THE MIDEAST HEATS UP.

THE MIDEAST HEATS UP.

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun,(HEATING UP-SOLAR ECLIPSES) and in the moon,(MAN ON MOON-LUNAR ECLIPSES) and in the stars;(ASTEROIDS ETC) and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear,(TORNADOES,HURRICANES,STORMS) and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:(DESTRUCTION) for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING (BUT WILL NOT KILL EVERY BODY WITH WATER)(BUT 50% OF EARTHS POPULATION DIE (4 BILLION PEOPLE) FROM NUCLEAR WAR)(THE BIBLE SAYS BY FIRE OR ATOMIC BOMBS THIS TIME)
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

EZEKIEL 32:6-9
6  I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
9  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator and baby murderers by abortion) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

2 Peter 3:6-7 Amplified Bible (AMP) (HOT SUN, NUKES ETC)
6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

China logs hottest August in more than six decades.

Beijing, Sept 6 (AFP) Sep 06, 2024-China logged its hottest August in more than six decades last month, its national weather service said, after the country endured a summer of extreme weather and heatwaves across much of its north and west.China is the leading emitter of the greenhouse gas emissions scientists say are driving global climate change and making extreme weather events more frequent.Beijing has pledged to bring planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions to a peak by 2030 and to net zero by 2060.And on Thursday, the China Meteorological Administration said in a statement that: "China experienced prolonged and extreme high temperatures" in August."The national average temperature was the highest for the same period since 1961," it added. The national average temperature in August was 22.6 degrees Celsius (72.68 degrees Fahrenheit) -- 1.5C higher than the same period in a typical year, Jia Xiaolong, deputy director of the National Climate Center, was quoted as saying."Northern regions experienced frequent and highly destructive rainstorms, while large-scale heatwaves persisted in the southern regions," Jia said."Nineteen national weather stations recorded daily maximum temperatures that either matched or exceeded historical records," he said. The record breaking figures followed another report from the weather service on Sunday that average air temperatures last month in eight provinces, regions and cities "ranked the hottest for the same period" since records began. They included the megacity of Shanghai, the provinces of Jiangsu, Hebei, Hainan, Jilin, Liaoning and Shandong as well as the northwest region of Xinjiang, the weather service said.A further five provinces chalked up their second-hottest August, while seven more endured their third-hottest.Chinese weather authorities had also said July was the country's hottest month since records began, state media reported, as extreme temperatures persist across large parts of the globe.Extreme heat has seared much of East Asia this summer.Japan also on Monday said that its long-term average temperature between June and August was 1.76C above the standard value -- equalling the level seen in summer 2023 -- the highest since statistics started being kept in 1898.

Super Typhoon Yagi threatens southern China.

Hong Kong, Sept 6 (AFP) Sep 06, 2024-Super typhoon Yagi on Friday moved towards China's island province of Hainan, as authorities prepared for what could be the strongest storm to hit the country's southern coast in a decade. The typhoon was expected to make landfall later on Friday along the coastal areas from Hainan -- a popular holiday destination -- to neighbouring Guangdong province, China's state-run Xinhua news agency said, citing authorities. The ministry of water resources on Thursday raised its emergency response to flooding in both provinces to the third-highest tier."Yagi is likely to be the strongest typhoon to hit China's southern coast since 2014, making flood and prevention work very challenging," Xinhua said, according to a meeting held by flood officials.Packing wind speeds of more than 240 kilometres (149 miles) per hour, the typhoon "is equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane", according to NASA Earth Data.In Hong Kong, which experienced heavy rains overnight as Yagi passed within 400 kilometres, the city's third-highest typhoon warning will be in place until 12:40 pm (0440 GMT).Trading at Hong Kong's stock exchange was suspended Friday, while schools remained closed and public transportation across the finance hub was limited.Authorities said three people were injured, but the damage was limited as rains continued to pelt the city Friday.Southern China is frequently hit during the summer and autumn seasons by typhoons that form in the warm oceans east of the Philippines and then travel west. But climate change has made tropical storms more unpredictable while increasing their intensity -- bringing heavy rains and violent gusts that lead to flash floods and coastal damage, experts say.Earlier this week, Yagi had triggered floods and landslides on the main Philippine island of Luzon and killed at least 13 people. After moving through southern China, it will head for Vietnam, on course to hit the northern and north-central regions around the famed UNESCO heritage site Halong Bay on Saturday.Vietnamese authorities have already urged around 2,200 tourists on coastal islands to return to the mainland on Thursday, and mobilised more than 2,700 military personnel to help typhoon preparation.burs-hol/dhc/mca

FEARFUL SIGHTS AND GREAT SIGNS FROM HEAVEN

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Asteroid detected heading for Earth burns up in ‘spectacular fireball’ before impact-This is just the ninth asteroid that humankind has ever spotted before impact, ESA says-Vishwam Sankaran-SEPT 4,24

A tiny asteroid headed for the Earth has burned up in a “spectacular fireball” over the Philippines, the European Space Agency (ESA) said. The space rock, measuring only about a metre (3ft) in size, had eluded discovery and was spotted by research technologist Jacqueline Fazekas at Arizona’s Catalina Sky Survey only on Wednesday morning.Labelled as 2024 RW1, the asteroid was predicted to burn up in the atmosphere, posing no risk to people on the ground.Several agencies and amateur space observers, including Nasa’s Planetary Defense coordination office, confirmed that the harmless asteroid burned up over the Philippines around midnight local time (4.40pm UTC Wednesday).A few pictures and videos of 2024 WR1 ☄️, while waiting for more physical properies of the small near Earth asteroid and associated fireball...https://t.co/1Yycwvd8b4 pic.twitter.com/fCXeIhDjo4— IMO Meteor Org. (@IMOmeteors) September 4, 2024-Such small sized asteroids strike Earth frequently but are rarely noticed before impact.“Nearby tropical storm Yagi/Enteng will make fireball observations difficult,” ESA had said. But clearer weather ensured people near the Luzon Island in the Philippines could spot the burning space rock, with many sharing photos and videos of the spectacular event on social media.“This is just the ninth asteroid that humankind has ever spotted before impact,” the ESA posted on X. Planetary defence systems to detect and track near-Earth asteroids posing potential risk to the planet have become a priority in recent times.☄️💥Woah! Newly discovered 1-1.5m asteroid 2024 RW1 (spotted by near-Earth asteroid hunters in the US) burns up above the Philippines just hours after it was first seen. This asteroid wasn’t a risk. But if it was, a duck-and-cover warning was possible. pic.twitter.com/Fht4yqRsB-Dr Robin George Andrews 🌋☄️ (@SquigglyVolcano) September 4, 2024-Space agencies, including Nasa, are testing methods to tackle such life-threatening asteroids.Nasa’s 2022 Dart mission crashed a rocket travelling at about 6.6kmps into the football stadium-sized asteroid Dimorphous to test the feasibility of deflecting such space rocks from their future Earth-bound trajectories.China is also planning a mission to deflect an asteroid by 2030.While large space rocks on trajectory towards Earth pose a serious threat to the planet, even smaller ones that elude detection can cause significant damage to life and property.Over a decade ago, a 20m-meteor travelling at over 18kmps exploded over Russia’s Chelyabinsk city, causing a massive explosion with the energy of more than 30 atomic bombs. The meteor’s airburst injured more than 1,500 people from shattered glass, leaving buildings damaged. While scientists worldwide work to catalogue all asteroids over 1km in size, there is a chance a smaller one may slip through the net once in a while.Nasa is planning to launch a new infrared telescope called the NEO Surveyor to look for such space rocks near Earth.

ArchaeologyResearch shows Roman siege likely lasted just a few weeks-Masada legend upended: ‘The Romans came, saw and conquered, quickly and brutally’-The costly Roman operation was likely undertaken only after Masada-based Jewish forces raided nearby Ein Gedi and disrupted production of balsam, a precious commodity, TAU prof says-By Gavriel Fiske-Today, 1:05 am-SEP 6,24

