47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Petition to block move of New Jersey Polish statue falls short-In a drive to stop Jersey City moving the Katyn memorial more than half the signatures on were found to be invalid-By AP-TOI-JUL 25,18

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (AP) — A petition drive seeking to overturn a decision to move a statue honoring Polish World War II victims has fallen short.Jersey City city clerk Robert Byrne told the Jersey Journal Tuesday he had validated 3,833 of the 9,471 signatures submitted on July 3. Byrne said about 60 percent were either not registered to vote in Jersey City or were not found in the state’s voter database. The Katyn Memorial, honoring the estimated 22,000 Poles massacred by Soviet troops in 1940, has stood at Exchange Place in downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, for three decades.City officials, including Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, want to move the statue as part of a renovation of the plaza where it currently stands, on the waterfront across from downtown New York City. The head of the group organizing the renovation has called the statue “gruesome” and has said he prefers that it get a new home, according to published reports. The bronze statue depicts a Polish soldier bound, gagged, and impaled by a bayonet. It sparked strong emotions in Poland, where Katyn is remembered as one of the worst tragedies to befall the nation in a long tragedy-filled history.I met w/Eric Lubaczewski + senior officials from the Polish Govt + we have a resolution as a win-win. The goal was one that respects/cares/keeps the monument in an extremely prominent location to honor sacrifices while also giving #JerseyCity a chance to re-purpose our waterfront— Steven Fulop (@StevenFulop) May 11, 2018-In May Fulop reached a compromise deal on relocating the Katyn Memorial whereby the statue would be moved a new park to be created one block south of its current location. The petition was launched in the wake of that compromise, by residents who objected to relocating the monument. The plans to remove the statue were a top news story in Poland in May, where many feel that it is revenge for the passage earlier this year of a Polish law that makes it a crime to blame Poland for any of the Holocaust crimes committed by Nazi Germany.Petitioners have until August 2 to amend the signatures.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

Hundreds missing in Laos after hydropower dam collapses-Unknown number believed dead as flash floods surge through six villages in impoverished Southeast Asian country-By Thanaporn PROMYAMYAI and JOE FREEMAN-JUL 25,18

BANGKOK, Thailand (AFP) — Hundreds of people are missing and an unknown number believed dead after a partly constructed hydropower dam in southeast Laos collapsed, sending flash floods surging through six villages, state media reported Tuesday.Communist Laos is traversed by a vast network of rivers and there are several dams being built or are planned in the impoverished and landlocked country, which exports most of its hydropower energy to neighboring countries like Thailand.Laos News Agency said the accident happened on Monday evening at a dam in the country’s far south, close to the border with Cambodia, releasing five billion cubic meters of water — more than two million Olympic swimming pools. The agency said there were “several human lives claimed, and several hundreds of people missing,” while some 6,600 people had been made homeless as authorities scrambled to evacuate villagers from the devastation.Aerial footage posted on the Facebook page of local news outlet ABC Laos showed a vast brown inundation swamping houses and jungle alike over a huge area.Biggest flooding in southern Laos #Attapue #Laos #Flood— Zeno (@Zeno7Inc) July 24, 2018-Other images showed families waiting for rescue on the rooftop of their house, with a nearby Buddhist temple partially submerged.Nearly 24 hours after the dam’s collapse, local authorities said they were struggling to gauge the extent of the disaster.“We do not have any formal information yet about any casualties or how many are missing,” an official in Attapeu province, where much of the flooding occurred, told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that was “no phone signal” in the flooded region.“We sent rescue teams who will help them and provide basic assistance first,” the official added.-Heavy rainfall-A Thai company involved in the hydropower project confirmed that a 770-metre long auxiliary dam used to divert river water had failed after heavy rainfall.“The incident was caused by continuous rainstorm which caused high volume of water to flow into the project’s reservoir,” Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding said in an English language statement. The $1.2 billion dam is part of a project by Vientiane-based Xe Pian Xe Namnoy Power Company, or PNPC, a joint venture formed in 2012.15:30 pm. The level of water still remain height tho the rain is stopped! many lives still trapped on the rooftop of the house! Waiting for the rescue team. Water and food is needed! #Attapue #Laos #Flood #SouthernLaos— Zeno (@Zeno7Inc) July 24, 2018-South Korea’s Korea Western Power and the state-run Lao Holding State Enterprise are also involved in the joint venture. The 410 megawatt capacity dam was supposed to start commercial operations by 2019, according to the venture’s website. The project consists of a series of dams over the Houay Makchanh, the Xe-Namnoy and the Xe-Pian rivers in Champasak Province. It planned to export 90 percent of its electricity to energy-hungry Thailand and the remaining amount was to be offered up on the local grid.Under the terms of construction, PNPC said it would operate and manage the power project for 27 years after commercial operations began.-‘Battery of Asia’-Dam projects in Laos, mainly providing power to neighboring countries, have long been controversial with fears over environmental damage and the impact on communities displaced to make way for the construction.A massive hydroelectric project at Xayaburi, led by Thai group CH Karnchang, is at the heart of Laos’ plan to become “the battery of Southeast Asia.”The 1,285 megawatt dam — which will cost $3.5 billion according to state media — has sharply divided downstream Mekong nations like Vietnam and Cambodia who worry it will disrupt vital ecosystems, fisheries and their own river systems.Communist authorities in Laos keep tight control information and are often opaque about business deals and development projects. The media is state-controlled and and the government vigorously pursues dissent or protesters. The country has around 10 dams in operation, 10 to 20 under construction, and dozens more in planning stages.“Once they cast themselves as the battery of Asia, exporting electricity became one of the major revenue sources, so it’s basically selling natural resources such as water,” Toshiyuki Doi, Senior Advisor at Mekong Watch, told AFP.Occasionally reports of accidents in the hydropower sector do emerge.Six Vietnamese workers were killed when a gas cylinder exploded at the construction site of a hydropower plant in central Laos in July last year.

