Trump says Netanyahu election win means a ‘better chance for peace’-‘I think we’ll see some pretty good actions in terms of peace,’ US president says, as congratulations pour in for PM from right-wing world leaders-By TOI staff-APR 10,19

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his win in the Israeli election, and said it would improve the chances of success for his administration’s much-anticipated peace plan.“I think we have a better chance now that Bibi has won,” Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn before heading to Texas, using Netanyahu’s nickname. “The fact that Bibi has won, I think we’ll see some pretty good actions in terms of peace.”“Everybody said you can’t have peace in the Middle East with Israel and Palestinians. I think we have a chance and I think we now have a better chance,” the US president added. The White House has said it would release its peace proposal following the elections in Israel, though a report on Israeli television earlier this week said the exact timing would be dependent on the outcome of the vote.Trump flags being waived at the Bibi @Netanyahu VICTORY celebration last night!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 10, 2019-With over 97 percent of ballots counted, and his Likud party and fellow right-wing and religious parties poised to secure a clear majority of Knesset seats, Netanyahu emerged from Tuesday’s elections in the best position to muster a coalition.“I’d like to congratulate Bibi Netanyahu. It looks like that race has been won by him. It may be a little early but I’m hearing he’s won it and won it in good fashion,” Trump said.Calling Netanyahu a “great ally” and a “friend,” Trump said the Israeli elections were “a well fought out race.”The comments from Trump came as a steady stream of congratulations from largely right-wing world leaders poured in following Netanyahu’s success. The first message came from Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who praised Netanyahu for “once again” gaining “the trust of the people of #Israel in record numbers.”“Congratulations to Prime Minister @netanyahu for an excellent showing in yesterday’s national elections,” he tweeted.“While the official results have yet not been published, one matter is clear: you have – once again – gained the trust of the people of #Israel in record numbers.”Congratulations to Prime Minister @netanyahu for an excellent showing in yesterday's national elections. Netanyahu poised for 5th term as Israel PM as rival concedes-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-ILAN BEN ZION-April 10, 2019

