Leader of far-right US Proud Boys group was government informant, records show-Court documents reveal head of male chauvinist extremist group, arrested prior to US Capitol riot, cooperated enthusiastically with police after he was accused of fraud in 2012-By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER-28 January 2021, 11:42 am

AP — The leader of the Proud Boys, who was arrested in Washington shortly before the Capitol riot, previously worked undercover and cooperated with investigators after he was accused of fraud in 2012, court documents show.Henry “Enrique” Tarrio helped law enforcement in a variety of investigations nearly a decade ago by providing information and going undercover, the records show. The Proud Boys is a far-right, male chauvinist extremist group that seized on the Trump administration’s policies and was a major agitator during earlier protests and the Capitol riot on January 6. The Proud Boys have railed against a “deep state” and work to break down the current government system, and so the revelations of Tarrio as a federal informant came as quite a surprise. The details of Tarrio’s cooperation, which was first reported Wednesday by Reuters, were found in a transcript of a 2014 hearing in federal court in Florida regarding his sentence for participating in a scheme involving the resale of diabetic test strips. The prosecutor and Tarrio’s defense attorney both cited Tarrio’s extensive cooperation in arguing that his sentence of 30 months should be cut. The judge agreed to reduce his sentence to 16 months, the records show.“Your Honor, frankly, in all the years, which is now more than 30 that I’ve been doing this, I’ve never had a client as prolific in terms of cooperating in any respect,” said Tarrio’s lawyer at the time, Jeffrey Feiler, according to the transcript. An email seeking comment was not immediately returned from a lawyer representing Tarrio in his current case. In an interview with Reuters, Tarrio denied ever cooperating with authorities. After Tarrio’s 2012 indictment, he helped the government prosecute more than a dozen other people, the federal prosecutor told the judge, according to the transcript. Tarrio’s lawyer said he was the first defendant to cooperate in the case and was also involved in a variety of police undercover operations involving things like anabolic steroids and prescription narcotics.“From day one, he was the one who wanted to talk to law enforcement, wanted to clear his name, wanted to straighten this out so that he could move on with his life. And he has in fact cooperated in a significant way,” the prosecutor said, according to the transcript.People march with those who claim they are members of the Proud Boys extremist group at a rally in support of US President Donald Trump in Washington, January 6, 2021. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)-Tarrio was arrested in Washington on January 4, two days before the pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol in a bid to overturn US President Joe Biden’s victory. He was accused of vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner at a historic Black church during an earlier protest in the nation’s capital. The banner was ripped from Asbury United Methodist Church property, torn and set aflame in December.Tarrio was seen with the sign in video of the incident posted on YouTube, according to a police report. When police pulled Tarrio over, officers found two unloaded magazines emblazoned with the Proud Boys logo in his bag that had a capacity of 30 rounds each, authorities said.

Pandemic caused worst year for US economy since 1946-Commerce Department reports GDP shrunk by 3.5% in 2020 while net exports fell 13% and personal consumption expenditures dropped 3.9%-By Chris Stein and Heather Scott-28 January 2021, 10:31 pm

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States saw its sharpest contraction in growth since 1946 as the coronavirus pandemic hammered the economy last year, but while the country may be set for a recovery, it hasn’t arrived yet.The world’s largest economy shrunk by 3.5 percent in 2020, the Commerce Department reported on Thursday, after COVID-19 rearranged daily life and forced many businesses to shut down or change their operations while laying off workers in droves. Those mass layoffs, which began in March as the pandemic intensified, continue to take a toll, with the Labor Department reporting nearly 1.3 million new claims for unemployment benefits filed last week. The data underscores the job awaiting US President Joe Biden, who took office just over a week ago, promising to get the country back on track with a $1.9 trillion spending proposal that’s an initial salvo against the twin economic and health crises. But by this point, analysts agree there’s only so much the government can do to support the economy, which won’t be back to normal until the raging virus is done away with or has at least been brought to manageable levels.“Additional fiscal stimulus and broader vaccine diffusion should support an improved labor market in the spring, but claims are expected to remain high in the near term as the pandemic continues to restrict activity, with new strains of the virus a concern,” Nancy Vanden Houten of Oxford Economics said. The toll becomes clear-The pandemic caused an unheard-of whipsaw in the growth, with the economy contracting a record 31.4% annualized in the second quarter of 2020, when the pandemic’s restrictions were at their most severe, then shooting back up 33.4% the next quarter as businesses reopened. In the fourth quarter, GDP grew by an annual rate of 4.0%, according to the Commerce Department’s first estimate for the final three months of last year. That wasn’t enough to stop 2020 from seeing an overall contraction, which the government said was caused by a drop in spending as well as in “exports, private inventory investment, nonresidential fixed investment, and state and local government.”Net exports fell 13% last year while personal consumption expenditures dropped 3.9%.The declines were partially offset by the strong housing market and federal government spending like the trillions of dollars in stimulus money Congress passed last year amid the pandemic.“Against the risk of excessive winter pessimism, we believe in spring optimism,” Gregory Daco of Oxford Economics said.Even if Biden’s stimulus bill is eventually watered down by cost-conscious lawmakers, that — combined with the effects of COVID-19 vaccine drives and a recovery in the employment market — could cause the economy to expand by 5.5 percent in 2021, he said.-Tough job market-But if the job market is in for a recovery, the wait continues for now.The Labor Department reported 847,000 new seasonally-adjusted filings for regular unemployment benefits, fewer than the week prior and still above the single worst week of the 2008-2010 global financial crisis, 10 months after the mass layoffs began.Another 426,856 claims, without seasonal adjustment, were made under a special program for workers not normally eligible for aid, while the data also showed more and more workers claiming benefits under programs for the long-term unemployed. All told, nearly 18.3 million people were receiving some form of assistance as of the week ended January 9, and Rubeela Farooqi of High Frequency Economics said that massive number is unlikely to decrease meaningfully until the pandemic can be tamed.“Conditions will remain weak and recovery will be slow until infections can be curbed, and the economy can reopen more completely,” she said in an analysis.Yet even as joblessness surged last year, home buying did too, as those who could afford it took advantage of low interest rates to make major property purchases. The Commerce Department estimated on Thursday 811,000 new homes were sold in 2020, the most since 2006.

