Activists: Israeli strike kills 42 Syrian soldiers

BEIRUT (AP) — Israel's weekend airstrike on a military complex near the Syrian capital of Damascus killed at least 42 Syrian soldiers, a group of anti-regime activists said Monday, citing information from military hospitals. The Syrian government has not released a death toll, but Syrian state media have reported casualties in Sunday's pre-dawn airstrike, Israel's third into Syria so far this year. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said about 150 soldiers are normally stationed in the area that was targeted, but that it was not clear how many were there at the time of the strike.Rami Abdel-Rahman, the head of the group, said his sources at Syrian military hospitals gave him information on 42 Syrian soldiers killed in the Israeli attack.Israel's government has not formally confirmed involvement in strikes on Syria. However, Israeli officials said the attacks were meant to prevent advanced Iranian weapons from reaching Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, an ally of Syria and foe of Israel. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss covert military operations.Israel on Monday signaled a return to "business as usual," with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arriving in China for a scheduled visit.
Syria and its patron Iran have hinted at possible retribution for the strikes, though the rhetoric in official statements has been relatively mild.Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi warned Monday that Israel was "playing with fire," but gave no other suggestions of possible consequences, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.Syria's government called the attacks a "flagrant violation of international law" that has made the Middle East "more dangerous."Israeli officials have indicated they will keep trying to block what they see as an effort by Iran to send sophisticated weapons to Lebanon's Hezbollah militia ahead of a possible collapse of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.Israel has repeatedly threatened to intervene in the Syrian civil war to stop the transfer of what it calls "game-changing" weapons to Hezbollah, a Syrian-backed group that battled Israel to a stalemate during a month-long war in 2006.Since carrying out a lone airstrike in January that reportedly destroyed a shipment of anti-aircraft missiles headed to Hezbollah, Israel had largely stayed on the sidelines. That changed this weekend with the pair of airstrikes, including an attack near a military complex close to Damascus early Sunday that set off powerful explosions.A senior Israeli official said both airstrikes targeted shipments of Fateh-110 missiles bound for Hezbollah. The Iranian-made guided missiles can fly deep into Israel and deliver powerful half-ton bombs with pinpoint accuracy. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a covert military operation.Israeli defense officials have identified several strategic weapons that they say cannot be allowed to reach Hezbollah. They include Syrian chemical weapons, the Iranian Fateh-110s, long-range Scud missiles, Yakhont missiles capable of attacking naval ships from the coast and Russian SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. Israel's airstrike in January destroyed a shipment of SA-17s meant for Hezbollah, according to U.S. officials.Israeli officials said the Fateh-110s reached Syria last week. Friday's airstrike struck a Damascus airport where the missiles were being stored, while the second series of airstrikes early Sunday targeted the remnants of the shipment, which had been moved to three nearby locations, the officials said.None of the Iranian missiles are believed to have reached Lebanon, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence assessment. In launching the strikes, Israel took a gamble that Assad has little desire to open a new front with Israel when he is preoccupied with the survival of his regime.Still, Israel was taking precautions. Israel's military deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket defense system to the north of the country Sunday."Alongside readiness and alertness, it's always good to prepare and train — but there are no winds of war," the head of Israel's northern command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan, told Israeli media.Tzahi Hanegbi, an Israeli lawmaker who is close to Netanyahu, said Monday that Israel's aim is to "keep advanced weapons from Hezbollah as soon as intentions are exposed and refrain from tension with Syria.""So if there is activity, then it is only against Hezbollah and not against the Syrian regime," Hanegbi told Israel Radio. "In that context you must see the fact that Israel doesn't officially admit to its operations, and that the prime minister left yesterday for China and (there is) the feeling of business as usual."Hezbollah fired some 4,000 rockets into Israel during the 2006 war, and Israel believes the group now has tens of thousands of rockets and missiles. The attacks pose a dilemma for the embattled Assad regime. If it fails to respond, it looks weak and opens the door to more airstrikes. But any military retaliation against Israel would risk dragging the Jewish state and its powerful army into a broader conflict. With few exceptions, Israel and Syria have not engaged in direct fighting in roughly 40 years. The airstrikes come as Washington considers how to respond to indications the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in its civil war. President Barack Obama has described the use of such weapons as a "red line," and the administration is weighing its options.
The White House declined for a second day to comment directly on Israel's air strikes in Syria, but said Obama believes Israel, as a sovereign nation, has the right to defend itself. The uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011, quickly turning into an armed insurgency and then a civil war. More than 70,000 people have been killed and millions displaced, while Assad and those trying to topple him remain deadlocked on the battlefield.___Federman reported from Jerusalem. The Israeli military said Monday it is poised to lift a closure on its northern airspace imposed a day earlier as part of an alert that followed air strikes on Syria."Civilian aviation in northern Israel will resume regular operation following security assessments," it said in a statement. An army spokeswoman told the AFP news agency that the closure, originally scheduled to last until May 9, was expected to end later on Monday.
A senior Israeli source confirmed to AFP that the Jewish state had carried out a pre-dawn attack on a site outside Damascus on Sunday, in the second such attack in 48 hours, both of which had targeted weapons destined for Lebanon's Hizbullah.Syrian officials warned in response that "missiles are ready" to retaliate.
Following Sunday's strike, the Israeli air force went on high alert, although the Jewish state appeared not to be anticipating a significant response from Damascus. Two batteries of the Iron Dome missile defense system were moved to the north of the country and Israeli media reported security in embassies around the world had been heightened due to the tensions.

