LONDON, United Kingdom — The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine significantly reduces virus transmission and is highly protective after a single dose, according to an Oxford University study, which the British government said Wednesday vindicated its inoculation strategy.“It does show the world that the Oxford jab works, it works well,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC radio, hailing the study’s findings as “good news.”“It slows transmission by around two-thirds, so it categorically supports the strategy that we’re undertaking,” Hancock said.The study’s findings came amid much debate over the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca shot among the elderly.Although the European Medicines Agency recommended it for adults of all ages last week, several countries have advised against administering the AstraZeneca vaccine to older people.Germany has already said it will not advise over 65s to get it, Italy’s medicines agency on Saturday approved the vaccine for all adults but recommended alternatives for people aged over 55, and French President Emmanuel Macron last week said the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was “quasi-ineffective” for those over 65.The UK has been under lockdown since December with schools closed and no definite end-date, although a review of the situation is expected in mid-February.The country has had 3.8 million cases and 108,013 deaths.-Dosing schedule-The Oxford study, which is awaiting peer review, found that those who had been vaccinated with a single dose of the vaccine were 67 percent less likely to test positive with a PCR test, “suggesting the potential for a substantial reduction in transmission.”It also provided backing for the UK’s strategy of administering as many first doses of vaccine to high-risk groups as possible and allowing a 12-week interval before the second dose, which has been criticized by some experts.The other vaccine already being rolled out in the UK, by Pfizer-BioNTech, was designed to be administered with a shorter interval.“We are confident that the 12-week dosing schedule is the right one for both of the vaccines that we’re using in the UK,” Hancock said Wednesday.Researchers found that a single dose was 76% effective in preventing virus symptoms after 22 days and for up to 90 days, while it did not prevent asymptomatic illness.It was more effective to wait 90 days than to administer the second dose, researchers found, “providing further support for current policy.”The survey had 17,177 participants in Britain, Brazil and South Africa. The data covers the period up to December 7, 2020. None of those studied were hospitalized.The vaccine invented by scientists at the University of Oxford is being developed and manufactured by AstraZeneca.The vaccine is cheap to produce and is being sold at cost price. It can also be stored at fridge temperature, while the Pfizer vaccine requires extremely cold storage.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — In May 2018 a six-year-old Honduran boy named Andres was wrested kicking and screaming from his father by US border guards implementing Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy toward undocumented immigrants.It took another 10 months for the pair to be reunited — but they were among the lucky ones.Hundreds of migrant children like Andres are still waiting to rejoin parents after being taken away by the Trump administration.President Joe Biden has prioritized creating a special task force to reunify the families as part of his sweeping redo of Trump’s immigration policies, which focused on deterring migration from Central America.“It was a moral failure and a national shame that the prior administration used family separation as a weapon against desperate families and children,” an administration official told journalists, briefing on Biden’s plans.“The Biden administration is committed to remedy this awful harm the Trump administration inflicted on families,” said the official.Trump came to power in 2017 promising to halt the mass movement of undocumented migrants over the southern border.But an initial crackdown only slowed the flow, with tens of thousands of individuals and families — especially from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador — crossing each month, and little mechanism in place to send them back.A year later he announced the zero-tolerance program, declaring that any undocumented border crossers would be arrested and charged with a crime.As part of the new regime children were separated from their parents, on a promise that families would be reunited within weeks. But this did not happen in thousands of cases.The policy was applied with little mercy, court filings showed.After being taken from his father Jacinto, Andres went into the custody of US officials, while his father was deported to Honduras.While their separation lasted less than a year, it took a full 16 months to reunite 13-year-old Karin from the mother she was torn from as she was placed in handcuffs.Another youngster, seven-year-old Diana, went to sleep with her father in an immigration facility and woke up to find he was gone, taken away by US authorities.A public outcry and lawsuits forced the Trump administration to halt the separations, but for as many as 5,000 children, the damage had been done.Trump’s immigration officials kept poor records and did little to cooperate with groups seeking to help the children, forcing more lawsuits.According to a document in one of those cases dated January, 611 children had still not been reconnected with their parents.Underscoring the issue of poor documentation, the court filing says that for 392 migrant children, their parents “are believed” to have been deported.For another 201, the parents “are believed” to be in the United States. And for 18, there are no known contacts.No one really knows how many children remain without their families but the figure is estimated to be “as high as 1,000,” said the Biden official.The new task force will have to come up with policies to deal with reunifications. A key question: will