The Palestinian Authority is set to ask the UN Security Council to vote Friday on a resolution demanding the Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines in a timeframe of three years, Israel Radio reported Thursday.According to the report, the resolution will be submitted following PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s speech at the UN General Assembly Friday evening.Earlier Thursday, rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah, headed by Abbas, reached a “comprehensive” agreement for the return of their unity government in Gaza after two days of talks in Cairo, negotiators from both sides said.Earlier this week, Abbas met with US Secretary of State John Kerry who reiterated Washington’s opposition to the UN initiative and indicated that the US will likely veto the resolution. Kerry emphasized the US’s support for a two-state solution and said the only way to a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was through negotiations.Kerry’s high-profile bid to hammer out a full peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinian Authority collapsed spectacularly in April amid bitter recriminations on both sides, despite more than a year of shuttle diplomacy.Abbas has said a UN rejection of the resolution would prompt him to seek membership in international institutions and agencies. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the decision Thursday by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) member states to reject a resolution circulated by Arab countries criticizing Israel over its alleged nuclear arsenal, and urging it to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty.Nations meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general conference voted 58-45 against the resolution on Thursday, while 27 abstained.“The vote is a rejection of a repeated attempt by Arab states to condemn and isolate Israel at the IAEA and to distract the international community from the pressing problems affecting the Middle East, first and foremost Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said, according to Ynet.The prime minister’s remarks followed a similar statement by Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman who also hailed the IAEA decision.Liberman said the defeat of the bid was a “victory for Israeli diplomacy.”In a Facebook message posted Thursday, the foreign minister warned the Arab countries who submitted the resolution to think about what the regional situations would be if Syria has suceeded in completing the construction of a nuclear reactor — allegedly bombed by Israel in 2007 — which could now possibly be in the hands of the Islamic State or the Nusra Front.Backed by 18 Arab states, including Syria, the resolution expressed concern “about the Israeli nuclear capabilities,” urging Israel to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight. Israel has never acknowledged that it possesses nuclear weapons.On Wednesday, Arab countries circulated the resolution that singled out Israel. Separately, the UN conference voted 117-0, with 13 abstentions, in favor of a resolution submitted by Egypt that called on “all states in the region” to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

As a US-led coalition continued to strike Islamic State positions in Iraq and Syria Thursday, Western nations braced for Islamists’ retribution, whether in their own territory or abroad.For Western leaders, one of the most worrying aspects of the Islamic State group has been its strong appeal to radicalized Muslims throughout the world, who have flocked to the Middle East to support the terrorist organization and who could pose a threat to their home countries upon their return.US intelligence officials estimate some 12,000 foreigners have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State group, which has as many as 31,000 fighters.As the bombings of Islamic State targets intensified, so, apparently, did fears of retaliatory terror attacks by IS or its sympathizers.In Turkey, the US Embassy issued a security warning late Wednesday, urging US citizens to be vigilant against possible terrorist attacks. We have an important task to carry out in Iraq.”Earlier this week, Australian police shot dead a terror suspect after he stabbed two officers during a meeting outside a Melbourne police station. Police said he may not have acted alone.Some experts suspected the attack was inspired by the Islamic State group’s recent call to supporters to wage terrorism in their home countries. Australian media reported there was evidence that the man may have been planning to behead the two officers and drape an Islamic State flag over their bodies.Last week, a series of Australian counterterrorism raids led to the arrests of 15 people.