The main details of the famous 1st-century Roman siege on Masada are extremely well-known: The years-long Roman soldiers’ encampment below the walls, the Jewish rebels’ last stand after the destruction of Jerusalem and then their suicide pact as the Romans finally breached the walls. The events have become part of Israel’s cultural narrative of resilience and nationalism, promulgated by history textbooks, Zionist education projects and obligatory visits to the desert fortress, an Israeli national park. However, recent research by a team of Tel Aviv University archaeologists may upend the Masada legend by asserting that the siege likely lasted just a few weeks and not years. Likewise, the primary motivation for the Romans in assaulting Masada wasn’t to defeat the last holdout of the Jewish rebellion but rather to preserve the supply of lucrative balsam, a perfume produced in nearby Ein Gedi.“The important question is: Why did they decide to besiege Masada? Until recently, the Masada siege has been looked at through Jewish eyes, but the decision to send soldiers was a Roman one,” said Dr. Guy Stiebel, senior lecturer in Tel Aviv University’s Department of Archaeology and Near Eastern Cultures, speaking to The Times of Israel by phone.Stiebel, who has led a series of excavations at Masada since 2017 as head of the  Neustadter Masada Expedition, authored, together with Dr. Hai Ashkenazi of TAU and the Israel Antiquities Authority and Ph.D. students Omer Ze’evi-Berger and Boaz Gross, “The Roman siege system of Masada: The paper presents a first thorough data-driven study of the well-preserved Roman stone fortifications and camps around Masada, based on high-tech surveying and analysis methodologies.By comparing the volume and design of the Roman fortifications with carefully sourced human workload calculations, the researchers determined that the Romans built the siege fortifications around Masada in only 11-16 days and were able to breach the fortress shortly thereafter.“Based on our findings we argue that the Roman siege of Masada took a few weeks at the most. As empires throughout history have done, the Romans came, saw and conquered, quickly and brutally quelling the uprising in this remote location,” Stiebel said.“We know that there were 6-8,000 Roman soldiers. And we have data and charts showing how many stones young soldiers can move in a day,” Stiebel explained on the phone. He noted that the manpower information came from sources such as Roman engineering records describing projections for building projects and WWII-era US Army studies that had recruits lift and move stones to measure their physical fitness.“The data is very clear. We are talking about a very short period to build the siege,” he said.Stiebel explained that while the three-year duration of the siege is now part of the common story of Masada, this figure was only put forth by historians in the 1960s, based on an assumption that after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, the remaining rebels fled straight to Masada, pursued by the Romans, only to be destroyed in 73 CE.Crucially, a specific duration for the siege wasn’t mentioned by Josephus, the Jewish-Roman historian whose writings are the major source of information about Masada and the Jewish Revolt, Stiebel said. The other major argument for a shorter siege is the archaeological record around the Roman camp, which shows none of the evidence for a long stay by the Roman soldiers, he said.If they had been encamped there for years, there would be extensive trash piles, food and animal remains, discarded artifacts, graves and other signs such as those found in other long-term Roman camps, but there isn’t, “and this clearly shows us that this episode was a short one,” Stiebel explained. The particular logistics of Masada, a deep desert fortress whose closest source of water is Ein Gedi, which lies a half day’s march away, also support the theory that the siege was “dramatically shorter” than what was commonly believed, Stiebel said. The Roman army’s modus operandi was, “We came, we saw, we conquered. That is how imperial armies work. The clear interest of an empire is to be as quick as it can. There is a huge cost if you send thousands of soldiers, you need to supply them and their animals,” he said.Precious balsam-The Jewish rebels at Masada were called “Sicarii” by Josephus, but Sicarii means “bandits,” Stiebel explained.“We are used to calling them ‘zealots,’ but a lot of different kinds of people came up there,” he said.Instead of a group of Jewish religious zealots and rebel warriors making a last stand, the group who gathered at Masada seems to have been a diverse group of refugees, “fleeing far away from the Romans,” Stiebel said. The Jews at Masada were not a trained, equipped army, as shown by the nature of the Roman fortifications at Masada, which weren’t built to defend the soldiers from sorties, missiles or other attacks from the fortress, the study showed. But the dominant faction at Masada was indeed “the bandits,” who, as noted by Josephus, sometime after the destruction of Jerusalem went down from Masada to Ein Gedi in a raid, killing hundreds of Jewish workers at the balsam plantation there and disrupting production of the precious spice. It was an effective raid designed to damage Roman interests in the region.Balsam, produced by the sap of certain trees, “was a luxury product, like modern perfumes that come in very small, expensive bottles. And there was a big demand for this,” Stiebel said. Balsam was a true precious commodity in the ancient world and the Ein Gedi plantation had been coveted by historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Cleopatra.“The moment that they damaged the balsam production, they affected empire finances… We know that the revolt happened during a period of weakness in the Roman Empire. They needed money. And it seems [the raid] crossed a red line for the Romans,” he said, so they sent their soldiers to destroy the perpetrators.Instead of being just an effort to destroy the last pocket of Jewish resistance to Roman rule, Stiebel said, “one of the main reasons was economical. We have to ask, what happened suddenly, three years after the fall of Jerusalem, to make them suddenly remember Masada?”Culture wars-Since the study results were publicized last week, there have been hundreds of “interesting reactions” on Hebrew social media and news sites, Stiebel said.“The narrative of Masada, the Great Jewish Revolt, the siege, and the tragic end as related by Flavius Josephus, have all become part of Israeli DNA and the Zionist ethos… The duration of the siege is a major element in this narrative, suggesting that the glorious Roman army found it very difficult to take the fortress and crush its defenders,” he noted in a prepared statement about the research.People feel the research changes that iconic Masada story and reduces the narrative of the Jews holding out for so long against the Romans. “There are a lot of political and personal reactions,” he said. The new research at Masada “doesn’t necessarily change” the core aspects of the Masada story, he stressed, just presents new, scientific information that brings deeper historical understanding. Furthermore, the study results are in line with other research “from the last 20 years” that has questioned the duration of the siege.Various historians and research over the years have also questioned Josephus’s account that all the Jewish holdouts committed suicide rather than be taken by the Romans, another deeply symbolic aspect of the Masada narrative. But for the moment, Stiebel and his team “aren’t dealing with that question.”“It is interesting how personally people take this. These are events that happened 2,000 years ago!” Seibel said. “Masada is a kind of mirror into Israeli society – how we look at Masada shows a lot of the political and social changes society has undergone.”

Israel signs global treaty to address risks of artificial intelligence-The treaty, spearheaded by the Council of Europe and signed by 57 states, including the US, is a legal framework to tackle harmful and discriminatory outcomes of AI systems-By Sharon Wrobel-5 September 2024, 8:07 pm

Israel has joined the United States, United Kingdom, and several other European Union countries in signing an international treaty on how to harness the use of artificial intelligence for the common good while ensuring that democracy, human rights, and the rule of law are not undermined.“Israel’s signing of the first global convention for artificial intelligence emphasizes our commitment to responsible innovation and human rights values,” said Innovation, Science and Technology Minister Gila Gamliel. “This convention places Israel as a full partner in the creation of international policy in the field in the coming years and will place us at the forefront of the world’s advanced countries.”It is the first binding international treaty on AI – signed by 57 countries, including 46 Council of Europe member states – now waiting to be ratified by the states. Once ratified, the signatory countries will be accountable for any harmful and discriminatory outcomes of AI systems. That’s as lawmakers around the world are contemplating regulation of the technology and how to deal with safety issues and other misuse and dangers it already poses. The Council of Europe’s convention on AI signed on Thursday was created to formulate global fundamental principles, rules, and standards to ensure that the deployment of the groundbreaking and fast-developing technology is compatible with human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.The move comes as there are concerns that Israel is falling behind the US and Europe when it comes to pulling in investments in startups that develop AI-based technologies amid the ongoing war with the Hamas terror group.Artificial intelligence — the tech that gives computers the ability to learn fast — has been around since the 1950s. But over the last decade, it has been enjoying a renaissance made possible by the higher computational power of chips and the vast amount of data available online.Advances in the field have enabled computers to analyze datasets and find useful patterns to solve problems, with the machine at times outwitting the human brain. AI and machine learning are already used for a wide range of applications, from facial recognition to the detection of diseases in medical images to global competitions in games and warfare.Speaking at a conference in Tel Aviv this week, AI expert Prof. Amnon Shashua, co-founder of Israeli startup AI21 Labs, said that the advances in generative AI to create images, improve data research and text, and other tools are very nice and useful, but do not yet constitute a revolution. AI21 Labs is a natural language processing (NLP) company, which has the vision to bring generative AI to the masses and competes against OpenAI.“It is a technological wave that has the potential to imitate human intelligence in solving complex problems in all areas of human knowledge, instead of human experts,” said Shashua. “Among those who are involved in working on AI advanced models, there is a sentiment that it is coming around the corner.”“The very fast advancement of these models creates a sentiment that in the near future, these systems will not only be able to summarize articles but solve problems like a human expert, and then everything changes meaning that the relationship between us and machines is going to undergo a dramatic change,” he added.Meanwhile, nations are investing huge amounts of money in the field, as it is expected to be the heart of technology going forward and a key to economic growth worldwide. While AI technology is touted as having the potential to transform the world we live in the coming years, the big promise potentially poses also catastrophic risks, could do significant harm, and undermine democracy, many experts behind the development of AI systems have been warning.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been urging that government intervention will be critical to mitigating the risks of increasingly powerful AI systems. Altman has proposed the need for an international monitoring regulator along the lines of the United Nations nuclear agency to crack down on harmful AI use.Among the concerns is the potential abuse of AI in critical infrastructure, education, human resources, and public order. The evolvement of generative AI (GenAI), which can create complex content that resembles human creativity, in the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has led to the use of the tool to create deepfakes, that could lead to the online dissemination of false and misleading claims about the Holocaust; to cheat on homework assignments; spread falsehoods; and violate copyright protections. Beyond that, the concern is that advanced AI systems in the future could manipulate humans into ceding control.“Despite the current war and all the pain and challenges that it brings, we need to remain attuned to, and involved with, international processes and organizations,” said Deputy Attorney General Dr. Gilad Noam. “Just as importantly, we want to signal to our allies and friends across the globe that we share a common desire, namely: to foster innovation while protecting human rights.”The treaty obligates the signatories to ensure that AI systems are not used to “undermine the integrity, independence and effectiveness of democratic institutions and processes, including the principle of the separation of powers, respect for judicial independence and access to justice.”The legal framework also imposes a general duty on the states to monitor the outcomes of AI systems and take measures to protect human rights in accordance with international and national law, including the protection of the privacy rights of individuals and their personal data are legally protected. To comply with the standards of the treaty, the signatory states will be required to act to identify, evaluate, and minimize risks posed by AI systems, based on a risk assessment that weighs the practical and potential consequences for human rights, democracy and the rule of law. However, the treaty did not list any sanctions or fines in cases of non-compliance and raises questions about its effective enforceability.