Heavy rainfall causes lane closure on Highway 63 in Fort McMurray-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-July 24, 2018

A section of a major transportation artery in Fort McMurray remains closed this week as crews clean up after a mudslide. On Saturday night, a section of the hill that shoulders Highway 63 collapsed on to one of the lanes near Morrison Street. The mudslide has affected a southbound lane, which is used to bypass traffic headed to the downtown core.Traffic continues to flow uninterrupted on the rest of the five-lane highway.Alberta Transportation spokesperson Wayne Wood said no vehicles were damaged as a result of the landslide, which was first reported Saturday around 10 p.m.Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo spokesperson Adam Hardiman said it's too early to say if the landslide on Highway 63 will impact municipal or private property that sits on the hill above the roadway. The lane will remain closed most of the week, Wood said, until engineers can be certain that the hill is stable. The mudslide was just one problem in the region, after a weekend of heavy rainfall. On social media people posted pictures of flooded streets, including Grey Crescent in the neighbourhood of Gregoire.Residents in the trailer park told CBC Monday their properties were not seriously damaged and they spent the weekend cleaning up their driveways and yards. The municipality also said in a email statement Monday that it received reports of basement flooding in the region and two reports of sewer backups.Hospital back up and running-Alberta Health Services said things are almost back to normal after water flooded the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre's emergency department, the kitchen and fifth floor offices on Saturday.AHS spokesperson Lisa Laferriere said emergency and kitchen operations resumed on Sunday after both areas were cleaned, though cleanup continues on the fifth floor."There was minimal impact to patient care during this time," Laferriere said in an email. "We are exploring ways to avoid this happening again and will be conducting construction to mitigate the issue in the future."Laferriere said a storm water system backup caused the flooding in the emergency department and AHS is investigating the exact location of water leaks in the other locations.Connect with David Thurton, CBC's Fort McMurray correspondent, on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or email him at