the children who are reunited be permitted to stay in the United States legally with their parents? WASHINGTON — Donald Trump was “singularly responsible” for the deadly US Capitol riot last month and acquitting the former president could damage American democracy, lawmakers leading the impeachment case said Tuesday, a week before his Senate trial begins.Trump became the first US president in history to be impeached twice when the House of Representatives charged him last month with inciting the mayhem inflicted by his followers when they invaded Congress on January 6.In a pre-trial brief, the House impeachment managers made their case for the Senate to convict, saying the American people should be protected “against a president who provokes violence to subvert our democracy.”Trump’s impeachment was triggered by a speech he delivered to a crowd on the National Mall just before the riot, telling them Joe Biden had stolen the presidential election and that they needed to march on Congress and “fight like hell.”The mob stormed the Capitol, fatally wounded one police officer, wrecked furniture and forced terrified lawmakers and vice president Mike Pence to hide, interrupting a ceremony to put the legal stamp on Biden’s victory.The nine impeachment managers, all Democrats, argued in their sweeping 77-page document that Trump’s speech had whipped the crowd into a “frenzy.”Trump, they said, “is singularly responsible for the violence and destruction” during the riot that left five people dead.“In a grievous betrayal of his oath of office, President Trump incited a violent mob to attack the United States Capitol,” wrote the lawmakers, led by congressman Jamie Raskin.“If provoking an insurrectionary riot against a joint session of Congress after losing an election is not an impeachable offense, it is hard to imagine what would be,” the brief states.Failure to convict Trump “would embolden future leaders to attempt to retain power by any and all means — and would suggest that there is no line a president cannot cross.”No ‘January Exception’Although Trump was impeached on January 13, his term ended a week later — before the beginning of the Senate trial.“The present proceedings are moot and thus a nullity since the 45th president cannot be removed from an office he no longer occupies,” Trump lawyers Bruce Castor and David Schoen wrote in their own brief outlining the case for the defense.They said the trial itself was unconstitutional now that Trump has left the White House.They also said Trump’s speech in Washington, and his repeated refusal to accept the election results, amounted to protected free speech.“The president exercised his First Amendment right under the Constitution to express his belief that the election results were suspect,” the lawyers wrote.But House Democrat Adam Schiff, lead manager in Trump’s first impeachment trial, which ended in acquittal in early 2020, said such a defense was a “false” argument.Democrats also rejected the reasoning that Trump cannot be tried once out of office.“There is no ‘January Exception’ to impeachment or any other provision of the Constitution,” they wrote, adding that a president must answer for his conduct in office “from his first day in office through his last.”They point to multiple videos — expected to be used as evidence in the trial — which they say show Trump inciting the crowd to commit violence, and show rioters chanting “Hang Mike Pence!” and hunting for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.The pre-trial brief also noted how rioters stated publicly that they stormed the Capitol at Trump’s urging.“We were invited here… by the President of the United States!” one rioter yelled at police officers, according to the brief.Trump spent much of his time after the November 3 vote claiming that the election was stolen.Dozens of courts in multiple states found the argument baseless.But impeachment managers argued that Trump’s constant promoting of unfounded voter fraud accusations fueled his supporters into backing efforts to overturn the election.When those efforts failed, the Democrats wrote, Trump “summoned a mob to Washington, exhorted them into a frenzy, and aimed them like a loaded cannon down Pennsylvania Avenue.”Asked whether the Biden administration was concerned that Trump’s defense team might incite further violence by continuing to argue his claim of election fraud, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki was cautious.“Watching the potential for violence is something that we will do closely,” she said.The Senate’s 100 members take up the impeachment trial on February 9, and Democrats acknowledge a conviction is unlikely.With the chamber split 50-50, Democrats would need at least 17 Republicans to break with Trump in order to surpass the two-thirds threshold necessary for conviction.Should that occur, a subsequent vote would be held, with a simple majority required to ban Trump from holding public office in the future.

Archaeologists in Egypt have found a cache of eerie gold-tongued mummies in tombs cut out of rock near the northern city of Alexandria.The 16 burials date back some 2,000 years to the Greek and Roman eras. They were unearthed by an Egyptian-Dominican team near the ancient Taposiris Magna temple.The mummies were poorly preserved and characteristic of their era, which came long after the heyday of Egypt’s pyramid-building old dynasties.The tongues were made of gold foil, likely in the belief they would allow the deceased to speak in the afterlife to Osiris, the ancient Egyptian religion’s lord of the underworld and judge of the dead.They were likely placed in the dead person’s mouth during the embalming process, after the actual tongue was removed.The team also found a woman’s funeral mask, golden flakes representing leaves on a gold wreathe and eight marble masks.Researchers working at the same site have previously found ancient coins bearing the name and image of Queen Cleopatra VII, the fabled final queen of Egypt during the close of the Greek-speaking Ptolemaic Kingdom.She ruled from 51 BC until her death in 30 BC, when Rome took over the land.

