Netanyahu to speak with
Gallant after row over post-war Gaza, again vows no PA role-Asked if he
still trusts defense minister, PM responds evasively: ‘What I have to
say to him I’ll first say one-on-one’; right-wing protesters outside
Kirya urge Gallant’s ouster-By ToI Staff Today, 6:37 am-MAY 17,24
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he will soon speak
face-to-face with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who demanded a day
earlier that the premier publicly rule out the possibility of Israeli
military or civilian rule in Gaza, suggesting instead that “Palestinian
entities” and other “international actors” should govern the Strip. While
visiting an area close to the Gaza border, Netanyahu was asked by a
reporter if he still trusts Gallant and whether they can still work
together, but responded evasively.“If you’re talking about what the
defense minister said yesterday, then what I have to say to him I’ll
first say one-on-one, and not here,” he said.Asked if that meeting will
come soon, the prime minister said, “Absolutely.”Netanyahu’s public
disagreement with Gallant came about after the premier dismissed any
discussions of the “day after” in Gaza as meaningless until Hamas is
defeated.Hours later, in a televised address, the defense minister told
Netanyahu that he must take “tough decisions” to advance non-Hamas
governance of Gaza, whatever the personal or political cost because the
gains of the war are being eroded and Israel’s long-term security is at
stake.Gallant warned in his address that he will not consent to Israeli
civil or military governance of Gaza, and that governance by non-Hamas
Palestinian entities, accompanied by international actors, is in
Israel’s interest.Netanyahu quickly retorted that he was “not prepared
to switch from Hamastan to Fatahstan,” referencing the Fatah-dominated
Palestinian Authority.Netanyahu again echoed that same sentiment on
Thursday, after a reporter said Gallant was essentially advocating for
the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza.Repeating his frequent
summation that the PA “funds terrorism, supports terrorism, educates for
terrorism,” Netanyahu accused it of “running a global campaign against
us — at the World Court in The Hague and at all the institutions of the
UN that are coming to choke us.”Letting the PA back into Gaza “after
what happened there” would be “a prize for terror,” he said, warning
that what happened in 2007 when Hamas booted out the Palestinian
Authority and seized control of the Gaza Strip would happen again should
it be allowed to return.“We’re not making that mistake again…. If
somebody wants to bring in the PA, they should say so clearly,” he said,
referring to Gallant’s accusation that he refuses to make decisions on a
post-Hamas Gaza. “That’s a decision I refuse to make.”In the wake of
Gallant’s statement, some right-wing lawmakers have urged Netanyahu to
fire the defense minister for what would be the second time in 14
months. In late March 2023, Netanyahu fired Gallant for warning that the
divides in Israeli society caused by the coalition’s judicial overhaul
plans posed a “clear, immediate and tangible threat to the security of
the state.” His termination was met with public outrage and was
short-lived as he was rehired two weeks later.A group of right-wing
Israelis staged a protest outside the Kirya military headquarters in Tel
Aviv on Thursday evening, calling for Gallant’s removal from
government. Several protesters sported Likud flags — the party to which
Gallant belongs — while others held signs calling for his termination. At
the same time as pressure mounts to formulate a plan for post-Hamas
Gaza, the Israeli offensive in Rafah, where four of Hamas’s six
remaining battalions are believed to be located, has continued inching
forward despite deep misgivings from Israel’s allies.Speaking to IDF
troops on the Gaza border, Netanyahu said on Thursday that the offensive
in Rafah was “critical.”“This battle, of which you are an integral
part, is a battle that will decide many things in this campaign,” he
said, telling the soldiers that Rafah was the lifeline on which the
terror group depends.Gallant too, addressed the Rafah operation in a
conversation with troops on Thursday, vowing that the operation would
intensify.“Hamas is not an organization that can replenish itself now,”
he said. “It has no reserves, no ability to produce weapons, no
supplies, no armaments; it can’t treat its wounded terrorists, and this
means that we’ll go and wear them down.”Israel’s war cabinet — comprised
of Netanyahu, Gallant and minister Benny Gantz — were slated to meet on
Thursday evening to discuss the Rafah offensive. According to a report
from Channel 12, the meeting was due to focus on mapping out a wider
offensive, pending US approval of such a move.Among others, the US and
EU have warned Israel against launching a full-scale offensive inside
the southernmost Gaza city, the population of which swelled to more than
one million people throughout the months of war as civilians fled the
fighting.Israel hopes to bring US National Security Adviser Jake
Sullivan around to the idea of an expanded operation in Rafah when he
visits at the start of next week, Channel 12 reported on Thursday.
