In the current geopolitical context, the expected scenario was a meeting between the Israeli hawk and the Vatican dove. But what we saw was a frank and constructive meeting on some thorny issues regarding the Middle East.The warmth and personal charisma that characterise the Francis effect are even changing the face of papal diplomacy. The Holy See has changed its approach: it is willing to collaborate and is focusing on what unites, not on what causes division. Instead of presenting the Israeli leader with a list of issues to resolve (for example the issue of the holy places in the Holy Land and the visa question), he made some positive proposals for development. His vision of unity specifically for the Middle East goes hand in hand with Francis’ geopolitics, based on his aspirations for peace and equality.In a part of the world where the winds of war blow strong in Syria, the Pope witnessed willingness for dialogue on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program and called for peaceful coexistence for the sake of a higher common good, leaving behind particularisms and age-old differences. Confrontation does not solve anything, while dialogue can open doors that have remained closed until now. Hence, the Holy See diplomacy is adopting a cooperative approach. Francis and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tête-à-tête meeting at the Apostolic Palace lasted 25 minutes. During the customary exchange of gifts, the Prime Minister gave Francis a book written in Spanish by his father, on the Inquisition.“My father spoke Spanish well but I don’t speak a word,” Netanyahu said. The Prime Minister included a dedication to Francis in the book and also presented the Pope with a silver tray complete with menorah and a jar for oil. "To His Holiness Pope Francis with great respect", an inscription on the tray read. Francis, in exchange, presented the Prime Minister with a bronze bas-relief depicting St. Paul.An interpreter translated during the meeting. Francis spoke in Spanish and Netanyahu in English. The Prime Minister arrived at the Vatican with a 14-member delegation. There were no ministers present, just military officials. The book Francis was presented with was published in 1995 by Random House USA and tells the story of the conversos, Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism. The book argues that these Jews were not persecuted for religious reasons but for ethnic ones. One of the officials accompanying the Prime Minister seized the opportunity to have his photo taken with a Swizz Guard during a break.As the meeting drew to a close, a remark made by the Prime Minister’s wife Sara sounded like a reference to the Pope’s announced visit to the Holy Land (for which no official dates have been set yet): “We can’t wait.” After this, the Israeli delegation was received by the new Vatican Secretary of State, Mgr. Pietro Parolin who made an implicit reference to the time when he as Under-Secretary for Relations with States, he led the Holy See delegation in the bilateral negotiations with Israel: When he met Netanyahu today he said in English: “I think we’ve already met.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Monday morning with Pope Francis at the Vatican and presented the pontiff with a copy of his late father’s book about the Spanish Inquisition.Netanyahu presented a Spanish translation of the 1995 book, “The Origins of the Inquisition,” to Francis during their 25-minute closed-door meeting, as well as a Hanukkah menorah.Netanyahu’s father, Benzion Netanyahu, was an Israeli historian who died last year. A Zionist activist who opposed partitioning Palestine between Arabs and Jews, he was best known in academic circles for his research into the Catholic Church’s medieval inquisition against the Jews of Spain.“To his Holiness Pope Franciscus, a great shepherd of our common heritage,” the Israeli leader wrote on the inside cover of the book.Francis thanked him and presented Netanyahu with a small bronze plaque of St. Paul.The Vatican Press Office said the conversation touched on “complex political and social situation in the Middle East, with Particular reference to the reinstatement of Negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, expressing Hope that a just and lasting solution Respecting the rights of Both Parties may be reached as soon as possible.”According to Ynet, Sara Netanyahu, the prime minister’s wife told the Holy See after the meeting, “We’re expecting you, we can’t wait.” The paper quoted Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi saying that the Pope had yet to set a date to visit the Holy Land.Later Monday, Netanyahu met with Italian Premier Enrico Letta and warned that Iran represented a threat to Europe and the entire world if it acquires nuclear weapons.Letta, for his part, announced that Italy had set aside funding to build a Holocaust museum in Ferrara, and invited Netanyahu to join him for the inauguration.The encounter was the prime minister’s first with the current pope, who has already met at the Vatican with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in October and with Israeli President Shimon Peres in April. Netanyahu met with the previous pope, Benedict XVI, in 2009, and with pope John Paul II in 1997.

Citing an anonymous official Israeli source, CNN reported last week that the pope was scheduled to make his first visit to Israel in May. The Vatican has not confirmed that report.Six government ministers joined Netanyahu on the trip and were set to meet with Italian ministers.The pope and the prime minister reportedly discussed negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and security threats Jerusalem faces in the region from Iran and elsewhere, as well as recent European legislation banning circumcision and kosher slaughter, said Murray Watson, a Christian-Jewish relations expert.“The Vatican’s support for the Jewish community in various European countries, where either kosher slaughter or circumcision have recently been called into question or forbidden by law” would likely come up, said Watson, a co-founder of the Centre for Jewish-Catholic-Muslim Learning at King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario.

Attempts to bring about a meeting between the two leaders have not always gone smoothly. In October, Netanyahu’s office issued a statement announcing that the prime minister would be meeting with the pope at the Vatican shortly thereafter to discuss nuclear talks with Iran and the ongoing peace negotiations with the Palestinians.However, it later emerged that the PMO’s announcement was premature; there were no confirmed plans for a meeting with the pontiff, which typically has to be scheduled further in advance.

