Republicans
enlist in Trump’s effort to undo Biden win in Congress-11 GOP senators,
senators-elect to vote against certifying election results, even as
they acknowledge they won’t succeed in reversing outcome-By LISA MASCARO
and MARY CLARE JALONICK-JAN 3,21-Today, 3:58 am
WASHINGTON (AP) —
A growing number of Republican lawmakers are joining US President
Donald Trump’s extraordinary effort to overturn the election, pledging
to reject the results when Congress meets next week to count the
Electoral College votes and certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.Sen.
Ted Cruz of Texas on Saturday announced a coalition of 11 senators and
senators-elect who have been enlisted for Trump’s effort to subvert the
will of American voters. This follows the declaration from Sen. Josh
Hawley of Missouri, who was the first to buck Senate leadership by
saying he would join with House Republicans in objecting to the state
tallies during Wednesday’s joint session of Congress.Trump’s refusal to
accept his defeat is tearing the party apart as Republicans are forced
to make consequential choices that will set the contours of the
post-Trump era. Hawley and Cruz are both among potential 2024
presidential contenders.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had urged
his party not to try to overturn what nonpartisan election officials
have concluded was a free and fair vote. The 11 senators largely
acknowledged Saturday they will not succeed in preventing Biden from
being inaugurated on Jan. 20 after he won the Electoral College 306-232.
But their challenges, and those from House Republicans, represent the
most sweeping effort to undo a presidential election outcome since the
Civil War.“We do not take this action lightly,” Cruz and the other
senators said in a joint statement. They vowed to vote against certain
state electors on Wednesday unless Congress appoints an electoral
commission to immediately conduct an audit of the election results. They
are zeroing in on the states where Trump has raised unfounded claims of
voter fraud. Congress is unlikely to agree to their demand. The group,
which presented no new evidence of election problems, includes Sens. Ron
Johnson of Wisconsin, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Steve Daines of
Montana, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and
Mike Braun of Indiana, and Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Roger
Marshall of Kansas, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville of
Alabama.Trump, the first president to lose a reelection bid in almost 30
years, has attributed his defeat to widespread voter fraud, despite the
consensus of nonpartisan election officials and even Trump’s attorney
general that there was none. Of the roughly 50 lawsuits the president
and his allies have filed challenging election results, nearly all have
been dismissed or dropped. He’s also lost twice at the US Supreme
Court. The days ahead are expected to do little to change the
outcome.“Joe Biden will be inaugurated on January 20th, and no publicity
stunt will change that,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the top
Democrat on the panel overseeing the Electoral College count.Klobuchar
said the Republican effort to create a federal commission “to supersede
state certifications” is wrong.“It is undemocratic. It is un-American.
And fortunately it will be unsuccessful. In the end, democracy will
prevail,” she said in a statement. The convening of the joint session to
count the Electoral College votes is usually routine. While objections
have surfaced before — in 2017, several House Democrats challenged
Trump’s win — few have approached this level of intensity. On the other
side of the Republican divide, several senators spoke out Saturday
against Cruz and Hawley’s effort.Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said in a
statement that she will vote to affirm the election and urged
colleagues in both parties to join her in “maintaining confidence” in
elections “so that we ensure we have the continued trust of the American
people.”Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said a “fundamental, defining
feature of a democratic republic is the right of the people to elect
their own leaders.” He said the effort by Hawley, Cruz and others “to
overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in swing states
like Pennsylvania directly undermines this right.”Earlier this week,
Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, another possible 2024 contender, urged his
colleagues to “reject this dangerous ploy,” which he said threatens the
nation’s civic norms.Caught in the middle is Vice President Mike Pence,
who faces growing pressure from Trump’s allies over his ceremonial role
in presiding over the session Wednesday. His chief of staff, Marc Short,
said in a statement Saturday that Pence “welcomes the efforts of
members of the House and Senate to use the authority they have under the
law to raise objections.”Several Republicans have indicated they are
under pressure from constituents back home to show they are fighting for
Trump in his baseless campaign to stay in office.Sen. John Thune, the
second-ranking Republican, told reporters at the Capitol that leadership
was allowing senators to “vote their conscience.”Thune’s remarks as the
GOP whip in charge of rounding up votes show that Republican leadership
is not putting its muscle behind Trump’s demands, but allowing senators
to choose their course. He noted the gravity of questioning the
election outcome.“This is an issue that’s incredibly consequential,
incredibly rare historically and very precedent-setting,” he said. “This
is a big vote.”Pence will be carefully watched as he presides over what
is typically a routine vote count in Congress but is now heading toward
a prolonged showdown that could extend into Wednesday night, depending
on how many challenges are mounted.A judge in Texas dismissed a lawsuit
from Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, and a group of Arizona electors trying
to force Pence to step outside mere ceremony and shape the outcome of
the vote. US District Judge Jeremy Kernodle, a Trump appointee,
dismissed the suit late Friday. To ward off a dramatic unraveling,
McConnell convened a conference call with Republican senators Thursday
specifically to address the coming joint session and logistics of
tallying the vote, according to several Republicans granted anonymity to
discuss the private call. The Republican leader pointedly called on
Hawley to answer questions about his challenge to Biden’s victory,
according to two of the Republicans. But there was no response because
Hawley was a no-show, the Republicans said.Hawley’s office said he sent
an email afterward to his colleagues explaining his views. In the email,
Hawley said constituents back home are “angry and disillusioned” with
the outcome of the election.McConnell had previously warned GOP senators
not to participate in raising objections, saying it would be a terrible
vote for colleagues. In essence, lawmakers would be forced to choose
between the will of the outgoing president and that of the voters.