However, Washington said earlier this week it had received assurances
that the offensive wouldn’t be widened before Sullivan’s visit. Also
Thursday, Netanyahu was asked why, unlike the chief of staff and Shin
Bet head, he has refused to state that he was responsible for the
catastrophe of October 7: “The government is responsible for protecting
Israel’s security. The IDF and the security branches are responsible for
protecting Israel’s security,” he replied. “Clearly, there was a
failure here. As for assigning responsibility, the degree of
responsibility, all those things, everybody, me included, will have to
give answers to tough questions.”

Spain
denies port of call to ship carrying arms to Israel-Madrid’s foreign

Spain refused permission for a ship carrying arms
to Israel to dock at a Spanish port, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel
Albares said on Thursday.“This is the first time we have done this
because it is the first time we have detected a ship carrying a shipment
of arms to Israel that wants to call at a Spanish port,” he told
reporters in Brussels.“This will be a consistent policy with any ship
carrying arms to Israel that wants to call at Spanish ports. The foreign
ministry will systematically reject such stopovers for one obvious
reason. The Middle East does not need more weapons, it needs more
peace,” he added. The Spanish minister did not provide details on the
ship but Transport Minister Oscar Puente said it was the Marianne Danica
that had requested permission to call at the southeastern port of
Cartagena on May 21.El Pais newspaper said the Danish-flagged ship was
carrying 27 tons of explosive material from Madras in India to the port
of Haifa in Israel. The announcement that permission had been denied
comes amid a row between Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists and
his coalition partners, the hard-left Sumar party, over another ship,
the Borkum, which is due to dock in Cartagena on Friday.Pro-Palestinian
groups say the Borkum is carrying arms to Israel, prompting Sumar to
demand that it be turned away. But Puente said the Borkum was
transporting military material to the Czech Republic, not Israel.Spain
has been one of Europe’s most critical voices about Israel’s Gaza
offensive and is working to rally other European capitals behind the
idea of recognizing a Palestinian state. The Gaza war began on October 7
when Hamas terrorists stormed into southern Israel, murdering some 1,200
people, mostly civilians, and taking 253 hostages. The Hamas-run Gaza
health ministry says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been
killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some
24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which
cannot be verified as it does not differentiate between terrorists and
civilians, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has
killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists
inside Israel on October 7.
You are here-Israel ‘Eye to Eye’ Connections: Record Floods and Tornadoes-MAY 17,24
U.S.
President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken have been
applying significant pressure on Israel, especially in April and May.
They have been calling for an Israeli cease fire and hostage deal with
Hamas. Moreover, Blinken has been working on continuing the U.S.-backed
Israel-Saudi normalization agreement with the Saudis and preparing for
two-state talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Furthermore, the
Biden administration has held up the delivery of precision equipment and
ammunition to Israel (JNS). While the U.S. effort was happening in
Israel, the U.S. experienced the second-largest April tornado outbreak
in history with 300 tornadoes. There were 929 severe weather events in
the United States from April 2 to May 2, 2024.
There were 757
tornadoes in April 2011. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan
Rice had stated publicly at the U.N. that February that the United
States rejected the legitimacy of Israel communities in Judea and
Samaria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had previously said on ABC
that these Israeli communities were illegitimate and called for a
two-state plan―and hosted the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Washington,
D.C., April 12, 2011, which once again called for a two-state solution
in Israel. She said, “Neither Israel’s future as a Jewish democratic
state, nor the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians can be secured
without a negotiated two state solution.” Rice and Clinton’s
illegitimacy claims set the stage and became the mantra for the Obama
administration. National Security Advisor Tommy Vietor said on April 4,
“Not only are continued Israeli communities illegitimate; they run
counter to efforts to resume direct negotiations” (Eye to Eye,
290–92).On May 1–2, 2024, while Blinken was in Israel, the Houston area
(The Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar LandMSA covers 9,444 square miles,
larger than New Jersey) experienced massive rains and subsequent floods,
the largest floods since August 2017 and June 2001. In late August 2017
Hurricane Harvey developed quickly out of a remnant of a storm while
Jared Kushner was meeting with Middle East leaders in Saudi Arabia,
Qatar, UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinians on the Trump
two-state plan. Harvey was the second-costliest weather event in U.S.
history (Eye to Eye, 394–96).On June 6, 2001, when Tropical Storm
Allison hit Houston with record floods, CIA director George Tenet was in
Israel negotiating a cease-fire agreement between Israel and the
Palestinians.
