A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan on Monday, April 20, 2026, triggering immediate tsunami warnings. 
Key Details:
Time: The quake occurred at approximately 4:53 p.m. local time (0753 GMT).
Location: The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan.
Depth: The earthquake was shallow, with a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface.
Tsunami Warning: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued warnings for waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) for parts of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures.
Impact: The tremor was felt as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away. Early reports indicated no immediate damage or casualties, but train services between Tokyo and Aomori were suspended, and citizens were advised to evacuate coastal areas. 
This region is near the same area hit by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in December 2025 and a 6.5 magnitude quake just over a week ago. It is also located near the area of the 2011 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami.

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck off the northern Japanese coast, and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert in the region.The quake registering a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 occurred off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at around 4:53 p.m. (0753 GMT), at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface, the agency said.Japan’s NHK public television said a tsunami of up to 3 meters (10 feet) could hit the area shortly.The Associated Press.
