WHEN ARE THE 500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL IN THE SPRING TIME.(GET READY ISLAM TO BE BIRD SEED FOR THESE BIRDS)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m0bXU5Xqc5M
The
500 million migratory birds in Israel during the spring arrive from
Africa and head toward Europe and Asia, with the peak migration
occurring in March and April. While migration starts in late February,
the most intense movements, particularly of birds of prey, storks, and
pelicans, occur during the third week of March and continue into April.
Key Details on the Spring Migration
Peak Period: Mid-March through April.
Main
Migration Route: The birds use the Great Rift Valley, which includes
the Hula Valley and Eilat, acting as a "bottleneck" where millions of
birds fly through the narrow land bridge.
Best Spots: The Hula Lake
Park (Northern Israel) and the Eilat Birding Center (Southern Israel)
are primary locations for observing the migration.
Key Species:
Hundreds of thousands of white storks, along with black kites, raptors,
and pelicans, pass through over these months.
uration: The spring migration runs from late February and continues into June, though the heaviest traffic is in March/April.
The
500 million migratory birds fly over Israel in the fall between late
August and mid-December. The peak migration period for the autumn, when
the highest volume of bird traffic occurs, is typically October and
November.
Key Fall Migration Details
Location: The Hula Valley (Agamon Hula Park) in northern Israel is the premier spot to witness this phenomenon.
Timing: Migration starts as early as late June with some waders, but intensifies from mid-August through November.
Peak Festival: The "Annual Hula Valley Bird Festival" is usually held in November to align with the peak migration traffic.
Key
Species: Many birds of prey (raptors), including honey buzzards and
steppe eagles, cross during this time, along with massive flocks of
storks and cranes.
While roughly 500 million birds pass through in
the autumn on their way to Africa, the same number crosses again in the
spring (mid-February to May) on their way back to Europe and Asia.

Trump warns 'clock is ticking,' said to feel deal
possible-Netanyahu speaks with Trump amid reports Israel, US preparing
Iran strikes-PM to convene limited security cabinet; drone strikes UAE
nuclear station; Iran media says US offered no concrete concessions,
demands shutdown of all but one nuclear facility By Lazar Berman,Nava
Freiberg and Stav Levaton-17 May 2026, 5:44 pmUpdated at 10:49 pm
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US President Donald Trump Sunday
evening about the war with Iran, Netanyahu’s office confirmed to The
Times of Israel. The leaders discussed the possibility of renewing the
war with Iran as well as Trump’s recent trip to China, according to
Hebrew media reports.Netanyahu was then set to convene top aides and
ministers for a security discussion in his office in Jerusalem. Such
discussions in the Prime Minister’s Office, often termed the “small
security cabinet,” usually include Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar,
Defense Minister Israel Katz, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich,
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, and Shas chairman Aryeh
Deri.Last week, it was reported that Israel and the United States were
carrying out intense preparations to renew attacks on Iran, possibly as
soon as this week. Sunday’s discussions come after a drone struck a
nuclear power plant in the UAE, which, along with Israel, sustained the
most blows from Iran during the war.Trump is expected to hold his own
Situation Room meeting on Tuesday with his top national security
advisers to discuss the options for military action regarding Iran,
Axios reported, citing two US officials. While negotiations have stalled
between the US and the Islamic Republic since a ceasefire came into
effect on April 8, Trump is said to believe that Iran still wants to
make a deal. But he threatened consequences for Iran if its leaders do
not act quickly.“For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get
moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE
ESSENCE!” he wrote in a social media post.In his weekly cabinet meeting
prior to his conversation with Trump, Netanyahu said, “Our eyes are open
regarding Iran.” Referring to the US president, he added, “I will
certainly hear impressions from his trip to China, perhaps other things
as well. Certainly, there are many possibilities, and we are prepared
for every scenario.”Last week Trump visited China for a summit with
Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said Xi had offered to help open the
Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for the global oil supply that Iran has
blocked, and that the Chinese leader had pledged not to send military
equipment to aid Iran in the war.On Sunday, after Trump returned from
China, he shared an AI-generated graphic of him and a US Navy admiral in
front of stormy waters with several ships, including one flying the
Iranian flag. A caption read, “It was the calm before the storm.”New

(@TrumpTruthOnX) May 16, 2026-Trump said to still believe Iran wants to
make a deal-Trump still believes Iran wants to make a deal and expects
Tehran to submit an updated proposal in the coming days, according to
remarks he made in a phone call with Channel 12 and Axios.According to
the news outlet---, he declined to specify a deadline for negotiations,
but threatened harsher military action if Iran fails to meet US demands
over its nuclear program.“We want to make a deal. They are not where we
want them to be. They will have to get there or they will be hit badly,
and they don’t want that,” Trump said.He also said his phone call with
Netanyahu was positive and focused largely on the war with Iran,
according to Channel 12.Iranian armed forces spokesman Abolfazl
Shekarchi, meanwhile, warned Trump on Sunday against restarting attacks
on his country.“The desperate American president should know that if his
threats are carried out and Islamic Iran is attacked again, his
country’s resources and military will be confronted with unprecedented,
offensive, surprising, and tumultuous scenarios,” he said, according to
state television.Similarly, Iran’s deputy speaker of parliament,
Hamidreza Hajibabaei, warned against attacking Iranian oil
infrastructure.“If Iranian oil is harmed, Iran will take measures that
will prevent the United States and the world from accessing oil from the
region for an extended period,” he said, according to the news agency
ISNA.Iranian media: US offered no concrete concessions in talks-On
Friday, Trump said that he would accept a 20-year suspension of the
uranium enrichment at the heart of Iran’s nuclear program if Tehran gave
a “real” guarantee. But Iranian media claimed on Sunday that the US had
failed to make any concrete concessions in its latest response to
Iran’s demands in negotiations to end the war.In its proposal, Iran had
called for an end to the war on all fronts, including Israel’s conflict
in Lebanon against the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group. That conflict
has technically been in a ceasefire for a month, though fighting has
carried on unabated.Iran also demanded a halt to the US naval blockade
on Iranian ports, which has been in place since April 13. It also called
for lifting all US sanctions and the release of Iranian assets frozen
abroad under longstanding US sanctions, according to the Iranian foreign
ministry in a press conference last week. The Fars news agency said the
Iranian proposal had emphasized that Tehran would continue to manage the
Strait of Hormuz.Fars said Washington had presented a five-point list
of demands, which included a requirement for Iran to keep only one
nuclear site in operation and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched
uranium to the US.The US also refused to release “even 25 percent” of
Iran’s frozen assets abroad or pay any reparations for the damage
inflicted on Iran during the war, according to Fars, which said the US
also conditioned the cessation of hostilities on all fronts on the
outcome of negotiations. The Mehr news agency, meanwhile, said that “the
US, offering no tangible concessions wants to obtain concessions that it
failed to obtain during the war, which will lead to an impasse in the
negotiations.”UAE nuclear station hit by droneAmid the impasse, a drone
strike triggered a fire near a nuclear power station in the emirate of
Abu Dhabi on Sunday, authorities said, reporting no injuries or impact
on radiation levels.“Authorities in Abu Dhabi responded to a fire
incident that broke out in an electrical generator outside the inner
perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra Region,
caused by a drone strike,” the Abu Dhabi Media Office said. The plant
began operations in 2020 and is 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of the
UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, near the country’s borders with Saudi Arabia
and Qatar. It provides up to a quarter of the oil-rich country’s
electricity needs, the state-owned operator Emirates Nuclear Energy
Company said in 2024.“No injuries were reported, and there was no impact
on radiological safety levels,” the media office said. “All
precautionary measures have been taken, and further updates will be
provided as they become available.“The Federal Authority for Nuclear
Regulation (FANR) confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of
the power plant or the readiness of its essential systems, and that all
units are operating as normal.”Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN’s
nuclear agency, condemned the attack. The International Atomic Energy
Agency said on X that Grossi “expresses grave concern about the incident
and says military activity that threatens nuclear safety is
unacceptable.”The statement did not say from where the drone was
launched, but the United Arab Emirates has recently accused Iran of
being behind attacks on its energy and economic infrastructure.Netanyahu
said he visited the UAE during the war, though the UAE denied that he
traveled there. Other senior Israeli security officials reportedly did
so as well. Last week, it was also reported that the UAE and Saudi
Arabia carried out military strikes on Iran, making them the only
countries to join the United States and Israel in their war against the
Islamic Republic.Times of Israel staff and AFP contributed to this
report.
