2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

PSALMS 97:3
3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

EZEKIEL 5:15-17
15  So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the (ARAB/MUSLIM) nations that are round about thee,(ISRAEL) when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.
16  When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
17  So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts,(WHEN RUSSIA/MUSLIMS GET DEFEATED THIER BODIES GET EATEN BY BIRDS,ANIMALS IN ISRAEL MIGRATION SEASON) and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee;(NUKES) and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.

REVELATION 14:18-20
18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
20 And the winepress was trodden without the city,(JERUSALEM) and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.(200 MILES) (THE SIZE OF ISRAEL)

ISAIAH 66:15-18
15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire,(NUKES) and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.
18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

ISAIAH 26:21
21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity:(GOD/ISRAEL HATE AND BRAKING OF HIS COMMANDMENTS) the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.(WW3,1/2 earths population die - 3 BILLION).

ISAIAH 13:6-13 KJV
6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

DR DOCTORION-ANGEL OF THE MIDEAST
"The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

FIRST ANGEL: ASIA
But the angel said: "Millions will die in China and in India. Nation will be against nation, brother against brother. Asians will fight each other. Nuclear weapons shall be used, killing millions."Twice I heard the words, "Catastrophic! Catastrophic!"Then the angel said, "Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world."I was trembling while the angel was speaking.
SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come."

Pakistan shoots down 25 Indian drones near military installations-By Muhammad DAUD with Parvaiz BUKHARI in Srinagar.

Rawalpindi, Pakistan (AFP) May 8, 2025-Pakistan's army said Thursday it shot down 25 Indian drones, a day after the worst violence between the nuclear-armed rivals in two decades.Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to retaliate after India launched deadly missile strikes on Wednesday morning, escalating days of gunfire along their border. At least 45 deaths were reported from both sides following Wednesday's violence, including children.Pakistan's military said in a statement Thursday that it had "so far shot down 25 Israeli-made Harop drones" at multiple location across the country."Last night, India showed another act of aggression by sending drones to multiple locations," Pakistan's military spokesman Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said from the army's headquarters in Rawalpindi, where a drone was downed."One managed to engage in a military target near Lahore," he said, adding that four troops in the city were injured. He earlier said the operation was ongoing. One civilian was killed and another injured in Sindh as a result of the drone incidents.Crowds gathered at crash sites, some close to army installations, to gaze at the debris.Blasts could be heard across Lahore. The Civil Aviation Authority said Karachi airport was closed until 6 pm (1300 GMT), while Islamabad and Lahore were briefly shut "for operational reasons".Pakistan and Indian have fought several wars over the Muslim-majority disputed region of Kashmir -- divided between the two but claimed in full by both."We will avenge each drop of the blood of these martyrs," Sharif said, in an address to the nation.- 'Right to respond' -Speaking after the Wednesday missile strike, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said New Delhi had a "right to respond" following an attack on tourists in Pahalgam in Kashmir last month, when gunmen killed 26 people, mainly Hindu men.New Delhi blamed the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba -- a UN-designated terrorist organisation for the Pahalgam shooting, and the nations traded days of threats and diplomatic measures.Pakistan has denied any involvement and called for an independent investigation into the April 22 attack.India said on Wednesday it had destroyed nine "terrorist camps" in Pakistan in "focused, measured and non-escalatory" strikes.Islamabad said Wednesday that 31 civilians were killed by Indian strikes and firing along the border.New Delhi said 13 civilians and a soldier had been killed by Pakistani fire.Pakistan's military also said five Indian jets had been downed across the border, but New Delhi has not responded to the claims. An Indian senior security source, who asked not to be named, said three of its fighter jets had crashed on home territory.- 'Screamed' -The largest Indian strike was on an Islamic seminary near the Punjabi city of Bahawalpur, killing 13 people according to the Pakistan military.Muhammad Riaz said he and his family had been made homeless after Indian strikes hit Muzaffarabad, the main city of Pakistan-administered Kashmir."There is no place to live," he said. "There is no space at the house of our relatives. We are very upset, we have nowhere to go."On the Indian side of the frontier on Wednesday, Madasar Choudhary, 29, described how his sister saw two children killed in Poonch, where Pakistan military carried out shelling."She saw two children running out of her neighbour's house and screamed for them to get back inside," Choudhary said, narrating her account because she was too shocked to speak."But shrapnel hit the children -- and they eventually died."- 'No pushover' -India on Thursday braced for Pakistan's threatened retaliation. In an editorial on Thursday, the Indian Express wrote "there is no reason to believe that the Pakistan Army has been chastened by the Indian airstrikes", adding that Indian military experts were "aware that Pakistan's armed forces are no pushover"."Border districts on high alert," The Hindu newspaper headline read, adding that "India must be prepared for escalatory action" by Pakistan.Diplomats and world leaders have pressured both countries to step back from the brink"I want to see them stop," US President Donald Trump said Wednesday.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is slated to meet his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Thursday in New Delhi, days after visiting Pakistan, as Tehran seeks to mediate.Analysts said they were fully expecting Pakistani military action to "save face" in a response to India."India's limited objectives are met," said Happymon Jacob, director of the New Delhi-based think tank Council for Strategic and Defence Research."Pakistan has a limited objective of ensuring that it carries out a retaliatory strike to save face domestically and internationally. So, that is likely to happen."Based on past conflicts, he believed it would "likely end in a few iterations of exchange of long-range gunfire or missiles into each other's territory".burs-pjm/ecl/lb

North Korea fires flurry of short-range ballistic missiles-By Claire LEE.

Seoul (AFP) May 8, 2025-North Korea fired multiple types of short-range ballistic missiles Thursday, South Korea's military said, around a week after leader Kim Jong Un tested a new weapons system for his latest warship.Seoul's military said it had "detected the launch of various types of short-range ballistic missiles," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles were "fired from the Wonsan area of North Korea into the East Sea between approximately 08:10 and 09:20 today (from 2310 GMT Wednesday)," they added, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan. The missiles flew up to about 800 kilometers before splashing down in waters to the east of the peninsula, the JCS said, adding it strongly condemned the North for a "clear act of provocation that poses a serious threat to peace and stability"."Our military, under the strong South Korea-US combined defense posture, is closely monitoring various North Korean activities to prevent any misjudgment (by the North)," it said in a statement. The launch, the nuclear-armed North's first missile test since March, came about a week after Kim oversaw the test-firing of a new warship weapons system.Pyongyang unveiled the 5,000-ton destroyer-class vessel named Choe Hyon last month.North Korea claims the vessel was equipped with the "most powerful weapons", and that it would "enter into operation early next year".Some analysts have said the ship could be equipped with short-range tactical nuclear missiles -- although North Korea has not proven it has the ability to miniaturise its nukes. The South Korean military has said the destroyer could have been developed with Russian help -- possibly in exchange for Pyongyang deploying thousands of troops to help Moscow fight Kyiv.Russia and North Korea also recently announced that they had started building the first road bridge linking the two neighbours.North Korea launched a flurry of ballistic missiles last year in violation of UN sanctions.Experts have long warned that the nuclear-armed North may be testing weapons for export to Russia for use against Ukraine. The launch also came as Russia prepared to hold World War II Victory Day commemorations, with world leaders including China's Xi Jinping expected to attend -- but not Pyongyang's Kim.A three-day truce in the conflict with Ukraine has been ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with the celebrations, although Kyiv has never agreed to it and has dismissed it as political theatre. The Thursday missile launch appears to "serve as a reminder of North Korea's contribution and stake in Russia's apparent efforts to commemorate Victory Day as a triumph over Ukraine," Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.- Testing, testing -Japan's defence ministry said there was no impact on Japan from the North Korean missiles, according to public broadcaster NHK.Kim earlier this week inspected shell manufacturing at munitions factories, with state media claiming the country's shell output had increased dramatically in recent months.Given the latest development, it is "entirely possible" that Thursday's missile launch "served as a test firing prior to potential export to Russia", North Korean studies scholar Ahn Chan-il told AFP.South Korea's military said in early March that the North fired "multiple unidentified ballistic missiles", the same day Seoul and Washington began a major annual joint military drill known as Freedom Shield.Pyongyang also carried out a test-launch of strategic cruise missiles in the Yellow Sea in late February, which it said showed off "counterattack capabilities".Washington -- Seoul's key security ally -- has in recent years ramped up joint military exercises and increased the presence of strategic US assets, such as an aircraft carrier and a nuclear-powered submarine, in the region to deter the North.Pyongyang has repeatedly declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear weapons state and routinely denounces joint US-South Korea drills as rehearsals for invasion. The two Koreas are technically still at war as the 1950-1953 conflict ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty. With relations souring, the North last year blew up roads and railways connecting it to the South and fortified areas of the border with more mines. In early April, South Korea's military said its troops fired warning shots when around 10 North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the heavily fortified border that divides the peninsula.

China vows to stand with Russia in face of 'hegemonic bullying'-by AFP Staff Writers.

Moscow (AFP) May 8, 2025-China's Xi Jinping was in Moscow on Thursday for a state visit ahead of the Kremlin's grand Victory Day celebrations, as Ukraine accused Russia's army of launching air strikes just hours into a supposed truce.More than 20 foreign leaders are in Russia to attend a vast military parade on Friday marking 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, taking place three years into Russia's offensive in Ukraine.Putin ordered troops into Ukraine in February 2022 and has marshalled the memory of Soviet victory against Nazi Germany to justify his campaign and rally society behind the offensive, which has killed tens of thousands of people. In a meeting in the Kremlin, Putin told Xi: "Together with our Chinese friends, we firmly stand on guard of historical truth, protect the memory of events of the war years and counter modern manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism."Russian society has seen unprecedented militarisation during the Ukraine conflict and the Kremlin has tightly controlled the memory of World War II.Putin claimed that his offensive against Ukraine is aimed at "de-Nazifying" the country, which Kyiv called "incomprehensible".Russia has captured swathes of Ukrainian territory and flattened cities and towns across the east with daily bombardments, forcing millions to flee their homes.Xi told Putin that Beijing stood alongside Russia in the face of "hegemonic bullying" -- a nod to the two countries' anti-US stance."In the face of the international counter-current of unilateralism and hegemonic bullying behaviour, China will work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities of major world powers," Xi said.Ahead of the meeting, Putin called Xi his "dear friend", while Xi referred to the Kremlin leader as his "old friend".- Truce -Putin has ordered his army to stop firing on Ukraine for three days to mark the May 9 celebrations -- an order that came into effect at midnight (2100 GMT Wednesday). But Ukraine, which dismissed the ceasefire as theatrics and never said it would abide by it, said Russia had broken its own order after just a few hours.Ukrainian authorities said Moscow launched an aerial bomb attack on the northeastern Sumy region overnight."During the night, the enemy intensified tactical aviation strikes using guided aerial bombs in the Sumy region," Kyiv's air force said. However, it said that as of 8:00 am, "no missile attacks or attack drones were recorded in Ukrainian airspace."Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky repeated his call for an unconditional 30-day full ceasefire -- a US proposal he previously accepted but that was rejected by Putin.Zelensky denounced Moscow's World War II commemorations as a "parade of cynicism" and renewed calls for support against Russia."Just as it did 80 years ago, when it finally became clear to everyone: evil cannot be appeased. It must be fought. Together. Resolutely. With force. With pressure," he said on social media.Ukrainian drone attacks have caused travel chaos across Russia this week, shutting dozens of airports and forcing hundreds of flights to be cancelled or rerouted.US President Donald Trump has sought to end Moscow's assault on Ukraine since his inauguration in January, but has failed to ease hostilities between the enemies. The White House has become increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress and Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday called on the two sides to enter direct talks.- Parade -The Kremlin was forced Wednesday to say it was taking "all necessary measures" to ensure the safety of world leaders in Russia for the parade. In the run-up to the event, Putin has railed against what he casts as a distortion of Russia's World War II history -- criticising what he sees in the West as an attempt to downplay the Soviet Union's contribution."The countless sacrifices made by both our peoples are worth remembering forever. The Soviet Union gave 27 million lives, laying them on the altar of the Fatherland and on the altar of victory," he told Xi.Trump has in recent days hailed the United States' contribution as the most decisive in the allies' 1945 victory over Nazi Germany.World War II is officially remembered in Russia as the "Great Patriotic War", beginning with Germany's surprise invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and ending with Germany's capitulation in 1945.The period between 1939 and 1941 -- when the Soviet Union had a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany and invaded Poland -- is glossed over in official history books.

Iran unveils new ballistic missile with 1,200 km range by AFP Staff Writers.

Tehran (AFP) May 4, 2025-Iran on Sunday unveiled a new solid-fuel ballistic missile with a range of 1,200 kilometres (745 miles), state television reported, at a time of rising tensions with the West."The solid propellant Ghassem Basir ballistic missile has a range of at least 1,200 kilometres and is Iran's latest defence achievement," the broadcaster said.Western nations have raised concerns about Tehran's missile capabilities, accusing it of destabilising the Middle East.Iran supports the "axis of resistance" network of militant groups opposed to Israel, including Yemen's Huthi rebels, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Shiite armed groups in Iraq.In October last year, Iran and its sworn enemy Israel attacked each other directly for the first time.Israel struck military sites in Iran in response to an Iranian missile attack on October 1, itself launched in retaliation for the killing of Iran-backed militant leaders and a Revolutionary Guards commander. On Sunday, Iranian state television broadcast footage of the new missile during an interview with Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh."If we are attacked and war is waged against us, we will respond with force and will target their interests and their bases," Nasirzadeh said."We hold no animosity towards neighbouring states, but American bases are our targets," he said. The new missile was shown after Tehran and Washington held Oman-mediated talks on Iran's nuclear programme on three consecutive Saturdays from April 12.They were the highest level contacts since the United States withdrew in 2018 from a landmark agreement with world powers on Iran's nuclear programme. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Fox News called on Iran to "walk away" from uranium enrichment, saying "the only countries in the world that enrich uranium are the ones that have nuclear weapons".On April 27, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a credible deal must "remove Iran's capacity to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons" and prevent the development of ballistic missiles.Tehran denies seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, insisting that its nuclear ambitions are entirely peaceful and for civilian purposes. It has ruled out discussions with Washington on its military and defence capabilities, including its ballistic missile programme.US President Donald Trump has threatened to attack Iran if diplomacy fails and has imposed additional sanctions targeting the country's oil sector.

