News, Levin said that his “clear position is that the Nation of Israel has a clear right to the entire Land of Israel, and that position will never change.”However, he said, any “specific decision” regarding regulations “in one place or another” will be reached “with responsibility and forethought.” He added: “I am sure that these regulations will be such that on the one hand, guarantee the right of everyone to freedom of worship, and on the other hand, safeguard everyone's security.”Levin insisted that at present, MKs and Jews in general are allowed to ascend to the Temple Mount, and promised to maintain this situation. He did not mention the fact that Jews are, in fact, regularly prevented from entering the Temple Mount when police decide to block their entry for fear of Muslim violence, that they are forbidden from praying there, and that their tours of the Mount are accompanied by constant harassment from Muslims.The newly appointed minister said he would not continue to hold on to both the Tourism portfolio and the Internal Security portfolio for long, and would have to let one of them go. He called on former Interior Minister Gilad Erdan to join the government and accept the Internal Security portfolio that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu offered him, and that Levin is currently holding in his place.Levin noted that the Internal Security Ministry is the most important ministry that Netanyahu is currently allotting to Likud MKs, and that Erdan has no basis for feeling that Netanyahu slighted him by offering him that ministry.Erdan wanted to hold on to the Interior Ministry and unite it with the Internal Security Ministry, and claimed that he would not be able to push through the reforms he is planning unless he receives the double ministry. It should be noted that there is no law against Jews praying on the Temple Mount, and that police arrest Jews who do so on charges of “fomenting a riot” or “endangering the public welfare,” and the like.In appeals against arrests, Jewish groups have demanded that police produce an official list of behaviors that are acceptable and those that are not – a demand police have refused to comply with, even under court order.In a conversation with the students' group, police admitted that they have adopted the Arab rule about Jewish prayer on the Mount – even though an Israeli court has ruled that police have no right to do so, and that they must allow Jewish prayer, unless it causes an imminent riot.Police refused to budge on that point, but they did agree to produce a list of rules they expect visitors to the Mount to observe. A few days ago, before his deplorable meeting with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Vatican choose to recognize the “State of Palestine” in a historic move severely criticized by Israel. The Zionist Organization of America rightly condemned it as “the Pope recognizing Jew/Christian-Hating Palestinian State”.There is nothing new under the sun. Despite the fact that there are many Catholics around the world who share a pro-Israel attitude, the Catholic Church has always been at war with the Jewish State and did everything in its power to prevent its establishment and then to derail it.After the pro-Jewish Balfour Declaration of 1917, the Vatican’s opposition to Jewish territorial sovereignty grew more entrenched. In the years after the Holocaust, Vatican anti-Zionist policies attempted to block the partition of Palestine at the United Nations, and to secure Jerusalem as an international, sovereign “corpus separatum”, which was meant to prevent the Jews from setting a foot in the Old City of Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount.Two major cardinals were active in British Palestine in the first twenty years of the 20th century: the British Francis Bourne and the Italian Filippo Giustini. Cardinal Bourne in 1919 sent a letter to the then British government, writing that Zionism had not received the approval of the Vatican, and that if the Jews would “ever again dominate and rule the country, it would be an outrage to Christianity and its Divine founder”.Cardinal Giustini in that year cabled the Pope from Jerusalem asking for his intervention “to prevent the re-establishment of Zionist Israel in Palestine”. The new Minister of Internal Security and Tourism, Yariv Levin (Likud), dodged questions Monday about allowing Jewish Knesset members to ascend to the Temple Mount. Facing repeated queries by Walla! News, Levin said that his “clear position is that the Nation of Israel has a clear right to the entire Land of Israel, and that position will never change.”However, he said, any “specific decision” regarding regulations “in one place or another” will be reached “with responsibility and forethought.” He added: “I am sure that these regulations will be such that on the one hand, guarantee the right of everyone to freedom of worship, and on the other hand, safeguard everyone's security.”Levin insisted that at present, MKs and Jews in general are allowed to ascend to the Temple Mount, and promised to maintain this situation. He did not mention the fact that Jews are, in fact, regularly prevented from entering the Temple Mount when police decide to block their entry for fear of Muslim violence, that they are forbidden from praying there, and that their tours of the Mount are accompanied by constant harassment from Muslims.The newly appointed minister said he would not continue to hold on to both the Tourism portfolio and the Internal Security portfolio for long, and would have to let one of them go. He called on former Interior Minister Gilad Erdan to join the government and accept the Internal Security portfolio that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu offered him, and that Levin is currently holding in his place.Levin noted that the Internal Security Ministry is the most important ministry that Netanyahu is currently allotting to Likud MKs, and that Erdan has no basis for feeling that Netanyahu slighted him by offering him that ministry.Erdan wanted to hold on to the Interior Ministry and unite it with the Internal Security Ministry, and claimed that he would not be able to push through the reforms he is planning unless he receives the double ministry. With dozens of Jews arrested for “violating the rules” on visits to the Temple Mount, the Students for the Temple Mount organization had a simple question for police: Just what are the rules in the first place?The answer to that question has not been a simple one; police have often refused to say what is permitted and what is not, and often arrest Jews after much hectoring by Arabs, who accuse Jews of violating their “no Jewish prayer” rule. It should be noted that there is no law against Jews praying on the Temple Mount, and that police arrest Jews who do so on charges of “fomenting a riot” or “endangering the public welfare,” and the like.In appeals against arrests, Jewish groups have demanded that police produce an official list of behaviors that are acceptable and those that are not – a demand police have refused to comply with, even under court order.In a conversation with the students' group, police admitted that they have adopted the Arab rule about Jewish prayer on the Mount – even though an Israeli court has ruled that police have no right to do so, and that they must allow Jewish prayer, unless it causes an imminent riot.Police refused to budge on that point, but they did agree to produce a list of rules they expect visitors to the Mount to observe. Any Jewish visitor to the Mount will be able to request the list of rules, which will be provided on the spot, the police now promise.The students' group praised police for their change in attitude, saying that they hoped that “as a result, the arrest of Jews who have done nothing wrong and were unaware of the rules will be halted.”

