Hymie Rubenstein is editor of The REAL Indian Residential Schools newsletter and a retired professor of anthropology, The University of Manitoba.Since the May 27, 2021, media release by the Kamloops Indian Band of “… the confirmation of the remains of 215 children [buried in unmarked graves] who were students of the Kamloops Indian Residential School,” similar announcements across the country have come fast and furious.This macabre fascination with unmarked graves and missing students quickly accelerated after the Trudeau government’s Aug. 10, 2021 announcement of $320 million “in additional [to the millions already promised] support for Indigenous-led, Survivor-centric and culturally sensitive initiatives and investments to help Indigenous communities respond to and heal from the ongoing impacts of residential schools,” including “… to research and locate burial sites as well as to commemorate and memorialize the children who died at residential schools.”Including the Kamloops site, 34 reputedly unmarked grave sites and potential burial locales have been identified since May 2021. Nevertheless, not a single body associated with any residential school has been recovered, let alone forensically examined. Although five of the six pre-Kamloops searches found human remains, none represented missing Indian Residential School [IRS] students or other missing persons.Joyous students and staff of the Holy Angels Indian Residential School, Alberta-Still, none of these negative findings have put a damper on more scavenger hunts for unmarked graves whose only prize has been the money earned and jobs created from the search itself along with generous funding for ancillary activities like healing and commemoration. This applies in spades to a Mar. 3, 2022 CBC story about a search at the site of a former northern Alberta Indian Residential school called Holy Angels.This Roman Catholic school, demolished in 1974, was on the Fort Chipewyan Indian Reserve 730 kilometres north of Edmonton and is said to be the last whereabouts of 89 “missing” children representing at least four different aboriginal groups who attended the school between 1880 and 1953.This search has just been accompanied by the burning to the ground of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Roman Catholic Church associated with the school in the early morning hours of Aug. 25, 2022. Like the dozens of Catholic and other churches that were also destroyed following the revelations at Kamloops, this was termed by the RCMP as a suspected case of arson, a reasonable assertion given the accusations of student abuse – none proven — at the Holy Angels school.Both ambivalence about and bitterness towards the Catholic Church remained.  As the Edmonton Journal reported:“Plenty of elders in the community witnessed and endured physical and sexual abuse at the school. Indigenous and educational leaders in the community have said for years that trauma was passed down to other generations…. Alice Rigney, an ACFN [Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation] elder, called the church’s destruction an “attack on the community’s history.” Rigney was another survivor of physical and sexual abuse during her 10 years at the Holy Angels Residential School. She remembers cheering when she watched the demolition of the residential school, calling it ‘a place of Hell.’”Why is this band searching for “potential unmarked graves” containing bodies of students who attended the Holy Angels Residential School when no children are being searched for by any of their relatives? How can children be missing when nobody knows their names or is looking for them? Also, why was “An archaeological team from the University of Alberta … hired to search the former school grounds for potential unmarked graves….” when there is no evidence to suggest that students were secretly buried? Yes, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), the successor to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) charged with reporting on the history, operation, and legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (IRS), lists the names and date of death of the 89 Holy Angels IRS students on their Memorial Register who are said to have died at the school or within a year of their discharge.According to the NCTR, “Following the direction provided by Survivors [i.e., any indigenous person who attended an IRS] during the community engagements held in 2018 and at the National Gathering of Elders, only the names and dates of death will be public.”But this directive did not prevent the NCTR from publishing, in summary fashion, the cause of death and place of burial for each school as it did for the schools taken together. Not doing so helped precipitate the trauma and rage felt by indigenous people across the land resulting in church burnings like the Fort Chipewyan one.To this day, it remains unclear how hard the NCTR has been looking for the fate of the “missing children” in publicly available archival sources. If it has been working diligently on this issue, no detailed findings have been released to the public or the affected communities since 2015.This would be unconscionable.What is clear, however, is that whenever independent researchers like Nina Green undertook such