Merz supports easing EU fiscal rules to boost defence spending by AFP Staff Writers.

Warsaw (AFP) May 7, 2025-Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday said that Berlin supports relaxing strict EU fiscal rules to let member states ramp up defence spending as he sought to establish his European credentials on his first foreign visits.Less than a day after scrambling to get enough votes in parliament to secure his job, Merz visited France and Poland in a high profile start to his term when he will have the threat of the Ukraine war, transatlantic tensions and domestic worries over the far-right to tackle. In Paris, Merz said that he and France's President Emmanuel Macron had "agreed a new start for Europe", though he gave few details. The 69-year-old Christian Democrats head turned his attention to the European Union's military spending in Poland, a key ally of Ukraine in its war with Russia.Speaking at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Merz pointed to recent changes to Germany's constitutional debt rules to largely exempt defence spending."We could imagine something similar for the European fiscal pact or fiscal rules," he said.- More bazookas -The continent has been looking to rearm following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and US President Donald Trump's changing stance on European security. In April, the European Commission said it would relax strict rules limiting public debt in order to allow states to spend up to 1.5 percent of national output on defence for four years.EU members are bound by spending rules obliging them to keep the public deficit below three percent of economic output and debt at 60 percent of GDP.But the EU can suspend the rules in exceptional circumstances and crises, as it did during the coronavirus pandemic when states had to prop up their embattled economies.Sixteen countries, including Germany, have said they want to make use of the exemption.Merz and his Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners pushed the change to Germany's constitution through the parliament earlier this year, enabling a "bazooka" of borrowing to upgrade Germany's defence and infrastructure.Merz also said it was important for the EU "to produce more" of its own military equipment and to harmonise weapons systems across member states."We must make sure the European members of NATO, and the whole European Union, are able to defend themselves on a long-term basis," he said.Tusk in turn praised what he called a "new opening" for the countries' relations that could be "the most important in the history of German-Polish relations in more than 10 years."Tusk said Europe's external frontiers had to be strengthened to defend internal travel. Merz's government, which has seen the far-right seize on fears over migration, controversially announced on Wednesday that border guards would be told to push back most asylum seekers.Tusk said it was "in the interest" of Germany and Poland to maintain "free passage" between their countries and that more attention should be "concentrated on the protection of the external borders" of the European Union. In a new sign of EU leaders' desire to strengthen their standing, the French and Polish leaders will on Friday sign a new friendship alliance that will include security cooperation.

France, Germany say to cooperate more closely on defence.

Paris (AFP) May 7, 2025 - French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed Wednesday to ramp up security cooperation in the face of Russian threats, as the new German leader visited Paris on his first trip abroad.Europe is seeking to bolster its defences amid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and doubts over US security commitments to Europe under President Donald Trump, though Merz insisted that any peace deal in Ukraine required an American commitment."We will set up a French-German defence and security council to meet regularly to bring operational responses to our common strategic challenges,' Macron said at their joint press conference.Merz, who became chancellor on Tuesday, is a committed European, transatlanticist and Ukraine supporter who has pledged to restore Germany's role on the world stage after half a year of paralysis."We will take joint measures to further enhance Europe's security and defence capabilities," Merz said, before heading to Poland later in the day.Berlin, like other European capitals, has been watching nervously as Trump seeks to push Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin into a quick agreement on ending the war, now in its fourth year.US-led mediation efforts have failed to stop the conflict, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio last month threatened to pull out of talks if there was not progress.Merz said the conflict in Ukraine could not end without the involvement of the United States."We cannot end this war in Ukraine without a continued involvement of the United States of America, this is not something that Europeans can substitute for," he said.- 'We need the Americans' -He said any ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine would also require US engagement.France and Britain have been spearheading discussions among a "coalition of the willing" of 30 countries on the potential deployment of troops to secure any ceasefire. But, Merz said, "at the same time we are aware that we will continue to need the Americans"."We want the Americans to remain onboard, and to meet their responsibilities within NATO and towards Ukraine," he said."President Trump has our full support when it comes to bringing about an end to the war," Merz added. He said European countries were ready to participate in any future monitoring of a ceasefire "under the leadership, and with the participation of, the United States".Merz also said he wanted to discuss nuclear "deterrence" on the European continent with France and Britain, Europe's only nuclear powers other than Russia."We will give our respective ministers the mandate to begin this discussion," Merz said, adding that any such arrangement would be "complementary to what we already have with our American partners within NATO".Macron said that strengthening "the European pillar of NATO" did not weaken the alliance."It is perfectly natural that all issues should be discussed, including nuclear deterrence, given our history and our specific characteristics," he said.- Putin 'finally serious?' -Macron also said he doubted Putin would respect a three-day truce in Ukraine that he ordered to start at midnight Wednesday, and wondered if the Russian leader was "serious" about a durable peace."Beyond the three days promised, which will undoubtedly not be respected, like the previous ones, is the Russian president finally serious?" Macron said."Will he finally decide to keep his word, especially the promises he made in his discussions with the US administration? That is what matters to us."Ukraine has dismissed the three-day ceasefire as a "game" designed to protect its World War II commemoration parade in Moscow rather than a genuine peace measure. The Kremlin was forced Wednesday to say it was taking "all necessary measures" to ensure the safety of foreign leaders set to attend its flagship May 9 parade after a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks closed airports across the country, disrupting hundreds of flights.Asked on Tuesday how Germany could seek to influence talks on a possible peace deal in the Ukraine war, Merz said there was a "proven format" of Berlin working with France and Britain.Merz said he would "consult intensively" with France and Britain, adding that "if we can include the Poles, then it will be even better".

Boris Pistorius, party soldier in charge of Germany's defence.

Berlin (AFP) May 6, 2025 - Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius -- who has led the push to make the military "ready for war" so it doesn't have to fight one -- was the only cabinet member to survive the new government taking office.Hailed as a straight-talking politician, the Social Democrat has earned the respect of troops and voters for his efforts to strengthen the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, and support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. That saved his seat at the cabinet table when conservative Friedrich Merz officially took over as chancellor Tuesday from Olaf Scholz of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD).The SPD -- staying on as a junior partner to Merz's CDU/CSU alliance -- decided that Pistorius would remain in charge of Germany's defence ministry, a job he has held for over two years.Pistorius, 65, now has at his disposal an unprecedented budget to make the armed forces battle-ready in the face of sabre-rattling from Moscow and an uncertain future for the transatlantic alliance. The new government intends to borrow hundreds of billions of euros to upgrade the military after years of underinvestment in the post-Cold War era which has drawn the ire of US President Donald Trump.Pistorius took the job in January 2023, as Berlin stepped up arms shipments to Ukraine, making Germany the country's second biggest military backer after the United States. In a job that has derailed many politicians before him, he quickly became Germany's most popular politician according to opinion polls, a position he has maintained ever since.Under Pistorius, Berlin also decided to deploy a German brigade to Lithuania by 2027 to help strengthen NATO's eastern flank.- 'Red general' -Born in the northern city of Osnabrueck on March 14, 1960, Pistorius completed his own compulsory military service in the early 1980s.He went on to study law and work as an attorney before entering politics in the 1990s.He became mayor of his hometown and later interior minister of Lower Saxony state, where he gained a reputation for his work in renewing the police force and boosting it to combat extremism. When Pistorius became defence minister, Der Spiegel news magazine nicknamed him the "red general" for the colour of the centre left Social Democrats party and his hard-charging style."Pistorius is considered impatient, occasionally comes across as brash and can sometimes barely conceal it when he is annoyed with others," public broadcaster NDR wrote of him.As Scholz's unwieldy three-party government engaged in open bickering last year over fiscal and economic policy, Pistorius stayed above the fray. After Scholz's government came crashing down in November, some voices within the SPD begged Pistorius to take the helm to try to turn around its dire poll ratings. But Pistorius refused to make a move for the party crown and played the loyal soldier, backing Scholz. As the SPD went down to its worst defeat in history, with around 16 percent of the vote, Pistorius is now the last man standing from the old ministerial lineup. He has two daughters and was widowed in 2015 when his wife died of cancer. He remarried in December 2023 to academic Julia Schwanholz.

Philippines slams 'high-risk' Chinese naval actions near contested reef-by AFP Staff Writers.

Manila (AFP) May 8, 2025-The Philippines criticised on Thursday a "high-risk" manoeuvre by a Chinese vessel near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in a rare incident involving warships from the two navies. The Scarborough Shoal -- a triangular chain of reefs and rocks in the contested South China Sea -- has been a flashpoint between the countries since China seized it from the Philippines in 2012.Monday's encounter took place "approximately 11.8 nautical miles southeast" of the Scarborough Shoal, the military said, during ongoing US-Philippine military exercises that Beijing has slammed as destabilising."The Chinese frigate BN 554 was documented tailing PS35 (BRP Emilio Jacinto) at close range, while BN 573 dangerously crossed its bow in a high-risk maneuver that created the danger of collision," the military said in a statement, labelling the incident "threatening and provocative".China in response accused Manila of sending a ship to "intrude" into its territorial waters. Its military said it had sent "naval and air forces to track, monitor, warn and drive away the Philippine boat in accordance with laws and regulations"."The relevant remarks of the Philippines side disregarded the facts, confused the public, and attempted to mislead international cognition," said Colonel Tian Junli, spokesperson of the Chinese military's Southern Theater Command.Philippines Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad told AFP the last such encounter between warships from the two navies he could remember was on a resupply mission in the South China Sea two years ago.Alexander Lopez of Manila's National Maritime Council said the Chinese vessel had been "dangerously close" to its Philippine counterpart. The ship crossing the bow of the BRP Emilio Jacinto had come within about 180 metres (590 feet), he told AFP, leaving "no room for any manoeuvre, for any emergency cases".The Chinese vessel following alongside had been less than 100 metres away, he said.China and the Philippines have engaged in months of confrontations in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims in nearly its entirety despite an international ruling its assertion has no merit.A Filipino sailor lost a thumb last June when Chinese coast guard members wielding knives, sticks and an axe foiled a Philippine Navy attempt to resupply its troops stationed on the Second Thomas Shoal. The joint US-Philippine exercises known as Balikatan, which this year were to simulate a "full-scale battle scenario", are set to end Friday.

Warship sinks before it can be sunk in US-Philippine drills.

Manila (AFP) May 5, 2025 - The BRP Miguel Malvar, old enough to have seen action in World War II, was scheduled to go out in a blaze of glory Monday, as a target ship during the annual US-Philippine "Balikatan" military exercises. The 80-year-old vessel, however, would not quite make its own funeral.Onlookers instead watched as the ship, which once chased Japanese submarines and ferried German prisoners as part of the US fleet, sank before the first volley could be fired."The Balikatan 25 maritime strike targets vessel sank off the west coast of the Philippines prior to the event commencing today," Philippine Navy spokesman John Percie Alcos said in cancelling a planned media event."Due to rough sea conditions ... and with its long service life... she took on a significant amount of water and eventually sank," he saidPraising it as one of the most-decorated ships in Philippine history, Alcos added the country was proud to be "transitioning to a new and multi-capable navy".After more than 20 years of service, the vessel -- then named USS Brattleboro -- was sold to the Republic of Vietnam in 1966.The Philippine Navy acquired and refurbished the ship after its crew fled Vietnam following the 1975 fall of Saigon.Balikatan, three weeks of US-Philippine joint exercises aimed at deterring Beijing's ambitions in the disputed South China Sea, is set to end Friday.

Second plane falls off US aircraft carrier in 10 days By W.G. DUNLOP.

Washington (AFP) May 7, 2025-A US warplane plummeted into the Red Sea when trying to land on the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, a defense official said Wednesday, the second jet lost from the ship in just over a week. The F/A-18F Super Hornet -- which cost about $67 million -- went overboard Tuesday due to a failure in the procedure for aircraft to catch a wire with a hook to help them stop after landing."The arrestment failed, causing the aircraft to go overboard," the defense official said."Both aviators safely ejected and were rescued," the official said, adding that they had minor injuries. It is the second F/A-18 operating off the Truman to be lost in recent days.On April 28, a similar F/A-18E fell off the carrier when the crew that was towing it in the hanger lost control of the plane. One sailor sustained a minor injury in that incident, which also saw a tow tractor lost overboard.Late last year, another F/A-18 operating off the Truman was lost after it was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg guided missile cruiser. Both pilots survived that incident. And in February, the Truman itself suffered damage when it collided with a merchant vessel in the Mediterranean Sea near Egypt's Port Said.- Yemen ceasefire -In addition to the lost warplanes and damage, a US official said last week that seven MQ-9 Reaper drones -- which cost around $30 million apiece -- had been lost in the Yemen area since March 15.The Truman is one of two US aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East, where US forces have been hammering Yemen's Huthi rebels with strikes since mid-March.The Iran-backed Huthis began attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in late 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, which has been devastated by the Israeli military following a shock Hamas attack in October of that year. The United States started targeting the Huthis in 2024 under Joe Biden, and President Donald Trump's administration on March 15 launched a new wave of near-daily strikes. On Tuesday, Trump said that the Huthis had agreed to stop their attacks and that Washington would in turn halt strikes on the rebels, which have left 300 people dead, according to an AFP tally of Huthi figures."They say they will not be blowing up ships anymore," the US president said, before mediator Oman said the two sides had agreed a ceasefire.