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main rival conceded defeat Wednesday, promising to wage a robust battle from the opposition after the ruling Likud party and its nationalist allies won a solid majority in parliamentary elections.Netanyahu appeared poised for a historic fifth term as prime minister with nearly all the ballots counted from Tuesday's vote. Official final results were expected Thursday. With 97.4% of the vote counted, Netanyahu's Likud and the rival Blue and White were deadlocked with a projected 35 seats apiece in the 120-seat parliament. But Likud and its traditional political allies were in command of a 65-55 majority in the Knesset, Israel's parliament.A couple of small parties were still teetering on the electoral threshold and fighting for survival, so the final makeup of the next parliament could still change slightly.Blue and White, led by former military chief of staff Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid, a former Netanyahu Cabinet minister, got about 26% of the vote — a shade less than Netanyahu's Likud.Lapid, the party's No. 2 leader, said Blue and White would "show the people of Israel what a real alternative looks like.""We did not win in this round. I respect the voters, and I respect their decision, but I look around and see the ultimate tool for victory in the next round," Lapid said at a news conference alongside Gantz and two other former military chiefs who led Blue and White. The outcome affirmed Israel's continued tilt to the right and further dimmed hopes of a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Re-election will also give Netanyahu an important boost as he braces for the likelihood of criminal charges in a series of corruption scandals.Lapid vowed that Blue and White would "embitter the lives" of Netanyahu and his allies from the opposition, and push for investigations into other allegations of corruption by the long-reigning premier."We are going to turn the Knesset into a battleground," Lapid said. Two of Netanyahu's potential allies, hawkish former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and economic-centric Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, have yet to formally confirm they would sit with Netanyahu and could emerge as wild cards. In any case, the country faces what could be weeks of political negotiations over the composition of a ruling coalition. But under nearly every scenario, Netanyahu was the big winner. He had fought a tight, ugly race against Gantz, whose new party emerged as a viable alternative to Netanyahu's decade in power. But most of its support seems to have come at the expense of the venerable Labor and leftist Meretz parties, which both earned historic lows in the election.Gantz, who had declared victory on election night, said Wednesday his party would "respect the decision of the people and we will respect the decision of the president."The spotlight now falls on President Reuven Rivlin, who will consult with party representatives next week before picking the candidate with the best chance of assembling a parliamentary majority.Together with his current Jewish ultra-Orthodox and nationalist partners, Netanyahu seemed to have a clear path toward building a coalition government that has a majority in parliament.Rivlin said that for the first time, his discussions with party leaders would be broadcast on live television "in the name of transparency."With a victory, Netanyahu would capture a fourth consecutive term and fifth overall, which this summer will make him Israel's longest-ever serving leader, surpassing founding father David Ben-Gurion."It's a night of tremendous victory," Netanyahu told supporters early Wednesday, adding that he had already begun talking to fellow right-wing and religious parties about forming a coalition.Netanyahu's message of unity contrasted with his campaign theme in which he accused Gantz of conspiring with Arab parties to topple him. Arab leaders accused Netanyahu of demonizing the country's Arab community, which is about 20% of the population. His attacks on the Arab sector fueled calls for a boycott and appeared to result in relatively low turnout by Arab voters.Though the Palestinian issue was rarely mentioned in the raucous campaign, Netanyahu in the final stretch pledged for the first time to annex parts of the occupied West Bank in a desperate bid to rally his right-wing base. Netanyahu has reneged on election eve promises before, but should he follow through on this one, it would mark a dramatic development and potentially wipe out the already diminishing hope for Palestinian statehood.Ahmed Majdalani, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the Palestinians will seek the help of the international community to try to block any such plans. He said that the outcome of the election means a boost for what he called the "extreme right-wing camp" in Israeli politics.Hanan Ashrawi, a senior Palestinian official, said Israel chose to entrench "the status quo of oppression, occupation, annexation and dispossession."The 69-year-old Netanyahu has been the dominant force in Israeli politics for the past two decades. His campaign has focused heavily on his friendship with President Donald Trump and his success in cultivating new allies, such as China, India and Brazil. But his corruption scandals created some voter fatigue. Gantz was able to challenge Netanyahu on security issues, normally the prime minister's strong suit, while also taking aim at his alleged ethical lapses.Israel's attorney general has recommended charging Netanyahu with bribery, breach of trust and fraud in three cases, and a potential fourth case emerged during the campaign. He will only decide on indicting Netanyahu after a legally mandated hearing. Legal experts expect at least some charges to be filed, which could result in a short term in office for Netanyahu and another round of elections."This is a clear beginning of Netanyahu's fifth term, but his fifth term might end up being his shortest one", says Reuven Hazan, a political scientist from Jerusalem's Hebrew University. "In another year, we might be in a battle for either leadership of the Likud or another election."___Associated Press writer Aron Heller contributed.___Follow Ilan Ben Zion at and Aron Heller at

Erdogan says Russian S-400s delivery could be brought forward-Ankara’s purchase of the air defense system risks US sanctions and has further strained already tense relations with Washington-By AFP-TOI-APR 10,19

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the delivery of Turkey’s disputed Russian S-400 missile defense systems could be earlier than initially planned, Hurriyet daily reported on Wednesday.Ankara’s purchase of the S-400s risks US sanctions and has further strained already tense relations with Washington.US officials are concerned over the incompatibility of the S-400s with NATO military hardware as well as Ankara’s increasingly close relationship with Russia.“The S-400 missile defense system was to be delivered in July, maybe we will bring this forward,” Erdogan told Turkish journalists on board his plane after a Russia visit, the newspaper said.Erdogan was in Moscow on Monday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the S-400 purchase and joint coordination in Syria on the agenda.“This step that we have taken for our country’s security neither targets a third country nor does it give our sovereign rights over to a third country,” Erdogan said.In a bid to stop Turkey purchasing the S-400s, the US has offered to sell the US Patriot system but Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said this was not guaranteed.“If the United States does not want to sell the Patriot, tomorrow we can buy a second S-400, or another defense system,” he said during an interview with NTV broadcaster. He said Turkey did not only need the S-400s but also “other defense systems.”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later on Wednesday said Russia was “open” to a second purchase.“Russia has the relevant capabilities, technological skills,” he said.“And of course Russia seeks to expand military and technical cooperation. It’s a completely normal process.”Last week, Washington put a freeze on its joint F-35 fighter jet program with Turkey in protest over the S-400 deal. Turkey planned to buy 100 F-35A fighter jets, with pilots already training in the US.The plane’s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, said that contracts with Turkish companies to build parts for the F-35 had been expected to reach $12 billion.Washington has said Turkey’s role in the manufacturing of the F-35s can be replaced.“It is wrong to say ‘we will take Turkey out’ of this program,” Cavusoglu said.Ties between Ankara and Washington have been damaged in the past few years over American support for a Syrian Kurdish militia viewed as terrorists by Turkey, while the US has expressed concern over US mission employees and citizens in Turkish custody.