US disinformation researcher laments 'incredible witch hunt' By Anuj CHOPRA with Alex PIGMAN.

Washington (AFP) Sept 5, 2024-Understanding disinformation has emerged as a lightning rod in the United States ahead of the November election, with academics and think-tanks facing lawsuits by right-wing groups and subpoenas from a Republican-led congressional committee. The researchers are accused of colluding with the government to censor conservative speech online under the guise of fighting disinformation. They deny the claims and denounce the sweeping offensive as an intimidation campaign.AFP spoke with Renee DiResta, author of "Invisible Rulers: The people who turn lies into reality."She was formerly with the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO), a non-partisan disinformation research project.Following the Republican-led investigation, her contract, along with those of many other staffers, was not renewed, leading to reports that the group was being dismantled under political pressure. The interview was edited for length and clarity.QUESTION:What pressure did the Stanford Observatory face?ANSWER:We received a letter and then a subpoena from Jim Jordan, who heads a (Republican-led) committee that asked us for our emails with the executive branch of the United States and with tech platforms. It was a very broad request ostensibly to investigate whether there had been some sort of cabal by which the government was telling us to tell tech platforms to take information or content down. That never happened. We turned over copious amounts of material, several colleagues who had worked on this project sat for multi hour private interviews with the committee. There was nothing found to bolster their theory, but it created extensive costs in terms of time and lawyer costs. Students were targeted, doxxed and harassed. Ultimately, Stanford made the determination to not continue to pursue rapid response election research and many of our contracts weren't renewed for funding reasons.QUESTION:What impact has this had on election disinformation research?ANSWER:There has been a chilling effect. This idea that inquiries from congressional committees are shutting down research or making students afraid to pursue them because they're afraid of being harassed is remarkable. We are one institution among many. I saw a statistic that something like 91 subpoenas had gone out from this committee. It's just an incredible witch hunt and the cost of that is that less resourced institutions may choose to not fight, to just comply as quickly as possible. There has been a sense that doing work on certain topics is going to attract unwanted attention, and so you shouldn't do work on those topics. That's terrible. Academia is supposed to be about asking hard questions, doing complicated research, doing things that perhaps industry might not want to take on, or that government is not positioned to take.QUESTION:How do you deal with personal attacks? You have been branded "CIA Renee" by trolls insinuating that you have secret ties with the US intelligence agency.ANSWER:I've dealt with idiots on the internet for a decade now. People have their opinions.I am not troubled by the harassment of the trolls online. I'm troubled by the fact that the United States government (through the congressional committee) is facilitating it at this point with misleading investigations, misleading reports, cherry picked sentences, leaked documents and badly framed stories that bear no relation to the truth. That I think is the problem that we need to be focusing on. That is an affront to free speech.QUESTION:Many tech platforms have scaled back content moderation. Are they equipped to tackle the flood of election disinformation?ANSWER:There's this belief that if you just label something or take it down, you solve the problem. You don't.We can debate the areas where the platforms are not doing enough, because there certainly are some. But you also can't solve a human problem with technology. People are going to share rumors. To address disinformation, platforms have traditionally appended a label, a fact check perhaps (but) it's not clear how well the labels work. One of the things that we've seen is that we need more proactive content participation from the institutions. We need election officials out there proactively countering rumors.

WARN THE PEOPLE-WW3

EZEKIEL 33:1-6
1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2  Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3  If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4  Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5  He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
6  But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

DANIEL 11:40-45 (WW3 BREAKDOWN)
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south( EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR IN ISRAEL) and the king of the north (RUSSIA AND MUSLIM HORDES OF EZEK 38+39) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.(JORDAN)
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
44 But tidings out of the east(CHINA 2ND WAVE OF WW3) and out of the north(RUSSIA, MUSLIMS WHATS LEFT FROM WAVE 1) shall trouble him:(EU DICTATOR IN ISRAEL) therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.( 1/3RD OF EARTHS POPULATION)
45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

12 And he will be a wild man;(RIOTS-BURNING-MURDEROUUS RAGE) his hand will be against every man,(ISLAM WANTS WORLD DOMINATION) and every man's hand against him;(DEFENDING THEMSELVES) and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.(ARAB/MUSLIMS LIVE WITH ISRAELIS)

ISAIAH 33:1,18-19 Woe to thee that spoilest,(destroys) and thou wast not spoiled;(destroyed) and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil,(destroy) thou shalt be spoiled;(destroyed) and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.
18 Thine heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?
19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.(ISLAM MURDERS IN THE NAME OF THEIR MOON GOD ALLAH)

ISAIAH 14:12-23
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, (SATAN) son of the morning! (HEBREW MEANS CRESCENT MOON ANGEL-ISLAM OVIOUSLY)(SATAN IS THE GOD OF ISLAM) how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Ecclesiastes 9:10
10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

EZEKIEL 31:10-17
10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;
11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.
12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:
14To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.(HELL).
15Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.
16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
17They also went down into hell with him unto [them that be] slain with the sword; and [they that were] his arm, [that] dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
18To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword. This [is] Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

EZEKIEL 32:17-32
17 It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth [day] of the month, [that] the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, [even] her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.
19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.
20 They shall fall in the midst of [them that are] slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.
21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
22 Asshur [is] there and all her company: his graves [are] about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:
23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
24 There [is] Elam (IRAN) and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves [are] round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of [them that be] slain.
26 There [is] Meshech, Tubal,(RUSSIA) (GERMANY, TURKEY) and all her multitude: her graves [are] round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
27And they shall not lie with the mighty [that are] fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with [them that are] slain with the sword.
29 There [is] Edom,(JORDAN) her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by [them that were] slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.
30 There [be] the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.
31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, [even] Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.
32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with [them that are] slain with the sword, [even] Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan,(SAUDI-ARABIA) and the merchants of Tarshish,(SPAIN) with all the young lions thereof,(ENGLAND,AND ALL ITS ASSOCIATES-CANADA,AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND, USA, AND WESTERN ENGLISH SPEAKING NATIONS) shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

EZEKIEL 39:11-22
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE) and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300 MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ARMIES)
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

ROMANS 1:26-27
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
GENESIS 7:4
4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

12 This is the family tree of Ishmael son of Abraham, the son that Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maid, bore to Abraham.
13-16 These are the names of Ishmael’s sons in the order of their births: Nebaioth, Ishmael’s firstborn, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah—all the sons of Ishmael. Their settlements and encampments were named after them. Twelve princes with their twelve tribes.

I will support Israel’s right to win. You have to win fast' Vote for me or Israel will be annihilated, Trump says in pitch to Republican Jews-Warning marks intensification of effort to lure Jewish voters, as ex-president fumes they aren’t flocking in larger numbers; he puts colleges on notice for ‘antisemitic propaganda’ By Jacob Magid-Today, 2:25 am-SEPT 6,24