2 hurt as barrage of 75 rockets fired at north;
IDF strike on Hezbollah said to kill 3-Iron Dome intercepts dozens of
rockets in major Hezbollah barrage from Lebanon; Israeli strikes came
after several drones were launched from Lebanon early Friday morning-By
Emanuel Fabian-Today, 3:15 pm-MAY 17,24
A major barrage of some
75 rockets was fired toward northern Israel Friday afternoon, after
Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon were reported to kill three
people.According to the IDF, dozens of the rockets were intercepted by
the Iron Dome defense system. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said
it treated two people lightly hurt after they were wounded by one of
the rocket impacts in the Upper Galilee. They were taken to Ziv Medical
Center in Safed, MDA said. The barrage is one of the largest carried out
by Hezbollah on northern Israel amid the war.Sirens sounded in the
central Golan Heights community of Katzrin and several towns closer to
the Lebanon border.Katzrin is more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) from
the Lebanon border.Three separate drone strikes on a coastal village in
southern Lebanon earlier Friday killed three people, including two
Syrian citizens, Lebanese security officials said. The strikes on the
village of Najjarieh, about 40 kilometers (28 miles) north of the
Israeli border, came a day after an especially intense exchange of
cross-border strikes between Hezbollah and Israel.Numerous Iron Dome
interceptions reported over northern Israel, following sirens in Katzrin
in the central Golan Heights and several towns near the Lebanon border

Fabian (@manniefabian) May 17, 2024-The strikes hit a vehicle, a field
and a small brick factory where two Syrian workers were killed, the
officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with
regulations. The Israeli military confirmed carrying out strikes against
facilities in Najjarieh, which it said were used by a Hezbollah air
defense unit. According to the Israel Defense Forces, several Hezbollah
operatives were gathered at the sites in the coastal town, south of
Sidon.“These compounds were used by Hezbollah’s air defense array, and
posed a threat to Israeli aircraft,” the IDF said. The Lebanese man was
identified as Hussein Khader Mahdi, a Hezbollah operative who was the
owner of the factory. Hezbollah announced Mahdi’s death “on the road to
Jerusalem,” its term for operatives slain in Israeli strikes.Mahdi’s
deaths bring the terror group’s toll since the beginning of the war in
the Gaza Strip to 301.The IDF said Hezbollah’s air defenses are located
within “a civilian environment, while risking the lives of civilians in
southern Lebanon.”“The IDF will not tolerate a violation of aerial
operational freedom and will operate to defend against any threat. We
warn the citizens of Lebanon to refrain from cooperation with the
Hezbollah terrorist organization and emphasize that in doing so, they
endanger themselves and their surroundings,” the military added. The
strikes came after several drones were launched from Lebanon at the
Western Galilee early Friday morning. According to the IDF, at least one
of the drones was downed by air defenses over the sea and a second
drone crashed near the northern community of Ga’aton.Another siren
sounded shortly later, but the IDF said it was a false alarm.Hezbollah
has regularly been launching explosives-laden drones into Israel.Since
October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and
military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group
saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. So far, the
skirmishes on the border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the
Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists.
There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any
injuries.Hezbollah has named 300 members who have been killed by Israel
during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria.
Mahdi’s death on Friday would raise the number to 301.Another 60
operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 60
civilians, three of whom were journalists, have also been killed in
Lebanon.Agencies contributed to this report.
After US, Canada

Canada announced Thursday for the first
time sanctions against Israeli settlers accused of committing acts of
violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The United Kingdom,
France, the European Union and the United States have taken similar
measures in recent months.“The rise in violence by extremist Israeli
settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank is deeply troubling and
poses significant risks to peace and security in the region,” Canadian
Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in the statement.“With these
measures, we are sending a clear message that acts of extremist settler
violence are unacceptable and that perpetrators of such violence will
face consequences.”The sanctions include a ban on transactions with the
settlers and on their entry into Canada.Among those targeted is David
Chai Chasdai, accused of instigating a riot in the Palestinian town of
Huwara, south of Nablus, leading to the death of a Palestinian
civilian.Three others, Zvi Bar Yosef, Moshe Sharvit and Yinon Levi, also
face US sanctions and are accused of repeatedly harassing, assaulting
and threatening local Palestinians.Israel has maintained control over

and around 490,000 Israeli settlers live there in communities considered
illegal under international law.Settler violence in the West Bank was
already at a more than 15-year high in 2023 and surged further after the
Israel-Hamas war began on October 7.At least 491 Palestinians have been
killed by Israeli forces or settlers across the West Bank, Palestinian
authorities say, since Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel, most
in violent clashes with Israeli troops, but a few were shot dead by
settlers during altercations.Since October 7, troops have arrested some
4,000 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than
1,700 affiliated with Hamas.
