Iran jails man over ‘nuclear espionage’ for US, Europe-Suspect sentenced to 6 years for allegedly meeting with American intelligence agent nine times to relay sensitive information-By AP-FEB 5,18

Tehran’s prosecutor-general said a court has sentenced a suspect to six years in prison for relaying information on the country’s nuclear program to a US intelligence agent and a European country.Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told the judiciary website — Mizanonline.ir — that the convict allegedly met the agent nine times and provided him with information about “nuclear affairs and sanctions.”Dolatabadi added that he provided the information to a European country too.He said the court also ordered the confiscation of the money he received for the information. The report did not identify the convict or provide additional details.

Palestinian convicted of ‘nationalistic’ murder of pregnant Israeli lover-Nablus resident Muhammad Harouf says he strangled Michal Halimi last year in terror attack, not romantic dispute-By Tamar Pileggi-FEB 5,18

State prosecutors on Sunday convicted a Palestinian man who has confessed to murdering his pregnant Israeli lover “because she was a Jew.”The charge sheet was amended to reflect that Nablus resident Muhammad Harouf murdered Michal Halimi for “nationalistic reasons,” and not in a purely domestic dispute, as initially thought.Harouf was also charged with vehicular theft, criminal conspiracy, credit card fraud, and illegal entry into Israel. He is expected to get life in prison, despite signing a plea deal.State prosecutor Raed Anuz of the Tel Aviv District Attorney’s office described the murder as “shocking” during Sunday’s proceedings.“The defendant strangled Halimi when she was pregnant and dumped her body in the sand where she wasn’t found for two months,” he said.Halimi, a married resident of the West Bank settlement of Adam, was reported missing by her family last May.After an initial search, police determined that Halimi was romantically involved with Harouf and left her husband so the two could live together in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. When investigators learned the two had met up in Holon on the day of Halimi was last seen, police detained Harouf for questioning. He eventually confessed to strangling Halimi and led police to the crime scene.According to the revised indictment, Harouf had tried to persuade Halimi to come with him to Nablus. When she refused, he strangled her, and then bludgeoned her face in with cinder blocks before burying her nearby. He then stole her car and credit cards and fled to Taibe, according to the indictment. The car was later sold in the West Bank through an intermediary, the charges said. Harouf also unsuccessfully attempted to pull money out of Halimi’s bank account.Halimi’s body was uncovered in Holon’s Sand Dunes Park in late July, over two months after she was last seen alive. At the time of her murder, Halimi was eight months pregnant and married to an Israeli man named Aharon. It was not immediately clear who the baby’s father was.At his first court appearance in August last year, Harouf insisted his affair with Halimi was not the motivation for the murder, telling reporters he acted in order “to free [Palestinian] prisoners,” and yelled that he would “kill all the Jews.”After the details of the story emerged last year, Halimi’s widower, Aharon, denied his late wife was having an affair, and vowed to file a lawsuit against Israel Police for spreading false information about her.

Iran says US nuclear revamp proves need for own ‘defensive powers’-Tehran says Pentagon's plans to overhaul nuclear arsenal 'bring humanity closer to annihilation'-By AFP and TOI staff-FEB 5,18

TEHRAN, Iran — US plans to overhaul its nuclear arsenal threatens the world and shows American hypocrisy in trying to clamp down on Tehran’s arms programs, top Iranian officials charged over the weekend. On Saturday, Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the move brings humanity “closer to annihilation,” and on Sunday President Hassan Rouhani said it proved Iran’s own need for “defensive power.”On Friday, the Pentagon revealed plans to revamp its nuclear arsenal, largely in response to a perceived renewed threat from Russia.“You see the kind of insolent language Americans are using with Russia, threatening them with new nuclear weapons,” Rouhani said in a televised speech.“How can they then say this is a time of peace, brotherhood and coexistence, and we don’t need defensive power? We will always be in need of a defensive power.”The comment was an apparent reference to Iran’s claims that it needs to continue developing its ballistic missile program. The US and others have said that missile development is forbidden under the 2015 nuclear deal, which lifted some international sanctions in exchange for curbs to its nuclear program.US President Donald Trump has consistently attacked the accord and said in January he would not continue to waive sanctions unless new restrictions were placed on Iran’s missile program and wider actions in the Middle East. The other parties — Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China — as well as the European Union have strongly defended the deal, saying it has achieved its aim of limiting Iran’s ability to build a nuclear weapon.Zarif said the new US nuclear policy was “in violation” of the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).“The US Nuclear Posture Review reflects greater reliance on nukes in violation of the #NPT, bringing humankind closer to annihilation,” Zarif said on Twitter.Zarif said the same impulse was driving the United States to undermine the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.“Trump’s obduracy in killing the #JCPOA stems from the same dangerous imprudence,” Zarif wrote, using the technical name for the nuclear deal. The latest Nuclear Posture Review published by the Pentagon called for a larger arsenal of smaller, low-yield nuclear weapons to act as a more “credible” deterrent to threats, particularly from Russia. The NPT, which came into force in 1970 and has been signed by almost all countries including the United States, calls on nations “to achieve at the earliest possible date the cessation of the nuclear arms race and to undertake measures in the direction of nuclear disarmament.

