It gave no indication whether Beijing might retaliate for the charges against Huawei, China’s first global tech brand and the biggest maker of switching gear for phone and internet companies.Huawei Technologies Ltd., which has spent a decade battling US accusations it is a front for Chinese spying, denied committing any of the violations cited in Monday’s indictment.The foreign ministry complained Washington has “mobilized state power” to hurt Chinese companies “in an attempt to strangle fair and just operations.”“We strongly urge the United States to stop the unreasonable crackdown on Chinese companies including Huawei,” said the statement read on state TV. It said Beijing will defend the “lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies” but gave no details.The charges unsealed Monday by the Justice Department accused Huawei of trying to take a piece of a robot and other technology from a T-Mobile lab that was used to test smartphones. Israeli authorities have yet to gather testimony from residents of a West Bank village that saw a deadly altercation over the weekend, as officials investigate conflicting accounts over what led to the shooting death of a Palestinian man.The mayor of al-Mughayyir and a relative of Hamdi Na’asan, who was killed in the Saturday clash, both told the Times of Israel on Tuesday that they have yet to hear from the army or police who are separately probing the incident.A police spokeswoman said the investigation is still ongoing but declined to comment further.“Neither the police nor the army has come to take testimony from us at all,” said the deceased’s uncle Faraj Na’asan. “I was an eyewitness. I saw what happened there.”Al-Mughayyir Mayor Amin Abu Alia said that authorities did come to the scene of the clash on Monday to collect evidence — including bullet shells from the live fire shot at Palestinians — but the visit did not include speaking to the locals who were present during the clash.There are conflicting claims as to how the deadly incident unfolded. Local Palestinians say the settlers fatally shot Nassan during an altercation, but residents of the neighboring Adei Ad outpost claim their security guards fired shots in the air to chase away Palestinians attackers who stabbed a Jewish teen.The Israel Defense Forces said initial indications were that a settler from Adei Ad had a “physical confrontation” with several Palestinians and was slightly hurt.“Shortly thereafter, a conflict erupted between Israeli civilians and Palestinians in the area, in which live rounds were fired by the civilians,” the IDF said in a statement. “One Palestinian died and several others are injured.”It said that troops and border police responding to the altercation used “riot dispersal means” to break up the disturbance, not live ammunition.However, Abu Alia and Faraj Nassan said they saw soldiers firing at Palestinians along with settlers.“They were standing on a hill together. JTA — Anti-Israel protesters took the stage unannounced at Creating Change, an LGBTQ conference that was the site of a raucous anti-Israel protest in 2016.At the opening of this year’s conference, organized by the National LGBTQ Task Force, a group of activists holding Palestinian flags took the stage and led a 13-minute protest for Palestinian liberation and against Zionism. The speakers were not interrupted or asked to leave by the event organizers.JTA obtained video of the event, at which speakers led chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “From Palestine to Mexico, all the walls have got to go.”The conference took place January 23-27 in Detroit.The first speaker of the protest, who did not give their name, charged that the conference did not include pro-Palestinian programming because it could upset donors. The speaker invoked Rep. WASHINGTON (AP) — In an assessment casting doubt on US President Donald Trump’s goal of a nuclear-disarmed North Korea, US intelligence agencies told Congress on Tuesday that the North is unlikely to entirely dismantle its nuclear arsenal.Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, noted that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed support for ridding the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons and has not recently test-fired a nuclear-capable missile or conducted a nuclear test.“Having said that, we currently assess that North Korea will seek to retain its WMD [weapons of mass destruction] capabilities and is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capability because its leaders ultimately view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival,” Coats said in an opening statement.This skepticism about North Korea is consistent with the intelligence agencies’ views over many years and runs counter to Trump’s assertion after his 2018 Singapore summit with Kim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat. (Reuters) - The FBI has found no clear motive for the killing of 58 people by a sniper firing down at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas in 2017, the agency said on Tuesday as it closed an investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.According to an FBI report, the 64-year-old gunman, Stephen Paddock, was not unlike many other mass shooters who are driven by a complex mix of issues, ranging from mental health to stress, and want to die by suicide.The report also found no evidence that any ideological or political beliefs motivated Paddock, who also wounded more than 800 in the shooting rampage on Oct. 1, 2017."There was no single or clear motivating factor behind Paddock's attack," the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit said, echoing a report issued by Las Vegas police in August.Paddock acted alone when he planned and carried out the attack, firing more than 1,000 rounds during 11 minutes from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. It gave no indication whether Beijing might retaliate for the charges against Huawei, China’s first global tech brand and the biggest maker of switching gear for phone and internet companies.Huawei Technologies Ltd., which has spent a decade battling US accusations it is a front for Chinese spying, denied committing any of the violations cited in Monday’s indictment.The foreign ministry complained Washington has “mobilized state power” to hurt Chinese companies “in an attempt to strangle fair and just operations.”