Iran says cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog will take 'new form'

Bangkok, July 12 (AFP) Jul 12, 2025-More than 20 civilians, including children, were killed after a recent air strike on a monastery in central Myanmar, an anti-junta fighter and a resident told AFP Saturday.Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military ousted a democratic government in 2021, and central Sagaing region has been particularly hard-hit, with the junta pummelling villages with air strikes targeting armed groups.The most recent occurred around 1:00 am Friday in Lin Ta Lu village when "the monastery hall where internally displaced people were staying" was hit with an air strike, said an anti-junta fighter, who requested anonymity for safety reasons.He told AFP that 22 people were killed, including three children, while two were wounded and remained in critical condition at the hospital."They had thought it was safe to stay at a Buddhist monastery," the anti-junta fighter said. "But they were bombed anyway."Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.A local resident confirmed that the monastery hall was "completely destroyed", adding that he saw some bodies loaded into a car and transported to a cemetery at dawn on Friday after the air strike.He said when he went to the cemetery to take photos to help with identifying the dead, he counted 22 bodies."Many of the bodies had head wounds or were torn apart. London, Paris tighten nuclear bond over US, Russia concerns.
Paris, July 10 (AFP) Jul 10, 2025-Britain and France took a key step to underpin Europe's security by agreeing to tighten nuclear cooperation, as the region frets over the US commitment to its defence and Russian ambitions.In targeting a "reboot" of defence ties with a focus on joint missile development and nuclear co-operation, while also firming up support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, Europe's two nuclear powers also hope to send a strong signal to Moscow.- What is the UK and France's nuclear stance? -Right from its inception, France's nuclear deterrent was designed to be independent, its potential deployment subject to the French president's evaluation of any perceived threat to the republic's strategic interests.According to the independent Stockholm-based Sipri Institute on global security, France has 290 nuclear warheads, some carried aboard four submarines and some by Rafale fighter jets.Britain for its part has 225 nuclear warheads. For now, the British nuclear deterrent is purely sea-based, carried by four submarines armed with ballistic missiles.However, the British government announced last month it would add an airborne component to its operational system with the purchase of 12 American F-35 fighter jets.Unlike France's, Britain's nuclear forces are fully integrated under the NATO defence umbrella to cover the Western military alliance's 32 member states.On Thursday during a visit by its President Emmanuel Macron to London, France agreed to the principle of coordination with Britain despite nominal national independence.Despite the cherished independence of the French deterrent, Macron remarked in 2020 that France's vital interests have an "authentically European dimension".In a 1995 joint declaration Paris and London acknowledged that "the vital interests of one (partner) could not be threatened without the vital interests of the other equally being at risk".- What's new? -Whereas that declaration was limited to the definition of the two neighbours' "vital interests", the latest cooperation accord goes much further.The 1995 accord "was a uniquely Franco-British declaration on a very political level", said Heloise Fayet, a researcher on nuclear issues at the French Institute for International Relations.In the latest announcement, "the reference to nuclear arms is much more visible and clear," Fayet told AFP."There are two advances: on the operational level with this coordination of the two deterrents. An Israeli fighter jet approaching Tehran amid the 12-day war with Iran last month suffered a fuel tank malfunction that almost forced it to stage an emergency landing, Channel 12 reported on Saturday, for the first time.The pilot of the F-15 fighter jet first noticed an issue with the fuel tank while already deep inside Iran’s borders, the report stated, and alerted the necessary personnel to the problem in real-time.As no aerial refueling craft had been accompanying the fighter jets on the mission, a plan was devised to dispatch one to resolve the issue, Channel 12 reported.At the same time, a second plan was drafted in case the refueling craft failed to reach the malfunctioning fighter jet in time. In this instance, the jet was to cross the border and make an emergency landing in a neighboring country, to avoid the risk involved in landing inside the Islamic Republic.The report did not identify which country was selected for the emergency landing.Ultimately, the refueling craft made it in time and was able to resolve he issue, without the pilot being required to pull out of the mission and land elsewhere.The report said that the mission was carried out successfully, without any additional issues.According to Channel 12, prior to the start of Israel’s surprise attack on Iran on June 13, which launched the 12-day war, Israeli Air Force commander Tomer Bar had presented an estimate in “internal forums” that as 10 Israeli planes could be downed within the first 72 hours of the attack.His estimate was proven wrong, however, and no Israeli planes were downed throughout the war, despite Iranian state media claiming at one