RUSSIA,GERMANY, ARAB MUSLIMS COME AGAINST ISRAEL.
EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2
Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA)
the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy
against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against
thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and
Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into
thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee
forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with
all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields,
all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6
Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of
the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with
thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and
prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto
thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be
visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is
brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against
the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is
brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of
them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a
cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with
thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall
also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy
mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt
say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled
villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely,
all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12
To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine
hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the
people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle
and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13 Sheba, and
Dedan,(SAUDI-ARABIA) and the merchants of Tarshish,(SPAIN) with all the
young lions thereof,(ENGLAND,AND ALL ITS ASSOCIATES-CANADA,AUSTRALIA-NEW
ZEALAND, USA, AND WESTERN ENGLISH SPEAKING NATIONS) shall say unto
thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to
take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and
goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY
RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14 Therefore, son of man,
prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my
people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15 And
thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many
people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a
mighty army:
16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel,
as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I
will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I
shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17 Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my
servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many
years that I would bring thee against them?
18 And it shall come to
pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel,
saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19 For in
my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken,
Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20
So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the
beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth,
and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my
presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places
shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will
call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord
GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will
plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with
blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many
people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones,
fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS

23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I
will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am
the LORD.
EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man,
prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord
GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech
(MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee
back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of
thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will
cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee
upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,(
ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the
ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be
devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6
And I will send a shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto
Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley
of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east
of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there
shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE)
and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300
MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13
Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it
shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified,
saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual
employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to
bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth,
to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15
And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s
bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the
buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of
Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN
THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17
And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every
feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY
SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and
come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do
sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel,
that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM
ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood
of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of
bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye (MIGRATING BIRDS
IN ISRAEL) shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be
drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for
you.(RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS)
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21
And I (GOD-JESUS) will set my glory among the heathen,(WORLD NATIONS)
and all the heathen (WORLD NATIONS) shall see my judgment that I have
executed,(AGAINST ISRAELS ENEMIES) and my (GODS) hand that I have laid
upon them.(ISRAELS HATER ENEMIES)
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23
And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity
for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I
my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so
fell they all by the sword.
24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity
of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be
jealous for my holy name;
26 After that they have borne their shame,
and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when
they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27 When I
have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their
enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28
Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to
be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto
their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29
Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my
spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

'When Saudi
Arabia goes in, everybody goes in'Trump claims Saudis told him
‘yesterday’ they’re willing to join Abraham Accords-While Riyadh has
insisted that it needs pathway to Palestinian state, US president
reiterates that normalization deals will soon pile up now that Gaza war
over, Iran threat neutered-By Jacob Magid-and Lazar Berman-Today, 5:12
pm-OCT 17,25
US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that
Saudi officials indicated to him “as recently as yesterday” that they’re
willing to join the Abraham Accords, which he expects will be expanded
“soon.”Trump reiterated his belief that Arab and Muslim countries will
be able to normalize relations with Israel now that a ceasefire has been
reached in Gaza and the Iranian nuclear threat has been neutered.“I
hope to see Saudi Arabia go in, and I hope to see others go in. I think
when Saudi Arabia goes in, everybody goes in,” Trump told Fox News.Asked
if Saudi officials have indicated to him a willingness to do so, Trump
responded, “They have. Even as recently as, like, yesterday. I had some
very good conversations.”It’s unclear whether Trump actually spoke
directly with Saudi officials. Earlier this week, Trump told reporters,
“I spoke to Hamas, and I said, ‘You’re going to disarm, right?’ ‘Yes,
sir. We’re going to disarm.’”Surprised that he was holding direct
conversations with Hamas, a reporter pressed him on the matter and Trump
acknowledged that the message was passed along by his “people.”Saudi
Arabia has repeatedly stated that it will not normalize relations with
Israel unless Jerusalem agrees to establish a credible, time-bound,
irreversible path to the creation of a Palestinian state.Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu did verbally agree to Trump’s 20-point peace plan
that states, “While Gaza re-development advances and when the PA reform
program is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in
place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and
statehood, which we recognize as the aspiration of the Palestinian
people.”The plan’s final point states that the “US will establish a
dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a political
horizon for peaceful and prosperous co-existence.”But in the speech
unveiling the plan, Trump recognized Netanyahu’s “understandable”
opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state and has later said
that he hasn’t made a decision on whether he backs a two-state solution —
without which Saudi Arabia will not join the Abraham Accords. Moreover,
the deal actually signed by Israel and Hamas in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt,
last week did not include the second half of Trump’s plan that focused
on a potential two-state solution.Still, Trump has been bullish about
the chances for expanding the Abraham Accords now that the Gaza
ceasefire is in place.“I don’t want to use the word immediate, but
soon,” he told Fox News.He hailed the countries that already signed on
in 2020, noting that they did so “courageous[ly]” while Iran was a much
stronger regional power, before the US and Israeli strikes on its
nuclear program in June 2025.Trump acknowledged the Saudi resistance to
normalizing ties with Israel when he visited the Gulf kingdom in May,
telling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, “You’ll do it at your own
time.”“They couldn’t have done it during the war. They couldn’t have
done it with the fight that was going on with Iran,” Trump told Fox News
on Friday. For a short while earlier this week, it appeared that
Indonesia was going to be the first country to join the Abraham Accords
since the end of the Gaza war, as its Prabowo Subianto weighed a
historic visit to Israel on Tuesday after a summit of world leaders on
Gaza in Sharm el-Sheikh.But shortly after the plan was leaked to the
press on Monday, Subianto’s office issued a fierce denial that such a
trip had even been planned. The Indonesian leader also made headlines
with his speech at the UN General Assembly last month in which he
asserted that the world must respect Israel’s right to live in security,
and concluded his remarks with, “Shalom.”Witkoff: Future for Gaza must
include jobs, education, hope, aspirations-US special envoy Steve
Witkoff also expressed optimism, as he has in the past, about “seriously
expanding” the Abraham Accords on Thursday. He said the US was committed
to giving Gazans a better life now that the war is over, but appeared
to stop short of committing to ensuring that that new life would include
self-determination.“Israel should never have to live under the threat
of rockets flying at its people or the fear of terrorist attacks. But
Gazan people must be able to live a decent life as well, or there won’t
be a possibility for long-term peace,” Witkoff said in remarks at an
event at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington commemorating
the second anniversary of Hamas’s October 7 onslaught.“Only when
extremism ends can prosperity begin. Peace in the region will save
countless lives of Israelis and Gazans alike, and bring dignity to those
who have suffered for far too long,” Witkoff said, pledging to quickly
expand the Abraham Accords.Witkoff reiterated that “Hamas must
unequivocally disarm, and they can have no future in Gaza; no future as
they have been” — appearing to leave open the possibility that the US
would accept Hamas remaining in the Strip if it undergoes an ideological
transformation. He went on to recall his two trips to Gaza over the past
year.“Each time I wear my black MAGA [hat], people come up to me on the
Gaza side because they want peace too,” Witkoff continued.“They want
stability, opportunity, a better life for their children. A future for
Gazans must include jobs, education, hope, aspirations — not just guns
and violence,” he said.Witkoff touted the integral role that the US
president played in securing a ceasefire last week that has seen the
release of all remaining living hostages.“President Trump understands
something most leaders forget — that moral clarity without strength
means nothing, and it is that combination of conviction and power that
has saved lives,” the US envoy asserted.
Saudi Arabia, US
reportedly discussing defense deal similar to Qatar defense
pact-Financial Times reports agreement to be signed when Saudi Crown
Prince Mohammed Bin Salman visits Washington next month-By Reuters and
ToI Staff Today, 2:20 pm-OCT 17,25
Saudi Arabia is discussing a
defense deal with the United States that it hopes to seal when Crown
Prince Mohammed bin Salman visits the White House next month, the
Financial Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed people familiar with
the matter.A senior official in US President Donald Trump’s
administration told the British outlet that there were “discussions
about signing something when the crown prince comes, but the details are
in flux.”The FT said the deal under discussion was similar to the
recent US-Qatar pact that pledged to treat any armed attack on Qatar as a
threat to the United States. The US deal with Qatar came after Israel
last month attempted to kill leaders of Hamas with an airstrike on
Doha.Several lower-level members of the Palestinian terrorist group and a
Qatari guard were killed in the attack, which failed to kill the key
Hamas leaders it was targeting. The US State Department told the FT that
defense cooperation with the kingdom was a “strong bedrock of our
regional strategy,” but declined to comment on details of the potential
deal. The US State Department, the White House and the Saudi government
did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on the FT report.Saudi
Arabia has long sought guarantees similar to the Qatar deal as part of
Washington’s efforts to normalize relations between Riyadh and Israel.
These efforts were stalled by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel
that started the war in Gaza, and Prince Mohammed has since said any
normalization with Israel would be conditional on a Palestinian state,
which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heavily opposes. In May, Trump
dropped demands that Saudi Arabia normalize ties with Israel as part of
nuclear cooperation talks. The condition was a major sticking point for
former US president Joe Biden, who had been overseeing the talks during
his term.Last month, Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defense pact with
nuclear-armed Pakistan that said an attack on either country would be
considered an attack on both.
Who are the Palestinian Prisoners Freed in the Israel-Hamas Deal?-Eli Biton Murder-October 17, 2025
Update:
Since the release of the 20 surviving hostages on October 13, and nine
of the 28 deceased hostages, and Israel has released 2,058 Palestinian
prisoners in exchange for the hostages.Background-On October 10, Israel
released the names of 250 Palestinian security prisoners slated for
release under the U.S.-backed Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal and began
notifying families whose loved ones’ killers are set to go free.
Approved by the Israeli cabinet on October 9, the list includes members
of Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Fatah, and the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), all responsible for dozens of deadly
attacks. Key figures demanded by Hamas, including Marwan Barghouti—the
mastermind of the Second Intifada serving five life sentences—are
excluded. The release is part of the first phase of a broader hostage and
ceasefire agreement negotiated under the 20-Point Peace Plan, brokered
by the United States and supported by regional partners. Under the
agreement, Israel will exchange more than 1,950 Palestinian prisoners,
including 250 who are serving life sentences for deadly attacks, as well
as 1,700 Palestinians arrested since October 7, 2023, for the remaining
48 hostages in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive. Breakdown of
Releases-Of the 250 prisoners, 15 will be released to East Jerusalem,
100 to the West Bank, and 135—convicted of murder or weapons
offenses—are set for deportation to Gaza or elsewhere. In addition,
1,700 Gazans detained after—but not involved in—the Hamas-led October 7
attack will be freed, either returning to the Strip or exiled
abroad.High-Profile Prisoners Remain Excluded-Prominent terrorists not
included are Barghouti, Ahmad Sa’adat, Ibrahim Hamed, Abbas al-Sayed,
and Hassan Salameh. Hamas continues to insist that Barghouti’s release
is central to negotiations, highlighting his broad appeal among
Palestinians and potential role in future Palestinian Authority
leadership.Prominent prisoners slated for release:Imad Qawasmeh, 52
(Hamas) – convicted for the 2004 Beersheva bus bombing that killed 16
Israelis; designated for deportation-Qassem Aref Khalil al-Asafreh, 36