A prototype of a SpaceX rocket the company hopes will one day journey to Mars crashed in a fireball as it tried to land upright after a test flight Tuesday.It was the second such accident after the last prototype of Starship met a similar fate in December.“We had again another great flight,” said SpaceX announcer John Insprucker on an online broadcast.“We’ve just got to work on that landing a little bit,” he added.The company’s founder Elon Musk was uncharacteristically quiet on social media, having announced the night before he was “off Twitter for a while.”The stainless steel rocket, dubbed SN9 or “Serial Number 9,” was cleared for lift-off from Boca Chica, Texas by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) less than a day earlier.The rocket launched smoothly around 2:35 p.m. local time (2035 GMT) and progressively shut down its engines as it reached a height of six miles (10 kilometers), then performed a series of test maneuvers in a horizontal “belly flop” position.It was when the rocket attempted to return to a vertical position for landing that the problems began, with the footage showing it came in too fast and at a bad angle.It landed with a deafening crash, and exploded into bright orange flames and a dust cloud, but the fire did not spread.The company’s next prototype rocket, SN10, appeared to be undamaged on a nearby launchpad.Insprucker put a positive spin on the crash.“We demonstrated the ability to transition the engines to the landing propellant tanks,” he said. “The subsonic reentry looked very good and stable like we saw last December, so we’ve got a lot of good data on flap control.”The company intends to proceed with its next launch “in the near future,” he added.Tuesday’s launch was delayed by several days over problems stemming from SpaceX’s last Starship test on December 9, which also went up in flames.SpaceX had sought a waiver to exceed the maximum allowable risk to the public of Starship SN8.The FAA denied the request, but SpaceX went ahead anyway, landing the company in hot water.The regulator denied SpaceX the opportunity to launch last week and asked them to carry out corrective actions, finally granting its approval Monday night.The company hopes the reusable, 394-foot (120-meter) rocket system will one day carry crew and cargo to fly to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

A Likud minister close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday the US will never attack Iran’s nuclear program, and Israel will have to decide whether to launch such a strike alone or come to terms with a nuclear-armed Islamic Republic.The statement came as tensions heated in the Middle East, with Iran ramping up its nuclear program with ongoing violations of its 2015 deal with world powers, and the US and Israel issuing threats and warnings.Some of the activity is tied to the changing of the guard at the White House. The Trump administration stepped up its pressure on Iran as its tenure drew to a close, while the Biden administration is expected to take a softer approach, despite opposition from Israel and its other regional allies.The United States will never attack the nuclear facilities in Iran. Israel must decide whether it will accept a nuclear Iran,” Tzachi Hanegbi told the Kan public broadcaster. “Israel will be forced to act independently to remove this danger.”“It’s possible that in the future there will be no choice [but to attack Iran militarily],” Hanegbi said. “I hope that when our leadership is met with this dilemma, it won’t accept [a nuclear-armed Iran].”Hanegbi said the Iranians have proved to have a “very limited” capacity to retaliate against Israel. The Jewish state has waged an air campaign against Iranian-linked targets in Syria in recent years without any serious repercussions. In fact, as Morocco’s King Mohammed VI made clear soon after, Rabat had agreed to re-establish a liason office with an eye toward expanding ties in the future.Nearly two months later, Israel’s man in Rabat says he’s laying the groundwork for that anticipated deepening of government and civil ties, though the Moroccans appear to prefer taking the rekindled relationship slow.“We are trying to expand our bilateral ties with the Moroccans in many different fields,” envoy David Govrin told The Times of Israel this week. “The potential is very high.”Govrin is currently the head of Israel’s liaison office in Rabat, and is likely to become Israel’s ambassador should full diplomatic ties be established. The judge agreed to reduce his sentence to 16 months, the records show.“Your Honor, frankly, in all the years, which is now more than 30 that I’ve been doing this, I’ve never had a client as prolific in terms of cooperating in any respect,” said Tarrio’s lawyer at the time, Jeffrey Feiler, according to the transcript.An email seeking comment was not immediately returned from a lawyer representing Tarrio in his current case. The tiny, vibrantly colored Iron Age cloth pieces are the earliest evidence of this precious dye in the entire Southern Levant and shed new light on the early Edomite kingdom and Israelite kingdoms 3,000 years ago — a period when the Bible details the conquering of the Edomites by King David.Also called “true” or “Tyrian purple,” the vibrant, millennia-lasting color is produced by dye glands gathered from three species of live murex sea snails on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. To reach the famed King Solomon Copper Mines at Timna near the shore of the Red Sea, the cloth would have traveled hundreds of kilometers, which only added to its prestige and value.