Zohran-Urdu, Hindi, Arabic-"flower; to shine"
Zohran Origin and Meaning-The name Zohran is a boy's name of Arabic origin meaning "flower; to shine".Strong and bright, Zohran is an Indian and Pakistani name, derived from the Arabic Zahran, meaning "flowers, blossoms" or "to shine", depending on whether you trace its roots to the floral zahr or to the vibrant zahara. Pronounced as zuh-RAN or zo-HRAN, it is notably borne by New York politician Zohran Mamdani.

Origin and meaning of the Mamdani last name
The surname Mamdani has its roots in the Indian subcontinent, particularly among the Muslim communities of South Asia. It is believed to derive from the Arabic word Mamdūn, which means one who is praised or one who is commendable. The name likely emerged during the medieval period, when Islamic influence began to permeate the region, particularly during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire. Over time, individuals bearing the surname may have been associated with various occupations, including scholars, merchants, and landowners, reflecting the socio-economic dynamics of their communities. The surname is often linked to a sense of respect and honor, suggesting that those who carried it were regarded as reputable members of society.Culturally, the surname Mamdani has variations in spelling and pronunciation across different regions, particularly in South Asia and among diaspora communities. In some instances, it may be spelled as Mamdani or Mamdani, reflecting local linguistic influences. The surname has spread geographically through migration patterns, particularly during the British colonial period, when many South Asians moved to different parts of the world, including Africa, Europe, and North America. In these new contexts, the name has retained its cultural significance while adapting to the local milieu, often associated with the contributions of its bearers to their respective communities.Notable figures associated with the Mamdani surname include Mahmood Mamdani, a prominent Ugandan academic and political commentator known for his work on post-colonial studies and African politics. His contributions have brought recognition to the surname, particularly within academic circles, and have highlighted the historical and cultural narratives of the communities from which he hails. The Mamdani name, therefore, carries with it a legacy of intellectual engagement and social responsibility, reflecting the broader historical context of migration, cultural exchange, and the evolving identities of its bearers.

Democrat Zohran Mamdani elected mayor of New York City | CBC News Loaded-Voter turnout was highest the city has seen in decades-The Associated Press · Posted: Nov 04, 2025 9:42 PM EST | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city's most liberal mayor in generations. In a victory for the Democratic party's progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America's biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises. With the victory, the self-described democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.Mamdani's account on the social media platform X posted a video of a subway train pulling up to City Hall station, with an announcement that said, "The next and last stop is City Hall."Mamdani's unlikely rise gives credence to Democrats who have urged the party to embrace more progressive, left-wing candidates instead of rallying behind centrists in hopes of winning back swing voters who have abandoned the party. He has already faced scrutiny from national Republicans, including President Donald Trump, who have eagerly cast him as a threat and the face of what they say is a more radical Democratic Party.Huge voter turnout-More than two million people voted in New York City's mayoral election, according to the city's Board of Elections, the strongest turnout since 1969.The campaign laid bare the Democratic Party's generational and ideological divides as it seeks to rehabilitate its damaged brand.Mamdani managed to energize progressives to score a surprise victory in the Democratic primary over Cuomo — the once-powerful former governor — with a campaign that focused on lowering the cost of living in one of the country's most expensive cities.a man and woman stand side by side near a polling station-He generated national buzz and won endorsements from big-name progressives, including U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.His campaign promises included raising taxes on the richest New Yorkers and using the money to make city buses free and provide free, universal child care. He has also promised to freeze rent for people living in about one million rent-regulated apartments.Zohran Mamdani is shaking up New York’s mayoral race with a socialist platform that includes rent control and public transportation. The front-runner’s message is drawing both support and backlash from the city’s financial elite, including the U.S. president. But not everyone embraced the 34-year-old assemblyman.Mamdani's past criticism of the city's police department and the Israeli government's military actions in Gaza — which he has called genocidal — have unnerved some centrists who see him as a potential setback in their effort to broaden the party's national appeal. Some Jewish leaders have also seized on his refusal to support Israel as a Jewish state, calling him a danger to Jews. While Mamdani has distanced himself from some of his past rhetoric on policing, some top New York Democrats remain concerned and have either been slow to endorse him or outright refused to.Trump has also threatened to take over the city if Mamdani wins, as well as arrest and deport the state assembly member, who was born in Uganda but is a U.S. citizen.Trump reluctantly endorsed Cuomo on the eve of the election, saying Mamdani would bring "disaster" to the city and encouraging Republican Curtis Sliwa backers to vote for Cuomo instead. But the former governer was unable to mount a successful political comeback four years after he resigned in the face of sexual harassment allegations, which he denies.Ambitious agenda-Mamdani, who was criticized throughout the campaign for his thin resume, will now have to begin staffing his incoming administration before taking office next year and game out how he plans to accomplish the ambitious but polarizing agenda that drove him to victory.Among the campaign's other promises are city-run grocery stores and a new Department of Community Safety that would send mental health-care workers to handle certain emergency calls rather than police officers. It is unclear how Mamdani will pay for such initiatives, given Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul's steadfast opposition to his calls to raise taxes on wealthy people.Other elections-In other elections Tuesday, Democrats won in both states that were electing governors .Former representative Abigail Spanberger will become Virginia's next governor — and the first woman elected for the job — after running a campaign focused largely on the economy, public safety and health care. She actively distanced herself from some of the Democratic Party's far-left policies. In New Jersey, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill shored up Democratic control of a state that has been reliably blue in presidential and Senate contests but had shown signs of shifting rightward in recent years.Sherrill, a former navy helicopter pilot and four-term member of Congress, defeated Jack Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by Trump. With files from CBC News and Reuters