‘An
act of desperation’: UK’s delay of second vaccine dose comes under
fire-Experts criticize British policy, which also reportedly includes
directive allowing healthcare workers to mix Pfizer-BioNTech and
AstraZeneca inoculations-By TOI staff and Agencies-JAN 3,21-Today, 1:45
am
In a shift from practices in the US, Britain plans to give
people second doses of the coronavirus vaccines within 12 weeks of their
first shot rather than within 21 days, to accelerate immunizations
across as many people as quickly as possible. The practice has drawn
some criticism from experts around the world.“It’s an act of
desperation. It also controvenes the scientific protocols,” said Israeli
epidemiologist Ron Balicer on Saturday, in an interview with Channel
12, underlining that it remains unknown how effective a single dose will
be in shielding elderly and high-risk people from the virus.More than a
million people in the UK have already received their first jab of the
Pfizer vaccine. Earlier this week, Britain also approved a vaccine
developed by the University of Oxford and British pharmaceutical firm
AstraZeneca that is substantially cheaper and easier to use.British
authorities then outlined the new dosing regimen, which delays a
person’s second vaccine shot from being done at three weeks to being
given up to 12 weeks after the first shot. According to The New York
Times, British health authorities were also given permission to combine
the vaccines, should a second dose by one of the companies not be
available.“In the short term, the additional increase of vaccine
efficacy from the second dose is likely to be modest. The great majority
of the initial protection from clinical disease is after the first dose
of vaccine,” British medical officers said. The UK plans to ramp up
vaccinations on Monday using 530,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine
and has set a goal of vaccinating 2 million people a week as soon as
possible.Still, the new plan has faced criticism. The UK’s main union
for doctors warned that delaying the second dose causes huge scheduling
problems for thousands of partially vaccinated elderly and vulnerable
people.“It is grossly and patently unfair to tens of thousands of our
most at-risk patients to now try to reschedule their appointments,” said
Richard Vautrey from the British Medical Association.Responding to the
intention to mix the vaccines — a practice banned by the CDC, — John
Moore, a vaccine expert at Cornell University, told The New York Times
that British officials “seem to have abandoned science completely now
and are just trying to guess their way out of a mess.”The UK on Saturday
hit a daily record for new coronavirus infections — 57,725 — and looked
set to soon overtake Italy once again to become the worst-hit country
in Europe with nearly 75,000 COVID-19 deaths. The fear is that with
rising infections, the number of deaths will also grow over the coming
weeks. The UK has recorded its five highest daily new infection numbers
over the past five days — all above 50,000 and double the number of only
a few weeks ago.

Mock funeral procession held in Baghdad to mark
anniversary of Soleimani killing-Memorial event held for former head of
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force and senior Iraqi militia leader
Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, both killed in US drone strike last year-By
AP-JAN 3,21-Today, 9:37 am
BAGHDAD (AP) — A mock funeral
procession marked the anniversary of the killing of Iran’s top general
and a senior Iraqi militia leader in a US drone strike that heightened
fears of a military escalation in the region.Thousands of mourners
joined the march on the highway leading to the Baghdad airport Saturday
evening where the strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani and senior
Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis took place. Soleimani’s
killing dramatically ratcheted up tensions in the region and brought the
US and Iran to the brink of war.Posters of the dead men adorned both
sides of the road, which was lined with tents that served food and
drinks for those who walked the highway. The scene of the bombing was
turned into a shrine-like area sealed off by red ropes, with a photo of
Soleimani and al-Muhandis in the middle, as mourners lit
candles.Shrapnel marks were still visible on the asphalt and walls in
the area.Soleimani headed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force,
responsible for the Islamic Republic’s foreign operations and
frequently shuttled between Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. The procession came
as Iraq’s military said that explosives experts with its naval forces
successfully dismantled a mine that was discovered stuck to an oil
tanker in the Persian Gulf two days earlier. The statement Saturday said
Iraqi authorities have opened an investigation into the incident. No
group has claimed responsibility for placing the mine. The announcement
came a day after Iraq confirmed reports by private security firms that a
mine had been discovered attached to the side of a tanker rented from
Iraq’s Oil Marketing Company, known as SOMO, as it was refueling another
vessel. It said that Iraqi teams were working to dismantle the
mine.Iraq has not provided further details, but the two private security
firms said the discovery was likely a limpet mine on the MT Pola, a
Liberian-flagged tanker.A limpet mine is a type of naval mine that
attaches to the side of a ship, usually by a diver-member of special
forces. It later explodes, and can significantly damage a vessel. The
discovery came amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US in the
final days of President Donald Trump’s administration.Already, America
has conducted B-52 bomber flyovers and sent a nuclear submarine into the
Persian Gulf over what Trump officials describe as the possibility of
an Iranian attack on the anniversary of the strike near Baghdad that
killed Soleimani and al-Muhandis.