Israel built two covert military bases in Iraq to support
Iran strikes – report-NYT says Israel built first base in country in
late 2024; this year, Israel built another installation there; Iraqi
soldier and civilian killed to protect the secret By Lazar Berman and
ToI Staff 17 May 2026, 7:29 pm
Israel built two covert bases in
Iraq to aid in its wars with Iran, and an Iraqi soldier and a civilian
were killed in order to protect the secret military installations, The
New York Times reported Sunday.Earlier this month, The Wall Street
Journal reported that Israel had built one base in Iraq’s western desert
for use in the US-Israeli war with Iran that began in late February.
Shortly afterward, what appeared to be a makeshift airstrip in a dry
lakebed, some 180 kilometers (112 miles) southwest of the city of
Karbala, was located by open-source intelligence analysts in satellite
imagery taken just days before the war.But Iraqi officials told the
Times that Israel had maintained another base there as well, which was
used during the June 2025 war with Iran as well as this year’s
conflict.Israel began building that base in late 2024, according to a
regional official. The Times report said the US knew of that base, and
that it is no longer operational.According to the reports, Israel built
the bases to cut down on flight time for strikes in Iran, provide
medical treatment, and aid in logistics and other forms of support for
the Israeli Air Force. They also housed special forces troops and
search-and-rescue teams who were poised to act if any Israeli pilots
were downed. The IDF has not commented on either report. Iraq and Israel
do not have diplomatic relations.Local Bedouins in Iraq’s sparsely
populated western desert had contacted local military officials with
reports of suspicious activity for weeks, according to the Times. But
the Iraqi army chose to try to observe from a distance and ask the US
for information.Washington was not forthcoming, even though it is an
Iraqi ally. The US also persuaded Iraq to turn off its radars in order
to protect US aircraft, the Times said. Then, on March 3, Awad
al-Shammari, a Bedouin shepherd driving to the nearest town to pick up
groceries, was killed by an Israeli helicopter after he stumbled on the
base, a cousin told the newspaper. Al-Shammari had reportedly managed to
report the base to Iraqi authorities. His family later found his body
by speaking to people who had witnessed him being killed. The Iraqis sent
a reconnaissance mission, but retreated after one soldier was killed
and two were wounded by what was likely Israeli fire.Senior officials
told the Times that Baghdad downplayed the incident, though it
complained to the UN Security Council and military leaders briefed the
country’s parliament on the incidents.“It shows a blatant disregard for
Iraqi sovereignty, its government and its forces, as well as for the
dignity of the Iraqi people,” Waad al-Kadu, an Iraqi lawmaker, told the
Times.
USS Ford returns home after record deployment supporting
Iran war, Maduro’s capture-Largest aircraft carrier in world spent 326
days at sea, most for a ship of its kind in last 50 years; saw war in
Gulf, action in Venezuela, and suffered major laundry fire By AP 17 May
2026, 11:31 am
NORFOLK, Virginia — The USS Gerald R. Ford, the
world’s largest aircraft carrier, returned home to Virginia on Saturday
after an 11-month deployment, the longest for any such ship since the
Vietnam War, that saw it support the US war with Iran and the capture of
Nicolás Maduro when he was Venezuela’s president. The most advanced US
warship and two accompanying destroyers docked at Naval Station Norfolk
with about 5,000 sailors waiting to see their families for the first
time since June. Besides combat operations and traversing continents,
the sailors aboard the carrier faced a noncombat-related fire that left
hundreds without places to sleep and forced lengthy repairs on the Greek
island of Crete.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was on hand for the
arrival of the warships, which included the destroyer USS
Bainbridge.Hegseth commended the crew of the Bainbridge for a “job well
done.”“You didn’t just accomplish a mission, you made history,” Hegseth
said on the destroyer’s deck. “You made a nation proud.”Hegseth also
spoke to the crews of the USS Mahan, a destroyer, and the Ford.In
recognition of their service during the Iran war, the Ford and the
accompanying ships were awarded the prestigious Presidential Unit
Citation, lauded for “outstanding performance in action” against “a
determined enemy.” It’s the highest award a unit can receive and one
typically reserved for significant achievement in combat. The Ford’s 326
days at sea are the most for an aircraft carrier in the past 50 years
and broke the record for the longest post-Vietnam War deployment,
according to US Naval Institute News, a news outlet run by the US Naval
Institute, a nonprofit organization. The only longer deployments were
the 1973 deployment of USS Midway at 332 days and the 1965 deployment of
USS Coral Sea at 329 days. The Ford’s long time at sea has raised
questions about the impact on service members who are away from home for
long periods as well as about increasing strain on the ship and its
equipment beyond the fire, which started in one of the carrier’s laundry
spaces. When the Ford first left Virginia’s coast in June, it headed to
the Mediterranean Sea. It was then rerouted to the Caribbean Sea in
October as part of the largest naval buildup in the region in
generations. The carrier took part in the military operation in January
to capture Maduro. Then it would see more battle, heading toward the
Middle East as tensions with Iran escalated. The Ford participated in
the opening days of the Iran war from the Mediterranean Sea before going
through the Suez Canal and heading into the Red Sea in early
March.Technically, the crew of the USS Nimitz was on duty and away from
home for a total of 341 days in 2020 and 2021. However, that included
extended isolation periods ashore in the US meant to help prevent the
spread of COVID-19.
Trump issues dire warning to Iran to accept peace deal.
