President offers condolences after Florida shooting-'The people of Israel stand with the people of Florida, and all America,' Reuven Rivlin writes-By TOI staff-FEB 15,18

President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday expressed condolences over a shooting rampage at a Florida high school, in which an ex-pupil opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, killing at least 17 people.“The people of #Israel stand with the people of #Florida, and all America, in grief this morning. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Rivlin wrote on his Twitter account.Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel identified the gunman as Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland who had been expelled for “disciplinary reasons.”He was arrested without incident in the nearby town of Coral Springs after the Valentine’s Day killing spree and taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the sheriff said. The shooting happened even though police officers were present at the school, NBC News reported.Pupils at the school have spoken about Cruz as a loner who enjoyed hunting and liked doing “reckless stuff.”Brandon Minoff, a senior at the school said he had two classes with Cruz two years ago. He told NBC News that while it was “surreal” to hear Cruz named as the suspect, “I wasn’t surprised.”“I got paired with him for a project, and he started talking to me about his life — how he was held back twice, expelled from two private schools. He likes to do reckless stuff,” Minoff said.“He had aspirations to join the military,” Minoff added. “He enjoyed hunting.”Sebastian Toala, another senior, told NBC Miami, “I never really got close to him, because I always had a feeling there was something wrong.”Parkland, in north Broward County, is some 30 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.Local 10 News, an ABC affiliate, named one of the dead students as Jaime Guttenberg, who was Jewish. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it did not know of any Israeli victims in the shooting.

Accused Florida high school gunman faces 17 murder counts-[Reuters]-By Bernie Woodall and Zachary Fagenson-YAHOONEWS-February 15, 2018

PARKLAND, Fla. (Reuters) - A 19-year-old man who had been expelled from his Florida high school was due in court on Thursday, charged with 17 counts of murder, after authorities say he unleashed one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. The ex-student, identified as Nikolas Cruz, 19, walked into the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Wednesday and opened fire on students and teachers, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Police believe he acted alone.Cruz was expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon for a bond hearing, faced with 17 counts of premeditated murder, said Constance Simmons, a spokeswoman for the state attorney's office.Cruz was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and had multiple ammunition magazines when he surrendered to officers in a nearby residential area, police said. He loved guns and was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons, police and former classmates said. The shooting in a community about 45 miles (72 km) north of Miami was the 18th in a U.S. school this year, according to gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety, continuing a troubling pattern that has played out over the past few years. It was the second deadliest shooting in a U.S. public school after the 2012 massacre of 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The deadliest school shooting in U.S. history was at Virginia Tech in 2007, when 32 people were killed. The Florida shooting stirred the long-simmering U.S. debate on the right to bear arms, which are protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.Schools across the country have installed electronically secured doors and added security staff, but few legislative solutions have emerged."So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior," U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter on Thursday. "Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!"Trump plans to address the nation from the White House at 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT), a spokeswoman said."There's more questions than answers," Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Paul Ryan, said in an interview with Indiana radio station WIBC. "I don't think that means you then roll that conversation into taking away citizens' rights."A law enforcement officer is assigned to every school in the Broward County district, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High board member Donna Korn told a local newspaper. The sheriff's office also provides active shooter training and schools have a single point of entry, she said."We have prepared the campuses, but sometimes people still find a way to let these horrific things happen," Korn said. The first victim of the attack was publicly identified on Thursday as Aaron Feis, an assistant coach on the school's football team and a school security guard who was shot while shielding students, the team said on Twitter.'THE WORST IN HUMANITY'-Hundreds of panicked students fled the building, running past heavily armed, helmeted police officers while others huddled in closets."This has been a day we’ve seen the worst in humanity," Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said Wednesday. The assailant wore a gas mask as he stalked into the school carrying a rifle, ammunition cartridges and smoke grenades, then pulled a fire alarm, prompting students and staff to pour from classrooms into hallways, according to Florida's two U.S. senators, who were brief by federal authorities.Cruz had recently moved in with another family after his mother's death in November, according to Jim Lewis, a lawyer representing the family and local media, bringing his AR-15 along with his other belongings. The family believed Cruz was depressed, but attributed that to his mother's death, not mental illness."They didn't see any danger. They didn't see any kind of predilection this was going to happen," Lewis told CNN.Cruz may have left warning signs on social media. Buzzfeed reported that a person named Nikolas Cruz left a comment under a YouTube video that read "I'm going to be a professional school shooter." The man who posted the video was alarmed and contacted the FBI, Buzzfeed reported.Reuters was unable to immediately confirm those details.Colton Haab, a 17-year-old member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at the high school, said he realized the alarms were not a drill after hearing several shots fired."That for me changed it to an active shooter scenario," he said. Haab rushed to his ROTC room and helped usher several dozen students inside, barricading them behind curtains made of Kevlar, a material used to make bullet-proof vests."We grabbed two pieces of two-by-four, a fire extinguisher and a chair," Haab said. "We were going to try to stop him with whatever we had."(Additional reporting by Zachary Fagenson in Parkland, Florida, Jonathan Allen in New York, Susan Heavey in Washington and Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Writing by Scott Malone; Editing by John Stonestreet and Jeffrey Benkoe)