New York undercounted COVID nursing home deaths by thousands, state’s AG says-76-page report finds numbers lowballed by more than 50%, backing earlier findings that state was one of few in US that didn’t count residents who eventually died in hospitals-By MARINA VILLENEUVE, Bernard Condon and Matt Sedensky-JAN 29,21-Today, 12:52 am

ALBANY (AP) — New York state undercounted COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents by thousands, the US state’s attorney general charged in a report Thursday that dealt a blow to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s oft-repeated claims that his state is doing better than others in protecting its most vulnerable. The 76-page report found an undercount of more than 50 percent, backing up the findings of an Associated Press investigation last year that focused on the fact that New York is one of the only states in the country that count residents who died on nursing home property and not those who later died in hospitals.Such an undercount would mean the state’s current official tally of 8,711 nursing home deaths to the virus is actually more than 13,000, boosting New York from No. 6 to highest in the nation.“While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves,” Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. The report from a fellow Democratic official undercut Cuomo’s frequent argument that the criticism of his handling of the virus in nursing homes was part of a political “blame game,” and it was a vindication for thousands of families who believed their loved ones were being omitted from counts to advance the governor’s image as a pandemic hero.CVS Pharmacist Gerard Diebner administers the COVID-19 vaccine to a nursing home resident at Harlem Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, a nursing home facility, on January 15, 2021 in New York. (AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura)“It’s important to me that my mom was counted,” said Vivian Zayas, whose 78-year-old mother died in April after contracting COVID-19 at a nursing home in West Islip, New York. “Families like mine knew these numbers were not correct.”Cuomo’s office and the state health department have not responded to repeated requests for comment.James has for months been examining discrepancies between the number of deaths being reported by the state’s Department of Health and the number of deaths reported by the homes themselves. Her investigators looked at a sample of 62 of the state’s roughly 600 nursing homes. They reported 1,914 deaths of residents from COVID-19, while the state Department of Health logged only 1,229 deaths at those same facilities. One unnamed facility, for example, had an official death toll of 11 but the attorney general’s probe found that 40 had actually died.AP’s analysis in August concluded that the state could be understating deaths by as much as 65%, based on discrepancies between its totals and numbers being reported to federal regulators. That analysis was, like James’ report, based on only a slice of data, rather than a comprehensive look.To date, despite public records requests from the AP and repeated pleas from state and federal lawmakers, New York’s health department has yet to produce the full number of nursing home residents who died in hospitals as well as the nursing home properties. Health Commissioner Howard Zucker has said several times that the state is working on such data.State Sen. Gustavo Rivera, a Democrat who has blasted the Cuomo administration for its incomplete death count, said he was “sadly unsurprised” by the report.“Families who lost loved ones deserve honest answers,” Rivera said. “For their sake, I hope that this report will help us unveil the truth and put policies in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.”Cuomo, who last fall released a book touting his leadership in dealing with the virus, has not been shy about using New York’s lower nursing home death count to make the argument that his state is doing better than others in caring for those in such facilities.“There’s also no doubt that we’re in this hyper-political environment so everybody wants to point fingers,” Cuomo told CBS “This Morning” in October. “New York, actually, we’re number 46 out of 50 in terms of percentage of deaths in nursing homes — 46 out of 50. So, yes, people died in nursing homes… but 46 out of 50, it’s not a predominantly New York problem.”The attorney general’s report also took aim at New York’s controversial March 25 policy that sought to create more space in hospitals by releasing recovering COVID-19 patients into nursing homes, which critics contended was a driving factor in causing nursing home outbreaks.James’ report said those admissions “may have contributed to increased risk of nursing home resident infection and subsequent fatalities,” noting that at least 4,000 nursing home residents with COVID-19 died after that guidance. But James’ report said the issue would require further study to conclusively prove such a link.New York’s health department released a much-criticized report last summer that claimed the March 25 policy, which was reversed in May, was “not a significant factor” in deaths.James’ review also found that a lack of infection controls at nursing homes put residents at increased risk of harm, while nursing homes that had lower federal scores for staffing had higher COVID-19 fatality rates.“As the pandemic and our investigations continue,” she wrote, “it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate.”

Ancient cloth with Bible’s purple dye found in Israel, dated to King David’s era-3 scraps from 1,000 BCE, earliest such finds in region, point to Edomite kingdom described in Bible; vibrant and lasting ‘royal’ dye, mark of the elite, comes from murex sea snails-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-28 January 2021, 9:42 pm