Iran says has ‘finger on trigger’ to enrich uranium
to 20% ‘as soon as possible’-Tehran nuclear chief issues warning amid
heightened tensions day ahead of one-year anniversary of Soleimani’s
killing in US drone strike-By Agencies and TOI staff-2 January 2021,
12:07 pm
Iran said Saturday it plans to enrich uranium up to 20
percent at its underground Fordo nuclear facility “as soon as possible,”
pushing its program a technical step away from weapons-grade levels as
it increases pressure on the West over the tattered atomic deal.Ali
Akbar Salehi, the US-educated head of the civilian Atomic Energy
Organization of Iran, offered a military analogy to describe his
agency’s readiness to take the next step.“We are like soldiers and our
fingers are on the triggers,” Salehi told Iranian state television. “The
commander should command and we shoot. We are ready for this and will
produce [20% enriched uranium] as soon as possible.”The move comes amid
heightened tensions between Iran and the US in the waning days of the
administration of President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew
America from Tehran’s nuclear deal in 2018, and ahead of the Sunday
anniversary of a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in
Baghdad a year ago, that has American officials now worried about
possible retaliation by Iran. The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy
Organization Ali Akbar Salehi delivers his speech at opening of the
general conference of the IAEA in Vienna, Austria, September 16, 2019.
(AP Photo/Ronald Zak)-Iran informed the International Atomic Energy
Agency that it intends to produce uranium enriched to up to 20% purity,
well beyond the threshold set by the 2015 Vienna accord, the UN nuclear
watchdog said Friday.“Iran informed the agency of its intention to
enrich uranium at a rate of up to 20 percent in its Fordo underground
plant, to comply with a law recently passed by the Iranian parliament,”
an IAEA spokesperson said. The letter dated December 31 “did not state
exactly when this enrichment activity would begin,” the spokesperson
added.Iran has not enriched to such levels since it entered into the
2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which capped its enrichment at
3.67%. Tehran has recently broken that limit as the nuclear deal has
disintegrated, reaching 4.5%.Uranium enriched to 20% is far below the
90% needed to construct nuclear bombs, but the jump from 20% to 90% is
actually rather quick compared to the work needed to move from 4% to
20%.Iran’s announcement coincides with the anniversary of the US drone
killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad last
year. That attack later saw Iran retaliate by launching a ballistic
missile strike injuring dozens of US troops in Iraq. Tehran also
accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet that night, killing all
176 people on board. As the anniversary approached, the US has sent B-52
bombers flying over the region and sent a nuclear-powered submarine
into the Persian Gulf.On Thursday, sailors discovered a limpet mine on a
tanker in the Persian Gulf off Iraq near the Iranian border as it
prepared to transfer fuel to another tanker owned by a company traded on
the New York Stock Exchange. No one has claimed responsibility for the
mining, though it comes after a series of similar attacks in 2019 that
the US Navy blamed on Iran. Tehran denied being involved.Tensions have
been increasing since Trump withdrew from the accord in 2018 and began
imposing a host of sanctions against Tehran as part of a so-called
maximum pressure campaign aimed at buckling Iran and convincing it to
agree to a more favorable agreement, in Washington’s eyes. But Iran has
not done so, instead choosing to enrich uranium to numbers far beyond
what the deal allowed. The Islamic Republic’s stockpile of enriched
uranium is more than 2.4 tons, 12 times the JCPOA limit, though still
less than the more than eight tons Iran had enriched before signing the
deal.Since the assassination in late November of Iranian nuclear
physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, which Iran has blamed on Israel,
hardliners in Tehran pledged a response and parliament passed a
controversial law calling for the production and storage of “at least
120 kilograms per year of 20 percent enriched uranium” and to “put an
end” to the IAEA inspections intended to check that the country is not
developing an atomic bomb. The Iranian government opposed the initiative
which was also condemned by the other signatories to the accord who
called on Tehran not to “compromise the future.Iran has indicated some
willingness to return to compliance with the agreement if the US, under
incoming president Joe Biden, lifts the sanctions that were put in place
after Trump’s withdrawal.Biden has vowed to re-enter the nuclear
agreement if Iran first returns to compliance with it. He has also
expressed a desire to negotiate a “longer and stronger” follow-up
agreement that would extend the time-limited provisions on the JCPOA,
while also addressing Iran’s missile program and curbing the influence
of Tehran’s regional proxies.Iran has rejected any such negotiations. The
remaining countries that signed the agreement with Iran — Germany,
France, Britain, China and Russia — have been trying to keep it from
collapsing after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States in
2018.In late December the countries agreed to “positively address” the
possibility of a US return to the accord. Germany’s foreign minister
urged Iran not to waste what he called a final window of opportunity. The
three European powers have expressed hope that with the change of
administrations in Washington, the US could be brought back into the
deal, whose goal is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb —
something Tehran insists it doesn’t want to do.Centrifuge machines in

economic incentives in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, but
with the reinstatement of American sanctions, the other nations have
been struggling to provide Iran the assistance it seeks.Iranian Foreign
Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that Iran would “rapidly reverse”
its violations of the nuclear accord when the United States and the
