Saudis pledge to honor Israel peace terms for islands given by Egypt-Jerusalem reportedly kept informed of new agreement transferring authority over Gulf of Aqaba’s Sanafir and Tiran from Cairo to Riyadh-By Stuart Winer April 11, 2016, 5:11 pm-the times of israel

A new agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia over control of two islands in the Gulf of Aqaba has implications for the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, thus requiring Cairo to keep officials in Jerusalem informed of the developments. The islands are mentioned in the Israel-Egypt peace treaty, and the Saudis are pledging to honor its terms — albeit while stressing that they will have no direct contact with Israel over the matter. Saudi Arabia is formally at war with Israel, but senior figures from the two countries have met in public on several recent occasions, and the countries have a shared concern in grappling with the regional danger posed by Iran. The Hebrew-language Ynet website, citing the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, reported Monday that peace partners Egypt and Israel have been in contact recently over the plan to redraw the maritime border between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Specifically, Egyptian authorities notified Israel about a plan to transfer control of two Gulf of Aqaba islands, Sanafir and Tiran, from Egypt to Saudi Arabia. The islands strategically lie at the opening of the Gulf of Aqaba into the Red Sea and their status was detailed in the terms of the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Israel’s seaport Eilat is located at the top of the gulf and is a major point of entry for goods into the country.Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said in an interview that his country would honor the treaty’s terms as regards the islands. Saudi Arabia won’t negotiate with Israel about the islands, he said, since “the commitments that Egypt approved [in the peace treaty] we are also committed to, including the stationing of an international force on the islands. We looked into the matter and we know our legal position. We are committed to what Egypt committed to before the international community.”Israeli sources told Ynet that the Foreign Ministry has been examining the legality of the matter and the Defense Ministry is likewise reviewing the plan. The report confirmed the Egyptians have reassured Israel that the Saudis intend to honor the commitments that Cairo has under the peace treaty.Al-Ahram reported that if Israel agrees with the islands’ transfer as planned by the Egyptians and the Saudis, it would entail changing details of the peace treaty and that will require a Knesset vote. But the Israeli sources noted that since the Saudis are also committed to its terms, there may be no need to change the treaty, Ynet said.Israel so far has not offered any objection to the plan.Under the terms of the peace treaty, a multinational force is stationed on the islands to ensure they are demilitarized and to protect free movement of shipping in the gulf.On Saturday Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and Saudi King Salman, who is visiting Egypt, announced they had agreed to set up a $16 billion investment fund and settle a longstanding maritime dispute over the islands.A day later, they announced a plan to build a bridge over the Red Sea to Egypt, and the heads of state met at the historic Abdeen Palace in Cairo to oversee the inking of a string of agreements Egypt hopes will help boost its battered economy. In one of the most high-profile announcements, Cairo said it had agreed to demarcate its maritime borders with Saudi Arabia, officially placing the two islands in the Straits of Tiran in Saudi territory. The Egyptian parliament must still vote on the plan to approve it.The agreement announced by the cabinet on Saturday to settle the dispute over Tiran and Sanafir provoked an immediate backlash in Egypt, where thousands tweeted a hashtag accusing Sissi of selling the islands.Tiran had historically been a Saudi island “leased” to Egypt in 1950.AFP contributed to this report.

In Egypt, Saudi king calls for joint war on Mideast terrorism-On rare Cairo visit, elderly monarch signs slew of investment deals, while Sissi agrees to hand over two Straits of Tiran islands-By AFP April 10, 2016, 11:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

CAIRO — Saudi King Salman called Sunday for a joint fight against “terrorism” in the Middle East at a time when Riyadh is engaged in several conflicts the region. The 80-year-old monarch is on a rare five-day visit to Egypt, a trip seen as a clear show of support for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, the former military chief who toppled his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi in 2013.The two leaders have already signed a slew of multi-billion-dollar investment deals, and on Saturday Egypt agreed to demarcate its maritime borders with Saudi Arabia by officially placing two islands in the Straits of Tiran in Saudi territory.“The other mission that we should work on together is the fight against extremism and the fight against terrorism,” King Salman said in an address to the Egyptian parliament broadcast live on state television. In December, Saudi Arabia announced the creation of an “anti-terrorism” coalition whose members it said would share intelligence, counter violent ideology and deploy troops if necessary to combat extremists. The kingdom is part of the US-led coalition bombing the jihadist Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.Riyadh is also leading an Arab coalition, of which Egypt is a member, that has been bombing Iran-backed Huthi Shiite rebels in Yemen.Saudi Arabia has been a key backer of Sissi since the overthrow of Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood movement was viewed by Riyadh with suspicion. It has since pumped billions of dollars in aid and investment into Egypt. On Saturday, King Salman and Sissi agreed to set up a $16 billion investment fund, and also settled the long-standing maritime dispute.Salman announced on Friday a plan to build a bridge over the Red Sea to Egypt, and inked several other agreements Egypt hopes will boost its battered economy. His visit follows months of reports in Saudi and Egyptian newspapers of strained ties over Cairo’s unwillingness to participate fully in operations against Houthi rebels in Yemen.Egypt had announced it would back Saudi Arabia with ground troops if needed, but appears to have balked at the prospect of becoming mired in the conflict. For Saudi Arabia, which is in competition with regional rival Iran, keeping Egypt under its aegis is crucial, and it has played a key role in propping up Egypt’s economy.

Israel has hit ‘dozens’ of Hezbollah arms transfers, Netanyahu says-Prime minister tells soldiers army is acting ‘near and far’ to prevent terror organization from acquiring game-changing weapons-By Times of Israel staff April 11, 2016, 6:56 pm

Israel has carried out dozens of strikes against Hezbollah to prevent the Lebanese group from obtaining advanced weapons, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, a rare Israeli admission of involvement in a series of air attacks in Syria.Netanyahu made the comments while on a tour of the Golan Heights, where Israeli officials have warned Hezbollah and Iranian fighters may try to set up a base across the border in Syria to launch attacks against Israelis.Saying that he was proud of Israel’s ability to maintain “relative quiet and security” in an otherwise stormy Middle East, he told soldiers stationed there: “We act when we have to act, including here and across the border, with dozens of strikes, to prevent Hezbollah acquiring tie-breaking weaponry.”He added that Israel was active against the Shiite organization on other fronts too, “both near and far.”“If we need to go to war, and this possibility stands before us and because of that you are here, it’s because we weren’t able to prevent dangers to the State of Israel in any other way,” he said.Netanyahu’s comments could be seen as the latest saber-rattling in a war of words between Israel and Hezbollah — which fought an actual war in 2006. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has threatened to hit Israeli chemical and nuclear sites in separate speeches over the past months.Analysts say the group has been increasingly squeezed by recent moves in Gulf states and the Sunni-dominated Arab League to blacklist the group, considered a proxy of Iran, over its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. On Saturday, Julian Roepke of the German Bild newspaper reported that Hezbollah had acquired a game-changing SA-17 missile battery originally given to the Assad regime by Russia. The Buk, as it’s also known, is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system with an attack radius of approximately 30 miles (50 kilometers). It can strike targets flying at altitudes of 30,000-80,000 feet (10,000-24,000 kilometers) and would constitute a real threat to aircraft such as helicopters.Israel has long feared that the Shiite terror group would acquire the SA-17 system and has allegedly targeted a number of Hezbollah weapon convoys and caches over the years in Syria and Lebanon to prevent the transfers, though Jerusalem has generally refused to confirm involvement in specific strikes. In 2013, US officials claimed Israeli aircraft targeted a shipment of SA-17 missiles en route to Lebanon. On Wednesday, global intelligence firm Stratfor revealed satellite images of an area on the northern Lebanese-Syrian border which indicate that Hezbollah has been consolidating positions it conquered from Syrian rebels in June 2013.The terror organization has reportedly been constructing a fortified base inside Syria that it may be using to store Iranian ballistic missiles with the range to hit Israel.Other sources cited in the report said there are long-range missiles at the base including Iranian-manufactured Shabab-1, Shabab-2, and Fateh-110 ballistic missiles, although there was no satellite confirmation to back up the claim. The missiles are estimated to have ranges from 200 to at least 1,000 kilometers (125-625 miles), putting all of Israel within striking distance.Judah Ari Gross and Stuart Winer contributed to this report.