After jet downed, PM says Syria ‘blatantly violated’ border agreement-Netanyahu warns country will not tolerate Damascus breaking 1974 pact on separation of forces in Golan Heights-By TOI staff-JUL 25,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the downing of a Syrian fighter jet that traveled into Israeli airspace on Tuesday afternoon, warning that the country would continue to take similar action against any incursion into its territory.Israel on Tuesday said the Sukhoi-model jet had traveled two kilometers into its airspace when it shot two Patriot missiles at the plane, shooting it down. The plane reportedly crashed inside Syria, killing its pilot. The fate of a second crewman is unknown.“Our air defense systems identified a Syrian air force plane taking off from the Syrian T-4 airbase and penetrating into Israeli airspace,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “This was a blatant violation of the 1974 separation agreement between us and the Syrians. We will not accept any such penetration of, or spillover into, our territory, neither on the ground nor in the air.”According to the IDF, the fighter jet took off from the Iran-linked T-4 air force base in central Syria, which Israel has bombed in the past, and traveled “at high speed” toward the Golan Heights.“Our forces acted appropriately,” Netanyahu stressed in a tweet. “We insist that the Syrians strictly abide by the Separation of Forces Agreement between us and them.”The IDF said it had noticed increased air force activity in southwestern Syria, near the border, since the morning. Syria and Russia have been waging a large air campaign to oust the last remaining pockets of rebels from the border region.Syria claimed the jet had been in Syrian airspace when it was shot down.IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus said there was no “confusion” about the fact that this was a Syrian fighter jet. In the past, Israel has hesitated in shooting down incoming aircraft out of concerns they might belong to Russia.Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting discussing the Middle East, Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon warned the country would take similar action on any border.“Israel will not tolerate any violation of our sovereignty – not from Syria, not from Gaza, not from any other enemy that threatens our security,” he said. The 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement requires Syria to abide by a demilitarized zone between the two countries. The agreement was drawn up in the wake of the 1973 Yom Kippur War established a demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria.Tuesday’s breach of Israeli airspace, and its interception, set off incoming rocket alert sirens throughout northeastern Israel, sending thousands of residents rushing to bomb shelters for the second day in a row.On Monday, Israel’s David’s Sling missile defense system attempted to intercept two missiles shot as part of internal fighting in Syria, in an apparent false alarm.Construction Minister Yoav Galant (Kulanu), a former IDF commander of the Southern Command, said shooting down the jet sent a message to Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah.“Violating Israel’s airspace crosses the red line,” he said.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Charges of rigging, intimidation mar Pakistan election-Independent watchdog says campaign for Wednesday's vote has included 'blatant, aggressive and unabashed attempts to manipulate' the outcome-By KATHY GANNON-TOI-JUL 25,18

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — As Pakistan prepares to make history Wednesday by electing a third straight civilian government, rights activists, analysts and candidates say the campaign has been among its dirtiest ever, imperiling the country’s wobbly transition to democratic rule. The campaign has been characterized by “blatant, aggressive and unabashed attempts to manipulate” the outcome, with media being silenced and the intimidation of candidates, according to Pakistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission. At the center of most allegations is the powerful military establishment, along with its intelligence agency, known by the acronym ISI.The manipulation is seen as seeking to prevent the Pakistan Muslim League, the party of disgraced Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, from returning to power, while giving a shot at running the country to former cricket star Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI.The rancorous campaign and charges of manipulation have polarized Pakistanis, and whichever party loses is likely to cry fraud.“Whatever way elections run, I see a lot of instability,” said Ayesha Siddiqa, a defense analyst and author of “Military Inc.,” about the massive financial holdings of Pakistan’s military. The military has ruled the country of more than 200 million people — directly or indirectly — for most of its history. Successive attempts at protracted democracy have been interrupted by military coups, the last one in 1999.Pakistanis went to the polls in 2008 and elected their first civilian government in 12 years.“This is quite a schizophrenic moment for Pakistan’s democracy,” said Moeed Yusuf, associate vice president of the Asia Center at the Washington-based US Institute of Peace. “On the one hand, you have completing 10 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. … On the other hand, you’ve got all sorts of allegations of pre-poll rigging and manipulation.”The left-leaning Pakistan People’s Party was propelled to victory in 2008 by sympathetic voters following the death of their leader Benazir Bhutto, killed by militant radicals she had vowed to eradicate.Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League, or PML-N, won in 2013, but he fell out with the military after questioning its links to some militant groups and seeking to make it subservient to parliament. He was ousted last year after leaked documents from a Panama law firm revealed he and his family had undisclosed assets abroad. He was found guilty of corruption, banned from politics for life and sentenced to 10 years in jail, where he is appealing his conviction. His brother, Shahbaz Sharif, took power.“The shadow of the military looming over the election amplifies the continued struggles of democracy in Pakistan,” said Michael Kugelman, deputy director of the Asia Program at the US-based Wilson Center. “Allegations of army meddling and the fact that troops will be deployed on mass levels on election day make it crystal clear that this election process is not entirely a civilian-led process.”At the request of the Election Commission of Pakistan, the military is deploying 350,000 soldiers to polling stations nationwide. Leading rights activist I.A. Rehman said it was worrying that soldiers will be positioned inside booths where votes are cast. The campaign also has been rattled by violence, with candidates from several parties targeted. An attack earlier this month in Pakistan’s southwestern Baluchistan province killed 149 people, including a parliamentary candidate. Another 300 people were wounded. An unprecedented number of radical religious parties also are participating in the election, including some that have been banned but are running under new names. Violent Sunni militant groups that vow to rid Pakistan of its minority Shiites are seeking election, and candidates from both the PTI and PML-N have been seen courting them. In some areas, candidates have been intimidated into not running.“It is worrying how strategically religion is being used as a tool to come into power by a large number of candidates,” said Samar Minallah Khan, a human rights activist and documentary filmmaker. “Political parties are paying homage to banned outfits, handing out party tickets to people who in the past have been putting lives of activists and minorities under threat through their television programs, spewing hatred and violence. It seems the priority is to win, no matter what.”There are 85,307 polling stations across Pakistan and more than 12,000 candidates are vying for 272 seats in parliament and 577 seats in four provincial assemblies.International and domestic election observers will monitor voting. The European Union Election Observation Mission has 60 monitors at polling stations in major centers.Under Pakistani law, separate seats are reserved for women and non-Muslim minorities, which comprise 4 percent of the population.