point that the country’s forces down to Israeli fighter jets and captured a pilot.The claim was dismissed by the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, Col. No significant progress has been made in the ongoing hostage negotiations in Doha since Wednesday, an Arab diplomat and a second source familiar with the negotiations told The Times of Israel on Friday, as Palestinian officials said the talks were on the verge of collapse.While Israel agreed to ease some of its demands regarding the redeployment of its troops during the 60-day truce under discussion following US pressure, the new series of maps depicting the partial withdrawal of IDF troops was not sufficient to satisfy Hamas, the two sources said.The new maps still envision Israel maintaining control of roughly one-third of Gaza’s territory, including a three-kilometer (1.86-mile) buffer zone in Rafah to create a highly controversial “humanitarian city” to which Gaza’s entire population will be herded, checked for weapons and be barred from leaving as Israel will seek to encourage their emigration outside of the Strip.Channel 12 reported that Hamas agreed to expand the buffer zone Israel wants to create along much of the Gaza perimeter from 700 meters to one kilometer. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to head off new and recurring difficulties in his governing coalition, according to reports on Saturday, and is holding various meetings to dispel threats from his ultranationalist allies over the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal negotiations, and from his Haredi partners over ultra-Orthodox conscription legislation.On one front, the premier reportedly expects National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to once again pull his ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit party out of the government if another ceasefire and hostage release deal is signed with Hamas, the Kan public broadcaster reported on Saturday.Ben Gvir has been a vocal opponent of Israel signing any deal with Hamas to recover the remaining hostages and end the fighting in Gaza, even temporarily, after more than 640 days of war. Earlier this month, he was said to have attempted to persuade his far-right ally, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, to form a united bloc within the government against any such agreement.Both of the ministers have threatened to collapse the government if Israel agrees to any deal that would leave Hamas in power in Gaza, and claim to have foiled other deals that would have come to pass.Ben Gvir has pulled Otzma Yehudit from the government once already, after a ceasefire agreement was signed between Israel and Hamas in January of this year. The party returned to the coalition when fighting resumed some two months later.But now, with furious negotiations for a 60-day truce underway in Doha, Kan reported on Saturday night that Netanyahu expects him to quit again, and is trying to ensure that this won’t threaten the stability of his coalition government.To that end, both Kan and Channel 12 reported on Saturday evening that the premier had summoned Ben Gvir and Smotrich to meet with him, likely in an attempt to persuade the former to remain in government, and to dissuade the latter from following his lead if he resigns anyway.Ben Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit and Smotrich’s Religious Zionism together have 13 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, where the ruling coalition fields a majority of 67 seats. The military announced that two soldiers were moderately hurt on Saturday in separate incidents during fighting in Gaza, as fresh deaths were reported among Palestinians at an aid distribution site.One of the soldiers was hurt in the northern part of the coastal enclave, while the other was hurt in the southern part. In the latter incident, two other soldiers were lightly injured.All four were taken to hospitals, and their families were notified.The injuries came as the Israel Defense Forces said Saturday that over 250 terror targets in Gaza were hit in airstrikes since Thursday. However, Israel has also acknowledged that “several” Palestinian civilians have been killed near GHF aid distribution sites.GHF commenced operations in May as Israel lifted a nearly three-month aid blockade on Gaza, amid a renewed offensive there that seeks to take over 75% of the Strip.On Friday, the United Nations said nearly 800 people have died trying to access aid in Gaza since late May, with most killed near the GHF’s distribution sites.GHF, which denies that deadly incidents have occurred at its sites, told Reuters the UN figures were “false and misleading.”The IDF said Friday that it had issued instructions to troops in the field “following lessons learned” after reports of deadly incidents at GHF distribution facilities.Swimming restrictions-The IDF on Saturday also reiterated a restriction on Palestinians, in place since the beginning of the war, forbidding them from entering the sea along the entire coast of the Gaza Strip.The IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Col. Avichay Adraee, reminded residents in a post on X that “security restrictions have been imposed in the maritime area adjacent to the Strip, and entry into the sea is prohibited.”He added, “The IDF will respond to any violation of these restrictions. Entering the sea along the Strip exposes you to danger.”Nevertheless, the IDF has not enforced the restriction against Palestinians seeking to cool off in the waters on the beach, but only those heading out deeper into the sea.The vast majority of the