In a first, Bedouin women lead tours in Egypt’s Sinai-‘It is against our culture, but women need jobs,’ says 47-year-old Umm Yasser, a guide and part of Sinai Trail, a project helping Bedouin tribes develop local tourism-By Nariman El-Mofty-APR 10,19

ABU ZENIMA, Egypt (AP) — Amid a stunning vista of desert mountains, a Bedouin woman, Umm Yasser, paused to point out a local plant, and she began to explain how it was used in medicine to the group of foreign tourists she was guiding.Umm Yasser is breaking new ground among the deeply conservative Bedouin of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Women among the Bedouin almost never work outside the home, and even more rarely do they interact with outsiders. But Umm Yasser is one of four women from the community who for the first time are working as tour guides.“It is against our culture, but women need jobs,” the 47-year-old Umm Yasser said. “People will make fun of us, but I don’t care. I’m a strong woman.”They are part of Sinai Trail, a unique project in which local Bedouin tribes came together aiming to develop their own tourism. Founded in 2015, the project has set up a 550-kilometer (330-mile) trail through the remote mountains of the peninsula, a 42-day trek through the lands of eight different tribes, each of which contributes guides. The project has been successful in bringing some income to the tribes, who often complain of being left out of the major tourism development of the southern Sinai, home to beach resorts and desert safaris.Until now, all the project’s guides were men. Ben Hoffler, the British co-founder of the Sinai Trail, felt it was not enough. “How can we be credible calling this the ‘Sinai Trail’ if the women aren’t involved?”But even after years of trying by Hoffler, almost all the tribes still reject women guides. Only one of the smallest, oldest and poorest tribes, the Hamada, accepted the idea. There are some conditions. The tourists can only be women, and the tours can’t go overnight. Each day before the sun sets, the group returns to the Hamada’s home village in Wadi Sahu, a narrow desert valley. The organizers also urge the tourists to photograph the guides only when they are wearing a full veil over the face that covers even the eyes with mesh.Umm Yasser was the first to join. She said she started hiking when she was a child and knows the mountains and the valley by heart. She convinced the families of three other women to allow them to work as guides.Their tribe is a poor one, living in small concrete houses strung along the Wadi Sahu. Electricity runs no more than five hours a night and there is no running water. It is isolated deep in the mountains of south Sinai, far from the tourism centers in Sinai along the Red Sea coast or near the famed Saint Catherine’s Monastery. The men often leave the village to find work, either at resorts or in mines further south.“We need money to help support our families for basic necessities,” Umm Yasser said. “We need blankets, clothes for the children, washing machines, fridges, books for school.”The Sinai Trail came together in some of the hardest years for tourism. It was launched as an Islamic State-linked insurgency intensified in the northern part of Sinai and a year after a Russian passenger plane crashed, killing all 224 passengers on board in a likely bombing. The violence has stayed far from southern Sinai, where tourist resorts are located — but the industry has had to push hard to win tourists back.On a recent tour joined by the Associated Press, 16 female tourists — from Korea, New Zealand, Europe, Lebanon and Egypt — were led by Umm Yasser and the other three women guides, Umm Soliman, Aicha, and Selima, through the rugged landscape in and around Wadi Sahu.“I think south Sinai is safe especially when you are in the care of Bedouins. … This is where I feel at home. Every corner there is scenery and another beautiful view,” said Marion Salwegter, a 68-year-old Dutch woman who travels to southern Sinai every year alone to escape the winters in Holland.During the two-day tour, the group hiked across an endlessly broad landscape of mountain peaks and valleys of dry riverbeds. While male Bedouin guides range far from home, the women tend to move closer, with an exceptionally rich knowledge of the surrounding mountains. The guides talked about the local plants and herbs, the history and legends of the area and pointed out the borders of the area’s tribes. In the evening, the group returned to the Hamada tribe’s village. The women sat on the floor of Umm Yasser’s home and the tourists asked the guide about life in the village, marriage and divorce.Umm Yasser is skeptical other Bedouin women will join her as a guide or in working in general any time soon. But, she said, “There is no shame in working. This is what I believe in, and it makes me strong.”Some attitudes are changing. Mohammed Salman, an elderly man from the Aligat tribe, said he thought the guides project was a great step for women. “If a woman wants to work, she should be able to have the right to,” he said. “Many men say no, a woman’s place is at home. But I’m sick of this ideology. She’s a human being.”Younger Bedouin girls tagged along with the group and talked about wanting to be female guides in the future.“This trip is going down in history and will be talked about,” said Julie Paterson, a facilitator for Sinai Trail who often works with Bedouin women. “It might also go into Bedouin oral history.”