IAF to probe how half-ton bomb fell
off fighter jet onto southern border town-Military announces
investigation into ‘unusual’ incident after unexploded ordinance found
in community near Gaza-By Emanuel Fabian-Today, 7:41 pm-MAY 17,24
The
Israeli Air Force said it will carry out an “in-depth” investigation
after a half-ton bomb fell off a fighter jet and landed in the Gaza
border community of Yated on Friday morning. The bomb fell off a fighter
jet amid operations over Gaza, with images showing it landed very close
to homes.“This morning, during an attack by a fighter jet in the Rafah
area, a munition fell in the community of Yated,” the military said in a
statement. It noted the munition did not explode and was safely
collected by Israeli forces.“Air Force technical teams arrived at the
scene and began an in-depth investigation of the incident,” the
statement continued, adding that the investigation will be presented to
IAF chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar.The IDF described the incident as
“unusual,” and that the circumstances surrounding it “will be examined
in depth.”The strike in Rafah was carried out moments later, the
military said.
Soldier slain in north Gaza as IDF battles Hamas
in war’s ‘most violent’ fighting yet-Terror operatives launch massive
numbers of RPGs at Israeli tanks in Jabaliya camp, an area troops did
not reach in initial ground offensive-By Emanuel Fabian-Today, 6:32
pmUpdated at 7:37 pm-MAY 17,24
An Israeli soldier was killed
during fighting in the northern Gaza Strip on Friday, the military
announced, as troops pushed deeper into Jabaliya and expanded
“operational control” in the area over the past day.Officers described
the fighting in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya as some of the most intense
amid the ongoing war, with Hamas operatives launching massive numbers of
RPGs at tanks and armored vehicles. The slain soldier was Sgt. Ben
Avishay, 20, of the Paratroopers Brigade’s signals company, from
Nahariya.Amid the operation in Jabaliya, being carried out by the 98th
Division, the Israel Defense Forces said its fighter jets and drones
struck a weapons depot and killed several gunmen who had launched
mortars at troops in the area.Late Saturday, tanks of the 7th Armored
Brigade rolled into Jabaliya, an area that the military had previously
operated in and claimed to have dismantled Hamas’s local battalions. The
latest operation, however, was focused on areas deep in the Jabaliya
refugee camp, which the IDF did not reach during the initial ground
offensive. The IDF has so far reported killing more than 200 gunmen in
the area — at least 60 of whom were killed by the 7th Brigade — and it
estimated there may be several hundred more. The fighting was described
as “intense” and the “most violent” amid the war, with many engagements,
both above ground and by operatives using tunnels. The Jabaliya camp
also has many narrow alleys, making it challenging for tanks to operate
there. The operatives were mostly launching RPGs at tanks, but also
setting up explosive devices. The 7th Brigade’s Merkava tanks, with the
TROPHY active defense system, were largely managing to withstand the RPG
attacks, with only a few cases of troops being injured, according to
the military. On Friday morning, a soldier of the 460th Armored Brigade’s
9227th Battalion was seriously wounded during a battle with terror
operatives in Jabaliya, the military announcedHe was taken to a hospital
in Israel.Hamas operatives have also been launching attacks from within
or near humanitarian shelters in Jabaliya, according to the army. The
shelters have since been evacuated of civilians. The IDF said troops of
the 101st Paratroopers Battalion, operating alongside the tank forces,
located a rocket depot adjacent to one of the shelters. Dozens of
long-range rockets and rocket parts were found at the site, it says.At
the adjacent shelter, some 20 suspected terror operatives were detained
by troops, the IDF added. Some 40 suspects total were captured in
Jabaliya in recent days.Meanwhile, on Friday, one rocket fired from the
Gaza Strip at the southern city of Sderot was intercepted by the Iron
Dome, according to the IDF.Palestinian terrorists have been repeatedly
attacking Sderot in recent days, as the IDF pushed into Jabaliya, where
residents told Reuters that Israeli armor had thrust as far as the
market at the heart of Jabaliya and that bulldozers were demolishing
homes and shops in the path of the advance.Meanwhile, in southern Gaza’s
Rafah, the 162nd Division’s 401st Armored Brigade located and destroyed
a rocket launching position, according to the military. The IDF said
the site was used to fire long-range rockets at Israel.Israel says four
of Hamas’s six remaining battalions are now in Rafah along with hostages
abducted during the terror group’s October 7 massacre, but it faces
international pressure not to invade the city, where hundreds of
thousands of displaced Palestinian civilians are sheltering amid the
ongoing war. Two more Hamas battalions remain in central Gaza, in the
Nuseirat and Deir al-Balah camps. The United Nations says that over
600,000 Gazans have evacuated the city since the IDF began operations
there last week by taking over the Palestinian side of the Rafah Border
Crossing. Also Friday, the military said it demolished a tunnel in
central Gaza this week, amid an operation in Gaza City’s Zeitoun
neighborhood. The week-long operation, carried out by the Nahal and
Carmeli brigades, was wrapped up on Thursday. The IDF said troops
demolished Hamas sites, including attack tunnels, weapon manufacturing
sites, rocket launchers, and command rooms amid the pinpoint raid.IDF
Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Tuesday that some 150 terror
operatives were killed in Zeitoun.Additionally, over the past day, the
Israeli Air Force hit some 60 targets across Gaza, including buildings
used by terror groups, weapon depots, anti-tank launch posts, and other