Palestinian population in Gaza is concentrated in areas on the coast, with tent camps set up on the beaches.The war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists invaded Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 251. Fifty hostages remain in Gaza, including 28 whose deaths the IDF has confirmed.The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 53,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. They’re the boogeymen of science fiction, a paradox of science and quite possibly a key to understanding the universe.Scientists have been scrambling to understand the mysterious forces of black holes for decades, but so far it seems they’ve found more existential questions than answers.We know a black hole is so heavy that its gravity creates a kind of divot in the geometry of the universe, said Priyamvada Natarajan, a theoretical astrophysicist at Yale University."A black hole is so concentrated that it causes a little deep puncture in space/time. At the end of the puncture you have a thing called a singularity where all known laws of nature break down. Nothing that we know of exists at that point."Understanding what science knows about black holes involves mysterious little red dots, the formation of galaxies, and spaghettification (the unpleasant thought experiment about what would happen to a person unlucky enough to be sucked into a black hole).First, the good news: Black holes aren’t out to get us. They aren’t whizzing around the universe looking for galaxies, suns and planets to devour."They don't just sneak up to you in a dark alley," said Lloyd Knox, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California, Davis.But our understanding of the very fundamentals of the universe has been transformed over the past decade by new telescopes and sensors that are letting scientists see more black holes and at every stage of their lives."Our understanding of the role black holes play, that they are an essential part of the formation of galaxies, is new," said Natarajan.Here what cosmic secrets are being revealed:A new kind of black hole and a newly proven theory-The original understanding of how black holes formed was that when a sufficiently large sun (about 10 times or more massive than our Sun) reached the end of its life, it could explode into a supernova that then collapses back into a black hole. The matter can collapse down into something only a few miles across, becoming so dense that its gravity is strong enough that nothing, not even light, can escape. This is what is called a stellar mass black hole.But in the past two decades, new types of black holes have been seen and astronomers are beginning to understand how they form. Called supermassive black holes, they have been found at the center of pretty much every galaxy and are a hundred thousand to billion times the mass of our Sun. But how did they form?"The original idea was that small black holes formed and then they grew," said Natarajan. "But then there's a timing crunch to explain the monsters seen in the early universe. Even if they're gobbling down stellar gas, did they have the time to get so big? That was an open question even 20 years ago."In 2017, she theorized that these supermassive black holes from the early beginnings of the universe happened when galactic gas clouds collapsed directly in on themselves, skipping the star stage entirely and going straight from gas to a massive black hole seed, with a head start, that could then grow."Then guess what? In 2023 the James Webb telescope found these objects," she said. "This is what a scientist lives for, to make a prediction and see it proven."Black holes don't suck everything into them-Because they have such massive gravity, black holes gobble up stellar gases and anything else that gets too close to them. But it's not an endless process that ends up with the entire universe being sucked into them.People sometimes worry that black holes are these huge vacuum cleaners that draw in everything in sight. "It's not like a whirlpool dragging everything into it," said Knox.Black holes are really like any other concentration of mass, whether it's a sun or a planet. They have their own gravitational pull but it isn't infinite."If you're far enough away, you'd just feel the gravitational force, just the way you'd feel it from a planet," said Brenna Mockler, a post-doctoral fellow at the Carnegie Observatories at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, California.If you fell into a black hole, you'd be 'spaghettified'All matter causes a dip or pothole in space/time, said Natarajan. And then at some point it ends up just pushing itself all apart," he said."Our Sun will eventually expand and envelop the Earth and destroy it – but that’s in 5 billion years, so you have some time to get ready. But it won’t become a black hole."A still unanswered mystery – 'little red dots'NASA's super powerful James Webb Space Telescope began its scientific mission in 2022 and almost immediately picked up something that so far no one can explain: small red objects that appear to be abundant in the cosmos.Dubbed "little red dots," these objects have perplexed astronomers. In late 2022, NASA celebrated its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) as a massive success, a proof of concept for saving humanity in case a similar space rock were to ever head straight for Earth.The small spacecraft smashed into asteroid Didymos' moonlet Dimorphos at a violent 14,000 mph, knocking it severely off course.But three years later, astronomers found that the collision had some unintended consequences. As