Israeli researchers have found three textile scraps near the southern tip of Israel colored with the biblically described “argaman” royal purple dye, and dated them to circa 1,000 BCE — the era of King David. The earliest ever such finds in this region, the vibrant cloths add tangible weight, in particular, to the Bible’s account of an Edomite kingdom in the area at that time.Colored with the most precious dye of the ancient world, the textile scraps were excavated in the Timna Valley near Eilat, and offer startling new insight into an ancient elite class. The tiny, vibrantly colored Iron Age cloth pieces are the earliest evidence of this precious dye in the entire Southern Levant and shed new light on the early Edomite kingdom and Israelite kingdoms 3,000 years ago — a period when the Bible details the conquering of the Edomites by King David. Also called “true” or “Tyrian purple,” the vibrant, millennia-lasting color is produced by dye glands gathered from three species of live murex sea snails on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. To reach the famed King Solomon Copper Mines at Timna near the shore of the Red Sea, the cloth would have traveled hundreds of kilometers, which only added to its prestige and value.“It is a very early period to find ‘true purple’ in use and it’s a very strange location,” Tel Aviv University Prof. Erez Ben-Yosef told The Times of Israel Thursday. “It’s deep in the desert, where we didn’t [traditionally] think these prestigious materials were in use.”The discovery, said Ben-Yosef, offers “additional evidence for our new understanding of nomadic people at that time period, at the time of the emergence of these ancient kingdoms of Israel, Edom, Moab, Amon, the local kingdoms of the biblical time.” Ben-Yosef has excavated at Timna since 2013.The true purple “argaman” dye and its associated azure “techelet” variant (created through variant processing of the snails’ dye) are mentioned dozens of times in the Hebrew Bible and in the circa 690 BCE Sennacherib’s Cylinder, among other texts. The true purple is associated with royalty and the priesthood, as well as textiles used in the Tabernacle and Jewish Temple. The cloth and the murex snails themselves were given an in-depth, hands-on study in the new interdisciplinary, collaborative research paper published this week by the prestigious PLOS One scientific journal. The investigation took the researchers from field excavations of Timna, to Israeli university laboratories — to fish markets in Milano and Palermo, Sicily.Until now, the earliest textile evidence of the royal purple dye were dated to at least 1,000 years later in the Roman period, when it was highly valued. The paper, “Early evidence of royal purple dyed textile from Timna Valley (Israel),” was co-authored by Dr. Naama Sukenik from the Israel Antiquities Authority and Ben-Yosef, in collaboration with Prof. Zohar Amar, Dr. David Iluz and Dr. Alexander Varvak from Bar-Ilan University and the IAA’s Dr. Orit Shamir.Ben-Yosef explained that Timna is first and foremost known for its copper, which was mined by ancient Land of Israel dwellers as early as the 5th millennia BCE, going all the way to the early Islamic period some 1,400 years ago. Even recently, he said, the nascent state of Israel had a small factory that produced copper there. The dry climatic conditions at Timna, deep in the Arava Desert, allow for the unusually good preservation of organic materials, similar to the much later Roman era textile and leather finds discovered in the Judaean caves and at Masada. What is noteworthy in Timna, said Ben-Yosef, is that the “big story” is related to the early Iron Age. “We’re talking about the 11th to the 9th centuries BCE, and it is a very debated period in the history of the land,” the period attributed to the rise of the biblical kingdoms of Judah and Israel.Alongside remnants of textiles and other indications of relatively luxurious conditions, the picture painted after continued excavations is changing the view of the nomadic Edomite, said Ben-Yosef. “We see it as the early Edomite Kingdom,” versus a mere tribal camp. With Timna’s arid desert, “We find stuff that you usually don’t find in regular excavations, such as textiles, ropes, leather, things that usually decay and are not preserved,” said Ben-Yosef. “So we have a unique window into the people of the region at that very early period through these amazing and unique organic materials. We have dozens and dozens of fragments of textiles and ropes, cordage, basketry, things that usually you don’t find.”Sukenik, the IAA’s curator of organic finds, told The Times of Israel that every year the collaborative research group takes a trip to the Timna site to access — and marvel at — the extremely rare ancient finds. The new finds were located in Slaves Hill, arguably the largest copper smelting camp in the valley, which the team has excavated for the past six years. While excavating, the archaeologists discerned tiny pieces of textiles of many types emerging from the ground. Some were derived from rough tent coverings, some from sacks, and some of the pieces were brightly colored.Sukenik said the team noted the brilliant purple peeking out on three of the many scraps of textiles excavated that year.“We saw a few pieces in which the shade was really special. We really wanted it to be argaman [true purple], the most expensive dye in the ancient textile industry,” Sukenik said.-From field to lab-The textile pieces were taken back to the Bar Ilan University laboratory, where it was confirmed that molecules 6-monobromoindigotin and 6,6-dibromoindigotin — unique to the murex sea snails which produce the true purple dye — were discovered on the cloth scraps after High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyses, which is used to identify organic dyestuff.According to the paper, “Identifying the organic dye colorants in archaeological textiles is a complex task due to the low concentration of the molecules in the fibers and the limited amount of material available for destructive analysis.”Hitting upon this result was a “Sisyphean task,” said Sukenik, and required very intensive work.Upon learning that the dye was indeed the ancient true purple, Sukenik said, “Personally, it made me really happy.” She said that a trove of ancient Murex trunculus snail shells were recently excavated at the Tel Shikmona site in northern Israel, dating back to the 10th-7th centuries BCE. Being organic material, one of the Timna cloth pieces was also sent for radiocarbon 14 testing at a laboratory in Oxford, where the date of 1,000 BCE was calculated. If we were to peek into David and Solomon’s closet we’d see similar clothing — and perhaps even more true purple-During the early Iron Age, “We already knew that there was a true purple textile dye industry,” she said, but until now, there had been no dyed textiles. According to the paper, the first archaeological evidence for use of the dye dates from the 19th century BCE in the form of murex shells.“I’m so happy that Erez [Ben-Yosef] gave us the opportunity to peek into the clothes closet from the period of David and Solomon and see the wardrobe of the elite that lived in the period at the copper mines,” she said.“I suppose that if we were to peek into David and Solomon’s closet we’d see similar clothing — and perhaps even more true purple,” said Sukenik.Getting hands dirty for science-Discovering that the 3,000-year-old textile scraps were dyed with royal purple was only one step of the journey undertaken by this ambitious research project. Another chapter not recorded in the PLOS One paper saw Bar Ilan University Prof. Zohar Amar visit the fish markets of Italy to conduct experiments on the three species of snail. The three species of snail are endangered in Israel and Amar told The Times of Israel that he couldn’t obtain enough samples to truly conduct his experiments. So he took himself to Milano, which holds the largest fish market in Europe. There, the snails are eaten as part of the varied Italian diet and two of the species — Spiny Dye-Murex (Murex brandaris) and Banded Dye-Murex (Murex trunculus) — are plentifully traded in the market.Amar rented a laboratory and hired local staff to conduct hundreds of experiments on thousands of snails. Each snail’s dye gland, he said, only holds a minuscule amount — circa one gram. So he ordered a massive supply, which arrived in special refrigerators that kept the snails fresh and alive.Even in ancient texts such as the writings of the Roman author Pliny the Elder and the Jewish Talmud, it was emphasized that the snail glands be procured fresh, which creates the best dye. Amar said, having used dried glands that were shipped to Israel in some experiments, he can now vouch for the value of fresh specimens. The glands were traditionally dried in the sun, but Amar imported an oven from Israel to speed up the process.“It was very hard work, very stinky,” he said, much like working in a fresh fish market, he said. What they ate, I threw away, and what they threw away I used-The Italian fishermen who delivered the snails “thought I was a bit crazy. What they ate, I threw away, and what they threw away I used,” he laughed. Two thousand years ago, the rabbis discussed how impure creatures such as the sea snails — forbidden from an observant Jewish diet — could be the source of a dye used in such sacred spaces as the Tabernacle and Temple.Amar answered that through his experimentation with the snails, he realized that nothing of the meat of the snail remains. Through the chemical processing of the snail glands into dye, “the material turns into something else.”While two of the species were in plentiful supply, locating the third species saw Amar take out the big guns — his Italian mother in law. With her help, the third species, Red-Mouthed Rock-shell (Murex haemastoma), was sourced in Palermo, Sicily. He traveled to the Mediterranean’s largest island, only to be disappointed when inclement weather caused the fisherman to come back without a catch. Only after a subsequent trip could he successfully harvest the third snail’s dye glands.Although Amar had studied the theory behind the preparation of the true purple and associated azure dyes, “in conducting in the practical work I learned a lot about the historical sources. It was like time tunnel to the past,” he said.He conducted his initial experiments bare-handed, only to discover that the dye that lasts millennia on archaeological artifacts quickly stained his hands blue for weeks. He said that it gave insight to a Gemara passage that had always mystified him: The Gemara relates that when priests go in front of the congregation to give the traditional priestly blessing, they cannot have discolored hands. And if they do, it is only permissible for them to give the blessing if the entire congregation is likewise dyed. After walking around with blue hands for a couple weeks, he understood just how distracting people found it.“When I returned home on the plane, I had to hide my hands,” Amar laughed.