Washington,
United States, May 17 (AFP) May 17, 2026-President Donald Trump issued a
fresh warning to Iran on Sunday, saying it had to move quickly towards a
peace deal or "there won't be anything left of them."Washington, locked
in conflict with Tehran since US and Israeli forces launched major
strikes on the Islamic republic beginning February 28, has struggled to
break an impasse and make any progress toward ending a war that has
shaken the Middle East and sent energy prices climbing."For Iran, the
Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won't be
anything left of them," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "TIME
IS OF THE ESSENCE!"The war has led to an effective blockade of the
critical Strait of Hormuz, through which some 20 percent of global oil
exports pass in peacetime, and has drawn neighbors Israel and Lebanon
into a deadly side conflict.Iran's clerical state, Hezbollah's patron,
has demanded a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon before any broader peace
agreement with Trump, who has been frustrated by Tehran's refusal to
accept a deal on his terms. An Israeli military official said Sunday that
Hezbollah had fired around 200 projectiles at Israel and its troops
over the weekend, despite Israel and Lebanon agreeing to extend a
ceasefire.Lebanon's health ministry said new Israeli strikes Sunday on
the country's south killed five people, including two children.Israeli
attacks since the start of the war have killed more than 2,900 people in
Lebanon, including 400 since the truce began on April 17, according to
Lebanese authorities.- 'No tangible concessions' -Washington and Tehran
agreed to a truce on April 8, but peace negotiations have stalled and
sporadic attacks have continued. On Sunday, Iranian media said the United
States had failed to make any concrete concessions in its latest
response to Iran's proposed agenda for negotiations to end the war.The
Fars news agency said Washington had presented a five-point list which
included a demand for Iran to keep only one nuclear site in operation
and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United
States.Washington also refused to release "even 25 percent" of Iran's
frozen assets abroad or pay any reparations for the damage inflicted on
Iran during the war, according to Fars. The Mehr news agency, meanwhile,
said: "The United States, offering no tangible concessions, wants to
obtain concessions that it failed to obtain during the war, which will
lead to an impasse in the negotiations."Sunday saw more unrest in parts
of the region. A drone strike triggered a fire near a nuclear power
station in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, authorities said, reporting no
injuries or impact on radiation levels.Iranian-backed armed groups
equipped with drones are based in Iraq, while Tehran's allies in Yemen
-- the Houthi rebels -- also possess combat-grade UAVs.Pakistan has been
actively mediating in the peace talks between Iran and the United
States, and its Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Sunday in Tehran with
Iran's chief negotiator and speaker of parliament, Mohammad Bagher
Ghalibaf. In a social media post following the talks, Ghalibaf said the
US and Israeli war with Iran had destabilized the entire Middle
East."Some governments in the region believed that the presence of the
United States would bring them security, but recent events showed that
this presence is not only incapable of providing security, but also
creates the grounds for insecurity," he said.Trump and his Chinese
counterpart Xi Jinping discussed Iran during their high-stakes summit
earlier this week, but there appeared to be little headway on Iran.Trump
said Xi assured him that China was not preparing military aid to Iran,
while the Chinese foreign ministry said Friday in a statement on Iran
that "shipping lanes should be reopened as soon as possible."

'We
are tightening our grip on Hamas'‘Now 60%’: Netanyahu admits Israel
taking more territory in Gaza, despite ceasefire-PM confirms to cabinet
the IDF is pushing past the Yellow Line demarcating the 53% of Gaza that
Israel retained under US-brokered truce; IDF strikes in Strip allegedly
kill 8 By Lazar Berman and Emanuel Fabian-17 May 2026, 5:25 pmUpdated

Israel has been expanding the territory it controls
in the Gaza Strip during the ceasefire, Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu acknowledged Sunday, pushing past the lines that were agreed
upon in the US-brokered ceasefire that took effect last October. At the
start of the truce, the Israel Defense Forces controlled around 53
percent of the war-torn Palestinian enclave, with Hamas controlling the
other 47%, in which nearly all of the Strip’s two million residents
live. The army established the “Yellow Line,” demarcating the part of
Gaza occupied by Israeli troops, and has been regularly firing at those
who approach the line and are deemed a threat.“In Gaza now, we already
control not 50%, but 60%,” Netanyahu said at the weekly cabinet meeting
in Jerusalem, confirming reports that Israel has taken more territory
despite the ceasefire still being in effect.Maps issued quietly by
Israel in March showed a new restricted area beyond the 53%. The area,
marked on the maps with an orange line, makes up an estimated 11% of
Gaza’s territory beyond the Yellow Line. The areas cordon off nearly
two-thirds of Gaza’s territory in total. The military sent the maps to
aid groups in Gaza in mid-March, saying the area between the orange line
and the yellow line is a restricted zone to enable aid delivery, and
that aid groups must coordinate their movements with the military. It
says civilians are not affected. The expanded zone has stirred fears from
displaced Palestinians living there that they could be deemed targets
by Israel. It has also stoked concerns that Israel may plan to hold the
area permanently.“We are tightening our grip on Hamas,” Netanyahu said
Sunday.“We know exactly what our mission is, and our mission is one
thing only — to ensure that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to
Israel,” he said. However, he did not pledge that Hamas will be destroyed
as a military and governing organization, as he has many times since
October 7, 2023.Addressing the killing of the terror group’s military
chief Izz al-Din al-Haddad on Friday, Netanyahu said that he promised
“that all the architects of the massacre and all the architects of the
kidnappings would be eliminated, every last one of them, and we are
getting very close to completing that mission as well.”Haddad helped
plan the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that killed 1,200 people,
mostly civilians, and saw 251 abducted as hostages to Gaza, triggering
the war. He took over as head of Hamas in Gaza after the May 2025
killing of Mohammed Sinwar, the brother and successor of Yahya Sinwar,
who led the terror group in the 2023 onslaught.Gaza strikes allegedly
kill 8; IDF says Hamas commander killed-Meanwhile, Israeli strikes
allegedly killed at least eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on
Sunday, Hamas-linked health officials claimed.Medics said an Israeli
strike killed one Palestinian near a Hamas police post in Khan Younis in
the southern Gaza Strip. The military said it killed an operative who
posed an immediate threat to forces operating in an area south of the
enclave.Separately, Gaza medics said another Israeli airstrike killed at
least three people at a community kitchen near Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir
Al-Balah in the central Gaza area. The IDF said the strike targeted a
Hamas commander developing anti-tank missiles.Gaza medical officials
claimed three more Palestinians were killed, one in a shooting incident
in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and two others in an Israeli
airstrike near a bakery in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.Additionally,
the IDF announced Sunday that a Hamas commander was killed in an
airstrike in the Gaza Strip the day before. The IDF said that Bahaa
Baroud, who served in Hamas’s operations division, had advanced many
attacks against troops and Israeli civilians “in the immediate
timeframe.”“Baroud posed an immediate threat to IDF troops and was
struck and eliminated in a precise aerial strike,” the military
said. Some 870 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the
ceasefire began in October, according to Hamas health ministry figures
that do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. Four Israeli
soldiers have been killed in Gaza during the same period.Reuters and
Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Death penalty
law for West Bank Palestinians convicted of deadly terrorism comes into
effect-‘Terrorists who murder Jews will not sit in prison in pleasant
conditions… they will pay the heaviest price’ says Defense Minister Katz
By Jeremy Sharon-Today, 11:22 pm-MAY 17,26
The death penalty law
for West Bank Palestinians convicted of deadly acts of terrorism came
into effect Sunday night, after the commander of the IDF Central
Command, Maj. Gen Avi Bluth, signed the military order necessary to
enact the measure in the territory. The order requires that a military
court presiding over the prosecution of terrorists whose attacks
resulted in the death of a victim apply the death penalty alone as the
only available sentence, unless the court finds special circumstances
allowing for life imprisonment.Following the passage of the legislation
at the end of March, Defense Minister Israel Katz requested that Bluth
approve the military order, which he did on Sunday. The legislation has
been widely condemned as discriminatory since it states explicitly that
it does not apply to Israeli citizens or residents of Israel. It also
only applies to terror trials in the military courts system, which is
used for Palestinians, while Israelis are tried in Israel’s civilian
court system. In addition, one of the three conditions for imposing the
death penalty is that the motive of the attacker was to either “negate
the existence of the State of Israel or the authority of the military
commander in the area” — motives that would likely only be applicable to
Palestinian terrorists.Several organizations and politicians have
petitioned the High Court of Justice against the law, and the court
ordered the state to respond by May 24.“This is a clear and sharp change
of policy after the October 7 [2023] massacre: A terrorist who murders
Jews can no longer rely on [prisoner exchange] deals, [good prison]
conditions, or the hope to be released in the future,” Katz and National
Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said in a joint statement.“Whoever
chooses murderous terrorism against Jews needs to know that the State of
Israel will bring him to justice all the way.”Added Katz, “Terrorists
who murder Jews will not sit in prison in pleasant conditions, will not
wait for [prisoner exchange deals] and will not dream of release — they
will pay the heaviest price.”Ben Gvir lauded the signing of the military
order as the fulfilment of a campaign promise of his far-right Otzma
Yehudit party, saying, “We promised and we fulfilled,” and that “we do
not capitulate or contain murderous terrorism, we defeat it.”Although
the law has been roundly condemned for targeting Palestinian terrorists
specifically and excluding Israelis from its provisions, it is unclear
if the legislation will lead to the automatic death penalty sentences
that its authors seek. The condition requiring that the terror attack be
carried out with the motive of “negating the existence of the State of
Israel or the authority of the military commander in the area” may be
hard to prove in court in many cases, leaving judges with room to impose
a prison sentence instead.