Russia, China slam Trump's plan for 'Iron Dome' missile shield.

Moscow, May 8 (AFP) May 08, 2025-Russia and China on Thursday slammed US President Donald Trump's plan for an Iron Dome-like missile defence system as "deeply destabilising", saying it risked turning space into a "battlefield".Trump ordered an "Iron Dome for America" shortly after his inauguration in January, a programme to counter ballistic and hypersonic missile threats. The plan revives parts of a controversial Reagan-era plan nicknamed "Star Wars" that would have placed missile interceptors in space."The recently announced large-scale 'Golden (Iron) Dome for America' programme is also deeply destabilising," Russia and China said in a statement published by the Kremlin after talks between presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping in Moscow. The plan "explicitly provides for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space", it added. The two countries said they would start talks on preventing the deployment of arms in space and would "counter policies and activities aimed at achieving military supremacy and formalising the use of space as a battlefield".Trump's proposal, which the US president has also called the "Golden Dome", refers to a highly successful system employed by Israel to down short-range rockets.Washington faces various missile threats from adversaries, but they differ significantly from the short-range weapons that Israel's Iron Dome is designed to counter.Russia, which commands the world's largest nuclear arsenal, last year unveiled a new hypersonic missile known as "Oreshnik", a weapon experts believe flies at 10 times the speed of sound.Beijing has been closing the gap with Washington when it comes to ballistic and hypersonic missile technology, according to the US National Defence Strategy released in 2022.Russia and the US have traded accusations of weaponising space in recent years.

At UN, US slams Russia for 'cynically' protecting N.Korea.

United Nations, United States, May 8 (AFP) May 08, 2025-The United States on Wednesday denounced Russia for "cynically obstructing" the monitoring of North Korea's compliance with UN sanctions, saying Moscow was trying to dodge criticism for using Pyongyang's weapons in its war with Ukraine.Several Security Council members, including the United States and South Korea, convened a meeting on the issue to heighten awareness of Moscow's potential sanctions-busting actions, the interim US envoy said."Today's briefing shows the Council will continue to ensure member states are aware of sanctions violations and evasion activity that generate revenue" for North Korea's "unlawful" weapons programs "despite Russia's veto," said the envoy, Dorothy Shea.In March 2024, by vetoing a Security Council resolution, Russia effectively ended the system in place to monitor Pyongyang's compliance with UN sanctions first implemented in 2006 and subsequently strengthened several times. The committee responsible for that monitoring no longer exists."The DPRK continues brazenly to violate the Council's resolutions by exporting coal and iron ore to China, the proceeds of which directly fund its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs," Shea said, using an acronym for North Korea's official name. The US envoy said that since September 2023, North Korea has transferred "over 24,000 containers of munitions and munitions-related material, and well over 100 ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine.""It is clear from evidence presented today that Russia is cynically obstructing the Council on DPRK sanctions implementation in order to try to escape reproach for its own violations."South Korean Ambassador Joonkook Hwang agreed, denouncing the "illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.""As Pyongyang's actions clearly and continuously defy the Council's decisions, the Council should consider strengthening existing sanctions, not weakening them," he said.In May 2022, Russia and China vetoed a resolution imposing new sanctions against Pyongyang, and have advocated for easing sanctions since 2019.The current sanctions on North Korea have no end date.

Amnesty says UAE supplying Sudan paramilitaries with Chinese weapons.

Port Sudan, May 8 (AFP) May 08, 2025-Chinese-made weapons supplied by the United Arab Emirates have been identified with Sudan's paramilitaries, Amnesty International said Thursday, as drone attacks prompted civilians to flee the army-held aid hub of Port Sudan. The Britain-based watchdog said that its research had detailed the use by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of sophisticated Chinese-made artillery and guided bombs in its war with the regular army, now in its third year.Abu Dhabi has repeatedly denied arming the RSF, despite reports from UN experts, US politicians and international organisations.Amnesty said its research was based on weapons used by the RSF in operations in the western region Darfur and during its loss of the capital Khartoum in March. It did not say anything about the long-range drones used by the paramilitaries to attack army-controlled cities in the east and south in recent days."Sophisticated Chinese weaponry, re-exported by the United Arab Emirates, has been captured in Khartoum, as well as used in Darfur in a blatant breach of the existing UN arms embargo," Amnesty said.It said it identified "Chinese GB50A guided bombs and 155mm AH-4 howitzers" through analysis of video footage and photos of RSF attacks. It said "the only country in the world that has imported AH-4 howitzers from China is the UAE" in a 2019 deal, relying on data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.- Long-range drone strikes -Amnesty's report came as the RSF pressed its long-range drone attacks on army-held cities. On Thursday morning, drones targeted the country's main naval base just north of Port Sudan, seat of the army-backed government, as well as fuel depots in the southern city of Kosti, two sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.Later in the day, anti-aircraft fire also intercepted three drones that targeted the city of Tendelti, 92 kilometres to Kosti's west, a military source told AFP."The militia launched another drone attack on the Flamingo Naval Base north of Port Sudan," one source told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to the RSF.He said air defences had shot down 15 drones overnight.Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast had been regarded as a safe haven, hosting United Nations offices and hundreds of thousands of displaced people, until drone strikes blamed on the RSF began on Sunday. The port city is the main entry point for humanitarian aid into hunger-stricken Sudan, and UN chief Antonio Guterres warned the attacks "threaten to increase humanitarian needs and further complicate aid operations", his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.More than two years of war have killed tens of thousands of people and uprooted 13 million, according to UN figures. On Tuesday, the army-backed government severed ties with the UAE, accusing it of supplying the RSF with the advanced weapons systems it has used to strike Port Sudan. The UAE denied the allegation, adding that the internationally recognised administration "does not represent the legitimate government of Sudan".In response, the Sudanese army-aligned foreign ministry on Thursday called the UAE's reaction "pathetic and ridiculous".The ministry said it showed "strange disregard" for international laws and norms governing relations between states.- 'No choice but to leave' -Since losing nearly all of greater Khartoum to the army in March, the RSF has ramped up their use of long-range drones. The strikes on Port Sudan have hit key facilities including the country's last functioning international airport, its largest working fuel depot and the city's main power station. At Port Sudan's bustling main bus station, civilians were scrambling to leave."You can't get a ticket without booking over a day in advance now, all the buses are booked," said bus company employee Mahmoud Hussein.Among those fleeing was Haidar Ibrahim, preparing to travel south with his family."The smoke is everywhere and my wife suffers from asthma," he told AFP. "We have no choice but to leave."Many of those who had sought refuge in Port Sudan have been displaced multiple times. The war has effectively split the country in two, with the army holding the north, east and centre, and the RSF in control of most of Darfur and parts of the south.

Lebanon state media say series of Israeli strikes hit south.

Beirut, Lebanon, May 8 (AFP) May 08, 2025-Lebanese official media said Israel conducted heavy air strikes on the south on Thursday, the latest raids despite a fragile November ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The state-run National News Agency (NNA) said "Israeli warplanes carried out a wide-scale aerial aggression on the Nabatiyeh region, launching a series of heavy raids in two waves" targeting hills and valleys in the area, located around 12 kilometres (seven miles) from the border. It said "huge explosions... echoed in most areas of Nabatiyeh and the south", causing "terror and panic" among residents, who rushed to pick up their children from school, as ambulances headed to the targeted areas. An AFP photographer saw smoke rising from hills in the region."We heard a loud strike, about 10 consecutive blows," said Jamal Sabbagh, a 29-year-old doctor who was giving schoolchildren health checks near the city of Nabatiyeh."Some of the children were scared and there was panic, the teachers were also frightened," he told AFP.The raids come a day after an Israeli strike killed a commander from Palestinian militant group Hamas in the southern city of Sidon.Israel has continued to launch regular strikes in Lebanon despite the November 27 truce which sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah including two months of full-blown war.Under the deal, Hezbollah was to pull back its fighters north of Lebanon's Litani River, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure to its south.Israel was to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon, but it has kept troops in five areas that it deems "strategic".Hezbollah, long a dominant force in Lebanon, was weakened in its latest war with its arch-foe, which also saw an Israeli ground incursion and a slew of the group's senior commanders killed, including longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.Lebanon says it has respected its ceasefire commitments and has called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its attacks and withdraw all its troops.Lebanese authorities have vowed to implement a state monopoly on bearing arms, though President Joseph Aoun has said disarming Hezbollah is a "delicate" matter that requires dialogue. The November truce was based on a UN Security Council resolution that says Lebanese troops and United Nations peacekeepers should be the only forces in south Lebanon, and calls for the disarmament of all non-state groups.

IDF kills Hamas's rocket production commander in the Gaza Strip-Jumaa was killed in the Deir el-Balah area in central Gaza, and was central in the terrorist organization's production of rockets.By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 8, 2025 17:40

The IDF killed Nasr Sobhi Ibrahim Jumaa on Wednesday, who was a commander in Hamas's rocket production headquarters, the military announced on Thursday.Jumaa was killed in the Deir el-Balah area in central Gaza, and was central in the terrorist organization's rockets production, the IDF added. The Israeli military stressed that steps were taken to minimize any and all harm to Gazan civilians in the vicinity, which were done with aerial surveillance, IDF intelligence, and munitions. The military also said that 150 terror targets in the Gaza Strip were targeted in the past three days, which included Hamas terror cells and their underground infrastructures.Prior to Jumaa's death, an IAF aircraft killed several Hamas terrorists who tried planting an explosive device that would have targeted IDF soldiers, the military statement added. The aircraft also struck a weapons depot where several Hamas operatives were located and had fired on Israeli forces in the vicinity.IDF continues strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon-The IDF also struck Hezbollah terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including a network of tunnels, on Thursday. The IDF struck Hezbollah terrorists, weapons, and tunnel shafts, which were part of a significant underground project that, due to IDF strikes, has been rendered inoperable. The military said that these sites are in direct violation of the understanding between Lebanon and Israel.

Two wars for a promise of peace: The JCFA battle to ensure a brighter future for the Middle East-"We have to move from explaining and defending to exposing and attacking," says Dan Diker, JCFA president-By RONNIE ROSENMAN, IN COLLABORATION WITH JCFA-MAY 8, 2025 17:09

As Israel enters into what could be the most complex stage of its conflict with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran and its regional allies, Dan Diker, president of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, warns that Israel is engaged not merely in military actions but in a "ght for its very existence.According to Diker, Israel stands at a critical juncture that pertains not only to its regional diplomacy but also to what he refers to as a global battle for influence that will shape the trajectory of Israel’s future and that of Western civilization. In a recent interview, Diker noted that his “do tank” is dedicated to “bolstering Israel’s security by spearheading its diplomatic efforts and linking Middle Eastern partners and allies with allies in the West.” Following the Abraham Accords in 2020, Diker notes that the center has acted as a “bridge between the Arab Muslim majority Middle East and the West” by cultivating discreet connections with Arab nations that “seek a safe space in Israel, beyond governmental constraints, to exchange ideas, formulate strategies, express themselves openly, and consult with us.“Our role is to present Israel con"dently as an indigenous member of the region who understands Arabic language and political culture and at the same time, [draws on] strong American political, cultural, and diplomatic expertise,”he explains.“It is extraordinary to watch what happens when Israel presents itself in Arabic as it truly is, which is a Middle Eastern country.” That Middle Eastern identity, he argues, counters “the false, propagandistic, subversive, decades-long narrative” portraying Israel as a Western colonialist implant. “No, we’re the most indigenous member of the Arab Muslim Middle East today,” Diker says. “And they are beginning to not only understand it but accept it – and embrace it.”HOWEVER, ALONGSIDE growing ties with the region, Diker believes that Israel faces a grave challenge from global campaigns to delegitimize the Jewish state and the Jewish people – a campaign he calls “the war of October 8.” “There are seven fronts,” he explains: “Hamas in Gaza and Judea and Samaria; Hezbollah in Lebanon; the Houthis in Yemen; Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq; and the Iranian regime itself. Add to that an eighth front – the political psychological, diplomatic, and legal warfare being waged against Israel in the West.”That eighth front, Diker says, is no less dangerous than the rockets flying out of Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen. In a deeply polarized media environment in the West, he warns that Israel is losing the battle for public opinion, especially among younger Americans, who have grown up “without a historical understanding ofthe Jewish state’s struggle for survival.”“These are essentially two wars taking place simultaneously,” JCFA’s president explains. “The military waron the ground… and we are making great progress… However, the military war is connected to another war: the war of perception or the war of strategic influence. We are also winning that war in the Middle East – but we’re losing that war in the free world.”FOR DIKER, this isn’t just about Israel: It’s a broader civilizational battle. “When you see thousands of students on hundreds of university campuses in kefiyas… this is a reinvigoration, and even a reincarnation of Che Guevara and the revolution of the Marxist, Leninist moment,” he says. “It’s not only about the Jews: It’s about America and the West. It’s about destroying and remaking America in the image of the Communist Party – and even using Nazi ideology, which is what also underpins Islamist Hamas.”To win this war of Influence, Diker calls for a strategic overhaul of Israel’s public diplomacy. “We have to move from what we know as hasbara and defending to exposing and attacking” he asserts. “We need to be exposing and calling out Hamas, the PLO, PA, Hezbollah, and Iranian enemies every moment of every day… This is high-intensity cognitive warfare.”Citing Arab political historian and political theorist Ibn Khaldun, the center’s president invokes theconcept of al-faris al-Asil – “the strong horse” – as the key to influence in the Middle East. “Israel todayis perceived as a strong horse in the Middle East,” he says.“But to be the strong horse… does not mean we’re winning the larger war for strategic influence in the West.” Diker voices significant concern over hostile narratives rooted in extremist ideologies from the Middle East that have infiltrated and co-opted the messaging of various Western institutions, including some Jewish organizations. “There are Jewish groups that have been refashioned as ‘useful idiots’ by these extremist ideologs,” he states.“These groups are working in the name of what they call human rights, actually adopting the PLO and Hamas line of propaganda to undermine and uproot Israel in the international community,” he further emphasizes. Diker believes that this troubling alignment with anti-Israel rhetoric not only distorts the facts on the ground but also legitimizes a campaign of delegitimization against the Jewish state and the Jewish people in global forums. He specifically mentions groups like IfNotNow and J Street, accusing them of fostering a distorted moral discourse that ultimately damages young Jews’ comprehension of Israel’s complex security situation and it’s historical and legal rights.“These groups,” he remarks, “have done a great disservice to young Jews by obsessively condemning Israel… in ways that are divorced from fact and inconsistent with Israel’s own strict adherence to international law.” By consistently defaming Israel while ignoring or justifying the extremism and even genocidal violence of its adversaries, Diker argues that such organizations aid those who are intent on Israel’s annihilation.ON A broader scale, Diker warns that the decline and even self-destruction of moral clarity in the West threatens not just Israel but also Jews in the Diaspora. “The enemies of Israel regard anyone who is sympathetic to or associated with Israel as an enemy, unless they disown Israel,” he remarks, “and this is a significant trap.”He adds that Jews abroad may increasingly face antisemitic hostility, regardless of their political views, simply because of their connection to Israel. To combat this trend, the JCFA leader calls for a united front among Israel’s allies – both Jewish and non-Jewish – who are committed to truth, justice, and democratic values.“We and the West must uphold moral clarity for the West,” he insists. “We need to overcome this challenge, for our future and for the future of Western civilization.” “Unite for freedom and liberty,” Diker concludes: “Unite for moral clarity to overcome the forces of evil. This is a struggle between good and evil; this is a battle between civilization and barbarism.”For Diker, the stakes are not merely national but civilizational; only through unity and moral courage, he stresses, can the free world resist the tide of radicalism and emerge stronger, more secure, proud, and prosperous. “That’s a monumental challenge worth  fighting to win,” he says. This article was written in collaboration with JCFA.