PA arrests 3 missing youths, foils ‘large-scale attack’ against Israelis-Trio found north of Ramallah with grenades, sub-machine gun; Palestinian security sources assess they are members of terror group Hamas-By Avi Issacharoff April 9, 2016, 10:37 pm-the times of israel

Palestinian security forces on Saturday arrested three Palestinian youths who had been missing since March 30, foiling a planned large-scale terror attack against Israeli targets, according to Palestinian Authority sources.PA forces had conducted intensive searches for the three since they were reported missing. The trio were found in an open area north of the West Bank city of Ramallah by a joint force of Palestinian police and the Palestinian Internal Security service, according to Palestinian sources who spoke to The Times of Israel. They had a large quantity of weapons with them, including several hand grenades and a “Carl Gustav” sub-machine gun, and it is believed they were planning an attack, the sources said. The three were taken for interrogation. According to the Palestinian sources, they are believed to be members of terror group Hamas.Concerns regarding the three grew on Thursday after the cellphones and ID cards of two of the youths were found near Ramallah, according to Bethlehem Radio.Palestinian police notified the families of Basel Mahmoud Ala’raj of al-Walaja, near Jerusalem, Mohammed Abdullah Harb of Jenin, and Haytham Sayaj, of Hebron, of the find. The families said that they had no word about the whereabouts of the three.

Swede held over attacks ID’d as Palestinian ‘brainwashed’ by jihadis-Osama Krayem was known to police in Malmo for criminal activities before being arrested over Belgium bombings, activists and family say-By Agencies and Times of Israel staff April 10, 2016, 8:34 am

MALMO, Sweden — Osama Krayem lived a delinquent lifestyle in Rosengard, an immigrant neighborhood in the Swedish city of Malmo, before he was “brainwashed” and joined Islamic militants in Syria, community activists and his aunt said Saturday. The 23-year-old is now under arrest in Belgium where prosecutors accuse him of involvement in the Brussels attacks.Krayem grew up in Rosengard, a district notorious in Sweden for high crime and unemployment rates where more than 80 percent of the residents are first- or second-generation immigrants. Muhammad Khorshid, who runs a program in Rosengard to help immigrants integrate into Swedish society, told The Associated Press that Krayem comes from a Palestinian family.“He was well-known to the local police for multiple criminal activities like thefts, for instance,” said the 46-year-old Khorshid, who is from Iraq. He said Krayem “was the perfect target for radicalization — no job, no future, no money.”Malmo police didn’t return calls seeking comment. Sweden’s security service, SAPO, declined to comment, referring to Belgian authorities.Krayem is suspected of involvement in twin bomb attacks in Brussels on March 22. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a terminal of the Brussles airport and shortly afterwards another bomber attacked a the Maalbeek metro station in the city. In total 32 people were killed in the attacks and hundreds more injured.Krayem’s aunt, Akhlass Daabas, told Sweden’s TV4 that the family was stunned by his turn toward extremism.“Suddenly he had disappeared. Nobody in the family knew about it. Then he calls from abroad and says ‘I am with them and I’m not coming back,'” Daabas said. She said “many other guys” from the area had become foreign fighters.Krayem posted photos on social media from Syria, including one where he posed with an assault rifle in front of the black flag of the Islamic State group.Magnus Ranstorp, a counterterrorism expert at the Swedish National Defence College, said Krayem “had also tried to recruit people from Malmo.”In 2009, Ranstorp co-authored a report warning of the spread of Islamic extremism in Rosengard.Belgian prosecutors say Krayem was the second person present at the bomb attack in the subway station. They also say he was at a shopping mall where the luggage used in the airport attack was purchased.“He was brainwashed but we do not know by whom, when or where,” said Nabil Chibib, a 46-year-old Palestinian from Lebanon who has lived in Sweden since 1990 and said he knows Krayem’s father.Chibib said Krayem’s father used to be a medical doctor and an imam in one of the area’s many mosques — “not a radical one.”No one answered the door Saturday at the family’s second-floor apartment. On the staircase a young man politely told the AP to leave the premises.Chibib lamented that Rosengard, with its drab apartment blocks, often gets negative headlines in Swedish and international media. The area has long had problems with crime by Swedish standards, though it’s better off than neglected and crime-ridden areas of major US cities. Its most famous son is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden’s most successful soccer player.“There are two ways to get out of here — football or radicalism,” Chibib said.. “Zlatan was a tough and rough kid, but he turned to football, he chose one path. He will always be one of us. Krayem not.”

Arab democracies? Not so fast, say some-The democratic hopes kindled in the Arab Spring have been dashed, leaving many in the region to urge a more moderate approach to Arab liberty=By Dan Perry April 10, 2016, 1:05 am-the times of israel

CAIRO (AP) — A new-old idea is rattling around the Middle East five years after the Arab Spring stirred democratic ambition: that restoring stability, especially if accompanied by some economic and political improvements, should be reform enough for the moment. This discourse appears to be taking front and center these days, most obviously in Egypt — the region’s most populous country and the one that raised the highest hopes for democracy advocates when the military in 2011 removed longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak as millions rallied against him and his Western support collapsed. The current government is aggrieved to find itself facing possibly harsher international criticism than Mubarak ever did, mostly over questions of human rights. It argues that democracy does not require tolerance of chaos in the streets, and that unfettered freedoms can destabilize a brittle society facing illiteracy, poverty, weak democratic traditions and a jihadi insurgency. In meetings with US Congressional delegations this week, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi argued that “democracy is an ongoing process and cannot be realized overnight,” elaborating that Egypt is committed to “striking the balance between enhancing security and stability and upholding rights and freedoms,” according to a statement from his office. The idea has a philosophical foundation: just as democracy is about more than elections and cannot allow an unbridled dictatorship of the majority, so must freedom not be allowed to become anarchy.Critics dismiss such talk as self-serving, a conflating of criticism and sedition typical of elites trying to hang on to privilege. But the go-slow approach does find quiet defenders not only among the wealthy and connected who benefit, but also among educated people who simply don’t fully trust the masses at the moment. How much is hard to accurately gauge in a region where pundits are muzzled in ways both subtle and overt and where polling is rarely conducted. So claims about it tend toward anecdote, experience and logic.“People value stability more than anything else,” said Abdulkhaleq Abdullah, a professor of political science at United Arab Emirates University. He said the instability and rise of political Islam following the Arab Spring slowed the push for greater freedom and democracy, and that most UAE citizens aren’t clamoring for sweeping change while they watch turmoil elsewhere in the region.“Let’s just be modest about it,” he said. “It is just very difficult to build a modern, stable democracy.”Others find it elitist to suggest that the Arab world is not ready for democracy. Are we really not deserving, they ask, of what the Indians and Brazilians take for granted? Some will mention cases of controversial election outcomes even in the West and ask: In such a complex world, can any society truly be ready? Is it not better to simply treat genuine freedom as a basic human right? “The idea that some people are not prepared for justice is racist,” respected Egyptian author Alaa Aswany told The Associated Press. “It reflects a lack of respect for people. I absolutely disagree with it.”Still, to Egyptians who see their region’s turbulence and observe police and soldiers being killed by Islamic State-affiliated jihadis in the Sinai Peninsula, the security argument especially can resonate. And in Jordan, where there’s little doubt that the monarchy is in charge and critics know what lines not to cross, King Abdullah gets major points among the middle classes for keeping a place that borders Syria, Iraq and Palestinian territories calm, even showing some modest economic growth. There is a noticeable decline in the inclination to demonstrate in many countries — although this can mislead: the right to do so is much curtailed and people may have just tired of the trouble and strife.Certainly many seem terrified by what happened in places that have spun out of control. In Libya, militias hold sway. Yemen is mired in civil war, compounded by a year of Saudi-led airstrikes. Iraq’s Sunni regions are overrun by the Islamic State group. In Syria, half the pre-war population of over 20 million has been displaced, and parts of cities have been leveled.Tunisia has had some success in enacting democratic rule, but it is the exception. Lebanon is paralyzed by confessional politics and hasn’t been able to elect a president in almost two years, and parliament rarely meets. Mahmoud Abbas’s term as president of the Palestinian Authority ran out years ago.Democracy rarely gets mentioned in the United Arab Emirates, although there have been elections for a federal citizens’ advisory council. In Saudi Arabia, the monarchy holds absolute control over an opaque, oil-financed government, and municipal councils are the only elected government body. Other Gulf nations have relatively powerless parliaments.Egypt, compared to most other Arab states, has made impressive strides. El-Sissi overwhelmingly won presidential elections in 2014 with far more votes than had been won two years earlier by Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president the military overthrew for alleged misrule in 2013. While the election was widely criticized because the previously ruling Muslim Brotherhood was banned, few claim the vote count was falsified — no small matter considering the region’s recent history. And the president is constitutionally limited to two terms in office — a stark contrast to most of the region. Egypt also has a new elected parliament more diverse and empowered than has been the norm in the region. There has been growing clamor by outsiders and activists against what many term a crackdown on dissent: a law against street demonstrations and another essentially criminalizing anyone contradicting official statements on security; lengthy periods of detention without charges; banning some activists from travelling abroad; and dozens of secret detentions. But the government’s defenders cast the criticism on human rights as unfair since other countries in the region are worse.