Iran calls for stand against Israel after Syria attack

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran called on the region to unite against Israel after a reported attack on Syria and said it was ready to train the Damascus government's army.Israel carried out its second air strike in days on Syria early on Sunday, targeting Iranian-supplied missiles headed for Lebanon's Hezbollah, a Western intelligence source said.Tehran on Sunday denied the attack was aimed at "its missiles destined for Hezbollah resistance fighters in Lebanon," according to the Islamic state's English-language Press TV.Iran has supported its ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his efforts to suppress a rebellion that has raged for more than two years and which Tehran and Damascus say is being waged by Western-backed "terrorists".Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast urged countries in the region to stand against the "assault", the Fars news agency reported on Sunday.Iranian army ground forces commander Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said on Sunday Iran was ready to support its ally."Syria has a powerful army and with the structure and experience it has against the Zionist regime (Israel) it can definitely defend itself and there is no need for intervention by other countries," Pourdastan said, according to Fars."But if they need training we can help them," he added.Iran has denied supporting Assad militarily, although Western diplomats have said Iranian weapons pour into Syria via Iraq, Turkey, and Lebanon.Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in January Tehran would consider an attack on Syria an attack on itself.

Jerusalem-Flash 90
Jerusalem is Israel's biggest city, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced Monday. In a slew of Jerusalem-related statistics, released in honor of Jerusalem Day, to be celebrated later this week, the CBS announced that at the end of 2011, there were 804,400 people living in the city, 499,400 (62%) of them Jewish. Of the rest, 281,000 (35%) were Muslim, 14,700 (2%) Christian, and 9,000 (1%) “other” or no declared religion. In addition, 200 Druze lived in the city. The city added a net of 16,300 residents during 2011. Joining 2,900 individuals who moved into the city from abroad that year were an additional 18,700 who were born to families already living in Jerusalem or Israelis who moved there. However, 7,300 people left the city as well. New Israeli residents of Jerusalem hail mostly from Beit Shemesh, Tel Aviv, and Beitar Ilit, the CBS said.
The average Jerusalem household has 3.9 residents, higher than the average 3.3 in the rest of the country. Other large cities had significantly smaller families; in Haifa, the average household size is 2.5, while in Tel Aviv it is 2.2. Jersualemites also produced more children; women in the city had an average of 3.9 children, compared to 3.0 in the rest of the country.Significantly fewer Jerusalemites are in the workforce; just over half, 50.5%, are employed, compared to a national average of 63.6%. Unemployment in Jerusalem was 7.8% in 2012, compared to a national average of 6.9%. 84.4% of working Jerusalem residents are employed in the city, compared to 70.9% of Haifa residents, and 63.4% of Tel Aviv residents.Thirty one percent of residents are “very happy” to be living in Jerusalem. Among Jews alone, 41% said they were very happy to be residents, compared to only 13% of Arabs. Fifty seven percent said they were “happy” to be Jerusalem residents, while 12% said they were unhappy.Of the Jewish residents of the city, 32% consider themselves hareidi, 21% religious Zionist, 10% traditional-religious, 16% traditional, and 19% said they were secular. Two percent did not place themselves in any of these categories.During the past educational semester, there were 37,700 students in institutions of higher education in Jerusalem. Among Israel's six largest cities, Jerusalemites had the lowest per capita spending rate – NIS 3,326. And, the CBS said, city residents owned fewer communication and entertainment devices than residents of other large cities.