Florida teen charged with 17 murder counts in school attack-Nikolas Cruz, an orphaned 19-year-old with a troubled past, opened fire inside his former school with a semi-automatic weapon-By AP and TOI staff-FEB 15,18

An orphaned 19-year-old with a troubled past and an AR-15 rifle was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder Thursday morning after being questioned for hours by state and federal authorities following the deadliest school shooting in the US in five years.Fifteen wounded survivors were hospitalized as bodies were recovered from inside and around Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.Just before the shooting broke out, some students thought they were having another fire drill.Such an exercise had forced them to leave their classrooms hours earlier. So when the alarm went off Wednesday afternoon shortly before they were to be dismissed, they once again filed out into the hallways. That’s when police say Nikolas Cruz, equipped with a gas mask, smoke grenades and multiple magazines of ammunition, opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, killing 17 people and sending hundreds of students fleeing into the streets. It was the nation’s deadliest school shooting since a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, more than five years ago.“Our district is in a tremendous state of grief and sorrow,” said Robert Runcie, superintendent of the school district in Parkland, about an hour’s drive north of Miami. “It is a horrible day for us.”Authorities offered no immediate details about Cruz or his possible motive, except to say that he had been kicked out of the high school, which has about 3,000 students. Students who knew him described a volatile teenager whose strange behavior had caused others to end friendships with him.Cruz’s mother Lynda Cruz died of pneumonia on November 1 neighbors, friends and family members said, according to the Sun Sentinel. Cruz and her husband, who died of a heart attack several years ago, adopted Nikolas and his biological brother, Zachary, after the couple moved from Long Island in New York to Broward County. The boys were left in the care of a family friend after their mother died, family member Barbara Kumbatovich, of Long Island, said.Student describes scene at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School— WSVN 7 News (@wsvn) February 14, 2018-Unhappy there, Nikolas Cruz asked to move in with a friend’s family in northwest Broward. The family agreed and Cruz moved in around Thanksgiving. According to the family’s lawyer, who did not identify them, they knew that Cruz owned the AR-15 but made him keep it locked up in a cabinet. He did have the key, however.Jim Lewis said the family is devastated and didn’t see this coming. They are cooperating with authorities, he said.Victoria Olvera, a 17-year-old junior at the school, said Cruz was expelled last school year because he got into a fight with his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend. She said he had been abusive to his girlfriend.“I think everyone had in their minds if anybody was going to do it, it was going to be him,” she said.Cruz was taken into custody without a fight about an hour after the shooting, in a residential neighborhood about a mile away. He had multiple magazines of ammunition, authorities said.“It’s catastrophic. There really are no words,” said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.Frantic parents rushed to the school to find SWAT team members and ambulances surrounding the huge campus and emergency workers who appeared to be treating the wounded on sidewalks. Students who hadn’t run began leaving in a single-file line with their hands over their heads as officers urged them to evacuate quickly.Hearing loud bangs as the shooter fired, many of the students inside hid under desks or in closets, and barricaded doors.“We were in the corner, away from the windows,” said freshman Max Charles, who said he heard five gunshots. “The teacher locked the door and turned off the light. I thought maybe I could die or something.”As he was leaving the building, he saw four dead students and one dead teacher. He said he was relieved when he finally found his mother.“I was happy that I was alive,” Max said. “She was crying when she saw me.”Noah Parness, a 17-year-old junior, said he and the other students calmly went outside to their fire-drill areas when he suddenly heard popping sounds.“We saw a bunch of teachers running down the stairway, and then everybody shifted and broke into a sprint,” Parness said. “I hopped a fence.”Most of the fatalities were inside the building, though some victims were found fatally shot outside, the sheriff said. The first fatality identified by local news outlets was Jewish teenager Jaime Guttenberg.Guttenberg’s friends were on Thursday leaving tributes on Facebook to say how heartbroken they were at her death.Posted by Jaime Guttenberg on Tuesday, 17 January 2017-According to local media reports, parents Fred and Jennifer initially shared photos of their daughter through Facebook in the hope that someone would find her alive. On learning that she had died, they changed Jaime’s Facebook page, which now reads, “Remembering Jaime Guttenberg. We hope that people who love Jaime will find comfort in visiting her profile to remember and celebrate her life.”Jaime’s brother Jesse, also a pupil at the school, was unharmed in the attack.Rabbi Bradd Boxman of Kol Tikvah, a Reform congregation in the town inland from Boca Raton, said he knew of at least four Jewish high school students among the wounded, including three from his congregation. They were in area hospitals and had undergone surgery.Yeshiva World News identified another Jewish victim, Ben Wikander, and said that he was undergoing surgery after being shot three times during the attack.Senator Bill Nelson told CNN that Cruz had pulled the fire alarm “so the kids would come pouring out of the classrooms into the hall.”“And there the carnage began,” said Nelson, who said he was briefed by the FBI.The scene was reminiscent of the Newtown attack, which shocked even a country numbed by the regularity of school shootings. The December 14, 2012, assault at Sandy Hook Elementary School killed 26 people: 20 first-graders and six staff members. The 20-year-old gunman, who also fatally shot his mother in her bed, then killed himself. Not long after Wednesday’s attack in Florida, Michael Nembhard was sitting in his garage on a cul-de-sac when he saw a young man in a burgundy shirt walking down the street. In an instant, a police cruiser pulled up, and officers jumped out with guns drawn.“All I heard was ‘Get on the ground! Get on the ground!'” Nembhard said. He said Cruz did as he was told. The school was to be closed for the rest of the week.

