sea to escalate the nation's military presence amid strikes on alleged drug-running vessels.The carrier strike group currently is in the Mediterranean Sea and includes three destroyers, in addition to the aircraft carrier, NBC News reported."The enhanced U.S. force presence in the [Southern Command area] will bolster U.S. capacity to detect, monitor and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States homeland and our security in the Western Hemisphere," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a social media post."These forces will enhance and augment existing capabilities to disrupt narcotics trafficking and degrade and dismantle [transnational criminal organizations]," he added.The strike group will take about a week to cross the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Caribbean for its new deployment, where it will nearly double the number of vessels already deployed there.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the strike group to the Caribbean, where the U.S. military conducted its first nighttime strike on a vessel allegedly running drugs, he announced on Friday."The vessel was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transitioning along a known narco-trafficking route and carrying narcotics," Hegseth said in a post on X."Six male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters," Hegseth said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted on Sunday that Israel is a sovereign state that makes its own decisions on national security matters, in the wake of growing rumblings that key decisions about the future of the Gaza Strip are being made in Washington. He also specified that Israel would determine which countries would be permitted to send troops to Gaza within the framework of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.In the latest incident of US oversight, the Ynet news outlet reported that a strike in central Gaza on Saturday targeting a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative planning an “imminent attack” against troops was carried out only after authorization was received from American officials.Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu blasted “ridiculous claims about the relationship between the United States and Israel.”“When I was in Washington, [people] said I control the American government, that I dictate its security policy,” he said. “Now they claim the opposite — that the American administration controls me and dictates Israel’s security policy.”“Neither is true,” Netanyahu declared.A series of senior US officials came to Israel last week to oversee the implementation of phase one of Trump’s Gaza deal.“Israel is a sovereign state,” the prime minister stressed. “The United States is a sovereign state. Our relationship is a partnership.”Much of the criticism surrounding Israel’s freedom to act in Gaza emerged after a deadly attack killed two IDF soldiers in Rafah last week. The IDF blamed Hamas for the attack and launched a wave of intense strikes against the terror group in response, but quickly returned to the ceasefire after the US allegedly pressured Jerusalem to rein in its reaction. Hamas had said the incident occurred in an area under Israeli control where it claimed to have had no contact with its operatives for months.“I want to make one thing clear — our security policy is in our own hands,” Netanyahu continued. “We will not tolerate attacks against us; we respond at our discretion to attacks, as we have done in Lebanon and most recently in Gaza. We dropped 150 tons on Hamas and on terror elements after the attack on our two soldiers. And of course we also thwart dangers while they are forming before they are carried out, as we did only yesterday in the Gaza Strip.”Netanyahu said that Israel “does not seek anyone’s approval for that. We control our own security and we have also made clear regarding international forces that Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us — that is how we act and will continue to act.“This, of course, is accepted by the United States, as its most senior representatives have said in recent days,” he said, adding that “we will continue to control our fate.”Netanyahu’s office told The Times of Israel last week that it would not accept the deployment of Turkish troops, and the government reportedly remains firmly opposed to any role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza.On Saturday, the IDF said it carried out a drone strike in central Gaza’s Nuseirat, targeting a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative who was planning an “imminent attack” against troops.Palestinian media reported that one person was killed and others were injured in the strike, which hit a car in the Nuseirat area.Nuseirat is on the western side of the Yellow Line, meaning it is not under Israeli control according to the terms of the ceasefire.Ynet, citing sources familiar with the incident, reported that discussions about carrying out the strike were held at the most senior levels of the Israel Defense Forces, then by government leaders, before being coordinated with the US, including CENTCOM, which oversees US operations in the Middle East, including those relating to Israel.According to the report, that kind of strike on a terror operative would, in the past during the Gaza war, have required approval no higher than an IDF division commander.After the deadly attack on IDF soldiers and the wave of strikes in response last Sunday, top White House aides Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff rushed to Israel and arrived on Monday, followed by US Vice President JD Vance the next day. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio then arrived on Friday. All the US officials visited the US-Israel Civil-Military Coordination Center in Kiryat Gat, which has been set up to oversee the ceasefire and the continued implementation of the Trump plan.At a joint press conference on Wednesday, Netanyahu and Vance both pushed back against the suggestion that Israel has become a “client state” of the US.