A look at the Fateh-110 missile

Israel has carried out airstrikes against Syria twice in the past three days, targeting what officials say are shipments of highly accurate, Iranian-made guided missiles known as Fateh-110s believed to be on their way to Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group. Here are some details about the missile:
—WHAT IS THE FATEH-110?
The Fateh-110, or "Conqueror" in Farsi, is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Iran and first put into service in 2002. The Islamic Republic unveiled an upgraded version last year that improved the weapon's accuracy and increased its range to 300 kilometers (185 miles). Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said at the time that the solid-fueled missile could strike with precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.
—WHY ARE THE MISSILES IMPORTANT?
Israel worries the missiles could be transferred to Lebanon's Hezbollah, providing a major boost to the Shiite militant group's arsenal. The Fateh-110 is more accurate than anything Hezbollah is currently known to possess. Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in mid-2006 that ended in a stalemate. The missile would put almost all of Israel in range, and its precision guidance system poses a threat to Israeli infrastructure and military installations.

Israeli warplanes strike Syria in escalation

BEIRUT (AP) — Israeli warplanes struck areas in and around the Syrian capital Sunday, setting off a series of explosions as they targeted a shipment of highly accurate, Iranian-made guided missiles believed to be bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, officials and activists said. The attack, the second in three days and the third this year, signaled a sharp escalation of Israel's involvement in Syria's bloody civil war. Syrian state media reported that Israeli missiles struck a military and scientific research center near Damascus and caused casualties.Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks, saying the "flagrant Israeli aggression aims to give direct military support to terrorist groups" fighting the government. Syria refers to rebels trying to topple President Bashar Assad's regime as "terrorists."The ministry, in letters sent to the United Nations and the U.N. Security Council, also said the Israeli strikes killed and wounded several people and "caused widespread destruction."The Syrian government was holding an emergency Cabinet meeting Sunday afternoon to discuss the attacks, according to state TV.While the government tried to use the airstrikes to taint the rebels by linking them to Israel, Syria's arch rival, the attacks still pose a dilemma for an Assad regime already battling a relentless rebellion at home. If it fails to respond, it looks weak and opens the door to such airstrikes becoming a common occurrence. But any military retaliation against Israel would risk dragging the Jewish state and its powerful army into a broader conflict. The tempo of the new strikes added a dangerous dynamic to the conflict, fueling concerns that events could spin out of control and spark a regional crisis.Israel's military on Sunday deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket defense system to the north of the country. It described the move as part of "ongoing situational assessments."A senior Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to disclose information about a secret military operation to the media, confirmed that Israel launched an airstrike in the Syrian capital early Sunday but did not give more precise details about the location. The target was Fateh-110 missiles, which have precision guidance systems with better aim than anything Hezbollah is known to have in its arsenal, the official told The Associated Press.
The airstrikes come as Washington considers how to respond to indications that the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in its civil war. President Barack Obama has described the use of such weapons as a "red line," and the administration is weighing its options - including possible military action.Iran, a close ally of the Assad regime, condemned the airstrikes, and a senior official hinted at a possible response not from Terhan, but rather Hezbollah.Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, assistant to the Iranian chief-of-staff, told Iran's state-run Arabic-language Al-Alam TV that Tehran "will not allow the enemy (Israel) to harm the security of the region." He added that "the resistance will retaliate to the Israeli aggression against Syria."Israel has said it wants to stay out of the Syrian war, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stated the Jewish state would be prepared to take military action to prevent sophisticated weapons from flowing from Syria to Hezbollah or other extremist groups.Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in mid-2006. The militant group fired thousands of rockets at Israel, while Israeli warplanes destroyed large areas of southern and eastern Lebanon during a conflict that ended in stalemate.Earlier this year, the Iron Dome system was credited with shooting down hundreds of rockets during a round of fighting against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.Israel is especially concerned that Hezbollah will take advantage of the chaos in neighboring Syria and try to smuggle advanced weapons into Lebanon. These include anti-aircraft missiles, which could hamper Israel's ability to operate in Lebanese skies, and advanced Yakhont missiles that are used to attack naval ships from the coast.Syria's state news agency reported explosions at the Jamraya military and scientific research center near Damascus and said initial reports indicate they were the "result of Israeli missiles." It said there were casualties but did not give a number.Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said the strikes occurred around 3 a.m. "Damascus shook. The explosion was very, very strong," said al-Shami adding that one of the attacks occurred near the capital's Qasioun mountain that overlooks Damascus. He said the raid targeted a military position for the elite Republican Guards that is in charge of protecting Damascus, Assad's seat of power.Mohammed Saeed, another activist who lives in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said "the explosions were so strong that earth shook under us." He said the smell of the fire caused by the air raid near Qasioun was noticeable miles away.Israeli media reported that Netanyahu also was holding an emergency meeting of his inner Security Cabinet. The prime minister's office declined comment.Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israel's military intelligence, said the strikes on Syria are a signal to Damascus' ally, Tehran, that Israel is serious about the red lines it has set."Syria is a very important part in the front that Iran has built. Iran is testing Israel and the U.S. determination in the facing of red lines and what it sees is in clarifies to it that at least some of the players, when they define red lines and they are crossed, take it seriously," he told Army Radio.Like the Syrian regime, Iran also portrayed the strike as evidence of collusion between Israel and Syria's rebels.Iranian defense minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying the attacks show a growing alliance of convenience between the Syrian opposition and Israel."These vain moves are not a sign of Israel's power," he said. "It rather shows the (Israeli) regime's despair in the face of regional developments."Iran has provided both financial and military support to Hezbollah for decades, and has used Syria as a conduit for both. If Assad were to fall, that pipeline could be cut, dealing a serious blow to Hezbollah's ability to confront Israel. The Fateh-110, or "Conqueror" in Farsi, is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Iran and first put into service in 2002. The Islamic Republic unveiled an upgraded version in 2012 that improved the weapon's accuracy and increased its range to 300 kilometers (185 miles).Vahidi said at the time that the solid-fueled missile could strike with pinpoint precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal. An Israeli airstrike in January also targeted weapons apparently bound for Hezbollah, Israeli and U.S. officials have said. The White House had no immediate comment on Sunday's reported missile strikes. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, also reported large explosions in the area of Jamraya, a military and scientific research facility northwest of Damascus, about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the Lebanese border.Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said the research center in Jamraya was not hit, but instead an army supply facility that produced food products for the military. It quoted unnamed Syrian security officials as saying that three sites including military barracks, arms depots and air defense center were targeted by the strike. The station aired footage of what it said was the Jamraya facility hit in the strike. It showed a heavily damaged building as well as what appeared to be a chicken farm with some chickens pecking around in debris scattered with dead birds. The raid appeared to have taken place next to a major road that was filled with debris, and shell casings were strewn on the ground. A blue street sign on the side of the road referred to the direction of the Lebanon border and the Syrian town of Zabadani near the frontier.
Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen TV, which has several reporters around Syria, said one of the strikes targeted a military position in the village of Saboura, west of Damascus and about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the Lebanon border. An amateur video said to be shot early Sunday in the Damascus area showed fire lighting up the night sky. The video appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting.Uzi Rubin, a missile expert and former Defense Ministry official, told the AP that if the target were Fateh-110 missiles as reported then it is a game changer as they put almost all Israel in range and can accurately hit targets.
Rubin emphasized that he was speaking as a rocket expert and had no details on reported strikes.
"If fired from southern Lebanon they can reach Tel Aviv and even (the southern city of) Beersheba." He said the rockets are much five times more accurate than the scud missiles that Hezbollah has fired in the past. "It is a game changer because they are a threat to Israel's infrastructure and military installations," he said.
Israel's first airstrike in Syria, in January, also struck Jamraya. U.S. officials said it targeted trucks next to the research center that carried SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles.___Deitch reported from Jerusalem. Taking sides in Syria is hard choice for Israel