4 life sentences for terrorist who killed Salomon family of Halamish-Military court judges discuss death penalty for Omar al-Abed, but ultimately rule against it, call for 19-year-old 'not to be released in any future deal'-By Jacob Magid-TOI-FEB 15,18

The Judea Military Court handed down four life sentences Thursday to the terrorist who slaughtered Yosef, Chaya and Elad Salomon in the Halamish settlement last July.Nineteen-year-old Omar al-Abed was given one life sentence for each of the murders and an additional life sentence for the attempted murders of Yosef’s wife Tova, who was seriously wounded, and daughter-in-law Michal, who hid with her five children. In addition, Abed was ordered to pay NIS 2,550,000 ($724,634) in damages to the family within three years. The Salomons had been calling for the death penalty against al-Abed, and the judges in their ruling said that they had considered capital punishment.“We also discussed the maximum sentence — the death penalty. Words cannot describe the extent of the atrocity committed by the defendant,” the judges wrote. They went on to call for al-Abed “not to be released in any future deal.”In the minority opinion, Judge Dov Gilboa argued in favor of executing Abed, stating that “he enjoyed the whole trial with a smile.” The two other judges, Menachem Lieberman and Zvi Heilbronn, voted against capital punishment.Responding to Thursday’s sentence, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who had called for the death penalty for al-Abed, tweeted that “no number of life sentences is enough to punish this human being who still has a smile smeared on his face. My heart aches with the Salomon family.”After sneaking into Halamish late Friday night on July 21, Abed “noticed that the house to his right was dark and quiet, while the house to his left was lit up, with laughter emerging from within,” and decided to approach, the August indictment against him said. The Salomons were celebrating the birth of a new grandson and assumed the knock on the door came from their first guest. Upon walking inside, Abed rhetorically asked Chaya, “What about Al-Aqsa,” before thrusting his knife into her stomach. In a Facebook post published before he set out from the neighboring village of Kobar, Abed wrote that Palestinians needed to defend the Temple Mount. The previous day, heavy clashes broke out between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police in and around Jerusalem over new security measures at the Temple Mount, following a deadly terror attack at the site, which is holy to both Jews and Muslims. After killing Chaya, 46, Abed proceeded to stab Tova, 68, who managed to escape and run upstairs shouting, “Terrorist,” the indictment said.He went on to stab Yosef, 70, in the stomach, causing the latter to collapse to the floor. After sustaining three stab wounds, Elad managed to wrestle the knife from Abed’s hands. The two continued to fight until Abed grabbed a wooden cutting board and bashed it over Elad’s head, causing him to collapse. Abed then proceeded to stab the father of five 12 times as his children hid upstairs with his wife, Michal. Then, noticing that Yosef was still conscious, Abed stabbed the grandfather 15 more times until he too stopped moving. At that point, a neighbor, an off-duty soldier who heard the screams, managed to shoot and wound the terrorist through the kitchen window. He and his father secured the house and waited for security forces to arrive. In August, Israeli forces sealed with cement the floor of the Kobar home where Abed and his family had lived, but the Salomon family is petitioning the High Court for the entire home to be demolished.Israel says the demolishing of terrorists’ homes is an effective means of deterring future attacks, though the practice has been criticized as a form of collective punishment. After the partial demolition, Elad’s wife Michal said the measure was insufficient and called for harsher punishments for terrorists, including the death penalty.“Their house can be rebuilt; my home has been destroyed forever,” she said in a statement. “We need the death penalty so that these terrorists will not be able to build a new home, and if not the death penalty, then we need to seriously toughen their imprisonment conditions and withhold from them everything but the minimum, things like television or the possibility of education.”In December, when the Military Advocate General said he would not seek the death penalty against Abed, the Salomon family accused Liberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “toying with them” by making false pledges that they would advance legislation sanctioning the death penalty for terrorists.Despite the MAG’s recommendation of four life sentences, the Judea Military Court still could have handed down an execution verdict, but chose to side with the MAG in a 2-1 vote. The MAG, in his recommendation, acknowledged that capital punishment is permissible under law, but wrote that the measure was against the military’s policy.Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party made a death penalty a major campaign promise in the 2015 election. The legislation the party is currently advancing in the Knesset would apply to those convicted of fatal acts of terrorism, based on the Israeli legal definition. In light of the existing law, a Yisrael Beytenu spokesperson confirmed to The Times of Israel, the death penalty would extend to Palestinians convicted of killing IDF soldiers as well as civilians.Only one person has ever been sentenced to death by a standing Israeli court: Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann, one of the architects of the Holocaust.Though it has only ever been used in Eichmann’s case in 1962, the death penalty formally exists in Israeli law. It is technically allowed in cases of high treason, as well as in certain circumstances under the military law that applies within the IDF and in the West Bank.

Russian official: If Iran attacks Israel, we’ll stand with you-Moscow's deputy ambassador in Tel Aviv says while Israel was right to shoot down intruding drone, he doesn't buy IDF's assertion that Tehran was behind Saturday's launch-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-FEB 15,18