Late-night blast, fireball near Beit
Shemesh rattles jittery residents-Rocket propellent firm Tomer says
large explosion was ‘pre-planned experiment,’ test coordinated with
authorities; following panic, company says will give public warning in
future By ToI Staff Today, 8:27 am-MAY 17,26
A large blast
accompanied by a fireball lit up the night sky in the city of Beit
Shemesh late Saturday, rattling residents. The state-owned Tomer defense
firm later said that the blast was a pre-planned test and that
authorities had been informed. However, residents said they had no
warning. The city, near Jerusalem, was hit several times by missiles
fired by Iran during the recent war, and residents were on edge amid
speculation that fighting could resume. In a statement, Tomer — which
develops engines for rockets and missiles, including the Arrow air
defense system — said that the blast was “a pre-planned experiment that
was carried out according to plan.”An unnamed source in the company
confirmed to the Kan public broadcaster that it was a controlled,
planned explosion.Channel 12 reported, without citing sources, that the
test involved propellants for rockets, including those with a range of
thousands of kilometers. On Sunday, Kan reported that in the wake of the
panic caused by the blast, a meeting was held at Tomer during which it
was decided, in coordination with the Defense Ministry, to warn the
public ahead of similar tests.Tomer sources told the broadcaster that
due to operational needs, the company is conducting testing at all
hours, including during the night.According to Kan, the company recently
hired dozens of new employees, and the test was scheduled at night due
to production constraints. Sources said it was carried out five
kilometres from any population areas and that weather conditions had
made the blast appear more “apocalyptic” than it actually was-As news of
the blast spread, some speculated on social media that the factory had
either been attacked or there was a major accident, and that authorities
were hushing up the incident.Company sources told Kan that police, the
IDF, and the Fire and Rescue services were all notified in advance, and
that was why no emergency vehicles arrived at the plant after the
explosion. The Defense Ministry said in a statement that “the issue of
advance warning to the public will be examined with the company.”Last
month, the ministry said that it was ramping up production of Arrow
interceptor missiles, which played a key role in thwarting Iranian
ballistic missile attacks on the country during the recent fighting.
Foreign reports throughout the war indicated that Israel was rationing
its interceptors.Israel and the US are reportedly preparing to renew
attacks on Iran if negotiations to end a war that started at the end of
February fail to produce a deal.Israel and the US launched their
campaign against Iran on February 28 in a bid to destabilize the regime
and destroy its nuclear and ballistic missile capacities. Iran responded
with missile and drone strikes across the region, including at Israel,
and its proxies in Iraq and Lebanon also carried out attacks, with
Israel launching massive airstrikes in Lebanon in response to the
Hezbollah terror group’s rocket barrages. On March 1, nine people were
killed and more than 40 were injured in Beit Shemesh by a direct Iranian
ballistic missile impact.A temporary ceasefire was reached between the
US and Iran in early April, but with Iran still blockading the Strait of
Hormuz, choking global oil supplies, and the US blockading Iranian
ports, the situation is volatile.According to Kan, in 2021, there was a
similar massive blast at the factory, which the company likewise said
was a planned test that caused no injuries.
Marwan Barghouti,
serving 5 life terms, tops results-Early results in Fatah leadership
vote show Abbas’s son, intelligence chief elected-Millionaire Yasser
Abbas expected to get seat on party’s powerful Central Committee, as
will Zakaria Zubeidi, ex-head of Fatah terror group who was behind
dozens of attacks By Nurit Yohanan and Agencies 17 May 2026, 4:39 pm
Preliminary
results from the elections for Fatah’s Central Committee, the small
leadership body of around 20 members that runs the movement currently
controlling the Palestinian Authority, showed that PA President Mahmoud
Abbas was elected to the panel, Palestinian media outlets reported
Sunday.Fatah, like the PA, is headed by the elder Abbas, whose son
Yasser Abbas is seen as his possible successor. The younger Abbas, 64, a
millionaire businessman who spends most of his time in Canada, secured a
place on the central committee after being appointed around five years
ago as his father’s “special representative” — a role that marked his
emergence on the political scene.Marwan Barghouti, seen by many
Palestinians as a potential successor to Abbas, topped the preliminary
results, retaining his seat on the committee with the highest number of
votes, according to figures seen by AFP. Barghouti has since 2002 been
serving five cumulative life terms plus 40 years in prison for helping
plan terror attacks during the Second Intifada that killed five
civilians.Jibril Rajoub was reelected as the secretary-general of the
committee, keeping the seat he has held since 2017, while Palestinian
Authority Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh was also reelected.Majed
Faraj, head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service, one of the
PA’s security bodies, who is also considered close to Abbas, was also
reelected, as was Mahmoud al-Aloul, Abbas’s deputy in Fatah.According to
the reports, Leila Ghannam, the governor of the Ramallah district, who
is also considered close to Abbas, was elected as a new member of the
Central Committee.Among the newcomers was Zakaria Zubeidi, 50, a former
commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group — Fatah’s armed
wing — in the Jenin refugee camp, who was freed from Israeli prison last
year under a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas amid the war triggered
by the Palestinian terror group’s October 7, 2023, invasion of southern
Israel.Zubeidi organized dozens of terror attacks during the Second
Intifada, and was one of six prisoners who briefly escaped from Gilboa
prison in 2021, before being recaptured. The results were not
official. With several existing members retaining their seats, the
congress’s outcome was already drawing criticism.“There is a failure to
present a political, economic, and cultural vision for the problems we
are suffering” in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, said Ali Jarbawi, a
political science professor at Birzeit University.“It looks as if it was
all about merely replacing some individuals with others.”The three-day
congress, held simultaneously across Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo, and Beirut,
drew 2,507 voters — a turnout of 94.64 percent, organizers
said.Fifty-nine candidates competed for 18 seats on the central
committee, while 450 vied for 80 seats on the revolutionary council, the
party’s parliament. The elections were being held as part of Fatah’s
conference, the eighth since the movement was founded around 60 years
ago. Ahead of the gathering, Arab media outlets reported that Abbas had
unusually convened the conference in order to bring in new candidates
aligned with him into Fatah’s small leadership forum.According to the
Palestinian reports, voting for the broader Fatah Revolutionary Council,
which has around 80 members, is still ongoing. The PA was set up as an
interim administration under the 1990s Oslo Accords between Israel and
the Palestine Liberation Organization, an umbrella group still
internationally recognized as the representative of the Palestinian
people. The powerful Fatah party dominates both the PA and the PLO.Abbas
retains control-The congress opened Thursday, with Abbas being