Turkey warns US troops may be fired on as Syria offensive widens-Deputy Prime Minister Bozdag says American troops wearing uniforms of Washington-allied, Ankara-opposed Kurdish militias could be accidentally targeted-By AFP-TOI-FEB 5,18

ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkey on Sunday threatened to expand its operation against Kurdish militia fighters in Syria to the town of Manbij and even east of the Euphrates, warning that American soldiers risked being targeted in the area if they wore enemy uniforms.Turkey on January 20 launched the “Olive Branch” operation in the northern Syrian region of Afrin, fighting Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia which Ankara sees as a terror group. With the YPG a key ally of Washington in the battle against jihadists, the campaign has seen a fellow NATO partner of the United States fighting an openly US-backed and US-armed force.Beyond the northwestern enclave of Afrin, the YPG also controls the key strategic town of Manbij to the east and a long strip of territory east of the Euphrates up to the Iraqi border.“If they (the YPG) do not withdraw from Manbij, then we will go to Manbij, we will go east of the Euphrates,” Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag told CNN-Turk.American troops have no presence in and around Afrin but they are present in Manbij and east of the Euphrates, where they have assisted the YPG in the fight against IS.Bozdag emphasized that Turkey wanted no confrontation with American troops but said US soldiers risked being caught up in clashes if they appeared in uniforms of the YPG.This appeared to be a reference to past images of American troops in northern Syria showing them with YPG insignia.“We do not at all want any clash with the US in Manbij, east of the Euphrates or in any other place,” said Bozdag.“But the US has to be aware of Turkey’s sensitivities. If US soldiers wear terrorist uniforms or are among the terrorists in the event of an attack against the army then there is not going to be the chance to make a distinction,” he said.“If they come up against us in such a uniform we will see them as… terrorists.”There have been heavy clashes with the YPG in the Afrin campaign so far and Bozdag was speaking after seven Turkish troops were killed on Saturday, including five in a tank attack, the heaviest single day loss of the campaign so far.Pro-government Turkish media said the tank attack was carried out with an anti-tank missile given to the YPG by the US, but this has yet to be confirmed.“The supposed ally the United States knows no limit in treachery,” said the Yeni Akit daily.

Minister claims mystery ‘prince of Bahrain’ is visiting Israel-Ayoub Kara says he discussed ties with the tiny Gulf nation during meeting in Tel Aviv, but Foreign Ministry says it has no knowledge of the royal visit-By Raoul Wootliff-TOI-FEB 5,18