“It is a very early period to find ‘true purple’ in use and it’s a very strange location,” Tel Aviv University Prof. Erez Ben-Yosef told The Times of Israel Thursday. “It’s deep in the desert, where we didn’t [traditionally] think these prestigious materials were in use.”The discovery, said Ben-Yosef, offers “additional evidence for our new understanding of nomadic people at that time period, at the time of the emergence of these ancient kingdoms of Israel, Edom, Moab, Amon, the local kingdoms of the biblical time.” Ben-Yosef has excavated at Timna since 2013.The true purple “argaman” dye and its associated azure “techelet” variant (created through variant processing of the snails’ dye) are mentioned dozens of times in the Hebrew Bible and in the circa 690 BCE Sennacherib’s Cylinder, among other texts. The true purple is associated with royalty and the priesthood, as well as textiles used in the Tabernacle and Jewish Temple.The cloth and the murex snails themselves were given an in-depth, hands-on study in the new interdisciplinary, collaborative research paper published this week by the prestigious PLOS One scientific journal. The investigation took the researchers from field excavations of Timna, to Israeli university laboratories — to fish markets in Milano and Palermo, Sicily.Until now, the earliest textile evidence of the royal purple dye were dated to at least 1,000 years later in the Roman period, when it was highly valued.The paper, “Early evidence of royal purple dyed textile from Timna Valley (Israel),” was co-authored by Dr. Naama Sukenik from the Israel Antiquities Authority and Ben-Yosef, in collaboration with Prof. Zohar Amar, Dr. David Iluz and Dr. Alexander Varvak from Bar-Ilan University and the IAA’s Dr. Orit Shamir.Ben-Yosef explained that Timna is first and foremost known for its copper, which was mined by ancient Land of Israel dwellers as early as the 5th millennia BCE, going all the way to the early Islamic period some 1,400 years ago. Even recently, he said, the nascent state of Israel had a small factory that produced copper there.The dry climatic conditions at Timna, deep in the Arava Desert, allow for the unusually good preservation of organic materials, similar to the much later Roman era textile and leather finds discovered in the Judaean caves and at Masada.What is noteworthy in Timna, said Ben-Yosef, is that the “big story” is related to the early Iron Age. “We’re talking about the 11th to the 9th centuries BCE, and it is a very debated period in the history of the land,” the period attributed to the rise of the biblical kingdoms of Judah and Israel.Alongside remnants of textiles and other indications of relatively luxurious conditions, the picture painted after continued excavations is changing the view of the nomadic Edomite, said Ben-Yosef. “We see it as the early Edomite Kingdom,” versus a mere tribal camp.With Timna’s arid desert, “We find stuff that you usually don’t find in regular excavations, such as textiles, ropes, leather, things that usually decay and are not preserved,” said Ben-Yosef. “So we have a unique window into the people of the region at that very early period through these amazing and unique organic materials. We have dozens and dozens of fragments of textiles and ropes, cordage, basketry, things that usually you don’t find.”Sukenik, the IAA’s curator of organic finds, told The Times of Israel that every year the collaborative research group takes a trip to the Timna site to access — and marvel at — the extremely rare ancient finds.The new finds were located in Slaves Hill, arguably the largest copper smelting camp in the valley, which the team has excavated for the past six years. While excavating, the archaeologists discerned tiny pieces of textiles of many types emerging from the ground. Some were derived from rough tent coverings, some from sacks, and some of the pieces were brightly colored.Sukenik said the team noted the brilliant purple peeking out on three of the many scraps of textiles excavated that year.“We saw a few pieces in which the shade was really special. We really wanted it to be argaman [true purple], the most expensive dye in the ancient textile industry,” Sukenik said.