Palestinian collaborator; will remain in West Bank-Raad Abd al-Aziz, 45
(Fatah) – convicted of murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses;
designated for deportation-Omar Mahmoud Bassis, 60 (Palestinian Islamic
Jihad) – responsible for explosives attacks during Second Intifada;
designated for release-Arafat Hamid Zir, 43 (Islamic Jihad) – convicted

Jenin; responsible for suicide bombings; deported-Alaa al-Din al-Karki,
52 (Hamas) – jailed since 1993 for multiple attacks; deported-Prominent
terrorists not included in the release:Marwan Barghouti – Fatah leader,
Tanzim chief jailed for multiple murders; central to Hamas
negotiations.Ahmad Sa’adat – Secretary-General of the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine.Ibrahim Hamed – Hamas West Bank commander;
serving 45 life terms for killings during the Second Intifada.Abbas
al-Sayed – Orchestrated the 2002 Park Hotel bombing in Netanya, killing
39 Israelis.Hassan Salameh – Hamas operative; serving 48 life terms for
multiple suicide bombings.Palestinian Prisoners Released in January 2025
Hostage and Ceasefire Deal-As part of the first phase of the
U.S.-backed January 2025 Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, Israel
exchanged more than 1,900 Palestinian security prisoners for 33 hostages
still held in Gaza over 42 days. Among those released were 737
detainees and security prisoners, many serving life sentences for
murder, as well as over 1,000 Gazans detained for alleged ties to Hamas.
All releases were contingent on Hamas freeing the remaining
hostages. The exchange included Palestinian prisoners held prior to
October 7, 2023, alongside 47 Palestinians re-arrested after the 2011
Gilad Shalit deal. Most of the Palestinians released were Gazans
detained during Israeli operations to remove Hamas elements or
influence, while a portion were convicted of past terror attacks.Notable
terrorists slated for release included:Zakaria Zubeidi, former Jenin
commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, involved in shootings and a
bombing that killed six people at a 2002 polling station;Iyad Jradat and
Ahmed Dahiri, PIJ operatives responsible for terror attacks in
2003;Mahmoud Atallah, serving life plus 15 years for killing a
Palestinian woman suspected of collaboration, and recently indicted for
sexual abuse;Wael Qissam, Wissam Abbasi, and Muhammad Odeh, Hamas Silwan
Squadron members behind five bombings in 2002 that killed 35 and
wounded hundreds;Ahmed Barghouti, operational commander of Al-Aqsa
Martyrs’ Brigades, tied to multiple deadly attacks; Khalida Jarrar, PFLP
lawmaker convicted of multiple terror acts, including a 2019 bombing
killing a 17-year-old girl;Khalil Jabarin, who murdered Ari Fuld in
2018;Mohammed Abu Warda, responsible for the 1996 Jerusalem bus bombing
killing 44 and Ashkelon attack;Ismail Radideh, Force 17 member,
convicted of multiple murders and plots;Ashraf Abu-Srour, convicted for
killing IDF soldier Shahar Vekart in 2000.This unprecedented prisoner
swap marked the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal,
highlighting the complex trade-offs Israel navigated to secure the
release of hostages while managing security and political implications.

Goldin's brother: 'The gov't is burying the hostages'‘War of Revival’:
Cabinet to vote on Netanyahu proposal to rename Gaza war-Critics say
proposal to rename ‘Swords of Iron’ is an attempt to avoid
responsibility for the events of October 7, for which the prime minister
has never taken responsibility-By Ariela Karmel-Today, 11:41 pm-OCT