Olive the above-Olive voted as national tree to mark Tu Bishvat-With arbor ardor running high, tens of thousands of Israelis choose symbol of peace in KKL-JNF survey, helping it beat out Tabor, palm and lowly fig-By Sue Surkes-28 January 2021, 6:10 pm

Gnarled and ubiquitous, a symbol of peace and longevity, the olive tree has been crowned Israel’s national tree.Winning nearly 33 percent of some 148,000 votes cast online, the olive was declared a national symbol on Thursday, which marks Tu Bishvat, known as the Jewish arbor day.The contest was held by the tree-planting pioneers of the Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), which held the contest to celebrate 120 years of existence. The olive tree now joins a national flower, the anemone; and bird, the hoopoe.Aside from perhaps the hoopoe, which was declared by then-president Shimon Peres, these national symbols are informal and not necessarily officially recognized by the state. (A 2007 online poll by Ynet also “named” the olive the country’s national tree.)-Ripening fruit on an Israeli olive tree. (Amanda Borschel-Dan/Times of Israel)-Voters in the KKL-JNF poll were given seven trees to choose from. In second place was the Tabor oak (known for its big acorns), followed by the date palm, the terebinth (Palestine pistachio), and the eucalyptus, a non-native species brought to drain swamps and provide shade. The cypress and the fig rounded out the list.Aside from providing olives and olive oil, ever-present in Middle Eastern cuisine, the olive tree is highly symbolic for the Jewish people. An olive branch stands on either side of the seven-branched menorah in the state symbol. In the Bible, the dove that returns to Noah’s ark carries an olive branch in her mouth to symbolize the end of the flood and the return of life to earth. Today the branch is an international sign of peace.Olive trees can live for thousands of years, according to tradition. The Franciscan Order that maintains the site of the New Testament’s Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives maintains that eight olive trees there date back to the time of Jesus, which would make them among the oldest in the world, though there is no scientific proof of their wizened age.According to KKL-JNF, which has planted some 250 million trees since its establishment in the early 20th century, some 340,000 dunams (84,000 acres) of the country are planted with olive trees today, which produce more than 15,000 tons of oil and more than 24,000 tons of edible olives yearly.KKL-JNF itself, which over the years has moved toward planting richer combinations of native trees, said it plants some 15,000 olive tree seedlings every year.

European court ruling brings kosher slaughterhouse new business amid old fears-EU judges’ upholding of Belgian ruling provokes fears of eventual bloc-wide prohibitions on ritual slaughter, arousing memories of periods when Europe’s Jews faced persecution-By Justin Spike-28 January 2021, 1:06 pm