“We strongly urge the United States to stop the unreasonable crackdown on Chinese companies including Huawei,” said the statement read on state TV. Israeli authorities have yet to gather testimony from residents of a West Bank village that saw a deadly altercation over the weekend, as officials investigate conflicting accounts over what led to the shooting death of a Palestinian man.The mayor of al-Mughayyir and a relative of Hamdi Na’asan, who was killed in the Saturday clash, both told the Times of Israel on Tuesday that they have yet to hear from the army or police who are separately probing the incident.A police spokeswoman said the investigation is still ongoing but declined to comment further.“Neither the police nor the army has come to take testimony from us at all,” said the deceased’s uncle Faraj Na’asan. “I was an eyewitness. I saw what happened there.”Al-Mughayyir Mayor Amin Abu Alia said that authorities did come to the scene of the clash on Monday to collect evidence — including bullet shells from the live fire shot at Palestinians — but the visit did not include speaking to the locals who were present during the clash.There are conflicting claims as to how the deadly incident unfolded. JTA — Anti-Israel protesters took the stage unannounced at Creating Change, an LGBTQ conference that was the site of a raucous anti-Israel protest in 2016.At the opening of this year’s conference, organized by the National LGBTQ Task Force, a group of activists holding Palestinian flags took the stage and led a 13-minute protest for Palestinian liberation and against Zionism. The speakers were not interrupted or asked to leave by the event organizers.JTA obtained video of the event, at which speakers led chants of “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “From Palestine to Mexico, all the walls have got to go.”The conference took place January 23-27 in Detroit.The first speaker of the protest, who did not give their name, charged that the conference did not include pro-Palestinian programming because it could upset donors. The speaker invoked Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the Michigan Democrat who is the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress.“In a state that elected the first Palestinian woman to the U.S. Congress, there is still a ban on Palestine at Creating Change, because the Task Force is afraid that people are going to come here to seek their full liberation, and donors might get mad,” the speaker said. “Right now, our content is being censored, our liberation is being silenced and our voices are being shut down because the Task Force is too cowardly to have a conversation on one of the leading social justice issues of our time: Palestinian freedom.”The second speaker of the protest, Mina Aria, called on the Task Force to fight “pinkwashing, Zionism, Islamophobia and colonial violence.” Pinkwashing is a term that connotes what critics see as Israel’s covering up of human rights abuses by trumpeting its LGBTQ-friendly policies.The protest this year recalled a similar one at the same conference in 2016, when pro-Palestinian activists tried to disrupt a Shabbat service hosted by A Wider Bridge, a pro-Israel LGBTQ group that also advocates for LGBTQ rights within Israel. (Reuters) - The FBI has found no clear motive for the killing of 58 people by a sniper firing down at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas in 2017, the agency said on Tuesday as it closed an investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.According to an FBI report, the 64-year-old gunman, Stephen Paddock, was not unlike many other mass shooters who are driven by a complex mix of issues, ranging from mental health to stress, and want to die by suicide.The report also found no evidence that any ideological or political beliefs motivated Paddock, who also wounded more than 800 in the shooting rampage on Oct. 1, 2017."There was no single or clear motivating factor behind Paddock's attack," the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit said, echoing a report issued by Las Vegas police in August.Paddock acted alone when he planned and carried out the attack, firing more than 1,000 rounds during 11 minutes from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon ruled out supporting a two-solution to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, moments after his new political partner Benny Gantz said Tuesday he would push for peace if elected prime minister.Asked by The Times of Israel Tuesday evening if he would support a peace deal based on the premise of two states for two peoples, Ya’alon replied “of course not.”Ya’alon, a former member of the right-wing Likud party, has long held hawkish views toward the Palestinians and, as Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, he opposed the 2005 Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip.In 2014, he was quoted as criticizing US secretary of state John Kerry as “obsessive” and “messianic,” for his efforts to broker a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. He later apologized.Ya’alon earlier this month formed the Telem Party, which on Tuesday officially teamed up with Gantz’s Israel Resilience to run on a joint electoral slate in Knesset elections on April 9.The two made the announcement during a rally for Israel Resilience in Tel Aviv, where Gantz officially kicked off his election campaign with his first political speech.Though he did not endorse a two-state solution, Gantz stressed in his speech that he would try to reach an agreement with the Palestinians.“I know that we need something different, we can have something different. A government I lead will seek peace and won’t miss an opportunity for a regional change,” he said, before praising past Israeli leaders who reached peace agreements with Arab states and the Palestinians.But if such an opportunity does not appear, Gantz said, “we will create a new reality.”“We will fortify Israel’s position as a democratic state, strengthen the settlement blocs and Golan [Heights], where we won’t leave ever. The Jordan Valley will be our border, but we won’t let millions of Palestinians living beyond the fence to endanger our identity as a Jewish state,” he said, seemingly ruling out a one-state formula.Gantz has also emphasized the importance he places on peace in past remarks, including reportedly telling a group of Mexican Jews last year that reaching an agreement with the Palestinians should be Israel’s top priority.