The cabinet will vote on Sunday to officially rename the
war against Hamas and Iran’s proxies, “War of Revival,” Hebrew media
reported on Friday. The proposal, brought forward by Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, would replace the
current name, “Swords of Iron,” which was announced by the Israel
Defense Forces on the day of the Hamas onslaught on October 7, 2023,
shortly after the premier’s declaration that Israel was at war.Despite
its formal name, many in Israel refer to the conflict as the “October 7
war.”Critics have suggested that the government’s proposed name is part
of an attempt to evade responsibility for any failures that occurred
ahead of October 7, 2023, and on the day itself.Despite receiving
several warnings by the security establishment in the years and months
before October 7, Netanyahu has avoided taking responsibility for the
massacre, repeatedly asserting that the security establishment — not
political leaders — failed to prevent the deadliest attack in Israel’s
history. He has also refused to authorize a state commission of inquiry
into the failures surrounding October 7.Opposition chairman Yair Lapid
blasted the Netanyahu-led effort, tweeting, “You want revival? Start
with a simple thing: ask for forgiveness.”Tzur Goldin, whose brother
Hadar Goldin was killed in Gaza in 2014 and whose body has been held by
Hamas since, wrote on X that “it is forbidden to hold discussions about
the name of the war, medal ceremonies, or any other event that seeks to
wrap up the war until all the hostages are here.”By trying to rename the
war now, “The government is burying the hostages — in two senses. Just
like what happened in Operation Protective Edge (2014),” Goldin wrote,
referencing the operation during which his brother was killed and
kidnapped.Netanyahu first suggested the name “War of Revival” a year ago
at a cabinet meeting to mark the first anniversary of the start of the
conflict, saying, “This is the war of our existence — the ‘War of
Revival.’”In December, the Kan public broadcaster reported that
Netanyahu was looking at various alternative titles for the war,
including the “Genesis War,” “Gaza War,” and “Simhat Torah War.”While
military operations fought by Israel have often been given names such as
Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021 or Operation Protective
Edge in 2014, formally recognized wars are given more straightforward
names, such as the Six Day War in 1967, the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and
the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
'I feel like my soul is lost amid
all this destruction'-Following ceasefire, Gazans hold first mass
Friday prayers in damaged mosques-Week after truce began, Palestinians
gather across Strip for 1st organized prayers in months; Worshiper:
‘Mosque near my home was our refuge, not only for prayer, but to find
peace, remember God’By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 11:30 pm-OCT 17,25
Thousands
of worshipers returned on Friday to the Gaza Strip’s few intact and
many damaged mosques, where for the first time in months, loudspeakers
blared the Islamic call to prayer.“God is the greatest, glory to God,
Lord of worlds,” echoed through those mosques at roughly the same time
on Friday, one week after a ceasefire took place in the devoutly Muslim
coastal Palestinian territory.Monday’s exchange of hostages for
Palestinian prisoners marked the first phase of a 20-point plan to end
the war. However, the bodies of 19 hostages were still being held in
Gaza as of Friday evening, and it remains unclear whether Hamas will
adhere to calls to disarm, with Israel warning it will resume fighting
if the group fails to do so.To be united for prayer again “is an
indescribable feeling after two years of privation,” Ghalid al-Nimra
told AFP at Gaza City’s Sayed Hachem mosque.Sayed Hachem, one of the
oldest mosques in Gaza’s largest city, was miraculously mostly spared
during two years of air strikes and fighting between Israel and Hamas. As
he watched the hundreds of worshipers, Nimra was moved to see “such a
large crowd gathered here” for the first time since October 7, when
Hamas orchestrated a mass invasion of southern Israel, murdering 1,200
people and kidnapping 251, sparking Israel’s longest-ever war.As the
prayer rang out at 12:30 pm (0930 GMT), many hastened as they crossed
the building’s Ottoman-era door.Old and young, many of their faces
solemn, prayed together inside, where even the minbar, the imam’s raised
platform, seemed intact.Out of Gaza’s 1,244 mosques, 1,160 were partly
or wholly destroyed, according to Hamas’s media office in the
Palestinian territory. While mosques and other religious buildings are
protected under international law, they can be targeted if they are used
for military purposes. The IDF has accused Hamas of embedding itself in
civilian infrastructure, including mosques.Dispersed prayer-Several
worshipers expressed a state of spiritual confusion.“I feel like my soul
is getting lost amid all this destruction,” Abu Mahmud Salha told
AFP.The 52-year-old from northern Gaza still lives in a camp for the
displaced in Al-Mawasi, on the other end of the Gaza Strip.“We pray
inside the tent, I miss group prayer and the imam’s voice,” he
said.“When I hear the prayer call echoing on loudspeakers from
recordings, I feel like a part of our lives was broken.”The mosque in
his neighborhood, al-Falluja, was destroyed, forcing him to pray on the
street. On Friday, most residents stuck to the habits they developed over
the past few months. Some unfurled prayer mats on the road, on rubble,
or in mosques with collapsed walls.Others bowed near rows of tents
housing thousands of displaced Palestinians across Gaza, in living
conditions that remain difficult.“Every Friday, we try to gather on a
small patch of land under the sky, to pray,” Moataz Abu Sharbi told
AFP.“Sometimes we pray on sand or on pieces of cardboard, which is very
difficult psychologically,” the 27-year-old added.“The mosque was a
pillar of life in our neighbourhoods and a precious part of our
religious traditions,” said Abu Sharbi, who was displaced to the central
Gaza city of Deir al-Balah.“Losing both one’s home and one’s spiritual
refuge — that’s the hardest part,” Abu Sharbi added.“We used to find
shelter for our worries in the mosque.”Rebuilding-Speaking from Gaza
City’s Al-Shati camp, Abu Mohammad al-Hattabn said “the mosque near my
home was our refuge, not only for prayer, but also to find peace and
remember God.”“When it was destroyed, it felt like a piece of my heart
flew away,” the 54-year-old said.Hundreds of Palestinians also gathered
in a destroyed mosque in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, an AFP
photographer reported. As an imam led prayers through a loudspeaker, the
worshipers seemed absorbed in devotion, despite the mosque’s gaping
walls and exposed frame.“We hope that everything will be rebuilt in
Gaza, including the mosques,” 22-year-old Salim al-Farra said. The
Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 67,000 people in the Strip
were killed in the war, though the toll does not differentiate between
civilians and combatants.Israel says it has killed over 22,000
combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside
Israel during the Hamas-led October 7 onslaught. Israeli officials have
placed the civilian-to-combatant ratio at roughly two to one.Israel’s
toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military
operations along the border with the Strip stands at 473.
Poll
gives Trump approval bump over Gaza truce, but Americans still unhappy
at home-More US adults back Trump’s handling of Israel-Hamas conflict,
yet his ratings on economy, health care, and immigration remain deeply
underwater, survey indicates-By AP Today, 11:20 pm-OCT 17,25
WASHINGTON
— More American adults support US President Donald Trump’s handling of
Gaza war after he brokered a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas,
but his approval ratings on domestic issues remain weak, according to a
poll released Friday. The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center
for Public Affairs Research reveals that Trump’s apparent success on the
world stage has not yet improved his overall standing at home. In
interviews, even some of his voters said he needs to do more to address
issues such as the economy, health care and immigration.“It’s kind of
cool he’s bringing peace, but I’m like, ‘You kind of need to worry about
your American people instead of bringing peace to the world first,’”
said Justin Sanders, a 31-year-old Republican from Birmingham, Alabama,
who voted twice for Trump.“We need the inflation to go down,” added
Sanders, who works as a driver for DoorDash. “I’m tired of sitting here
struggling going day by day trying to figure out if I’m going to eat or
not.”The poll was conducted Oct. 9-13 — after the ceasefire was
announced but before the hostage-prisoner exchange took place later on
October 13.The tenuous ceasefire in Gaza has held this week, even as
major questions remain about the US plan for the region and whether the
peace can be sustained. At the same time, Trump faces major hurdles at
home with a US government shutdown now in its third week, prices
remaining too high for many Americans and millions more impacted by
health care cuts and hospital closures. In the new poll, about four in 10
US adults approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president
overall, unchanged from September.Trump’s approval on
Israeli-Palestinian conflict rises-About half of US adults, 47%, approve
of how Trump is handling the conflict between the Israelis and the
Palestinians. That’s an increase from 37% in September, and it’s driven
primarily by Democrats viewing Trump more positively on this issue.Jack
Bornstein, of Alpharetta, Georgia, a 61-year-old independent who
typically votes for Democrats, said he was pleased the Israeli hostages
were released as part of the deal Trump helped negotiate.“I give him
credit for that. That’s probably the only thing I can say is positive
for him,” Bornstein said, pointing to concerns about rising grocery
prices, health care and Trump’s character. However, separate AP-NORC
polling from July indicates that Americans are much more likely to say
domestic issues — such as the economy, health care, taxes, government
spending and immigration — are “extremely” or “very” important to them
as compared with the situation in the Middle East.In the July poll, only
about 4 in 10 said the Middle East was at least “very” important to
them personally, compared with about 9 in 10 who said that about the
economy. Most disapprove of Trump’s handling of economy, immigration,
health care-On domestic issues, Americans don’t believe that Trump is
doing particularly well — even on immigration, a signature issue for the
Republican president.About 4 in 10 US adults approve of the way Trump
is handling immigration, which is in line with his September measure,
but down slightly from the beginning of his second term.On the economy,
the chief concern for many, only about one-third of US adults approve of
Trump’s performance. The figure has stayed steady throughout his second
term. One of Trump’s weakest issues is health care, a topic that’s taken
center stage during the ongoing government shutdown.About 3 in 10 US
adults approve of Trump’s leadership on health care, in line with
September. Almost all Democrats disapprove of his work on health care,
but so do about 8 in 10 independents and about one-third of
Republicans.Alison Weaver, a 62-year-old independent from Roanoke,
Virginia, said Trump’s second term has been “a debacle.”She criticized
his “Gestapo tactics” on immigration and laughed out loud when asked
about his performance on health care.“It’s horrifying,” Weaver said. Most
say the country is going in the wrong direction-Trump’s domestic
challenges come on the eve of a new election season in which voters in
New Jersey and Virginia will elect new governors next month, while
several other states will host municipal elections.Trump’s weak numbers
could create problems for Republican candidates who have been wary of
distancing themselves from the GOP president. The new poll might also
raise concerns for incumbents in either party, since about 7 in 10 US
adults say things in this country are heading in the wrong
direction. That’s down slightly from September, shortly after
conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, when about
three-quarters of Americans said the country was going in the wrong
direction. Republicans are less likely to say the country is headed in
the wrong direction than they were last month, returning closer to
levels before Kirk’s assassination. Democrats and independents have not
changed significantly.Dean Grace, a 73-year-old Democrat from Duluth,
Minnesota, said he has very few positive things to say about Trump.“I
will give him some credit for the ceasefire, although claiming peace in
the Middle East is a stretch,” he said. “My issues are that, as a
Christian, I find nothing to agree with my president about morally.”
Analysis-Israel
hopes Gaza ceasefire will bring end to wartime international
isolation-2 in 3 Israelis worry about country’s standing, after global
outcry over humanitarian toll of campaign against Hamas; as fighting
stops, officials hope reputation can bounce back-By Reuters and ToI
Staff Today, 10:23 am-OCT 17,25
The ceasefire in Gaza is raising
hopes among many in Israel that the country can begin to repair its
image abroad, after months of deepening isolation due to the toll of the
two-year conflict.Public opinion in the West has shifted significantly
since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, in which
terrorists killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, triggered the
subsequent war in the Strip.Amid outcry about offensive’s humanitarian
cost, several Western nations have publicly recognized a Palestinian
state in recent months – despite staunch opposition from Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the United States.Foreign polls have
shown weakening support for Israel’s military campaign, even in its
most important ally, the United States.More than 67,000 Palestinians
have been killed in Gaza, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run health
authorities, which don’t distinguish between civilians and combatants,
and whose toll is unconfirmed. Israel estimates it has killed some
22,000 combatants in Gaza as of August, as well as some 1,600 inside
Israel on and immediately following the October 7 invasion.Reuters spoke
to 13 current and former Israeli officials and experts who acknowledged
that the war has had a major reputational cost. Several expressed hope
that the release this week of the remaining living hostages and some
bodies of abductees in exchange for Palestinian terror convicts and
detainees as part of a first phase of the Gaza accord could start the
process of reviving the Jewish state’s reputation.“This could help
Israel regain some of the empathy and legitimacy it lost during the
war,” one Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said
this week.Peter Lerner, a former IDF international spokesperson, said
that would require policy action on the part of Netanyahu’s government,
rather than just words. He called for “a clear, credible commitment to
peace, protection of innocent lives, respect for international law, and a
serious investment in regional and humanitarian
partnerships.”Netanyahu’s office did not respond to a request for
comment. The prime minister did not attend a summit in Egypt on Monday,
meant to discuss steps towards a permanent end to the Gaza war, citing
the timing’s proximity to the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Simhat
Torah.39 percent of Americans said Israel was going too far in Gaza-A
study published on October 3 by the Pew Research Center — a
Washington-based think tank — found that 39 percent of Americans said
Israel was going too far in its military operation against Hamas, up
from 31% a year ago and 27% in late 2023.Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar
has sounded the alarm for months in closed-door meetings with Netanyahu
and other ministers on the diplomatic repercussions of the war,
according to two officials present at the meetings and one official
briefed on the matter. The ministry did not respond to requests for
comment.Netanyahu startled many last month when he said Israel would
need to become more self-reliant in the coming years because of the
international backlash against the war. The prime minister, who has
repeatedly ruled out the creation of a Palestinian state, has in the
past vowed to prosecute the war until Hamas is completely
destroyed.“Improving reputation takes a long time of rebuilding trust,”
said one Western European diplomat, adding that while the ceasefire was a
“good first step… many more will have to follow.”2 in 3 Israelis worry
about international isolation-More than 66% of Israelis were worried
about the prospect of Israel’s possible international isolation,
according to an August poll by the Institute for National Security
Studies, a Tel Aviv-based think tank, compared to 55% in July 2024.In
August, a global hunger monitor claimed Gaza City and surrounding areas
were suffering from famine, a conclusion Israel called a “modern blood
libel” and which Israeli experts have argued skews the facts. Then, a
United Nations Commission of Inquiry said last month that Israel has
committed genocide in Gaza, a charge the Israeli government has
repeatedly rejected, saying its war is on Hamas and not the Palestinian
people, and pointing to, among other things, evacuation warnings before
strikes, using precision munitions, and the entry of humanitarian
aid. Some former officials also described a lack of cohesive messaging
and resources. Wartime communication efforts remained split among
different departments, they said, while the national public diplomacy
directorate lacked resources, and some far-right ministers publicly
contradicted other officials. Some of the people familiar with the
communication efforts said failures by Netanyahu’s government to engage
diplomatically with concerns in the West about the humanitarian impact
of the war in Gaza had worsened Israel’s isolation.Richard Hecht, a
former IDF international spokesperson, said he believes Israel, whose
military has emerged as the main source of information about the Gaza
operation, needed to establish an effective civilian government
organization for managing international communication. The Gaza ceasefire
agreement was mediated by the United States along with Egypt, Qatar and
Turkey. It is considered the first phase in a larger plan, which calls
for the creation of an international body — a “Board of Peace” led by
Trump — to oversee the next stages of a transition to post-Hamas
governance in Gaza.Though Trump told the Knesset on Monday that a “long
nightmare” for both Israelis and Palestinians was over, significant
obstacles remain to a resolution of the conflict, including the creation
of a Palestinian technocrat administration to run Gaza and the
demilitarization of the Strip. The ceasefire deal remains fragile: The
IDF, which still controls around half of Gaza, opened fire on Tuesday on
Palestinians it said were approaching its forces.Pnina Sharvit Baruch,
who directs a research program on Israel and global powers at the
Institute for National Security Studies, called for Jerusalem to build
on US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to promote regional
partnerships, stability in Gaza, and renewed engagement with moderate
Arab states.“Such a course would not only strengthen regional security
but also help Israel rebuild its international standing and
credibility,” she said.Former ambassador: To fix reputation, Israel
needs elections-Israel’s relations with the few Arab states it has
formal ties with have been strained by the war in Gaza — including the
United Arab Emirates, which established diplomatic relations with Israel
five years ago under the US-brokered Abraham Accords during Trump’s
first term. Some experts questioned whether the current hard-right
government – which relies on the support of religious ultranationalist
parties – would be able to build bridges with neighboring countries and
the Palestinian leadership.Emmanuel Nahshon, a former ambassador who
served as the Foreign Ministry’s deputy director general for public
diplomacy in the first months of the war, said he believes Netanyahu did
not travel to the summit in Egypt to avoid discussing a two-state
solution to the conflict.“I think the first step to improve Israel’s
reputation in the world would be elections and the selection of a new
government that will embark on a new path, which would include learning
lessons from the war,” he added.