Peres and Abbas both invited the pontiff to Israel and the Palestinian territories, and Francis has said he would like to visit the Middle East.Abraham Skorka, a rabbi closely affiliated with the leader of the Catholic world, said in October that the pope aimed to visit Israel in March 2014. Skorka said that Francis’s “lifelong dream” was to visit the Holy Land and “to embrace” the rabbi in front of the Western Wall.Around that time, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) met Pope Francis in the Vatican, and invited him to Israel and to the Knesset.Francis replied emphatically, “I’ll come! I’ll come!”Pope Francis’s visit would coincide with the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s visit to Jerusalem in 1964, which took place before the Vatican recognized the State of Israel.The future trip would mark Francis’s second visit to the Holy Land. He arrived here in 1973, just as the Yom Kippur War broke out. As The Times of Israel revealed in April, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (as he was then) spent six days confined to his Jerusalem hotel, studying the Letters of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.

“G8” looks into Vatican dicasteries

Tomorrow the Pope’s Council of Cardinals is to start a three-day meeting to look into the work of all the main Congregations and potential role changes

Andrea Tornielli vatican city The “G8”, the Council of Cardinals appointed by Pope Francis to assist him with Curia reform and the government of the universal Church , begins a series of morning and afternoon meetings tomorrow which are due to conclude on Thursday. This is the second formal round of meetings being held by the papal “council” which is coordinated by Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodriguez Maradiaga. Other members include Giuseppe Bertello (the only Italian and Curia member in the group), Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa (the only archbishop emeritus in the group), Oswald Gracias, Reinhard Marx, Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, Sean Patrick O’Malley and George Pell. The Bishop of Albano (Italy), Marcello Semeraro, is the group’s secretary.This session will only examine the work and roles of the Vatican Congregations, not the pontifical councils. This subject was barely touched on in October because of the time dedicated to the Synod and the consideration of possible reforms in the Secretariat of State. The three-day meeting will therefore examine proposals for the Holy See’s top “ministries”. The Pope is expected to  take part in all the discussion sessions except  those on Wednesday morning, as he will be holding the General Audience.Role changes and adjustments have already been made in the past. For example, Benedict XVI ordered that the Congregation for the Clergy should took charge of the Seminaries after these had been the responsibility of the Congregation for Catholic Education. Other similar changes could yet be made. For instance the council is looking into the possibility of transferring judicial competencies belonging to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, to the Holy See Tribunals.In various interviews, some “G8” members mentioned the potential merging of Pontifical Councils but the Council will not be examining this aspect in any detail just yet. The eight cardinals are due to meet again on 17 and 18 February, before the consistory for the creation of new cardinals which Francis will hold on 22 February, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. This means the cardinals will be given some guidelines on Curia reform before this date.

On eve of Kerry visit, peace talks limping along

Israel, Palestinians met last week for another round of negotiations despite reports of an impasse

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators held a meeting last week amid reports that the talks were headed for a breakdown, the Times of Israel has learned, despite increased tensions recently on the eve of US Secretary of State John Kerry’s return visit to the region this week.The most current tensions revolve around the tenders published last month — and promptly cancelled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — for the planning of some 20,000 units in the West Bank, an unprecedented number, including 1,200 units in the controversial E1 corridor linking Jerusalem with Ma’aleh Adumim. On Sunday, Palestinian Authority sources said that the Palestinians were considering ending peace talks with Israel over the announcement.

The Palestinians claim that although the plans were cancelled by Netanyahu, the tenders still appeared on the website of the Housing and Construction Ministry headed by Uri Ariel (Jewish Home), proving, according to the Palestinians, that Israel intends to implement the plans. Officials in Jerusalem rejected the charges, accusing the Palestinian Authority of “looking for excuses to stop the negotiations.”A senior Israeli political source stressed that Netanyahu’s cancellation of the building plan was in effect.Before Kerry’s last trip to the region in early November, the talks had also suffered a crisis. Israel charged then that the Palestinians were created an artificial crisis for the secretary of state’s sake, in hopes of getting him to up the pressure on the Israeli side.The Palestinians shot back that Israel was avoiding presenting detailed stances on issues, and was thwarting progress in talks by opting to remain vague and non-committal .Despite these setbacks, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas made clear on several occasions that the Palestinians were going to honor their commitments to the US government, vowing that the peace talks with Israel would run their full, nine-month course.Abbas refused to accept the resignation letters tendered to him by members of his negotiating team, Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Shtayyeh. Since those letters were submitted a month ago, several rounds of talks have been held, including the one last week. The two were present at most of the meetings except the last one, to which Erekat arrived without Shtayyeh.Before and after the meeting, Erekat slammed Israel in the media, while denying that talks were taking place.On Monday, Erekat told the Times of Israel that he was not present at the meeting last week with the Israeli negotiating team.Under heavy US pressure, peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians resumed in July after a three-year hiatus. Although they have continued out of the media spotlight, reports have mounted that the two sides have reached an impasse.