three European powers “perform their duties.”Iranian Foreign Minister
Mohammad Javad Zarif smiles during talks in Moscow, Russia, September
24, 2020. (Russian Foreign Ministry Press Service via AP)-Despite Iran’s
violations, the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported that
Tehran continues to give inspectors full access to its nuclear sites — a
key reason the JCPOA member nations say it is worth preserving. In
December, photos obtained by The Associated Press showed that Iran has
begun construction on a site at its underground nuclear facility at
Fordo.Iran has not publicly acknowledged any new construction at Fordo,
whose discovery by the West in 2009 came in an earlier round of
brinkmanship before world powers struck the 2015 nuclear deal with
Tehran. While the purpose of the building remains unclear, any work at
Fordo will likely trigger new concern. Already, Iran is building at its
Natanz nuclear facility after a mysterious explosion in July there that
Tehran described as a sabotage attack.“Any changes at this site will be
carefully watched as a sign of where Iran’s nuclear program is headed,”
said Jeffrey Lewis, an expert at the James Martin Center for
Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International
Studies who studies Iran. This Nov. 4, 2020, satellite photo by Maxar
Technologies shows Iran’s Fordo nuclear site (Maxar Technologies via
AP)-The IAEA as of yet has not publicly disclosed if Iran informed it of
any construction at Fordo.Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran agreed to
stop enriching uranium at Fordo and instead make it “a nuclear, physics
and technology center.”“This location was a major sticking point in
negotiations leading to the Iran nuclear deal,” Lewis said. “The US
insisted Iran close it while Iran’s supreme leader said keeping it was a
red line.”Since the deal’s collapse, Iran has resumed enrichment there.
US,
Iran locked in tense standoff on 1-year anniversary of Soleimani
killing-American officials fear the Islamic Republic could carry out
attacks on date of assassination of its top general-By TOI staff and
Agencies-JAN 3,21-Today, 6:14 am
Iran on Sunday marked one year
since the death of General Qassem Soleimani in an American drone strike
in Baghdad, amid fears in Washington that Tehran could retaliate for the
killing on the anniversary.US officials have expressed concern that
Iran may be planning attacks against US-allied targets in neighboring
Iraq or elsewhere in the region to coincide with the date. In recent
weeks the US military has taken a range of steps designed to deter Iran,
while publicly emphasizing that it is not planning, and has not been
instructed, to take unprovoked action against Iran.US President Donald
Trump has warned Iran against any attack, and the US has flown strategic
bombers over the Persian Gulf in a show of force meant to deter Iran
from attacking American or allied targets in the Middle East. A US
nuclear submarine crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.Iranian
officials have issued a stream of threats against the US as the
anniversary of Soleimani’s death approached, while accusing Trump of
seeking a “pretext” for war.The US killed Soleimani, who oversaw the
Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force, and others in the
January 3, 2020, strike near Baghdad International Airport. It came
after months of incidents raising tensions between the two countries and
ultimately saw Iran retaliate with a ballistic missile strike targeting
American troops in Iraq.Iran has also threatened to attack Israel since
the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in
late November, in a raid blamed on the Jewish state. The Israeli military
is preparing for the possibility of a strike by Iran-backed militias in
Iraq or Yemen, according to a Friday report. The Israel Defense Forces
held discussions last week about possible attacks, including missile and
drone strikes, from the Iraqi militias and Houthi groups in Yemen, the
Kan public broadcaster reported.Further ratcheting up tensions, the UN
nuclear watchdog said Friday that Iran intends to produce uranium
enriched up to 20 percent purity, well beyond the threshold set by the
2015 Vienna accord and a short jump from weapons-grade material.Iranian
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed Saturday that Israeli
agents were planning to attack American targets in order to instigate an
aggressive US reaction against Iran and spark armed conflict, warning
Trump to avoid such a “trap.” And he warned that any attack against the
Islamic Republic by the US would “backfire badly” on Washington’s “BFFs”
(an initialism for “best friends forever”), in an apparent reference to
the Jewish state.“New intelligence from Iraq indicate (sic) that
Israeli agent-provocateurs are plotting attacks against Americans —
putting an outgoing Trump in a bind with a fake casus belli,” Zarif
tweeted.Top Iranian authorities, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei, had previously said that all those involved in Soleimani’s
killing would face retribution.Days after Soleimani’s killing, Iran
launched a volley of missiles at Iraqi bases housing US and other
coalition troops, with Trump refraining from any further military
response. The Iranian leadership has called the strikes a “slap” and
vowed that “severe revenge” awaits.CNN on Friday reported disagreements
within the Pentagon as to the threat level from Iran. Some officials
said the threat was the highest it’s been since Soleimani’s killing,
with US forces in the region in real danger of attack, while others
insisted this was an exaggeration.“We do see several planning efforts
underway and if even some of them are true and they execute they could

Washington and Tehran have soared since 2018, when Trump unilaterally
withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed crippling
sanctions. The two sides have twice come to the brink of war since June
2019, especially following the killing of Soleimani, who headed the
foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

January 2021, 2:42 pm
TEHRAN — Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief
Hossein Salami vowed Saturday to respond to any “action the enemy
takes,” in a visit to a strategic Gulf island, amid rising tensions with