Shia (Shi'a) Muslim Countries
Islam is a religion that was formed by the prophet Muhammad. Following his death in 632 CE, Islam broke off into two distinct groups: Sunni and Shia. These groups disagreed over who the successor to Muhammad should be. While Sunni muslims chose Abu Bakr as the successor of Mohammad, Shia designated Ali Abi Talib.Years of conflict has occurred between Sunni and Shia Muslim groups. Perhaps the most noticeable of these conflicts was the killing of the Imam Husayn, which occurred in 680 CE. October 10 is still considered a day of mourning for Shia Muslims. However, despite these differences, today both Sunni and Shia agree on Allah as the one true God and Muhammad as his messenger. They also uphold the five pillars of Islam and believe in the Koran, Islam’s holy book. Currently, there are 1.6 billion Muslims around the world with Shia Muslims accounting for almost 20%. While most global Muslims are Sunni, a handful of countries have Shia majorities or pluralities. These countries are outlined below.
Shia Countries
Iran - 90-95%-In Iran, Shia Muslims make up the majority, with 92.2% of all Muslim population in the country belonging to this sect. Initially, Iran was a Sunni majority until 1500 when Shah Ismail I conquered Iran and forced a conversion of Sunni Muslims to Shia Islam with several Sunnis murdered in the process. The conversion and murdering of Sunni Muslims continued for two centuries during which the number of Shia Muslims increased immensely. Currently, only about 5% of Muslims in Iran are Sunni. Other religious groups in the country are Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians. Atheism is not allowed in Iran, and most must declare themselves as a member of one of the four religions in the country. The constitution of Iran recognizes Shia as the official religion in the country.
Azerbaijan - 65-75%-Azerbaijan and Iran were both conquered by Shah Ismail I around the same time where he also forced a conversion of Sunnis to Shia Islam. Azerbaijan has the second highest Shia Muslim population in the world accounting for 83.6% of the total population while the sect accounts for 85% of the Muslim population in the country. Sunni accounts for only 15% of the country’s total population. Most of the Shia population in Azerbaijan follows the orthodox Ithna Ashari and orthodox Hanafi school of Shia Islam. Religious extremism is on the rise among the Shia Muslims in Azerbaijan due to the persistent poverty, corruption, and disillusionment on the support from the West. Some of the sect members have joined terrorist groups in Syria.
Iraq - 65-70%-63.7% of the Iraq’s national population is made up of Shia Muslims. The sect accounts for 63% of all Muslims in Iraq. The country is home to some of the Shia common pilgrimage sites and holy cities including Najaf, the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad’s successor and Karbala, the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali, Muhammad’s grandson. Shia continues to fight Sunni Muslims in the country as a result of US inversion of Iraq in 2003. The tension between the sects has led to 2.7 million people being displaced from their homes.
Other Countries With Shia Majority-Bahrain and Lebanon also have a notable number of Shia Muslims forming a majority of their population. 65-70% of Bahrain's population identify with Shia Islam. In Lebanon, 45-55% of the national population is Shia.

Zohran Mamdani’s last name reflects centuries of intercontinental trade, migration and cultural exchange-Published: July 14, 2025 8.37am EDT-Author-Iqbal Akhtar-Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Florida International University.