Were Iran to attack Israel, Moscow would stand by the Jewish state’s side, a Russian official said this week, days after an Iranian-made drone infiltrated Israel from Syria and was shot down by the IDF.“In the case of aggression against Israel, not only will the United States stand by Israel’s side — Russia, too, will be on Israel’s side,” Russian Deputy Ambassador to Israel Leonid Frolov said. “Many of our countrymen live here in Israel, and Israel in general is a friendly nation, and therefore we won’t allow any aggression against Israel.”Still, in a wide-ranging interview conducted at the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv on Monday, Frolov cast doubt on Israel’s assertion that Iran was behind the drone incursion and suggested Israeli intelligence agencies establish contacts with its Syrian counterparts. He also predicted that Israelis would not be happy about the forthcoming American peace plan, and dismissed the outrage against Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s condemnation of Israel as a European colonial project with no connection to Judaism.“We certainly support Israel’s right to defend itself, and the actions of Israeli pilots were entirely correct,” he said of Saturday’s flareup in the north, during which an Israeli fighter jet was shot down by a Syrian anti-aircraft battery and two pilots were injured.“We certainly regret that in this incident two Israeli pilots were injured,” Frolov said. “On behalf of the Russian embassy I am wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded pilots.”On Saturday morning, an Israeli Apache helicopter shot down the unmanned aerial vehicle a minute and a half after it had entered Israeli airspace. In retaliation for the infiltration, the Israeli Air Force attacked several targets in Syria, severely damaging the regime’s air defense systems.Russia is a staunch ally of both Iran and Syria, assisting both countries in their efforts to help the Syrian regime fend off rebels trying to bring down President Bashar Assad in a bloody seven-year civil war.“Syria is a sovereign country and the Syrian people, too, have the right to self-defense,” Frolov said.Israel has repeatedly vowed to do whatever it takes to prevent Iran’s efforts to entrench itself militarily in Syria. Jerusalem, which has reportedly attacked Iranian targets in Syria, and Moscow have established a so-called deconfliction mechanism to avoid clashes in the skies of the war-torn country.Israel’s demand that Iran not be allowed to establish a strong military presence in Syria is “absolutely legitimate,” Frolov said.Moscow agrees that Iranian forces must leave the country as soon as the bloody civil war ends and a new democratic government is established, he said. In the meantime, however, anti-regime rebels — or “terrorists,” as Frolov called them — are trying to destabilize Syria, prompting Assad to invite Iranian forces to help defeat them, he said. Russia is convinced that all foreign military personnel will leave the country once calm has been reestablished. In seeking to prevent Iran’s entrenchment in Syria, Israel should “have established closer ties with Syrian secret services,” he added. “Israel is surrounded by many enemy states. But that doesn’t prevent the Israeli leadership from announcing that their secret services have contacts with counterparts from Saudi Arabia or Qatar, for instance.”Part of the remains of the UAV the #Iranians tried to sneak into Israel. Not much left of it, similar to some parts of the #Syrian air defense array.— Jonathan Conricus (@LTCJonathan) February 11, 2018-Though he agreed that Israel was well within its rights to shoot done the drone, Frolov cast doubt on its assertion that Iran was behind the incursion. Rather, he suggested that anti-regime forces launched the drone in order to trigger an Israeli attack on the forces loyal to Assad.“I am sure that every UAV that intrudes into Israeli airspace needs to be shot down. It would be even better to bring down the UAV [without destroying it] and to see who created it, to whom it belongs,” he said, speaking in Russian through an interpreter. What would the Iranians gain from sending a UAV to Israel? After all, the Iranians know it would be shot down-“One can accuse the Iranians of many things, but they’re not stupid,” he went on. “They know what would happen if they sent a drone over to Israel. No one doubts that Israel has the capability to defeat Iranian military forces in Syria. But we don’t want to assume, without proof, that the Iranians in Syria are insane.”The IDF stated unequivocally that the drone — a replica of the American RQ-170 — was built and piloted by Iranian troops stationed in Syria. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Wednesday told the Security Council that “Iranian-backed militias” were behind the drone attack, which she described as an “egregious and unprompted escalation” and a “wake-up call for all of us.”But Frolov, a soft spoken, gray-haired veteran diplomat who previously served in Ramallah and the Libyan capital of Tripoli, adamantly disagreed with the Israeli assertion, saying that the photos of the destroyed drone published in Israel in no way proved that Iran has behind Saturday’s launch.“I don’t know who did it,” he said, adding that rebel groups are present in the location where the UAV was launched. “It would fit these gangs to make provocations in order for Israel to attack positions in Syria. We always need to ask ourselves who gains from this. What would the Iranians gain from sending a UAV into Israel? After all, the Iranians know it would be shut down and afterwards the Israelis would attack several targets in Syria.”Jerusalem usually updates Moscow before launching strikes in Syria, and therefore it was unlikely that any Russians were hit by Israel’s attacks on Saturday, Frolov said.Asked if Russia gives Israel the green light for those attacks, he replied, “I don’t think that Israel is the type of country that takes instructions or waits for green light from anyone.”While it was natural for President Vladimir Putin to demand that Israel not harm Russian servicemen, Frolov denied reports that the Kremlin relayed any threats to Jerusalem over that matter. “This is not our modus operandi,” he said.In the interview, granted to The Times of Israel on the occasion of Russian Diplomats Day last Saturday, Frolov also addressed at great length Kremlin’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “greatly disrupted the peace process,” he said, adding that he failed to understand why Israelis so jubilantly celebrated President Donald Trump’s December 6 declaration. Besides acknowledging the obvious — that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital — Trump also made plain that the final borders will be determined by negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.“You see in Trump’s declaration what you like. But the fact that the declaration disturbs the peace process doesn’t bother you. No one doubts that Israel’s capital will be in Jerusalem. We are simply saying that the Arab population that lives in the Palestinian territories also deserves a capital in this holy city,” he said.No one in Israel applauded when Moscow recognized western Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in April of 2017, Frolov noted, adding that the Russian Embassy in Israel was considering hosting its June 12 Russia Day ceremony in the city.Russia would like to play a more significant role in the peace process, Frolov said, acknowledging, however, that “without the US it’s impossible to reach agreements” between Israelis and Palestinians.“We remember the French effort to launch a peace conference and we also remember how it ended,” he said referring to a January 2017 meeting in Paris, which concluded with little more than a joint statement calling for a two-state solution. Abbas is simply looking for someone who will prevent President Trump from ruining the situation even more-Moscow would actually like the US to take a more active approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Frolov said, noting that after a year of the administration talking about a peace proposal nobody has seen a draft.“I don’t think that you will be as happy to see the proposal as you were happy to see the first sentence of Trump’s Jerusalem declaration,” he predicted, hinting that it may ask Israel for painful concessions.Despite the Palestinians’ rejection of the US as a mediator with Israel, Abbas, who visited Moscow this week, does not seek to exclude the administration from the peace process, the Russian diplomat said. “He is simply looking for someone who will prevent President Trump from ruining the situation even more. [Abbas] is an intelligent man who knows the history [of the peace process] very well.”Frolov also played down the Palestinian leader’s controversial January 14 speech to the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Central Council in Ramallah, in which he claimed that the State of Israel is “a colonial project that has nothing to do with Judaism” to safeguard European interests.“We’re not little children who get upset over statements made in anger and excitement,” Frolov said, adding that there are also Israelis who make outrageous and historically questionable statements. As opposed to some Arab states that used to finance wars against Israel but now clandestinely cooperate with the Jewish state, the Palestinians have for some time now been ready to “live in good neighborly relations with Israel,” he said.