reelected as head of the movement. In his opening address, he vowed to
pursue reforms and hold long-delayed presidential and parliamentary
elections.Abbas and the Palestinian Authority are under mounting
international pressure to implement reforms and hold elections, amid
widespread accusations of corruption and political stagnation, which
have eroded their legitimacy among Palestinians.US President Donald
Trump has demanded sweeping reforms of the PA as a condition for it to
play any meaningful role in post-war Gaza.In recent decades, Fatah’s
popularity and influence have dwindled amid internal divisions and
growing public frustration over the stagnation of the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process. The sense of disappointment led to a
surge in support for rival Hamas, which won the last legislative
elections held in 2006, before going on to expel Fatah from the Gaza
Strip in a bloody coup.Fatah’s central committee is expected to play a
decisive role in the post-Abbas era, and key figures are already
jostling to succeed the 90-year-old veteran leader, with Rajoub and
Sheikh among the frontrunners.Yasser Abbas’s foray into politics has
fueled speculation that the president may be seeking to position him to
succeed him as head of Fatah and the PA.That has drawn criticism from
some Fatah officials, who say Yasser would be unable to unify
Palestinians or help them chart a new political future after years
without national elections or tangible steps toward statehood. In the
more than two decades since Mahmoud Abbas was elected to succeed Fatah
founder Yasser Arafat, Palestinians have come to view the PA as
ineffective and corrupt, something denied by Abbas, who has ruled by
decree since his mandate expired in 2009.Yasser Abbas, who has never
held an official role within Fatah or the PA, runs tobacco and
contracting firms in the parts of the West Bank where the PA exercises
limited self-rule. Critics have long alleged that he and his brother
Tarek have used public funds to help their businesses, allegations both
men reject.Jarbawi, the political science professor, said that Abbas’s
election to the committee alone does not put him on a clear path to the
presidency.“It is not enough to guarantee him advancement to the
presidency,” he said. “This may be seen as the beginning of a phase — if
not of hereditary succession, then of securing a position in the
future.”Jarbawi said the elder Abbas remained firmly in command, with
the congress failing to clarify who would lead the movement after
him.“He is still in control of the reins of power, and his reelection
reflects his dominance over Fatah,” he said, while acknowledging that
several committee members harbor their own leadership ambitions.
Israeli strike in east Lebanon kills Islamic Jihad commander: state media.

of the city of Baalbek, the National News Agency reported.
Drone strike starts fire outside UAE nuclear plant.
Abu
Dhabi, May 17 (AFP) May 17, 2026-A drone strike triggered a fire near a
nuclear power station in the emirate of Abu Dhabi on Sunday,
authorities said, reporting no injuries or impact on radiation
levels. The UAE's defence ministry said the drone that targeted the
facility was one of three that "entered the country from the western
border direction".The projectile struck "an electrical generator outside
the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra
area"."Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the
attacks, and updates will be disclosed upon completion of the
investigations," the ministry added.UAE presidential adviser Anwar
Gargash appeared to refer to Iran and its regional proxy groups in his
condemnation of the attack."The terrorist targeting of the Barakah clean
nuclear power plant, whether carried out by the principal perpetrator
or through one of its agents, represents a dangerous escalation," he
wrote on X.He called the incident "a dark scene that violates all
international laws and norms", accusing the perpetrators of a disregard
for the lives of civilians in the UAE.Iranian-backed armed groups
equipped with drones are based in Iraq, while Tehran's allies in Yemen
-- the Houthi rebels -- also possess combat-grade UAVs.The UAE
"condemned in the strongest terms the unprovoked terrorist attack" and
"will not tolerate any threat to its security and sovereignty under any
circumstances", a foreign ministry statement said."These attacks
constitute a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable act of aggression and
a direct threat to the country's security," it added.UAE foreign
minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held calls with his
counterparts in Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Egypt and
Bahrain after the attack, his office wrote on X.The ministers condemned
the attack and reaffirmed the Gulf nation's "full and legitimate right
to respond" to it, his office added. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant
began operations in 2020 and is 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of the
UAE's capital Abu Dhabi, near the borders with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It
provides up to a quarter of the oil-rich country's electricity needs,
the state-owned operator Emirates Nuclear Energy Company said in
2024."No injuries were reported, and there was no impact on radiological
safety levels," the Abu Dhabi Media Office said. "All precautionary
measures have been taken, and further updates will be provided as they
become available."The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR)
confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the power plant or
the readiness of its essential systems, and that all units are operating
as normal."- Sporadic attacks -An official from the Korea Electric
Power Corporation (KEPCO), which operates the Barakah plant, said there
were no casualties and the plant had not been damaged."It does not
appear that there was a direct attack on the nuclear plant we manage and
operate. It seems a fire broke out at other power facilities on the
outskirts," the official said, quoted by the Yonhap news agency."In the
case of one reactor, operations were briefly halted as a precaution to
ensure safe operation," the KEPCO official added.Rafael Grossi, the head
of the UN's nuclear agency, condemned the attack. The International
Atomic Energy Agency said in a social media post that Grossi expressed
"grave concern about the incident and says military activity that
threatens nuclear safety is unacceptable".The foreign ministry of
neighbouring Saudi Arabia also condemned the attack, saying it was "a
threat to the security and stability of the region".It expressed its
solidarity with the UAE and vowed to "support all measures taken to
preserve the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity" of the
country. The United Arab Emirates was the second country in the region to
build a nuclear power station, after Iran, and the first in the Arab
world. The Abu Dhabi statements did not say from where the drone was
launched, but the United Arab Emirates has recently accused Iran of
being behind attacks on its energy and economic infrastructure.Tehran
launched retaliatory strikes across the region after the United States
and Israel struck Iran on February 28, killing senior leaders and
triggering a broader war.Iran has accused the UAE and other US allies in
the Gulf of allowing US forces to carry out attacks from their
territory. The UAE has angrily denied Iranian reports that it has
actively carried out attacks of its own.Washington and Tehran agreed a
truce on April 8 but peace negotiations have stalled and sporadic
attacks have continued.ds/th/amj/jfx/pdw
UAE calls drone attack at nuclear site 'dangerous escalation'
Dubai,
May 17 (AFP) May 17, 2026-The United Arab Emirates condemned a drone
attack that caused a fire near its nuclear plant on Sunday, calling it a

Death of senior IS leader in Nigeria: What we know.