UN, international aid orgs push back against Israel's new Gaza aid plan - exclusive-Israel's new aid system for the Gaza Strip would allow direct delivery to families, but Western diplomats told The Jerusalem Post that aid organizations have some non-starters.By AMICHAI STEIN-MAY 8, 2025 16:00

Some international aid organizations have sent a clear message to Israel: they will not cooperate with the new humanitarian aid plan unless several changes are made. This was reported to The Jerusalem Post by two Western diplomats familiar with the details of the discussions. This week, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved a new plan for distributing humanitarian aid when it is determined that the aid stockpiled in the Gaza Strip over the past few months has run out. Under the new plan, aid will be distributed directly to families at centers located in the southern part of the Gaza Strip in areas fully controlled by the IDF. This marks a shift from the previous method in which aid was delivered by trucks entering various areas of Gaza, a system that allowed Hamas to loot the supplies. The same organizations that previously delivered aid to Gaza are expected to supply the incoming food. However, two Western diplomats told the Post that some of these organizations would not cooperate with the initiative if Israel implemented a list that restricted certain individuals from receiving aid. The new system aims to deliver the aid directly to families.A Western diplomat familiar with the discussions told the Post that the aid organizations were not necessarily against the distribution system Israel had proposed. "It’s not necessarily that the organizations oppose a new distribution model, as Israel proposes, but they are not willing to accept a system in which the IDF and the Israeli security apparatus decide who receives aid and who doesn’t."The Israeli concept behind the aid distribution list is that "It will establish an area in southern Gaza with aid centers and only allow those who are not Hamas members or identified with Hamas to enter."But the organizations say that anyone not in this area—either because they didn’t pass the IDF’s screening at checkpoints to reach the southern zone or chose to remain in northern/central Gaza—will not receive aid. "This is unacceptable", the organizations say.Even one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, World Central Kitchen, which previously operated in Gaza, has made it clear that it will refuse to cooperate with the plan, according to another Western diplomat. The Post reported on Wednesday that Israel and the US held meetings with UN representatives in an attempt to persuade them to join the framework. Officials from COGAT (Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories) have recently met with UN representatives. On Wednesday, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff briefed the UN Security Council on the issue.According to a source familiar with the matter, the US even threatened to cut its UN funding if the organization refused to cooperate with the new plan."This is not a matter of funding," a senior UN official told the Post. "We will not participate in a humanitarian aid distribution system that violates our core principles."

At least 21 hostages alive, authorities concerned about status of three add'l hostages, source says-All relevant information in the possession of the IDF’s Missing Persons Unit is passed on to the hostage's family by an intelligence officer.By AMICHAI STEIN, JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 8, 2025 14:09

At least 21 hostages are alive, and three more are considered living although there are serious concerns for their lives, an Israeli source familiar with the details told The Jerusalem Post Thursday.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday shared the same figures in a video shared on the prime minister's official social media. The previous day, US President Donald Trump said that three hostages had died in captivity. “They said that only 24 are living, and I now correct... I say 21 because as of today, it’s 21. Three have died. So this, this is a terrible situation,” Trump told reporters at a press conference. The three include one Israeli and two foreign nationals. There have been no signs of life from them since shortly after October 7. Their families have been updated on the situation since then.Hamas is holding 59 hostages. Thirty-five of them have been officially confirmed deceased. Thirty-two of them are Israelis, and three are foreign nationals.Contact with hostage families-The families of the hostages are continuously and thoroughly updated about the condition of their loved ones. All relevant information in the possession of the IDF’s Missing Persons Unit is passed on to the hostage's family by an intelligence officer who works regularly with the family.Hostage families are routinely invited to briefings by the Prisoners and Missing Persons Division, and military liaison officers and representatives from the Hostage, Missing and Returned Persons Directorate work with them in the civilian domain.Contact with the families of the foreign hostages is maintained continuously through the relevant embassies. Israel supports their families in the same way that Israeli hostage families are supported.

IDF strikes Hezbollah tunnel network in southern Lebanon-Lebanon and Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire in November, which halted the fighting and mandated that southern Lebanon be free of Hezbollah fighters and weapons.By JERUSALEM POST STAFF, REUTERS-MAY 8, 2025 11:46

The IDF struck Hezbollah terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including a network of tunnels, the IDF confirmed Thursday afternoon. The IDF struck Hezbollah terrorists, weapons, and tunnel shafts, which were part of a significant underground project that, due to IDF strikes, has been rendered inoperable. The military said that these sites are in direct violation of the understanding between Lebanon and Israel.Israel conducted 14 strikes in the Nabatieh area, two Lebanese security sources told Reuters, in one of Israel's most intense bombardments since a ceasefire brokered by the US in November. On Tuesday, the IDF said that Hezbollah's Bader Unit commander, terrorist Adnan Muhammad Sadiq Harb, was killed by an Israeli air force strike in the same area.As part of his role, he advanced the rehabilitation of Hezbollah's terrorist capabilities and assisted in efforts to rehabilitate terrorist infrastructure south of the Litani River. He also transferred weapons to different Hezbollah units across Lebanese territory. In April, Israel struck a southern Beirut building that it said it was being used to store precision missiles belonging to the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.Ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon-Lebanon and Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire in November, which halted the fighting and mandated that southern Lebanon be free of Hezbollah fighters and weapons.

Iran hails Houthi missile strike on Ben-Gurion Airport as major victory, expert says-According to Sabti, “In the past two days, Iranian media outlets have been saturated with this ‘success story.’By PELED ARBELI-MAY 8, 2025 10:33

Iranian media has hailed the recent Houthi missile strike on Ben-Gurion Airport as a major victory, according to Beni Sabti, a senior researcher in the Iran Program at the Institute for National Security Studies.“In the past two days since the Houthi missile struck Ben-Gurion Airport, the Iranians have been beside themselves,” Sabti said.“They are overjoyed and deeply satisfied with what they view as a major and meaningful success. From their perspective, this is a significant achievement — their proxy succeeded using their own missile and technology. It’s a tremendous victory in their eyes.”According to Sabti, “In the past two days, Iranian media outlets have been saturated with this ‘success story.’ "No one reported on the airstrikes in Yemen — and if they did, it was in just a few lines, without photos or color. They effectively erased everything Israel tried to showcase. They’re not broadcasting it because, from their point of view, the strike on the airport was such a significant success that it outweighs any bombing or suffering inflicted on the Houthis. "As we know, the Iranians prefer to fight using others’ blood, so they have no problem with the Houthis being attacked,” Sabti noted.Potential US-Yemen ceasefire-Beyond the military aspect, Sabti pointed to unexpected political gratification stemming from former US President Donald Trump’s remarks about a potential ceasefire in Yemen.“The second reason for their great joy is the positive messaging coming from President Trump — both toward them and regarding the Houthis,” he said. “His comments about a ceasefire caught Israel completely by surprise. Iranian commentators said Israel had been ‘thrown under the bus,’ which is very painful.”Sabti added: “Just as they once tried to use Trump to divide the US and Europe, now they see him as advocating for Iran against Israel. They believe he is restraining us, neutralizing us, and surprising us. In their view, Trump has become a tool in Iran’s hands.”He noted that while this dynamic may shift if Trump changes his tone or policy, Tehran is currently enjoying the momentum.Sabti warned of the broader psychological impact on the Iranian regime.“When the Iranians feel that everything is going their way, it empowers them in ways that transcend military capability,” he said. “It’s psychological, even spiritual. Senior officials begin to believe they can endure, that the danger has passed, and that the regime is no longer under threat. And that, for them, is the most important thing.”

Israel's Fire and Rescue Authority bans igniting fires in open areas for ten days-The Fire and Rescue Authority statement comes just over a week after the major fires that broke out at the Judean Hills.By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 8, 2025 11:40

The Fire and Rescue Authority issued an order banning the ignition of fires in open areas for ten days due to extreme weather, the authority said on Thursday."It is important to note that the weather in the coming days is expected to be hot and dry, with conditions that increase the likelihood of fires, especially in open areas, forests, and groves," the statement read. "No fires should be ignited in open areas, including technical work that creates sparks or open flames in open spaces, as well as the burning of plants and vegetation."Ban issued a week after the wildfires in JerusalemThe Fire and Rescue Authority statement comes just over a week after the major fires that broke out at the Judean Hills, which are thought to have burned through approximately 20,000 dunams and caused Highway 1 in Jerusalem to be closed to traffic.Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar made an appeal for international assistance from countries Greece, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, and Bulgaria.State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday,  emphasizing the urgent need to address shortcomings in Israel's firefighting system in preparation for emergencies. This request is particularly critical given the expected heatwave and the upcoming Lag BaOmer holiday next week.In his letter, Englman stated that during last week's fire, "we were on the brink of a disaster with dozens of casualties, which could have been more severe than the 2010 Carmel fire." He based this assessment on preliminary reports of the firefighting system's handling of the situation, which included the rescue of more than 100 vehicles and buses on Highway 1. Englman stressed that this "near disaster" should be analyzed and treated as if the disaster had already occurred.Eli Beer, president of the United Hatzalah emergency response organization, told The Media Line that he believes the major fires to be "a terror attack on Israel." Several individuals from east Jerusalem have been arrested by Israeli police on suspicion of attempting to ignite fires in the area.Last week's fires in Jerusalem have made the Israeli capital's air quality among the worst in the world, according to IQAir.A few days later, a fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the Modi'in forest, with five firefighting teams being called to the scene.Felice Freidson/The Media Line and Leah Schwartz/The Media Line contributed to this report.

IDF begins operating portable medical facility in Syria's South-The facility is part of several efforts taken by the IDF to support the Syrian-Druze population and maintain their security. By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 8, 2025 10:27

The IDF began operating a portable medical facility to treat Syrian Druze in Syria's South, the military said on Thursday. The facility is part of several efforts taken by the IDF to support the Syrian-Druze population and maintain their security. Syria's Druze have recently come under attack by the country's Islamists, leading to dozens of deaths and urgent calls for intervention.Israeli Druze have demonstrated in support of Israel playing a larger role in maintaining safety and security for the Druze population in Syria. Israel strikes Syria -In April, the IDF struck a Syrian extremist group that was planning to attack the Druze community in As-Suweida.“Israel will not allow harm to come to the Druze community in Syria, out of a deep commitment to our Druze brothers in Israel, who are tied by family and historical bonds to their Druze brothers in Syria,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said following the strike.

Benny Gantz: 'No need to renew settlement in Gaza,' settlements needed in West Bank-Gantz also added that "important settlements need to happen in the West Bank, in the North and the South.”By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 8, 2025 09:58

There is no need to renew settlements in Gaza, National Unity Party chairman Benny Gantz told Army Radio on Thursday. He added that "important settlements need to happen in the West Bank, in the North and the South.”On Tuesday, the party leader had voiced opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state, and added that anyone talking about such an idea is "disconnected from reality.""Israel cannot allow a direct and significant threat to its citizens on any border," he elaborated, and insisted that the IDF must retain security control and operational freedom in Gaza, the West Bank, southern Lebanon, and along the Syrian frontier.Gantz speaking on Israel's security and democratic values-Earlier this week, Gantz wrote on X/Twitter that any and all delays in deciding to form a probe into the events of the October 7 massacre threaten Israel’s security, which he said shortly after the government decided against launching a state commission of inquiry into the attacks.Last month, he had called on Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara to examine the necessity of putting The Jerusalem Post's editor-in-chief, Zvika Klein, under house arrest, and called on her to “thoroughly examine the necessity of the house arrest of the Post’s editor.. The potential harm to freedom of the press, which is a fundamental value in democracy, must be taken into account in decision-making.”