US brings B-52s back to the Mideast to target IS-Deployment to Qatar marks first time since 1991 Gulf War the strategic bomber has been used in the region-By AP April 10, 2016, 1:37 am-the times of israel

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United States has deployed B-52 bombers to the Mideast nation of Qatar to take part in the US-led bombing campaign against the Islamic State group, the Air Force said Saturday. It is the first time the Cold War-era heavy bombers will be based in the region since the 1991 Gulf War, when they operated from neighboring Saudi Arabia. The Air Force said the B-52s arrived at Qatar’s al-Udeid Air Base from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana on Saturday. The long-range bombers will join a multinational coalition carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq.

Aussie prisoner ‘carves IS slogan’ into head of cellmate-Bourhan Hraichie used a razor blade to write ‘e4e,’ in reference to Islamic State’s ‘eye for an eye’ mantra-By AFP April 11, 2016, 7:22 pm-the times of israel

SYDNEY, Australia — A radicalized prisoner allegedly carved an Islamic State slogan into the forehead of a fellow inmate in Australia. The 18-year-old, named as Bourhan Hraichie, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and intentional choking following the incident after lockdown at the medium-security Kempsey prison north of Sydney last week.He reportedly assaulted his cellmate then used a razor blade to carve “e4e” into his head, an apparent reference to the Islamic State group’s “eye for an eye” mantra, before placing a towel on his face and pouring boiling water over him.The cellmate, who was rushed to hospital with injuries to his head and burns to the face, was initially reported to be a former soldier, although officials later distanced themselves from the claim.New South Wales Corrections Minister David Elliott said he was outraged by the alleged attack. The prison’s chief was suspended.Officials denied extremism was a problem in the jail system.

Four Jewish Israelis arrested for attacks against Palestinians-Suspects, including two minors, accused of setting vehicle on fire and other unspecified ‘security transgressions’-By Raoul Wootliff April 11, 2016, 9:21 pm-the times of israel

Four Jewish Israelis, including two minors, are being held on suspicion of carrying out or planning attacks against Palestinians, police said Monday, after a judge partially lifted a gag order. The two minors, ages 16 and 17, are suspected of “security transgressions against Palestinians,” according to a police statement. One was arrested on April 5. The second was arrested Monday. Their identities were not made public, apparently due to them being minors. The two adult suspects, identified by police as Dana Shneur and Pinhas Shandorfi, were also arrested on April 5.Police said Shneur is suspected of setting a Palestinian’s vehicle on fire, conspiring to commit a crime and being a member of an illegal organization.Shandorfi is suspected of “security offenses,” according to the statement, but no further details were offered. The Petah Tikva Magistrate’s Court extended Monday the remand of all four by one week, until April 18.Police had requested an extension to the court-imposed gag order preventing publication of any details of the suspects, but Judge Ilana Danieli rejected the application.Further details remain under gag order. On April 5, the police and Shin Bet announced they had arrested three Jewish Israelis on suspicion of involvement in race-related hate crimes. The arrests come amid an ongoing crackdown on Jewish terror following last summer’s fatal torching of a Palestinian home by suspected Jewish radicals.Israel has charged a man and a minor over the attack, which triggered a crackdown on Jewish extremists, but the identity of the adult suspect — Amiram Ben-Uliel — wasn’t published for months thereafter.Several extreme right-wing Israeli settlers, including alleged ringleader Meir Ettinger, have been detained without charge since the deadly attack on the Dawabsha family home in the village of Duma in July 2015.Under administrative detention — an anti-terror measure more commonly used for Palestinian security prisoners — a detainee can be held for six months without being charged or tried. The order can be renewed indefinitely in six-month increments.Ettinger has been denied release, even though he has not been directly linked to the firebombing, which left a Palestinian baby and both his parents dead.Jewish extremists are also suspected of attacking Palestinians, torching homes and cars, and vandalizing mosques and churches in the West Bank and Israel.Last month, five Jewish teens were arrested for attacking an Arab in Jerusalem and stealing his cellphone in what police said was “a distinctly racial incident.” The victim of the attack required medical treatment for light injuries.Netanel Golenberg, 19, and the four other suspects were brought before the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court to be remanded into custody. Four of the suspects were not named, apparently because they are minors. In a separate incident, prosecutors pressed charges last month against four 17-year-old Jews suspected of a “racially motivated” assault on two Arab men in the coastal city of Netanya. The four were being charged with “racially motivated aggravated assault,” the justice minister said in a statement at the time.Tensions between Jews and Arabs have risen during a six-month wave of violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Twenty-nine Israelis and four foreign nationals have been killed in a wave of Palestinian terrorism and violence since October of last year. Some 190 Palestinians have also been killed, about two-thirds of them while attacking Israelis, and the rest during clashes with troops, according to the Israeli army.

Waiting for Islam's Messiah-By George Thomas-CBN News Reporter-Thursday, July 17, 2008