If US Vice President Kamala Harris wins the White House, Israel will cease to exist, former president Donald Trump told a gathering of Republican Jews on Thursday.“I will work with you to make sure Israel is with us for thousands of years,” the Republican nominee said in a satellite address to the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual conference in Las Vegas. “You’re not going to have an Israel if she becomes president… Israel will no longer exist.”The warning appeared to mark an intensification of Trump’s campaign to lure Jewish voters, as he continued to express frustration that they aren’t flocking to him in larger numbers due to his Mideast policy.“I don’t understand how anybody can support them — and I say it constantly — if you had them to support and you were Jewish, you have to have your head examined,” Trump told the RJC crowd, referring to his Democratic rivals. “They’ve been very bad to you.”“I can say honestly that we got 25 percent of the vote, 26 percent after four years after I’ve done more for Israel than anyone. This year we will probably be around a 50% mark,” Trump said. The most recent polling of American Jews was done in June, before US President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, but it still put support for Trump at 24%.Reprising his oft-criticized habit of conflating US Jews with Israelis, he told the crowd of Americans, “Right now, what you are going through is horrible that you have to go through that, with all the death, destruction and waste and ruining a civilization,” he said, without clarifying. The crowd did not appear to mind, cheering Trump enthusiastically throughout.“You’ll never survive if they get in, and our country America will never survive if they get in,” he said, apparently trafficking in a dual loyalty trope that he has used in the past.He claimed Jews felt safe in public while he was in office, ignoring a documented spike in antisemitic incidents during his presidency.“If Kamala Harris wins, terrorist armies will wage an unceasing war to drive Jews out of the Holy Land,” he claimed.Trump opened his remarks by offering his condolences to the family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an American-Israeli who was one of the six hostages recovered by the IDF last week after they were executed by their Hamas captors in a tunnel underneath the Gaza city of Rafah. Trump claimed that Harris and Joe Biden have “sought to cast blame for these deaths on Israel,” even though both issued statements placing responsibility squarely on Hamas.Biden did say on Sunday that he doesn’t think Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is doing enough to secure a hostage deal, joining the criticism voiced by the hostage families publicly and Israel’s security establishment privately. The premier has maintained that pressure should be directed at Hamas.Trump didn’t mention Netanyahu in his speech but did say, “I will support Israel’s right to win [the war]… You have to win and you have to win fast.”The Republican nominee also told the confab that the Palestinian Authority “is not our friend,” defending his decision to cut funding to Ramallah during his term in office, despite historic US backing for the PA.In July, Trump published a letter he received from PA President Mahmoud Abbas in which the latter expressed his outrage over the assassination attempt on the GOP nominee. Trump thanked Abbas for the letter and said he looked forward to brokering peace in the Middle East if elected.“I defunded the Palestinian Authority and choked off the money to Hamas, and we actually defunded, we were paying them a fortune every year, the United States was paying a fortune, and I said ‘we’re not gonna pay it, they’re not our friends and not the friends of Israel,'” he said on Thursday.Ending ‘antisemitic propaganda’ on campus-Turning to anti-Israel protests that have rocked college campuses over the past year, Trump declared that US universities would lose accreditation and federal support over what he described as “antisemitic propaganda” if he is elected to the White House.“Colleges will and must end the antisemitic propaganda or they will lose their accreditation and federal support,” Trump said.In the United States, the federal government does not directly accredit universities but has a role in overseeing the mostly private organizations that give accreditation to colleges.Republicans have said the protests show some Democrats are antisemites who support chaos. Biden has condemned the anti-Israel protests that have praised Hamas, deteriorated into violence or featured the targeting of Jewish students, while also trying to draw a line between hate speech and free speech.Trump also said Thursday he would ban refugee resettlement from “terror-infested” areas like Gaza and arrest “pro-Hamas thugs” who engage in vandalism, an apparent reference to the anti-Israel protesters on campuses and beyond. While Hamas is blacklisted as a terror organization in the US, free speech laws in the country largely defend the ability to express support for hate groups.“When I am president, we will deport the foreign jihad sympathizers and Hamas supporters from within our midst,” he said as the crowd responded with an extended chant of “Trump.”Under Trump and Biden, similar numbers of Palestinians were admitted to the US as refugees. From the fiscal years of 2017 to 2020, the US accepted 114 Palestinian refugees, according to US State Department data, compared with 124 Palestinian refugees from fiscal year 2021 to July 31 of this year.Agencies contributed to this report.

Portland, Maine, city council votes to divest from companies doing business with Israel-Resolution listing dozens of companies passes unanimously following raucous public debate; mayor says vote is meant ‘to send a signal’ to Israel to end warBy Andrew Lapin 5 September 2024, 10:30 pm

JTA — The city council of Portland, Maine voted unanimously on Wednesday evening to divest from companies that do business with Israel, becoming the fourth US city to pass such a measure since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.The resolution, passed after a raucous public comment session in which supporters outnumbered opponents, calls to “divest the City of Portland from all entities complicit in the current and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and occupation of Palestine.”The Portland legislation included a list of dozens of companies from which the city will divest after the law is enacted. Mayor Mark Dion indicated that he will sign it.“I try to align what I believe and try to figure out what is right and just. And I’m going to vote to support this,” Dion, a former sheriff who is also a voting member of the council, said following public comment. He added that while he understood Israel’s “desire for retribution,” he believes that “our role collectively is to grab their shoulder and say, ‘It’s enough. It’s simply enough.’ And pull them away. And that’s sometimes the greatest act of friendship you can do for someone you hold dear, as I hold my friends in the Jewish community.”Dion’s office did not immediately return a request for comment. The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, the local Jewish federation, said it was “outraged, and unbelievably disappointed” at the resolution’s passage.“At this time, we are focused on concrete ways to ensure the Jewish community who lives in and around Portland, Maine feels supported and safe,” chief development officer Ashley Inbar told The Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “We are investigating every possible avenue in front of us to make those goals manifest.”The passage of the resolution marks an escalation of how local governments are addressing the war in Gaza. In the months following October 7, a range of cities passed symbolic resolutions calling for a ceasefire in the war. Now, the Portland measure and others like it are seeking to materially penalize Israel for its military campaign by depriving it of economic investment. The vote also signals that divestment campaigns, once largely the province of university student governments, are gaining traction on the municipal stage, as well. The Jewish federation, which recently announced the hire of its first-ever CEO, had encouraged members to show up to the meeting to oppose the resolution. In a statement prior to the vote, the federation argued it was a “performative gesture” that promotes a “one-sided blame for the conflict.”“We want peace and an end to the war, but demanding that Israel capitulate to Hamas, allowing it to rebuild its terrorist infrastructure, is not pro-peace,” Inbar said during the meeting. She added that the city council “is a municipal body with no standing in matters of international law or foreign policy,” and said that “divestment could have significant economic complications for Portland.”The measure was backed by the Maine chapter of the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace and by the Maine Coalition for Palestine.“We are outraged and grief-stricken by the continued atrocities perpetrated by Israel and fully support our city heeding the call to divest,” the state’s JVP chapter said in a statement on Instagram. The resolution mentions the death toll of Palestinians killed in Gaza since October 7, as well as the number of Palestinians wounded and at risk of famine. It does not mention Hamas, the Israelis killed on October 7 or the Israeli hostages being held in Gaza.“We acknowledge that members of our community are directly impacted by the ongoing violence that’s happening, and we have a duty to voice our concerns and take steps that we can control on the local level,” April Fournier, the councilmember who sponsored the resolution, said during Wednesday’s council discussion on the measure.Portland is not the biggest city by population to endorse such a resolution. The California cities of Richmond and Hayward, which passed similar resolutions earlier this year, are larger. But Portland, the first East Coast city to approve an Israel divestment measure, also marks the first time the largest city in a state — and the center of the state’s Jewish community — has done so.Portland’s council passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire earlier this year. Many municipalities have debated and passed ceasefire resolutions in the months since October 7, but municipal resolutions specifically calling for Israel divestment remain relatively rare. The text of the Portland resolution includes a “Divestment List” of dozens of companies, ranging from well-known businesses including General Electric, Intel, Boeing, Caterpillar and Volvo to Israel-based organizations such as Israel Bonds and the Bank of Jerusalem. It also includes weapons manufacturers such as Northrop Grumman. The local federation claimed that at least 7,000 Portland residents were employed by the listed companies.Local Jews showed up to both support and oppose the resolution during the evening’s public comment session, where supporters of the resolution outnumbered opponents and which the mayor interrupted several times to warn spectators against clapping and whistling. The raucous scene was typical of public meetings nationwide at which Israel-related measures are on the table. The first person who rose to public comment was a Jewish Portlander who voiced support for it, called Israel’s actions in Gaza a “genocide” and said there should not be a Jewish state. Another Jewish speaker, who opposed the resolution, focused his remarks on countering the genocide allegations against Israel; a third, who runs a local venture capital firm that invests in Israel, argued it was a bad business move. Other speakers said they had relatives who had been killed by Israeli settlers.Among the Jewish opponents of the bill was Rabbi Levi Wilansky, who works at the Portland-based Chabad Lubavitch of Maine. Wilansky argued that the resolution was “antisemitic,” saying it suggested that Israel should abandon the hostages held by Hamas. But the mayor was undeterred by the Jewish opposition.“I don’t harbor any fantasy that we’re changing the economic playing field for those who invest in providing arms and supplies to the effort in Gaza,” he said. “I’m voting yes because I think it’s important that we say ‘it’s enough’ and to send a signal, and the conversation will begin.”