CSENGELE, Hungary (AP) — In a small room lined with religious texts, a rabbi demonstrates how knives are sharpened and inspected before they are put to use slitting the throats of chickens, geese and other poultry at a kosher slaughterhouse in Hungary.A shochet, someone trained and certified to slaughter animals according to Jewish tradition, whets a knife on increasingly fine stones before drawing the blade across a fingernail to feel for any imperfections in the steel that might inhibit a smooth, clean cut and cause unnecessary pain.“One of the most important things in kosher is that the animal doesn’t suffer,” said Rabbi Jacob Werchow, who oversees production at Quality Poultry, a 3 1/2-year-old slaughterhouse that supplies nearly 40% of Europe’s kosher poultry market and a large portion of the foie gras sold in Israel. The methods employed at the facility in the village of Csengele are based on ancient Judaic principles commanding the humane treatment of living creatures. They also are at the center of a debate about how to balance animal rights and religious rights as parts of Europe limit or effectively ban the ritual slaughter practices of Jews and Muslims.Companies like Quality Poultry have found new export markets since the European Union’s highest court last month upheld a law in Belgium’s Flanders region that prohibited slaughtering animals without first stunning them into unconsciousness. But the European Court of Justice ruling also has provoked fears of eventual EU-wide prohibitions on ritual slaughter, and aroused memories of periods when Europe’s Jews faced cruel persecution.“This decision doesn’t only affect the Belgian Jewish community, it affects all of us,” said Rabbi Slomo Koves of the Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities, which owns the Csengele slaughterhouse. “If this is the case in Belgium and the court has given it moral approval, that might start a process on a larger scale. If you go down this logic, the next step is you also cannot sell meat like this in these countries.”The EU has required the pre-stunning of animals since 1979, but allows member states to make religion-based exceptions. Most do, but along with Flanders and the Wallonia region of Belgium, Slovenia, Denmark and Sweden, as well as non-EU members Switzerland, Iceland and Norway, have done away with religious exemptions, meaning kosher and halal meat must be imported.Animal rights groups say that slitting the throats of livestock and poultry birds while they are conscious causes suffering that amounts to animal cruelty. Stunning methods vary, but the procedure most often is performed through electric shock or a bolt pistol to the animal’s skull.“Reversible stunning is the bare minimum we can do to protect animals,” said Reineke Hameleers, CEO of the Brussels-based Eurogroup for Animals. “They should be rendered unconscious before being killed.”The situation is not so cut-and-dried for religious observers. Jewish law forbids injury or damage to animal tissues before slaughter, and modern stunning practices can cause death or irreparable injuries that would render meat and poultry non-kosher, according to Koves.Although some Muslim religious authorities consider pre-slaughter stunning permissible, local Muslim groups argued that the stunning requirements in Flanders and Wallonia grew out of efforts by Belgium’s Islamophobic far-right to harass their communities.Rabbis Koves and Werchow said they believe the kosher slaughter method, known as shechita, is no less humane than the methods used in conventional meat production. In addition to the intensive process of sharpening and inspecting the knives, the shochet is trained to make the cut in a single smooth motion, severing the animal’s nerves and draining the blood from the brain in seconds.“Whatever you think about…whether kosher slaughter is better for the animal than regular slaughter, you are basically putting animal rights ahead of human rights,” Koves said. “If people are going to ban our rights to have kosher food, that means that they are limiting our human rights. And this, especially in a place like Europe, brings very bad memories to us.”Laws requiring the pre-slaughter stunning of animals appeared in some European countries as early as the late 19th century. Adolf Hitler mandated the practice in 1933 just after becoming chancellor of Germany, one of the first laws imposed by the Nazis.Jewish and Muslim groups challenged the Flanders law in Belgium’s Constitutional Court, which referred it to the European Court of Justice for a ruling on its compatibility with EU law.The Court of Justice’s advocate general advised the court to strike the Flanders law down, arguing it violated the rights of certain faiths to preserve their essential religious rites. But the court disagreed, finding the law “allow(s) a fair balance to be struck between the importance attached to animal welfare and the freedom of Jewish and Muslim believers to manifest their religion.”The animal welfare minister for the Brussels region of Belgium, where stunning is not mandatory, said the ruling would breathe new life into the mandatory stunning debate there. The Brussels chapter of the New Flemish Alliance, a center-right party whose members led the push for the law in Flanders, said it would now submit a proposal for an ordinance to ban slaughter without stunning in the capital region.Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the end of an EU summit in Brussels, Oct. 16, 2020 (Johanna Geron, Pool via AP)-The Hungarian government helped finance the slaughterhouse in Csengele, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban joined Jewish groups in condemning the court’s decision as an assault on religious freedom. In a January letter to the US-based Jewish Agency for Israel, Orban wrote that his government would “spare no effort to raise our voice against (the decision) in every possible international forum.”Koves and other chief rabbis in Europe are looking into ways to appeal the EU court’s decision.

Cutting-edge tech uses diapers’ urine-absorbing substance-Israel-led team creates a ‘Google Map’ of brain RNA; may help Alzheimer’s fight-Scientists sequence RNA inside tissue ‘to nano resolution,’ and say breakthrough heralds new insights on brain research and why immunotherapy only works on some cancer patients-By Nathan Jeffay-28 January 2021, 9:30 pm

An Israeli-led research team says it has created an unprecedented “molecular Google Map” of a brain’s memory center, in a first application of technology that may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other diseases. The breakthrough allows researchers to zoom in on RNA (ribonucleic acid) at nanoscale resolution without having to destroy the tissue to remove the RNA for analysis, giving a view of brain tissue that was hitherto out of doctors’ reach. The ability to sequence RNA, a building block of life that uses the information from DNA to create proteins, has transformed biology and medicine. But when trying to analyze RNA from brain tissue that had been destroyed, doctors could only get a much less detailed view — like a list of cities instead of a map — creating a major barrier to research into diseases that affect brain function. On Thursday night, a team from Bar Ilan University, Harvard and MIT published peer-reviewed research in the journal Science detailing how they managed to analyze and map out the hippocampus of a brain, its main memory center, without destroying the tissue. The brain tissue they used came from a mouse, but they have also proved their method on various human tissues. The researchers say their technology could have benefits in treating diseases of the brain like Alzheimer’s, and others including cancer.“It’s the equivalent of having a vast and detailed Google Map of the location of genes inside the brain, and other tissues, rather than a low-resolution image or a simple list of the genes that are there,” said Dr. Shahar Alon, the study’s lead author.“This new method allows us to visualize and measure millions of RNA molecules within the tissue with nanoscale precision, without having to extract them as we did previously,” he told The Times of Israel. “We can zoom in, just like you can on Google Maps, and see the molecules very close up.”To develop the new method, Alon modified a widely-available gel made from acrylamide, “the same substance that is used in diapers to absorb urine,” and used it to swell tissue to around four times its size. He then customized existing microscopes to give a detailed picture of the RNA.Analyzing RNA in situ means that doctors don’t only receive information on the identity of molecules, but also where exactly they are located inside tissue, which can prove valuable in advancing the understanding of diseases, Alon said. This potential is clearest in the brain, where the location of molecules is known to be crucial for proper functioning, especially for processes such as learning and memory, Alon stated.“We believe this could give a new glimpse into how Alzheimer’s affects the location of genes in the brain, and this could help in developing new treatments,” he said.RNA can be used as a “marker” or tool for getting a broad picture of cell behavior in a tissue, which means the new research has potential for analyzing cancerous cells, Alon said. This is because the technology can be used to show how cancer cells in a particular patient are being impacted by immune system cells.“One of the big mysteries of immunotherapy is why it works well in some patients and why it doesn’t in others. The maps we are building could reveal the difference, in biological mechanisms, between patients who are reacting and those who aren’t.“Imagine if you could take a biopsy of a patient and know in advance, with some certainty, whether immunotherapy is going to help this person or not. This could be helpful for doctors’ decision making, and in the development of new immunotherapy drugs which help patients who are not responding to current drugs,” he said.