infrastructure, as well as gunmen, according to the IDF.The war in Gaza
erupted after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw thousands of
terrorists burst across the border into Israel, killing some 1,200
people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of
brutality and sexual assault. Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas to
ensure it no longer poses a threat, but is also involved in indirect
talks with the group aimed at an extended truce and exchange of hostages
for Palestinian security prisoners. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry
says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are
presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities
have been identified at hospitals. The tolls, which cannot be verified,
include some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in
battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel
on October 7.Two hundred and eighty Israeli soldiers have been killed
during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid operations along the
Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed
in the Strip.Agencies contributed to this report.
Gallant said
to warn ministers that military rule in Gaza would cost ‘many
lives’Hebrew media says defense minister walked out of security cabinet
meeting after criticism from far-right ministers, Likud allies of PM,
for his ‘day after’ war plans-By ToI Staff Today, 6:26 pm-MAY 17,24
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly to convene the war cabinet on
Saturday night for a further discussion of Defense Minister Yoav
Gallant’s vision for Gaza after the war, according to Hebrew media
reports Friday. He reportedly said the issue was too complex and time
too short for sufficient discussion at Thursday night’s meeting.Saturday
night’s meeting will also focus on the currently deadlocked efforts to
negotiate a deal for the release of hostages held by Hamas, after that
issue, too, was not discussed at sufficient length on Thursday, the
reports said.At a meeting of the security cabinet that followed the war
cabinet session, meanwhile, several ministers castigated Gallant over
his demand Wednesday that Netanyahu rule out Israeli military and
civilian rule in the Palestinian enclave after the war, with Otzma
Yehudit leader Itamar Ben Gvir repeating his demand that Gallant be
fired.According to some Hebrew media reports, Gallant walked out of the
security cabinet meeting at one juncture. The Israel Hayom daily said
Gallant’s plans for the “day after” in Gaza include providing weapons to
local figures tied to the Palestinian Authority with international
oversight. In his speech on Wednesday, Gallant said it was in Israel’s
best interests for Gaza to be governed by non-Hamas “Palestinian
entities,” backed by “international actors.”The report claimed that
Gallant’s plan, backed by the defense establishment, would include
providing these groups with guns, which would be electronically
monitored by Israel to prevent them from being used by Hamas, and would
be part of an overall international effort to help govern the Strip led
by Arab nations and backed by the US.Explaining his stance during the
security cabinet meeting, Gallant reportedly warned that Israeli
military rule in Gaza would require the deployment of massive
forces.“We’ll pay for it with many lives, and in the end, we’ll withdraw
from the territory and leave it to the Palestinians. Military rule will
mean loss of life and neglecting other fronts,” he was quoted as
sayings.According to a report cited by the Ynet news site, the price tag
of running a military government in Gaza would be an estimated NIS 20
billion (around $5.4 billion) per year. In addition, Israel would have
to shell out a yet-to-be-determined amount on rebuilding and repairing
infrastructure in the enclave. The report also stated that 400 people
would be needed to staff the military government and five IDF divisions
would have to remain in Gaza, requiring Israel to shrink the number of
troops on the northern border and in the West Bank, as well as
necessitate a significant increase in the deployment of reservists on
operational duty.At the security cabinet meeting, Ben Gvir reportedly
said that he didn’t understand “how the defense minister allows himself
to speak like this, when he knows the majority of the cabinet is against
him on the ‘day after’ plan.”Transportation Minister Miri Regev, a
close Likud ally of Netanyahu’s, reportedly criticized Gallant for
making his public statement on Wednesday, and told him his
responsibility was “to convince this forum” of ministers that his was
the right path ahead.Gallant responded that he had a “public
responsibility to explain the situation, if we’re going in a dangerous
direction for Israel’s security,” before reportedly walking out.The
security cabinet meeting came after Netanyahu said earlier Thursday that
he would soon speak face-to-face with Gallant. While visiting an area
close to the Gaza border, Netanyahu was asked by a reporter if he still
trusts Gallant and whether they can still work together.“If you’re
talking about what the defense minister said yesterday, then what I have
to say to him I’ll first say one-on-one, and not here,” he responded. In
his televised address on Wednesday, the defense minister told Netanyahu
that he must take “tough decisions” to advance non-Hamas governance of
Gaza, whatever the personal or political cost, because the gains of the
war are being eroded and Israel’s long-term security is at stake.Gallant
warned that he would not consent to Israeli civil or military
governance of Gaza, and advocated governance by non-Hamas Palestinian
entities, accompanied by international actors.Netanyahu quickly retorted
that he was “not prepared to switch from Hamastan to Fatahstan,”
referencing the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority.Several right-wing
lawmakers have urged Netanyahu to fire the defense minister, for what
would be the second time in 14 months.