QOM, Iran -- Iran's president believes Allah has chosen him to prepare the world for the coming of an Islamic 'savior' called the Mahdi. But before the Mahdi's return, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad believes there must be global chaos - even if he has to create it himself Whether it's his belief that Israel should be wiped off the map, denials of the Holocaust, obsession with going nuclear, or support for radical Islamic terrorist groups, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a man on a divine mission. To understand him, and that mission, you have travel to the small dusty village of Jamkaran tucked in a corner of Iran's holy city of Qom.On a recent Tuesday afternoon, CBN News made that journey heading south out of Iran's capital, Tehran. Some 95 miles, and a couple of wrong turns later, we arrived at the Jamkaran mosque on the outskirts of Qom.Behind the Jamkaran mosque there is a well. According to many Shiite Muslims, out of this well will emerge one day their version of an Islamic 'savior.'-They call him the Mahdi or the 12th Imam.Ron Cantrell has written a book about the Mahdi. He explained, "The Mahdi is a personage that is expected to come on the scene, by Islam, as a messiah figure. He is slotted to come in the end of time, according to their writings, very much like how we think of the return of Jesus."Shiite Muslims believe the Mahdi, a descendent of the Prophet Mohammed, vanished in the middle of the 9th century.Cantrell told us, "The 12th Imam disappeared, around the age of 9, with a promise that he would return and he would bring Islam to its total fruition as the world's last standing religion."Enter Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Since becoming the president of Iran in August 2005, Ahmadinejad has emerged as the Mahdi's most influential follower.Cantrell said, "[Ahmadinejad] has stated that his mandate is to pave the way for the coming of this Islamic 'messiah'."In almost all his speeches, Ahmadinejad begs Allah to hasten the return of the Mahdi. At a recent military parade attended by CBN News in Tehran, Ahmadinejad said, "Oh, Allah, please facilitate Imam Mahdi's early return and make us one of his supporters."He said something similar last September just before ending a speech at the United Nations in New York.Ahmadinejad said, "Oh mighty Lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository [a reference to the Mahdi], the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace."A few days later, back home in Iran, Ahmadinejad told a group of religious leaders that during his UN speech, he felt a 'bright light' around him.His reactions were captured on video and later posted on a conservative Iranian website.Ahmadinejad said, "I felt it myself. I felt that the atmosphere suddenly changed, and for those 27 or 28 minutes, all the leaders of the world did not blink. When I say they didn't move an eyelid, I'm not exaggerating. They were looking as if a hand was holding them there, and had just opened their eyes to the message of the Islamic Republic."Ahmadinejad is reportedly tied to a radical Islamic society in Iran that believes man can hasten the appearance of the Mahdi by creating chaos in the world.Cantrell explained, "Ahmadinejad has stated that this chaos must take place before the Mahdi can come on the scene."Some wonder if Ahmadinejad believes these are 'the end times,' and whether his calls for the destruction of Israel and nuclear pursuits are ways to accelerate the divine timetable.Cantrell further explained, "With him it is a win-win situation. If we attack him, he wins because chaos happens. If we don't attack him, he gets to create the chaos which he has said he is willing to do and he will do."In Shiite Muslim teaching, the Mahdi's second coming will be marked by apocalyptic times. Wars, famines and floods will ravage the earth and then comes judgment day and a battle between good and evil.As the sun dips behind the mountains that surround Jamkaran, the faithful, many of whom voted for Ahmadinejad, arrive by the thousands from across Iran to pray for the Mahdi's return.Ezatallah Alimoradi, a follower of the Mahdi, said, "I feel so refreshed in my spirit when I come here to Jamkaran."Akram Alsadat Emmami, Follower of Mahdi, said, "This day belongs to the Mahdi and I've come to share my heart with him."The night begins with a visit to the sacred well. CBN News is given a rare opportunity to visit with people praying there. The opening of the well is covered by a green-like metal box to prevent people from jumping in.Most of the time here is spent praying and kissing the metal box. Others scribble prayer requests to the Mahdi on pieces of paper that are then dropped into the well.A man asked the Mahdi to forgive his sins.A man, Follower of Mahdi said, "If you ask in the right way, your prayers will be answered."Another person seeks healing for family members.Emmami explained, "I don't come here just to pray for myself. I also ask the Mahdi to take care of my family and their needs."Many, like this young boy with a flashlight, believe the Mahdi is actually hiding at the bottom of the well reading those prayer requests.Abbas Rezaie, Follower of Mahdi, told us, "I was looking into the well with my flashlight hoping to see the Mahdi. But not to tonight."Shia tradition teaches that if you come to Jamkaran 40 weeks in a row, you will "see" the Mahdi.A Woman who did not give her name said, "I have not had the privilege to see him yet, but I've had many dreams about him. In one of my dreams I saw a big bright light in the sky and this figure standing over me."The next few hours are spent praying inside the Jamkaran mosque.I stood at the entrance to the Jamkaran mosque; and I've been told that as a non-Muslim I am not allowed to go inside the mosque. The truth is every day, tens of thousands of men and women come through this mosque to say their prayers but also to pray that one day soon the Mahdi would return."Nedal said, "And because we believe that he is going to come back soon we can believe in heaven and hell and we can believe in the life after death."Ahmadinejad's government reportedly gave $20 million to help renovate the Jamkaran mosque. There are rumors that he's planning to build a railway line connecting Tehran and Jamkaran, to ferry the faithful. And apparently Ahmadinejad has also drawn up the plans for the road the Mahdi will take when he returns.Cantrell said, "...that will actually serve as the red carpet rolled out in Iran for the Mahdi to appear."And if all this wasn't mystical enough, there's also the belief that when the Mahdi comes back, he will be accompanied by Jesus Christ.Cantrell further explained, "The Mahdi will take Jesus to Mecca, they will circum-ambulate the Kabah together. The Mahdi will teach Jesus to pray; at which time Jesus will then replace the Gospel with the Koran, and then all of us Christians, wherever you are on the face of the earth, will convert to Islam because Islam will be deemed the one lasting pure religion."As the West drifts closer to a potential showdown over Iran's nuclear program, followers of the Mahdi are getting ready for judgment day.And many of them are convinced that President Ahmadinjead will fulfill his divine mission to prepare the world for the coming of the Islamic 'savior.'

Iranian President Prepares For 12th Imam's Reappearance-CBNNEWS

CBN.com NASHVILLE, Tennessee (BP) -- Aug. 22 could be an ominous date for Israelis and Americans based on its significance this year as one of Islam’s most revered holy days, according to a Princeton professor who says Iran may be planning “cataclysmic events” to prepare the way for Shiite Muslims’ awaited messiah.Bernard Lewis, a professor emeritus of Near Eastern studies at Princeton University, warned in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that Aug. 22 this year corresponds to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427 on the Islamic calendar, which is when Muslims commemorate the flight of the prophet Muhammad on a winged horse to Jerusalem and then to heaven and back.Aug. 22, Lewis said, could provide an opportune moment for Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to set in motion the return of the 12th Imam, whom Shiites believe will forever end the struggle between good and evil in the last days.“Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced,” Lewis wrote in The Wall Street Journal Aug. 8. “It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22.”The United Nations Security Council has asked Iran to stop all uranium enrichment by the end of August, but Iran has refused. Western nations, led by the United States, believe Iran is using its nuclear program as a cover for developing atomic weapons while Iran says the program is for generating electricity with nuclear reactors.Ahmadinejad repeatedly has said he believes Israel should be obliterated, and he is a clear foe of the U.S. government, which he contends is against Islam and is the strongest threat to his Shiite goal of Middle East domination.Lewis identifies another key reason Ahmadinejad is an imminent nuclear threat, based on an concept that kept nations from nuclear attacks during the Cold War -- mutual assured destruction.“There is a radical difference between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other governments with nuclear weapons,” Lewis noted. “This difference is expressed in what can only be described as the apocalyptic worldview of Iran’s present rulers.”In other words, Iran doesn’t fear retaliation if they attack Israel or the United States because a final global struggle against an evil enemy will present them with the privileges of martyrdom as taught in Islam, Lewis wrote. Death is not a deterrent.“It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind,” Lewis wrote.Ahmadinejad Obsessed with Return of 12th Imam-Kairos Journal, which seeks to equip church leaders as they engage the culture for Christ and has several leading Southern Baptists on its editorial team, has taken a look at Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s fascination with the return of Shiite Muslims’ messiah and what that means if Ahmadinejad is armed with nuclear weapons.“Ahmadinejad belongs to the mainstream of Shi’a Islam, known as ‘Twelvers,’” an article posted at www.kairosjournal.org stated. “They recognize a historical succession of Imams, connected by family ties, commencing with Muhammad and concluding with the 12th Imam.”The 12th Imam was born around 868 A.D. at a time of great persecution of Shiites, the journal explained, and in order to protect him, his father, the 11th Imam, sent him into hiding. He appeared in public briefly at the age of 6 when his father died but then went back into obscurity. Shiites believe he continues to guide Muslims, and they expect his “messianic” return to bring order from chaos and righteousness from unbelief, Kairos said.“President Ahmadinejad seems to think that the time is ripe for the 12th Imam’s reappearance and that, as president, he should play a role in opening the way for his return,” the journal said. “He is reported to have said in one of his cabinet sessions, ‘We have to turn Iran into a modern and divine country to be the model for all nations, and which will also serve as the basis for the return of the 12th Imam.’”Like Bernard Lewis of Princeton, the Kairos authors said Ahmadinejad seems to believe “that the hand of God is guiding him to trigger a series of cataclysmic events which could precipitate the return of the 12th Imam. Only time will tell if this is his true conviction; but if he does hold such a view, his possession of nuclear weapons is a particularly scary prospect.”