“I want to put it very clearly,” Netanyahu said in response to a question on the matter. “One week, they say that Israel controls the United States. On Wednesday afternoon, despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vehement opposition, multiple lawmakers from coalition and opposition parties voted, in different constellations, to advance two bills to apply sovereignty to the West Bank.The legislation, passed in preliminary readings, would need three more approvals in the Knesset plenum to become law — a highly unlikely prospect. But even the initial passage of the bills prompted harsh criticism from the Trump administration, with Vice President JD Vance, who was in Israel at the time, calling the votes a “very stupid political stunt,” and Trump himself moved to declare firmly that Israel would not be annexing anything in the disputed territory.The bills’ approval in their initial readings highlighted Netanyahu’s dissipating control over his fractious right-wing coalition, a development that is especially significant as Israel counts down to its next parliamentary elections, scheduled no later than next October.The prime minister worked hard to prevent the bills’ advance. His coalition’s ministerial committee had refused to support another such bill three days earlier. He knew the legislation risked annoying the Trump administration, especially with Vance visiting. A day later, party chairman and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir threatened to stop voting with the coalition in the coming weeks unless it backs legislation imposing a death penalty on terrorists.Ben Gvir, who voted against the ceasefire in Gaza when it came before the cabinet on October 9, has also threatened to bolt the coalition unless the prime minister recommits to dismantling Hamas.Supporting last week’s annexation vote thus served as a warning to Netanyahu not to take his party’s backing for granted while also signaling to Otzma Yehudit voters that their MKs remain loyal to their ideological commitments.A spokesman for the party told The Times of Israel that it “votes according to ideology and according to the voters,” while faction MK Yitzhak Kroizer said that Otzma Yehudit “sees the application of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria not as a political move but as a value-driven, Zionist, and historical step that expresses our natural and divine right to the land.”“This is not an attempt to ‘apply political pressure,’ but a clear statement: sovereignty is not an election slogan; it is fundamental. The public expects courage, action and not delays from its leaders,” Kroizer said.As for Religious Zionism’s support for the Maoz bill, this too was motivated by its pro-annexation, pro-settlement ideology. But the party, led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, also desperately needs to boost its support to ensure it maintains its place in the Knesset come election day. Religious Zionism is one of several parties polling around the 3.25 percent electoral threshold, beneath which lies Knesset oblivion.In a lengthy social media post over the weekend, Smotrich, who last month called to annex most of the West Bank, urged supporters of annexation to adopt the tactics of the movement to free the hostages in Gaza, including weekly rallies, annexation pins, and roadside banners.Speaking with The Times of Israel last week, Motti Babchik, a senior adviser to Goldknopf, said that the ultra-Orthodox Agudat Yisrael faction, for its part, supported Maoz’s bill to highlight the hypocrisy of the Netanyahu government, of which it was a member until recently, many of whose ministers have recently called for annexation.UTJ is also furious at Netanyahu for failing to pass a bill enshrining the exemption of yeshiva students from military service. And the ultra-Orthodox party’s Agudat Yisrael faction, in particular, is said to be concerned about some of its younger voters switching their allegiance to Otzma Yehudit.Fellow ultra-Orthodox party Shas, which recently withdrew from all coalition roles it holds in the Knesset while remaining a part of the coalition, stayed away from the plenum last week rather than voting against the bill — itself a signal of discontent with Netanyahu.‘The opposition dictated the agenda’The more limited annexation bill, aimed at applying sovereignty to the settlement of Ma’ale Adumim near Jerusalem, sponsored by Yisrael Beytenu’s Liberman, advanced by a far wider margin, 32-9.Both Opposition Leader Yair Lapid and Blue and White party chairman Benny Gantz voted in favor of Liberman’s bill, which received support only from opposition, rather than coalition, parties. Many Blue and White and Yesh Atid MKs voted in favor, as did members of Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu.According to Yesh Atid MK Vladimir Beliak, Ma’ale Adumim is part of the national consensus and will remain part of Israel under any eventual peace plan. Therefore, he said, voting in favor of annexation of the settlement-city “fully aligns with our platform, so there was no issue there. And if along the way it also helps shake up the coalition — all the better.”Dismissing the possibility that the vote could cause diplomatic issues down the line, Beliak said there was “no chance [that the legislation] will advance,” adding that American anger was directed at the coalition, which had failed to block the bill’s advance.“So it only shows that the coalition is disintegrating,” he added.Speaking with The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity soon after the vote, an opposition source boasted that “the opposition dictated the agenda today, caused cracks in the coalition, showed how weak the prime minister is, and made it clear to everyone that there is a minority government in Israel. And that’s the job of an opposition.”Lapid echoed this sentiment over the weekend, telling Channel 12 that the opposition had sent the Americans the message that “Netanyahu has lost control of the Knesset and has lost control of the government.”“I didn’t embarrass the Americans. I embarrassed Benjamin Netanyahu,” asserted Lapid. “He has no control, and therefore we have to go to elections,” he added.Parliamentary deadlock-When Maoz quit the coalition in the summer, he indeed deprived Netanyahu’s coalition of its Knesset majority, leaving it with only 60 of the 120 seats. This, together with Ben Gvir’s unreliability and an ongoing Haredi legislative boycott over the stalled legislation of its desired IDF service exemption, has made it hard for the coalition to advance its agenda since the Knesset opened its winter session last week.This inability to advance coalition bills became obvious last Wednesday morning, when all private member bills sponsored by coalition lawmakers were removed from the Knesset agenda. Kurdish PKK says withdrawing all forces from Turkey to north Iraq.