Israel said Thursday it would increase
pressure on Hamas to return the remaining 19 bodies of deceased
hostages, with a task force reportedly already having entered Gaza for
that purpose. After the Palestinian terror group insisted that the bodies
it has returned so far are the only ones it can currently locate, a
senior official told Israel’s Channel 12 that “there is a double-digit
number of hostages that it can return.”Meanwhile, an unconfirmed report
on Channel 13 said that an international team set up to locate remaining
bodies had entered the Strip within the previous 24 hours, and was set
to begin its work soon, based on intelligence provided by Israel.Hamas
has returned the remains of nine deceased hostages since it accepted the
first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, which
on Monday saw the release of the final 20 living hostages still held by
terror groups in the Strip. The US-brokered ceasefire deal, signed in
Egypt on October 9, obligated Hamas to release “all Israeli hostages,
living and deceased,” within 72 hours of Israeli troops’ October 10
partial withdrawal — a deadline that expired at noon on Monday. But the
agreement also acknowledged that some hostages’ remains would likely not
be retrieved right away.Hamas claimed Thursday night that it was unable
to return additional bodies without equipment to clear rubble,
contradicting Jerusalem’s assessment — as conveyed to The Times of
Israel by an Israeli official — that Hamas would be able to return the
bodies of the majority of the 28 deceased hostages within the initial
window. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Israel had told
mediators it believes Hamas knows the location of at least six other
bodies. A senior Israeli official, meanwhile, told Channel 12: “There is
a double-digit number of hostages that [Hamas] can return.”According to
the network, security officials were suggesting Thursday that until
more bodies are returned, Israel should prevent materials for rebuilding

