THE NEW POPE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO: FRANCIS I

Cardinal electors have chosen the new successor of Peter

LIVE BROADCAST OF SECOND DAY OF VOTING

20:23 Francis I tells faithful: "My felow cardinals went half way across the world to look for the new Pope"

20:12 HABEMUS PAPAM! THE NEW POPE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO

19:53 Straight after the voting result was announced, the Cardinal Dean Giambattista Re addressed the cardinal who has just been elected Pope, asking the question: "Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?" The ballots were then burnt and the white smoke released from the Sistine Chapel chimney, Vatican Radio reports on its website.
The new Pope enters the so-called "weeping room" where he is clothed in the distinctive white vestments of the Pope. A short prayer ceremony follows, with a reading from the Gospel, for example: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church".

19:43 The Swiss Guards, who are responsible for the safety of the Pope, are all lined up St. Peter's Square  with the white and yellow Vatican City flag at the front of the line up. Their entrance to St. Peter's Square was accompanied by teh Vatican musical band.

19:42 New Pope is being dressed in the papal robes

19:23 Cameras, smart phones and tablets are pointed at the Loggia balcony on St. Peter's Basilica, waiting for the newly-elect Pope to appear.

19:16 The 266th successor of St. Peter has been elected and big puffs of white smoke are flowing out of the Sistine Chapel chimney. The bells are ringing in celebration, in St. Peter’s Basilica. The square has been packed since this afternoon. The atmosphere is jubilant.

19:11 The crowds in St. Peter's Square are rejoicing at the news. It's cheering and photos galore!

WHITE SMOKE:CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS A NEW POPE

LIVE BROADCAST OF SECOND DAY OF VOTING

19:06 WHITE SMOKE! POPE CHOSEN

18:21 No smoke yet. 17:50, which was the time Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope in the 2005 Conclave, has passed. Presumably, then, cardinals have not reached a consensus in the fourth scrutiny. The wait is now on for the fifth voting session which is expected to be held at around 19:30 CET. The eyes of the world are fixed on the Sistine Chapel chimney.

18:11 The Sistine Chapel seagull's on Twitter. The feathery fellow who has been flying around the Sistine Chapel chimney is tweeting from the @SistineSeagull account. The seagull, whose profile reads: "Hanging out at Conclave. Loving Life. And Cheetos", has 4,156 followers alread.

17:50The Conclave voting process follows strict rules. These state that four scrutinies are to take place a day, until the Pope is elected: two in the morning and two in the afternoon, with only two black smoke signals (fumate) being sent out a day: one at the end of the second morning vote (around 11:45) and one at the end of the second afternoon vote (at around 18:45). If a new Pope is elected, white smoke could appear either: at 11:45; at 19:00 (approx.); immediately after the first morning scrutiny (at around 10:45) OR immediately after the first afternoon scrutiny (17:45).

17:18 Cardinal electors are in the middle of the fourth voting session for the election of the new Pope. Cardinals were supposed to leave Santa Marta House for the Apostolic Palace at 16:00. It is their choice whether they get there on foot or by bus, though it’s likely they will opt for the bus given the rain. According to some predictions scrutinies should be over by about 17:50. It would be a huge coincidence if the smoke was white as Ratzinger was elected Pope at this time in 2005.

If the result of the ballot is negative, cardinals will proceed straight to the second scheduled afternoon voting session. If this is the case, there should be another smoke signal sometime within the next hour. A smoke signal will be sent out whether a Pope has been elected or not: Cardinals will wait until the end of the second afternoon voting session to send out either a white or a black smoke signal.

16:23 Cardinal Schoenborn: "The Church does not need a general manager, but a man of faith"

14:13 American cardinal, Roger Mahony, who has been accused of covering up sex abuse cases in the U.S., "has every right to take part in the Conclave," Fr. Lombardi said, in response to the stance taken by the association of victims of paedophile priests' (SNAP). "I know how SNAP goes about making its accusations and how it goes about announcing them, taking advantage of a given moment," he added.

14:12 Joseph Ratzinger will not attend the first Mass to celebrate the election of the new Pope, Fr. Federico Lombardi has confirmed.

13:36  Lombardi in this afternoon's press conference: "very normal" to have black smoke yesterday night and this morning, "no sign of particular split among the cardinals."

12:47 Speaking on U.S. morning television show Good Morning America, President Obama said "It seems to me that an American Pope would preside just as effectively as a Polish Pope or an Italian Pope or a Guatemalan Pope...The Conference of Catholic Bishops in the United States don't seem to be taking orders from me. My hope is, based on what I know about the Catholic Church and the terrific work that thy've done around the world and certainly in this country, helping those who are less fortunate, is that you have a Pope who sustains what I consider the central message of the Gospel which is that we treat everybody as children of God and that we love them the way Jesus Christ taught us to love them."