Communications Minister Ayoub Kara claimed Sunday that he had met with a Bahraini prince visiting Israel, that the two had discussed regional developments, and that he planned to bring the royal to the Knesset.“I met publicly for the first time in Tel Aviv with Mubarak Al Khalifa, the prince of Bahrain, in order to strengthen the relationship between our two countries,” Kara wrote in a tweet boasting of the meeting as a sign of growing relations between Israel and Bahrain.“On Monday I will also have the honor of welcoming him to Israel’s Knesset,” he added, above a photo of the apparent royal guest grinning next to Kara.An official visit to Israel by a member of the Bahraini royal family, and all the more so a visit to the Israeli parliament, would indeed signify a major step in the gently warming ties between Israel and Bahrain and perhaps even suggest a turning point in the Jewish state’s relations with the wider Arab world. But in an apparent blunder, Kara seems to have hugely overstated the prominence of his guest and the visit’s diplomatic importance.Israel’s Foreign Ministry told The Times of Israel it had no knowledge of any Bahraini visit to the country, nor could it confirm the royal status of Kara’s photogenic guest. Likewise, neither the Knesset spokesman or the office of Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein said they were aware of a visit to the parliament by a Bahraini official. Such visits usually involve extensive planning and coordination between Israeli officials and foreign delegations.Usually keen to speak to the press, Kara declined numerous requests to comment on the visit or give any further details about his meeting. While Kara claims to have met with “the prince of Bahrain,” the country’s crown prince — the eldest son of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa — is Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and bears no resemblance to the “Mubarak Al Khalifa” named in Kara’s tweet. In fact, Bahraini government and royal websites include no mention of any living member of the royal family who goes by the name Mubarak Al Khalifa. While Mohammad bin Mubarak Al Khalifa is currently the country’s deputy prime minister, having served as Bahrain’s foreign minister from 1970 to 2005 and currently at 82 years of age, he too does not match the image of the man in Kara’s tweet.According to the Kan public broadcaster, the man in the tweet told the news station that he was a distant member of the Bahraini royal family currently living in London and was visiting Israel on a “private trip” to see friends. He said that Bahraini officials had attempted to prevent him from coming to the country and that he had received death threats over his travel plans, the report said.It appears that the mysterious visitor may be the man known as Mubarak Hamad, a far-flung Bahraini royal who in 2012 was charged with being drunk and disorderly on an aircraft after he was removed from a British Airways flight from London to Bahrain before takeoff for shouting and complaining about poor service. This is not the first time Kara has raised diplomatic eyebrows, particularly for failing to coordinate meetings with foreign officials with the Israeli authorities. Two months ago it was reported that Kara had brought along a number of personal associates and real estate brokers on an official trip to Ethiopia in April without government authorization. And in June, Kara drew Morocco’s wrath after posting a photo of himself meeting Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the prime minister of the Sahrawi Republic of southern Morocco, at the swearing-in ceremony of Ecuador’s newly elected president. Morocco, sending a message via an Israeli embassy in Europe, protested the meeting between Kara and Taleb Omar, saying it could not tolerate such support of its neighbor-rival.The communications minister has also landed himself in hot water for a number of controversial public statements. In February 2017, Kara was ridiculed for saying that Israel would soon be able to deploy terminator robots — indestructible because they would be built of “special material” — that would be able to enter enemy territory and kill the leaders of terror groups without putting soldiers in harm’s way.Just two months prior, he had posted to his Facebook page details of a security-related incident involving the Jewish state, all elements of which are still under a gag order. The post was quickly taken down, but not before journalists and others saw the information. And a month before that, Kara drew condemnation from the Foreign Ministry when, during a visit to Italy, he suggested that powerful earthquakes in that country were divine retribution for anti-Israel actions in the United Nations.

Israel has imposed severe restrictions on Palestinian development in this area, home to dozens of Israeli settlements. The EU funds the construction of many homes, schools and other structures in the area and says the projects are needed for humanitarian reasons and economic development.Israel says that any assistance to Palestinians in Area C must be coordinated with authorities.— AP-6:21 pm-Netanyahu accuses New Israel Fund of funding protests against deporting migrants-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuses the New Israel Fund of funding protests against the deportation of African migrants from the country.“This won’t help you. Why is this good?” the report quotes Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel as saying during the meeting, which was attended by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. The TV station reports Ariel then addressed Eisenkot directly, saying: “Check the number of articles on these things and see if I’m right or not and if this suits you.”The report says a number of ministers came to Eisenkot’s defense, including Naftali Bennett, Ofir Akunis and Miri Regev, and that Eisenkot vowed the army would not change its policy regarding service for women and homosexuals.5:47 pm-Iraq releases names of its 60 most wanted; Islamic State head not on list-BAGHDAD — Iraqi security services on Sunday publish the names of 60 people wanted on suspicion of belonging to the Islamic State terror group, Al-Qaeda or the Baath Party of late dictator Saddam Hussein. The list, seen by AFP, includes the name of Saddam’s daughter Raghad, who lives in Jordan. It also features 28 suspected IS jihadists, 12 from Al-Qaeda and 20 Baathists, giving details of the roles they allegedly play in their organizations, crimes of which they are suspected and in most cases, photographs. All are Iraqis apart from Maan Bashour, a Lebanese man accused of recruiting fellow citizens to fight in Iraq. The name of elusive IS head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is absent from the list. But Priebus pushes back against a New York Times report that Trump ordered that Mueller be fired last June but backed off after the top White House lawyer threatened to resign.Trump fired Priebus at the end of July.Priebus says he never heard “the idea or the concept” that Mueller needed to be fired.