Lagos,
May 17 (AFP) May 17, 2026-US and Nigerian militaries on the weekend
killed the global second-in-command of the Islamic State group,
described as the "most active terrorist" in the world, at a remote
village in northeastern Nigeria. Here is what we know about the
high-profile leader and the mission operation that killed him:- Who was
the IS leader killed? -Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, also known as al-Manuki or
Abu-Mainok, was a Nigerian born in Mainok town in Borno State in the
northeast, the epicentre of a 17-year armed insurgency. He was placed
under US sanctions in 2023, when the State Department labelled him a
"specially designated global terrorist".The United States and Nigeria
said Al-Minuki was the second-in-command of IS worldwide. He was a leader
in the jihadist Boko Haram group before pledging allegiance to IS in
2015, according to the Nigerian military, adding he oversaw IS-linked
operations across the Sahel and West Africa, including attacks against
"ethnic and religious minority communities"According to the Nigerian
foreign ministry, he was responsible for some of the recent attacks
against the military in the country.- How was operation executed?
-Nigerian military described it as "a meticulously planned and highly
complex precision air-land operation", with spokesman Major-General
Michael Onoja stressing that no American boots were on ground. He told
AFP: "It was a joint operation."The US provided "intelligence, assets
and other force enablers ... (like) satellite photos, intelligence
surveillance reconnaissance assets", Onoja told local AriseTV
news.Citing unnamed officials, The New York Times, reported that it was
"a helicopter-borne assault by commandos from both countries" carried
out by "about two dozen Nigerian and American Special Operations
commandos".An intel source told AFP there was no ground offensive, just
airstrikes on three locations: Metele, Dogon Chukwu and Matari -- all
Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) strongholds in the Lake Chad
region, a restive zone straddling Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The
source said Al-Manuki was tracked through phones he used, which US intel
tracked. He was using five different phone numbers but his satellite
phone was the one he used more often. "So, he was tracked in Matele
through his Thuraya phone," said the source. At least 17 other militants
were killed alongside al-Manuki, including three Maghrebi jihadists who
were drone instructors. The 17 killed included nine women, believed to
be wives of senior commanders, the intel source said.- What next?
-During President Donald Trump's first term, US-backed forces took on IS
in its strongholds in Syria and Iraq in 2019, but West Africa has
become the world's most active zone of Islamist militancy, according to
recent global conflict monitor ACLED report, which showed that Islamic
State activity in Africa hit a record high in the first quarter of
2026.Trump celebrated the killing, saying al-Manuki "will no longer
terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target
Americans".The killing of al-Manuki "marks a significant tactical and
operational success in the joint Nigeria and US counter-terrorism
campaign" against jihadist groups, said security expert Kabir Adamu of
Abuja-based Beacon Security and Intelligence.However al-Mainuki's
elimination "is likely to have limited short and mid term strategic
impact on the terror threat" unless similar "intelligence-led precision
attacks" are sustained while the groups' access to funds, weapons and
new membership are plugged, said Adamu.Early this month, the United
States revealed "profound" changes to its counter-terrosim strategy,
shifting towards partnerships with African countries rather than
maintaining a large US military presence in the region, he added. The
intelligence source, who asked not to be named, warned that "given the
high profile status of al-Manuki there is the high possibility of
escalation of attacks from ISWAP against Nigerian military bases to
avenge his death".Nigeria has in recent months claimed success in
killing jihadists after the US airstrikes carried out on Christmas Day
in collaboration with Nigerian forces in northwestern Sokoto State
targeting fighters from the IS in the Sahel group, usually active in
neighbouring Niger.Washington has since deployed hundreds of troops to
Nigeria to support and train its forces.sn-abu/rmb
Mass DC prayer
event with top White House officials seeks to reclaim US Christian
roots-Hegseth, Rubio, Johnson to speak at ‘Reclaim 250,’ which critics
see as promoting Christian nationalism; rabbi included on roster; one
day earlier, Trump proclaimed ‘Shabbat 250’By Agencies 17 May 2026,
10:34 pm
Thousands of people gathered Sunday in downtown
Washington DC, for a mass prayer festival featuring speeches by top
Trump administration officials — an event critics see as an overt
display of Christian nationalism undermining the US’s separation of
church and state.Attendees sang and swayed to Christian music blared out
on the National Mall, along with addresses by Christian pastors. One
rabbi is also included in the lineup for the event, called “Rededicate
250,” which came one day after a “Shabbat 250” that was promoted by US
President Donald Trump and received mixed reactions from Jewish
leaders.US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Speaker of the House Mike
Johnson were listed as guest speakers. Trump and US Secretary of State
Marco Rubio were set to address the crowd via video. The gathering was
organized by the White House as part of a program of celebrations for
America’s 250th anniversary and, in a video message inviting Americans
to attend, Hegseth said it was an opportunity to “rededicate this
republic to God and country.”Muscular Christian nationalism has enjoyed a
prominent platform since Trump’s return to power, and evangelicals form
a core element of the president’s support base. From the stage, the Rev.
Robert Jeffress embraced the term, which is often taken as a
pejorative. “If being a Christian nationalist means loving Jesus Christ
and loving America, count me in,” said the prominent Southern Baptist
pastor.Hegseth is a member of an ultra-conservative evangelical church,
and his briefings on the Iran war have been notable for their use of
bellicose, Christian rhetoric. He also once paraphrased a fake Bible
verse featured in the movie “Pulp Fiction.”“Today, friends, we are in a
spiritual war. This is a battle in our day between good and evil,
between right and wrong, between truth and lies, between light and
darkness,” Pastor Gary Hamrick of Virginia told the crowd. “This is a
battle for the very soul of America.”The US Constitution explicitly bars
the establishment of any official religion. The expression of any faith
is also explicitly protected. US Jewish organizations have historically
been outspoken advocates for safeguarding the separation of church and
state. The only non-Christian speaker on the lineup is Rabbi Meir
Soloveichik, an Orthodox rabbi and senior scholar at the Tikvah Fund, a
politically conservative Jewish think tank, who also sits on the
Religious Liberty Commission that Trump created last year.Rachel Laser,
the Jewish CEO of Americans United for the Separation of Church and
State, denounced the rally as part of a rising tide of Christian
nationalism.“If President Trump and his allies truly cared about
America’s legacy of religious freedom, they would be celebrating
church-state separation as the unique American invention that has
allowed religious diversity to flourish in our country,” she said in a
statement. “Instead, they continue to threaten this foundational
principle by advancing a Christian Nationalist crusade to impose one
narrow version of Christianity on all Americans.”Before Sunday’s event,
Trump called on Jews to mark Shabbat, encouraging other Americans to
consider embracing the Jewish day of rest as well.“In special honor of
250 glorious years of American independence and on the weekend of
Rededicate 250 — a national jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving —
Jewish Americans are encouraged to observe a national Sabbath,” Trump
said in his Jewish American Heritage Month proclamation on May 4.“From
sundown on May 15 to nightfall on May 16, friends, families, and
communities of all backgrounds may come together in gratitude for our
great Nation,” he continued. “This day will recognize the sacred Jewish
tradition of setting aside time for rest, reflection, and gratitude to
the Almighty.”The call marked the first time that an American president
has formally urged the celebration of Shabbat. Trump’s daughter Ivanka,
who converted to Judaism before marrying Jared Kushner, now a prominent
Trump adviser, reportedly observes Shabbat according to traditional
interpretations of Jewish law.The exhortation received mixed reviews
from the American Jewish community. Support for the initiative has been
strongest among Orthodox Jews, who tend to be more politically
conservative. Rabbi Josh Joseph, executive vice president of the
Orthodox Union, endorsed Trump’s call soon after it was made.“This
weekend, following President Trump’s encouragement, we will mark Shabbat
250,” he said in a statement earlier this week. “We will pause to
acknowledge all the blessings that the Almighty has provided American
Jews through the unique devotion to liberty embedded in this
nation.”Some Orthodox synagogues, including many affiliated with the
Chabad Hasidic movement, have announced “Shabbat 250” programming, such
as dinners and special speakers. More than 7,500 people have declared on
a new website, Shabbat250.org, their intention to observe Shabbat. On
the other side, Rabbi Jonah Pesner of the Religious Action Center of
Reform Judaism is among the faith leaders who organized a virtual event
Friday morning opposing the Sunday prayer rally that organizers say will
“explain why so many religious Americans of diverse faiths are alarmed
and alienated by attempts to use America’s 250th birthday as an
opportunity to frame the US as a ‘Christian nation’ and to misrepresent
the approach to religious tolerance and freedom adopted by our founders