Crossing for people.Egypt has delivered a stern message to Hamas that it
must meet its obligations under the ceasefire deal, but is also urging
Israel not to apply additional pressure on Hamas yet, the outlet
said.Israel seeks to pressure Hamas, Trump reportedly gives his OK-Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Thursday with close advisers to
discuss potential steps that Israel could take to pressure Hamas. The
government’s point man on the hostages, Gal Hirsch, told the families of
the remaining deceased hostages that Hamas is indeed set to face
increased pressure, but he declined to elaborate.Israel has described
the paucity of returned bodies thus far as “a fundamental breach of the
agreement,” but the US, which brokered the deal, has been less
accusatory.“We will pursue the return of the bodies of the deceased
until they all come home. And I’m confident they will all come home,”
said White House envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday, at a US Holocaust
Memorial Museum event commemorating the second anniversary of Hamas’s
October 7, 2023, onslaught, which started the Gaza war.Overnight, the
terror group said it would take time to return the remaining bodies, as
they are allegedly buried in tunnels destroyed by Israel or under the
rubble of buildings damaged in Israeli strikes.Israel has insisted that
while some bodies may be in this situation, Hamas currently holds others
that it could easily return right away.Amid disagreement between Israel
and the US about how to approach the impasse, Netanyahu spoke with
Trump by phone Thursday night.Netanyahu updated Trump on the steps
Israel plans to take in response to Hamas allegedly withholding bodies,
and Trump expressed his support for the Israeli decision, according to
the Israel Hayom daily.Al Jazeera footage purports to show Hamas looking
for bodies-A video released overnight Thursday-Friday by the Qatari
Al-Jazeera channel purported to show Hamas operatives searching for the
bodies of hostages in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.In the video,
operatives can be seen working alongside bulldozers and heavy machinery
to clear rubble from the heavily damaged streets.Channel 13 reported
Thursday evening that a team of American, Turkish, Egyptian and Qatari
service members was already in Gaza, and would soon begin efforts to
locate and recover more deceased hostages’ bodies. Qatar has provided
“engineering equipment” for the purpose, the outlet said.According to
Channel 12, Israel has given these countries precise coordinates of
locations where it believes hostages are buried.A Turkish defense
ministry source said Thursday that “there is already a team of 81 AFAD
staff there,” referring to Turkey’s disaster relief agency, indicating
that “one team will be in charge of seeking and finding the bodies.”The
war in Gaza started on October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led
terrorists invaded southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly
civilians, and taking 251 hostages, amid acts of brutality and sexual
assault.Fighting stopped last Friday, a day after Israeli and Hamas
negotiators signed a US-brokered deal to secure the return of all
remaining hostages, in exchange for a ceasefire and the release of 250
life-sentence Palestinian terror convicts, some 1,700 Gazans detained
over the course of the war, and the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every
one dead hostage returned. The 20 living hostages and the near-2,000
Palestinian inmates were released on Monday. The deal was presented as
the first phase of a 20-point White House peace plan, which would
eventually see Hamas disarmed, Gaza demilitarized, and the installation
of a transitional, “technocratic” government that could eventually hand
power to the Palestinian Authority if the latter completes certain
reforms.
Could Trump’s Trip Offer a New Hope for Israeli-Arab Alliances in the Middle East?-AJC Center for a New Middle East-May 14, 2025
This
piece originally appeared in The Algemeiner. At an Israeli Independence
Day reception in Washington, Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve
Witkoff declared, “On behalf of President Trump, I pledge that we will
work tirelessly this year so that next year’s Independence Day is not
just a wish for happiness, but a reality of peace, prosperity and for
Israel, unity.” Witkoff’s suggestion of the “reality of peace” came on
the eve of the President’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE —
the first official foreign trip of his second term.It came during a time
of intense conflict in the Middle East. Just last week, Israel’s
security cabinet voted to significantly broaden the military offensive
against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis struck Israel near Ben Gurion
Airport, and Israel retaliated, striking key economic and military
assets of the terror organization in Yemen. At the same time, the threat
of a nuclear Iran becomes more likely with each passing day. With the
horrors of October 7, 2023, continuing to plague Israel and the Arab
world, amidst the heartbreak of loved ones lost, and as we await an
agreement that will finally bring the remaining hostages home, we must
also look towards the future. There are two very different paths before
us. One is to continue down the road of perpetual conflict, endless
wars, and missed opportunities. The other is to acknowledge that
violence and hate cannot and will not lead to a future of peace or
prosperity — that force without a political horizon only gets you so
far.Building on the successes and stability of the Abraham Accords,
President Trump has a rare opportunity to alter the reality in the
Middle East by breathing new life into Israeli-Arab integration efforts.
Nearly 600 days since the atrocities of October 7, expanded
normalization between Israel and other Arab states, including Saudi
Arabia, may be more difficult than it was during talks two or three
years ago, but it is still within reach. The reasons for this are simple.
The Middle East and North Africa, with the second youngest population
on the planet, is the least economically integrated region in the world,
one of the most water-poor, and one of the fastest-warming regions due
to climate change. The notion that any one country can successfully
confront these challenges alone is a fantasy. Overcoming the challenges
that have emerged post-October 7 is much less straightforward. For
Israel, the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict remains acceptance and
the right to live peacefully in the only homeland of the Jewish people.
For Israelis, it is indefensible that the vast majority of the Arab
world cannot utter the word Hamas or publicly condemn the October 7
massacre. Israelis do not understand how Egypt, in the fifth decade of
its historic peace treaty with Israel, can release a 106-page document
about the day-after in Gaza, a plan then endorsed by the Arab League and
the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and not mention Hamas. After
19 months, this selective silence has led many across Israel to feel
they have no one to turn to as a partner for peace. But potential
partners do exist and have stepped forward. In June 2020, UAE Ambassador
Yousef Al Otaiba published an op-ed directly addressing the Israeli
public. He warned about the dangers of annexation and extended his hand
in peace. The article is credited with being one of the drivers of the
US-brokered Abraham Accords. While it may be more difficult for Arab
leaders to address the Israeli public today, President Trump could help
create a space in which key voices in the Arab world make clear that
Hamas has no future and that all Israeli hostages must be released; that
Israel is part of — and a contributor to — the region; that Jews are
indigenous to their land; and that Israelis have a right to live in
peace and security. Arab leaders could also publicly acknowledge the
limitations of Palestinian governance and commit to supporting
significant institutional reform and acceptance of their Jewish
neighbors. In the same breath, Arab leaders can also make clear that for
this future to be secured, the legitimate rights of the Palestinian
people must be addressed. The Israelis could commit to a pathway to
self-governance, with necessary security conditions. And while this will
not yield statehood tomorrow, the Arab world can help promote new
opportunities — political, economic, and civic — for Israelis and
Palestinians to work and build trust with one another, while also
building recognition of the need to share the sliver of land between the
Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea.President Trump fostering new
diplomatic and social engagement will also allow him to pick up where
his first administration left off, bringing new life to the economic
possibilities of a more interconnected region — which could create four
million new jobs and more than $1 trillion in new economic activity over
a decade, according to a 2021 Rand study. Equally important, renewing
the process of regional integration will move the area toward becoming a
necessary bulwark against — instead of a seething generator of — hate
and extremism.President Trump is making this visit at a time that
requires Israelis and Arabs to be more interdependent in ways not
previously imaginable. So while the challenges in the Middle East are
clear, so too are the unprecedented opportunities. President Trump has a
rare opportunity to once again make history in this too-long-troubled
region.

Most US nuke workers to be sent home as shutdown bites.
Washington,
Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-The US agency in charge of nuclear weapons is
putting most of its workforce on unpaid leave, a top Republican
lawmaker warned Friday, as a prolonged government shutdown bit further
into already crippled public services. With the standoff in Congress over
federal spending in its 17th day and no breakthrough in sight, House
Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers told reporters the
National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) was about to run out of
money."They will have to lay off 80 percent of their employees. These
are not employees that you want to go home," he told reporters. "They're
managing and handling a very important strategic asset for us. They
need to be at work and being paid."Rogers's committee later clarified
that the employees would be furloughed -- or placed on forced unpaid
leave -- rather than fired permanently. The United States has a stockpile
of 5,177 nuclear warheads, with about 1,770 deployed, according to the
global security nonprofit Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The NNSA is
responsible for designing, manufacturing, servicing and securing the
weapons. It has fewer than 2,000 federal employees who oversee some
60,000 contractors.Energy Secretary Chris Wright told USA Today in an
interview Thursday touching on the effects of the shutdown on the NNSA
that "starting next week, we're going to have to let go tens of
thousands...of workers that are critical to our national security."The
newspaper reported that staff at the agency had been told that furloughs
could begin as soon as Friday.- Massive cuts -Senators headed to their
home states Thursday after a 10th failed vote to end the shutdown that
started on October 1 when the federal government ran out of
Congress-approved funding. If the standoff remains unresolved by the end
of Tuesday next week it will have lasted 22 days -- making it the
second-longest in history. The record of 35 days came during a fight over
border wall funding in President Donald Trump's first term in the White
House.Democrats have been urging Trump to get more involved in the
current gridlock, asserting that only the president will be able to move
Republicans in Congress from their policy of refusing to negotiate
until the government has reopened.Republicans leaders have been
privately discouraging Trump's involvement, fearful that he will strike
an unpalatable deal on expiring health care subsidies that is at the
heart of Democratic demands. The president is seeking to push through
massive cuts to the federal bureaucracy during the shutdown.White House
budget chief Russ Vought said in an interview he wants to see "north of
10,000" jobs cut -- although a federal judge temporarily blocked
shutdown-related layoffs, ruling that they were politically motivated
and unlawful. With 1.4 million federal workers either sent home without
pay or working for nothing, Trump intervened to ensure military
personnel received their checks on Wednesday, although doubts remain
over future disbursements.Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune
told MSNBC in an interview that aired Thursday he would guarantee
Democrats a vote on extending health care subsidies in exchange for
reopening the government."I've said, if you need a vote, we can
guarantee you get a vote by a date certain," he said. "At some point
Democrats have to take yes for an answer."

Republicans warn US shutdown could force layoffs of nuke workers.
Washington,
Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-The US government shutdown could force the
layoffs of most of the employees handling the nation's nuclear weapons,
the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee warned Friday."We
were just informed last night (that) the National Nuclear Security
Administration (NNSA) -- the group that handles and manages our nuclear
stockpile -- that the carryover funding they've been using is about to
run out," Republican congressman Mike Rogers told reporters."They will
have to lay off 80 percent of their employees."The federal government
shutdown is set to head into a new week with no end in sight after the
Senate failed for a 10th time on Thursday to pass the Republican bill to
reopen the government. It was not clear if Rogers was referring to
temporary enforced leave during the shutdown, or permanent layoffs. But
he added: "These are not employees that you want to go home. They're
managing and handling a very important strategic asset for us. They need
to be at work and being paid."The United States has a stockpile of