-From field to lab-The textile pieces were taken back to the Bar Ilan University laboratory, where it was confirmed that molecules 6-monobromoindigotin and 6,6-dibromoindigotin — unique to the murex sea snails which produce the true purple dye — were discovered on the cloth scraps after High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyses, which is used to identify organic dyestuff.According to the paper, “Identifying the organic dye colorants in archaeological textiles is a complex task due to the low concentration of the molecules in the fibers and the limited amount of material available for destructive analysis.”Hitting upon this result was a “Sisyphean task,” said Sukenik, and required very intensive work.Upon learning that the dye was indeed the ancient true purple, Sukenik said, “Personally, it made me really happy.” She said that a trove of ancient Murex trunculus snail shells were recently excavated at the Tel Shikmona site in northern Israel, dating back to the 10th-7th centuries BCE. Being organic material, one of the Timna cloth pieces was also sent for radiocarbon 14 testing at a laboratory in Oxford, where the date of 1,000 BCE was calculated.If we were to peek into David and Solomon’s closet we’d see similar clothing — and perhaps even more true purple-During the early Iron Age, “We already knew that there was a true purple textile dye industry,” she said, but until now, there had been no dyed textiles. According to the paper, the first archaeological evidence for use of the dye dates from the 19th century BCE in the form of murex shells.“I’m so happy that Erez [Ben-Yosef] gave us the opportunity to peek into the clothes closet from the period of David and Solomon and see the wardrobe of the elite that lived in the period at the copper mines,” she said.“I suppose that if we were to peek into David and Solomon’s closet we’d see similar clothing — and perhaps even more true purple,” said Sukenik.Getting hands dirty for science-Discovering that the 3,000-year-old textile scraps were dyed with royal purple was only one step of the journey undertaken by this ambitious research project. Another chapter not recorded in the PLOS One paper saw Bar Ilan University Prof. Zohar Amar visit the fish markets of Italy to conduct experiments on the three species of snail.The three species of snail are endangered in Israel and Amar told The Times of Israel that he couldn’t obtain enough samples to truly conduct his experiments. So he took himself to Milano, which holds the largest fish market in Europe. There, the snails are eaten as part of the varied Italian diet and two of the species — Spiny Dye-Murex (Murex brandaris) and Banded Dye-Murex (Murex trunculus) — are plentifully traded in the market.Amar rented a laboratory and hired local staff to conduct hundreds of experiments on thousands of snails. Each snail’s dye gland, he said, only holds a minuscule amount — circa one gram. So he ordered a massive supply, which arrived in special refrigerators that kept the snails fresh and alive.Even in ancient texts such as the writings of the Roman author Pliny the Elder and the Jewish Talmud, it was emphasized that the snail glands be procured fresh, which creates the best dye. Amar said, having used dried glands that were shipped to Israel in some experiments, he can now vouch for the value of fresh specimens.The glands were traditionally dried in the sun, but Amar imported an oven from Israel to speed up the process.“It was very hard work, very stinky,” he said, much like working in a fresh fish market, he said.What they ate, I threw away, and what they threw away I used-The Italian fishermen who delivered the snails “thought I was a bit crazy. What they ate, I threw away, and what they threw away I used,” he laughed.Two thousand years ago, the rabbis discussed how impure creatures such as the sea snails — forbidden from an observant Jewish diet — could be the source of a dye used in such sacred spaces as the Tabernacle and Temple.Amar answered that through his experimentation with the snails, he realized that nothing of the meat of the snail remains. Through the chemical processing of the snail glands into dye, “the material turns into something else.”While two of the species were in plentiful supply, locating the third species saw Amar take out the big guns — his Italian mother in law. With her help, the third species, Red-Mouthed Rock-shell (Murex haemastoma), was sourced in Palermo, Sicily. He traveled to the Mediterranean’s largest island, only to be disappointed when inclement weather caused the fisherman to come back without a catch. Only after a subsequent trip could he successfully harvest the third snail’s dye glands.Although Amar had studied the theory behind the preparation of the true purple and associated azure dyes, “in conducting in the practical work I learned a lot about the historical sources. It was like time tunnel to the past,” he said.He conducted his initial experiments bare-handed, only to discover that the dye that lasts millennia on archaeological artifacts quickly stained his hands blue for weeks. He said that it gave insight to a Gemara passage that had always mystified him: The Gemara relates that when priests go in front of the congregation to give the traditional priestly blessing, they cannot have discolored hands. And if they do, it is only permissible for them to give the blessing if the entire congregation is likewise dyed. After walking around with blue hands for a couple weeks, he understood just how distracting people found it.“When I returned home on the plane, I had to hide my hands,” Amar laughed.