Conservative Jewish leaders slam Israel’s rejection of Ugandan Jewish immigrants-While the Jewish Agency recognizes the non-Orthodox conversions of the Abayudaya community, the Interior Ministry refuses, driving a bigger wedge between Israeli and Diaspora Jewry-By Shira Hanau-28 January 2021, 7:07 pm

JTA — American Jews with ties to a small community of Jews in Uganda are condemning a decision by Israel’s Interior Ministry to reject the right of those Jews to immigrate to Israel. The ministry was responding to a Supreme Court petition by Kibita Yosef, a Ugandan Jew who had requested permission to make aliyah.Yosef, who converted to Judaism in 2008 under the auspices of the Conservative movement, first applied to immigrate to Israel while studying in a yeshiva there under the Law of Return. The law allows all Jews, including those who have converted, to become citizens. But the Interior Ministry, which handles citizenship, rejected Yosef’s application, according to the Haaretz daily. Yosef has appealed to the Supreme Court, which is expected to make its decision next week and could overrule the ministry. The conflict could have potential consequences for Jews worldwide.“We’re profoundly disappointed by the Interior Ministry’s decision,” said Rabbi Jacob Blumenthal, CEO of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly, which has a longstanding relationship with the Abayudaya Jewish community in Uganda. “We see it as a profound insult to the Conservative movement.”The Abayudaya began practicing Judaism in 1919 after a Ugandan leader, Semei Kakungulu, declared himself a Jew and began adopting Jewish practices. In 2002, the Conservative movement began overseeing official conversions in the community. The Ugandan community is affiliated with the Masorti Olami, the international organization representing Conservative communities worldwide, and is home to a chapter of Marom, a Conservative movement youth group. Gershom Sizomu later became the first Ugandan rabbi after his ordination at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, the Conservative movement’s seminary in Los Angeles. A woman from the community, Shoshanna Nambi, is now a rabbinical student at the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.Blumenthal said he had visited the community in Uganda and seen “the vibrancy of their Jewish life” and “a deep love of Israel and the Jewish people.” The Jewish Agency, the para-governmental organization in Israel that facilitates and encourages immigration to Israel, has recognized the Jewishness of Ugandan Jews. But the Interior Ministry, which has the final say over matters of citizenship and is run by Aryeh Deri, head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, has taken a different approach. In a court document this summer, the ministry established a new policy on “emerging” Jewish communities like the Abayudaya, Haaretz reported. According to the policy, these communities would not be eligible to immigrate under the Law of Return, which says that those who convert to Judaism in a “recognized” Jewish community are eligible to immigrate.Yosef, whose immigration status is in question, is being represented by the IsraeliReligious Action Center. The ultimate ruling in his case could have far-ranging ramifications for Jews living outside of Israel.“Part of this is a battle for who gets to define Judaism,” said Rabbi Bradley Artson, dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. The validity of conversion by non-Orthodox rabbis, and even by Orthodox rabbis who do not meet the standards of the ultra-Orthodox Israeli Chief Rabbinate, has been a contentious subject for years. Converts to Judaism who move to Israel whose conversions are not recognized by the Chief Rabbinate cannot marry in Israel, for the Chief Rabbinate controls marriages. Reform and Conservative conversions performed in Israel have not been recognized for years. While the Yosef decision may not immediately impact the potential immigration status of non-Orthodox converts in established Jewish communities, the rejection of the Ugandan community’s conversions could cast doubt on other conversions performed by those same Conservative rabbis.“Let’s be clear that denying that the Abayudaya are authentically Jewish is on some level saying that my rabbinical school isn’t an authentic rabbinical school and it’s saying that I’m not an authentic rabbi,” said Artson, who was involved in the conversion of hundreds of Ugandan Jews.Rabbi Jill Jacobs, executive director of T’ruah, a rabbinic human rights organization, condemned the Interior Ministry’s position on the Yosef case as “pure racism.”“I’m very proud that the Conservative Movement, to which I belong, has forged a strong relationship w/this community, including ordaining a rabbi & fighting for community’s rights in Israel,” she wrote in a tweet. “This is pure racism on the part of the state. The High Court must do the right thing.”Asked whether the decision had to do with race, Artson said he wasn’t sure what the “inner motivations” were of the ministry.“But it certainly has the appearance of racism,” he said.Blumenthal said the decision to reject Yosef’s claim would only further divide American Jews from Israel.“It’s one more example of a wedge that the Israeli government is driving between some in Israel and the Jewish people outside Israel,” he said.

New Facebook oversight panel orders banned posts restored; no decision on Trump-Committee overturns rulings in 4 out of 5 cases, including on nudity and claims COVID cure exists-By AFP-28 January 2021, 8:52 pm