12th Imam,' Key Facet Of Islamic Prophecy, Fuels Middle East Turmoil-CBNNEWS

CBN.com NASHVILLE, Tennessee, (BP) Among the nearly 68 million people in Iran, the vast majority are Muslim who place their hope not in modern-day politics or rulers but in a person who walked the earth centuries ago and is promised to return.“Both Islam and Christianity have a very well-defined eschatology, or period of the last days; both of them cannot be correct …,” said William Wagner, senior professor at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and author of the book, “How Islam Plans to Change the World.”A majority of Shiite Muslims traditionally believe that the “12th Imam” (Islamic religious leader), born in 868 A.D., was placed by God into hiding (known as occultation) until the day of judgment. Southern Baptist author and evangelist Anis Shorrosh explained that many Shiites also refer to the 12th Imam as the Mahdi, an Arabic word that generally references a messiah, or a guide.“This man will come to show them the way, because the prayer of every Muslim five times a day … ends with ‘Show us the right path, not the path of those who have incurred your anger or those who are lost, but those upon whom grace has come,’” Shorrosh said.Though most strains of Islam have a belief in the Mahdi, Shiites traditionally believe he is Mohammed ibn Hasan, the 12th in the line of imams who were descendents of the prophet Mohammed. Though they do not know when the Mahdi will return, they believe he will come to end the misery of his people. Some strains of Islam even hold a belief that Jesus will be the Mahdi who will return and proclaim Islam as the true religion.“Satan always tries to duplicate everything that God does,” Wagner said, “and I believe he has created his own eschatology that is somewhat similar to that of Christianity, but false enough to where it is apparent that it is not the truth.”Ray Tallman, director of the school of intercultural studies at Golden Gate Seminary, noted that the major eschatological question for Shiite Muslims is when the Mahdi’s return will take place -– and many hold the belief that the time is near. The increasing clash with Israel and that with Christianity are two indications to Shiites that the Mahdi’s return could be near, said Tallman, who spent seven years as the international director for Arab World Ministries.“All of that is sort of a sign of the times that now it has come to this, and that what is actually being done now out of hate has an eschatological sign of promise to it,” Tallman said of the Shiite view.Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been cited by various news sources as not only believing in the eventual return of the Mahdi, but that the return is near and that it is the responsibility of the Iranian government to prepare the country for his return.“Belief in a savior is universal,” BBC News quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in January. “It is the pivot of our beliefs as Muslims and Iranians. We believe that an offspring of the prophet, may peace be upon him, will be the ultimate savior. His name and attributes are clear. He will come and will administer ultimate justice.”The belief that the Mahdi’s return is near is not a new claim among Shiites, Wagner said, but one that has been held almost since the 12th Imam was historically placed into hiding.“Almost every generation has some figures in Islam that either claim to be the 12th Imam or claim that the 12th Imam will come to himself,” Wagner said.Although Shiites and Sunnis often battle against each other, as is currently the case in Iraq, Wagner noted common efforts among both groups of Muslims to destroy Israel, which is a critical part of Islam taking control in the world and thus ushering in the Mahdi.“They feel like one of the major blocking points is Israel, and that is one reason why they feel like they must destroy Israel,” Wagner said.Wagner further noted that Islam is “on the march” with the intention of the entire world becoming Muslims.“The problem is that in many parts of the world today, Christianity has become very weak,” Wagner said. “It is extremely necessary for all Christians to reevaluate their faith and to become stronger in their faith in Jesus Christ. This is the one thing that Islam fears the most because, down deep; they know that they cannot compete with the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”Wagner also noted that Islam is a religion of fear, with many Muslims fearing their own faith.“It is the task of Christians to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to Muslims everywhere so that they can be released from this fear and find the assurance of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ,” Wagner said.

Ahmadinejad is telling the truth. The aim of Greater Middle East Project is to prevent the system of the Mahdi-HARUN YAHYA-ADNAN OKTAR PRETEND MAHDI OF ISLAMS SEX FOR MURDER DEATH CULT.

KARTAL GOKTAN: Former President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that "the USA is trying to capture Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh)." He asserted that "the USA is aware of the fact that Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) is the real threat that will bring down their centuries-old empire, and for that reason, they launched a wide-scale investigation about Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh)." ADNAN OKTAR: True. One floor of the CIA building is completely concerned with the system of the Mahdi. I have mentioned this before. They have been working on this from morning till night for years. Greater Middle East Project is also founded against the system of the Mahdi. Because the system of the Mahdi is unifying, they created a system that is specifically separatist. But it won't have any effect on the system of the Mahdi. Yes, I am listening.KARTAL GOKTAN: He continues, "They contact everyone they believe to possibly have a connection to the Mahdi (pbuh). They get in touch with them and gather intelligence. They've done a thousand times more research about Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) in the universities of the United States than all the work done in the theology faculties of our universities. They are preparing for the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) more than we are."ADNAN OKTAR: True. This is not a claim, he is telling the truth.I have been talking about it for a long time. This is the reason the USA invaded Iraq and attacked Syria. USA wreaks havoc on the countries they suspect the Mahdi (pbuh) to appear in. But things will not go as they planned. God says in the Qur’an, "They were plotting and God was plotting. God is the Best of Plotters." God plots on a scale the CIA cannot comprehend. They are nothing compared to God. There is no doubt that they will fail, they should know this.Let's continue with another video about Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh).

The jinni living inside the ring of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) being kept in the Ark of the Covenant will serve Hazrat Mahdi (as)-HARUN YAHYA-ADNAN OKTAR PRETEND MAHDI OF ISLAMS SEX FOR MURDER DEATH CULT