US discussing Gaza aid distribution with Arab countries, sources tell 'Post' - exclusive-According to the diplomats, it is still unclear which countries would join the project if it moves forward.By AMICHAI STEIN-MAY 8, 2025 09:06

The Trump administration has held talks in recent days with Arab countries to promote a humanitarian aid distribution project in the Gaza Strip, two Western diplomats told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.According to the diplomats, it is still unclear which countries would join the project if it moves forward.Israel, along with COGAT (Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories), has also held discussions on the matter with Arab states, according to the same sources. The talks between the administration and Arab countries also included the possibility of establishing a governance mechanism for the Strip, intended to manage civilian life in Gaza.On Wednesday, Israeli and Western diplomats told the Post that Israel and the US were trying to persuade the United Nations to participate in a new humanitarian aid distribution plan for Gaza that is currently being developed.New distribution plan-During a cabinet meeting this week, a new plan for distributing humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip was approved. The plan involves establishing distribution centers in specific areas that will be under the IDF’s control. Aid will be distributed directly to individual families, rather than through truck convoys as was previously done – a method that often resulted in the aid falling into the hands of Hamas.

Katz: What Israel did to Hezbollah, it will do to regime in Tehran-To the Iranian leadership that "funds, arms, and operates the Houthi terrorist organization: the era of proxies is over, and the axis of evil has collapsed."By JERUSALEM POST STAFF, REUTERS-MAY 8, 2025 07:14

What Israel did to Hezbollah in Beirut, it will do to the Iranian regime in Tehran, Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Thursday morning. "The Houthis will suffer heavy blows from Israel if they continue to fire at us," Katz added. He warned the "Iranian leadership that funds, arms, and operates the Houthi terrorist organization: the era of proxies is over, and the axis of evil has collapsed."You bear direct responsibility. What we did to Hezbollah in Beirut, to Hamas in Gaza, to Assad in Damascus, and to the Houthis in Yemen—we will do to you in Tehran."US bombing of Houthi targets in Yemen-US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the US would stop bombing the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, saying that the group had agreed to stop attacking US ships.A ceasefire deal between Yemen's Houthis and the US does not include sparing Israel, the Houthis said on Wednesday, later saying they targeted Israel with drones.

EZEKIEL 31:10-17
10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;
11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.
12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:
14To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.(HELL).
15Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.
16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
17They also went down into hell with him unto [them that be] slain with the sword; and [they that were] his arm, [that] dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
18To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword. This [is] Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

EZEKIEL 32:17-32
17 It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth [day] of the month, [that] the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, [even] her, and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit.
19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.
20 They shall fall in the midst of [them that are] slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.
21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
22 Asshur [is] there and all her company: his graves [are] about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:
23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
24 There [is] Elam (IRAN) and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves [are] round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of [them that be] slain.
26 There [is] Meshech, Tubal,(RUSSIA) (GERMANY, TURKEY) and all her multitude: her graves [are] round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
27And they shall not lie with the mighty [that are] fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with [them that are] slain with the sword.
29 There [is] Edom,(JORDAN) her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by [them that were] slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.
30 There [be] the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.
31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, [even] Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.
32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with [them that are] slain with the sword, [even] Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2  Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3  And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
4  And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5  Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6  Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7  Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8  After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9  Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
10  Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11  And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12  To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17  Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18  And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19  For in my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20  So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21  And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22  And I will plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS FLESH)
23  Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2  And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee,(300 MILIION RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS GET NUKED BY ISRAEL) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3  And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4  Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou,(RUSSIA) and all thy bands,(RUSSIA SUPPORTED WITH WEAPONS-ARAB/MUSLIM COUNTRIES) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5  Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6  And I will send a fire (ATOMIC BOMB) on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7  So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8  Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
9  And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
10  So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
11  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12  And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13  Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14  And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15  And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16  And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23  And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24  According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26  After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27  When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28  Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29  Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

G7 threatens new sanctions if Iran sends Russia ballistic missiles-by AFP Staff Writers-Washington (AFP) Mar 15, 2024

G7 countries warned Iran on Friday that they will impose "significant" new sanctions if Tehran transfers ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine."We reiterate our call on third parties to immediately cease providing material support to Russia's illegal and unjustifiable war of aggression against Ukraine or face severe costs," the group, which includes the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada, said in a statement."Were Iran to proceed with providing ballistic missiles or related technology to Russia, we are prepared to respond swiftly and in a coordinated manner including with new and significant measures against Iran," the countries said.US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced his concerns during a visit in Vienna on Friday."We've sent very clear messages to Iran not to do it... And I think that the concern about that eventuality -- and the commitment to address it if necessary -- is very real and very strong," he told reporters.A senior US administration official told journalists that if Iran decides to sell ballistic missiles to Russia, the costs will far outweigh the benefits, saying the "transfer hasn't happened, but there's a real danger that it could."Among the steps that have been discussed is ending national airline Iran Air's flights to Europe, the official added, declining to provide details on other response options. The G7 previously denounced support from China and Iran for Russia's war in Ukraine in a statement issued on the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the country by Moscow's forces. They called on Iran to stop helping Russia's military and expressed concern on the transfer by Chinese businesses of weapons components and military equipment to Moscow.Ukrainian forces have been hit by ammunition shortages as additional funding for military aid to Kyiv remains stalled in the US Congress.Moscow has turned to Tehran as well as Pyongyang to obtain arms for use in Ukraine, while Russia has also massively ramped up its domestic arms production.

Russia orders more firepower against Ukraine naval drones-by AFP Staff Writers

Moscow (AFP) Mar 17, 2024-Russia on Sunday ordered increased firepower and training for the navy to counter the threat of Ukrainian air and naval drones after a series of strikes on Russian warships."There must be training for personnel every day. Training on how to repel attacks from the air and by uncrewed boats," Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a statement during a visit to the Black Sea fleet in southern Russia.Shoigu "ordered the installation of additional firepower, large-calibre machine gun systems to defeat enemy drones," the defence ministry statement said. The Black Sea has been a vital battleground in the two-year conflict and Ukraine claims to have destroyed more than two dozen Russian ships.Moscow has moved many military vessels from its historic Sevastopol naval base in Crimea to the port of Novorossiysk further to the east, amid the spate of Ukrainian attacks.Ukrainian officials have talked up military success in the Black Sea at a time when their ground forces have often been forced back or on the defensive in eastern Ukraine.Ukraine's GUR military intelligence unit earlier this month released a video of what it said was an attack on the Sergei Kotov, a 94-metre (308-foot) Russian military patrol ship. The footage showed a naval drone approaching the side of the vessel, before a large explosion can be seen sending fire, smoke and debris into the sky.

NATO prepares for Russian threat in harsh Arctic-By Max DELANY

Badderen , Norway (AFP) Mar 11, 2024-Finnish conscript Atte Ohman readied himself aboard a US landing ship to storm a snow-swept Norwegian beach as part of a rapid response unit pushing out an invading enemy."There is a saying that 'if you want to keep the peace, you need to prepare for war'," the 19-year-old corporal told AFP, clutching his automatic rifle."That's what we're doing."The simulated assault on NATO's frigid Arctic fringe was part of its sprawling, four-month Steadfast Defender exercise -- the largest drills staged by the US-led military alliance since the Cold War.Swedish gunboats sped to shore, Italian paratroopers abseiled from helicopters, and French marines emerged on skis. The message was clear -- NATO is prepared to protect itself in the face of an increasingly aggressive Russia two years into the Kremlin's war on Ukraine.Last week the alliance got even larger as Sweden became its 32nd member almost a year after its Nordic neighbour Finland joined."We're signalling that we are ready to defend our territories and that's very important at the same time as strengthening our capabilities to operate together," Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson told AFP, after watching tanks from his country engage in a mock battle on the Norwegian-Finnish border."Right now the Russian ground forces are bogged down in Ukraine, but Russia has stated high ambitions to reconstitute itself and adapt its force posture."As Russia has begun turning the tide on outgunned Ukrainian troops, there have been warnings that Moscow could one day turn its sights on a member of the alliance. While the Kremlin's forces are depleted after heavy losses in Ukraine, Russia has switched its economy to war mode.Kyiv's western allies meanwhile have struggled to ramp up production of crucial weaponry, and support for Ukraine is wavering.Norway's defence chief Eirik Kristoffersen said the number of Russian forces stationed near his country is currently just one fifth of the number before Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine."But on the maritime side, on the air side, and on the nuclear side, they've kept their forces intact in our region," he told AFP."You have this uncertainty about for how long they will continue to lose so much versus Ukraine and then how long will it take for them to rebuild their military."- Arctic focus -One increasingly crucial area of competition with Russia is the harsh Arctic region where the exercise was staged.Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia has ramped up its capabilities in the region where melting ice due to global warming looks set to open up vital shipping routes and resources. Now with the membership of Sweden and Finland, seven of the eight Arctic countries are in NATO and the allies say they're increasingly pushing to compete with Moscow in this vital region. The Arctic is becoming hugely strategic and "that's why Russia is investing here a lot, and China is also watching this area," said Finland's defence minister Antti Hakkanen."The Artic is a new focus area. We must invest in the capabilities to act here in the normal military fields but also in the intelligence side and other fields," he added.Rear Admiral David Patchell, deputy commander of the US Second Fleet, said a conservative estimate was that climate would open up resources worth $1 trillion in the region. At the same time, melting ice would mean the Artic would link oceans around the globe for navigation."We have to know how to work in the Arctic," he told AFP."We're playing catch-up but I would say we're cognisant of Russia's priority, and they are placing a significant priority on the Arctic."Testing troops and hardware from across NATO in punishing Arctic conditions is a key focus of these exericises with the alliance's Nordic members sharing their expertise."It's a very big shock to come into working conditions like this. We rarely see snow like this on a daily basis," said US marine corporal Joshua Maddox, who deployed from the temperate climes of North Carolina in the southern United States."The biggest challenge is just the mental aspect -- just being very prepared."The Steadfast Defender drill -- which involves warships sent from the US in a sign of Washington's commitment -- comes after Donald Trump rattled the foundations of the alliance. The former president, the Republican challenger to Joe Biden in November elections, warned last month that he would encourage Russia to attack members not meeting financial commitments. But soldiers and commanders on the ground insisted they remained focused on helping allies with any threat."If Putin decides to get ballsy and go off and do worse things than he's doing right now, I'm going to be back out here fixing these for us, for other countries, helping them out," said marine sergeant Joshua Perezchoa, standing next to a HIMARS missile launcher."The mission comes first."

N. Korea fires ballistic missiles as Blinken visits Seoul-by AFP Staff Writers

Seoul (AFP) Mar 18, 2024-North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Monday in what analysts said was a calculated move to grab attention as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits South Korea for talks.Blinken is attending the third Summit for Democracy and met President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul early Monday. He is also meeting his South Korean counterpart on the sidelines of the event, for discussions now likely to be dominated by the allies' efforts to counter threats from the nuclear-armed North.Washington and Seoul wrapped up one of their major annual joint military training exercises last week, prompting angry retorts and live-fire drills from nuclear-armed Pyongyang, which condemns all such exercises as rehearsals for invasion.Seoul's military said it had detected the launch of "multiple short-range ballistic missiles" early Monday, which flew around 300 kilometres (186 miles) before coming down into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan."We are closely sharing relevant information with the US and Japan and are maintaining utmost readiness," the Joint Chiefs of Staff added. After meeting Yoon, Blinken "condemned the... launch of ballistic missiles by the DPRK and reaffirmed the United States' ironclad commitment to the ROK's security," Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, referring to North and South Korea by their official names.Japan's top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said the North had fired three short-range ballistic missiles, which landed outside of the country's EEZ and did not cause any damage. The launches come just days after Seoul and Washington's annual Freedom Shield drills, which this year involved double the number of troops, ended Thursday.Pyongyang this month warned that Seoul and Washington would pay a "dear price" over the drills, and later announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had guided an artillery unit it says was capable of striking the South Korean capital."It's a highly calculated move timing-wise by Pyongyang to fire multiple missiles to show they are capable of doing such an act even when the top US diplomat is in town," Professor Choi Gi-il of military studies at Sangji University told AFP.North Korea typically stages missile launches "as a tit-for-tat" after US-South Korea joint drills, Han Kwon-hee of Korea Association of Defence Industry Studies told AFP.Blinken's presence only adds to their motivation, he said, as it "means more attention from Washington and adds pressure on host Seoul."- Boosting deterrence -Monday's ballistic missile test is the North's second this year, after Pyongyang launched one tipped with a manoeuvrable hypersonic warhead on January 14.Blinken landed in South Korea on Sunday afternoon ahead of the democracy summit, which runs from March 18 to 20 and will bring together government officials, NGOs and civil society members.Seoul is one of Washington's key regional allies, and the United States has stationed about 27,000 American soldiers in the South to help protect it against the nuclear-armed North.Conservative President Yoon has boosted ties with Washington and sought to bury the historical hatchet with former colonial power Japan to better guard against Pyongyang's threats. So far this year, Pyongyang has declared South Korea its "principal enemy", jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over "even 0.001 mm" of territorial infringement."While South Korea conducted defence training last week alongside international partners, Kim Jong-un personally supervised several military exercises, and now while Seoul hosts a summit of democracies, North Korea fires more missiles," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul."The Kim regime's one-upmanship aims to show strength to its domestic audience, suggest costs on the Korean Peninsula for Seoul's international security cooperation, and warn Washington against increasing pressure on Pyongyang."Blinken also met South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul for discussions on boosting the alliance, as Washington and Seoul look to improve their so-called "extended deterrence" against North Korea. After Seoul, Blinken heads to the Philippines.