the US.Salami was speaking on the eve of the first anniversary of the
US killing of top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in a
Baghdad drone strike on January 3, 2020.“We are here today to evaluate
and be assured of our powerful capabilities at sea and against enemies
who sometimes boast… and threaten,” Salami said according to the Guards’
official website Sepahnews.Salami inspected the troops stationed on Abu
Musa island, accompanied by the Revolutionary Guard Corps navy
commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri.“We would respond with a
reciprocal, decisive and strong blow to whatever action the enemy would
take against us,” Salami warned.Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb
islands are located in the Gulf near the entrance to the strategic
Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of world oil output passes. The
islands are under Iranian control but are also claimed by the United
Arab Emirates.Tangsiri had last visited the two Tunb islands on December
25 and emphasized the necessity of the troops’ “combat-readiness and
awareness,” according to ISNA news agency.Tensions have been building up
in the run-up to the anniversary of Soleimani’s killing, with two
American B-52 bombers recently flying over the region.Iran’s Foreign
Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday accused outgoing US President
Donald Trump of aiming to fabricate a “pretext for war” after Trump
blamed Tehran for a rocket strike on the US embassy in Baghdad on
December 20.The US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz has been patrolling Gulf
waters since late November, but American media said this week that the
acting US defense secretary, Christopher C. Miller, had ordered the
Nimitz to return home. The New York Times, quoting US officials, said
this move was part of a “de-escalatory” signal to Tehran to avoid a
conflict in Trump’s last days in office.Iran’s judiciary chief warned
Friday that Soleimani’s killers will “not be safe on Earth.” Ebrahim
Raisi, speaking at an event in Tehran to pay tribute to Soleimani, said
not even Trump, who ordered the January 3 strike, was “immune from
justice.”In a further increase in tensions, Iran said Saturday it plans
to enrich uranium up to 20 percent at its underground Fordo nuclear
facility “as soon as possible,” pushing its program a technical step
away from weapons-grade levels as it increases pressure on the West over
the tattered atomic deal.Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from a
landmark nuclear deal with Iran and world powers in 2018 and launched a
“maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, reimposing and reinforcing
crippling sanctions. The two countries have twice come to the brink of
war since June 2019, especially following the killing of Soleimani.Days
after the Soleimani assassination, Iran launched a volley of missiles at
Iraqi bases housing US and other coalition troops, with Trump
refraining from any further military response.Tehran also accidentally
shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet that night, killing all 176 people
on board.Iran has also threatened to attack Israel since the
assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in late
November, in a raid blamed on the Jewish state. The Israel Defense Forces
held discussions last week about possible attacks, including missile
and drone strikes, from the Iraqi militias and Houthi groups in Yemen,
the Kan public broadcaster reported.
Iraq dismantles mine on
tanker in Persian Gulf-No group has claimed responsibility for attaching
explosives to vessel; authorities open investigation-By AP-JAN
3,21-Today, 5:08 am
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s military on Saturday said
explosives experts with its naval forces successfully dismantled a mine
that was discovered stuck to an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf two days
earlier. The statement said Iraqi authorities have opened an
investigation into the incident. No group has claimed responsibility for
placing the mine. The announcement came a day after Iraq confirmed
reports by private security firms that a mine had been discovered
attached to the side of a tanker rented from Iraq’s Oil Marketing
Company, known as SOMO, as it was refueling another vessel. It said that
Iraqi teams were working to dismantle the mine.Iraq has not provided
further details, but the two private security firms said the discovery
was likely a limpet mine on the MT Pola, a Liberian-flagged tanker.A
limpet mine is a type of naval mine that attaches to the side of a ship,
usually by a diver-member of special forces. It later explodes, and can
significantly damage a vessel. The discovery came amid heightened
tensions between Iran and the US in the final days of President Donald
Trump’s administration.Already, America has conducted B-52 bomber
flyovers and sent a nuclear submarine into the Persian Gulf over what
Trump officials describe as the possibility of an Iranian attack on the
one-year anniversary of the US drone strike near Baghdad that killed a
top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, and top Iraqi militia leader Abu
Mahdi al-Muhandis.Iraq is marking the anniversary with a series of
events this week, including a ceremony at Baghdad’s airport Saturday
night, where the strike that killed the two men occurred.Thousands of
mourners joined a mock funeral procession on the highway leading to the
airport, which was blocked with cars Saturday evening.Posters of the
dead men adorned both sides of the road, which was lined with tents that
served food and drinks for those who walked the highway. The scene of
the bombing was turned into a shrine-like area sealed off by red ropes,
with a photo of Soleimani and al-Muhandis in the middle, as mourners lit
candles.Shrapnel marks were still visible on the asphalt and walls in
the area.Soleimani headed Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force,
responsible for the Islamic Republic’s foreign operations and
frequently shuttling between Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. His assassination
dramatically ratcheted up tensions in the region and brought the US and
Iran to the brink of war.