WASHINGTON — Facebook’s new oversight board said Thursday in its first rulings that in four of five cases it had considered, the company was wrong to remove controversial posts from the platform. These did not include former US president Donald Trump’s indefinite suspension from Facebook and Instagram after the storming of the US Capitol, but the board said last week it agreed to consider that case. The Oversight Board said it was overturning the platform’s ruling in four of the five cases it looked at and ordering that the disputed content be restored to Facebook. These four included, for example, a post that asserted that France lacked a health care strategy and included claims that a cure for COVID-19 exists. This post was initially removed on grounds that it contributed to the “risk of imminent … physical harm.” But the review board said Facebook’s rule on misinformation and imminent harm was “inappropriately vague.”Another case involved nudity. An Instagram user in Brazil had posted pictures of women’s nipples as part of a breast cancer awareness message. It was removed, but the board said Thursday these five photos should be allowed in light of Facebook’s own policy exception for breast cancer awareness. The board said that since it started accepting cases in October of last year, more than 150,000 cases have been appealed to the panel.“As we cannot hear every appeal, we are prioritizing cases that have the potential to affect lots of users around the world, are of critical importance to public discourse or raise important questions about Facebook’s policies,” the board said in a statement.Facebook’s oversight board is tasked with making final decisions on appeals regarding what is removed or allowed to remain on the world’s biggest social network. It is considering cases involving Nazi propaganda, hate speech, nudity, pandemic misinformation, and dangerous individuals or organizations. The launch of the panel came late last year amid rising concerns about misinformation and manipulation around the US presidential election. The board was created at the urging of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg with the authority to overrule him and other top executives.Facebook has agreed to be bound by decisions on appeals, but rulings will only apply to cases at issue and will not set precedents.Members of the oversight board come from various countries and include jurists, human rights activists, journalists, a Nobel peace laureate and a former Danish prime minister.

Iran says it will install 1,000 centrifuges at nuclear plant in next 3 months-New equipment to be set up at Natanz enrichment plant; Iranian official says its scientists have exceeded expected output of enriched uranium-By TOI staff and Agencies-JAN 29,21-Today, 4:55 am

Iran said Thursday it plans to install 1,000 new centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear facility within three months and that its scientists had exceeded previous goals for uranium enrichment.Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, made the announcement about the centrifuges while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf visited the Fordo nuclear facility, an underground site near the city of Qom.Natanz is Iran’s main nuclear enrichment plant. An explosion at the site last year, which foreign media reports have attributed to Israel or the US, damaged an advanced centrifuge development and assembly plant.Qalibaf said during the visit that in less than a month, Iranian scientists made more than 17 kilograms (37.5 pounds) of 20% enriched uranium. Qalibaf’s speech and Kamalvandi’s comments about the centrifuges were broadcast by Iranian state media.Uranium enriched to 20% is a short technical step away from weapons-grade 90% enrichment. Western nations have criticized Iran’s enrichment activity and called on Tehran to adhere to its 2015 nuclear accord with world powers.Iran has said it would produce 120 kilograms (44 pounds) of 20% enriched uranium per year, or 12 kilograms per month on average, so 17 kilograms would exceed that timetable. The development brings Iran closer to crossing the line between nuclear operations with a potential civilian use, such as enriching nuclear fuel for power-generating reactors, and nuclear-weapons work, something Tehran has long denied ever carrying out.Roughly 250 kilograms (550 pounds) of 20% enriched uranium are needed to convert it into 25 kilograms of the 90% enriched needed for a nuclear weapon. The announcements came as tensions between Iran and the US remain high, with the top envoys from each country engaging in a war of words in recent days.Former US president Donald Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdrew America from Iran’s nuclear deal, in which Tehran had agreed to limit its uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. The US then ramped up sanctions and Iran gradually and publicly abandoned the deal’s limits on its nuclear development.US President Joe Biden, who was vice president when the deal was signed during the Obama administration, has said he hopes to return the US to the deal if Iran returns to compliance. The Biden administration’s policy on Iran is expected to be a point of contention between the new US administration and Israel.Israeli officials have voiced strong objections to the US rejoining the nuclear deal, and have also issued threats against Iran in recent weeks.IDF chief Aviv Kohavi issued a rare public criticism of the US plans on Tuesday and said that he had ordered the military to develop operational plans for striking Iran’s nuclear program.Iran’s aggressive moves in recent months were believed to be partially aimed at increasing its leverage ahead of negotiations with Biden. The Biden administration has pledged to consult with Israel and its other Middle East allies before making decisions regarding Iran.

Head of US military’s Central Command lands in Israel to meet with IDF top brass-Gen. McKenzie makes 1st visit since Pentagon announced Israel was moving under his purview; IDF chief Kohavi, who criticized Biden’s Iran plans this week, hails cooperation with US-By Judah Ari Gross-JAN 29,21-Today, 12:38 am

The head of the United States military’s Central Command landed in Tel Aviv on Thursday for a two-day visit, his first since the Pentagon announced that Israel was moving under his purview, the Israel Defense Forces said.Gen. Kenneth McKenzie was scheduled to meet with the IDF top brass on Friday to discuss the threats in the region that they will now work together to confront, specifically those posed by Iran, according to the IDF.“The military and strategic relations between the United States and Israel represent a critical component in the foundation of Israel’s national security and represent an advantage over our enemies. This cooperation has a key role in our dealing with shared threats, principally the Iranian threat,” Kohavi said in a statement upon McKenzie’s arrival.Kohavi’s praise for cooperation with the United States came days after he publicly condemned US President Joe Biden’s stated intention to rejoin the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying that such a move was “bad” and “not the right thing to do” and insinuating that if the White House went ahead with the plan, the IDF could take unilateral military action against Tehran to block its nuclear program.“At the focus of [McKenzie’s] visit is a strategic situational assessment with the chief of staff… alongside the advancement of regional partnerships against emerging threats,” the IDF said.McKenzie’s trip — his second as commander of CENTCOM — began with a short meeting with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi on Thursday night. The two planted a tree together in honor of the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat, the military said.On Friday, McKenzie was due to hold a roundtable discussion with several members of the IDF General Staff, including Kohavi, Deputy Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, Military Intelligence chief Tamir Hayman, IDF Defense Attache in Washington Yehuda Fuchs, and the head of a newly formed directorate specifically tasked with combatting Iran, Maj. Gen. Tal Kalman.Earlier this month, the US Department of Defense announced that Israel, which had been under the area of responsibility of the US military’s European Command (EUCOM), was being moved to the Central Command, which operates in the Middle East. This was meant to improve the cooperation between Israel and other countries in the region in confronting the threat posed by Tehran. The Jewish state had historically been kept out of CENTCOM out of concern that it could cause friction between the US and the other countries in the region, most of whom held a negative view of Israel. This was no longer true of some countries in the Middle East, particularly those in the Persian Gulf.Despite the announcement, Israel has not yet formally been transferred to CENTCOM’s area of responsibility.“The transition planning is underway, and a final timeline will be subject to approval by the new administration,” Pentagon spokesperson Cmdr. Jessica L. McNulty told The Times of Israel this week.“In the meantime, we expect continued cooperation between US, European Command and the Israel Defense Forces, and we expect more opportunities for cooperation between the Israel Defense Forces and US Central Command with additional partners,” she added.