By Dan Williams
LOD, Israel (Reuters) - The dilemma Israel faces in trying to formulate a strategy on Syria two years into its civil war is symbolized by a case being heard in a small courtroom near Tel Aviv. The state is prosecuting an Arab Israeli who briefly joined the rebel forces fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.Arrested after his return to Israel, Hikmat Massarwa, a 29-year-old baker, is accused of unlawful military training, having contacts with foreign agents and traveling to a hostile state. The trial hinges on the unanswered question of who, if anyone, Israel favors in the war and if the rebels will turn out to be friends or enemies. The prosecutor in Lod is trying to depict Massarwa as having aligned himself with foes of Israel, but Judge Avraham Yaakov is struggling for clarity. "There's no legal guidance regarding the rebel groups fighting in Syria," he told a recent hearing.Matters were simpler during the decades of unchallenged Assad family rule.Technically Israeli is at war with its northern neighbor. It captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Middle East War, built settlements and annexed the land. But belligerence was rare and the borderland has remained largely quiet for decades.Assad's Syria is part of the so-called Axis of Resistance along with Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah, both arch enemies of the Jewish state. But Syria itself avoided open conflict.Israel was slow to welcome the uprising against Assad when it broke out in March 2011. Though some leaders now call for his overthrow, planners fret about what might follow."The question for us is no longer whether it is good or not if Assad stays in power, but how do we control our interests in this divided, murky situation which could last for decades," said Ofer Shelah of the Yesh Atid party, which is part of the government coalition. The dilemma has grown more acute since Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaeda assumed a prominent role in the rebels' battle plans.Israelis believe one in 10 of the rebels is a jihadi who might turn his gun on them once Assad is gone. They also worry that Hezbollah guerrillas allied to Assad could get hold of his chemical arsenal and other advanced weaponry. So Israel has acted with restraint on Syria - shooting at its troops across the occupied Golan Heights only when hit by stray fire and playing down an Israeli airstrike on a suspected Hezbollah-bound convoy in January.Officials say Israel has also been cool to Western proposals to increase aid to the Syrian rebels to help them match Assad's superior armed forces. One Israeli official told Reuters that he responds to any suggestions of a foreign military role with the question: "Do you really know on whose behalf you'll be intervening?"
MIXED MESSAGES
But with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presiding over a new, right-leaning coalition and the Israeli military stretched by keeping vigil over several fronts - including Islamist-ruled Egypt - the message has been far from uniform.Netanyahu may have contributed to this by framing Iran and its nuclear program as Israel's overriding regional concern, bolstering the case for removing Tehran's ally Assad. When an Israeli intelligence analyst said last week that Assad's forces had used chemical weapons, both the Netanyahu government and its foreign allies were blindsided, according to officials.Washington confirmed the Israeli assessment, thus posing a problem for U.S. President Barack Obama, who had said use of chemical arms would be a "red line".Israel's deputy foreign minister urged U.S. action in Syria - a call slapped down by more senior figures.
Israel's ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, said it was not making any policy recommendations to Obama on Syria."We think this issue is very complex," he told Reuters.Several officials said Israel would be unlikely to attack Syria unilaterally unless it had evidence that chemical weapons had been handed over to Hezbollah.Lacking enough of the specialized ground troops that would be needed for a search-and-destroy sweep of chemical weapons, Israel would probably have to rely on aerial bombing. The Netanyhau government might even acquiesce if the rebels acquire the chemical weapons, on the assumption that the insurgents were mainstream Syrians keen to rebuild their country and loath to invite catastrophic war with Israel."If the jihadis get the chemical weapons, that's very bad, but there's still the hope that these people lack the hard-core military wherewithal, and required technical support in Syria, that would be required to use them," one Israeli official said.Indeed, Israeli planners are debating to what extent the radical Sunni Islamists fighting Assad could eventually constitute a direct threat to Israel. The chief military spokesman, Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai, sounded the alarm last month by saying the "Global Jihad" - meaning al Qaeda and its affiliates - wielded the most clout on the Syrian-held side of the Golan Heights.Other Israeli authorities are more optimistic. The Mossad intelligence agency estimates that Syria's entrenched secularism will dilute enmity to Israel, according to one official."The Islamists there aren't all Salafists, and the Salafists aren't all al Qaeda, by any means," the official said."We may not make peace, but I think we might find some kind of dialogue, if only for the sake of mutual deterrence."Israel has given no indication that it already has contacts with Syria's opposition. But it has coordinated closely on security with Jordan, a supporter of some rebel factions.Back in Judge Yaakov's courtroom, the fate of Massarwa, who faces a maximum of 15 years in jail if convicted, rests on whether the state can prove there is danger to Israel from the Free Syrian Army unit he stayed with for a week in March.Massarwa's lawyer, Helal Jaber, hopes the logic of "my enemy's enemy is my friend" will win clemency for his client, who went to Syria via Turkey in search of a missing brother who had separately joined the rebels."The greatest democracies in the world, including the United States, are supporting the opposition to Assad," Jaber said. "So how can Israel fault someone for doing the same?"