A senior leader of the Palestinian terror group Hamas on Wednesday dismissed the outcome of Israel’s election as irrelevant, as near-final results showed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc had won a clear majority in the Knesset vote.“All parties are faces of one coin, the coin of occupation,” said Khalil al-Hayya.He said there was “no difference” between the Israeli parties, and pledged that Gaza’s rulers — who are committed to Israel’s destruction — would continue seeking to “end the occupation and achieve our national goals.”The Palestinian issue and prospects for peace negotiations were relatively absent from political debate this election. In what was seen as a last-ditch effort to galvanize his base, Netanyahu made a vow over the weekend to apply Israeli sovereignty to all Jewish settlements in the West Bank. With some 97 percent of votes in the election counted, Netanyahu’s Likud party was tied with Blue and White, but his right-wing/ultra-Orthodox bloc held a decisive lead. The premier was thus safely en route to forming a majority governing coalition.A senior Palestinian official said Tuesday night Israelis had voted to “maintain the status quo,” after two of three exit polls similarly predicted a Netanyahu victory.Saeb Erekat, chief Palestinian Authority negotiator, called the results “a clear-cut vote” to maintain the years-long impasse in the peace process, adding, “they want us to live under a deeper apartheid system than existed in the darkest hours of South African apartheid.”Ahead of the vote, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had said he hoped the elections could help bring peace. He had not expressed support for a specific candidate. Abbas had said he hoped the new government would understand “peace is in ours, theirs and the world’s interests.”“All that we hope is there will be a just way, a correct way to reach peace,” he said. “We don’t need any government that doesn’t believe in peace.”Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations have been frozen since the US-brokered process collapsed in 2014 amid mutual accusations of blame. US President Donald Trump is expected to soon roll out his peace plan, but the Palestinians have preemptively rejected the proposal and are boycotting the White House over his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

IMF sees Iran plunging deeper into recession as US sanctions bite-The global lender projects Islamic Republic’s economy to shrink by a massive 6 percent this year, also hitting regional growth-By AFP-TOI-10 April 2019

DUBAI — The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday worsened its forecast for Iran’s recession as US sanctions bite, with Tehran’s slump denting overall growth in the Middle East and North Africa. The global lender’s World Economic Outlook projected Iran’s economy will shrink by a massive 6.0 percent this year, its worst performance since it contracted by 7.7 percent in 2012.The latest figure represented a sharp deterioration from October’s prediction of a 3.6 percent contraction, as US sanctions batter the Islamic republic’s crucial oil sector. The report also estimated that Iran’s economy, the second largest in the region behind Saudi Arabia, shrunk by 3.9 percent in 2018, as opposed to 1.5 percent projected earlier. The prediction of deeper pain for Iran, lower oil growth and civil strife saw the IMF cut its overall forecast for the Middle East and North Africa to 1.3 percent, down 0.9 percent from January.“The outlook for the region is weighed down by multiple factors, including slower oil GDP growth in Saudi Arabia… US sanctions in Iran and civil tensions and conflict across several other economies, including Iraq, Syria, and Yemen,” the IMF said.It maintained its projections for Saudi Arabia, saying the region’s leading economy is expected to grow by a muted 1.8 percent this year and 2.1 percent in 2020.The IMF said it expected the kingdom’s growth, which reached 2.2 percent last year, to stabilise at a modest rate in the medium term due to the subdued outlook for oil prices and output.Overall the wider regional economy is projected to improve in 2020 to a healthy growth rate of 3.2 percent, the IMF said. The international lender expects oil prices to average around $59 a barrel this year and next, down from its October projections of above $65 a barrel.