Yemen PM: Airport attack by Iran-backed
rebels meant to ‘eliminate’ government-Missile attack in Aden killed 25
people, targeted prime minister’s plane as it landed, the arrival hall
and the VIP lounge-By Samy Magdy -JAN 3,21-Today, 12:54 am
CAIRO
(AP) — Yemen’s prime minister on Saturday said that a missile attack on
the airport in Aden was meant “to eliminate” the country’s new
government as it arrived in the key southern city — a daring assault
which he blamed on Iran-backed rebels.Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik
Saeed spoke to The Associated Press in an interview conducted at his
office in the Mashiq Palace in Aden. It was the leader’s first interview
with international media after he survived Wednesday’s attack that
killed at least 25 people and wounded 110 others.“It’s a major terrorist
attack that was meant to eliminate the government,” the premier said.
“It was a message against peace and stability in Yemen.”Saeed repeated
his government’s accusations that Yemen’s Houthi rebels were responsible
for the missile attack on the airport and a drone assault on the
palace, shortly after the premier and his Cabinet were transferred
there. The new Yemeni government was formed in December to end a
dangerous political rift with southern separatists who are backed by the
United Arab Emirates. The internal rift threatened the UAE’s
partnership with Saudi Arabia that is fighting the Houthis in
Yemen.Saeed said that the “techniques” used in the airport missile
attack were hallmarks of the Houthis’ strategy.Houthi officials have
denied being behind the attack, but sought to blame unspecified groups
in the Saudi-led coalition. The rebel leaders have not offered any
evidence nor answered requests for comment. The Houthis have carried out
similar attacks in the past. In 2015, former Yemeni Prime Minister
Khaled Bahah and members of his Cabinet survived a missile attack,
blamed on the Houthis, that struck an Aden hotel used by the government.
Last year, the Houthis fired a missile at a military parade of a
militia loyal to the UAE at a base in Aden, killing dozens. The attack
took place moments after a plane carrying Saeed and his Cabinet members
landed at the airport. AP footage from the scene at Aden’s airport
showed members of the government delegation disembarking as the blast
shook the tarmac, with many ministers rushing back inside the plane or
running down the stairs, seeking shelter.Saeed said three
precision-guided missiles had struck the facility, targeting his plane,
the arrival hall and the VIP lounge of the airport.“The guidance
accuracy was great. The operation was huge,” he said. The prime minister
said Yemeni investigators have collected the remains of the missiles and
that experts from the Saudi-led coalition and the US would help
determine the type and origins of the missiles.Saeed and his newly
formed Cabinet were returning to Yemen a week after they were sworn in
before Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in Saudi Arabia’s
capital, Riyadh, where the embattled leader resides. The Cabinet
reshuffle was part of a power-sharing deal between the Saudi-backed Hadi
and the secessionist Southern Transitional Council, an umbrella group
of militias seeking to restore an independent southern Yemen, which
existed from 1967 until unification in 1990.Saeed, the prime minister,
said his government would prioritize “security and stability” in
government-held areas after months of infighting between Hadi’s
government and the STC.“Whatever the challenges in Aden, the government
remains,” he said.He also pointed to “huge” economic challenges as being
the focus of his government. The conflict in the Arab world’s most
impoverished nation began when the Houthis captured the capital of Sanaa
in 2014, forcing Hadi’s government to flee. The following year, the
Saudi-led coalition intervened against the Iran-backed rebels in what
has turned into a stalemated war. Since then, more than 112,000 people —
fighters and civilians — have been killed.Aden’s airport is expected to
reopened Sunday, Transportation Minister Abdel-Salam Hamied announced
while visiting the facility.

