Israel Cannot Depend on UN Forces For Security

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told Russia’s President Vladimir Putin over the weekend that Israel will hold its fire against Syria – as long as Syria holds its fire against Israel.In a statement at the opening of the government’s regular Sunday morning Cabinet meeting Netanyahu said he had discussed the situation with Putin in a phone conversation, warning him that “the situation is becoming daily more complex.“Only last week, we saw battles close to our border on the Golan Heights. Israel is not intervening in the Syrian civil war, as long as fire is not being directed at us,” the prime minister said.“The crumbling of the U.N. force on the Golan heights underscores the fact that Israel cannot depend on international forces for its security,” however, he pointed out. “They can be part of the arrangements. They cannot be the basic foundation of Israel’s security.”On another front, Netanyahu added that he would also discuss, once more, the need to jumpstart final status talks with the Palestinian Authority with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, saying that he has already spoken with him about the issue before, and will speak with him about it again.“Together we will try to advance a way to find an opening for negotiations with the Palestinians with the goal of reaching an agreement. This agreement will be based on a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish State, and on solid security arrangements based on the IDF.Netanyahu also noted that the government is changing the date for the conclusion of daylight savings time, and listed the accomplishments already reached thus far in the new coalition’s first few months, such as passing the budget and the ‘Open Skies’ agreement, both controversial pieces of legislation that sparked protests.“I would like to re-emphasize that the citizens of Israel chose us to focus on getting things done, not on petty politics,” he commented with some asperity, “and this we will do.”

It has continued to grow alongside interreligious dialogue and dialogue between believers and non-believers,” President Napolitano said. “You have a universal vision but your words affect and are of particular relevance to us Italians.”Today’s private meeting lasted 25 minutes and took place in the Apostolic Palace library. The Pope, who recently said redemption is also for atheists, stressed that in the context of the current crisis “political commitment needs to be reconsidered” urgently and that “believers and non-believers must work together to promote a society in which injustices can be overcome and each person welcomed and given the chance to use their own personal skills to contribute to the common good.”Francis also stressed the need for young people in particular to show a renewed commitment to politics.The meeting between the Pope and the Italian President took place in light of Napolitano’s re-election as head of state last 20 April. Peretz Blasts Danon Over Comments on 'Two-State Solution'

"Anyone who tries to bury the idea of two states endangers the future of Zionism,” warns Environment Minister Amir Peretz.

Environmental Protection Minister Amir Peretz (Hatnua) slammed Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon on Saturday, after Danon spoke out against a two-state solution to solve the Israeli-Arab conflict, and said that if Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu brings the issue of a Palestinian state to a vote in the government, nobody will vote in favor."Anyone who tries to bury the idea of two states gives life to the idea of a binational state and endangers the future of Zionism,” Peretz said Saturday night.“Hatnua joined the government to promote the negotiations on the basis of the two-state solution and we will continue to do so,” he added.

On Thursday, Danon told the Times of Israel that “there was never a government discussion, resolution or vote about the two-state solution. If you will bring it to a vote in the government — nobody will bring it to a vote, it’s not smart to do it — but if you bring it to a vote, you will see the majority of Likud ministers, along with the Jewish Home [party], will be against it.”“Today we’re not fighting it [Netanyahu’s declared goal of a Palestinian state],” Danon said, “but if there will be a move to promote a two-state solution, you will see forces blocking it within the party and the government.”The deputy minister said “there is no majority for a two-state solution” among the 31 lawmakers that make up the Likud-Yisrael Beytenu Knesset faction. The Likud party’s central committee passed a motion against the creation of a Palestinian state about 10 years ago, Danon added, and this means that the party legally was bound to oppose the idea of two states for two people.Netanyahu’s office was quick to distance itself from Danon’s statements, saying on Saturday they “do not represent the position of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the government of Israel.”The head of Peretz’s party, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, has been placed in charge of the peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, which broke down in 2010, because its Chairman Mahmoud Abbas refused to negotiate with Israel even though it agreed to his precondition and froze construction in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem for 10 months.Instead, Abbas has continued to impose preconditions on talks with Israel, including a demand that Israel release terrorists who were jailed before 1993, freeze construction for a second time and even present a map of the future Palestinian state before any negotiations take place.