Airbnb to cancel its ban on West Bank settlement listings-Policy change comes as part of court settlement with a dozen American Jewish plaintiffs; company says it will donate any West Bank profits to humanitarian groups-By JTA-TOI-APR 10,19

In a reversal of a 2018 policy announcement, Airbnb will not remove West Bank settlement listings from its website. The policy change came in a court settlement Monday between the vacation rental company and a dozen American Jewish plaintiffs who had sued the company, organized by Shurat Hadin-Israel Law Center, a pro-Israel law organization. A copy of the settlement obtained by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency says that Airbnb will now allow rentals in both Palestinian areas and Israeli settlements of the West Bank.“Airbnb takes no position on the Host-Plaintiffs’ claims, or others’ claims, to legal title to the properties on which the accommodations are located,” the court settlement reads. “All listings for accommodations located in the Affected Region [the West Bank] will at all times be permitted on its platform, subject to applicable laws, rules, and regulations.”Airbnb announced in November that it would remove some 200 rental listings in West Bank settlements because it contended that the settlements “are at the core of the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians.” The movement to boycott Israel saw the decision as a victory. But Airbnb never actually removed the listings. And about a week after the decision, Shurat Hadin organized the suit on behalf of a dozen American Jewish families, most of whom own properties in West Bank settlements. The suit was filed under the Fair Housing Act, which was meant to prevent discrimination against minorities in the United States. Because Airbnb is based in the United States, it must adhere to the act in all its listings worldwide. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claimed that Airbnb was discriminating against them for being Jewish, given that it still allowed listings by Palestinian Muslims and Christians in the West Bank.“The policy Airbnb announced last November was abject discrimination against Jewish users of the website,” Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the president of Shurat Hadin, said in a statement. “Whatever one’s political view, discrimination based on religious affiliation should never be the solution.”In a statement posted to its website Tuesday, Airbnb said it will donate any profits from the West Bank to humanitarian groups. It also will apply the same policy to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two disputed territories adjacent to Georgia, and evaluate its listings in other disputed territories.Airbnb has yet to announce where it will donate the profits.“We understand the complexity of the issue that was addressed in our previous policy announcement, and we will continue to allow listings throughout all of the West Bank, but Airbnb will take no profits from this activity in the region,” the statement reads. “Any profits generated for Airbnb by any Airbnb host activity in the entire West Bank will be donated to non-profit organizations dedicated to humanitarian aid that serve people in different parts of the world.”Airbnb said in its statement that it does not support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel.“Airbnb has always opposed the BDS movement,” the statement reads. “Airbnb has never boycotted Israel, Israeli businesses, or the more than 20,000 Israeli hosts who are active on the Airbnb platform. We have always sought to bring people together and will continue to work with our community to achieve this goal.”

Germany raids groups suspected of supporting Hamas-Two Islamist organizations believed to have raised funds for Palestinian terror group ‘under the cover of humanitarian aid’-By TOI staff and Agencies-TOI-APR 10,19

German authorities have carried out raids on groups suspected of helping the Palestinian terror group Hamas under the guise of providing humanitarian aid.The interior ministry said Wednesday that some 90 properties across Germany associated with an “Islamist network” were searched on Wednesday. It said the network was headed by two groups based in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, WorldWide Resistance-Help and Ansaar International. On their websites, the two groups say they raise charitable funds for Gaza, Somalia, Syria and other countries. The ministry said there are indications that the network provided financial and propaganda support to Hamas, a longtime enemy of Israel that runs the Gaza Strip and was listed as a terror group by the European Union in 2001.Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said that “anyone who supports Hamas under the cover of humanitarian aid flouts fundamental value judgments of our constitution and discredits the commitment of many aid organizations.”

New poll finds Palestinians deeply distrust their leaders-87% of survey respondents want PA to hold elections for first time since 2005; only 11% say they trust Abbas, 6% Hamas chief Haniyeh-By Agencies and TOI staff-10 April 2019