and Constitution.”While previous administrations and presidents have
regularly held and attended faith-based gatherings, Sunday’s event is
still unusual for its scale and the presence of top cabinet
officials.“It’s not unprecedented to have a group of evangelical pastors
or conservative clergy come together for something like this and blend a
certain kind of nationalism with a certain kind of conservative
Christianity,” said Sam Perry, a professor at Baylor University, a
Christian school in Texas. But “the Trump administration taking the lead
on this celebration at this scale is different than previous events,”
Perry added.“We came here to rededicate our country back to God. Our
country has fallen away in so many areas,” Jeana Dobbins, a 67-year-old
retiree who traveled from North Carolina with her friend, told
AFP.Attendee Sarah Tyson, holding a “Jesus Saves” sign, said she
believes Trump was chosen by God to lead the nation through a new
spiritual revival.“God ordained him for a time like this, because these
United States need to wake up,” said Tyson, a middle-aged woman who came
from New York with fellow church members. The organizers’ website says
the prayer gathering is for “Americans of every background,” but Julie
Ingersoll, a professor of religious studies at the University of North
Florida, said the list of speakers suggests “an idea of American
identity that is rooted in whiteness and Christianity.”The event “sends a
specific message… that they are the mainstream Americans, and the rest
of us are sidelined,” Ingersoll said. The National Mall, which stretches
from the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, is a common site for mass
rallies and protests — most famously the 1963 March on Washington, when
an estimated 250,000 people heard Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his “I
Have a Dream” speech.Sunday’s gathering is scheduled to last around nine
hours.
London police: 20 right-wing, 12 anti-Israel protesters
arrested in dueling rallies-Hate crimes account for arrests of nine
attendees of massive rally organized by anti-Islam provocateur Tommy
Robinson, and two participants of opposing Nakba march By AFP and ToI
Staff 17 May 2026, 8:43 pm
London police said Sunday that they
arrested 20 people the previous day at a massive march organized by
anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson, and 12 people at a
counter-demonstration fused with an anti-Israel protest.The city’s
Metropolitan Police — which had already disclosed making 43 arrests
Saturday after tens of thousands of people attended the dueling events —
said 11 of those detained were either non-affiliated or their links
were unconfirmed. The force had mounted its biggest operation in years to
manage both Robinson’s “Unite the Kingdom” march and the anti-fascism
rally organized by the Stand Up to Racism group, combined with protests
marking Nakba Day, which commemorates the displacement of Palestinians
in the war surrounding the establishment of Israel in 1948.Police had
feared clashes after violent confrontations at Robinson’s last London
event in September — when up to 150,000 people turned out — and at
dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrations amid the war sparked in Gaza by
the Hamas-led onslaught of October 7, 2023.Robinson’s rally drew about
60,000 attendees, while the Nakba Day gathering drew 15,000 to 20,000,
according to Met estimates cited by UK media. The force did not respond
to an AFP request for comment on the numbers. Organizers of both marches
had claimed far greater turnouts. In its arrests update Sunday, the Met
said there were 11 arrests for offenses related to hate crimes, with
nine of those people arrested at Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom event and
two others at the Nakba Day march.“They included offenses motivated by
race, religion, sexuality and disability,” the force said, adding that a
further seven suspected hate crimes at the Nakba protest remain under
investigation. The other arrests at Robinson’s rally ranged from public
order and drunk and disorderly offenses to suspects being held for
previous grievous bodily harm and telecommunications offenses. There were
two arrests for assault on an emergency worker and one for possession
of an offensive weapon. At the Nakba Day demonstration, the arrests
included three for failing to remove a face covering, one for assault on
an emergency worker and one for supporting a proscribed
organization.Robinson — a former soccer hooligan turned pro-Israel
far-right activist whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon — had urged
his attendees not to wear masks or drink excessive alcohol, and to be
“peaceful and courteous.”From a stage in Parliament Square, which
featured various far-right and other speakers, he claimed to be
spearheading a “cultural revolution,” and urged attendees to get
politically active ahead of “the battle of Britain” in 2029, when the
country’s next general election is due.
4 IDF troops wounded, one
severely, by roadside bomb in south Lebanon-Amid growing public anger
over Hezbollah drone toll, Netanyahu claims he warned of the danger six
years ago, but doesn’t say why it wasn’t addressed By Emanuel Fabian and
Lazar Berman-17 May 2026, 6:06 pm
A roadside bomb hit four
Israel Defense Forces soldiers overnight in south Lebanon, leaving one
of them in serious condition, the military said Sunday. An officer was
also moderately hurt in the overnight blast, while another officer and a
soldier each sustained light injuries, the military said, adding that
all four troops were taken to a hospital for treatment. It was unclear
whether the bomb, likely planted by Hezbollah, was placed before or
during the ceasefire in Lebanon that US President Donald Trump announced
on April 16, or the Iran ceasefire that began on April 8.Shortly before
announcing the roadside blast, the IDF called on residents to flee at
least a kilometer (0.6 miles) away from the southern Lebanese villages
of Irzay, Merouaniyeh, Babliyeh and Baisariyah.“In light of the
Hezbollah terror organization’s violations of the ceasefire agreement,
the IDF is forced to act against it with force and does not intend to
harm you,” said army spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee.Lebanese state media
reported several strikes in the country’s south, including before the
warning was issued.Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the broader regional
war on March 2. US-brokered Israeli-Lebanese talks — the neighboring
enemy states’ highest-level contact in decades — having failed to bring
the conflict to a close, with Lebanon demanding an Israeli withdrawal
and Israel demanding that Hezbollah be disarmed. The Iran-backed terror
group itself rejects direct talks with Israel and says its arms are not
up for discussion.Hezbollah on Sunday fired several missiles and drones
at IDF troops in southern Lebanon and at Israeli communities on the
Lebanese border, without any injuries, according to the military. In
Israel, apparent Hezbollah drones triggered sirens in the border
communities of Manara and Margaliot on Sunday morning, and in several
communities in the western Galilee in the afternoon. The military also
said several rockets and drones struck near troops in southern Lebanon
overnight and in the morning, with one drone triggering sirens in the
border community of Misgav Am.Air defenses intercepted other rockets and
an apparent drone that Hezbollah fired at troops in south Lebanon
throughout the day, according to the military.PM says he warned of drone
problem six years ago, doesn’t say why it wasn’t fixed-On Friday, a
Hezbollah drone strike killed an IDF officer in south Lebanon — the
latest in a string of casualties caused by such attacks. The military
said it was installing several dozen soccer fields’ worth of mesh nets
to protect troops from the drone threat, with Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu saying at a cabinet meeting on Sunday that the move was at his
request.Northern municipal leaders have accused the government of
submitting to US demands for a ceasefire despite the continued threat
from Hezbollah. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett — the main
candidate to unseat Netanyahu in this year’s elections — said last month
that the government’s failure to stem the drone attacks had turned
troops in Lebanon into “sitting ducks.”Speaking at the weekly cabinet
meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu sought to get ahead of the criticism.“Six
years ago, in a cabinet meeting, I warned about the threat of drones,”
he claimed. “At the time, I first saw it as a serious threat as a tool
for assassinating individuals, but since then, of course, it has
evolved.”Netanyahu, who was also prime minister six years ago, didn’t
address why Israel hasn’t come up with a solution to the drone threat
during his years in power. He also claimed he grew still more cognizant
of the drone threat after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 — despite the
premier’s strained relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky, who has said Israel ignored Kyiv’s offer to assist in drone
defense during the war with Iran.Ukraine’s experience in fending off
Russia’s Iranian-designed drones — which are increasingly similar to the
ones Hezbollah uses — has made Kyiv a world leader in tactical drone
defense.According to Netanyahu, the IDF and Defense Ministry “have done
many things over the years… and they’ve thwarted many hundreds, if not
thousands, of attempts to strike our forces using UAVs and drones.“And
they’re succeeding — every time there’s a new threat, they manage to
thwart it,” he said.Netanyahu added that in the last two weeks, he held
three meetings with “the best minds in the country, and, in my opinion,
the best minds in the world,” to confront Hezbollah’s drone threat. In
one meeting, he said, he told the team that it has “no budget
limit.”“Whatever it costs, it costs,” said the premier, vowing to find a
“comprehensive solution.”“It requires patience and grit,” he said. “But
we have plenty of both those things… We’ll achieve this, too.”Times of
Israel staff contributed to this report.