18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;(AGAINST ALL NATIONS ARMIES THAT COME AGAINST JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL)
18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

EZEKIEL 38:1-7
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.

EZEKIEL 39:1-8
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal: (TUBOLSK)
2 And I will turn thee back,(RUSSIA-ARAB MUSLIM ISRAEL HATERS) and leave but the sixth part of thee,(5/6TH OR 300 MILLION DEAD RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS I BELIEVE) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts,(RUSSIA) and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands,( ARABS) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB) and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.

Russia slams rescue of Syria’s White Helmets via Israel-Moscow says relief workers transferred to Jordan are 'pseudo-humanitarians,' operation shows who they really serve-By Stuart Winer and Agencies-TOI-JUL 25,18

Russia has criticized the extraction of members of a Syrian volunteer rescue organization, who were pulled out of their warn-torn country by the Israeli army and then transferred to safety in neighboring Jordan.“The recent news involving the White Helmets organization speaks volumes,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday. “Reportedly, Westerners carried out an emergency evacuation of a large group of these pseudo-humanitarians to Jordan via Israeli territory.”The statement echoed Syria’s own criticism of the rescue nighttime operation, which saw 422 rescuers and their families spirited into Israel via the Quneitra crossing on the Golan and then to Jordan, out of fears they would be targeted by an approaching Syrian and Russian military onslaught.Founded in 2013, the Syria Civil Defense, or White Helmets, is a network of first responders who rescue wounded in the aftermath of airstrikes, shelling or explosions in rebel-held territory. Damascus and Moscow have accused them of being a front for terror groups because they operate in opposition controlled-areas, which don’t receive government services.“It is symbolic that the White Helmets chose to flee Syria with foreign intervention, thus revealing who they really are and demonstrating their hypocrisy to the entire world,” the statement said. “As the saying goes, a guilty conscience gives itself away, and these operators clearly showed whose orders they were following and who was funding them.”The statement also accused the group of staging attacks to tar the Syrian regime and allying with terrorists. The Russian embassy in Israel also sent out a series of tweets protesting the transfer. However, a spokesperson said they had not tried to intervene with Israel to halt the operation.July 22 West evacuated #WhiteHelmets pseudo-humanitarians via #Israel. These militants acted exclusively in areas controlled by Islamic radicals, concocted #fakenews, staged chemical provocations like in #EasternGhouta. They flee #Syria and reveal who they are.— Russia???????? in Israel (@israel_mid_ru) July 24, 2018-On Sunday the Israel Defense Forces said it engaged in the “out of the ordinary” gesture due to the “immediate risk” to the lives of the civilians, as Russian-backed regime forces closed in on areas held by rebels. It stressed that it was not intervening in the ongoing fighting in Syria.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later said he had approved the humanitarian gesture after a request from US President Donald Trump. There are concerns for the safety of hundreds more White Helmets volunteers who were not able to join the evacuation operation and were left behind in rebel territory as government forces close in.On Monday a Syrian foreign ministry source, cited by state news agency SANA, condemned the evacuation operation and branded the White Helmets “terrorists.”The White Helmets have rescued thousands of civilians trapped under the rubble or caught up in fighting in battered opposition-held zones along various fronts of Syria’s seven-year conflict. The group receives funding from a number of governments, including Britain, Germany, Canada and the United States, and from individual donors.Since its formation, when Syria’s conflict was nearing its third year, more than 250 of its volunteers have been killed. The White Helmets are named for the distinctive white hardhats worn by volunteers and have gained international renown for their daring rescues of victims from rubble following regime airstrikes, often filmed and circulated on social media. In recent years Israel has been engaged in a multi-faceted humanitarian relief operation to keep thousands of Syrians along the border from starving or falling ill due to the lack of food and basic medical care.