A new public opinion survey showed the overwhelming majority of Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are disillusioned with their leaders and desperate for presidential elections. The poll, conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Center and released Tuesday, showed that only 11 percent of Palestinians trust Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of Fatah, and 6% trust rival Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh.Around 48% said they don’t trust any political figure, and 87% are demanding elections.Abbas’s 14-year rule has been marked by corruption and deepening Palestinian division. The survey, which had a margin of error of 3%, was based on the responses of 1,200 people. The Palestinian Authority hasn’t held elections since 2006 due to a bitter split between the West Bank’s governing Fatah movement and the Gaza-ruling Hamas terror group, which violently ejected PA forces from the Strip in 2007.The two sides have engaged in a number of failed reconciliation efforts, the most recent of which was an Egyptian-brokered agreement signed in October 2017.That deal was supposed to include the resumption of PA civilian control of Gaza and talks on forming a unity government, though such a government never materialized. In February, Abbas said that the Palestinian Authority hoped all relevant parties would cooperate in order to hold parliamentary elections in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.Since a PA court in December called on Abbas to announce new elections for the Palestinian legislature, the aging Palestinian leader has pledged on more than one occasion to do so.Hassan Yousef, a Hamas leader in the West Bank, said in February that while the group generally supports holding elections, it maintains that the Palestinians should simultaneously hold a vote for the legislature, presidency and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s largest body, the Palestinian National Council.Yousef, who also is a Hamas co-founder, told The Times of Israel: “We also believe participating in elections requires the PA to stop pursuing and arresting our members.”Abbas has not indicated an intention to call for elections to the presidency or the Palestinian National Council.Adam Rasgon contributed to this report.

U.S. farmers, still reeling from floods, face new storm-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Mark Weinraub-April 10, 2019

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. farmers, who have spent the last month sifting through damage left by a storm that flooded more than a million acres of crop land, now face a blizzard ahead of planting season. The storm hit the U.S. Rockies on Wednesday and was forecast to move eastward, threatening to bring as much as 30 inches of snow to western Minnesota and southeast South Dakota and another round of flooding to the Plains states."We are still recovering from the bomb cyclone and the floods," said Craig Frenzen, a 55-year-old farmer from Fullerton, Nebraska. "This storm is testing our will, testing our mindset about what we are going to do with farmland that is left."Frenzen, who grows corn, soybeans and wheat and raises cattle, said about a sixth of his acreage was devastated by the floods in March. Even after the waters receded, his land was strewn with sand, silt and other debris that he estimated would cost $500 to $600 an acre to get back into production. The latest storm would delay planting on his remaining acres and threaten some of the cattle, particularly young calves and pregnant cows. The herd must be constantly monitored throughout the storm to ensure that animals do not suffocate in the snow."It's no sleep," said Frenzen, who was setting up wind breaks on his operations as protection from hypothermia. The storm will hit just as many farmers are making their final preparations to begin planting. Growers were hoping to get an early start this year as a rainy fall limited the amount of field work they could do after harvest, but the weather has not cooperated."It is a very wet snow," said Drew Lerner, meteorologist with World Weather Inc. "It will melt and there is no place for that moisture to go."Spring delays threaten productivity at a time when the farm economy is already under severe stress and growers' profits are falling due to the trade war with China."With prices as low as they are you need to maximize yields as much as you can," said Darin Anderson, a farmer in Valley City, North Dakota. "You already know you are going to be behind the eight ball from the get go. Everyone is behind."(Reporting by Mark Weinraub; Editing by David Gregorio)

Millions in central U.S. brace for 'life-threatening' blizzards, potential floods-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 10, 2019

(Reuters) - A blizzard hitting the U.S. Rockies on Wednesday was forecast to move eastward over the next day, threatening to bring new flooding to the Plains states including parts of South Dakota and Missouri that are still recovering from last month's inundation.High spring temperatures will give way to heavy snow, gale-force winds and life-threatening conditions across a swathe of the central United States running from the Rockies to the Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service."This is potentially a life-threatening storm," Patrick Burke, a meteorologist with the NWS's Weather Prediction Center in Maryland, said Wednesday.A cyclone last month dropped heavy rains over that region, causing extensive flooding along the Missouri River and more than $3 billion in damage to property and crops in Nebraska and Iowa.Pueblo, Colorado, hit 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) on Tuesday, but will drop down to 25F (minus 4C) by early Thursday. Similar temperatures are forecast in Denver. The storm is expected to bring blinding, heavy wet snow across the region, likely downing trees and causing widespread power outages, widespread road closures and making driving treacherous, Burke said."It's slow moving. It won't push farther east until Friday," he said. Some areas of western Minnesota and southeast South Dakota were expected to get up to 30 inches of wet, heavy snow, the NWS said. Two factors may limit the flooding effect, forecasters said. Thawed ground will be able to absorb more precipitation than last month's frozen ground and a fall of heavy snow rather than rain will slow the runoff process.Nearly 500 flights were canceled at Denver International Airport on Wednesday, about a quarter of its total schedule, according to, an airline tracking website.Airport officials said they had snow-removal crews in place. The coming storm was expected to exacerbate flooding along the Missouri River in areas where dozens of levees were breached in March, exposing communities to future surges. The river was not expected to crest in areas of Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri until between three to five days after the storm. The storm is expected to weaken and push off into the Great Lakes area and northern Michigan on Friday, bringing more rain and snow, the weather service said.(Reporting by Andrew Hay in Taos, New Mexico, Rich McKay in Atlanta and Gina Cherelus in New York; Editing by Alison Williams and Susan Thomas)