Trump says to meet Putin in Budapest after 'great' call-By Danny KEMP.
Washington
(AFP) Oct 16, 2025-US President Donald Trump said he would meet
Russia's Vladimir Putin in Hungary after a "very productive" call
Thursday, and questioned Kyiv's push for Tomahawk missiles just a day
before hosting Ukraine's leader at the White House. In his latest abrupt
pivot on Russia's 2022 invasion, Trump said he expected to meet Putin in
Budapest within the next two weeks for what would be their second
summit since the American's return to power. The Kremlin welcomed the
"extremely frank and trustful" call and said it was immediately
preparing for the summit.Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted
that the threat of Tomahawks had pushed Moscow to negotiate, even as he
deals with yet another Trump shift on the war."I believe great progress
was made with today's telephone conversation," Trump said on his Truth
Social network, saying he and Putin would meet to "see if we can bring
this 'inglorious' War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end."The
79-year-old Republican later told reporters in the Oval Office that the
call was "very productive" and that he expected to meet "within two
weeks or so, pretty quick."US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will
swiftly meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to sort out summit
details, Trump added.- 'Momentum' -Trump said the Russian leader "didn't
like it" when he raised the possibility during their call of giving
Moscow's enemy Ukraine the missiles with a 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer)
range. But Trump appeared to cast doubt on whether Ukraine would actually
get the American-made arms it covets, saying the United States could
not "deplete" its own supply."We need them too, so I don't know what we
can do about that," he said.Trump's relations with Putin -- a leader for
whom he has repeatedly expressed admiration over the years -- have
blown hot and cold since he returned to the White House in January. After
an initial rapprochement, Trump has shown increasing frustration,
particularly since he came away from Alaska with no end to the war he
once promised to solve within 24 hours.Zelensky meanwhile has gone the
opposite way, winning Trump's support after a disastrous initial meeting
in February when the US president berated him in front of the
cameras. But Trump's latest swing appears to have moved the dial again,
leaving Zelensky having to negotiate the situation with Ukraine's main
military backer.Zelensky said as he arrived Thursday in Washington that
he hopes the "momentum" of the Middle East peace deal Trump brokered
will help end the war in Ukraine."We can already see that Moscow is
rushing to resume dialogue as soon as it hears about Tomahawks,"
Zelensky said, adding that he'll also be meeting US defence companies to
discuss additional supplies of air defence systems.- 'Peace summit'
-The Kremlin hailed the "highly substantive" Putin-Trump call, which
Putin's top aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists was at Russia's
initiative. But Putin told Trump that giving Ukraine Tomahawks would "not
change the situation on the battlefield" and would harm "prospects for
peaceful resolution," added Ushakov.Budapest had been discussed as a
possible venue for the previous Trump-Putin meeting before they settled
on Alaska.Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has maintained
friendly relations with both men, said later that he had spoken to
Trump. "Preparations for the USA-Russia peace summit are underway," he
said on X.The choice of Budapest also sidesteps an International
Criminal Court arrest warrant for Putin for alleged war crimes.Hungary
has announced its withdrawal from the ICC yet is still theoretically a
member until June 2026.But Orban gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu a promise that he would not carry out the warrant when
Netanyahu visited Hungary in April. In Ukraine the war ground on with
Moscow renewing its attacks on Kyiv's energy grid.Russian strikes forced
Ukraine to introduce nationwide rolling power cuts, for the second day
in a row, in the cold season when temperatures can fall to zero at
night.
Venezuela deploys troops, reports of new US boat strike.
San
Cristobal, Venezuela, Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-Venezuela deployed
thousands of troops near the Colombian border on Thursday in response to
the US military buildup in the Caribbean, where US media reported a new
strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat. The United States has sent
several military vessels to the Caribbean Sea and launched a series of
deadly naval strikes on boats in recent weeks, a campaign that experts
say is illegal. At least 27 people have been killed in the US strikes so
far, with the military buildup sparking fears in Caracas that the
ultimate goal is a change of government in Venezuela.Caracas has
launched military drills, including the deployment of 17,000 troops in
Tachira state, which borders Colombia, according to the commander there,
General Michell Valladares. While President Donald Trump weighs whether
to expand US military action from the sea onto land, the admiral
overseeing the naval strikes announced he will step down. The latest boat
attack on Thursday left survivors among those on board, media outlets
including CBS, CNN and NBC reported, citing unidentified US
officials. The Pentagon did not respond immediately to an AFP request for
information about the number of survivors or their condition. In a
significant escalation, Trump indicated on Wednesday he had authorized
covert CIA action against Venezuela and was considering further action
against the alleged drug cartels."We are certainly looking at land now,
because we've got the sea very well under control," Trump told reporters
in the Oval Office.A day later, Admiral Alvin Holsey announced he would
leave his position as head of US forces operating in Central and South
America. The head of US Southern Command gave no reason for retiring just
a year into his tenure, which follows multiple top US military officers
being dismissed in recent months.- Venezuela military exercises
-Venezuela's leftist leader Nicolas Maduro has decried any attempt by
Washington at "regime change" and criticized "coups d'etat orchestrated
by the CIA."Its vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, also denied a report
that she had negotiated with the United States to oust Maduro.Under
Maduro's direction, the Venezuelan military carried out exercises in the
country's biggest shantytowns this week after another US strike.AFP
journalists saw troops deployed on Thursday in Tachira, where the three
main bridges connecting Venezuela with Colombia are located.Venezuelan
forces were also stationed in southern Amazonas state, which borders
Colombia and Brazil, and multiple coastal areas.Trinidad and Tobago,
located off the coast of Venezuela, is investigating whether two of
those killed in US strikes at sea were its citizens, officials said on
Wednesday.Colombian President Gustavo Petro recently called on the
United Nations to open a "criminal process" against Trump for the
attacks, which he believes have also killed Colombians.Washington has
not released evidence to support its assertion that the targets of its
strikes are drug smugglers, and experts say the summary killings are
illegal even if they hit confirmed narcotics
traffickers.bur-rsc/pbt-ADMIRAL GROUP
China boasts of crackdown on scam centres on Myanmar border.
Beijing,
Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-Chinese authorities are boasting of a
sweeping crackdown on scam centres across the country's southern border
with Myanmar, days before a key political meeting in Beijing.Government
statements published since Wednesday mention the arrests of more than
57,000 Chinese citizens for their alleged involvement in fraud and
detail accounts of torture and murder in the murky compounds. An AFP
investigation revealed Tuesday that despite China's efforts to smash
them with security forces in Myanmar and Thailand, scam centres are
still in business and bigger than ever.Satellite images and AFP drone
footage showed frenetic building work in the heavily guarded compounds
around Myawaddy on the Thailand-Myanmar border. They appeared to be using
Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service on a huge scale.People
trafficked or lured by false promises into scam centres are forced to
work around the clock, extracting billions of dollars from victims
around the world through phone and internet scams. Some also go
willingly.Experts say most of the centres, notorious for their romance
scams and "pig butchering" investment cons, are run by Chinese-led crime
syndicates working with Myanmar militias in the lawless badlands of the
Golden Triangle.Their fate has sparked wideranging discussion in China,
with in-depth accounts of Beijing's crackdown on fraud rings dominating
social media this week. The revelations, shared by China's Ministry of
Public Security, come before a closely watched four-day gathering of top
officials in Beijing for deliberations on long-term economic planning.A
court in September held a hearing against prominent gang leader Xu Faqi
and his associates, the ministry said in a statement Friday.Xu,
arrested last January, is accused of helping run 14 scam centres in
Myanmar's northern Kokang region, the ministry said.He allegedly oversaw
a 400-man militia that beat and killed people who failed to meet scam
targets. The ministry said in a statement Wednesday that members of
another prominent gang known as the Wei family have been indicted and
will soon face trial."Violence and brutality were everywhere in the
cyber fraud complex," the ministry said of the Wei-run parks also in
Kokang. It added that "dog cages" featured at the compounds where
"beatings, corporal punishment, nail pulling, finger chopping and
shootings were commonplace".The park-runners had "hands stained with the
blood of the Chinese people", the ministry said.
Zelensky to push for Tomahawk missiles in Trump meeting.
Washington,
Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meets
Donald Trump at the White House Friday to push the US leader for
long-range Tomahawk missiles that can strike deep inside Russia. The
meeting comes a day after Trump threw Zelensky a curveball by announcing
a fresh summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.Trump also cast
doubt on whether he would grant Ukraine's wish for the powerful Tomahawk
cruise missiles, saying Washington could not "deplete" its own
supplies.Ukraine has been lobbying Washington for Tomahawks for weeks,
arguing that they could help put pressure on Russia to end its brutal
three-and-a-half year invasion. But on the eve of Zelensky's visit, Putin
warned Trump in a call against delivering the weapons, saying it could
escalate the war and jeopardize peace talks.Trump and Putin agreed to a
new summit in the Hungarian capital Budapest, which would be their first
since an August meeting in Alaska that failed to produce any kind of
peace deal.- 'Many questions' -Diplomatic talks on ending Russia's
invasion have stalled since the Alaska summit.Ukraine had hoped
Zelensky's trip would add more pressure on Putin, especially by getting
Tomahawks, which have a range of over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles). But
Trump, who once said he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours,
appears set on pursuing a new diplomatic breakthrough to follow the Gaza
ceasefire deal that he brokered last week. The Kremlin said Friday that
"many questions" needed resolving before Putin and Trump could meet,
including who would be on each negotiating team."It could indeed take
place within two weeks or a little later. There's an understanding that
nothing should be put off," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. But the
Kremlin appeared to brush off suggestions Putin would have difficulty
flying over European airspace.Hungary said Friday it would ensure Putin
could enter and "hold successful talks" with the US despite an
International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him for
alleged war crimes."Budapest is the only suitable place in Europe for a
USA-Russia peace summit," Hungarian President Viktor Orban said on X on
Friday.- Trump frustration -Zelensky's visit to Washington, Ukraine's
main military backer, will be his third since Trump returned to
office.During this time, Trump's position on the Ukraine war has shifted
dramatically back and forth. At the start of his term, Trump and Putin
reached out to each other as the US leader derided Zelensky as a
"dictator without elections".Tensions came to a head in February, when
Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart of "not having the cards" in a
bombshell televised meeting at the Oval Office.Relations between the two
have since warmed as Trump has expressed growing frustration with
Putin. But Trump has kept a channel of dialogue open with Putin, saying
that they "get along." The US leader has repeatedly changed his position
on sanctions and other steps against Russia following calls with the
Russian president.Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in