Netanyahu: 'There's not a deal in the making, unfortunately' Egypt’s army chief visits Gaza border after Israel says Sissi failed on smuggling-Cairo says Netanyahu trying to hide failures with his comments on need to remain in Philadelphi Corridor; US expresses frustration with PM but blames Hamas for slow progress in talks-By Lazar Berman-and Jacob Magid-5 September 2024, 8:23 pm

Amid public criticism from top Israeli officials this week, Egypt’s army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Ahmed Fathy Khalifa made a surprise visit on Thursday to the country’s border with the Gaza Strip to inspect the security situation, state television reported, citing the army’s spokesperson. The visit was widely seen as an indication of Egypt’s displeasure with recent comments from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior adviser Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who both directly panned Egypt this week for its purported failure to prevent Hamas from smuggling in weapons from the Sinai Peninsula.Unlike Netanyahu, Dermer mentioned Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi by name. He said that he was “not questioning the intentions of the Egyptians,” but rather was “questioning the results.”Egypt pushed back on Israel’s accusations on Thursday, with a “high-ranking Egyptian source” telling Al Qahera al-Ikhbariya that Netanyahu’s statements are unrealistic, and that “he is trying to blame other countries for his failure to achieve his goals in the Gaza Strip.”The Egyptian official also said that recent months have proven that Netanyahu does not care about the return of Israeli hostages if it gets in the way of his personal interests. On Monday, Netanyahu made the case for a permanent Israeli presence on the Gaza-Egypt border, arguing that it was a necessary step to ensure Hamas cannot rearm and rebuild its control after its war with Israel ends. However, Dermer indicated that this demand may not be set in stone and that there could be alternative arrangements in the context of a long-term ceasefire.Cairo has remained vehemently opposed to Israel establishing any form of control over its border route, and on Tuesday protested that by defining the Philadelphi Corridor as a military zone, it would be violating the countries’ 1978 peace accord.Nine years ago, Egypt razed thousands of homes on its side of the border to create a buffer zone with Gaza. Since then, it has said that smuggling is no longer an issue. The accusations against Egypt also angered its regional allies. The UAE’s foreign ministry put out a statement in which it expressed “its full solidarity with the Arab Republic of Egypt in the face of Israeli allegations and claims regarding the Philadelphi Corridor, and strongly condemns and denounces the offensive Israeli statements in this regard, which threaten stability and exacerbate the situation in the region.”Saudi Arabia similarly said it “strongly condemns and denounces” Israel’s comments on the corridor, and accused it of making “futile attempts to justify continued violations of international laws and norms.”According to the Qatari-owned Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news outlet, Netanyahu had told Cairo ahead of his Monday press conference that he was willing to discuss the future of the Gaza-Egypt border in negotiations on the second phase of a deal. He was told, however, that Cairo would accept nothing less than a pledge to withdraw, even if it didn’t happen in the first phase of the deal.Frustrating and difficult-With Netanyahu making his case for remaining in control of the Philadelphi Corridor in press conferences and interviews this week, Washington showed signs of exasperation.A senior Biden administration official said on Wednesday that Netanyahu’s repeated public statements were making things “difficult.”On Thursday, senior US officials eased up on Netanyahu.“Very strong public comments sometimes coexist with residual flexibility, almost always,” US Ambassador Jack Lew said at a Tel Aviv conference.Pressed on whether Netanyahu’s statements have become an obstacle to hostage negotiations, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby responded on Thursday that “the biggest obstacle to getting a ceasefire deal is Hamas.”“They took the damn hostages in the first place,” Kirby said during a press briefing.“As frustrating as it has been at times, and as unhelpful as not just public comments, but even private machinations in the negotiation purposes have been to the closure of the deal, it has not dimmed one bit President Biden’s commitment to trying to see this through,” he added.Hamas’s lead negotiator on Thursday urged Washington to press Israel for a truce in Gaza, and reiterated that the terror group will accept nothing less than a full IDF withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor and the rest of the Strip.“If the US administration and its President Biden really want to reach a ceasefire and complete a prisoner exchange deal, they must abandon their blind bias towards the Zionist occupation and exert real pressure on Netanyahu and his government,” Qatar-based Khalil al-Hayya said, according to a Hamas statement.‘Not close’Speaking to the “Fox and Friends” morning show amid a media blitz this week, Netanyahu said that an agreement to free hostages and pause the war is “not close,” adding, “There is not a deal in the making, unfortunately.”Lew said earlier in the day that “progress continues to be made” on attempts to reach a hostage deal, “including on the key issues.”Lew seemed to indicate that the most intractable topic is not the Philadelphi Corridor: “Negotiations have gotten into the most difficult issues, some of which are not the subject of most of the public discussion.”“The public debate masks where the real difficult issues are,” said Lew at the Institute for National Security Studies. On that point, Netanyahu seemed to agree, stressing in his Fox interview that there are unresolved issues beyond the future of the Philadelphi Corridor.A senior Biden administration official said on Wednesday that a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas was being held up by two remaining obstacles: the list of Palestinian security prisoners Hamas is seeking to free and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Philadelphi Corridor.Netanyahu dispatched Mossad chief David Barnea to Doha on Monday to inform Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani that the IDF is prepared to fully withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor in the second phase of the deal.Of the 251 hostages abducted to Gaza on October 7, 97 are believed to remain in captivity, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF. The bodies of 37 other hostages have been recovered.Hamas executed six hostages last week, days before IDF troops came upon them.NBC News reported on Wednesday that, given the lack of momentum and the murder of hostages, families of captives with American citizenship are petitioning the Biden administration to cut a unilateral deal with Hamas to free their loved ones. However, the father of a US-Israeli held hostage in Gaza told Channel 12 that the report is false.Asked about the report, Netanyahu told Fox that he doesn’t know what was said at a meeting between representatives of the families and Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, but that “I don’t judge the families. They’ve gone through this horrible anguish.”An Israeli source told The Times of Israel on Thursday that Netanyahu’s office is concerned about the possibility of a unilateral US deal, and held an English-language press conference on Wednesday night — which largely repeated points Netanyahu had made to the Israeli press two nights before — in order to convince Washington not to do so.

Accused Hezbollah financier expected to plead guilty in US sanctions evasion case-Prosecutors say Mohammad Bazzi sold real estate in Michigan, then transferred funds abroad; ask judge for hearing this month to facilitate change of plea-By Reuters and ToI Staff 5 September 2024, 8:39 pm

A dual Lebanese-Belgian citizen accused by the United States of financing Lebanese terror group Hezbollah is expected to plead guilty in a criminal case charging him with sanctions evasion and money-laundering conspiracies.Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn said in a court filing on Thursday that lawyers for Mohammad Bazzi told them he wishes to change his plea. Bazzi, 60, pleaded not guilty last year to three felony counts, including attempting to transact with a sanctioned terrorist organization.Bazzi’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The US Treasury Department placed Bazzi on its sanctions list in 2018 over his alleged ties to Hezbollah, which Washington considers a terrorist organization.Prosecutors said Bazzi covertly sold real estate he owned in Michigan and transferred the funds abroad, in violation of those sanctions.Bazzi was extradited to the US in April 2023 from Romania, where he had been arrested two months prior.REWARD! IDF strikes Hezbollah infrastructure posing threat to Israel-1,307 rockets fired from Lebanon in August, more than any month since war started-Kiryat Shmona mayor laments destruction of city, says terrorists must be made afraid to fire at Israel; four drones fired, barrage of five rockets launched at north-By Emanuel Fabian-5 September 2024, 4:20 pm

More rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon in August than in any previous month since war broke out almost a year ago, according to data published by the Shin Bet security agency Thursday. The report said that 1,307 rockets were fired at Israel in August from the northern front, meaning Lebanon and Syria, amounting to just over 40 a day on average, with the vast majority coming from Lebanon.July saw 1,091 rockets, June saw 855, May saw 1,000, April saw 744, March saw 746, February saw 534, and January saw 334, according to the Shin Bet.Exact data was not immediately available for October, November, and December 2023, but the quantity was known to be smaller than in August.By contrast, only 116 rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza in the last month, the report said. The mayor of Kiryat Shmona lamented Thursday that his largely evacuated northern border town had been badly battered by rockets fired by terrorists from Lebanon, with many homes being destroyed.“Unfortunately, every day we have to tell more families that they will not have a home to return to, there are houses that need to be demolished and rebuilt,” Avichai Stern told the Ynet news site.He asked why the lives of northern residents were apparently of lower value than those who lived in the center of the country, apparently referring to the IDF’s preemptive strike last month as Hezbollah was preparing to launch an attack on the Tel Aviv area.“We need to get to a point where [terrorists] are afraid to fire at Kiryat Shmona,” he said.Tens of thousands of residents of northern border communities have been evacuated since the start of the war, displaced from their homes for close to a year. Many accuse the government of not taking enough action against Hezbollah to enable them to return home safely. On Thursday, two suspected drones launched from Lebanon were shot down by air defenses, the Israel Defense Forces said, adding that the two targets were intercepted over Lebanese airspace, and did not cross into Israeli territory. Later on, another two suspected drones were launched from Lebanon at the Western Galilee. The IDF said at least one impacted near Ya’ara. In the afternoon, a barrage of some five rockets were also launched from Lebanon at the Ramot Naftali area, and some of the rockets were intercepted by air defenses, the IDF said. After more than 100 rockets and missiles were launched by Hezbollah at northern Israel on Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces conducted a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon overnight.Fighter jets struck more than 10 Hezbollah rocket launchers and other terror infrastructure, the IDF said, adding that the targets had “posed a threat to Israeli civilians.”The strikes were carried out in southern Lebanon’s Jebbayn, Zawtar ash-Sharqiyah, and Ramyeh, according to the IDF.Separately, the IDF said it had struck a Hezbollah site in southern Lebanon’s Qana in the afternoon-September 5, 2024An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon’s Kafra was also reported Thursday morning in Lebanese media.A short while later, Hezbollah announced the death of operative Abbas Anis Ayoub, killed “on the road to Jerusalem,” its term for members slain in Israeli strikes.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 20 IDF soldiers and reservists. Cops clash with Tel Aviv protesters on 4th night of rallies demanding hostage deal-Demonstrations held outside homes of 8 government ministers as pressure grows to ink an agreement; ToI reporter among those shoved and hit by police at Tel Aviv demonstration-By Noam Lehmann and ToI Staff 5 September 2024, 1:45 pm