Gnarled and ubiquitous, a symbol of peace and longevity, the olive tree has been crowned Israel’s national tree.Winning nearly 33 percent of some 148,000 votes cast online, the olive was declared a national symbol on Thursday, which marks Tu Bishvat, known as the Jewish arbor day.The contest was held by the tree-planting pioneers of the Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), which held the contest to celebrate 120 years of existence.The olive tree now joins a national flower, the anemone; and bird, the hoopoe.Aside from perhaps the hoopoe, which was declared by then-president Shimon Peres, these national symbols are informal and not necessarily officially recognized by the state. CSENGELE, Hungary (AP) — In a small room lined with religious texts, a rabbi demonstrates how knives are sharpened and inspected before they are put to use slitting the throats of chickens, geese and other poultry at a kosher slaughterhouse in Hungary.A shochet, someone trained and certified to slaughter animals according to Jewish tradition, whets a knife on increasingly fine stones before drawing the blade across a fingernail to feel for any imperfections in the steel that might inhibit a smooth, clean cut and cause unnecessary pain.“One of the most important things in kosher is that the animal doesn’t suffer,” said Rabbi Jacob Werchow, who oversees production at Quality Poultry, a 3 1/2-year-old slaughterhouse that supplies nearly 40% of Europe’s kosher poultry market and a large portion of the foie gras sold in Israel.The methods employed at the facility in the village of Csengele are based on ancient Judaic principles commanding the humane treatment of living creatures. They also are at the center of a debate about how to balance animal rights and religious rights as parts of Europe limit or effectively ban the ritual slaughter practices of Jews and Muslims.Companies like Quality Poultry have found new export markets since the European Union’s highest court last month upheld a law in Belgium’s Flanders region that prohibited slaughtering animals without first stunning them into unconsciousness. But the European Court of Justice ruling also has provoked fears of eventual EU-wide prohibitions on ritual slaughter, and aroused memories of periods when Europe’s Jews faced cruel persecution.“This decision doesn’t only affect the Belgian Jewish community, it affects all of us,” said Rabbi Slomo Koves of the Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities, which owns the Csengele slaughterhouse. “If this is the case in Belgium and the court has given it moral approval, that might start a process on a larger scale. If you go down this logic, the next step is you also cannot sell meat like this in these countries.”The EU has required the pre-stunning of animals since 1979, but allows member states to make religion-based exceptions. Most do, but along with Flanders and the Wallonia region of Belgium, Slovenia, Denmark and Sweden, as well as non-EU members Switzerland, Iceland and Norway, have done away with religious exemptions, meaning kosher and halal meat must be imported.Animal rights groups say that slitting the throats of livestock and poultry birds while they are conscious causes suffering that amounts to animal cruelty. Stunning methods vary, but the procedure most often is performed through electric shock or a bolt pistol to the animal’s skull.“Reversible stunning is the bare minimum we can do to protect animals,” said Reineke Hameleers, CEO of the Brussels-based Eurogroup for Animals. “They should be rendered unconscious before being killed.”The situation is not so cut-and-dried for religious observers. Jewish law forbids injury or damage to animal tissues before slaughter, and modern stunning practices can cause death or irreparable injuries that would render meat and poultry non-kosher, according to Koves.Although some Muslim religious authorities consider pre-slaughter stunning permissible, local Muslim groups argued that the stunning requirements in Flanders and Wallonia grew out of efforts by Belgium’s Islamophobic far-right to harass their communities.Rabbis Koves and Werchow said they believe the kosher slaughter method, known as shechita, is no less humane than the methods used in conventional meat production. In addition to the intensive process of sharpening and inspecting the knives, the shochet is trained to make the cut in a single smooth motion, severing the animal’s nerves and draining the blood from the brain in seconds.“Whatever you think about…whether kosher slaughter is better for the animal than regular slaughter, you are basically putting animal rights ahead of human rights,” Koves said. “If people are going to ban our rights to have kosher food, that means that they are limiting our human rights. And this, especially in a place like Europe, brings very bad memories to us.”Laws requiring the pre-slaughter stunning of animals appeared in some European countries as early as the late 19th century. Adolf Hitler mandated the practice in 1933 just after becoming chancellor of Germany, one of the first laws imposed by the Nazis.Jewish and Muslim groups challenged the Flanders law in Belgium’s Constitutional Court, which referred it to the European Court of Justice for a ruling on its compatibility with EU law.The Court of Justice’s advocate general advised the court to strike the Flanders law down, arguing it violated the rights of certain faiths to preserve their essential religious rites. But the court disagreed, finding the law “allow(s) a fair balance to be struck between the importance attached to animal welfare and the freedom of Jewish and Muslim believers to manifest their religion.”The animal welfare minister for the Brussels region of Belgium, where stunning is not mandatory, said the ruling would breathe new life into the mandatory stunning debate there. An Israeli-led research team says it has created an unprecedented “molecular Google Map” of a brain’s memory center, in a first application of technology that may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other diseases.The breakthrough allows researchers to zoom in on RNA (ribonucleic acid) at nanoscale resolution without having to destroy the tissue to remove the RNA for analysis, giving a view of brain tissue that was hitherto out of doctors’ reach.The ability to sequence RNA, a building block of life that uses the information from DNA to create proteins, has transformed biology and medicine. But when trying to analyze RNA from brain tissue that had been destroyed, doctors could only get a much less detailed view — like a list of cities instead of a map — creating a major barrier to research into diseases that affect brain function.On Thursday night, a team from Bar Ilan University, Harvard and MIT published peer-reviewed research in the journal Science detailing how they managed to analyze and map out the hippocampus of a brain, its main memory center, without destroying the tissue.The brain tissue they used came from a mouse, but they have also proved their method on various human tissues. The researchers say their technology could have benefits in treating diseases of the brain like Alzheimer’s, and others including cancer.