Latest Ebola outbreak in DRC hits 88 deaths-2026-05-17 HKT 08:39
An
Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has caused more
than 80 deaths has a "very high lethality rate" and no vaccine or
specific treatment, the country's health minister warned on Saturday.A
total of 88 deaths and 336 suspected cases of the the highly contagious
haemorrhagic fever have been reported, the Africa Centres for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) said in an update on
Saturday.Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said it was
preparing a "large-scale response", calling the rapid spread of the
outbreak "extremely concerning"."The Bundibugyo strain has no vaccine,
no specific treatment," DR Congo's Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba
said Saturday."This strain has a very high lethality rate which can
reach 50 percent."Health officials had confirmed the latest outbreak
Friday in Ituri province in northeastern DR Congo, bordering Uganda and
South Sudan, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC Africa).Adding to concerns of spread are significant
cross-border population movements in the region affected.According to
Kamba, patient zero was a nurse who reported to a health facility in
provincial capital Bunia on April 24, with symptoms suggesting Ebola. It
is the 17th Ebola outbreak to hit DR Congo, and officials warned of a
high risk of spread. The previous outbreak of Ebola, which has killed
some 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years, despite advances in
vaccines and treatment, was last August in the central region. That
episode killed at least 34 people, before being declared eradicated in
December.Ebola, believed to have originated in bats, is a deadly viral
disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. It can cause
severe bleeding and organ failure. (AFP) Edited by Tony Sabine
National
lab confirms hantavirus case for Canadian cruise passenger isolating in
B.C.Second person who travelled with confirmed case tested negative:
Canada's public health agency-CBC News · Posted: May 17, 2026 12:03 PM

Canada's public health agency confirmed a positive case of
hantavirus in a Canadian isolating in British Columbia after leaving
the cruise ship affected by a deadly outbreak. In a news release Sunday,
the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said laboratory testing
conducted by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg confirmed
one passenger, a Yukon resident, tested positive while their travelling
partner's was confirmed negative for the virus after samples were sent
from B.C.The case was first reported publicly by Dr. Bonnie Henry,
B.C.'s provincial health officer, on Saturday, when she said the test
had come back with a "presumptive positive" result.Henry said the
passenger, part of a couple from the Yukon who were isolating on
Vancouver Island, was hospitalized after developing mild symptoms,
including fever and headache, earlier in the week. The Public Health
Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed a positive case of hantavirus through
laboratory testing in a Canadian isolating in B.C. after leaving the
cruise ship affected by a deadly outbreak. PHAC said a second person who
travelled with the confirmed case tested negative for hantavirus, while
the overall risk to the general population in Canada remains low.
TAGS:"There have been no further cases identified at this time. All
high-risk contacts are isolating and will continue to be monitored
closely by local public health," PHAC said. The agency said the overall
risk to the general population in Canada remains low from the Andes
hantavirus outbreak linked to the ship."All confirmed cases to date have
been passengers or crew on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Given the
severity of this virus, we are taking a precautionary approach to ensure
Canadians are protected," the agency added.Dr. Joss Reimer, Chief
Public Health Officer of Canada, thanked public health authorities and
frontline staff in B.C. in the statement, "for the dedicated care that
they are providing and for their ongoing management of the situation,
and the passengers for their co-operation with public health direction
to help keep others safe."Risk continues to be low: expert-Dr. Lynora
Saxinger, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alberta,
said the risk from the hantavirus outbreak on the ship continues to be
low for the general public even after the confirmed case. The Canadian
who is sick was on the ship where the initial outbreak happened, she
said, and tested positive during the incubation period.Provincial Health
Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says a Canadian isolating in B.C. has tested
'presumptive positive' for hantavirus after leaving the cruise ship
affected by an outbreak of the Andes strain in recent weeks."What would
worry me most, looking at any kind of an outbreak situation, is if we
start to see a second or third generation of transmission away from the
people who were exposed to the case that obviously had a high viral load
on the ship," she said."Or if there was any kind of unlinked
transmission, so a new case popped up and you didn't know where they'd
gotten it."A total of four people were flown to Vancouver Island after
being on the ship and had been isolating when the person who has now
tested positive began displaying symptoms.B.C. health officials said
Saturday that three of the four are now being cared for in hospitals
while the fourth person continues to isolate at home. Dr. Joss Reimer,
Canada's chief public health officer, says her team is working with
provincial and territorial counterparts to create national guidance as
the country sees both low-risk and higher-risk exposures to hantavirus
related to a cluster of cases linked to a cruise ship. They have been
identified as the couple in their 70s from the Yukon, a person in their
70s from Vancouver Island, and a person from B.C. in their 50s who lives
abroad.Saxinger said being elderly puts someone at higher risk of
severe outcomes from the illness. She said the group was transferred from
the ship in a medically secure way and then were handled appropriately
when they landed."And so I don't think that it really changes the risk
equation for anybody else," she said.26 more Canadians being contacted
for 'low-risk' hantavirus exposure-So far, 12 worldwide cases of
hantavirus have been linked to the cruise ship, including the one
Canadian. On Thursday, Canada's chief public health officer said 26
people from across the country who were considered low risk were asked
to monitor for symptoms, while another nine, including the couple, were
classified as high risk. Those high-risk people in Ontario, Alberta and
B.C. were asked to isolate, and were being monitored. Corrections-A
previous version of this story said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s provincial
health officer, first reported the Canadian passenger's "presumptive
positive" test for hantavirus on Friday. In fact, Henry reported it on
Saturday.May 17, 2026 2:34 PM EDT-With files from The Canadian Press