Outgoing UN peace envoy:
Palestinians can gain from Israel’s normalization deals-As he leaves
post, Nickolay Mladenov says he sought to mediate through understanding
sides’ viewpoints, rather than ‘sit on the sidelines and preach’-By TOI
staff-2 January 2021, 7:12 pm
The UN’s outgoing Middle East peace
envoy has said the Palestinians could gain from Israel’s normalization
agreements with Arab states, potentially strengthening their hand in
peace talks.Nickolay Mladenov, 48, finished his term as United Nations
peace envoy this week after serving in the role since 2015. He
previously was Bulgaria’s foreign minister and had been set to become
the special UN envoy for Libya, but last week said he couldn’t take on
the position for “personal and family reasons.”In a report on Mladenov’s
time in office published Saturday, the New York Times said the
ambassador was one of the first officials to come to the conclusion that
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was utterly serious in his pledge to
annex parts of the West Bank, which he believed would be “terrible” for
Israel. My thinking was: If this is the wrong way to go but you can see
why it would be appealing to certain parts of the population, what would
be appealing to a larger part that is not destructive but actually
constructive?” Mladenov told the paper. While he did not claim any credit
for the agreements, the report said Mladenov helped build support for
using normalization as a carrot for Israel in exchange for shelving the
annexation plans.“There were some people who were very much caught off
guard by this,” said Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s senior
adviser and son-in-law. “He saw what we were doing. We confided in him,
and he would give us constructive feedback.”Israel agreed to drop the
annexation plans as part of the US-brokered agreement with the United
Arab Emirates announced in August. It has since reached additional
normalization deals with Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. The Palestinian
Authority fumed at the UAE and Bahrain over the deals, recalling its
ambassadors to the two Gulf states in protest. The PA also slammed the
agreement with Sudan, but has been muted in its response to the
normalization deal between Israel and Morocco.“OK, now it’s very
emotional, the Palestinians are super angry,” Mladenov said. “But put
away those emotions and think: Who’s most effective when they try to
push Israel to do certain things? Egypt and Jordan. If four, six or 10
Arab countries have embassies in Tel Aviv, you’d want them to be on your
side, right?”He noted that Israel, the UAE and Bahrain had inked formal
agreements establishing diplomatic ties.“That’s a big thing. Neither
Israel nor the Arab countries will want to ruin it. That gives certain
countries leverage in Israel. If you’re the Palestinians, you’ll really
want to explain to your Arab brothers and friends what your positions
are, and bring them back to the table on your side of the conversation,”
he said.Mladenov also recalled his intense mediation efforts during
periodic bouts of fighting in the Gaza Strip between Israel and
Palestinians, and said he preferred to attempt to reach solutions
through understanding each side’s viewpoint than “sit on the sidelines
and preach.“I know from my own experience that when the quote-unquote
foreigners come and tell you what to do, you just shut them off. You’re
like, ‘Thank you very much,'” he said. “You can’t preach to these guys.
Remember, they’ve been it at it for half a century.”His tenure as Middle
East peace envoy has won him plaudits from officials in Israel, the
Palestinian Authority, the Trump administration and Hamas.“If you as the
UN are not clear where you stand on these things, you can’t be
credible,” Mladenov said in the interview. “And I suppose that being
critical of both the Israelis and the Palestinians, where I felt that
they’ve done things wrong, and welcoming them when they’ve done things
right — I think that’s a novelty in this frozen conflict.”
Netanyahu
hints at trips to Arab states: ‘I recently visited other countries’-PM
doesn’t specify which countries he visited, following trip in November
to Saudi Arabia for meeting with crown prince-By TOI staff-JAN
3,21-Today, 12:33 am
Prime Minister Netanyahu on Saturday hinted
that he recently visited several Arab countries, in an apparent
reference both to his trip in November to Saudi Arabia and others.“I
recently visited other countries and like I couldn’t say then about the
Emirates, I can’t specify right now,” he told officials from his Likud
party, according to leaks from the meeting. Netanyahu had been asked
about a possible deal with Iraqi Kurds, the Walla news site reported. The
comments come two weeks after Netanyahu said that “many, many more
countries” would be signing normalization agreements with the Jewish
state “a lot sooner than people expect.”Netanyahu was reported to meet
with the Saudi crown prince in Red Sea city of Neom on November 22,
along with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. At the time, a Saudi
government adviser confirmed the meeting and the trip to The Wall Street
Journal, saying that the meeting, which had lasted several hours,
focused on Iran and the establishment of diplomatic ties between Riyadh
and Jerusalem, but did not yield substantial agreements. Education
Minister Yoav Gallant also confirmed the trip, calling it “an amazing
achievement.”US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia John Abizaid, left, and Saudi

Faisal bin Farhan denied that Netanyahu or any other officials from the
Jewish state had taken part in a meeting with the crown prince, in a
tweet issued several hours after the reports started circulating.Since
September, Israel has struck normalization agreements with the UAE,
Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, with US officials saying a deal with Saudi
Arabia is “inevitable.” Saudi officials, however, have said a peace deal
between Israel and the Palestinians must precede recognition of the
Jewish state. However, Bahrain normalizing ties suggested at least a
Saudi acquiescence to the idea, as the island kingdom relies on Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia has also approved flights between Israel and its new Gulf
friends passing over its territory.Israel has long had clandestine ties
with Saudi Arabia and Gulf Arab states that have strengthened in recent
years, as they have confronted a shared threat in Iran.In 2018,
Netanyahu visited Oman, another country with which it does not have
diplomatic ties.A senior Trump administration official said last month
that the White House had offered Indonesia, the world’s largest
Muslim-majority nation, up to $2 billion in US development aid if it
recognizes Israel.Likud’s Regional Cooperation Minister Ofir Akunis said
last month that two countries were considered favorites to soon reach a
rapprochement with Israel, but refused to name them.US President Donald
Trump said after the Israel-UAE-Bahrain signing ceremony in September
that he expected “seven or eight or nine” more countries to normalize
ties with Israel, including Saudi Arabia.