Pope Francis's reference to Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as "an angel of peace" was meant as encouragement for him to pursue peace with Israel, the Vatican insisted Monday, after the words whipped up controversy on social media.The pope often presents heads of states with a large bronze medallion representing an "angel of peace", and did so when he met Abbas on Saturday, when he used the phrase in remarks addressed to the president, according to journalists present.His words - which came just days after the Vatican declared it was preparing to declare the PA a "state of Palestine" - were pounced on on social media amid accusations that AFP and other outlets mistranslated his words.As the head of Rome's Jewish community questioned why the pontiff would entrust the "angel of death" with bringing peace, some Twitter users pointed the finger at the media, with one wondering whether "it is the media and not the pope who called Abbas an angel of peace."Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi was unable to clarify, but said it was clear what the pope's meaning was, even if he could not verify his words, according to AFP."Each of us must be an angel of peace for others. I was present at the audience but I did not hear the pope's exact words," he said."The sense of encouragement seems clear to me, and this gift is presented to many presidents, not just Abbas," he said.Francis's original remarks appeared in the Italian-language newspaper La Stampa, which the English-language outlets in question translated as the pontiff calling Abbas outright an "angel of peace."But doubts were first cast on the accuracy of the translation by the Israellycool blog, which pointed out that the Italian was written in the exhortative (using the word "sia").Several Italian-language experts confirmed that to Arutz Sheva on Monday, saying that Francis actually told Abbas that he "may" or "could" be an "angel of peace," in an attempt to persuade him to return to peace talks with Israel.

A few days ago, before his deplorable meeting with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Vatican choose to recognize the “State of Palestine” in a historic move severely criticized by Israel. The Zionist Organization of America rightly condemned it as “the Pope recognizing Jew/Christian-Hating Palestinian State”.There is nothing new under the sun. Despite the fact that there are many Catholics around the world who share a pro-Israel attitude, the Catholic Church has always been at war with the Jewish State and did everything in its power to prevent its establishment and then to derail it.After the pro-Jewish Balfour Declaration of 1917, the Vatican’s opposition to Jewish territorial sovereignty grew more entrenched. In the years after the Holocaust, Vatican anti-Zionist policies attempted to block the partition of Palestine at the United Nations, and to secure Jerusalem as an international, sovereign “corpus separatum”, which was meant to prevent the Jews from setting a foot in the Old City of Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount.Two major cardinals were active in British Palestine in the first twenty years of the 20th century: the British Francis Bourne and the Italian Filippo Giustini. Cardinal Bourne in 1919 sent a letter to the then British government, writing that Zionism had not received the approval of the Vatican, and that if the Jews would “ever again dominate and rule the country, it would be an outrage to Christianity and its Divine founder”.Cardinal Giustini in that year cabled the Pope from Jerusalem asking for his intervention “to prevent the re-establishment of Zionist Israel in Palestine”. In another letter from Jerusalem, Cardinal Bourne defined Zionism as “contrary to Christian sensitivity and tradition”.“There was no real reason why the Jews should be back in Palestine. Why should not a nice place be found for them, for instance in South America?”.Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, who was Secretary of State under two Popes (Benedict XV and his successor Pius XI) said that “the most dangerous threat is the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine”. Gasparri claimed that, “It is better [to have] the internationalization of the Holy Sites rather than see Jerusalem in the hands of the Jews”. Then Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Luigi Barlassina, condemned the creation of an “autocratic Zionist domination” in many articles and dispatches to Rome.And during the ‘30s, while the Jews were under attack in Germany and Italy, Domenico Tardini, the Vatican Undersecretary of State, told a British diplomat in 1938: “There was no real reason why the Jews should be back in Palestine. Why should not a nice place be found for them, for instance in South America?”