“It’s the equivalent of having a vast and detailed Google Map of the location of genes inside the brain, and other tissues, rather than a low-resolution image or a simple list of the genes that are there,” said Dr. Shahar Alon, the study’s lead author.“This new method allows us to visualize and measure millions of RNA molecules within the tissue with nanoscale precision, without having to extract them as we did previously,” he told The Times of Israel. “We can zoom in, just like you can on Google Maps, and see the molecules very close up.”To develop the new method, Alon modified a widely-available gel made from acrylamide, “the same substance that is used in diapers to absorb urine,” and used it to swell tissue to around four times its size. He then customized existing microscopes to give a detailed picture of the RNA.Analyzing RNA in situ means that doctors don’t only receive information on the identity of molecules, but also where exactly they are located inside tissue, which can prove valuable in advancing the understanding of diseases, Alon said.This potential is clearest in the brain, where the location of molecules is known to be crucial for proper functioning, especially for processes such as learning and memory, Alon stated.“We believe this could give a new glimpse into how Alzheimer’s affects the location of genes in the brain, and this could help in developing new treatments,” he said.RNA can be used as a “marker” or tool for getting a broad picture of cell behavior in a tissue, which means the new research has potential for analyzing cancerous cells, Alon said. This is because the technology can be used to show how cancer cells in a particular patient are being impacted by immune system cells.“One of the big mysteries of immunotherapy is why it works well in some patients and why it doesn’t in others. The maps we are building could reveal the difference, in biological mechanisms, between patients who are reacting and those who aren’t.“Imagine if you could take a biopsy of a patient and know in advance, with some certainty, whether immunotherapy is going to help this person or not. This could be helpful for doctors’ decision making, and in the development of new immunotherapy drugs which help patients who are not responding to current drugs,” he said.

JTA — American Jews with ties to a small community of Jews in Uganda are condemning a decision by Israel’s Interior Ministry to reject the right of those Jews to immigrate to Israel.The ministry was responding to a Supreme Court petition by Kibita Yosef, a Ugandan Jew who had requested permission to make aliyah.Yosef, who converted to Judaism in 2008 under the auspices of the Conservative movement, first applied to immigrate to Israel while studying in a yeshiva there under the Law of Return. The law allows all Jews, including those who have converted, to become citizens.But the Interior Ministry, which handles citizenship, rejected Yosef’s application, according to the Haaretz daily. Yosef has appealed to the Supreme Court, which is expected to make its decision next week and could overrule the ministry.The conflict could have potential consequences for Jews worldwide.“We’re profoundly disappointed by the Interior Ministry’s decision,” said Rabbi Jacob Blumenthal, CEO of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly, which has a longstanding relationship with the Abayudaya Jewish community in Uganda. “We see it as a profound insult to the Conservative movement.”The Abayudaya began practicing Judaism in 1919 after a Ugandan leader, Semei Kakungulu, declared himself a Jew and began adopting Jewish practices. In 2002, the Conservative movement began overseeing official conversions in the community.The Ugandan community is affiliated with the Masorti Olami, the international organization representing Conservative communities worldwide, and is home to a chapter of Marom, a Conservative movement youth group. Gershom Sizomu later became the first Ugandan rabbi after his ordination at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, the Conservative movement’s seminary in Los Angeles. A woman from the community, Shoshanna Nambi, is now a rabbinical student at the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.Blumenthal said he had visited the community in Uganda and seen “the vibrancy of their Jewish life” and “a deep love of Israel and the Jewish people.” The Jewish Agency, the para-governmental organization in Israel that facilitates and encourages immigration to Israel, has recognized the Jewishness of Ugandan Jews.But the Interior Ministry, which has the final say over matters of citizenship and is run by Aryeh Deri, head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, has taken a different approach.In a court document this summer, the ministry established a new policy on “emerging” Jewish communities like the Abayudaya, Haaretz reported. According to the policy, these communities would not be eligible to immigrate under the Law of Return, which says that those who convert to Judaism in a “recognized” Jewish community are eligible to immigrate.Yosef, whose immigration status is in question, is being represented by the IsraeliReligious Action Center.The ultimate ruling in his case could have far-ranging ramifications for Jews living outside of Israel.