Wonder weapon'? Five things about US Tomahawks coveted by Ukraine By Danny KEMP with Mathieu RABECHAULT in Paris.
Washington
(AFP) Oct 16, 2025-The Tomahawk cruise missile, set to be at the centre
of talks between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky, has been a mainstay of the US armed forces for over four
decades and repeatedly used with success in the theatre of war.Ukraine
is eager to obtain the American missiles which would allow Kyiv to
strike deep into Russian territory and give its armed forces a
significant boost three-and-a-half years into the conflict sparked by
the February 2022 full-scale invasion. Some analysts and observers
question if for all the avowed prowess of the Tomahawk it would in any
way tip the balance in the war.But their delivery would be a symbol of
American support for Kyiv in the wake of the disastrous Oval Office
meeting between Zelensky and Trump in February and a strong signal to
Russian President Vladimir Putin that Trump is losing patience with
Moscow.Trump announced Thursday one day ahead of the talks with Zelensky
that, following a call with Putin, he would meet the Russian leader at
an unspecified date in Budapest. Here are five things to know about the
Tomahawk:- Mainstay of US armed forces -The Tomahawk is a cruise missile
that has been in service for 42 years and since then used in almost all
US military interventions.Fired from submarines or surface ships, the
BGM-109 Tomahawk flies up to 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) in range, at
880 km/h (550 mph) and a few dozen meters above the ground.According to
US Navy budget documents 8,959 missiles have been produced since the
programme began and more than 2,350 have been fired.A version of the
Tomahawk carrying a nuclear warhead was retired from service in 2013.-
Repeatedly used in conflict -The Tomahawks were first fired in a
conflict during the US-led Operation Desert Storm against Saddam
Hussein's Iraq in 1991 and repeatedly in US military interventions since
then. Most recently, some 80 missiles were still fired in January 2024
against the Tehran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, and another 30 against
the Isfahan nuclear site in Iran in June when the US joined Israel's war
against the Islamic republic. The Tomahawk is also in service with the
British Navy. Japan decided last year to acquire 400, and Australia and
the Netherlands are also considering acquiring them.- Wanted by Ukraine
-With its 450-kilogramme explosive charge, the Tomahawk can be used
against air defense sites, command centers, airfields, or any heavily
defended target.Ukraine could with a Tomahawk target at least 1,655
targets of interest, including 67 air bases in Russia, well beyond
Moscow, according to the US-based Institute for the Study of War
(ISW).Stacie Pettyjohn, a researcher at the CNAS think tank, estimated
the US could supply 20-50 units. The US Navy has only ordered 57 for
2026, an insufficient number for its manufacturer Raytheon to quickly
ramp up production, according to German missile researcher Fabian
Hoffmann. They would therefore have to be taken from US stocks.Ukraine
would also rather launch the missiles from land rather than sea but the
land-based launchers are in very limited supply: the US Army currently
has only two batteries of four launchers, and the Marine Corps only
four.- No game changer -Like the battle tanks or the F-16s and Mirages
already sold to Ukraine, the Tomahawk is not "a wonder weapon that is
going to win the war," Pettyjohn wrote on X while adding that they have
"have a notable strategic and operational effect"."I don't believe that a
weapons system can radically change the situation in Ukraine," agreed
the head of the French Army, General Pierre Schill.Especially since,
with the homegrown Flamingo cruise missile, "the Ukrainians have
developed deep strike capabilities, which they built themselves and are
now using on the ground," said Schill.- Warning to Russia -Schill said
the possible delivery of Tomahawks is "above all a political and
strategic signal from Mr Trump to Mr Putin to say 'I told you I wanted
us to move towards peace, I am ready to support the Ukrainians'" if
there is no progress.Putin has warned that the supply of Tomahawks to
Kyiv would constitute a "whole new level of escalation, including in
relations between Russia and the United States".Trump on Wednesday
described the Tomahawk as an "incredible weapon, very offensive
weapon"."Do they want to have Tomahawks going in their direction? I
don't think so," he said.bur-mra-sjw/givMAINSTAY MEDICAL

Water salinity hurting farmers, livestock in Iraq.
Basra,
Iraq, Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-Iraqi farmer Umm Ali has watched her
poultry die as salinity levels in the country's south hit record highs,
rendering already scarce water unfit for human consumption and killing
livestock."We used to drink, wash and cook with water from the river,
but now it's hurting us," said Umm Ali, 40, who lives in the once watery
Al-Mashab marshes of southern Iraq's Basra province. This season alone,
she said brackish water has killed dozens of her ducks and 15
chickens."I cried and grieved, I felt as if all my hard work had been
wasted," said the widowed mother of three.Iraq, a country heavily
impacted by climate change, has been ravaged for years by drought and
low rainfall.Declining freshwater flows have raised salt and pollution
levels, particularly further south where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers
converge before spilling into the Gulf."We haven't seen such high
levels of salinity in 89 years," Iraq's water ministry spokesman Khaled
Shamal said.Last month, salinity levels recorded in central Basra
province soared to around 29,000 parts per million compared to 2,600 ppm
last year, according to a report from the ministry.Freshwater should
contain less than 1,000 ppm of dissolved salts, while ocean water
salinity levels are around 35,000 ppm, according to the US Geological
Survey.- Dead buffalo -The Tigris and Euphrates converge at Basra's
Shatt al-Arab waterway "laden with pollutants accumulated along their
course", said Hasan al-Khateeb, an expert from Iraq's University of
Kufa.In recent weeks, the Euphrates has seen its lowest water levels in
decades, and Iraq's artificial lake reserves are at their lowest in
recent history.Khateeb warned that the Shatt al-Arab's water levels had
plummeted and it was failing to hold back the seawater from the
Gulf.Farmer Zulaykha Hashem, 60, said the water in the area had become
very brackish this year, adding that she has to wait for the situation
to improve in order to irrigate her crop of pomegranate trees, figs and
berries.According to the United Nations, almost a quarter of women in
Basra and nearby provinces work in agriculture."We cannot even leave.
Where would we go?" Hashem said, in a country where farmers facing
drought and rising salinity often find themselves trapped in a cycle of
water crisis. The UN's International Organization for Migration, which
documents climate-induced displacement in Iraq, has warned that
increased water salinity is destroying palm groves, citrus trees and
other crops. As of October last year, some 170,000 people were displaced
in central and southern Iraq due to climate-related factors, according
to the agency.Water scarcity pushed Maryam Salman, who is in her 30s, to
leave nearby Missan province for Basra several years ago, hoping her
buffalo could enjoy the Shatt al-Arab.Near her house, AFP saw three
buffalo skeletons on the parched land, with locals saying the animals
had died due to lack of water.Rising salinity is not the only problem
now, said Salman, a mother of three children.="Water is not available...
neither summer nor winter," she said.- Fewer fish -The Tigris and
Euphrates originate in Turkey, and Iraqi authorities have repeatedly
blamed dams across the border for significantly reducing their
flows.Iraq receives less than 35 percent of its allocated share of water
from the two rivers, according to authorities, in a country with
inefficient water management systems after decades of war and
neglect.Khateeb from the University of Kufa said that in addition to
claiming its share of the rivers, Iraq must pursue desalination projects
in the Shatt al-Arab.In July, the government announced a desalination
project in Basra with a capacity of one million cubic meters per
day.Local residents said the brackish water was also impacting fish
stocks.Hamdiyah Mehdi said her husband, who is a fisherman, returns home
empty-handed more frequently. She blamed the Shatt al-Arab's "murky and
salty water" for his short temper after long days without a catch, and
for her children's persistent rash."It has been tough," said Mehdi, 52,
noting the emotional toll on the family as well as on their health and
livelihood."We take our frustrations out on each other."

Stock markets fall with Wall St as US credit fears add to worries.
Hong
Kong, Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2025-Asian and European stocks tracked
losses on Wall Street on Friday amid fresh credit market fears that
compounded worries about trade tensions, a possible tech bubble and the
US government shutdown. After a months-long run-up that has seen some
indexes hit multiple records, investors have been sent reeling this week
since US President Donald Trump stoked his tariff standoff with China
on Friday, sparking tit-for-tat salvos that have broken the
calm.Investors have been nervously watching the US banking sector since
parts company First Brands and subprime lender Tricolor filed for
bankruptcy in September, with the former owing billions to lenders. The
announcement was followed this week by news that Zions Bancorp had a $50
million charge-off tied to commercial loans from its California arm,
while Western Alliance said a borrower failed to deliver the promised
collateral. The news sent mid-sized banking shares tumbling and fanned
out to the rest of Wall Street, with the all three main indexes down. The
VIX Volatility index -- a closely watched benchmark of investor anxiety
-- hit its highest level since May, while safe-haven gold set another
record of $4,379.93. Silver also hit a new peak.Thursday's developments
dealt another blow to the optimism that had pushed markets higher this
year, with investors already fretting that valuations -- particularly
among tech firms -- are overdone and possibly in an AI-fuelled bubble
that could soon pop."The volatility in regional banks, combined with the
recent collapse of subprime lender Tricolor Holdings, has investors
questioning the broader health of US credit markets," said National
Australia Bank's Rodrigo Catril. The losses in New York were matched in
Asia, where Hong Kong tanked 2.5 percent and Shanghai two percent. Tokyo
and Taipei each lost more than one percent while Singapore, Sydney,
Wellington, Bangkok and Manila were also in the red.London, Paris and
Frankfurt fell between one and 2.3 percent.Investors were also still on
tenterhooks as Washington and Beijing exchanged salvos this week on
trade and shipping after Trump's warning Friday that he would hit China
with 100 percent tariffs over its rare earth export controls. However,
Pepperstone's Michael Brown was upbeat about the outlook on that
front."Conviction remains lacking, as the latest round of Trump tariff
threats continues to hang over markets like the 'Sword of Damocles'," he
wrote in a commentary."It must be said that there's not been much by
way of new info on that front, though my working assumption remains that
the latest round of tariff threats are a negotiating gambit, and that
tensions will indeed de-escalate in relatively short order."Lawmakers in
Washington are still no closer to ending a shutdown that has caused the
closure of government departments and delayed the release of key data
used by the Federal Reserve to decide on policy.Still, traders have been
given some support by expectations the central bank will cut interest
rates at least once more this year, though even that was based on a
string of reports showing the US jobs market deteriorating.Crude prices
extended losses on worries about China-US tensions, with selling also
coming from news that Trump will meet Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin
to discuss ending the conflict in Ukraine.- Key figures at around 0810