Gaza’s only power plant shuts down over fuel shortage-Fears grow that closure of plant, which normally provides around a fifth of Gaza's electricity, will further worsen already critical humanitarian situation in enclave-By AFP-TOI-FEB 15,18

GAZA CITY — The sole electricity plant in the Gaza Strip stopped working Thursday because of a lack of fuel, officials said, as concerns grew over worsening humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian enclave. The closure of the plant, which normally provides around a fifth of Gaza’s electricity, will exacerbate an already critical power shortage.Gaza’s two million residents receive only around four hours of electricity a day.Mohammed Thabet, spokesman for Gaza’s energy distribution company, said it had been informed by the energy authority that the power station stopped functioning at midnight because of the lack of fuel.Usually the plant provides around 20 megawatts per day using fuel imported from Egypt, but now the only energy is the roughly 120 megawatts of electricity imported from Israel.“The Gaza Strip needs around 500 megawatts (per day). We have an energy deficit of 380 megawatts,” Thabet said. The distribution company called in a statement for rapid moves to provide fuel to the plant again.Last week, the United Arab Emirates provided financing for fuel for generators at hospitals and other key facilities. Three hospitals and 16 medical centers had stopped offering key services in recent weeks because of the crippling fuel shortages. The power station has temporarily shut down a number of times in recent years over energy shortages. It was hit by Israel in previous wars with Hamas, the terror group that runs the Palestinian territory.Israel has maintained a blockade on the Strip for a decade, saying it is essential to prevent terrorists from obtaining materials to fortify military positions, dig tunnels and build rockets to fire at the Jewish state, and Egypt has also largely closed its border in recent years. The Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, has also sought to squeeze rival Hamas.

Agents’ in Syria said to transfer fallen anti-aircraft rocket to Israel-Report says a Russian-made S-200 that landed on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights has made its way into Israeli hands-By Dov Lieber-TOI-FEB 15,18