Deputy Transportation Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) said on Thursday night that the attempted terror attack near Mitzpeh Yericho is proof that the Palestinian Authority is not interested in reaching a peace agreement with Israel."The terrorist attack is another expression of the fact that the Palestinians do not want peace,” Hotovely said, adding, “The Arab League’s peace plan will not yield any results, just as similar initiatives have not achieved anything. The Palestinians and their leaders do not want peace, do not recognize the Jewish people's right to live here and the escalation proves it. Thank G-d this time it ended without casualties.”Thursday’s attack occurred when a terrorist opened fire at two people in Wadi Kelt, near Mitzpeh Yericho. The two were attacked as they sat in a car.The two people targeted, an Israeli woman from Mevaseret Tzion and a European tourist, were not hurt. The two told police that they had been touring the area when they noticed an Arab man nearby acting suspiciously. When they returned to their car, he attempted to shoot them. The IDF is investigating the incident.Earlier this week, Evyatar Borovsky of Yitzhar was killed in a stabbing attack at the Tapuach Junction. The relatives of Salam al-Zaghal, the terrorist who murdered Borovosky, have said they are proud of him and that he “did his duty toward the Palestinians who live under the aggression of the army and settlers.”On Tuesday, just hours after the killing, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party published a statement terming Al-Zaghal a “hero.”

The Christian situation and the Syrian conflict were the focus of the Pope’s audience with Lebanese president Michel Sleiman

Alessandro Speciale VATICAN CITY He met Benedict XVI a few months ago to thank him for his trip to Lebanon in September 2012. But the Christian Lebanese president, Michel Sleiman, decided to return to Rome to meet Francis in the Vatican this morning, in the same week as Israeli president Shimon Peres is due to pay the Pope a visit. The meeting between the Argentinean pope and Sleiman – who was not able to attend the mass which celebrated the start of Francis’ Petrine ministry last 19 March, because he was not in the country – lasted 25 minutes and the two were assisted by an interpreter. The Prefect of the Papal Household, Mgr. Georg Gänswein, who returned to the Vatican with Benedict XVI yesterday, was also present. The Lebanese president gave Francis a 20th century icon of the Virgin Mary; in exchange, the new Pope gave him a silver and mother of pearl medallion. Sleiman was accompanied by an entourage of 11 people, including his wife, Wafaa.According to a Vatican Press Office statement, during the audience the two leaders said they hoped for the success of negotiations for the formation of a new government in Beirut. The new government “will face significant challenges on a national and international level.” Lebanon has been without a government since the end of March, after Prime Minister Najij Miqati handed in his resignation. This is second resignation handed in, in the past few months. The former prime minister’s coalition government split over differences in opinion regarding the organisation of the upcoming legislative elections.Sleiman and Francis also highlighted the importance of dialogue and collaboration between members of the various ethnic and religious communities that make society so rich and varied, in favour of the common good and the development and stability of the nation.”But the main focus of the audience was, naturally, the Syrian conflict and the tragic situation faced by thousands of refugees who have fled to Lebanon and neighbouring countries. Francis and Sleiman “called for further humanitarian aid with the support of the international community to help the suffering population.”

But in the Vatican there is fear of the repercussions the Syrian crisis could have on Lebanon’s domestic situation, especially on Christians. Last October, just one month after Benedict XVI’s visit to Lebanon, there was a serious bombing in Beirut’s Christian neighbourhood, leading to the death of the head of Lebanon’s secret services, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (FSI), Wissam al Hassan. The Vatican statement said there was mention of “the delicate situation faced by Christians in the entire Middle East and the significant contribution they can make.” This was in light of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation “Ecclesia in the Middle East”, which Ratzinger delivered on his visit to Lebanon. The Apostolic Exhortation “is an important reference point for Catholic communities and societies in the Region.” Finally, the two leaders wished for “a quick and fruitful resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. This is becoming increasingly necessary for peace and stability in the Region.”

Vatican-Israel Bi-Lateral Commission honors John XXIII in Jerusalem while Israel’s President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres has audience with Pope Francis and is granted honorary citizenship in Assisi