N. Korean leader unveils and 'drives' new battle tank-by AFP Staff Writers

Seoul (AFP) Mar 14, 2024-North Korea leader Kim Jong Un drove a "new-type main battle tank" while overseeing military training exercises, state media said Thursday, as Seoul and Washington wrap joint drills to improve deterrence.Wearing a black leather jacket, Kim saluted ranks of camouflage-uniformed troops, and watched live-fire "training march" exercises from a field command post, flanked by top generals, images published by state media showed. After he reviewed the tank crews, Kim "mounted a new-type main battle tank, seized the control lever and drove the tank himself", the official Korean Central News Agency reported. The KCNA report comes as Seoul and Washington hold the final day of their annual Freedom Shield exercises -- involving missile interception drills and air assault, among others. The nuclear-armed North has long condemned joint US-South Korea military drills, calling them rehearsals for an invasion. It has carried out weapons tests in the past as a response to previous joint exercises of this nature.Kim "expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the new-type main battle tank successfully demonstrated its very excellent striking power", the KCNA report said. The North Korean leader also stressed the "importance of the role and duty of tankmen in modern warfare", as well as the "need to organize intensive exercises simulating an actual war".Pyongyang last week warned that the South and the United States would pay a "dear price" over the Freedom Shield drills, and later announced that Kim had guided a large-scale artillery drill involving a unit that it said was capable of striking the South Korean capital. On Wednesday, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik visited the headquarters of the army's Special Warfare Command during the ongoing Washington-Seoul drills, which involved "mastering advanced combat skills".This included "clearing operations" inside North Korea's "key facilities" in case of an attack by Pyongyang."If Kim Jong Un wages war, you should become the world's strongest special warfare unit that quickly removes the enemy's leadership," Shin said during the visit. So far this year, the North has declared South Korea its "principal enemy", jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over "even 0.001 mm" of territorial infringement.

IDF says it destroyed part of one of longest Hamas tunnel networks in north Gaza-Military says underground network connects terrorists from north to south of Strip; soldier seriously injured Friday in fighting; PM vows Rafah op ‘will happen’
By Emanuel Fabian-and Agencies Today, 7:54 pm-MAR 17,24

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday that it recently destroyed what it says is part of one of the longest Hamas tunnel networks, which connects Hamas battalions and brigades in northern and southern Gaza.Combat engineers of the 162nd Division, along with the elite Yahalom unit, demolished around 2.5 kilometers (a little more than 1.5 miles) of the tunnel network in northern Gaza, according to the IDF.The IDF also said Sunday that troops of the Nahal Brigade had killed some 18 Hamas operatives in the central Gaza Strip over the past day.The gunmen were killed with sniper fire and by the troops calling in tank shelling and airstrikes. In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, the IDF said troops of the Givati Brigade spotted two Hamas operatives loading a motorbike with military gear and called in an airstrike. Another two gunmen approaching the troops were also killed in an airstrike, the military said.In Khan Younis, the 7th Armored Brigade killed several more Hamas operatives and seized weapons, the IDF said.In one incident, the IDF said the troops shelled a building from which anti-tank missiles were fired. The missile attack caused no injuries.A soldier from the 601st Battalion was seriously injured on Friday in fighting in the central Gaza Strip, the military stated. The soldier was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and his family was informed. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza on Sunday said that the bodies of 92 people killed in Israeli airstrikes were brought to hospitals in Gaza in the past 24 hours. Hospitals also received 130 wounded, it said. The numbers could not be independently verified. At least 11 people from the Thabet family, including five children and one woman, were killed in an airstrike in Deir el-Balah city in central Gaza, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society and an Associated Press journalist. The body of an infant lay among the dead.A Palestinian girl, Leen Thabit, retrieving a white dress from under the rubble of a flattened house, cried as she told AFP that her cousin had been killed in the strike.“She’s dead. Only her dress is left,” Thabit said. “What do they want from us?”The ongoing war has driven most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people from their homes. A quarter of Gaza’s population is starving, according to the UN.Humanitarian aid airdrops by the US and other nations continue, while deliveries on a new sea route have begun, but aid groups say more ground routes and fewer Israeli restrictions on them are needed to meet humanitarian needs in any significant way.Israel says there is no limit to the amount of aid that can enter the Strip and has blamed aid groups for failing to properly distribute supplies. In the face of growing international criticism of the military campaign, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reiterated his determination to attack Hamas in Rafah and said that his government approved military plans for such an operation.“We will operate in Rafah. This will take several weeks, and it will happen,” he told the weekly cabinet meeting.Netanyahu’s office said Friday that he had approved military operational plans for an offensive in the southern Gaza city.Israel has said Rafah, where four Hamas battalions are deployed, remains Hamas’s last major stronghold in the Strip after the IDF operated in the north and center of the Palestinian enclave. It has said an offensive there is necessary to achieve the war’s goals and is not a question of “if” but “when.”The international community has expressed concerns about the humanitarian costs of a planned assault on Rafah, where about 1.4 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering. Israel has promised to evacuate the civilian population before the ground incursion, but has not publicized the details of where they will be moved.War erupted when Hamas-led terrorists rampaged through southern communities on October 7, slaughtering some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 253 captives to Gaza, where more than half remain. The devastating onslaught and the resulting Israeli offensive — aimed at eliminating Hamas and returning the hostages — have sparked fears of a regional conflagration. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says 31,645 people in the Strip have been killed in the fighting so far, a figure that cannot be independently verified, and includes those killed by the terror groups’ failed rocket launches and some 13,000 Hamas terrorists Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 gunmen inside Israel on October 7.

PM blasts international community amid pressure over war: ‘Did you already forget Oct. 7?’By Lazar Berman-MAR 17,24

Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasts those “in the international community who are trying to stop the war now, before all its goals are achieved.”Netanyahu’s Hebrew-language comments are likely a reference to calls last week for elections in Israel from US Senator Chuck Schumer, and growing criticism from the Biden White House over Netanyahu’s conduct of the war.The prime minister says that those who wants to stop the war do so “by making false accusations against the IDF, against the Israeli government and against the prime minister of Israel. They do this by trying to bring about elections now, in the midst of the war.”Turning to Israel’s “friends in the international community,” Netanyahu asks pointedly: “Is your memory so short? Did you forget so quickly October 7, the most terrible massacre committed against Jews since the Holocaust? Are you so quickly ready to deny Israel the right to defend itself against the monsters of Hamas? Did you lose your moral conscience so quickly?”He calls for international pressure to be put on Hamas and Iran, rather than Israel.“No amount of international pressure will stop us from realizing all the goals of the war: eliminating Hamas, releasing all our hostages and ensuring that Gaza will no longer pose a threat against Israel,” insists Netanyahu.“We must not give in to these pressures, and we will not give in to them,” Netanyahu stresses. He also promises that the IDF will operate in Rafah, “carefully.”“It will take a few weeks, and it will happen,” he says.“Those who say that the operation in Rafah will not happen are the same ones who said that we will not enter Gaza, that we will not operate in Shifa, that we will not operate in Khan Younis and that we will not resume fighting after the [weeklong November] ceasefire,” Netanyahu says.

IDF says fighter jets hit Hezbollah targets in four areas of south Lebanon-By Emanuel Fabian-MAR 17,24

The IDF says fighter jets carried out strikes on Hezbollah sites in four different areas of southern Lebanon. The targets included infrastructure and an observation post in Aitaroun, a building used by the terror group in Aalma ash-Shab, and observation posts in Ayta ash-Shab and Marwahin, according to the IDF.The IDF releases footage showing the strikes.

PM to German chancellor: If Hamas remains in Gaza it’ll ‘regroup and reconquer’German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, left, shakes hands with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a press conference in Jerusalem, March 17, 2024. (GPO)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Jerusalem, in which he says the two leaders had a”very serious conversation, an important conversation among friends.”“We also agreed that Hamas has to be eliminated,” Netanyahu says, noting that if the terror group is allowed to stay in Gaza it will “regroup and reconquer and, as they vowed, repeat the [October 7] massacre again and again and again.”During the meeting, Netanyahu says his German counterpart asked him to do more to protect civilians in Gaza amid the ongoing war and to allow more humanitarian aid for Palestinians enter the Strip.Netanyahu notes Israel’s efforts to protect civilians while Hamas uses them as human shields, as well as the challenges of distributing aid within the Strip amid urban warfare. On his third trip to Israel since war erupted with Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, the German chancellor says the hostages held by terror groups for over 160 days are in his country’s “thoughts and prayers.”“In these dark hours my country stands with the people of Israel. From day one our message has been clear,” he says, stressing Israel’s right to self defense. “By fighting Hamas terrorists Israel is fighting a legitimate goal.”However, he says that the Palestinian death toll is “extremely high, many would argue, much too high.”War erupted in Gaza after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel killing some 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid horrific acts of brutality and sexual assault.

French daily Le Figaro reports that former Balad MK Azmi Bishara played a role in talks between the US, Qatar, Israel and Hamas in Paris in February to build an outline for a potential hostage deal with Hamas.A source quoted by the French paper says Bishara “strongly influenced the drafting” of the outline, which would see a temporary pause in fighting in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas since October 7 in exchange for the release of Palestinian security prisoners and provisions for the entry of humanitarian aid to the Strip. The report adds that Bishara serves as an adviser to Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.Once a Knesset black sheep over his pro-Palestinian stance, Bishara left Israel in 2007, accused of spying for Hezbollah, a charge he denied. He is now a major personality in Qatari media and has a following of more than 1.7 million on social media platform X.The Paris proposal is still in the midst of negotiations, with Israel expected to send a delegation to Qatar tomorrow.Agencies contributed to this report.

US schools becoming more supportive of Muslim students fasting during Ramadan-In Dearborn, Michigan, where half of population is Arab, fasting students are accommodated with separate activities during lunchtime-By AP and ToI Staff Today, 9:50 am-MAR 17,24

While Muslim students remain a rarity in many US school districts, they are a major presence in some communities, prompting public schools to be more attentive to their needs during the holy month of Ramadan when dawn-to-sundown fasting is a duty of Islam. For example, in Dearborn, Michigan — where nearly half the 110,000 residents are of Arab descent — public school teachers and staff strive to make things easier for students observing Ramadan.“We allow students on their own to practice their faith as long as it’s not a disruption to the school day,” said Dearborn Schools spokesperson David Mustonen. “We also try to find other spaces or activities in the school during lunch for those students who may be fasting.”But he stressed that these students are still required to complete all assignments. In St. Paul, Minnesota, East African Elementary Magnet School has set aside space in the library where students who are fasting and don’t want to be in the cafeteria can spend the break doing other supervised activities like reading, said principal Abdisalam Adam. The 220-student school opened last fall as part of St. Paul’s public schools system, and shares that curriculum, but it also aims to reinforce cultural and linguistic connections with Somalia and other East African countries. Adam said about 90 percent of the students are Somali Muslims.Adam, who has worked with the district for nearly 30 years, said he tells his staff that accommodating observance of Ramadan fits in with an overall goal of caring for students.“All needs are connected,” he said. For school districts less familiar with Muslim traditions, resources are available. For example, Islamic Networks Group, a California-based nonprofit, provides, among other things, online information for educators about Ramadan and its significance to Muslims. Many districts “don’t know very much about Islam or any of our holidays,” said Maha Elgenaidi, the group’s executive director. “If they don’t know very much about it, there’s not much they can provide to students in terms of accommodation” until they learn more and the parents are actively involved in asking for accommodations. She says fasting students may need to be excused from strenuous activities in gym class, and should be allowed to make up for tests missed due to absence to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday that follows Ramadan.“If they’re not accommodated at school or the school doesn’t know anything about this, they’re kind of living dual lives there.”Fasting is not required of young children, but many Muslim children like to fast to share in the month’s rituals and emulate parents and older siblings, according to ING. Educators also need to know of the typical changes to Muslim families’ routines during Ramadan, such as waking up for the pre-dawn “suhoor” meal and staying up late to possibly attend prayers in the mosque, Elgenaidi said. When Dr. Aifra Ahmed’s children were younger, the Pakistani American physician and her husband would share insight about Ramadan with their classmates, reading to them a Ramadan story and distributing goodie bags with such things as dates.“I realized that the Muslim families in school have to do a lot of education,” said Ahmed, who lives in Los Altos, California.Ahmed’s husband, Moazzam Chaudry, said goodwill gestures, such as when educators offer a Ramadan greeting, send a message of inclusivity. For immigrant families, “that’s the first thing that… naturally comes to your mind, ‘Are we integrated into this society? Does this society even accept us?’” he said. “These little, little things make such a huge impact.”Punhal, the couple’s daughter who attends a charter middle school, said she takes part in physical education during Ramadan but skips running when fasting because she would need water afterward. She said a few non-Muslim friends told her they would like to fast with her in companionship.Naiel, her brother who’s in a public high school, said he was pleased when a teacher talked to the class about Ramadan and told him that, if he needed, he could take a nap.He wants others to better understand why he fasts.“A lot of kids and teachers think… I’m torturing myself or like it’s a diet,” he said. “When I’m fasting, I just feel a lot more gratitude towards everyone around me and towards people who don’t have as much.”In Dearborn, 14-year-old Adam Alcodray praised the faculty at Dearborn High for their understanding during Ramadan.“A lot of the teachers are just like more lenient, allowing us to do less,” said Alcodray, a 9th grader. “They don’t get mad because they realize we are hungry.”Alcodray says he fasts from 6:20 a.m. until around 8 p.m.“It’s not that bad to be honest,” he said. “When you know you can’t eat, something in your brain clicks.”Hussein Mortada, a 17-year-old senior at Dearborn High, said family solidarity is invaluable during Ramadan.“In my family, everybody’s fasting,” Mortada said. “Everybody’s going through the same thing. The whole month is meant for you to get closer to God and make your religion stronger.”This year, Ramadan carries extra significance due to the hardships being suffered by people in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war, Mortada said.“I feel helpless just sitting here on my phone, looking at everything that’s happening,” he said. “All you can do is feel for them and pray for them.”Alcodray shared similar sentiments.“When you look at what the children are eating in Gaza, you appreciate what your mom makes,” he said. “When you’re having a bad day, realize what they are going through.”Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, over 31,000 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry. These numbers cannot be independently verified and do not differentiate between civilians and Hamas operatives. Israel says it has killed over 13,000 operatives since the beginning of the war.Much of Gaza’s population is believed to be at risk of starvation, according to the UN.The war broke out on October 7 when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, kidnapping 253 and committing widespread atrocities. At the East African magnet school in St. Paul, Marian Aden — who trains other teachers there — makes it a priority to encourage Ramadan-related accommodations for fasting students.Aden said her youngest daughter, 4-year-old Nora, woke up excited about Ramadan’s start on March 11 — but her teachers in the suburb where they live were not familiar with the occasion. Aden said she’ll be relieved when Nora starts attending the magnet school next year.“She’ll be celebrated for who she is,” Aden said.Minnesota has been home to growing numbers of refugees from war-torn Somalia since the late 1990s. Several school districts have recently made Eid a holiday. In Washington DC, Abdul Fouzi has two daughters, ages 8 and 12, who have gradually learned the meaning and rituals of Ramadan.Growing up in Sierra Leone in the 1980s, Fouzi said he was fasting for a full day as early as age 11. But he has not pushed his elder daughter to do likewise.“They’re still pretty young, so they’re not ready to go the whole day without food or water,” he said. “They’re not built like that.”Still, he wants them to get used to the idea; this year he’d like them to experiment with fasting for a half day.To Fouzi, more important than strict adherence to the rules at their age is their understanding of Ramadan’s meaning and the importance of praying for peace.“They make up their own little rules and find loopholes figuring out how they want to participate in and practice Ramadan in different ways, and I’m okay with that,” he said.