ICJ expected to rule next
week-Israel pans Gaza ‘distortions’ at World Court, says Pretoria aims
to keep Hamas in power-Jerusalem points to efforts to supply aid as
proof genocide claims are false, says petition would deny Israel right
to self-defense, let Hamas keep attacking, likely seal hostages’ fate-By
Jeremy Sharon-Today, 3:50 pm-MAY 17,24
Israel lambasted South
Africa at the International Court of Justice on Friday over what it said
was Pretoria’s “outrageous distortions” of the truth and “abuse” of the
court’s procedures, during the latest hearings in The Hague over South
African allegations of genocide against Jerusalem.South Africa alleged
in court on Thursday that Israel’s current limited offensive in the
southern Gaza city of Rafah is Jerusalem’s “end game” in its effort to
commit genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, by destroying what the
South African team described as the last habitable area of the coastal
enclave. It has asked the court to order Israel to halt its military
operation.Responding on Friday, the Israeli legal team accused South
Africa of ignoring the fact that it is continuing to facilitate the
transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and said Pretoria was trying to
contort international law through the Genocide Convention in order to
have the ICJ “micromanage” the war with Hamas, which Israel’s
representatives insisted was far beyond the remit of the court. The
Israeli attorneys also pointed out that South Africa recently hosted
Hamas officials in Johannesburg and alleged that Pretoria was allied
with Hamas. They said the country’s repeated requests for the court to
order Israel to halt its military operations against the terror group
demonstrated South Africa’s desire to preserve Hamas rule in
Gaza.Israel’s team informed the court that both the Israel Defense
Forces’ legal department and an independent Israeli commission were
investigating dozens of incidents of alleged criminal misconduct by
Israeli forces during the current conflict, while Israel’s civilian law
enforcement agencies have decided to conduct legal proceedings over some
expressions of incitement by citizens. This, they said, proved that
Israel’s justice system was capable and willing to tackle any wrongdoing
amid the war.“South Africa presents the court for the fourth time with a
picture that is completely divorced from the facts and circumstances,”
Israel’s Deputy Attorney General for International Law Gilad Noam told
the court.Noam accused Hamas of deliberately putting Palestinian
civilians in harm’s way as a tactic in its war against Israel, noting
that “rocket sites, tunnel shafts, command and control sites are all
embedded among the civilian population in Rafah.”He said Israel had long
held off on a wide-scale operation in Rafah due to its desire to avoid
harming civilians, and its ongoing preparations to deal with the
challenges it will face in such an assault.“By exploiting the genocide
convention, South Africa is suggesting a convoluted reading of
international law, under which any conflict can be brought to this
court,” said Noam.“The absurd result is that Israel would be denied its
inherent right to defense and Hamas for its part would remain free to
continue committing its horrific crimes.”Noam told the judges that the
purpose of the Genocide Convention was “not to have the court supervise
the conduct of armed hostilities” by claims of genocide, and that even
though there was a “tragic war going on… there is no genocide.”He warned
the court that if it acceded to South Africa’s request, it may find
itself “engaged in the micromanagement of operational aspects of an
armed conflict.”Noam also drew attention to Pretoria’s close ties to
Hamas, stating that South Africa had hosted Hamas officials in
Johannesburg at an anti-apartheid conference on May 9, and alleged that
South Africa’s foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, met with some of those
officials.“They did not use the meeting to urge Hamas to release