Iraqi premier says top Islamic State figure killed by security forces-‘I gave my word to pursue Daesh terrorists, and we gave them a thundering response,’ Mustafa al-Kadhemi declares after IS Iraq governor Abu Yasser al-Issawi assassinated-By AFP-28 January 2021, 10:53 pm

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s premier announced Thursday that the military had killed a man identified as the top Islamic State (IS) group figure in the country, a week after an IS attack in Baghdad killed more than 30 people.Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi said IS’s Iraq “wali,” or governor, Abu Yasser al-Issawi, was killed in an “intelligence-led operation” by Iraqi security forces.“We promised and fulfilled. I gave my word to pursue Daesh (IS) terrorists, we gave them a thundering response,” Kadhemi wrote on Twitter.Iraq declared IS territorially defeated in late 2017 after a three-year fight aided by US-led coalition airstrikes and military advisors.Since then, IS attacks in urban areas have dramatically dropped, but Iraqi troops have continued to battle sleeper cells in the country’s mountainous and desert areas.Issawi, born Jabbar al-Issawi in Iraq’s western region of Fallujah, had been identified last year by top jihadism experts as the country’s most senior IS official.Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Khatami: “In a high-quality intelligence operation, we eliminated Abu Yasser Al-Issawi, #ISIS/#Daesh militants leader in #Iraq who is considered the deputy leader of the organization.” pic.twitter.com/K3Ps6jwOGY— Islamic World Update (@islamicworldupd) January 28, 2021-He rose to that rank after fighting with the jihadist faction in both Iraq and neighboring Syria, senior security sources told AFP.Issawi was killed on Wednesday in a remote swathe of Iraq’s northern Kirkuk province in an operation backed by the US-led coalition, the sources added.“The coalition carried out five air raids, killing at least 10 jihadists,” one of the sources said.A coalition spokesman did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment. The coalition has continued to provide training, surveillance and air support but has drawn down its numbers as Iraqi forces take the lead on operations. On January 21, two suicide bombers targeted a packed open-air market in Baghdad, killing at least 32 people and wounding more than 100 others. The attack was later claimed by IS.Iraqi and Western military sources described “gaps” in the security infrastructure that may have been exploited by the attackers.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Under new US leadership, UN chief sees `hope’ for Mideast peace progress-Without mentioning Trump explicitly, Guterres says that previously ‘we were completely locked down in a situation in which there was no progress visible’ By Agencies and TOI staff-JAN 29,21-Today, 8:48 am

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday “there are reasons to hope” for progress toward ending the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict after years of inaction. He said the United Nations will explore all initiatives to facilitate “a true peace process” based on the two-state solution.Clearly referring to the former US administration without naming then-president Donald Trump, the UN chief said “we were completely locked down in a situation in which there was no progress visible.”Guterres also made no mention of Tuesday’s announcement by US President Joe Biden’s administration that it was restoring relations with the Palestinians and renewing aid to Palestinian refugees, a reversal of Trump’s cutoff and a key element of its new support for a two-state solution. But the secretary-general made clear that Biden’s more even-handed approach opened the possibility of meetings of the Quartet of Middle East mediators — the US, UN, European Union and Russia — that were previously blocked, as well as broader peace efforts.“We have tried for a long time to make the Quartet meet, but we never had the agreement of all the members for that to be possible,” Guterres told a press conference. “And we have tried to have inclusive other formulas — possible of an enlarged Quartet with several other important players in the region, and unfortunately, this has not been possible until now.”“I think it became possible now,” he said, but stressed that a peace process can only be successful if it is based on a two-state solution and “all the international agreements that already exist in this regard.”Guterres expressed hope that elections “in the state of Palestine” and elections in Israel “will also contribute to create a positive environment for the future of the peace process… and for the rights of the Palestinian people, namely, its right to self-determination and its right to independence, to be fully respected.”The Palestinians have scheduled legislative elections on May 22 and presidential elections on July 31 and Israel will hold legislative elections on March 23.For more than three decades, the Palestinians have sought an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but imposed a crippling blockade when the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas seized power from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s forces in 2007. Israel says the blockade is necessary to limit Hamas’s ability to arm itself. Israel and Hamas have fought three major conflicts since 2008.There have been no substantive peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in years, and the two sides are fiercely divided over the core issues of the conflict. At Tuesday’s Security Council meeting, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki called for revival of the Quartet and reiterated Abbas’s call for an international peace conference “that can signal a turning point in this conflict.” He also expressed hope that “the US will play an important role in multilateral efforts for peace in the Middle East.”Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is convinced that the Quartet, working closely with both sides and Arab states, “can play a very, very effective role.”In support of Abbas’s call for an international conference, Lavrov proposed holding a ministerial meeting this spring or summer with the Quartet and Egypt, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain as well as Saudi Arabia to analyze the current situation and assist “in launching a dialogue” between Israeli’s and Palestinians.Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan said the government remains willing to make peace “when there is a willing partner,” but he accused Abbas of inciting violence. He said Abbas should come to the negotiating table “without making outrageous demands and not call for another pointless international conference.”Former president Donald Trump’s administration provided unprecedented support to Israel, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv, slashing financial assistance for the Palestinians and reversing course on the illegitimacy of Israeli settlements on land claimed by the Palestinians. The peace plan unveiled by Trump a year ago envisioned a disjointed Palestinian state that turned over key parts of the West Bank to Israel, siding with Israel on key contentious issues including borders and the status of Jerusalem and Jewish settlements. It was vehemently rejected by the Palestinians.