Israeli “agents” in Syrian border villages reportedly handed over an anti-aircraft rocket fired by the Syrian military at IDF military jets on Saturday to Israeli security forces.A total of three Russian-made S-200 anti-aircraft missiles were found in non-Israeli territory after the Syrian military fired a barrage of rockets at Israeli jets that were striking both Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria, the al-Khaleej Online news site reported. The wave of Israeli airstrikes came after the IDF intercepted an Iranian drone that had infiltrated its airspace. During the first wave of strikes, an Israeli F-16 was downed upon its return from Syria. One of the rockets landed in northern Jordan, fragments of a rocket landed on the Lebanese-Syrian border, and fragments of a third rocket landed near Israel in the Syrian border villages Ain al-Tina and Qusaiba, the report said. The fragments that landed near the Israeli border were transferred into Israeli hands by what the report called Israeli “agents” in the area. The report sourced the information to unnamed local sources inside the Syrian border villages.Israel is known to have close cooperation with Syrians on its border, with whom it coordinates the transfer of humanitarian aid into the war-racked country.Additionally, it has been reported that Israel also provides direct financial support to Syrian opposition fighters. The policy, according to the reports, is aimed at strengthening Syrian rebel groups at the expense of forces hostile to Israel, namely Iranian proxy and Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, as well as various Iranian units fighting on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s behalf in Syria. While Israel acknowledges its humanitarian operations in southern Syria, it does not comment on whether there is military coordination with opposition groups.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia on Thursday defended the decision to allow a high-level Israeli delegation to attend a UN conference in Kuala Lumpur after the move sparked widespread anger in the Muslim-majority country.Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Malaysia, as host of last week’s international forum on urban development, had no choice but to allow all UN member states to take part.Malaysia has no formal diplomatic ties with Israel and many in the country support the Palestinian cause, with thousands taking to the streets in December to protest when US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital. The Israeli delegation at the conference was led by David Roet, who used to be Israel’s deputy ambassador to the UN, and included other senior foreign ministry officials and a former minister, the Times of Israel reported.Roet posted pictures of himself on Twitter at various locations around Kuala Lumpur and next to a Malaysian flag.“I have great hopes for good relations between our two countries in the future,” he said in a tweet.3. Australia bans sex between government ministers and staff-PM Turnbull amends code of conduct after his deputy makes 'a shocking error of judgement' by having an affair that left an aide pregnant-By Martin Parry-TOI-FEB 15,18

SYDNEY, Australia (AFP) — Australia’s prime minister imposed a formal ban on sex between ministers and their staff on Thursday after his deputy made “a shocking error of judgement” by having an affair that left an aide pregnant and the government reeling.Malcolm Turnbull announced the amendment to the ministerial code of conduct at an extraordinary press conference during which he slammed deputy Barnaby Joyce for causing “terrible hurt and humiliation” to his wife and four children.“Barnaby made a shocking error of judgement in having an affair with a young woman working in his office,” he said.“In doing so, he has set off a world of woe for those women and appalled all of us.“Our hearts go out to them. It has been a dreadful thing for them to go through in the glare of publicity.”Joyce, 50, has been under immense pressure since his affair with former media advisory Vikki Campion, 33, who is now pregnant with their child, became public last week.It has led to allegations that he breached ministerial rules, with the crisis dominating the front pages and parliament question time, with calls mounting for him to resign.Joyce, whose National Party is in a coalition with the prime minister’s Liberals, will take leave next week, allowing him to sidestep the role of acting leader while Turnbull is on a visit to the United States.Turnbull departs for Washington next Wednesday for meetings with US President Donald Trump and is scheduled to be overseas for four days.Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, as deputy Liberal leader, would normally step in if Joyce was unavailable. But she will also be traveling, which means Senate leader Mathias Cormann will take the position. The Prime Minister of Australia has had to introduce a #BonkBan into his Ministerial Code of Conduct. That tells you everything you need to know about the state of politics right now. #auspol— Farrah Tomazin (@FarrahTomazin) February 15, 2018-Turnbull said the break would allow Joyce to “consider his own position.”The prime minister could sack him, but that risks fracturing the ruling coalition and could cause a rift between the Liberal and National parties.-‘No good comes of it’-Joyce admitted to the affair after a picture of his pregnant lover was splashed across the front page of the Sydney Daily Telegraph, and has publicly apologized to his shattered wife of 24 years Natalie and their daughters.Turnbull said times had changed and people expected politicians to set an example.“I am not here to moralise. But we must recognise that whatever may have been acceptable or to which a blind eye was turned in the past, today, in 2018, it is not acceptable for a minister to have a sexual relationship with somebody who works for them,” he said.“It is a very bad workplace practice. And everybody knows that no good comes of it.”As such, he amended the code of conduct to make unequivocally clear that “ministers, regardless of whether they are married or single, must not engage in sexual relations with staff.”Public Service Announcement: You have until the end of the day to break up with your politician boss. Just a day after Valentine's too. #bonkban— Jen Dudley-Nicholson (@jendudley) February 15, 2018-Joyce — best known internationally for threatening to euthanise Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s dogs over a quarantine violation — denies he breached any rules, which could be grounds for him to be removed from office. He has defended the two jobs, one for a minister, that Campion was given after she stopped working for him last year. The code stipulates that “partners” of ministers cannot be given jobs in ministerial offices without the express approval of the prime minister.Joyce is also under fire over revelations that he accepted a rent-free apartment from a millionaire friend after his marriage collapsed.Labor accused him of breaching ministerial standards by asking for a place to live, and in effect receiving a gift of not paying rent for six months. Joyce insists it was offered and he did not ask for it.Remember. It's only a #bonkban if you are having sex with your staff. Sex with other ministers staff is perfectly okay #auspol— AshGhebranious (@AshGhebranious) February 15, 2018-Joyce was re-elected in his rural constituency in New South Wales late last year after being forced to stand down over a once-obscure rule barring dual citizens from federal office. He campaigned on a platform of being a pillar of the community who upheld conservative values, including marriage.