detailed in a paper published last week in the Planetary Science Journal, a team led by the University of Maryland found that the DART spacecraft ejected a massive barrage of boulders, some of which carried more than three times the energy of the spacecraft itself."We succeeded in deflecting an asteroid, moving it from its orbit," said lead author and UMD research scientist Tony Farnham in a statement about the research. "Our research shows that while the direct impact of the DART spacecraft caused this change, the boulders ejected gave an additional kick that was almost as big."The researchers warn that much like a game of pool, smashing a spacecraft into an asteroid to save the Earth could set off a powerful sequence of events that needs to be taken into account."That additional factor changes the physics we need to consider when planning these types of missions," Farnham added.Pictures taken by a tiny spacecraft called LICIACube, developed by the Italian Space Agency and which has been hanging around the impact site to assess the aftermath, allowed astronomers to track 104 boulders, which ranged anywhere from 0.6 to 11.8 feet in radius, as they hurtled away from Dimorphos.But the researchers observed something strange about the behavior of those boulders."We saw that the boulders weren't scattered randomly in space," Farnham explained. "Instead, they were clustered in two pretty distinct groups, with an absence of material elsewhere, which means that something unknown is at work here."The team hypothesizes that "DART's solar panels likely hit two big boulders, called Atabaque and Bodhran, on the asteroid," as second author and UMD astronomy professor Jessica Sunshine explained, right before DART's main body made contact.DART "hit a surface that was rocky and full of large boulders, resulting in chaotic and filamentary structures in its ejecta patterns," Sunshine added.Fortunately, thanks to the European Space Agency's Hera mission, which is scheduled to rendezvous with the asteroid system next year, we could soon have "another direct view of the impact's aftermath," Farnham said.Tasting Table-The astronomer and his colleagues are hoping to use the latest data to help their peers make more informed decisions when it comes to future deflection missions like DART."If an asteroid was tumbling toward us, and we knew we had to move it a specific amount to prevent it from hitting Earth, then all these subtleties become very, very important," Sunshine explained."You can think of it as a cosmic pool game," she added. Others, in a region long accustomed to extreme weather, were kept up by heavy bursts of rain and earsplitting cracks of thunder that shook buildings.“I thought it was just lightning and thunderstorm,” recalled Caroline Cutrona, a counselor at Camp Mystic, where young girls bonded in rustic cabins with names like the Bubble Inn and the Giggle Box. “I had no idea of the severity.”She was not alone. Still, state emergency management officials had activated emergency response resources as early as Wednesday evening, warning of potential flooding heading into the July Fourth holiday weekend. The alerts – including critical warnings the National Weather Service said gave preliminary lead times of more than three hours before flash flooding conditions occurred – would grow more dire.Torrential rains transformed the pristine Guadalupe River, unleashing roaring cascades in the predawn hours of Independence Day along 40 miles of Kerr County, claiming at least 103 lives there alone, including 36 children. The confirmed death toll in Texas was 129 as of Friday evening.At least 150 people are still missing statewide – at least 140 of them in Kerr County.More than a summer’s worth of rain had fallen in the area overnight into the holiday, swelling part of the river from about 3 feet to 30 feet in just 45 minutes and turning the beloved waterway into a killer. ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center on Saturday began forecasting a system to form later this week near Florida with a chance to develop into the season’s next tropical depression or storm.In its 8 p.m. tropical outlook, the NHC said it expects a broad area of low pressure to over the next couple of days near the southeastern U.S. coast and then move westward across Florida into the northeastern Gulf by Tuesday“Environmental conditions could support some gradual development of this system during the middle to late part of next week while it moves westward over the northeastern and north-central portions of the Gulf,” forecasters said.Regardless of whether it develops, the NHC said heavy rainfall is possible over portions of Florida and north-central Gulf Coast through mid- to late next week.The NHC gave it a 20% chance to develop in the next seven days.If it were to spin up into a named storm, it could become Tropical Storm Dexter.The state was previously doused by rains associated with what developed into Tropical Storm Chantal earlier this month. That storm ended up striking the Carolina coast and dumped flooding rains inland.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had before the start of hurricane season forecast an expected 13 to 19 named storms for the year, of which six to 10 would grow into hurricanes. Three to five of those would develop into major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher.Researchers out of Colorado State University this week, though, updated their forecast saying they expect the season to be slightly less busy than what they had predicted earlier this year.Hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30.