DANIEL 2:37-45
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after
thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third
kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And
the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh
in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these,
shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the
feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,
forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,

EU reaches agreement on plan backing defence industry-by AFP Staff Writers.
Brussels,
Belgium (AFP) Oct 16, 2025-The European Union on Thursday arrived at an
agreement for a programme boosting its defence industry, with an
initial 1.5 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to ramp up production and
supply chains, the Council of the EU said. The development -- the fruit
of long negotiations -- puts the bloc on track to improve its defence
readiness, and also aims to "support defence industrial cooperation with
Ukraine", the body, which represents member countries, said in a
statement. The 1.5-billion-euro budget for the European Defence Industry
Programme (EDIP), provided as grants, covers the period 2025-2027,
according to the agreement struck with the European Parliament.European
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the news as an
important step towards the EU being "defence-ready by 2030".Negotiations
on the EDIP had long been dogged by the question of whether or not to
give a preference to European-made military equipment, weapons and
ammunition. Some EU countries wanted to use the programme to finance the
purchase of materiel from outside the bloc, notably from the United
States. The compromise reached will limit the value of components made
outside the EU or its partner countries such as Norway, to 35 percent of
the total investment."EDIP will reverse the importation practice long
observed in Europe, to concretely support a ramping up of our industrial
base," said one of the lead MEPs on the issue, Francois-Xavier
Bellamy.Currently, the EU gets more than 60 percent of its military
weapons and systems from outside the bloc, mainly from the United
States. Brussels wants to reduce that to 45 percent. Some 300 million
euros from the first EDIP budget will go to defence cooperation with
Ukraine. The European Parliament said it has secured funding towards the
budget from non-EU countries that also want to participate in the EDIP,
such as Britain and Canada.ob/rmb/phz
US report says European giant, others sell to Chinese military-linked companies-by AFP Staff Writers.
Washington
(AFP) Oct 7, 2025-A US Congressional committee report released Tuesday
said that five major semiconductor equipment manufacturers, including
European giant ASML, sold $38 billion worth of critical technology to
China in 2024, including to companies flagged as US national security
threats. The House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between
the United States and the Chinese Communist Party found that China now
accounts for 39 percent of total revenue for the five leading
"toolmakers" -- the specialized, highly complex machines needed to
produce computer chips. The report mentioned US companies Applied
Materials, KLA Corporation and Lam Research, but said ASML of the
Netherlands and Japan's Tokyo Electron had substantially increased sales
to restricted Chinese entities as Washington imposed stricter controls
on American companies' exports. The investigation revealed that five
Chinese companies restricted by Washington for their military ties were
among the top 30 customers of all five equipment manufacturers between
2022 and 2024.These included Semiconductor Manufacturing International
Corporation (SMIC), China's largest chipmaker, and Yangtze Memory
Technologies (YMTC)."The Toolmakers are selling the forges of future
weapons and surveillance tools to the very companies that seek to build
(China's) semiconductor industry into a dominant force," the report
said. The supply from the five companies is crucial to China's efforts to
ramp up its chip industry to beat restrictions imposed by Washington as
Beijing looks to keep up in the race towards state-of-the-art AI
technology. The report said ASML sold 70 percent of its advanced DUV
immersion lithography systems to China in 2024, up from 26 percent in
2022. These machines are critical for producing sophisticated
semiconductors used in artificial intelligence and military
applications."China is striving with all its might to build a domestic,
self-sufficient semiconductor manufacturing industry," the report
warned, noting the technology could be used for military projects
threatening the US.The committee recommended dramatically expanding
export controls to cover all semiconductor manufacturing equipment
capable of producing advanced chips destined for China, not just
specific components or products. It also called for better alignment of
export controls among US allies, particularly the Netherlands and Japan,
warning that the current patchwork system creates an "unlevel playing
field" where foreign companies can sell equipment that American firms
cannot.
EU says drone defences not 'optional' in push to face Russia By Max DELANY.
Brussels,
Belgium (AFP) Oct 16, 2025-The EU had no choice but to build up
anti-drone defences against Russia, the bloc's foreign policy chief Kaja
Kallas said Thursday, as Brussels unveiled a "roadmap" to prepare for
potential conflict by 2030.The initiative is one of several flagship
projects in the EU's "readiness roadmap" aimed at preparing the bloc for
a possible attack from Moscow in the coming years."Drones are already
redefining warfare. Having drone defences is no longer optional for
anyone," Kallas told journalists."Today we propose a new anti-drone
system to be fully operational by the end of 2027," she said.EU chief
Ursula von der Leyen first called to create a "drone wall" to counter
Moscow last month, hours after NATO jets shot down Russian unmanned
aircraft in Poland. The initial focus of the proposal was on bolstering
the EU's eastern border states, but it has since been broadened after
mysterious drones rattled a string of countries further west.Under the
new plan Brussels wants the project -- now called the "European Drone
Defence Initiative" -- to begin working initially by the end of 2026,
and to be fully functioning by the end of 2027.Brussels hopes to get the
backing of EU leaders for the plan -- the latest volley in its push to
ramp up its defences -- at a summit next week."Russia has no capacity to
launch an attack on the European Union today, but it could prepare
itself in the years to come," Kallas said."Danger will not disappear,
even if the war in Ukraine will end."Alongside the drone initiative is a
broader "Eastern Flank Watch" programme designed to bolster air and
ground defences along the EU's border closest to Russia by end 2028.The
EU is seeking to tap Ukraine's war-tested expertise to incorporate
low-cost capabilities to tackle drones. There has been some scepticism
from countries such as Germany over the project -- and fears that the EU
could end up treading on the toes of the NATO military alliance.--
'Russia intensifying hybrid war' -So far the EU has not given a concrete
estimate for how much it thinks the flagship projects will cost. There
is also so far no announcement on potential new financing -- despite
calls from EU countries close to Russia for the bloc to help spread the
burden of new investments."We need fast, additional financial
instruments, grant-based and without punishing the states that are on
the border," Lithuania's defence minister Dovile Sakaliene told
AFP."It's our joint responsibility to protect the Eastern flank border
-- all of us."Sakaliene said that given Moscow was "clearly intensifying
its hybrid war" against Europe, the 2027 goal for the anti-drone system
was not soon enough."I'd like to have it sooner, because what we see is
a rapidly rising concentration of incidents," she said.
Space Force operationally accepts SciTec Forge missile warning ground system by Clarence Oxford.
Boulder,
CO (SPX) Oct 17, 2025-On September 23, 2025, the U.S. Space Force
declared operational acceptance of the second operational delivery of
the Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution, or FORGE, for the
11th Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Space Force Base. OA #2
integrates FORGE Mission Data Processing with the cyber-secure FORGE
Framework to sharpen accuracy, boost performance, and harden resiliency
across Missile Warning."This delivery provides dramatic performance
enhancements to our Missile Warning warfighters," said Matt McHugh,
SciTec Executive Director and senior FORGE technical advisor. "With
FORGE processing we're delivering cutting edge image processing, signal
detection, and AI/ML throughout the stack, which is dramatically
increasing the sensitivity of the system and enabling Missile Warning to
detect more and stealthier threats sooner, and track them longer. Just
as importantly, we are now able to continuously deliver enhancements
into the operational system in close collaboration with the operational
users to ensure Missile Warning stays ahead of the threat."Managed by
System Delta 84 at Space Systems Command, FORGE represents a shift in
ground system acquisition. Rather than buying a monolithic system from a
single vendor, the government runs prototype competitions for component
pieces under other transaction authority, enabling rapid modernization
of legacy infrastructure while fostering innovation and speed.SSC
selected SciTec in August 2022, following a 12-month prototype
competition, to deliver next-generation mission data processing
applications for Missile Warning. In March 2023, after a nine-month
competitive fly-off, SSC tasked SciTec to add sensor-specific processing
applications. Earlier this year SciTec received the Enterprise OPIR
System contract to complete the FORGE Framework, with these elements
converging for OA #2."FORGE proves there is a better way to do
acquisition - expand the industrial base, leverage non-traditionals, try
before you buy, and emphasize close collaboration between operations
and acquisitions," said David Simenc, SciTec President. "For all of our
FORGE efforts our approach has been the same. Speed to Ops - deliver on
schedule. Ensure the government owns the baseline - no vendor lock. And
focus on the mission - deliver for the warfighter. We are delivering
four more major operational milestones in the next 24 months while
continuously enhancing existing operational capabilities. We look
forward to working shoulder to shoulder with the Space Force's System
Deltas and Mission Deltas to deliver these critical
capabilities."SciTec, a non-traditional defense contractor headquartered
in Princeton, NJ, executes the FORGE program primarily from its
software factory in Boulder, CO. On October 6, SciTec announced its
intent to be acquired by Firefly Aerospace, with closing anticipated in
the fourth quarter of 2025.