searches at their own expense, most were quickly found “buried” in publicly-accessible federal and provincial archives, their physical remains nearly always interred in band cemeteries.Other research has shown that so-called “students who never returned” from their residential schools were often sent home when terminally ill. If they died in the school infirmary, their remains were transported to their reserves whenever this was feasible. And if they died in a nearby hospital, they were often interred on its grounds or in a nearby cemetery if they could not be sent home.But the best evidence that there are no missing children comes from TRC/NCTR records and from our understanding of traditional indigenous mortuary practice. Of the 89 memorialized Holy Angels children, only 14 (16%). died less than 80 years ago. The last student died in 1953, 69 years ago. Like most peoples, whether literate or not, the Chippewa/Ojibway/Métis/Cree ethnic groups whose children attended Holy Angels did not maintain detailed multi-generational genealogies. Together with the widespread neglect of existing reserve cemeteries full of long-decayed wooden markers that were never replaced, this helps explain why no band members are frantically looking for missing ancestors who died more than seven decades ago.Siksika Indian community reserve cemetery, Alberta.In sum, there is no proof that any student listed on the Memorial Register for the Holy Angels or any other IRS was not appropriately buried or that their death certificates were not signed by the proper authorities. New archaeological evidence from the former Kamloops Indian Residential School raises more questions about the narrative that 215 “probable burials” of Indigenous children were discovered at the site. The evidence was unearthed by a professional architect with expertise in aerial photography and published by former anthropology professor Hymie Rubenstein in the REAL Indian Residential Schools Newsletter. The architect reported his findings under the pseudonym Kam Res to avoid retaliation. Res’ findings have not been peer-reviewed. Other academics who have raised questions about the Kamloops graves have been cancelled and targeted by the media. Mount Royal University professor Frances Widdowson was removed from her tenured position due to being outspoken on Indigenous issues. Aerial photography and historical documents show that the site where the graves were alleged to have been discovered has been subject to decades of archeological digs and other excavation activity which did not turn up any human remains. The most significant of these digs took place in 1958 when a plot of over 100,000 square feet or 30% of an apple orchard just outside of the residential school was excavated for a sewage retention pond. Aerial photography and historical documents show that the site where the graves were alleged to have been discovered has been subject to decades of archeological digs and other excavation activity which did not turn up any human remains. Other excavations have since taken place. In 1998, Simon Fraser University archaeologists visited the location to monitor construction activity where a water line was dug through the area. No graves were discovered or announced during the dig. Additionally, in 2002, the Simon Fraser University Archaeology Field School excavated the orchard where fifteen pits were dug and no human remains were unearthed. Deep trenches have been cut straight across the orchard and a sewage pond was excavated from the entire southwestern quadrant,” wrote Dr. Rubenstein.Research by Prof. Sarah Beaulieu has claimed that Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) findings indicate 200 “probable burials.” In her study, Beaulieu also relied on oral history and folklore to claim that children had been buried at the site since the late 1940s. Researchers at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University have unveiled a 3D printer “ink” capable of producing printed wooden materials.The technology takes organic “wood derivatives” and develops them into a paste, which is then used as ink by a 3D printer. As the paste dries, it warps into the desired shape.Doron Kam, a PhD student working on the project, told The Times of Israel that the technology contains two main stages.Firstly, organic material is broken down into “wood flour” and then combined with two other organic products which act as a glue.In the second stage, the material is placed in a 3D printer, which proceeds to print a flat, 2D object. In regular tree wood, the structure of the cells determines the shape the wood will warp into as it dries. However, with the Hebrew University’s new technology, scientists can themselves control the cell structure, and therefore control the exact shape that the product will form as it dries and warps.