Livni said this week that delaying the “two-state solution” is an historical mistake.Livni, who spoke at the American Jewish Committee 2013 Global Forum in Washington, D.C., warned of “devastating consequences” for Israel in case U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest attempt to renew peace talks fails."Time is working against those who believe that two states is the only Zionist way to maintain our identity," Livni said. "There are those who want to postpone this decision, but it would be an historic mistake of anyone who calls himself a Zionist."Livni began her political career in the right of center Likud party, then moved to the left-centrist Kadima party with Ariel Sharon and when voted out of her position as its head, left the Knesset to return in the last elections with a new left-leaning party formed within a few days. The party, Hatnua, won six Knesset seats.Peretz, who used to head the Labor party and served as Defense Minister during the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, defected from Labor to join Livni because of disagreements with Labor chairwoman Shelly Yechimovich. Peretz defected just days after the members of the Labor party placed him in the number 3 spot on the party's list for the Knesset.

The Anti-Defamation League welcomed on Friday the condemnation from the United States of the latest report by U.N. Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Richard Falk on the human rights situation of Arabs living in Israel, and called on other member states of the Council to “denounce Falk and his outrageous abuse of the position he holds.”Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, the U.S. Representative to the Human Rights Council, stated that the U.S. “completely rejects and condemns the irresponsible call” and denounced Mr. Falk’s assault on the credibility of U.N. Watch, an internationally respected U.N.-accredited NGO.  Falk’s recommendation that the organization be investigated to ascertain that it is not controlled by the Israeli government was also condemned.“We welcome U.S. Ambassador Donahoe’s strong rejection and condemnation of Richard Falk’s latest report on the human rights situation of the Palestinians, and call on Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, U.N. High Commissioner Navi Pillay and member states of the Human Rights Council to denounce Falk and his outrageous abuse of the position he holds,” said ADL National Director Abraham Foxman.“Mr. Falk’s attempt to paint himself as the victim of an Israeli government-sponsored defamation campaign, carried out by U.N. Watch, has echoes of classical anti-Semitic conspiracy theories,” asserted Foxman.“We fully agree with Ambassador Donahoe’s conclusion that Mr. Falk ‘is unfit to serve in his role as a U.N. special rapporteur.’  His continued affiliation with the U.N. makes a mockery out of the Human Rights Council’s founding purpose, and undermines the important work of the U.N.  If he does not leave voluntarily, the Human Rights Council should remove him,” he added.
ADL has publicly criticized Mr. Falk’s consistently biased reports in the past.The report is scheduled to be presented to the UNHRC on June 10th and contains Falk’s usual one-sided attacks solely blaming Israel for the challenges facing the Arab population and the lack of progress on the peace process.  Falk also repeats his prior call for a boycott of companies conducting business with Israel or Israelis in Judea and Samaria.

In a new report presented to members of the European Parliament, NGO Monitor details the damaging impact of highly secretive European Union funding for radical political advocacy Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).According to the Jerusalem-based NGO Monitor, EU funds are going to organizations involved in anti-Israel boycotts and violent demonstrations, which undermine the EU's efforts to secure peace in the Middle East.The report, Lack of Due Diligence and Transparency in European Union Funding for Radical NGOs, shows how EU-funded NGOs lead the campaigns to demonize Israel through the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) - actions that entirely contradict the EU's proclaimed objectives of supporting peace and democratic development."The EU's grantees are centrally involved in the 2001 Durban NGO Forum's strategy of political warfare and demonization of Israel. The Coalition of Women for Peace (CWP) and its allies are driving Europe's double standards that single-out Israel through product labeling," stated Prof. Gerald Steinberg, president of NGO Monitor.  "The EU refusal to release any significant documents that shed light on funding decisions reflects a clear violation of transparency principles, and allows for highly irresponsible EC actions.""The study emphasizes the fundamental damage caused by extreme secrecy and the lack of due diligence in the European Commission's decision-making for funding radical NGOs," continued Steinberg. "The facts clearly demonstrate that either the officials involved were unaware of the groups chosen to receive taxpayer funds, or that they chose to promote NGOs that fuel the conflict and promote confrontation, under the facade of 'non-violence.'"The EU report follows an NGO Monitor report presented in Washington in May on U.S. Government funding for several Middle East political NGOs. On the basis of this publication, members of Congress and U.S. Government officials took action to insure transparency prevent the misallocation of such grants for counterproductive NGOs.