Head of Iran’s secret operations overseas threatens to ‘erase Zionist entity’-Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani calls for revenge on tenth anniversary of assassination of Hezbollah terror chief Imad Mughniyeh-By TOI staff-FEB 15,18

The senior Iranian responsible for coordinating military activity on behalf of the Islamic Republic in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq threatened Thursday to “wipe out” the State of Israel.Speaking at a Tehran ceremony to mark the tenth anniversary of the assassination — attributed to Israel’s Mossad and the CIA — of Imad Mughniyeh, the global operations chief of the Iranian-backed Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, al-Quds Force commander General Qassem Soleimani said that the punishment for shedding Mughniyeh’s blood would be to “wipe out the Zionist entity.”His call for revenge came in the wake of renewed tensions on the Israeli-Syrian border after an Iranian drone entered northern Israel from Syria on Saturday morning and was shot down by an attack helicopter. The Israeli air force retaliated against Iranian targets in Syria, but one Israeli fighter jet was downed by Syrian forces on its return to Israel, triggering a second round of Israeli strikes, specifically aimed at Syrian air defenses.Mughniyeh was killed in a car bomb explosion in Damascus on February 12, 2008. In 2015, his son Jihad, a Hezbollah commander, was assassinated in an airstrike that was also attributed to Israel.Soleimani, Iranian media reported, said Israel lived in palpable fear thanks to the work of Imad Mughniyeh and other “martyrs” in Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine. He also claimed that Mughniyeh was the one who “forced” Israel’s army to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000 and praised him for “fortifying the Gaza Strip,” where the terror group Hamas holds sway.Mughniyeh’s death shocked the world, he said, but “resulted in Islamic uprising” against Israel. Both Hezbollah and Hamas receive Iranian funding and support. The al-Quds Force is the branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards responsible for military and clandestine operations outside of the Islamic Republic.Israel has issued several stern warnings of late about the increased Iranian involvement along its border in Syria and Lebanon. On Wednesday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called Iran’s piloting of a drone into Israel a “wake-up call” to the world regarding Iranian efforts to cement its presence in Syria.“Iran and Hezbollah are making plans to stay in Syria,” she said.

Oman foreign minister makes rare visit by Arab official to Temple Mount-Israeli officials unaware of Jerusalem trip in which Yusuf bin Alawi, on 3-day visit to the Palestinian Authority, prayed in Dome of the Rock mosque-By AFP and TOI staff-FEB 15,18

Oman’s foreign minister made a rare visit by an Arab official to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount on Thursday after holding talks with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank.Yusuf bin Alawi toured the Temple Mount compound in the Old City of Jerusalem and prayed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the site.Alawi arrived in the West Bank on Tuesday for a three-day visit to the Palestinian Authority — an unusually long sojourn there by an Arab foreign minister. It was also the first visit by an Omani foreign minister to the West Bank, the Gulf news site AlKhaleej Online reported.Such a visit would usually require coordination with Israeli officials but an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said he was unaware of the visit and could not immediately comment. On Wednesday, Alawi visited the central West Bank city of Jericho, where he said the need for establishing a Palestine state was similar to the urgency felt to establish the State of Israel after the two world wars of the 20th century.“There was a global desire to establish Israel after the first and second world wars… Now the establishment of a Palestinian state has become a strategic necessity for all the world,” he said.He was slated to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday.Abbas and Alawi are expected to discuss ways to “confront” Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, according to the report. In a December address from the White House, Trump said his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government was merely based on reality, stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites. The move was hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum. It was vehemently opposed by the Palestinians and the wider Arab world. The Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state, have said Trump’s Jerusalem decision disqualifies Washington from its historic role as the sole mediator in the peace process. In January 1996, Israel and Oman signed an agreement on the reciprocal opening of trade representative offices. The agreement was suspended during the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000.Raphael Ahren contributed to this report.