“We are trying to make a material that won’t last forever, that’s what plastic is for. We are not looking for that,” Kam said. The 50,500 new Israelis so far in 2022 contribute to a decade of about 323,000 immigrants to Israel under the Law of Return.Russia provided half of 2022’s new immigrants, with 23,789 documented immigrations. Of those, 7.069 million (74 percent) are Jewish, 2.026 million (21%) are Arab and 498,000 (5%) are neither.The government agency said the population was expected to reach 10 million by the end of 2024, around 15 million by 2048, and 20 million by the end of 2065.Among Jews aged 20 and over in Israel, 45.3 percent define themselves as secular, 19.2% traditional but not very observant, 13.9% are traditional-religious, 10.7% are religious and 10.5% Haredi.The population of Israel grew by around 187,000 people since Rosh Hashanah 2021, at a rate of 1.8%, a slight increase on last year.Throughout the year 177,000 babies were born in Israel.Some 53,000 people died, around 4,000 of them as a result of coronavirus. Almost a quarter of deaths were due to cancer, and a further 13.4% died of heart disease.The past year also saw the arrival of around 59,000 new immigrants to Israel — a jump compared to previous years, fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.Life expectancy for men in Israel stood at 80.5 years and for women 84.6 years.In 1948, when the Jewish state was established, the population of Israel numbered 806,000 people. Through residue analysis of 14th century BCE vessels excavated in a burial pit at central Israel’s Tel Yehud, the team uncovered what is likely the first physical evidence of the use of a psychoactive drug in the world.“This is the first empirical physical evidence of the use of opium in the Levant in the Late Bronze Age,” lead researcher Dr. Vanessa Linares told The Times of Israel Tuesday. “This is the first identifiable without-a-shadow-of-a-doubt opium use in the Levant — and I would say even in the Old World.”Over the past decade of research surrounding the chronology of the dispersion of opium, archaeobotanical studies have identified poppy — the plant from which opium is harvested — at archaeological sites dating to the Neolithic period. Additionally, there are ancient texts talking about opium use as well as ample religious iconography. But until now archaeologists hadn’t found the physical evidence to back it up.The opium residue was found in high-quality ceramic base-ring juglets that were imported from Cyprus and others used in a burial assemblage discovered at Tel Yehud, in a salvage excavation conducted by Israel Antiquities Authority dig director Eriola Jakoel in 2012-2017.A number of Canaanite graves from the Late Bronze Age were discovered and the vessels removed for further residue analysis.Already in the 19th century, scholars had identified base-ring juglets as potential storage vessels for opium because they appear similar in shape to the poppy flower when it is closed and upside down.After organic residue analysis, it is confirmed that opium residue was found in eight vessels collected at Tel Yehud, some local and some imported from Cyprus.The residue detected by California-native Linares records, to date, the oldest proof of psychoactive drug use in the archaeological record, predating the much-publicized Tel Arad cannabis find by about 600 years.As part of her doctoral dissertation, Linares completed the vessels’ chemical analysis under the direction of Prof. Ronny Neumann of the Weizmann Institute. The discovered chemical markers for opium and their implications were then applied to the archaeological context of the dig, as well as the geopolitical situation of the Levant during the 14th century BCE, through the guidance of Prof. Oded Lipschits and Prof. Yuval Gadot of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Archaeology.The IAA’s Jakoel and Dr. Ron Be’eri also contributed to the resultant research study, “Opium trade and use during the Late Bronze Age: Organic residue analysis of ceramic vessels from the burials of Tel Yehud, Israel,” which was published in July in the journal Archaeometry.Using Occam’s razor, Linares believes the origin of the opium is Asia Minor. The drug was likely shipped to Cyprus where it was redistributed into the base-ring juglets and then shipped to the Holy Land. During this era, Egypt, which also imported opium from Asia Minor, also produced a local crop in poppy fields in Thebes called opium thebaicum and thebaine.However, due to the costs of transportation, Linares believes it is unlikely the Tel Yehud stash originated there. Instead, it likely came from modern-day Turkey.What was likely imported from Egypt, however, was opium’s ritualistic use. According to the Archaeometry article, “During the Late Bronze Age, the religious–social structure in Canaan changed and became more heterogeneous compared to the Canaanite society of the Middle Bronze Age. After the fall of the Hyksos fortresses in the Delta region of the Nile there was an invasion by the pharaohs of Egypt into the Levant during the reign of pharaohs Amenhotep I and Thutmose III (18th dynasty). Subsequently, the southern Levant was largely subject to Egyptian political control that greatly influenced Canaanite culture and religion.“During the 14th and 13th centuries BCE, the Egyptian and Canaanite religions merged. Egyptian-style tombs and temples were built throughout the land of Canaan and Canaanite deities also influenced the Egyptian religion.”In Egypt, there was a practice of burial assemblages, perhaps gifts for the gods, perhaps for the use of the deceased. The opium was most likely used in a number of ways: for medicinal, cultic and ritualistic purposes, according to the article.