Police have asked the public not to contact them about incidents of people breaking the hosepipe ban ahead of what is expected to be the hottest weekend of the year with highs of 34C forecast.Temperatures reached 33C at Ross on Wye in Herefordshire on Saturday, the Met Office said, with similar temperatures expected on Sunday. Archaeologists Found a 5th-Century Church Inscribed With a Message to Early Christians-Tim Newcomb-Fri, July 11, 2025 at 9:00 AM EDT
A mosaic adorning the entrance to a fifth-century church in Turkey’s ancient city of Olympus is both just the tip of the iceberg. The mosaic itself extends from the entrance to inside the church, and it’s just one of many ruins from the time period that archeologists have recently discovered, even after years of excavating the city.As crews continued to excavate Olympus’ ancient Kumluca district, they discovered the mosaic outside the early Christian church, known as Church No. 1. The entrance bears an inscription which translates to: “Only those on the right path may enter here,” according to Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as reported by Türkiye Today.“This mosaic inscription is strategically placed at the very entrance of the church,” Gokcen Kutulus Oztaskin, associate professor at Pamukkale University and excavation director on the project, said according to Anadolu Agency.The mosaics throughout the church contain both geometric patterns and botanical motifs, stretching from the main entrance into multiple areas of the building. Additional inscriptions reveal the names of churchgoers who financially backed the construction of the church. “These finds confirm Olympus as one of the richest ancient cities in the Lycia region in terms of mosaic flooring,” said Oztaskin, according to Türkiye Today. “Olympus continues to surprise us with its rich mosaic heritage.”Beyond Church No. 1, the team discovered a residential structure atop a Roman-era burial ground. Experts believe that the site was repurposed during the Byzantine period to help house the region’s growing populations, highlighting a change in urban planning. The residential building—complete with a stone floor and also originally constructed in the fifth century—appeared to have been reconstructed (in accordance with the original design) in the sixth century following a fire. It came complete with additional artifacts, including a large clay storage vessel known as a pithos, which are now housed in the Antalya Archaeology Museum.While crews have been on site since 2006 sifting through the city’s Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine remains, plans still call for continued exploration of the city (including what could be a temple in the city center). Already, teams have discovered examples of the masonry technique known as bossage, which features protruding blocks in finely cut stone walls, which they took to mean that the structure was likely a key religious building.Soon, the team will excavate a bishop’s palace and Church No. 3. Already known as one of the most mosaic-rich ancient regions in Turkish history, crews hope to find even more patterns and inscriptions that help tell the story of ancient Olympus.

As word spread among Catholics that immigration agents were visiting places of worship to carry out deportations, the pews inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in downtown Los Angeles became less and less crowded.Isiah, a devout Catholic, was so frightened he stopped attending weekly Mass for fear that he could be swept up in the raids. Isiah, who declined to provide his last name to The Times because of concerns about his immigration status, prayed the rosary as a substitute for two weeks before his faith brought him back to church."Church is not a place for threats," he said Thursday in Spanish.A month of sweeping immigration enforcement actions has sent people underground, leaving businesses empty and upending daily life across Southern California. It's also sparked a crisis of faith for many Catholics who have spent their lives worshiping at Sunday Mass and are now questioning whether it's safe to connect with God in such a public space.In an extraordinary move this week, Bishop Alberto Rojas of the Diocese of San Bernardino told his diocese of about 1.2 million people that they could stay home on Sundays to avoid Mass as concerns about immigration sweeps loom. It came after arrests near or at local churches."I want our immigrant communities to know that their Church stands with them and walks with them through this trying time," he said in a statement.Rojas' decree — the first of such to be given by a Catholic leader in Southern California — underscores the challenge religious institutions are grappling with as the Trump administration carries out its deportation agenda. Religious leaders want people to turn to faith to help them navigate challenging times, but they also don't want the exercising of that faith to bring harm, experts say."Bishop Rojas’ decision signals that the Church’s mission encompasses a higher calling: to embrace the downtrodden, welcome the stranger and distance itself from policies that dehumanize them. The Church sees that mission as a higher kind of patriotism — care for humanity and calling government enact the higher angels of human nature," said Richard Wood, president of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC.In May, following immigration raids in Nashville, the city's diocese became the first to say that no Catholic would be "obligated to attend Mass on Sunday if doing so puts their safety at risk.”It's a rare step for a bishop to excuse congregants indefinitely from Sunday mass, said Brett Hoover, professor of theology at Loyola Marymount University.The last time dioceses took such an action was during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were instructed to isolate to slow the spread of the virus. Such