hostages, stop targeting Israeli civilians, cease using human shields,
cease operating in United Nations facilities, hospitals and other
protected sites. They apparently met to discuss their continuing
campaign against Israel in court and on the ground,” accused Noam.South
Africa, Noam said, “is not interested in truth, law or
justice.”Addressing specific allegations made by South Africa about
Israel’s supposed genocidal actions, Foreign Ministry legal adviser
Tamar Kaplan Tourgeman said South Africa had falsely accused Israel of
“cutting off” Gaza from the outside world and humanitarian aid in recent
days, citing in particular a temporary closure of the Kerem Shalom
Crossing in its application to the court and its oral arguments
yesterday. That crossing was closed after rocket attacks by terror groups
in recent days, but is now operating again. In contradiction of
Pretoria’s claims, she noted that humanitarian aid and fuel have
continued to enter Gaza through Israel, including 365 trucks of aid that
entered Thursday, 330 of them through Kerem Shalom itself.Kaplan
Tourgeman also noted that Israel had opened three new land crossings
into Gaza from Israeli territory in recent weeks, expanded capacity of
the existing crossings, and spent $52 million on expanding
infrastructure and road capacity to all crossings.“Is this what a
hermetic closure looks like?” she demanded, while glaring at the South
African legal team.“It is not difficult to see that Israel has been
making additional efforts to increase the provision of humanitarian aid
throughout Gaza. South Africa’s complete disregard of this reality and
truth is as telling as it is alarming,” Kaplan Tourgeman said.Addressing
South Africa’s claims that Israel has genocidal intent, Noam accused it
of having “consistently cherry-picked” statements by Israeli officials
to attribute genocidal intent to Israel. Such statements, he said, were
either taken out of context or clearly referring to a desire to destroy
Hamas specifically, and not Palestinians in general.South Africa on
Thursday cited recent inflammatory comments by Finance Minister Bezalel
Smotrich about destroying Rafah and other Gazan cities, and played a
video in court showing IDF soldiers singing that they will “dismantle
Rafah,” as evidence of supposed genocidal intent by Israel towards
Palestinians.Noam said that Israel has “made repeatedly clear” that war
policy and “instructions for conducting hostilities” emanated from the
security cabinet and war cabinet only “and not from various social media
accounts or interviews.”And Kaplan Tourgeman pointed to a decision by
the security cabinet on April 4 which stated that Israel would increase
efforts to “allow and facilitate transfer of humanitarian aid for the
civilian population in the Gaza strip,” and establish a ministerial team
to “implement the policy of the government regarding the transfer of
humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip.”“The decisions of the Israeli cabinet
and their implementation on the ground leave no doubt that South
Africa’s allegations about genocide are completely and utterly
baseless,” said Kaplan Tourgeman.“South Africa is trying once more to
drag this court down a very dangerous path. It will have you say that a
sovereign state under consistent attack, whose citizens are held hostage
in brutal conditions, cannot defend its citizens,” concluded Kaplan
Tourgeman.“There is no international law to this effect. Acceding to
South Africa’s request would be an affront to the very protection
afforded by the law. It would enable Hamas battalions to continue to
target Israel, attack humanitarian crossings, condemn Palestinians in
Gaza to eternal war and condemn the hostages to almost certain
death.”South Africa on Thursday demanded that the court order Israel to
cease not only its military operation in Rafah but its entire campaign
against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.A ruling is expected next week.