Violent clashes between Israel Police and thousands of demonstrators brought to an end the fourth consecutive night of anti-government, pro-hostage deal demonstrations on Tel Aviv’s Begin Street on Wednesday.A group representing people arrested at anti-government demonstrations said at least four protesters were arrested.Police announced the protest was a public nuisance and that drums and megaphones would be confiscated, despite it being an hour before sound pollution laws kicked in.They shoved protesters, violently detaining one after snatching his megaphone, even though he wasn’t using it.One officer shoved a Times of Israel reporter trying to capture the arrest on video, hitting him on the side of the neck and knocking the phone out of his hand.It marked the second time in three days that such an incident had taken place after an officer placed his hand on the throat of another Times of Israel reporter and shoved him backward at a Jerusalem protest on Monday.Protesters demanding a hostages-for-ceasefire deal clash with police as they try to push back the southern perimeter of the area allotted for the demonstration on Tel Aviv's Begin Street. Crowds gathered at the homes of Science and Technology Minister Gila Gamliel, Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Education Minister Yoav Kisch, Minister without portfolio Vice Prime Minister Aryeh Deri, Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli, Energy Minister Eli Cohen, Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.Earlier in the day, the Hostages Family Forum called on Netanyahu to remove his yellow ribbon pin, accusing the premier of faking his support for their cause while shunning his commitment to secure the release of their loved ones.“The yellow ribbon pin is worn by anyone who wants to express unreserved support for the return of the hostages and sympathy for the families of the hostages whose loved ones have been abandoned to Hamas in Gaza for 334 days,” the forum said in a statement.“The forum reminds the prime minister that leaders, public figures and citizens from all over the world wear the pin with the great hope that it will be removed as soon as possible, in anticipation of the return of the 101 hostages who were abandoned on his watch — the living for rehabilitation and the murdered and the dead for burial — and that wearing it indicates an uncompromising moral commitment to their return and not to abandon them,” the forum said.“Therefore, the forum demands that the prime minister remove it from the lapel of his suit and stop using the pin as an illusion of support when in practice he is not doing enough to return them.”Ninety-seven of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas during the October 7 terror onslaught remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF.Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November, and four hostages were released before that. Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they tried to escape their captors.Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.

At least 6 Palestinian gunmen killed in IDF drone strikes, clashes in West Bank-Military says it carried out several airstrikes on gunmen amid ongoing counterterrorism raid in Tubas area; one identified as son of notorious terrorist Zakaria Zubeidi-By Emanuel Fabian-5 September 2024, 10:51 amUpdated at 1:49 pm

At least six Palestinian gunmen were killed in drone strikes and clashes with Israeli troops in the Tubas area of the northern West Bank early Thursday, authorities said. The Israel Defense Forces said it had carried out a drone strike in the Far’a camp just before 2 a.m., and later, at around 4 a.m., said it carried out three more strikes in the city of Tubas. The IDF said the strikes targeted Palestinian gunmen who were shooting and hurling explosive devices at troops during a new raid in the area. The Palestinian Authority health ministry said that five men were killed in the strikes in Tubas, and local media reported that a sixth Palestinian was shot dead in Far’a.The ministry named the five Palestinians killed in the strike in Tubas as Ahmed Abu Dawas, 24, Mohammed Abu Juma, 30, Qusay Abd al-Razeq, 26, Mohammed Abu Zagha, 23, and Mohammed Zubeidi, 21.Mohammed Zubeidi was the son of notorious terrorist Zakaria Zubeidi, who in September 2021 escaped from Gilboa Prison along with five other high-security prisoners, leading Israeli security forces on a two-week manhunt before being caught. The IDF said that the younger Zubeidi was a “prominent terrorist from the Jenin area” who participated in shooting attacks against Israeli towns close to the West Bank security barrier, as well as other attacks on troops. The other four gunmen killed in Tubas were also involved in shooting attacks, the IDF added.Meanwhile, in the Far’a camp, the IDF said a drone targeted a group of armed Palestinians who were hurling explosive devices at troops, and separately, members of the Israel Prison Service’s elite Metzada Unit killed a gunman who was armed with a bomb. The IDF has been carrying out a major operation in the northern West Bank since August 28. The operation — internally dubbed “Summer Camps” by the army — began with simultaneous raids on Jenin, Tulkarem and the Far’a camp near Tubas, with the goal of dismantling Iran-backed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror networks in the three areas of the northern West Bank. The military said Thursday that it began a new raid overnight in Tubas and the nearby Far’a camp, as well as a separate operation in Jericho. So far, according to the IDF, more than 36 gunmen have been killed in the operation, among them the head of Hamas in Jenin and the head of Islamic Jihad in the Tulkarem area. Another 46 wanted Palestinians have been detained.Violence in the West Bank has surged in the past year, following the October 7 Hamas terror onslaught in southern Israel, in which some 1,200 people were massacred and 251 were taken hostage.Since that date, Israeli troops have arrested some 5,000 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 2,000 affiliated with Hamas.According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, more than 670 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops or terrorists carrying out attacks.During the same period, 29 people, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Dubai, Sept 5 (AFP) Sep 05, 2024-The oil-rich United Arab Emirates on Thursday announced the completion of the Arab world's first nuclear power plant, calling it a "significant step".Abu Dhabi's Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant will produce 40 terawatt-hours of electricity annually after its fourth and final reactor has entered commercial operation, the state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said in a statement. It will generate 25 percent of the electricity needs of the hot, desert Gulf state, where air-conditioning is ubiquitous -- nearly the equivalent of New Zealand's annual consumption, ENEC said. The station will power companies including the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world's biggest oil producers, Emirates Steel and Emirates Global Aluminium, ENEC said.Barakah, which means "blessing" in Arabic, started operations in 2020 when the first of its four reactors went into service.Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, has also said it plans to build nuclear reactors.Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hailed Barakah's completion as a "significant step on the journey towards net zero"."We will continue to prioritise energy security and sustainability for the benefit of our nation and our people today and tomorrow," he said in a post on social media platform X.According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the plant "will have to be disassembled at the end of its useful life, in around 60-80 years".The UAE, which is made up of seven emirates, including the capital Abu Dhabi and economic hub Dubai, is one of the largest oil producers in the OPEC cartel. The country was largely built on oil but is spending billions to develop enough renewable energy to cover half of its needs by 2050.Last year, it hosted the COP28 UN climate talks which resulted in an agreement to "transition away" from fossil fuels. The UAE lies across the Gulf from Iran which has a Russian-built nuclear power plant outside the coastal city of Bushehr, as well as a controversial uranium enrichment programme. The UAE has repeatedly said its nuclear ambitions are for "peaceful purposes" and ruled out developing any enrichment programme or nuclear reprocessing technologies. The country uses gas-powered stations for much of its electricity needs, but also has one of the world's biggest solar plants outside Abu Dhabi.

Europe's Vega rocket launches in French Guiana-by AFP Staff Writers.

Kourou (AFP) Sept 5, 2024-Europe's Vega rocket launched Wednesday from French Guiana, an AFP journalist said, carrying a satellite which will help combat natural disasters.Delayed by a day due to "electrical issues on the ground links", according to French firm Arianespace, the launch in Kourou finally took place at 10:50 pm (0150 GMT Thursday)."Successful lift-off for the last Vega mission from Europe's spaceport," the Guiana Space Centre wrote on social media platform X.The rocket is transporting the Sentinel-2C satellite, part of the European Union's Copernicus programme.Sentinel-2C will play a role in water quality monitoring and detecting methane emissions. The satellite will also support the management of natural disasters such as forest fires, earthquakes and floods. The mission will be the last for the Vega rocket, built by Italian aerospace company Avio and in service since 2012.It is due to be replaced by the more powerful Vega-C, which has been grounded since 2022 following an accident which caused the loss of two Airbus satellites.fro-roc/cco/rsc/tym

New French nuclear reactor enters automatic shutdown.

Paris, Sept 5 (AFP) Sep 05, 2024-France's newest nuclear reactor, plagued by massive delays and cost overruns, shut itself down automatically Wednesday just a day after starting up for the first time. The European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) in Flamanville, Normandy is going through a "long and complex startup process requiring many trials and tests, and that can induce shutdowns like this," a spokeswoman for state-owned energy giant EDF told AFP.The shutdown "proves the safety system is working well," she added, saying that staff were now "doing the necessary technical checks and analysis... then they will restart the reactor".EDF's latest reactor, supposed to be the model for a new generation of power plants pushed by President Emmanuel Macron for the coming decades, has been completed 12 years late at a cost of 13.2 billion euros ($14.6 billion) -- around four times the 3.3 billion initially budgeted.Reactors of the same design have previously been completed in China and Finland."On the Finnish EPR, there were several setbacks, especially with some hydraulic pumps that were faulty and had to be replaced," said Nicolas Goldberg, an energy expert at Colombus Consulting."This doesn't call the startup into question. We'll just have to be patient," he added.EDF had on Monday secured approval to begin the fission reaction from France's ASN nuclear safety authority, having loaded uranium fuel into the reactor in May and carried out a battery of tests. The Flamanville plant will gradually ramp up to 25 percent output before being connected to the grid "by the end of autumn", the power company says -- a further delay from its previous target of the end of summer. At full power it will be France's top-producing nuclear reactor at 1,600 megawatts, enough to supply around three million homes with electricity.