Analysis-Schumer’s rebuke of Netanyahu shows fragile line US walks on interference-US leaders, as well as American allies, are more frequently butting into the internal electoral politics of friends, and testing the waters-By AAMER MADHANI Today, 6:10 am-MAR 17,24

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans and Israeli officials were quick to express outrage after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza and called for Israel to hold new elections. They accused the Democratic leader of breaking the unwritten rule against interfering in a close ally’s electoral politics.Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell reacted to Schumer by saying it was “hypocritical for Americans who hyperventilate about interference in our own democracy to call for the removal of a democratically elected leader.”House Speaker Mike Johnson said Schumer’s call for new elections was “inappropriate.” Even Benny Gantz, a political rival of Netanyahu and member of Israel’s war cabinet, said Schumer’s remarks were “counterproductive.”Schumer’s stinging rebuke of Netanyahu — the senator said the Israeli leader had “lost his way” and was an obstacle to peace — was certainly provocative but it was hardly norm-breaking.US leaders, as well as American allies, are more frequently butting into electoral politics beyond the water’s edge.Look no further than the close and historically complicated relationship that American presidents and congressional leaders have negotiated with Israel leaders over the last 75 years.“It is an urban legend that we don’t intervene in Israeli politics and they don’t try to intervene in ours,” said Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who worked as a Middle East negotiator in Republican and Democratic administrations. “We do intercede and they do intercede in ours.”In 2019, with just weeks to go before Netanyahu faced a difficult election, President Donald Trump abruptly declared the US was recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, giving Netanyahu a political boost just when he badly needed it.In 2015, Republican House Speaker John Boehner invited Netanyahu to deliver an address to Congress during sensitive negotiations about Iran’s nuclear program and shortly before a national election in Israel.Boehner did not coordinate the invitation with President Barack Obama’s administration. Obama declined to invite Netanyahu to the White House during the visit, with White House officials saying that holding such a visit so close to Israel’s election would be inappropriate. The standard Obama set for a White House visit wasn’t one Bill Clinton subscribed to years earlier. In April 1996, Clinton invited Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres to the White House to sign a $100 million counter-terrorism accord shortly before an Israeli election. Years later, Clinton acknowledged in an interview that he was trying to give Peres a boost with voters. It didn’t work; Peres lost to Netanyahu. In practice, keeping out of allies’ elections has been more of a professed American value than enshrined protocol.US leaders have frequently demonstrated a “varsity versus junior varsity” approach to how overtly they noodle in the internal politics of friends, says Edward Frantz, a University of Indianapolis historian. The bigger the ally’s economy, the less likely American leaders are to meddle openly in its elections.“American politicians want to have it both ways,” Frantz said. “There are moments when American leaders want to and need to speak out and have their say. But there is reason to stay close to the lines on elections. You don’t want foreign governments to interfere in our own internal politics, either.”The lines have only become blurrier in recent years, and are being tested by how world leaders are approaching November’s Biden-Trump rematch. This past week, during a White House visit on the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession into NATO, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk didn’t obscure his desire to see Biden win another term.“I want you to know that your campaign four years ago was really inspirational for me and for so many Poles,” said Tusk, with conservative Polish President Andrzej Duda by his side. “And we were encouraged … after your victory. Thank you for your determination. It was something really important for — not only for the United States.”Tusk later singled out Johnson, the Republican House speaker, to blame for Washington’s deadlock on a spending bill with $60 billion in aid for Ukraine, which is running low on ammunition and arms in its war with Russia.“This is not some political skirmish that has significance only here, on the American political stage,” said Tusk.He told reporters that inaction by Johnson could “cost thousands of human lives in Ukraine.”Last week, Biden slammed Trump for hosting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has described a possible comeback by Trump as the “only serious chance” for an end to the war in Ukraine.Hungary, like the US, is a member of NATO. Orbán has become an icon to some conservative populists for championing “illiberal democracy,” replete with restrictions on immigration and LGBTQ+ rights.Biden during a recent campaign event noted that Trump was meeting Orbán, and said the Hungarian leader is “looking for dictatorship.” Hungary summoned the US ambassador to Budapest, David Pressman, to register displeasure with the president’s comments.White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the president stood by his comments.“Our position is that Hungary has engaged in an assault on democratic institutions, and that remains a source of grave concern to us,” Sullivan said. The Schumer comments in the midst of Israel’s difficult five-month war against Hamas offer new strain to the US-Israel relationship. That relationship already has seen tensions between Biden and Netanyahu mount as the Palestinian death toll rises and innocent civilians suffer while the US and others struggle to get aid past Israel’s blockade and into Gaza. The war was triggered by Hamas’s October 7 killing spree across southern Israel, when terrorists killed some 1,200 people and took 253 hostage in Gaza.National elections are set for 2026 in Israel though they could well come earlier.Biden, in a brief exchange with reporters on Friday, said he thought Schumer had delivered “a good speech.” The president and White House officials, however, stopped short of endorsing Schumer’s call for elections. There have been other moments of deep tension in the US-Israeli relationship.President Dwight Eisenhower pressured Israel with the threat of sanctions into withdrawing from the Sinai in 1957 in the midst of the Suez Crisis. Ronald Reagan delayed the delivery of F16 fighter jets to Israel at a time of escalating violence in the Middle East. President George HW Bush held up $10 billion in loan guarantees to force the cessation of Israeli settlement activity in the occupied territories. But the press by Schumer for new elections ventures into uncharted territory.“All of those other crises were sort of one-offs,” Miller said. “They were efforts to move Israel in a focused, discrete way on a specific issue. What you have now after years of Netanyahu’s premierships is a fundamental crisis of confidence, which cuts to the core of the US-Israel relationship.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Trump warns of ‘bloodbath’ if he is not elected-Unclear what Republican nominee means with comments; Biden administration says former president doubling down on threats of political violence-By AFP Today, 10:36 am-MAR 17,24

VANDALIA, Ohio – Donald Trump told a rally in Ohio on Saturday that November’s presidential election will be the “most important date” in US history, painting his campaign for the White House as a turning point for the country.Days after securing his position as the presumptive Republican nominee, the former president also warned of a “bloodbath” if he is not elected – though it was not clear what he was referring to, with the remark coming in the middle of comments about threats to the US auto industry.“The date – remember this, November 5 – I believe it’s going to be the most important date in the history of our country,” the 77-year-old told rally-goers in Vandalia, Ohio, repeating well-worn criticisms that his rival, President Joe Biden, is the “worst” president.Criticizing what he said were Chinese plans to build cars in Mexico and sell them to Americans, he stated: “We’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.”“Now if I don’t get elected it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s going to be the least of it, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars.”As Trump’s comment gained traction on social media, Biden’s campaign released a statement calling the Republican a “loser” at the ballot box in 2020 who then “doubles down on his threats of political violence.”“He wants another January 6 but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence and his thirst for revenge,” the campaign said, referring to the deadly attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters in 2021.Later, Biden spoke at a dinner in Washington, where he also warned of “an unprecedented moment in history.”“Freedom is under assault… The lies about the 2020 election, the plot to overturn it, to embrace the January 6 insurrection pose the greatest threat to our democracy since the American Civil War,” he said.“In 2020, they failed, but… the threat remains.”The 81-year-old, who has waved off concerns that he is too old for a second term, leavened his rhetoric with humor.“One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president,” he said of the presidential race. “The other guy’s me.”Border issues-Earlier this month Trump and Biden each won enough delegates to clinch their party nominations in the 2024 presidential race, all but assuring a rematch and setting up one of the longest election campaigns in US history.Among the issues Trump is campaigning on is sweeping reform of what he calls Biden’s “horror show” immigration policies, despite the ex-president successfully pressuring Republicans to block a bill in Congress that included the toughest border security measures in decades. On Saturday, he invoked the border again as he reached out to minorities who have traditionally voted Democrat. He said Biden had “repeatedly stabbed African-American voters in the back” by granting work permits to “millions” of immigrants, warning that they and Hispanic Americans “are going to be the ones that suffer the most.”For decades Ohio had been seen as a bellwether battleground state, though it has trended more strongly Republican since Trump’s White House win in 2016.The rally came a day after Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, said he would not endorse his old boss for a second White House term.

Germany’s central bank confronts Nazi past and vows ‘never again’Research by Deutsche Bundesbank details how predecessor the Reichsbank financed Hitler’s war efforts, including handling gold, currency taken from concentration camp victims-By Reuters and ToI Staff Today, 10:58 am-MAR 17,24

Germany’s Bundesbank confronted its predecessor’s Nazi past in new research published on Friday and vowed it would never allow antisemitism or discrimination. The bank put out an abridged version of an upcoming series of volumes, at a time when the far right is on the rise in Germany, triggering nationwide protests in a country still scarred by its 20th-century history. The research, which examined central banking in Germany between 1924 and 1970, detailed how the Reichsbank financed Adolf Hitler’s war efforts, helped the exploitation of occupied territories, and was involved in the confiscation, expropriation, and sale of Jewish assets. It also processed gold and foreign currency taken from prisoners murdered in the Nazi concentration and extermination camps.“The Reichsbank acted as a willing stooge and receiver of stolen goods in the context of the financial holocaust,” said Albrecht Ritschl, a professor of economic history at the London School of Economics and one of the authors of the research.Founded in Frankfurt in 1957, the Bundesbank had little in common with the Berlin-based Reichsbank, which was wound down after the end of World War II and initially replaced with the Bank deutscher Länder. The Reichsbank’s gold, for example, was confiscated by the Allies. However, some of its staff and above all middle managers were hired by the new institutions after undergoing a process known as “denazification.”Imposed by the Allies at the end of the war, the criteria for such denazification became laxer after 1948 as Germany became more integrated in the West and the central bank scrambled to find qualified personnel, the researchers found.“The degree of continuity in terms of what we might call the functional elite is thus on a par with that seen in ministries and other public institutions,” said fellow author Magnus Brechtken, deputy director of the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich.Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel hoped the 100-page booklet would reach the general public and vowed to learn lessons from it during a press conference to present the research. The academic work “traces how central bankers became willing accessories to a criminal regime,” Nagel said according to a report from the Deutsche Welle broadcaster. “It shows how susceptible they were to racism, antisemitism and anti-democratic thinking.”“Never again should there be antisemitism in Germany,” he said, repeating a slogan used in recent demonstrations against the far-right.“Never again should minorities be excluded and subjected to state tyranny, never again should government bodies like the central bank be allowed to trample on democratic values,” Nagel added.

Egypt strikes deal for billions in EU funding as economy struggles-European Union seeks strategic partnership with Cairo amid rising instability across the Middle East-By Reuters and ToI Staff Today, 1:32 pm-MAR 17,24

European leaders were expected to announce a 7.4 billion euro ($8.06 billion) funding package and an upgraded relationship with Egypt in Cairo on Sunday, part of a push to stem migrant flows across the Mediterranean that has been criticized by rights groups. The agreement, which lifts the European Union’s relationship with Egypt to a “strategic partnership,” is designed to boost cooperation in areas including renewable energy, trade and security while delivering grants, loans and other funding over the next three years to support Egypt’s faltering economy. That funding is expected to include 5 billion euros in macro-financial assistance, 1.8 billion euros of investments and 600 million euros in grants, a senior EU commission official said. The macro-financial assistance includes 1 billion euros in emergency funding to be delivered this year. The remaining 4 billion euros will be subject to approval by the European parliament, the official said. Most of the money is newly allocated and the funding was drawn up in close cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, the official added. European governments have long been worried about the risk of instability in Egypt, a country of 106 million people that has been struggling to raise foreign currency and where economic adversity has pushed increasing numbers to migrate in recent years.Inflation has been running close to record highs and many Egyptians say they struggle to get by. Over the past month, however, the financial pressure on the government has eased as Egypt has struck a record deal for Emirati investment, expanded its loan program with the IMF and sharply devalued its currency.Diplomats say Egypt’s strategic importance has been underscored by the conflict in neighboring Sudan, which has created the world’s biggest displacement crisis, and the war in Gaza, which borders Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.Egypt has been the main conduit for international humanitarian aid sent to Gaza, and, along with Qatar and the United States, has been trying to mediate a truce between Israel and Hamas. The war between Israel and Hamas broke out following Hamas’s devastating October 7 onslaught, which saw terrorists from Gaza infiltrate Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 253 while committing atrocities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is leading a delegation on Sunday that also includes the Italian, Greek, Austrian and Belgian prime ministers, and the Cypriot president.Egypt’s finance minister has said the government has lined up a total of $20 billion in multilateral support after increasing its loan and economic reform program with the IMF.Crossings via Libya-Egyptian officials say Egypt deserves recognition for hosting an estimated nine million foreign residents and largely shutting off irregular migration from its north coast since 2016.But there has been a surge in Egyptians trying to cross to Europe via Libya, and the European Union is already providing funding aimed at reducing those flows. In recent months, the Greek islands of Crete and Gavdos have seen a steep rise in migrant arrivals – mostly from Egypt, Bangladesh and Pakistan – raising concern about a new smuggling route in the Mediterranean. Activists have criticized Western support for President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who came to power a decade ago after leading the overthrow of Egypt’s first democratically elected leader, Mohammed Morsi, who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.Rights groups say tens of thousands of people have been jailed in a crackdown that has swept up dissidents from across the political spectrum.El-Sissi’s backers say security measures were needed to stabilize Egypt after the turmoil of the 2011 “Arab Spring” uprising and pave the way for providing social rights such as housing and jobs.EU moves to offer financing in return for migration curbs in other countries including in Tunisia have run up against obstacles and criticism.“The blueprint is the same as the flawed EU deals with Tunisia and Mauritania: stop migrants, ignore abuses,” Human Rights Watch said of the plan to enhance ties with Egypt and provide new financing.