When Zohran Mamdani announced his candidacy for mayor of New York City, political observers noted his progressive platform and legislative record. But understanding the Democratic candidate’s background requires examining the rich cultural tapestry woven into his very surname: Mamdani. He takes the name from his father, Mahmood Mamdani, a prominent academic who was raised in Uganda and whose work focuses on postcolonial Uganda. I studied the history of the Khoja community for my doctoral work and have helped develop Khoja studies as an academic discipline. The Mamdani surname tells a story of migration, resilience and community-building that spans centuries and continents. The Khoja history-Mamdanis in Uganda belong to the Khoja community, a South Asian Muslim merchant caste, that shaped economic development across the western Indian Ocean for centuries. The name originates from greater Sindh, a region in South Asia that today includes southeastern Pakistan and Kachchh in western India. Its etymology is twofold. Mām is an honorific title in Kachchhi and Gujarati languages, meaning kindness, courage and pride. Māmadō is a local version of the name Muhammad that often appeared in surnames in Hindu castes that converted to Islam, such as the Memons. The Khoja were categorized by the British in the early 19th century as “Hindoo Mussalman” because their traditions spanned both religions.Written by academics, edited by journalists, backed by evidence.Over time, the Khoja came to be identified only as Muslim and then primarily as Shiite Muslim. Today, the majority of Khoja are Ismaili: a branch of Shiite Islam that follows the Aga Khan as their living imam. The Mamdani family, however, is part of the Twelver community of Khoja, whose Twelfth Imam is believed to be hidden from the world and only emerges in times of crisis. Twelvers believe he will help usher in an age of peace during end times.Around the late 18th century, the Khoja helped export textiles, manufactured goods, spices and gems from the Indian subcontinent to Arabia and East Africa. Through this Western Indian Ocean trading network, they imported timber, ivory, minerals and cloves, among other goods.Khoja family firms were built on kinship networks and trust. They built networks of shops, communal housing and warehouses, and extended credit for thousands of miles, from Zanzibar in Tanzania to Bombay – now Mumbai – on the western coast of India.Cousins and brothers would send money and goods across the ocean with only a letter. The precarious nature of trade in this period meant that families also served as insurance for each other. In times of wealth, it was shared; in times of disaster, help was available.Khoja contributions in Africa-The Khoja became instrumental in building the commercial infrastructure of eastern, central and southern Africa. But the Khoja contribution to the development of Africa extended far beyond trade. In the absence of colonial investment in public infrastructure, they helped build institutions that formed the foundation of the modern nation-states that emerged after colonization. The institutions both facilitated trade and established permanent communities. For example, the first dispensary and public school in Zanzibar were constructed by a Khoja magnate, Tharia Topan, who made his wealth through the ivory and clove trades. Topan eventually became so prominent that he was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1890 for his service to the British Empire in helping to end slavery in East Africa. The Khoja community continues to invest in East Africa. The most famous example is the Aga Khan Development Network, whose hospitals and schools operate in 30 countries. In places such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, they are considered the best.Khoja in Uganda-Like in other parts of Africa, the Khoja settled in Uganda as a liaison business community to develop a market to serve both African and European needs. The linguistic and cultural knowledge, developed over centuries, helped facilitate business despite the challenges of colonization.A Black man in a suit walking with a woman and another dressed in traditional African attire. However, in 1972, Ugandan dictator Idi Amin expelled all Asians – approximately 80,000 – forcing families like the Mamdanis into exile. These included indentured laborers, who were brought in to help build the railroad and farm during the British colonial period, and free traders, like the Mamdani family.Amin saw them all as the same and famously said: “Asians came to Uganda to build the railway. The railway is finished. They must leave now.”The experience was a bitter one. Families lost everything, and many left with only the clothes on their backs.Mahmood Mamdani, who came from a Khoja merchant family, was 26 when he was exiled. Yet, unlike most Ugandan Asians, he chose to go back. At Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, Mamdani set up the Institute for Social Research, which helped to provide rigorous social science training to Ugandan researchers trying to improve their society. While the earlier generations of the Khoja tended to choose business or adjacent professions, such as accounting, the subsequent generations – particularly those educated in the West – embraced the knowledge economy as professionals, academics and nonprofit leaders.Several of Mahmood Mamdani’s generation of Khoja academics conducted path-breaking work on Afro-Asian solidarity – a way of thinking about the world beyond colonial categories, such as the category of religion as a separate domain from the secular. These scholars, such as Tanzania’s Issa Shivji and Abdul Sheriff, worked on creating solidarity among the newly independent states of the Global South.Mahmood Mamdani is known for his influential post-9/11 academic work, “Good Muslim, Bad Muslim,” which examined how Muslim identities are stereotyped. He argued that these identities are complex and varied, shaped by accumulated history and present experiences.Interfaith identity-The Khoja community – known globally as the Khoja Shia Ithnasheri Muslim Community – has developed strong transnational connections. Today, they are concentrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, United States and France. However, Khoja can be found in almost any country in the world. In 2013, I met members of the community in Hong Kong. The Khoja community plays an important role in interfaith dialogue and global development initiatives. A prominent Ismaili Khoja, Eboo Patel, the founder of Interfaith America, has dedicated his life to pluralism and mutual understanding through building up civil society.Zohran Mamdani’s mother, acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, is Hindu by birth. This interfaith marriage exemplifies the flexibility, diversity and tolerance of Khoja Islam, which has historically navigated between Hindu and Islamic traditions.Whether Mamdani’s policies prove practical remains to be seen, but his background offers something valuable: a deep understanding of how communities build resilience across generations and geographies.