.The Vatican not only opposed the Balfour declaration at the League of Nations, it also endorsed the British “White Paper”, which fought the Jews’ right to immigrate to their Holy Land.Even Archbishop Angelo Roncalli, later to become Pope John XXIII and recognized by some Jews as a friend, wrote that he was “uneasy about the attempts of Jews to reach Palestine, as if they were trying to reconstruct a Jewish kingdom”.At the peak of the Holocaust, the Vatican’s main thought was to oppose the creation of a Jewish State, which if it would had been established before could have saved many Jews fleeing Hitler. Pope Pius XII made his opposition toward a Jewish homeland known to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Dated June 22, 1943, the letter sent by Amleto Cicognani, the Pope’s special representative to the US, to Ambassador Myron Taylor, Roosevelt’s emissary to Pius XII, made Pius’s policy against Zionism crystal clear.On 10 April 1945, while the war was still going on in Europe, Moshè Sharet of the Jewish Agency, was received by Pope Pius XII. He hoped for the “moral support” of the Catholic Church for “our renewed existence in Palestine”. But he did not receive any support; on the contrary the Vatican started a new campaign for “the internationalization of Jerusalem” supported by France, another name used to deprive the Jews of their homeland.Giorgio Hakim, then Catholic bishop of San Giovanni d’Acri, in 1947 delivered a letter by the Muftì of Jerusalem to the Pope in the Vatican — who had been an ally to Hitler in the “final solution” — against Israel’s projected establishment. Pius XII reacted “very cordially”. In 1948, when Israel was fighting six Arab armies which wanted to annihilate the tiny and fragile Jewish State, the Catholic press and the Vatican officials attempted to tie the Arab Christian refugee crisis into its general critique of “Israeli incursions” and “Jewish imperialism”.In 1949 the Italian embassy in the Vatican dispatched a message that the Holy See had the opinion that “the Israelis are using against the Arabs the same methods that the Nazis used against them”.I could go on with this list of Vatican’s attempts to derail the creation and survival of the State of Israel. Emanuel Ringelblum, the great historian of Polish Jewry who was killed during the Holocaust, noted that during the war “when the blood of Jewish students was shed and anti-Semitic savages rioted, the clergy either kept silent or approved these deeds...”.Those words, pronounced by a hero of the Warsaw ghetto, could be used also today for the Vatican’s indifference to Israel’s mortal siege. And just as it did in World War II, by choosing to recognize the “State of Palestine,” the Vatican made common cause with an evil Palestinian Arab Islamic power in a vain attempt to buy temporary security for their own communities.But despite these attempts, the Jewish people will grow in its land and city. All the land is theirs. Period.

Hours after a new Israeli government was sworn in, and amid international pressure to resume peace talks, Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Friday announced a new set of preconditions for the resumption of talks.“A return to the negotiating table requires three basic principles,” Abbas said, according to a Channel 2 News report. “A halt to settlement activities, a release of prisoners - and in particular the fourth batch of the prisoners who were sentenced before the Oslo Accords.”The third precondition, the report continued, is that the talks must not continue for more than a year.“The negotiations must continue for one year, and the result will be an end to the occupation by a period not to exceed the end of 2017,” demanded Abbas.This is certainly not the first time that the PA chief has imposed preconditions on talks with Israel, which has more than once agreed to Abbas’s preconditions only to have him pull out of talks or toughen his position altogether afterwards.The fourth batch of terrorists were to be released during the previous round of talks last year, but Israel cancelled this "gesture" after the PA requested to join 15 international agencies in breach of the conditions of the peace talks.Israel subsequently pulled out of the talks altogether, after the PA signed a unity pact with Hamas.Abbas has previously conditioned a return to talks on Israel releasing the fourth batch of terrorist prisoners and freezing construction in Judea and Samaria for three months.The international community, meanwhile, has been pressuring the sides to resume talks ever since the March elections in Israel.Earlier on Friday, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini announced she will visit the Middle East next week for talks on the peace process with both Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.(Arutz Sheva’s North American desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. Turkey has offered money to Hamas to re-build 19 mosques that were used to store or launch missiles on Israel before the IDF destroyed them in last summer’s Operation Protective Edge, Reshet Bet (Voice of Israel) radio reported Monday morning.Mehmet Gormez, president of Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs, is visiting Gaza for the first time in what may be a warm-up for a long-promised visit by Turkish President Recep Erdoğan-Gormez said everything Hamas and condemned Israel for “violating human rights” in Gaza by attacking missile-launching sites, many of which were located in mosques, schools, cemeteries and U.N.-financed buildings.The religious affairs official said:Israel used internationally banned weapons and violated religious and human rights.