Qandil Mountains, Iraq, Oct 26 (AFP) Oct 26, 2025-The Kurdish militant PKK began withdrawing all of its forces from Turkish soil to northern Iraq on Sunday, while urging Ankara to release its jailed leader to ensure the success of the peace process.The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) formally renounced its armed struggle against Turkey in May, drawing a line under four decades of violence that had claimed some 50,000 lives."We are implementing the withdrawal of all our forces within Turkey," the PKK said in a statement read out in Kurdish and Turkish in a remote village in the Qandil Mountains of northern Iraq, according to an AFP journalist present.Standing in front of large banners of jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan were 25 fighters carrying assault rifles -- among them three commanders -- whom the PKK said had just left Turkey. Washington, Oct 27 (AFP) Oct 27, 2025-Two US Navy aircraft crashed into the South China Sea in separate incidents on Sunday, officials said, with no fatalities reported.The first crash involved a MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, which "went down in the waters of the South China Sea while conducting routine operations from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz," according to a statement from the US Navy's Pacific Fleet.All three crew members aboard the helicopter were recovered by search and rescue teams, the statement said.A half-hour later, according to the Navy, a Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet crashed into the South China Sea, also "while conducting routine operations" from the USS Nimitz.The Navy's statement said both crew members aboard ejected themselves from the vessel and were safely recovered."All personnel involved are safe and in stable condition," the US Navy said. "The cause of both incidents is currently under investigation."The crashes come as US President Donald Trump is in the region, on his first visit to Asia of his second term, and as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth prepares to also begin a multi-country Asian tour.Earlier this year, two US warplanes fell off the US Navy's Harry S. Venezuela says US military exercises on nearby island a 'provocation'.

State prosecutors filed charges Sunday against three Turkish citizens accused of smuggling guns into Israel and entering the country illegally. One of the defendants, Oktay Asci, was also charged with providing the means to commit a terrorist act.The three were part of a larger arms trafficking network run by a Turkish national residing outside of the country, who in 2023 helped smuggle Asci into Israel to work in construction, prosecutors said.Members of the network purchased firearms from an Iranian arms dealer and smuggled them into Jordan, from where they were then spirited into Israel by workers entering the country, apparently in an effort to arm terrorists within Israel and the West Bank.The Shin Bet has warned in the past that Iran, particularly over the course of the recent war with Hamas, has been engaged in an ongoing effort to undermine Israeli security by smuggling guns into the country, with the aim of arming terror cells.According to the charges filed, Asci had joined the arms trafficking ring before he was deported in July 2025, after spending some two and a half years in the country. He recruited the other two defendants, Younes Ozel and Rahman Gokyer, earlier this year.Following his deportation, Asci tried in September to return alongside the second defendant, Gokyer, in order to partake in the gun-trafficking ring from within the country.Both Asci and Gokyer were to receive and then sell the guns within Israel, both were promised $1 million as compensation from the Turkish ringleader. The pair tried to hop the security fence with Jordan near Kibbutz Shaar Hagolan near the Golan Heights, but were nabbed by IDF forces.They had initially planned to bring three handguns with them into the country, but came empty-handed after a dispute between the arms dealers, the prosecution said.Ozel was also staying illegally in Israel as a construction worker, and was enlisted by Asci as a middleman. He went to the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station twice to carry out arms deals. He was to collect money from a shop at the station, then exchange it with an unknown person in return for the weapons.The dealer failed to arrive on both occasions. Ozel pocketed the NIS 5,000 ($1,500) for himself. He was arrested separately from the other two, also in September this year, police said.The three were interrogated by investigators in the police’s Lahav 433 major crimes unit as part of a joint investigation conducted by the police, Shin Bet and IDF.The three were indicted Sunday at the Nazareth District Court, and prosecutors requested they remain in custody until the end of legal proceedings.Weapons smuggling has posed a challenge to Israeli authorities, particularly along the border with Jordan, much of which lacks significant fencing compared to the more heavily-guarded borders with Egypt, Lebanon and Syria.Earlier in October, the Shin Bet announced it had foiled an Iranian-linked attempt to smuggle a large quantity of weapons to West Bank terror operatives. After arresting and interrogating an arms dealer in Ramallah, they were able to connect the plot to units in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ special forces.