“Part of this is a battle for who gets to define Judaism,” said Rabbi Bradley Artson, dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies.The validity of conversion by non-Orthodox rabbis, and even by Orthodox rabbis who do not meet the standards of the ultra-Orthodox Israeli Chief Rabbinate, has been a contentious subject for years. Converts to Judaism who move to Israel whose conversions are not recognized by the Chief Rabbinate cannot marry in Israel, for the Chief Rabbinate controls marriages. Reform and Conservative conversions performed in Israel have not been recognized for years.While the Yosef decision may not immediately impact the potential immigration status of non-Orthodox converts in established Jewish communities, the rejection of the Ugandan community’s conversions could cast doubt on other conversions performed by those same Conservative rabbis.“Let’s be clear that denying that the Abayudaya are authentically Jewish is on some level saying that my rabbinical school isn’t an authentic rabbinical school and it’s saying that I’m not an authentic rabbi,” said Artson, who was involved in the conversion of hundreds of Ugandan Jews.Rabbi Jill Jacobs, executive director of T’ruah, a rabbinic human rights organization, condemned the Interior Ministry’s position on the Yosef case as “pure racism.”“I’m very proud that the Conservative Movement, to which I belong, has forged a strong relationship w/this community, including ordaining a rabbi & fighting for community’s rights in Israel,” she wrote in a tweet. “This is pure racism on the part of the state. The High Court must do the right thing.”Asked whether the decision had to do with race, Artson said he wasn’t sure what the “inner motivations” were of the ministry.“But it certainly has the appearance of racism,” he said.Blumenthal said the decision to reject Yosef’s claim would only further divide American Jews from Israel.“It’s one more example of a wedge that the Israeli government is driving between some in Israel and the Jewish people outside Israel,” he said.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday “there are reasons to hope” for progress toward ending the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict after years of inaction.He said the United Nations will explore all initiatives to facilitate “a true peace process” based on the two-state solution.Clearly referring to the former US administration without naming then-president Donald Trump, the UN chief said “we were completely locked down in a situation in which there was no progress visible.”Guterres also made no mention of Tuesday’s announcement by US President Joe Biden’s administration that it was restoring relations with the Palestinians and renewing aid to Palestinian refugees, a reversal of Trump’s cutoff and a key element of its new support for a two-state solution.But the secretary-general made clear that Biden’s more even-handed approach opened the possibility of meetings of the Quartet of Middle East mediators — the US, UN, European Union and Russia — that were previously blocked, as well as broader peace efforts.“We have tried for a long time to make the Quartet meet, but we never had the agreement of all the members for that to be possible,” Guterres told a press conference. “And we have tried to have inclusive other formulas — possible of an enlarged Quartet with several other important players in the region, and unfortunately, this has not been possible until now.”“I think it became possible now,” he said, but stressed that a peace process can only be successful if it is based on a two-state solution and “all the international agreements that already exist in this regard.”Guterres expressed hope that elections “in the state of Palestine” and elections in Israel “will also contribute to create a positive environment for the future of the peace process… and for the rights of the Palestinian people, namely, its right to self-determination and its right to independence, to be fully respected.”The Palestinians have scheduled legislative elections on May 22 and presidential elections on July 31 and Israel will hold legislative elections on March 23.For more than three decades, the Palestinians have sought an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but imposed a crippling blockade when the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas seized power from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s forces in 2007. Israel says the blockade is necessary to limit Hamas’s ability to arm itself. Israel and Hamas have fought three major conflicts since 2008.There have been no substantive peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in years, and the two sides are fiercely divided over the core issues of the conflict.At Tuesday’s Security Council meeting, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki called for revival of the Quartet and reiterated Abbas’s call for an international peace conference “that can signal a turning point in this conflict.” He also expressed hope that “the US will play an important role in multilateral efforts for peace in the Middle East.”Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is convinced that the Quartet, working closely with both sides and Arab states, “can play a very, very effective role.”In support of Abbas’s call for an international conference, Lavrov proposed holding a ministerial meeting this spring or summer with the Quartet and Egypt, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as well as Saudi Arabia to analyze the current situation and assist “in launching a dialogue” between Israeli’s and Palestinians.Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan said the government remains willing to make peace “when there is a willing partner,” but he accused Abbas of inciting violence. He said Abbas should come to the negotiating table “without making outrageous demands and not call for another pointless international conference.”Former president Donald Trump’s administration provided unprecedented support to Israel, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv, slashing financial assistance for the Palestinians and reversing course on the illegitimacy of Israeli settlements on land claimed by the Palestinians.The peace plan unveiled by Trump a year ago envisioned a disjointed Palestinian state that turned over key parts of the West Bank to Israel, siding with Israel on key contentious issues including borders and the status of Jerusalem and Jewish settlements. It was vehemently rejected by the Palestinians.