ADNAN OKTAR: We will rebuild the Temple of Solomon. Imam Hazrat Mahdi (as), the Mahdi of God, Muhammad Mahdi (as), will take the ring of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) and the staff of the Prophet Moses (pbuh) out of the sacred ark and bring it in front of the Mosque of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh). The earth and the heaven will shake when Sayyidina Jesus Messiah (pbuh) and Imam Mahdi (as) will be together. In the ark, there will be a copy of the tablet written by the Prophet Moses (pbuh) upon the command of Almighty God -as what is written in the tablet is also mentioned in the verse of the Quran-, and all the other relics. In his era, the Prophet Solomon meticulously had all these relics put together, had them put in an ark and had the ark sealed. Imam Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be the one who will open that ark. He will rebuild the mosque of his grandfather, the Prophet Solomon (pbuh). Whether you like it or not, God will consummate his divine light, even if it hurts you to witness it. But you only misbehave because you misunderstand. Once the Mosque is rebuilt, surely all the Muslims will welcome us with a smile on their faces. Israel and the sons of Abraham will also embrace us. "With the exception of a few, all of them will become Muslims" says Our Prophet (saas). He says, "Imam Muhammad Mahdi (as) will bring the sacred ark to the doorstep of the Mosque. Once he opens it, all the Jews will become believers." In other words, all of them will become Muslims except a few. You make it seem like a crime. You make such a beautiful thing seem like a crime because you are not knowledgable about it. Some people regard this as a loathsome thing out of their ignorance. They regard rebuilding the mosque of God as a vile action. They claim, "Only a blasphemer would rejoice in this." However, it is a great beauty of the End of Times, it is one of the most significant signs of the appearance of Hazrat Mahdi (as).   We will rebuild both the Mosque and the palace of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh). It wouldn't make any difference if you ran 100 meters or poured a bucketful of ice down your head. You won't be able to prevent us from doing so. Imam Mahdi (as) will appear, the Prophet Jesus will appear and together we will open the sacred ark. It is clearly stated in the hadiths that Sayyidina Jesus Messiah will be there when Hazrat Mahdi opens the ark and puts the ring of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) on his sacred finger.   The ring is made of ruby and it is full of jinns. It has a hexagonal sign on it which is a particular method to imprison jinns.  It is hexagonal and made of ruby. The jinns live inside the ring. Thousands of them. The Prophet Solomon put them in the ring to be passed on to his son. The jinns cannot leave the ring. It is a blessing of God. Look, they are born, grow up and die inside it. Normally, they live in the corners of rooms etc, but they cannot leave the ring. The jinns remained in the ring for generation after generation and they were ordered to serve Hazrat Mahdi (as).  Rutkay; "Teacher, you mentioned that there are jinns imprisoned inside the ring of Solomon (pbuh). Would these jinns serve someone other than Hazrat Mahdi (as) if he were to acquire the ring?" The Prophet Solomon (pbuh) specifically ordered the jinns to obey his son, Hazrat Mahdi (as). They do not obey anyone who has the ring. The jinni would strangle that person, may God forbid. It will belong to his son. This is why no one opens the ark. Because even though someone has the ark, the jinns of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) wouldn't let anything be stolen from it. As you know, people are mortally afraid of the ark. Because, those who touch the ark are smitten by the seventy thousand volts of electricity running through it. In short, these jinns would devastate anyone who messed with them. The Prophet Solomon (pbuh) ordered them to serve Hazrat Mahdi (as). In the time of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh), there was a Masonic sect who were responsible to serve the system of Mahdi. Golden ring with ruby on it. These jinns only act upon orders. Once he says, "You will serve my son, Mahdi" they can do nothing but obey. Jinni serve someone only when they are ordered to do so.  The ring of the Prophet Solomon is made of red ruby and has a hexagram on it. It is an obstacle jinni cannot overcome, Insha'Allah. There are all kinds of relics in that ark.  "The staff of the Prophet Moses (pbuh) is made from the branch of a tree found in Heaven. It was given to him by the Messenger of God, Gabriel when he was on his way to Midian." Gabriel (pbuh) appears to him in the disguise of a pleasant old man and gives him the staff. The Prophet Moses (pbuh) has no idea about the real properties of the staff. "This staff and the casket of the Prophet Adam (pbuh) are in the Lake Tiberias. They will neither decay nor change and remain there until Qaim Muhammad Hazrat Mahdi appears and takes them out of the lake. (Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 52, Page 351)-Naim Sulaiman narrates from Bin Issad: "According to what I've heard," in other words, according to what Our Prophet (saas) related, "In Hazrat Mahdi's hands, once serene casket", the ark of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) was given a power from God that comforts, sooths those looking at it and it is called the Casket of Shekhinah.   In other words, it has a soothing effect on people who look at it. At that moment, all the troubles and burdens leaves the soul. "gets pulled out of the Lake Tiberias", out of the bog of the Lake Tiberias, "and it is brought to Hazrat Mahdi (as) in Bayt al-Muqaddas" Byat al-Muqaddas is in Jerusalem, "All the Jews who see it will become Muslims except a few of them." Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, page 23. God also points out to the casket of the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) in the 248th verse of Surah al-Baqara."Their Prophet said to them: ‘The sign of his kingship," God does not refer to Our Prophet (saas) here, He refers to a king, Hazrat Mahdi (as),  "is that the Ark that will come to you, containing serenity from your Lord", in other words it brings with it a sense of safety and serenity. Interesting, it sooths those who see it. "...and certain relics left by the families of Moses and Aaron."    Many signs from the families of the Prophet Moses (pbuh) and the prophet Aaron (pbuh).   This is the verse of the Quran I am reading. "It will be borne by angels." In other words, the ark is escorted by angels. "There is a sign for you in that if you are believer.’" What is that sign? It is the sign of the system of Mahdi, the sign of the End of Times and God says "You will find that sign." "There is a sign for you in that if you are believer.’" (Surah al-Baqara, 248) It corresponds to the year 2033 in abjad calculations.Imam Riza asked someone "What do you think shekhinah is?"   Those around him didn't recognize it and said "May we sacrifice our lives to you in the name of God, what is it?"   He said: "It is a pleasant breeze from Heaven. It is with the Prophet (saas). When he built Kaaba, he saw the Prophet Abraham (pbuh), the Prophet Abraham showed him what to do and  he laid the foundations of Kaaba on it."   That shekhinah is in the ark now. In other words, it has a serene, soothing property. God created it so. God specifically points out to that sacred ark in the Quran and tells the sings and relics inside it one by one.  God says in the verse, "there are certain relics left by the families of Moses and Aaron" and these relics are inside the sacred ark.   "It will be borne by angels" He says. What does that mean? You couldn't find it even if you looked for it. Who will find it? Imam Hazrat Mahdi (as) will find it. My grandfather, the Prophet Solomon (pbuh) hid it really well, Masha'Allah and he ordered his jinni to guard it and put his ring inside the ark. He could keep the ring if he wanted to, couldn't he? And he specifically ordered his jinns saying, "Don't allow anyone other than my son open the ark." It is They would cover it with a special veil so that no one could see it. written in the Torah that everyone who tried to open it were scalded. No one could open the ark. They would cover it with a special veil so that no one could see it."I asked Abu Hasan this; 'May my life be sacrificed for you in the name of God, what did the casket look like? What was its size?' 'Three to two ells' he answered. I asked 'What is inside it?' He answered 'The staff of the Prophet Moses and shekhinah.'"   In other words, it has a soothing power. "I asked 'What is shekhinah?' He said 'It is a spirit that gives information from God. When they are in disagreement about any subject, it talks to them and informs them about what they want to know.'" In other words, the ark has in it a spirit from God and and the ring of the Prophet Solomon is full of jinns.   This is why no one can open the ark. It is mentioned in the Torah in great detail. All of those who tried to open it were scalded. Everyone knows about this subject. What God refers to by "...and certain relics left by the families of Moses and Aaron" in the 248th verse of Surat al-Baqara are, "the pieces of the tablets that are kept in the ark." In other words, the pieces of the tablets given to the Prophet Moses (pbuh). Moses (pbuh) wrote them with his own hands,  "A piece of the staff of Moses, clothes and sandals of Moses and Aaron,"  Look, the Prophet Moses (pbuh) and the Prophet Aaron (pbuh). This is a wonderful detail. "...clothes and sandals, a pot of manna."  The Prophet Moses especially points out; "Take this manna" he has it put inside a golden pot," and put it away for it is a relic that will be found by Mahdi in the End of Times. Hide it so that my son can see it." Then he has the pot of manna put in the ark. It is the genuine manna of that era. It sits inside a golden pot in the Ark of the Covenant. The original parts of the Torah written on stone tablets. There is no way people can deny it. Where are these written in? In al-Tabari. Al-Tabari, volume 2, pages 387-388. In al-Tusi, volume 2, pages 292-293. The same passage can be found in the work of Fakhr al-Din and in the work of al-Suyuti, volume 1, page 563. "After the ark was prepared, Moses (pbuh) put the remnants of the tablets written on the Mount Sinai on which is the ten commandments of God, the new two tablets on which the ten commandments of the God were rewritten, a golden pot containing the manna that were sent down to them from heavens in at-Tih Desert," the pot that preserves the manna is pure gold, "the rod of Aaron budding with the might of God," a piece of his rod, "inside the casket, placed it on the most sacred place of the tabernacle and covered it with a veil." Exodus, 16/33-34. It is covered with a veil. "Moses (pbuh) talked to God in a state of serenity and shekhinah," he feels no fear, only serenity as a blessing from God, "and heard His words from behind the lid of the ark and a cloud of the glory and grandness of God appeared between two angels over the ark." A cloud appears and Moses (pbuh) hears God through that cloud. Besides, the Prophet Moses builds this sacred ark according to instructions from the revelation. 2016-04-01 00:41:20

PA said handing out draft UN resolution on settlements-In bid to revive peace prospects, Abbas aims to present condemnation of Israel’s West Bank policy for vote-By Times of Israel staff April 7, 2016, 11:42 pm-the times of israel

The Palestinian Authority over the past week distributed a draft resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank among several representatives of UN Security Council member-states.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas aims to present the resolution for a vote during his visit to the UN in two weeks, Haaretz newspaper said on Thursday.Earlier this year, Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the world body, suggested that a resolution condemning Israel’s expansion of Israeli settlements could be a first step toward reviving peace prospects, but he stressed that there should be a broader plan.Mansour said such a plan may include the creation of an international support group, the deployment of observers to trouble spots or the convening of an international peace conference. The United States used its veto in 2011 to block a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlements, and it has rejected a UN role in the peace process. The council has not adopted a resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since 2009.A spokesman for Abbas said Wednesday that the Palestinian leader will meet France’s Francois Hollande in Paris later this month to discuss a new French push for peace-Abbas “will have an important meeting with President Francois Hollande to discuss convening an international peace conference in accordance with the French initiative,” Nabil Abu Rudeineh said.