Lisa Palmieri-Billig Rome Judging from events that took place this week in Italy and in Israel, relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish People seem to promise an all time high. While Israel’s President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres met with Pope Francis in Rome, the 12th meeting of the Bi-Lateral Commission of the Holy See and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel was held in Jerusalem, dedicated to honoring and celebrating the memory of Pope John XXIII 50 years after his death. The international  conference discussed “his historic role in transforming the attitude and teaching of the Catholic Church towards the Jewish people, based on mutual respect and affirmation of the eternal Covenant between God and Israel in keeping with the declaration Nostra Aetate of the Second Vatican Council.”The conference was sponsored by the American Jewish Committee,  Tel Aviv University’s  Kantor Center for the study of Contemporary European Jewry and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Speakers from the Vatican and the Catholic Church included among others, Cardinal Kurt Koch, Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem H.B. Fouad Twal, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa -  Custos of the Holy Land, and Prof. Alberto Melloni.  Jewish speakers included scholars from Israeli and European Universities, Yad Vashem, Chief Rabbi of Haifa Emeritus - She’ar Yashub Cohen, Dr.Amos Luzzatto - the former President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, and Rabbi David Rosen - AJC’s International Director of Interreligious Affairs.Different sessions were dedicated to Roncalli  and the Shoah;  the Establishment of the state of Israel;  Vatican II and Nostra Aetate;  the Legacy of John XXIII for Christian- Jewish Relations in Europe and the World.Commenting on the Conference, Rabbi Rosen said, “It exceeded all expectations and created tremendous excitement. A throng of people gathered outside the packed room, many sitting on the stairs.  They could have filled a hall twice the size of ours. There was enormous interest on all levels, which is a tribute to the changing of attitudes regarding Catholic-Jewish relations.”Significantly, the final Joint Declaration stressed the “importance of educating the respective religious communities about the nature, substance and significance of these changes” and called on Israel’s Ministry of Education plus the Holy See’s Congregation for Catholic Education “to explore ways and means of how these developments can become an integral part of the required syllabus of educational institutions under their respective authorities.”  It also pointed out that “The mutual respect and friendship between us over recent years brings responsibility to present each other the way each sees themselves and defend the wellbeing of each other’s communities” - with special responsibilities of the religious majority for the minorities in each country. After the Conference, the Bi – Lateral Commission presented the Declaration to the Speaker of the knesset, Yuri Edelstein, drawing his attention to the special appeal regarding education.
Noting Pope Francis’ “past well-known engagement and friendship with the Jewish Community in Buenos Aires in particular” the Commission stated it “looks forward to the continuation and deepening of Christian-Jewish relations during his papacy, following on from the historic strides of his predecessors.”The same message of reciprocal friendship and solidarity was expressed a day later during the encounter between Pope Francis and President Peres --- who sent a   message of greeting to the Jerusalem Conference, noted with satisfaction by the Commission.Pope Francis raised the issue of anti-Semitism in the world and made clear that anti-Semitism goes against  the beliefs of Christians and “must be opposed in every country and corner of the globe. As Pope, I will not tolerate any expression of anti-Semitism.”With reference to the role of religions in ushering in peace, President Peres noted that “Sadly, there are many religious leaders in the Middle East and across the world who advocate terror and bloodshed and do so in the name of the Lord.  We all have an obligation to stand up and say in a loud and clear voice, that the Lord did not give anyone the authority to murder and carry out bloodshed.  Your voice” he said to Pope Francis, “has a great impact in the matter. “Francis suggested creating a global meeting of hope with the leaders of all the world’s faiths to produce a united message against violence and terror. The Nobel Peace Prize winner extended a warm invitation to Pope Francis to visit Israel, affirming his certainty that the Pope would be “warmly received by all Israelis” because “they see in you a leader of peace and good will. The sooner you visit, the better, as in these days a new opportunity is being created for peace and your arrival could contribute significantly to increasing the trust and belief in peace.”Francis thanked him and said he greatly wishes to visit Israel and would “try to find time to do so in the near future.” President Peres explained he believed “there is a chance to open negotiations between Israel and Palestine, and that Abu Mazen is a genuine partner for peace.  The Ministers of the Arab League once again expressed their support for a two state solution, which is also accepted by us, and a broad structure of support is being created for making progress.”Regarding more “political” issues, Israel’s President was received by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone,  its “Foreign Minister” Dominique Mamberti, by the President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino, and Italy’s new Premier Enrico Letta.  Discussions centered on Middle East trouble spots such as Syria and Iran. President Peres expressed Israel’s appreciation for the ongoing excellent relations with Italy and extended invitations to visit Israel. After meeting Italian Jewish community leaders,  Shimon Peres wound up his stay with a visit to Assisi where he was proclaimed “honorary citizen”.  There Israel’s President and Nobel Peace Prize winner grasped the opportunity to thank the town for what its Bishop and Friars did to save over 300 Jews from the Nazi-Fascist persecutions of World War II, providing refuge for all.  “Four priests and friars were named among the Righteous of Yad Vashem for having risked their lives to save our brethren” he said.  “On behalf of Israel, I thank you from the  bottom of my heart.”