NYC
deputy mayor: Washington Post report on Columbia contains ‘antisemitic
tropes’Post report alleged Jewish billionaires used their money and
power to influence Mayor Eric Adams to take action against student
protests-By ToI Staff Today, 12:22 pm-MAY 17,24
A New York City
deputy mayor has attacked The Washington Post for a report he said
employed antisemitic tropes, as it suggested Jewish billionaires were
using their money and power to influence elected officials in their
treatment of student protesters against Israel at Columbia
University.Fabien Levy, who gave the Post a statement saying their
report was “completely false,” took to X Thursday to state that he was
“shocked when the inquiry came in.”“The insinuation that Jewish donors
secretly plotted to influence government operations is an all too
familiar antisemitic trope that The Washington Post should have been
ashamed to ask about, let alone actually publish,” he wrote.Levy went on
to say that “the story is even more offensive than initially described
to us” and clarified that both times police were called into Columbia it
was at the “specific written requests from Columbia University to do
so.”The report in question, which was published on Thursday, described
the activities of a WhatsApp group set up after October 7 in which
participants, who were mostly Jewish billionaires, coordinated how they
could use their resources to help Israel fight its battle for public
diplomacy abroad.“The messages offer a window into how some prominent
individuals have wielded their money and power in an effort to shape
American views of the Gaza war, as well as the actions of academic,
business and political leaders — including New York’s mayor,” the report
said.Exclusive: A group of billionaires and business titans working to
shape U.S. public opinion of the war in Gaza privately pressed New York
City’s Mayor Eric Adams (D) last month to send police to disperse
pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University. https://t.co/PWgvkAwVG0
— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) May 16, 2024-Titled “Israel
Current Events,” the group was reportedly started by real estate magnate
Barry Sternlicht a few days after October 7 and closed at the beginning
of May. An unnamed person close to Sternlicht told The Post that the
group was closed because it had moved past its founding objective and
the original participants hadn’t been active in months. In messages from
the group seen by The Post, a staffer for Sternlicht originally told the
group that the goal was to “change the narrative” to help Israel with
its public diplomacy. Some members of the group met with Israeli
officials, such as former prime minister Naftali Bennett and war cabinet
minister Benny Gantz, for briefings on how they could help. The
messages in the group also showed that its participants were
instrumental in helping Israel arrange screenings of the IDF’s 45-minute
documentary of October 7 Hamas atrocities, made of footage taken from
security cameras and terrorists’ bodycams. The documentary was made by
the IDF as part of Israel’s public diplomacy campaign and was shown to
journalists and elected officials around the world, and members of the
group helped arrange a showing at Harvard as well.Aside from helping
with Israeli public diplomacy, The Post alleged that members of the
group also made donations to New York City Mayor Eric Adams to influence
him into calling in police to remove pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel
protesters. The report alleged that they also used their influence on
Columbia leadership to convince them to ask Adams to call in the
police.According to the messages, members of the group took part in a
Zoom meeting with Adams on April 26 where they allegedly discussed
“donating to Adams, using group members’ ‘leverage’ to help persuade
Columbia’s president to let New York police back on campus and paying
for ‘investigative efforts’ to assist the city.”While a link for
donations to Adams’s campaign was shared in the group, The Post could
not confirm how many and when, if at all, its members donated. As a
private university, the NYPD can only enter Columbia to break up
protests and arrest demonstrators at the request of the institution and
cannot do so at the mayor’s request alone. The NYPD was called into
Columbia to break up protests twice in April. The first time was on
April 18, a day after pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel protesters set up
an encampment on campus grounds as part of their demonstration. More
than 100 protesters were arrested and the encampment was dismantled.Even
though it was rebuilt the next day and stayed up for weeks, the police
were not asked for assistance again until April 30, when students
vandalized and occupied Hamilton Hall. The police were called in that
night to clear the students out of the hall and dozens of protesters
were arrested.Levy in his response said reports of any other
considerations beyond the university’s request were “completely false.”
He reiterated Adams’ view that peaceful protest “has a place in our
society and will always be protected” but that as a private university,
Columbia had the right to call for police assistance if protests on its
grounds violated its rules.“The Washington Post and others can make
editorial decisions to disagree with the decisions by universities to
ask the NYPD to clear unlawful encampments on campuses, but saying Jews
‘wielded their money and power in an effort to shape American views’ is
offensive on so many levels,” he concluded. The war in Gaza was launched
on October 7 by Hamas after thousands of the group’s terrorists rampaged
through southern Israel, murdering some 1,200 people, mostly civilians,
and taking 252 hostages. In response, Israel launched a ground invasion
into the Gaza Strip with the objective of dismantling Hamas and getting
the hostages back. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than
35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the
fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified
at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified as it does not
differentiate between terrorists and civilians, includes some 15,000
terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says
it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on and around October
7.Israel has faced growing international criticism for its military
campaign in Gaza since the war began, especially in recent months as the
Palestinian enclave teeters on the brink of famine and the number of
displaced civilians continues to grow.Students at university campuses
abroad have been particularly vocal in their criticism with protests
that intensified in April with Columbia’s encampment. Many universities
across the US and Europe followed suit, with students setting up their
own encampments and occupying buildings on campus as they demanded their
institutions divest from Israel. While some universities have come to
agreements with protesters, demonstrations at Columbia persisted for
weeks with some Jewish students leaving the campus, saying they no
longer felt safe. The last couple of weeks of classes were moved online,
and the university’s main commencement ceremony was canceled.