Japan to resume trial removal of Fukushima debris.

Tokyo, Sept 5 (AFP) Sep 05, 2024-The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant said Thursday it aims to carry out a trial removal of highly radioactive debris next week, after a previous attempt was suspended.Thirteen years after an earthquake and tsunami hit Fukushima-Daiichi in one of the world's worst nuclear accidents, around 880 tons of extremely hazardous material remain inside.Late last month, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) had to suspend a removal procedure after a technical problem involving the installation of the necessary equipment."It will take several days for us to prepare for a resumption... and we will be able to resume next week if all goes well as scheduled," a Tepco spokesman told reporters.Three of Fukushima-Daiichi's six reactors were operating when a tsunami hit on March 11, 2011, knocking down cooling systems and sending them into meltdown in what became the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. In three units of the Fukushima plant, fuel and other material melted and then solidified into highly radioactive "fuel debris".The new operation aims to remove a sample of the debris and study it in order to decide on the next steps.Tepco deployed two mini-drones and a "snake-shaped robot" inside in February, as part of the preparations for removal. The debris has radiation levels so high that Tepco had to develop specialised robots able to function inside.Last year, Tepco began releasing into the Pacific Ocean 540 Olympic swimming pools' worth of water used to cool the stricken reactors. But removing the debris has long been dubbed the most daunting challenge in the decades-long project to decommission the plant.

EDF, Westinghouse protest S.Korean rival's Czech nuclear deal.

Prague, Aug 27 (AFP) Aug 27, 2024-France's EDF and the US's Westinghouse have appealed the Czech Republic's decision to award a multi-billion-dollar nuclear tender to South Korea's KHNP, the Czech antitrust watchdog said Tuesday.Last month, the Czech authorities announced KHNP beat EDF to win a tender to build two nuclear units at the Dukovany power plant, after Westinghouse's bid was ruled out in January. The Czech competition office (UOHS) said it has received protests from the two unsuccessful bidders."UOHS has received an appeal against the sponsor's approach to the tender procedure for the construction of one or more new nuclear reactors, not only from the American company Westinghouse but also from the French group EDF", UOHS said in a statement. In a statement issued Monday, the American group confirmed the appeal and accused its Korean competitor of using its technology without authorisation."KHNP's APR1000 and APR1400 plant designs utilize Westinghouse-licensed Generation II System 80 technology," the statement read."KHNP neither owns the underlying technology nor has the right to sublicense it to a third party without Westinghouse consent," it added.EDF also confirmed it had filed an appeal, saying in a statement it sought "to ensure that the tender process adheres to the principles of fair trade and transparency, notably in a European context."According to Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the price offered by KHNP beat expectations, reaching around 200 billion Czech koruna ($8.65 billion) per unit if two units are built.Prague said it expected to sign a deal with the winner by March, with construction to begin in 2029, and the first new reactor launched in trial operation in 2036.str-bo/sw-mmp/gv

UN nuclear head at Russian plant warns over fighting.

Kurchatov, Russia, Aug 27 (AFP) Aug 27, 2024-UN nuclear watchdog head Rafael Grossi on Tuesday warned during a visit to Russia's Kursk nuclear plant that its proximity to ongoing fighting was "extremely serious" following Ukraine's unprecedented cross-border offensive.Grossi said his tour enabled him to "look at the most important parts" of the plant, which is less than 50 kilometres (30 miles) from fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces."A nuclear power plant of this type so close to a point of contact or military front is an extremely serious fact," Grossi said after visiting the plant."The fact we have military activity a few kilometres, a few miles away from here, make it an immediate point of attention," he added."At the end of the day, again, this may sound common sense and simple: Don't attack a nuclear power plant."He said he was in "close contact" with Russian authorities and would visit Kyiv next week to talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding it was "important to talk" and "keep dialogue".He added the Kursk power plant currently was "operating in a very close to normal conditions".The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly warned of the dangers of fighting around nuclear plants following Russia's full-scale military offensive into Ukraine in February 2022.In the first days of the conflict, Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine, and also briefly held the decommissioned Chernobyl plant in the north.Ukraine launched its surprise incursion into Kursk on August 6 and has said it is making advances, even as Russian forces move deeper into eastern Ukraine.Russian President Vladimir Putin last week accused Ukraine of trying to attack the Kursk nuclear power plant, with drone fragments found near its spent nuclear fuel storage facility."I was informed about the impact of drones, I was shown some of the remnants of those, signs of impact they had," Grossi said on Tuesday.- 'Like building across street' -Before his mission, Grossi had said he wanted to "independently assess what is happening" at the plant, "given the serious situation".The plant lies some 60 kilometres from the Russia-Ukraine border, next to the Seym river, and less than 50 kilometres away from Kursk city, the region's capital with a population of around 440,000.The plant has four reactor units -- in addition to two under construction -- though only two are operational. Two others have been shut down. All four reactors are the same type as Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear power plant, without a protecting dome around them."Equating Chernobyl with Kursk is an exaggeration. But this is the same type of reactor and there is no specific protection," Grossi said."This is unlike other reactors in the world, where you have the typical dome. This is completely different, this is like the building across the street -- with all this nuclear material."He also warned as the plant was operating "the temperature is much higher and if there was the case of an impact or something that could affect it there would be serious consequences".In 1986, a reactor at Chernobyl exploded during a botched safety test, resulting in the world's worst nuclear accident that sent clouds of radiation across much of Europe and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate.Tariq Rauf, a former IAEA official, said these types of reactors have since undergone "significant safety upgrades".Robert Kelley, a former IAEA director of inspections, said: "The possibility of a Chernobyl-type incident with the reactor blowing up and burning for days is zero."But he added that an errant bomb or large artillery strike on spent fuel storage ponds could damage the fuel and release radioactive gases and particles.- 'Maximum restraint' -Russia has repeatedly sounded the alarm over a possible hit since Ukrainian troops and tanks stormed into Kursk. The IAEA urged both Russia and Ukraine to exercise "maximum restraint" to "avoid a nuclear accident with the potential for serious radiological consequences".Zelensky has said Ukrainian forces have captured dozens of settlements and continue to make advances in Kursk. More than 130,000 people have been displaced so far.Kyiv has said the offensive aims to prevent cross-border strikes from Russia into its Sumy region and to force Russia to the negotiating table "on our own terms".

One Jewish State: Ambassador Friedman’s New Book Echoes Yiftah’s Proclamation to the Ammonite King—and Not By Accident.Rabbi Adam B. Winston, Esq.One Jewish State-September 5, 2024