Iran signs big contracts with domestic oil companies amid sanctions-Oil minister says country aims to add 350,000 barrels per day of oil production by end of Persian year with new deals-By AFP Today, 7:14 pm-MAR 17,24

TEHRAN — Iran sealed contracts on Sunday worth billions of dollars with domestic companies to boost its oil production in the face of Western sanctions. In a ceremony broadcast on state TV, the oil ministry and Iranian businesses signed deals worth $13 billion to increase daily oil production in six major fields.Shana, the official news agency for the oil industry, labeled the deals Iran’s “biggest oil contracts in the past decade” and said they aimed to add 350,000 barrels per day to the country’s daily production. In October, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji promised the country’s oil production would reach 3.6 million barrels per day by the end of the Persian year on March 19.In the new year under the Persian calendar, “production will reach four million barrels per day,” he added.Iran’s oil sector suffered a blow in 2018 when Western sanctions were reimposed, forcing foreign companies to leave the country, after the United States withdrew from a landmark deal designed to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.According to the oil ministry, Iran will be “relying on domestic expertise” to help boost the production in its western and southwestern fields, including Azadegan in Khuzestan province, on the border with Iraq.Development contracts for Iran’s oldest oil field, Masjed Soleyman in Khuzestan, were also signed.First drilled in 1908, well No. 1 in Masjed Soleyman is the oldest in the Middle East. The oil ministry signed the contracts two days before the 73rd anniversary of the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry, then run by the British-controlled Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.Last week, Iran said it had given $20 billion in contracts to domestic firms to ramp up production from the offshore South Pars gas field in the Gulf, which is shared with Qatar.According to the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), Iran was the world’s seventh-largest crude oil producer in 2022.It also holds the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves, behind Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, according to the EIA.

Ben Gvir seeks to permit Jewish visits to Temple Mount on last 10 days of Ramadan-Non-Muslims usually barred from visiting highly sensitive holy site at culmination of Muslim holy month; security officials ‘discussing’ far-right minister’s request-By Jeremy Sharon
Today, 3:18 pm-MAR 18,24

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir is pressing to for permission for Jews to visit the Temple Mount during the last 10 days of Ramadan, a period of time when such visits have in the past been prohibited.Although Jewish visitation to the holy site is permitted in the first 20 days of the Muslim month of fasting, it is usually shut down completely during the last 10 days since that is when the Laylat al-Qadr falls — the holiest night of the year in Islam ,which as such is considered to be particularly sensitive in terms of security concerns.Ben Gvir, who heads the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, is an ardent proponent of Jewish visitation rights on the Temple Mount and has visited the site during his tenure as minister.Senior security officials have been been informed of Ben Gvir’s request and are examining the request, the minister’s office said. But Channel 13 news, which first reported the story, said that senior cabinet officials have stated that the national security minister’s request will not be granted due to the extremely tense security situation in Jerusalem owing to the ongoing war in Gaza and concerns of unrest among the Palestinian population of East Jerusalem and the West Bank.Non-Muslim visits to the Temple Mount are permitted during normal times for three and a half hours in the morning and an hour in the afternoon from Sunday to Thursday.During the first 20 days of Ramadan, visits to the site for non-Muslims are permitted only in the morning hours. This year’s Ramadan comes amid boiling tensions in the region stemming from the ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the group’s savage October 7 attack, when thousands of terrorists rampaged through southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.Although the national security minister has heavy influence over the Temple Mount since he has authority over the police force, which determines arrangements on a daily basis at the site, broader policy over the Mount is ultimately in the hands of the prime minister, who will often make decisions on the basis of recommendations from his National Security Council. Before the start of Ramadan last Sunday, Ben Gvir had sought to restrict the numbers of Muslim worshipers allowed at the site during the holy month, including Arab Israelis, but was ultimately overruled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Temple Mount is the holiest place in Judaism, where two biblical Temples once stood, while the Al-Aqsa Mosque there is the third-holiest shrine in Islam, making the site a central flashpoint of the Israeli-Arab conflict.Tens of thousands of Muslim worshipers took part in the first Friday prayers of Ramadan on the Temple Mount last week. The prayers ending without incident despite efforts by terrorist groups to spark conflict in the holy city.In a statement on Thursday, Hamas had called on its followers to “participate urgently in defending Al-Aqsa Mosque against the aggression that lurks in these critical times.”In past years during Ramadan, Palestinians have at times barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque, some with explosives and rocks. Police operations to clear them out have often resulted in violence.Last year, two consecutive nights of clashes between police officers and Palestinians at the mosque sparked barrages of rocket fire from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

Jordan, EU foreign policy chief accuse Israel of deliberately starving Gazans-Foreign Minister Katz rejects statements, places blame on Hamas disruption of aid efforts; UN report says famine can be averted-By Lazar Berman-Today, 4:01 pm-MAR 18,24

Israel came under withering criticism from neighboring Jordan, the European Union and international organizations on Monday, including accusations that it is purposely starving Gazan civilians. The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told an EU foreign ministers meeting that “starvation is used as a weapon of war. Israel is provoking famine.” He made similar comments to the UN Security Council last week. Also on Monday, the head of UNRWA, the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency, said that the hunger in the Gaza Strip was “man-made.”A UN-backed report said famine was expected in some 70% of households in the north of the Gaza Strip between now and May.Across the whole of the Strip, the number of people facing “catastrophic hunger” has risen to 1.1 million, or some half of the population, according to a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a collaboration of over a dozen international organizations, including several UN agencies. And at a press conference in Amman with his Brazilian counterpart, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi accused Israel of “starving children to death and taking more than 2 million Palestinians hostage.”Rejecting the accusations, Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Israel was allowing aid into Gaza.“Israel allows extensive humanitarian aid into Gaza by land, air, and sea for anyone willing to help,” Katz wrote on X. “Despite Hamas violently disrupting aid convoys and UNRWA’s collaboration with them, we persist.”He added that Borrell should “stop attacking Israel and recognize our right to self-defense against Hamas’s crimes.”UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said during a press conference in Cairo with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry: “We are engaged in a race against the clock to try to reverse the impact of the spreading hunger and the looming famine in the Gaza Strip.”The crisis could be resolved and reversed if there were political will to do so and Gaza could be “flooded” with food through land crossings, he added. The UN agency chief also said more than 150 of UNRWA’s facilities have been hit, damaged or completely destroyed during Israel’s air and land campaign to destroy Hamas, the Islamist terrorist group that rules the territory and that sparked the war with its deadly attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7.“We also know that a number of staff that have been arrested have gone through very tough investigation, ill-treatment and humiliation,” Lazzarini said. The UN official said his entry request to Gaza’s border town of Rafah had been declined: “I intended to go to Rafah today, but I have been informed an hour ago that my entry into Rafah is declined.”The rejection was not the responsibility of the Egyptian government, Shoukry said. “You were declined by the Israeli government, refused the entry which is an unprecedented move for representative at this high position,” he said. The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem told The Times of Israel that it had not received any request from Lazzarini.Israel has been under increasing pressure to allow more aid into Gaza. The United States has joined other countries in airdropping supplies to the isolated region of northern Gaza and has announced plans to construct a pier to get aid in.The UN has reported particular difficulty in accessing northern Gaza for deliveries of food and other aid. Residents say they have resorted to eating wild plants and animal fodder, and some have stormed the few aid trucks that have made it through, sometimes with deadly consequences.Monday’s UN-backed report said it was not too late to stop famine from taking hold.“The rapidly escalating hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip must immediately be curbed. This requires putting an end to the hostilities, mobilizingnecessary resources and ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” the report read. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 31,000 people in the Strip have been killed in the fighting so far, a figure that cannot be independently verified, and includes those killed by the terror groups’ failed rocket launches and some 13,000 Hamas terrorists Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 gunmen inside Israel on October 7.Ahead of the EU meeting, Borrell also said he is confident that the body will agree on sanctions against both Hamas and violent Israeli West Bank settlers.“It seems that today all will agree on putting sanctions on both Hamas and the violent settlers who are harassing Palestinians in the West Bank,” he told reporters. The EU was close to agreeing on the sanctions after Hungary signaled an end to its opposition, European diplomats said on Friday. Some EU members close to Israel, such as Germany and Austria, had said they were ready to approve sanctions on violent settlers once more sanctions had been imposed on Hamas.Reuters and AFP contributed to this report.

Iceland volcano: 'Most powerful' eruption yet narrowly misses Grindavik but could still trigger life-threatening toxic gas plume-News-By Harry Baker-MAR 18,24

The submerged volcano in Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has erupted for the fourth time in four months. The resulting lava flow narrowly missed Grindavík but could still reach the sea and potentially unleash a toxic gas plume.A volcano in southwest Iceland has erupted without warning for the fourth time in four months, opening up massive, fiery fissures in the ground — potentially the largest it has produced to date. The eruption spewed out a river of molten rock that narrowly missed the town of Grindavík. The eruption poses no immediate risk to local people. However, if the lava flow reaches the sea, which is still possible, it could create a giant plume of toxic gas that would be "life-threatening" to anyone near the shore, experts warn. The volcano is a roughly 9 mile-long (15 kilometers) magma tunnel that runs beneath the ground, stretching north from Grindavík toward Sundhnúk in the Reykjanes Peninsula. When the hidden magma gets too close to the surface, it breaks through, triggering long and narrow fissures that violently spit out lava, ash and smoke. The most extreme activity does not last for long, but the resulting lava can travel for several miles, burning anything in its path before eventually cooling down. The volcano first erupted in December last year after weeks of seismic activity and ground deformation, before blowing its top again in January this year. Another eruption began on Feb. 6, and lasted for just over a week.On Saturday (March 16), the volcano suddenly erupted for a fourth time at around 8 p.m. local time with almost no warning. This time, lava broke through in three separate places, creating two fissures between Hagafell and Stóra-Skógfell, according to a translated statement from the Icelandic Met Office (IMO).The largest fissure is around 1.8 miles (2.9 km) long, which is around the same size as the previous eruption, IMO reported. However, Iceland's Civil Protection estimates that the combined length of the latest fissures could be up to 2.5 miles (4 km) long, which would make the eruption the biggest since volcanic activity in the region restarted in 2021.   Map shows the extent of lava 5 hours after the eruption in orange. The red outline shows how far the lava had moved by approximately 3 p.m. on March 17.   (Image credit: Icelandic Met Office)-Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, told Icelandic news site RÚV that this eruption was the volcano's "most powerful" to date. The eruption is still ongoing at both fissures, but the rate of magma release has now reduced to between 2% and 5% of the original outpour, he added.A lava flow from the smaller fissure came within about 1,000 feet (300 meters) of Grindavík's perimeter defenses, which were erected during the first eruption, but is now moving away from the town and toward the coast, according to the IMO. Silhuoettes of people standing infront of the bright orange sky that has volcanic gas clouds in the air. If lava does reach the shore, rapid cooling of the molten rock could release hydrochloric acid gas, IMO representatives wrote. In high doses this colorless gas can corrode the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, leading to long-lasting injuries or even death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In a radius of about 500m [1,640 feet] from the point where lava would come into contact with the sea, conditions would be life-threatening," IMO representatives wrote. The threat to life diminishes the further away from the shore the gas reaches, and beyond 2 miles (3 km) it is unlikely that anyone would be in danger, they added.Grindavík lies within the toxic gas' potential danger zone. However, a majority of the town has been evacuated and the remaining residents have been warned to stay away.Skyline of the city infront of a bright orange sky that is filled with gas clouds. It is still unclear if the lava will reach the sea. As of Sunday (March 17), the lava flow was only around 2,000 feet (600 meters) from the coast and is expected to get even closer by the end of Monday (March 18), according to the IMO. But it is slowing down. At its peak, the molten rock was traveling at around 985 feet per hour (300 meters per hour) but has since slowed down to around 39 feet per hour (12 meters per hour), IMO reported. There are also suggestions that the lava may have begun to pool behind a rocky outcrop, which may slow it down even further, RÚV reported."It is nevertheless important to be prepared for this scenario," Civil Protection representatives wrote in a statement.Bright orange sky above a quiet street.Hot molten lava.Lava creates streams of molten magma and creates a massive gas cloud.