Two Hezbollah operatives were killed in Israeli drone strikes in Lebanon on Sunday, the military said, amid an uptick in attacks on the terror group.The strikes came as Defense Minister Israel Katz toured the Lebanon border with US Deputy Envoy to the Middle East Morgan Ortagus.The first strike, near the southern Lebanon town of Naqoura, killed Abd a-Sayed, who the military said served as Hezbollah’s local representative in the nearby village of Ras al-Bayada.As part of his role, a-Sayed was responsible for liaising between the terror group and the residents “on economic and military matters,” the Israel Defense Forces said.The IDF said a-Sayed was also involved in efforts to restore Hezbollah military capabilities in the village.The second strike near the village of Nabi Chit in the eastern Beqaa Valley killed Ali Hussein al-Mousawi, who the IDF said was a weapons smuggler for the terror group.The IDF said that as part of his role, “he handled the purchasing and transfer of weapons from Syria to Lebanon,” and he also “played a significant role in the reestablishment and strengthening of Hezbollah.”“Throughout the past year, the terrorist has continuously smuggled weapons for Hezbollah,” the military said.Lebanese authorities also reported two dead in the strikes.Katz’s office said IDF commanders briefed the defense minister and the US Mideast envoy on the strikes targeting the two Hezbollah operatives during their tour of the border.Also joining the tour were US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter, Northern Command chief Maj. A transnational terror network run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force is behind a string of recent attacks on Jewish sites in Western countries, the Mossad intelligence agency said on Sunday.According to Israel’s spy agency, senior IRGC-Quds Force commander Sardar Ammar heads the network, which intensified its efforts to attack Jewish and Israeli sites around the world since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on southern Israel.Ammar commands some 11,000 operatives in carrying out covert operations, Mossad alleged.The network carried out vandalism and arson attacks against Jewish businesses and communal institutions, Mossad said, “aiming to intimidate communities and create conditions that could lead to more serious attacks.”Sardar’s network also planned attacks against senior Jewish communal figures, it said.Mossad pointed to three particular incidents tied to the network, among several more it uncovered in cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies.In July 2024, Greece’s anti-terrorism police arrested seven people, including two Iranians, over separate arson attacks against an Israeli-owned hotel and a synagogue in central Athens earlier that year.In July of this year, German prosecutors said that Danish police had arrested a man suspected of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence. He spied on three properties in June, “presumably in preparation for further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets,” prosecutors said.The next month, Australia blamed Iran for involvement in two 2024 arson attacks, at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher restaurant in Sydney, using criminals and members of organized crime gangs. It marked the first time Australia has expelled an ambassador since World War II.In order to hide Iran’s involvement, Mossad said, the network recruited non-Iranians, used criminal gangs, and insisted on a high degree of compartmentalization.The attacks were generally seen by intelligence agencies as amateurish and bumbling, The Times of Israel has been told. A child who went outside to bathe in the rain in Santo Domingo may have been swept into the sea, Garcia said, and a search was underway.About 90 residents have evacuated from Saona Island, off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, as a precaution due to the storm, the country’s Civil Defense agency announced on Facebook Saturday.The Guantánamo Province’s government has ordered the evacuation of 145,000 people in eastern Cuba. At least 3 people have been killed in Haiti as Tropical Storm Melissa causes devastating flooding in the Caribbean, and meteorologists warn the storm could become a Category 4 hurricane.The National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of "life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides" throughout the weekend in Jamaica and southern Hispaniola, the island that comprises Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It will bring up to 14 inches of rain in the coming days and potentially the same amount to Jamaica, the NHC said.11 million people are facing flood watches today from northern Oklahoma to central Texas. Two of the cities included in the watches are Oklahoma City and Dallas.Haiti Displaced-The severe storm and flood risk will shift east into southeastern Texas and western Louisiana on Saturday."The rainfall is a huge risk with the storm," said Michael Brennan, director of the NHC. "Rainfall has historically been the biggest cause of loss of life of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Caribbean."In an 11 a.m. ET update on Friday, the NHC said the storm is drifting east-southeastward at 2 MPH. At the time of the update, the storm was 215 miles south-east of Kingston, the Jamaican capital, and 250 miles south-west of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.A hurricane watch is in place, and a tropical storm warning is in place for Jamaica and the southwestern peninsula of Haiti.The Haitian Civil Protection Agency said that two people died Thursday in a landslide in Fontamara, a suburb of Port-au-Prince. Earlier, the agency said a man in his 70s was killed by a falling tree in the southern coastal town of Marigot, while five people were injured in the Artibonite region.Already, dozens of water supply systems are offline in the Dominican Republic, affecting more than 500,000 customers, with downed trees and traffic lights causing disruption.“This is an event that we should be following minute by minute,” said Juan Manuel Méndez García, emergency operations director in the Dominican Republic.The storm is due to drift west on Saturday and could move on to, or just south of, Jamaica early next week.The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 and Melissa is the 13th named storm of the season so far.Patrick Smith.