The conflict over Jewish sovereignty in Judea and Samaria is far from new. This struggle echoes across millennia, with roots deeply embedded in ancient texts and traditions. One of the most profound moments in this historical debate can be found in the Book of Judges, where Yiftah (Jephthah), a leader of Israel, responds to the Ammonite king’s claim over the land east of the Jordan. Don Isaac Abarbanel, the great Jewish leader and statesman, identifies four key arguments in Yiftah’s message that remain relevant today, particularly in addressing Palestinian claims to Judea and Samaria. These arguments not only clarify the legitimacy of Jewish sovereignty but also highlight the historical, legal, and moral grounds for the Jewish people’s right to their ancestral homeland. In modern times, these same arguments resonate in the new work of Ambassador David Friedman, whose recent book, One Jewish State, embodies the strength and clarity of Yiftah’s platform. Friedman builds upon these age-old principles to advocate for a unified, sovereign Jewish state, a vision rooted in justice, history, and faith. The arguments laid out in his book echo Yiftah’s call for Jewish self-determination and challenge flawed counterclaims that undermine Jewish sovereignty. One Jewish State is out today! Don’t forget to pick up a copy. And let’s start a discussion about a real alternative to the Two State Delusion. https://t.co/TezdZZWIvr— David M Friedman (@DavidM_Friedman) September 3, 2024-Argument 1: The Land Was Not Taken from Amon but from the Amorites-Yiftah’s first point to the Ammonite king is crucial: Israel did not take the land from the Ammonites; it took it from the Amorites, who themselves had taken it from the Moabites. In other words, Amon’s claim to the land was not legitimate even at the time of Yiftah. The Ammonites had no valid historical right to the territory because they were not its original owners. This argument can be directly applied to modern debates over Judea and Samaria. The claim that these areas belong to a Palestinian state presupposes that there was, at some point, an Arab Palestinian state that held legitimate sovereignty over this land. However, such a state has never existed in history. The land was governed by the Ottoman Empire, then by the British Mandate, and then became disputed territory following Israel’s War of Independence in 1948. Just as Amon had no legitimate claim to the land taken from the Amorites, the Palestinian claim is similarly flawed, given the lack of any historically sovereign Palestinian state that governed the land. Friedman’s arguments in One Jewish State bolster this point, highlighting that the modern-day claimants to the land have no more right to it than the Ammonites did in Yiftah’s time.Argument 2: Israel Was Not the Aggressor in Its Exodus from Egypt-Yiftah’s second argument concerns Israel’s exodus from Egypt. The Torah tells us that Israel sent messengers to negotiate peaceful passage through the lands of Moab but was met with violence. Israel did not seek conflict; it sought peace and only fought in self-defense. Similarly, in the modern era, Israel’s actions in Judea and Samaria have consistently been defensive. In 1967, Israel did not initiate the Six-Day War that led to the capture of Judea and Samaria; it was responding to aggression from its neighbors who sought its destruction. This argument highlights a key principle: Israel is not the aggressor in its historical or contemporary conflicts over the land. In both ancient and modern contexts, Israel’s actions have been driven by the need to protect its people and secure its borders against hostile forces. Ambassador Friedman, in One Jewish State, reflects on this fundamental truth, arguing that Israel’s pursuit of sovereignty over all of its historic territories is a continuation of its legitimate defense against aggression, not an act of unwarranted conquest. The narrative that paints Israel as an aggressor in Judea and Samaria is a distortion of historical facts, ignoring the repeated instances in which Israel has sought peaceful resolutions and been met with violence.Argument 3: The Land Is Divinely Granted to Israel-The third argument presented by Yiftah is the most profound, and most essential: the land of Israel, on both sides of the Jordan, was not taken by Israel but was granted by HaShem, who removed it from the dominion of Israel’s enemies. This is not merely a historical claim but a theological assertion that the Jewish people’s connection to the land is one of a divine grant. The Torah explicitly describes the allocation of this land to Israel as a fulfillment of a divine promise made to the forefathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In the modern context, this argument remains central to Jewish identity and claims to Judea and Samaria. For thousands of years, Jews have maintained a continuous presence in these territories, driven by the knowledge that this land is their God-given heritage. Friedman’s book reiterates this divine right, drawing upon the same scriptural and theological sources that have sustained Jewish claims for millennia. Just as Yiftah invoked divine providence against the claims of the Ammonites, so too does Friedman in his work assert that modern Israel stands on the foundation of a divinely sanctioned bond to its ancestral land.Argument 4: The Test of Time: Why Act Now After Hundreds of Years? Yiftah’s final argument to the Ammonite king is perhaps the most practical: hundreds of years had passed since Israel had taken the land, so why had Amon not attempted to reclaim it until now? This point is a challenge to the sudden resurgence of a claim that had lain dormant for centuries. It highlights the weakness of a claim based on delayed grievances or opportunistic timing. This argument is similarly relevant to Palestinian claims to Judea and Samaria. Before the 20th century, there was little to no advocacy for a separate Arab Palestinian state. The territories known as Judea and Samaria were not recognized as belonging to a distinct Palestinian people but were part of broader regional and tribal affiliations, and always referred to in tandem with the Jewish People. The emergence of Palestinian claims aligns more with geopolitical changes and conflicts than with any continuous or historical assertion of statehood or sovereignty. Like Amon’s sudden assertion, the modern Palestinian claim seems driven more by political opportunism than by any rooted historical right. Ambassador Friedman, in One Jewish State, underscores this argument, pointing out that the suddenness of these claims lacks credibility and historic continuity.Applying Yiftah’s Lessons Today-The arguments Yiftah presented to the Ammonite king are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. They demonstrate that Jewish sovereignty is built on firm historical, legal, and theological foundations. Just as Yiftah dismantled the flawed claims of Amon, these principles help to clarify and strengthen the modern Jewish claim to Judea and Samaria, while dismantling the complex of false Palestinian allegations. They show that Israel has not been an aggressor but has acted in self-defense; that Jewish claims to the land are divinely sanctioned; and that competing claims, like those of the Ammonites and Palestinians, lack historical validity.Ambassador David Friedman’s One Jewish State embodies this same strength and clarity. His arguments echo Yiftah’s timeless appeal for Jewish self-determination and sovereignty over its historic homeland. Today, as in the time of Yiftah, these truths must be asserted with clarity, confidence, and conviction, ensuring that the Jewish people’s rightful claim to their land is never forgotten or compromised.

A Christian Solution for Peace in Gaza-Marziyeh Amirizadeh-Opinion-September 5, 2024

As an Iranian American, having lived most of my life under the misogynist evil extremism of the Islamic regime, there are many things that bring me back to the traumas in the land of my birth. Waking up to the news this week of six Israeli hostages being executed by Hamas in cold blood reminds me of the period I served a death sentence in Evin prison when Islamic regime agents massacred thousands. The solution for peace in Gaza is not negotiating with the terrorists, but to cut off the head of the octopus in Iran, and to eliminate its terrorist tentacles in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and around the world. In Gaza, the idea of a two-state solution is suicidal. It has failed many times. As many times as Israel has accepted this idea, Hamas and other Islamic terrorists have rejected it. After the savage Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, Israel cannot be fooled to believe what the terrorists have promised all along: that their goal is to annihilate Israel, not live peacefully with Israel. In Middle Eastern culture, negotiating with terrorists shows weakness and emboldens them. This is the case with the Islamic Republic regime, the biggest supporter global terror.  Enabling the terrorists from Tehran to Gaza will only lead to more loss of lives of innocent Israelis. In the Oslo Accord of the 1990s Israel agreed to work toward the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. As intoxicated as people were about the hope for peace, Oslo simply gave the Palestinian Authority and Hamas land on which to base themselves, and bring their attacks on Israel closer and more deadly through decades of terror. The Islamic Republic regime was quick to invest in radicalizing the terrorists, and arming them as well as possible. Thousands of Israelis lost their lives as sacrificial lambs on a fake altar of peace. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results, Israel would be insane to allow a separate Palestinian terrorist state on its borders. For decades and multiple times, Israel was willing to accept the idea of establishing Palestinian state. When offered nearly everything in the 2000 Camp David Summit, rather than creating a state for his people, Yasser Arafat unleashed years of terror and bloodshed. Arafat’s words backed up his actions, “Peace for us means the destruction of Israel. We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations.” It comes from the Koran itself, “Kill them whenever you confront them, and drive them out from there they drove you out.” (Surah 2:191)Simply, Islamic terrorists do not seek peace but only hate and destruction of State of Israel. These teachings and brainwashing against Israel are as common as baseball and apple pie are in America. During his speech in Congress in July, Prime Minister Netanyahu shared his vision for Gaza that is demilitarized and deradicalized. Demilitarization of Gaza could be much easier if Israel focuses on the head of the octopus, the Islamic Republic regime, and not just the regime’s tentacles and terrorist proxies. 80 million Iranians are desperately waiting for any chance to overthrow the regime. The fact is that even if Israel physically eliminates all terrorists in Gaza, still peace with Palestinians will fail since they have been brainwashed with genocidal radical Islamic ideology against Israelis and Jews. Without deradicalization, new leaders will emerge and continue to radicalize more Gazans. That’s why actual peace with Palestinians is only possible when the Islamic Republic regime is defeated (demilitarization), and the hearts and minds of Palestinians against Israelis are changed through deradicalization. Deradicalization will happen only through a message of love and salvation that challenges their ideology of hate and destruction. Palestinians need to experience the love of Christians who genuinely and unconditionally wish for their well-being and prosperity. Deradicalization, changing the hearts and minds of Palestinians, will take a generation. It means uprooting the Islamic ideology and its lies that they have been brainwashed with from birth, and which has failed them for decades. In order to change their hearts, in order for a true Solution for Peace in Gaza, an investment of love needs to be made to counteract their hate. Palestinians need to understand their true enemy is not Israel but Hamas, the Islamic Republic regime, and the extremist ideologies they represent. They need to understand that these are the root of their problems and suffering. They can only do this when they see the opposite, a truth rooted in love. Through exposure to Christians who embrace love, freedom, and forgiveness, Palestinians need to understand that the Islam that hijacked their lives is all about submission, brute force, and punishment.  Radical Islam creates a culture of fear, not to disobey Islamic rules. Conversely in Christianity you follow Jesus with your own will. Islam is about unrestrained hate, but Christianity is about unconditional love. The Solution for Peace in Gaza calls for hundreds of thousands of Christians to make a personal investment to rebuild and rehabilitate Gaza entirely. By showing the love of Jesus we can combat a dangerous and self-destructive ideology they have embraced, and truly achieve peace. Rather than forcing Israel into a situation of creating another terrorist state on its narrow borders, for actual peace and long-term prosperity, of Palestinian Arabs in Gaza and Israelis alike, the Solution for Peace in Gaza is the only answer. Christians’ who revere the God of Israel, must commit to get involved in the future of rebuilding Gaza alongside Israel. World leaders who say they want Palestinians in Gaza to live in peace must adopt this Solution for Peace in Gaza as the only one that can work.