Iran boasts it has developed 12 new nuclear products-On Day of Nuclear Technology, Rouhani also announces new atomic facility, unveils latest technology-By Times of Israel staff April 7, 2016, 8:29 pm

In a ceremony to mark Iran’s National Day of Nuclear Technology, the Islamic Republic on Thursday announced the unveiling of twelve new, self-developed nuclear products in several different fields, ranging from fuel and laser technology to power plants and reactors.Among the products unveiled at the ceremony, which was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, were new centrifuge systems and fuel rod complexes for testing reactors, according to the Iranian Fars news. The report quoted a spokesman for the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization referring to “new nuclear achievements” in “fuel, laser, power plants and health fields.”During Thursday’s event, Rouhani also announced the establishment of the Pasman Gor nuclear site in Anarak region, as well as the publication of three books related to nuclear technology and the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. On Wednesday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said the country intends to produce the powerful explosive Octogen for use in the warheads of its missiles to improve their “destructive and penetration power.”Octogen is used as an explosive in penetrating missile warheads and as a solid rocket fuel — but is also employed as part of the detonator in an atomic bomb.During a ceremony to inaugurate a Octogen production plant, Dehqan stressed Iran’s goal of gaining the know-how to make the explosive material in order to avoid relying on external sources.Western powers have called on the UN to take action against Iran over tests of ballistic missiles carried out on March 9, noting they threatened Israel.Under a UN Security Council resolution passed alongside a landmark nuclear deal last year, Iran is forbidden to develop weapons that can carry nuclear weapons. That would seem to include ballistic missiles, including two that were tested last month with the words “Israel must be wiped off the earth” emblazoned on one, according to the US and other Western powers. The nuclear agreement, passed in July 2015 and implemented in January, lifted punishing economic sanctions and has allowed Iran to forge fresh economic and diplomatic ties with the West. In return Iran agreed to dismantle the weapons-capable aspects of its nuclear program. At the end of March, the US, France, Britain and Germany and three allies called for a United Nations Security Council meeting to formulate an “appropriate response” to Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests, which they say were carried out in defiance of the UN resolution. The letter called the launches “destabilizing and provocative” and says the Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile and Qiam-1 short-range ballistic missile that were fired are “inherently capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”Israel also called for punitive action against Iran following the tests.Iran maintains that because it cannot develop nuclear weapons under the deal, no missile is capable of carrying a nuclear weapon.

PM slams MK’s ‘shameful’ remarks on defining terrorists-Zionist Union also rejects Zouheir Bahloul’s comment that Palestinians who attack soldiers, unlike those who attack civilians, cannot be considered terrorists-By Times of Israel staff April 7, 2016, 7:56 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday harshly criticized a Zionist Union lawmaker for saying that a Palestinian who attempts to stab an Israeli soldier is not a terrorist, unlike someone who attacks civilians.“MK [Zouheir] Bahloul’s comments are shameful,” Netanyahu wrote in Hebrew on Facebook. “IDF soldiers protect us with their bodies from bloodthirsty murderers. I expect all Israeli citizens, and members of Knesset in particular, to give them their full support.”Freshman MK Bahloul, an Israeli Arab former sports broadcaster and journalist, made the comments earlier Thursday in reference to the stabbing attack last month in which a soldier shot a disarmed Palestinian assailant in the head. The incident made international headlines and sparked a national debate after a video of the incident emerged. The soldier, whose name has not been released due to a gag order, now faces manslaughter charges, and had his detention at an IDF base extended by eight days on Thursday. The Zionist Union also sought to distance itself from comments, saying Bahloul’s remarks did not reflect the party’s position.Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog wrote Thursday on Twitter that he had told Bahloul he “rejects and strongly condemns his statements, and that the position of the Zionist Union is a terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist.”The party itself said that the “terrorist from Hebron was like any other terrorist” and that Bahloul’s comments “did not reflect or represent the position of the party.”“We are in the midst of a wave of terror and the government should start acting against this wave productively,” the statement read.Bahloul told Army Radio that the “word ‘terrorist’ has become all-inclusive” and that every Palestinian was now suspected of being a potential terrorist.“All those who struggle for their freedom and independence are considered terrorists by Israelis,” he said. The MK did, however, make a distinction between Palestinians who attack civilians and those who attack soldiers.“I agree that a person who takes the lives of members of a whole family is a terrorist. They are terrorists and murderers who deserve punishment,” Bahloul said. But “those who attack families in their sleep [like in the case of the Fogel family in Itamar in 2011 in which the parents and three children, including a three-month old were stabbed to death] cannot be considered terrorists if they attack an IDF position,” he said. The nationalist Jewish Home party responded to Bahloul’s remarks saying that the Labor Party (the greater partner in the Zionist Union, along with Hatnuah) “has slowly transformed from post-Zionist to pro-Palestinian.”“[Former prime minister and Labor Party leader] Yitzhak Rabin is turning over in his grave,” the party said in a statement, according to Channel 2.

PM, Herzog ‘held secret coalition talks, swapped draft agreements’-Negotiations to form unity government were frozen after Labor head hit by graft claims, according to media report-By Sue Surkes and Times of Israel staff April 8, 2016, 12:56 am

Likud and the opposition’s Zionist Union had been in advanced stages of talks to form a coalition government prior to the announcement of a corruption probe into Zionist Union chief Isaac Herzog, Haaretz reported Thursday.Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been holding secret talks for months, according to the report, and the sides had even swapped draft agreements. The talks were said to have intensified over the past few weeks, up until police announced the investigation into Herzog’s finances during primary elections for Labor, the largest of the two parties that make up the Zionist Union faction.Herzog and Netanyahu had expected to reach an agreement by the end of next month and to present a unity government in time for the summer legislative session, according to the excerpted report. The paper was set to publish the full article on Friday.According to the paper, gaps remained between the two sides, including Herzog’s demand that Naftali Bennett’s ultra-nationalist Jewish Home party be removed from the coalition — a demand said to have been rejected by Netanyahu — and disagreement over the shape of the diplomatic process with the Palestinians. The talks took place via representatives for each side, Haaretz said.Herzog’s office did not confirm or deny the report, telling Haaretz: “There was some running around on the part of many people in the past year, who tried to advance contacts for unity, and it didn’t ripen into anything substantial.”The report came hours after Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan warned that the government could fall over a likely failure to pass a budget and called on the Zionist Union faction to “show responsibility” and enter a national unity coalition.MK Eitan Cabel, a key Zionist Union organizer who chairs the Knesset Economy Committee, denied Thursday that there was any talk of a unity government.Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon of Kulanu, who has been pushing for a unity government, had alluded Wednesday to the existence of negotiations to that end between Netanyahu and Herzog.Commenting on the rash of speculations, Erdan told Army Radio on Thursday that while he was not party to any secret talks, “I know there is a desire to broaden the government… A government of 61 MKs [in a Knesset of 120 lawmakers] must try all the time to achieve more stability.”He said there was no argument about that within the Likud, and that if the coalition remained unchanged, “it will be very hard to pass a budget, certainly a two-year budget, so the government won’t be able to remain for much longer.”“I hope,” he continued, “that the [Zionist Union] or other parties will show responsibility and join the government, because there’s no point going to elections at the moment.”Cabel, who is seen as a possible challenger to Herzog for the leadership of the party, has been adamant in his opposition to a unity coalition with Likud. “We can’t go into a government just because they offered us ministerial positions,” he told Army Radio on Wednesday. At the end of last month, Herzog was named as a second senior Israeli lawmaker suspected of graft, a day after Interior Minister Aryeh Deri — who spent several years in prison for embezzlement — revealed he was again at the center of a major corruption investigation.Rumors about a looming unity government have waxed and waned since last year’s elections.