“In Egypt, opium was reserved for priests and warriors, for ritualistic practices and priests, and very possibly for the top echelon of society,” said Linares.Perhaps, Linares said, the buried individual would need the opium to endure his transition to the afterlife, or maybe it was used for ritualistic purposes by the priests themselves. Or it could have been used by the mourners to ease their emotional pain over the loss of the deceased.Said the IAA’s Be’eri in a press release, “The pottery vessels that had been placed within the graves were used for ceremonial meals, rites and rituals performed by the living for their deceased family members. The dead were honored with foods and drinks that were either placed in the vessels, or consumed during a feast that took place over the grave, at which the deceased was considered a participant.“It may be that during these ceremonies, conducted by family members or by a priest on their behalf, participants attempted to raise the spirits of their dead relatives in order to express a request, and would enter an ecstatic state by using opium. Alternatively, it is possible that the opium, which was placed next to the body, was intended to help the person’s spirit rise from the grave in preparation for the meeting with their relatives in the next life.”Linares added, “I think you can say whatever you’d like in a cultic context and it could be true. In many ways, it the wild, wild west when it comes to cultic contexts.”Likewise, she said she is not ruling out the possibility that it was used regularly in everyday life. “Perhaps when we excavate more, we’ll find juglets and residue of it in houses.”For this opium study, the vessels were sampled in conditions as pristine as possible, from the base or near the base. The article says that to prevent contamination, nitrile gloves were worn at all times during the handling of the vessels, and pliers were routinely cleaned with dichloromethane.Linares is one of two researchers in Israel who is expert on residue analysis. (The other is Ayala Amir, a doctoral student in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures at Tel Aviv University, who discovered that vanilla-flavored wine was popular in the City of David.)-Today, the pair are called out to dig sites to take samples from promising vessels even before they are unearthed.She describes it as “forensics work — you have a crime scene and they block off the area. Forensics work, but 3,000 years ago.”In the course of her MA and then PhD and post-doc in Israel 10 years ago, Linares and Amir developed a protocol of best practices for archaeologists to follow when encountering intact vessels. The idea is whenever an archaeologist is excavating and finds something that is interesting, they should be called to the site to take the sample from the site itself.“I believe this is the reason why, for this very fact, that we were able to find the opium residue,” she said. Morphinan — an opioid alkaloid — is very volatile, she explained, and had the juglet been sitting in storage or been touched by people, the molecule would have disappeared prior to analysis.“We sample the vessel right when it is coming out of the ground — even before it is taken out,” she said, which eliminates the possibility of contamination.There is a huge backlog of interesting vessels, but Linares said that to reduce contaminating variables, she will only work on objects that are directly taken from the field.“Hopefully we’ll soon see more ‘exotic’ things,” she said. “We just don’t know what we’ll find and we’ll start to see a lot of things we haven’t found before.”

A senior Israel Defense Forces officer said Wednesday that the military has foiled dozens of attempted Iranian cyberattacks — mostly on Israeli civilian infrastructure — over the past year.Israel and Iran have been engaged for years in a largely clandestine cyberwar that occasionally bubbles to the surface. Israeli officials accused Iran of attempting to hack Israel’s water system in 2020, while Iran has also blamed Israel for cyberattacks on the country’s infrastructure.“In the past year, the IDF thwarted dozens of Iranian cyberattack attempts. In recent years, the friction between Israel and its enemies has intensified,” the officer said, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity.The military identified an increase of some 70 percent in Iranian cyberattacks against Israel in the past year.“The IDF and the [cyber] defense community have developed breakthrough capabilities to defend against the enemy,” the senior officer added.Israel’s cyber defense community includes the National Cyber Directorate, the Defense Ministry’s director of security of the defense establishment, and units within the Shin Bet security agency, Mossad spy agency and the IDF.According to assessments by the IDF’s C4I Corps, there are more than 20 Iranian cyber units, of which at least 10 operate against Israel.The IDF believes that one of Iran’s main goals when it comes to cyberattacks is to instill fear within Israeli society. 27 And he ( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant (PEACE TREATY) with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE ANIMAL SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