decrees were also issued during the flu epidemic in the early part of the 20th century. Decrees excusing certain individuals from Mass are generally issued on much smaller scales, giving certain congregants a pass because of issues like illness or natural disasters, Hoover said."Bishop Rojas is registering that this is traumatizing for people — seeing families being separated," Hoover said. "Catholic teaching is very clear that immigration, particularly deportations, should not split up families."For Catholics, historically, not attending Sunday Mass was seen as a potentially "very serious sin," Hoover said. While time has softened the tradition, Rojas' decree is a way to relieve people from feeling as though they are doing something sinful if they're afraid to attend Mass."Part of it is a symbolic gesture, and then part of it is to kind of relieve the more scrupulous Catholics of their worries about attending Mass," Hoover said. "It's very practical and pastoral too."Rojas' decree comes as more bishops have begun to speak out about the administration's deportation policy in which agents have deployed aggressive tactics and, at times, concealed their identities in ways that have terrified immigrant populations. People have been detained while carrying out typical daily activities in shopping center parking lots, car washes, bus stops and other public spaces.Since early June, nearly 2,800 people have been caught up in the immigration enforcement push in the L.A. area alone, including U.S. citizens and hundreds of undocumented immigrants without any criminal record.The raids have hit the Catholic community particularly hard, given that such a large portion of worshipers are immigrants or have family members who were born outside of the United States. More than a quarter of U.S. Catholic adults were born outside the country, compared with 15% of U.S. adults overall, according to data from a 2015 study by Pew Research Center.Archbishop José Gomez of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, who has long called for immigration reform, criticized the Trump administration in a column published in Angelus last month, saying it has "offered no immigration policy beyond the stated goal of deporting thousands of people each day.""This is not policy, it is punishment, and it can only result in cruel and arbitrary outcomes. Already we are hearing stories of innocent fathers and mothers being wrongly deported, with no recourse to appeal," he wrote.On Saturday, about 300 Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles joined Gomez for Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City during the sixth annual Archdiocesan pilgrimage to the Basilica, the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. Gomez addressed the burden of fear and anxiety caused by immigration enforcement during the homily.“Today we lay all our cares at the feet of Our Lady," he said. "And if we open our hearts today, if we fix our eyes on Our Lady’s, we will hear her tender words to St. Juan Diego: Am I not your mother? Are you not under my shadow and my gaze? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not sheltered underneath my mantle, under the embrace of my arms?"In Orange County, Bishop Kevin Vann has not offered a dispensation from attending Mass, but the diocese has started bringing Holy Communion to celebrate Mass in the homes of people who are afraid to go to church.Vann and his auxiliary bishops posted a letter last month condemning the raids, which they said "invoke our worst instincts" and "spread crippling fear and anxieties upon the hard-working, everyday faithful among us."Rojas' decree comes after he said individuals were recently apprehended at two Catholic parishes in the area, something that intensified fear already being experienced by his congregation — many of whom are immigrants. Some houses of worship say between a third or half of their congregants are no longer showing up in person as the raids continue.According to the National Catholic Reporter, multiple people were arrested at or near diocese churches on June 20, including a man at Our Lady of Lourdes in Montclair, which ICE officials dispute."The accusation that ICE entered a church to make an arrest [is] FALSE,” wrote Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin in an email to The Times. “The illegal alien chose to pull into the church parking lot [and] officers then safely made the arrest."Rojas wrote in the decree Tuesday that many churchgoers have shared “fears of attending mass due to potential immigration enforcement action” and that “such fear constitutes a grave inconvenience that may impede the spiritual good of the faithful.”In lieu of Sunday service, Rojas encouraged his members to “maintain their spiritual communion” by praying the rosary or reading scripture and directed diocese ministers to offer support and compassion to the affected.On Thursday, a quiet congregation gathered for Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, just blocks away from the site where protesters gathered to oppose immigration raids last month. For some attendees, the spiritual safety of the church has proved to be a physical source of strength amid the uncertainty."We hope the collective prayer will bring some kind of change," said Maria Machuca, whose parents are immigrants.Santi Camacho, who rarely attended church before the raids, said immigrant communities everywhere are finding themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place: facing possible arrest during worship, or hiding in their homes until they potentially subside.Still, many members of the church don't want to stop attending Mass even if leaders give them permission.“If all you have is family and your family is at the church, you’ll risk it,” Camacho said.Isiah, who had paused attending Mass during the raids, said church is really the only place he feels safe anymore.