Sanders yet to correct claim Israel killed ‘over 10,000’ Palestinian innocents-Despite two days of ToI questions, and an ADL plea that he withdraw his misstatement, Democratic presidential hopeful stays silent-By Eric Cortellessa April 7, 2016, 1:11 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Two days after the New York Daily News published the transcript of its editorial board’s interview with Bernie Sanders, in which the Democratic presidential candidate twice inaccurately said he believed that Israel killed “over 10,000” innocent Palestinian civilians during the 2014 Gaza War, he had yet to correct his misstatement or issue an apology as of Wednesday evening.Earlier Wednesday, the Anti-Defamation League, a major Jewish organization that monitors civil and human rights issues, urged Sanders to correct his misstatement. “Even the highest number of casualties claimed by Palestinian sources that include Hamas members engaged in attacking Israel is five times less than the number cited by Bernie Sanders,” noted ADL chief Jonathan Greenblatt. “We urge Senator Sanders to correct his misstatements.” The ADL, a tax-exempt nonprofit, generally avoids inserting itself into the fray of political elections and declines to take positions on candidates running for public office.Following the transcript’s publication, The Times of Israel reached out repeatedly to Sanders campaign communications director Michael Briggs and national press secretary Symone Sanders to ask whether the Vermont senator would acknowledge and correct his mistake in massively inflating even Hamas’s own estimation of how many civilian lives were lost during Operation Protective Edge. There was no response from either official. In the interview, Sanders acknowledged that he did not know the exact figures, but twice stated that he believed the Palestinian civilian death count exceeded 10,000, and ascribed such a high level of casualties to Israel’s “indiscriminate” military campaign and “disproportionate” use of force.“Anybody help me out here, because I don’t remember the figures, but my recollection is over 10,000 innocent people were killed in Gaza. Does that sound right?” he asked.Told that his estimation was “probably high,” Sanders responded: “I don’t have it in my number… but I think it’s over 10,000. My understanding is that a whole lot of apartment houses were leveled,” he went on. “Hospitals, I think, were bombed. So yeah, I do believe and I don’t think I’m alone in believing that Israel’s force was more indiscriminate than it should have been.”According to Palestinian figures cited by the UN Human Rights Council, 1,462 civilians were killed out of a total of the 2,251 Gaza fatalities during the 51-day conflict. Israel, for its part, has said that up to half of those killed on the Palestinian side were combatants, and has blamed the civilian death toll on Hamas for deliberately placing rocket launches, tunnels and other military installations among civilians. Seventy-three people were killed on the Israeli side of the conflict. It was clear from the context that Sanders was referring to the 2014 war, but the Palestinian civilian death toll from all three rounds of Israel-Hamas fighting in the years since the terror group seized control of the Strip in 2007 also falls far short of the figure he cited. In an interview with The Times of Israel on Wednesday, the head of the Democratic Party’s Israel branch suggested Sanders may have been referring to those wounded, rather than killed in Gaza. Foreign affairs are not Sanders’s “forte”, Hillel Schenker said, but the candidate, who is Jewish and spent time in his youth as a kibbutz volunteer, “is committed to Israel.”Added Schenker: “He’s also committed to the idea that it is in the American and in the Israeli interest to achieve peace, and he would try to make a contribution to move that forward.”The 74-year-old candidate has criticized Israel’s military response during Operation Protective Edge in the past, while at the same time condemning Hamas for launching rocket attacks into Israeli population centers, building tunnels into Israel and embedding its military infrastructure within densely populated civilian areas.Sanders reiterated the same sentiment in his interview with the Daily News, saying, “I believe 100 percent not only in Israel’s right to exist, a right to exist in peace and security without having to face terrorist attacks.”Sanders, who won the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday, faces an uphill battle to defeat former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nod. Clinton leads him by 688 delegates and needs roughly 34 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination. The next primary contest between the two will be April 9 in Wyoming.

Seven times worse than Hamas: Bernie Sanders by the numbers-Op-ed: The Democratic candidate was unavailable Tuesday to correct his casual traducing of Israel via a grossly inflated Gaza death toll. He was doubtless too busy winning Wisconsin. Heaven help us-By David Horovitz April 6, 2016, 3:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Bernie Sanders exacerbated his shockingly under-informed address on Israel from late last month with an interview to the New York Daily News this week in which he casually traduced Israel. In his March speech — which he said he would have delivered at AIPAC’s Washington policy conference if only they’d let him read it out over satellite — he demanded that Israel remove its blockade from Gaza while simultaneously professing to support Israelis’ “right to live in peace and security.” Needless to say — or rather, evidently, needful to say to Sanders — backing Israelis’ right to live in peace and security entails working to ensure that terrorist groups committed to Israel’s destruction are not allowed to import the weaponry they need to achieve that goal. Demanding that Israel end the Gaza blockade is tantamount to demanding that Hamas be enabled to freely bring in rockets, missiles and all manner of other military equipment to expedite Israel’s demise. Only a politician who supports Hamas — such as Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan — or one with a grossly inadequate understanding of Israel and its challenges could possibly endorse such a position. In his New York Daily News interview, Sanders dismally reconfirmed that he falls into the latter category. The would-be president castigated Israel for an ostensibly “indiscriminate” war on Gaza in the summer of 2014, and, while admitting that he didn’t really know the facts, asserted, twice, that Israel killed over 10,000 innocent civilians in the course of that conflict.Over 10,000 innocent civilians? That’s seven times the self-serving figure asserted by Hamas, the terror group that runs Gaza, and gleefully adopted by the UN Human Rights Council, the sham body that obsessively loathes Israel. According to Hamas, 1,462 civilians were killed. The Israeli authorities believe the true figure was far lower, both because Hamas inflated the overall numbers of combatants and noncombatants killed, and because Hamas deliberately misrepresents many of its own dead gunmen, who often fought out of uniform, as civilians — to demonize Israel, and to minimize its own losses. Israel also stresses that Hamas deliberately placed Gazans in harm’s way by putting its rocket launchers and terror tunnel openings in and around their homes. Finally, Israeli officials note that no civilians whatsoever would have been killed had Hamas not chosen to maintain its violent hostility to Israel, which since 2005 has had no civilian presence and no military presence whatsoever in the Gaza Strip. In Gaza, Israel did what much of the world — including Bernie Sanders — would have it do in the West Bank: It left. And war followed.None of this has made any impact on Bernie Sanders because, quite evidently, he hasn’t bother to look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with any seriousness. This, despite asserting in that non-delivered but widely disseminated speech from last month that “issues impacting Israel and the Middle East are of the utmost importance to me, to our country and to the world.”Only the laziest, most superficial presidential contender could allow himself to throw around false and incendiary numbers in the way that Sanders did in his New York Daily News conversation. This was by no means the only instance of him proving himself lacking in knowledge and rigor, but it was the most clear-cut and dismal, and it’s worth quoting in full.“I don’t remember the figures, but my recollection is over 10,000 innocent people were killed in Gaza. Does that sound right?” Sanders ventured initially. His interlocutors told him he was likely wrong: “I think it’s probably high, but we can look at that,” someone from the Daily News replied, according to the paper’s transcript. But Sanders, undeterred and un-correctable, insisted on repeating it, even as he again acknowledged that he didn’t really know what he was talking about: “I don’t have it in my number…but I think it’s over 10,000,” he persisted. “My understanding is that a whole lot of apartment houses were leveled. Hospitals, I think, were bombed. So yeah, I do believe and I don’t think I’m alone in believing that Israel’s force was more indiscriminate than it should have been.”Yes, Mr. Sanders, a lot of homes were leveled, and other civilian facilities were targeted — when and where Israel determined that Hamas was using civilian infrastructure to shield its military infrastructure, and overwhelmingly after Israel had attempted to minimize the likely civilian impact. Sounds complicated? Well, yes, Mr. Sanders, fighting a terror group that ousted a slightly less evil leadership and now runs Gaza’s government, subverting all relevant resources to its avowed goal of destroying Israel, is complicated. Understanding those complications requires taking a little time and making a little effort. And that, all too clearly, is something Bernie Sanders is proving abidingly disinclined to do.The Times of Israel on Tuesday reached out to the Sanders campaign, to invite him to correct his sevenfold inflation of the already likely inflated Hamas figures for Gaza’s 2014 dead, and to apologize for the error.Correction and apology came there none. Unsurprisingly, perhaps. He and his staff were doubtless preoccupied with his triumph in Wisconsin. Yes, indeed. How could you not want a man of his caliber as president?