B.C.'s carbon tax a real-life rebuttal to carbon pricing's political opponents, some experts say-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-July 24, 2018

After the carbon tax made headlines at this week's premiers' meeting, it's worth taking a closer look at the birthplace of North America's oldest carbon pricing scheme: British Columbia. This week, Saskatchewan and Ontario officially joined forces against the federal government's proposal for a national carbon pricing policy.Saskatchewan has been at the forefront of the anti-carbon pricing movement. Its premier, Scott Moe, called the carbon tax policy "flawed.""It doesn't reduce emissions. It costs people in the province money and it costs our industries competitiveness," Moe said July 12.He found an ally in newly-elected Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has promised to get rid of Ontario's cap and trade carbon pricing system.Ford, speaking to reporters on July 13, called the carbon tax, "the worst tax that any government could put on businesses."But this political commentary is contrary to what many experts say — especially when it comes to B.C.'Unequivocally' effective Ten years ago, the province became the first jurisdiction in North America to implement a carbon tax. Since then, B.C.'s tax has attracted significant international media attention and academic scrutiny. The Economist noted B.C.'s economy had "kept pace with the rest of the country" since the introduction of the tax.  In 2016, The New York Times declared the tax "worked as advertised."Research by University of British Columbia professors Werner Antweiler and Sumeet Gulati also found the carbon tax policy to be beneficial."My research has shown unequivocally that it is effective," Gulati said. "In transportation, it has reduced gasoline consumption. It has made people buy more fuel efficient cars."In their 2016 paper, they found per-capital gasoline demand in B.C. decreased by close to 15 per cent between 2007 and 2014. They note their findings are in line with other major academic research on B.C.'s carbon tax.The emissions criticism-One of the criticisms of the carbon tax, including that from Saskatchewan's premier, is that it does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions.According to Brian Murray, the director of the Duke University Energy Initiative, whose 2015 paper focused on B.C.'s carbon tax , emissions have dropped between five and 15 per cent since it was implemented. However, he agrees it is hard to gauge how effective the carbon tax has been on reducing those emissions."[There] hasn't been a huge decline in emissions in British Columbia but it seems very likely to me that emissions would have continued to increase pretty dramatically in the province had the carbon tax not been put into place," Murray said.He says the variability in emissions is a function of the carbon tax itself. In carbon pricing, he explained, there are two variables you can control: the price of carbon (like a carbon tax) or the amount of emissions (as in a cap and trade system)."Are you going to fix the price and allow emissions to vary or are you going to fix emissions and allow the price to vary? A lot of jurisdictions have chosen to go with the latter because they've been trying to achieve quantitative targets," Murray said.A question of politics-Kathryn Harrison, a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia, says a lot of the rhetoric against the carbon tax is political posturing."It's not surprising that [Saskatchewan] would be the province that led the charge because their per capita emissions of greenhouse gases is more than three times the national average and the highest of any province," Harrison said."In Ontario's case ... it is about Doug Ford speaking to his base and stirring up popular opposition to anything that would increase the price of electricity or gasoline."Gulati also concurred, calling the carbon tax "an easy target for political activism.""Everybody feels like it's punitive and unfair to increase the price of gasoline," Harrison said. "It is easy to fight a carbon tax."Despite that, the movement for carbon pricing seems to be growing.Murray notes nearly 40 jurisdictions around the world have adopted some sort of carbon pricing scheme. He says if China approves carbon pricing as a national policy next year, a quarter of global emissions will be under a carbon price regime."Those that argue that carbon pricing by it's very definition is a killer to the economy just don't match up well with what we've seen these economies do."With files from The Early Edition.