Spring snow falls in New England, U.S. Midwest prepares for blizzard-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Alex Dobuzinskis-April 8, 2019

(Reuters) - New England states enjoying the first signs of spring were hit with a wintry blast of snow on Monday and parts of the U.S. Midwest prepared for a blizzard. The snow storm in New England brought more than 2 inches (5 cm) of snow to Portland, Maine, and up to half a foot fell in inland areas of the state and parts of neighboring New Hampshire, said meteorologist Brian Hurley of the federal Weather Prediction Center. Some places in New England can expect to receive up to 10 inches (25 cm) of additional snow by Wednesday, when the storm will drift out into the Atlantic Ocean, Hurley said. The wintry weather in New England was not blustery enough to count as a blizzard, meteorologists said, but a stronger storm was forming over the Midwest, taking shape as a blizzard that will strike on Tuesday night. The snow storm will wallop Wyoming, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota, with some areas receiving more than a foot of snow, said Dave Samuhel, senior meteorologist at'ALL-OUT BLIZZARD'-"This is going to be an all-out blizzard," Samuhel said, adding that the peak of the snowfall will come on Thursday."It's going to be an impressive storm," Samuhel said. "You want to get where you need to be before the snow falls because it's going to come in heavy."The blizzard will create hazardous roadway conditions in some parts of the Midwest and could trigger power outages, Samuhel said, but the snow will likely melt quickly in time for the weekend. The National Weather Service said a rapidly deepening low-pressure system is sweeping eastward. The Weather Service has posted storm watches and warnings in parts of 10 states, from Montana and Utah east to Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin. The weather system could pile more misery on areas that are still recovering from last month's "bomb cyclone", a late-winter blizzard that brought high winds and drifting snow to the Rocky Mountain region. It then turned into drenching rains as it moved across the Midwest and caused widespread flooding along the Missouri River. In January, an unusually strong arctic cold blast known as a "polar vortex" shattered a few all-time cold records in the Upper Midwest, creating wind chills as cold as 60 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (minus 50 Celsius).(Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis in Los Angeles; editing by Bill Tarrant and Lisa Shumaker)

ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Pompeo, in testimony to Senate, refuses to back two-state solution-After Netanyahu pledges to extend Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements, secretary says that ‘ultimately the Israelis and Palestinians will decide how to resolve this’-By AFP and TOI staff-APR 10,19

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday refused to reaffirm American support for a Palestinian state after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to extend Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements.Testifying before a Senate subcommittee just as Israel wrapped up tight elections, Pompeo declined to respond when Democrats asked him to back a two-state solution.“Ultimately, the Israelis and Palestinians will decide how to resolve this,” Pompeo replied.Pompeo said that US President Donald Trump’s aides Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt would soon lay out a proposal “to resolve a problem that’s been going on for decades and decades that previous administrations couldn’t solve.”“We’re hopeful that we have some ideas that are different, unique, which will allow the Israelis and the Palestinian people to come to a resolution of the conflict,” Pompeo said.Days before the Israeli election, Netanyahu broke precedent by saying that he planned to extend Israeli sovereignty over all West Bank settlements, home to some 400,000 Israeli Jews.Exit poll results showed Netanyahu with a likely straightforward path to cobbling together a government and staying in power for a record fifth term. The constellation of parties will likely include the far-right Union of Right-Wing Parties, which has advocated for an extension of sovereignty.US Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, told Pompeo that such a unilateral Israeli move would indicate “no agreement” would be possible with the Palestinians.“It sounds like you’ve already abandoned what has been a bipartisan foreign policy of opposing the annexation of any or all of the West Bank by Israel,” he said.Trump has strongly supported Netanyahu and taken a series of major actions long sought by Israel, including recognizing Jerusalem as capital of the Jewish state and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The prime minister’s main election challenger, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, criticized Netanyahu’s pledge to apply Israeli law at the settlements, calling it “irresponsible” and questioning why a prime minister who has served for a total of 13 years was announcing such a dramatic decision on the eve of an election.
