The Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday evening that two soldiers were killed and three were wounded in an attack by Palestinian terror operatives in Rafah during the morning hours. The military launched a wave of intense attacks on Hamas in response, with the violence leaving the fragile ceasefire teetering after less than a week.The slain soldiers were named as Maj. Yaniv Kula, 26, and Staff Sgt. Itay Yavetz, 21. Both served in the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion and were from the central city of Modiin. Kula was a company commander.Israel blamed Hamas for the attacks, saying it was “a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.” However, the terror group said the incident occurred in an area under Israeli control, where they claimed to have had no contact with their operatives for months.IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. DOHA, Qatar – Hamas intends to maintain security control in Gaza during an interim period, a senior Hamas official told Reuters, adding he could not commit to the terrorist group disarming — positions that reflect the difficulties facing US plans to secure an end to the war.Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal also said the terror organization was ready for a ceasefire of up to five years to rebuild devastated Gaza, with guarantees for what happens afterwards depending on Palestinians being given “horizons and hope” for statehood.Speaking to Reuters in an interview from Doha, where Hamas leaders have long resided, Nazzal defended the terror group’s crackdown in Gaza, where it carried out summary public executions on Monday. There were always “exceptional measures” during war and those executed were criminals guilty of killing, he claimed.While Hamas has broadly expressed these views before, the timing of Nazzal’s comments demonstrates the major obstacles obstructing efforts to cement a full end to the war started by the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, terror onslaught against Israel, days after the first phase of the ceasefire was agreed.They point to big gaps between Hamas’s positions and US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, ahead of negotiations expected to address Hamas’ weapons and how the enclave is governed.Asked for comment on Nazzal’s remarks, the Prime Minister’s Office said Israel was committed to the ceasefire agreement and continued to uphold and fulfill its side of the plan.“Hamas is supposed to release all hostages in stage 1. Standing in front of an adoring crowd at the Knesset last week, US President Trump told Israel’s leaders that “you’ve won” in Gaza.“What a victory it’s been,” he said in a speech that was maundering even for the famously loquacious president.Speaking before Trump — hours after the 20 remaining living hostages were released by Hamas — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was only slightly less triumphant, boasting that Trump’s plan “ends the war by achieving all our objectives.”“All of the prime minister’s objectives have now been achieved,” his spokeswoman had said three days earlier, as the ceasefire came into effect.There is one problem, however.No one seems to have informed Hamas that it has been defeated.Trump’s 20-point plan, if fully implemented, would indeed spell an unmitigated victory for Israel and likely a fatal blow to any Hamas plans to rule Gaza in the foreseeable future.But it is nowhere near being fully implemented. Only two of the 20 clauses have been fully carried out, both of them concessions by Israel. It released thousands of Palestinian prisoners and gave up any potential plan to push Gazans to emigrate.Hamas, on the other hand, seems determined to show that it controls events on the ground.It has slow-rolled the release of the 28 slain hostages. By Sunday, it had handed over only 12, six days after the end of the 72-hour window to give up all 28 bodies.Senior Israeli officials mince no words in their rejection of Hamas — and White House — excuses that the terror group is struggling to find or access the remaining bodies. “We know, as a matter of fact, they can easily bring back a significant number of dead hostages and give them back according to the agreement,” said Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Thursday. Defense Minister Israel Katz, a day earlier, instructed the IDF to prepare plans to return to war if Hamas continues to avoid fulfilling its obligations.Not about to step down-Hamas does not seem especially bothered by such threats, whether they come from Jerusalem or Washington.Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal told Reuters on Saturday that Hamas would not commit to disarming, a central component of Trump’s plan. This despite Trump’s threat that the terror group could be dealt with “violently” if it refuses to give up its weapons.Hamas is not trying to hide its weapons or its determination to violently eliminate any opposition in Gaza. It has carried out public executions, and its operatives have put uniforms back on, riding around Gaza in pickup trucks brandishing rifles.This is not the behavior of a whipped organization that is about to hand over power and give up violence.Sunday’s deadly attack on IDF troops in Rafah was the logical next step for Hamas. It had been testing how serious the Trump administration was about the terms of the ceasefire, and how determined he was to keep Israel from enforcing them by fire.Hearing the White House make excuses for it, and seeing the IDF watching from behind the new “yellow line” in Gaza, no one should be surprised that Hamas continued to test the boundaries of the ceasefire.Trump’s repeated declaration that “the war is over” has made that reality less likely to emerge. He has signaled to Hamas that the threat of a renewed IDF push into Gaza City is off the table, and that it has plenty of space to maneuver before it risks paying a significant price.Leaving a coherent Hamas organization inside of Gaza all but guarantees more conflict in the Strip, and keeps Trump’s vision of an age in which “peace and respect can flourish among the nations of the broader Middle East” a distant dream.Hamas has shown time and again that it can suffer immense damage and return stronger than it was before. It did so after Operation Cast Lead in 2008, Operation Protective Edge in 2014, and the repeated smaller operations in Gaza since the Israeli pullout in 2005.True, it has never taken anything like the punishment Israel inflicted since its October 7, 2023 invasion, but it remains armed, motivated, and the strongest force in Gaza besides the IDF.There is a pathway to defeating Hamas through the US-backed agreement, but it is a narrow one. It will only work if Hamas understands that it has no wiggle room, and that any violation will be met by military force.The White House is clearly determined to maintain the ceasefire, and has taken the position until now that keeping Israel from responding in force will make it more likely for Hamas to be disarmed and toppled by other means. But that fundamentally misreads what Hamas is and what it responds to.If there is not a vigorous Israeli response, and a clear message from Trump that the IDF is free to respond to further violations, Hamas will continue pushing the bounds of the deal until it falls apart.“Peace through strength,” Trump likes to say.There is no better time to prove that adage.

Israel resumes Gaza strikes, accusing Hamas of violating truce deal.
Jerusalem, Oct 19 (AFP) Oct 19, 2025-Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Sunday, after accusing the Palestinian militant group Hamas of breaking a ceasefire and hostage release deal brokered last week."In response to the blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement earlier today (Sunday), the IDF (Israeli army) has begun a series of strikes against Hamas terror targets in the southern Gaza Strip", the military said in a statement.Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas and its allies committed to releasing all remaining hostages they seized on October 7, 2023. Vienna, Oct 18 (AFP) Oct 18, 2025-Work has started to repair damaged power lines to Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant after a lengthy outage, following the establishment of local ceasefire zones, the UN's nuclear watchdog said Saturday.The site, occupied by Russian forces since March 2022, lost its connection to the grid on September 23 for the 10th time -- the longest outage of external power supply to the facility since Russia invaded Ukraine.Repairs to the off-site power lines began after the "establishment of local ceasefire zones to allow work to proceed", Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a post on X.The IAEA said that both sides had worked with the agency to allow the "complex repair plan" to proceed."Restoration of off-site power is crucial for nuclear safety and security," it said.The agency said later it expected the work to take about a week. It had previously said repairs were needed on both sides of the front line, several kilometres from the plant.Both Russia and Ukraine confirmed the repair works were ongoing.Since the outage, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been powered by backup diesel generators. Vienna (AFP) Oct 16, 2025-The EU's top court ruled Thursday that a lightning strike on an aircraft may qualify as an "extraordinary circumstance" that may exempt airlines from compensation for long delays or cancellations.An Austrian court referred the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union, in which a passenger sought to claim compensation from Austrian Airlines.The passenger arrived with a delay of more than seven hours from Romania to Austria after the aircraft the traveller was supposed to take was hit by lightning and had to be replaced.Lightning "constitutes an extraordinary circumstance which may relieve the airline of the obligation to pay compensation... where it leads to mandatory safety inspections," the court said in a statement on the ruling.It said it was up to the Austrian court to assess if the airline took "all reasonable measures" to avoid the extraordinary circumstances.In 2017, the court classified a collision with a bird as "extraordinary circumstance".