Government to fund
settler efforts to monitor illegal Palestinian construction-Settlement
Affairs Ministry says it will devote $6 million for new program in Area
C, including for patrolmen, vehicles and drones-By TOI staff-2 January
2021, 9:52 pm
The government has announced it will fund
settlements’ efforts to monitor illegal Palestinian construction in Area
C — regions controlled by Israel under the Oslo Accards — using patrols
and drones. The Settlement Affairs Ministry announced Thursday that it
was devoting NIS 20 million ($6 million) to build the new program.“With
Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu’s approval, we are going in with
full momentum to the campaign against the hostile takeover of Area C,”
Settlement Affairs Minister Tzachi Hanegbi said.Local councils in the
West Bank will be able to apply to receive funding for patrolmen,
vehicles, drones, fencing and electronic measures to monitor Palestinian
construction. Councils will also be able to hire outside advisers on
patrols and data collection. The councils will not be allowed to take
action against any illegal construction, but rather can inform Israeli
authorities who are in charge of enforcement.Haaretz said the Civil
Administration, which oversees such matters, was not consulted on the
move.Haaretz said several local councils already operate such teams
independently. The majority of settlements and outposts are located on
land defined by the 1995 Oslo II Accord as Area C, meaning Israel is
responsible for both civil and security matters in the zone. Area C
constitutes around 60 percent of the West Bank.Between 200,000-300,000
Palestinians are estimated to live in Area C, although a definitive
census has not been conducted. While some Palestinian communities in
Area C are recognized by the state, most are not, as the Israeli
military government rarely approves plans for them or issues
construction permits. According to the human rights group Bimkom, 98.6%
of requests by West Bank Palestinians for construction permits between
2016 and 2018 were rejected.
Iran claims Israeli agents
‘plotting attacks’ on US in Iraq to spark conflict-FM Zarif warns Trump
to avoid Jerusalem’s ‘trap,’ says it will ‘backfire badly’ on Israeli
‘BFFs,’ amid heightened regional tensions between Tehran and US and
Israeli allies-By TOI staff and Agencies-2 January 2021, 5:25 pm
Iranian
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed Saturday that Israeli
agents were planning to attack American targets in order to instigate an
aggressive US reaction against Iran and spark armed conflict, warning
President Donald Trump to avoid such a “trap.”And he warned that any
attack against the Islamic Republic by the US would “backfire badly” on
Washington’s “BFFs” (an initialism for “best friends forever”), in an
apparent reference to the Jewish state.“New intelligence from Iraq
indicate (sic) that Israeli agent-provocateurs are plotting attacks
against Americans — putting an outgoing Trump in a bind with a fake
casus belli,” Zarif tweeted.“Be careful of a trap, [Trump]. Any

Javad Zarif (@JZarif) January 2, 2021-The US is Israel’s top global

in general and on the threat posed by Iran in particular, sharing
intelligence and working together to counter Tehran militarily — making
Zarif’s claims highly dubious.US officials have expressed concern that
Iran may be planning attacks against US-allied targets in neighboring
Iraq or elsewhere in the region. In recent weeks the US military has
taken a range of steps designed to deter Iran, while publicly
emphasizing that it is not planning, and has not been instructed, to
take unprovoked action against Iran.US President Donald Trump has warned
Iran against any attack, and the US has flown strategic bombers over
the Persian Gulf in a show of force meant to deter Iran from attacking
American or allied targets in the Middle East.A US nuclear submarine

heated in recent weeks as Israel and the US have traded threats with
Iran ahead of the 1-year anniversary of the US airstrike that killed top
Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.Iranian officials have issued a stream
of threats against the US as the anniversary of Soleimani’s death
approaches. The general was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad on
January 3 of last year.A Friday report on Kan News said the Israeli
military was preparing for the possibility of a strike by Iran-backed
militias based in Iraq or Yemen.Possible attacks being prepared for
include missile and drone strikes from Iraqi militias and Houthi groups
in Yemen, the report said.Iran has also threatened to attack Israel
since the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen
Fakhrizadeh, in late November, in a raid blamed on the Jewish
state.Further ratcheting up tensions, the UN nuclear watchdog said
Friday that Iran intends to produce uranium enriched up to 20 percent
purity, well beyond the threshold set by the 2015 Vienna accord and a
short jump from weapons-grade material. The Friday report from Kan echoed
comments made last week by IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman, who told a
Saudi news outlet that Israel was not aware of any specific plans by
Iran to attack the Jewish state, but that Iranian forces could carry out
an attack from Iraq or Yemen. He said Israel had information indicating
Iran was developing unmanned aerial vehicles and “smart missiles” in
Iraq and Yemen, and that the weapons could have the ability to strike
Israel.Zilberman said Israel was tracking Iranian movements around the
region, and that Israeli submarines were quietly “sailing everywhere.”
His interview came after an Israeli submarine reportedly openly crossed
the Suez Canal in a show of force directed at Iran.A day after the
interview was published, an unnamed Iranian official told Al Jazeera
that “Tehran’s response to any attack on national security will be
strong and wide.”