Vatican invites Buddhists to help build culture of life

Thursday, May 2, 2013 6:50
Vatican City, May 2, 2013 / 07:22 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican’s top official for interreligious dialogue, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, sent a message to all Buddhists urging a joint commitment to “unmask the threats to human life.”In his annual letter for the feast of Vesakh, Cardinal Tauran highlighted the two faiths’ “noble teachings on the sanctity of human life” but lamented that “evil in different forms contributes to the dehumanization of the person” in society, “by mitigating the sense of humanity in individuals and communities.”“This tragic situation calls upon us, Buddhists and Christians, to join hands to unmask the threats to human life and to awaken the ethical consciousness of our respective followers to generate a spiritual and moral rebirth of individuals and societies,” he wrote in his May 2 letter.Vesakh is a major Buddhist holy day that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha.According to tradition, the historical Buddha was born, achieved enlightenment and passed away during the full moon of the month of May. This means that Vesakh is a movable feast, which this year falls on May 24 or 25, depending on the country it is celebrated in.On those days, Buddhists visit local temples to offer the monks food and to hear the teachings of the Buddha, taking special care to meditate and to observe the eight precepts of Buddhism. This year's message is entitled: “Christians and Buddhists: Loving, Defending, and Promoting Human Life.” The letter is signed by Cardinal Tauran, prefect of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and Father Miguel Angel Ayuso Guixot, the council’s secretary.Cardinal Tauran also recalled that Pope Francis believes in the importance of interreligious dialogue.“Pope Francis, at the very beginning of his ministry, has reaffirmed the necessity of a dialogue of friendship among followers of different religions. He noted that: ‘The Church is … conscious of the responsibility which all of us have for our world, for the whole of creation, which we must love and protect. There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy, and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation, and build peace.’”

Tauran on interreligious dialogue: “We’re not competitors but pilgrims searching for the truth”

Cardinal Tauran
Cardinal Tauran

The President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has sent out a number of messages on the occasion of the European bishops’ meeting in London

Luca Rolandi Rome “Believers know that “man does not just live off bread.” They are aware of the fact that they have to make their own personal contribution in their everyday lives and they must do so together, not as competitors but as pilgrims in search of the truth.” The President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran, said this in a speech he gave in London yesterday evening, at the meeting of bishops and representatives of Europe’s bishops’ conferences for relations with Muslims, organised by the CCEE, due to finish tomorrow.During the opening session, the cardinal highlighted the importance of Benedict XVI’s visit to Lebanon, where he met with Muslims religious leaders, to foster Christian-Muslim dialogue. He also drew attention to the importance of the creation of the inter faith centre in Vienna “which could be a new channel for denouncing religious freedom violations and for encouraging and sharing positive experiences.” The Archbishop of Bordeaux, Jean-Pierre Ricard, also took the floor during the opening session, saying: “The international landscape has changed considerably in the wake of the “Arab Springs” in Egypt and Tunisia, the Libyan war, the upheaval in Syria and the repercussions it has had across the entire Middle East.”The French cardinal said these changes “have had an effect on public opinion in our European countries.” There are various forms of interreligious dialogue in Europe: “everyday dialogue,” dialogue through “work” that fosters collaboration for the overall development of mankind, dialogue of theological exchange and finally, dialogue of religious experience “in which people with deep religious roots share their personal spiritual experiences.”Cardinal Tauran’s message is a very important one. It was addressed to the Buddhist world on the occasion of the annual Feast of Vesakh. The cardinal linked the following pillars of Christianity and Buddhism, to get across the real essence of this year’s message: The protection of human life: “In order for there to be a genuine, fraternal dialogue between us, Buddhists and Christians need to build on the things we have in common, first and foremost, our shared deep respect for life.”“Loving kindness towards all beings” is the “cornerstone” of Buddhist ethics, Tauran went on to say. Love for God and love for one’s neighbour are “central to the moral teaching of Jesus.” The cardinal then said that in his opinion, “a climate of peace urgently needs to be created, both for Buddhists and Christians, on the basis of the authentic legacy of our religious traditions, in order to love, defend and foster human life.”
In the letter addressed to Buddhists, bishops quoted Pope Francis’ words on the “need for dialogue and friendship between the followers of different religious faiths.” It concludes: “let us continue to collaborate in a spirit of renewed compassion and fraternity, to alleviate the suffering of the human family, protecting the sacredness of human life.”