11:40 (approx.) BLACK SMOKE AGAIN - NO POPE YET. Voting continues

11.33 a.m   No smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, which suggests that the first round of today has not led to the election of the pope.

In the morning you have two votes, and if the smoke is black is made at the end of the two ballots. In the case of election to the first round of voting, smoked, white, takes place after the first ballot. It is likely at this point the third vote.

9.44 a.m. There is no waiting in St. Peter's Square for the second smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. The Cardinals, in fact, after breakfast in Santa Marta, are returning in the Sistine Chapel for the second vote. Two votes in the morning, two more will follow in the afternoon. In St. Peter's Square, despite the rain, some pilgrim is already pending with the nose of smoke.

Black smoke: Enter the mediators

The Conclave is deadlocked: the favourites still have an advantage over the rest but a new candidate could spring up
(vatican insider)
The figure who will next appear on St. Peter’s balcony dressed in white could be chosen over a plate of pasta or a digestive. Cardinals have no televisions, landlines or cell phones in their rooms. After the first negative scrutinies, lunch breaks and dinners in Santa Marta House, the cardinals’ residence during the Conclave, become opportunities for informal discussions on disregarding candidates with weaker consensuses, to the advantage of the papabili who have obtained more votes so far (Scola, Bergoglio, Ouellet). This is what happened in 2005 when many of Argentinean cardinal Bergoglio’s 40 supporters changed their minds during informal talks in the cardinal electors’Vatican residence, and went for Ratzinger instead. Once the Conclave started, the 115 cardinal electors isolated themselves from the outside world. The priests who live in the Santa Marta residence, near the former Holy Office headquarters have temporarily been sent to the Domus Romana Sacerdotalis in Via della Traspontina, while cardinals are involved in the Conclave proceedings. From the moment cardinal electors entered the Santa Marta residence, they have not had any contact with the outside world and have to use protected paths that are constantly under surveillance, to get about. Every space they enter is monitored and blocked off from all forms of communication. A Jammer system is in place to prevent electromagnetic disturbance (similar to those used in international summits or on military missions, in risk areas) and therefore any communication via internet and cell phone in the entire area spanning the cardinal electors’ residence, St. Peter’s Square and the Sistine Chapel. Constant security checks are carried out on the Santa Marta residence-Sistine Chapel route, which cardinals can do on foot or by bus. Everything is checked, from the sitting rooms to the cardinals’ bed posts. There is no Wi-Fi and access to Twitter and other social networks is banned. Cardinal electors are not allowed to speak to strangers. They are only allowed contact with two doctors, some priests who are on hand to take confessions and the cleaning staff. All those who have to access the Holy See during the Conclave are bound to the strictest confidentiality.Annunci PPN

Cardinal Onaiyken: the new Pope cannot ignore Islam

[Translate to English:] John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan
[Translate to English:] John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan

Nigeria’s Cardinal expects new pope to be an evangelizer, to work closely with the bishops, to be attentive to Islam and other religions. Age is not a barrier

Gerard O'Connell Rome
Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, 69, archbishop of Abuja, is former President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, and of the country’s Christian Association. This friendly, intellectual man is a leading figure in the African Church, a strong advocate of non-violence, a promoter of peace, dialogue and cooperation between Christians and Muslims. Created cardinal by Pope Benedict last November, he enters the conclave with 10 other African cardinals to elect the new pope.

You are going to enter the conclave soon, what qualities are you looking for in the new pope?

Let me speak very frankly. My understanding of the papacy and particularly of this special process – the conclave, and my faith feeling is that the cardinals enter the conclave with the Holy Spirit and with the Mother of Jesus, and then they will be led to identify whom God has chosen. I’m not looking at it in terms of we are going into choose somebody, but rather we are going in there to discover God’s will for his Church. If we take it from there, the question of what kind of pope we are looking for just doesn’t arise.I believe that whoever emerges in the election, from the moment he has agreed he becomes pope from that point on he is the Holy Father.  Whatever his name was, whatever his nation was and, of course, whatever his color is doesn’t matter anymore.

Will age be an important factor in the choice of pope, given that Benedict XVI resigned because he said he did not have the physical and mental energy for the job?

For the job as he saw it.  Maybe there could be another pope who would have the same bodily weakness as he and still feel that he is doing the job well enough, but Benedict was himself, he was the kind of pope that didn’t want to sit there dressed in papal clothing and let the other people do the work for him. He’s not the kind of person who wants to do that, and therefore he has taken advantage of the previsions of Canon Law.
Many cardinals say they’d like a holy man, a man who can govern, a pastor and so on.  Don’t you have any similar thoughts? People say the pope should be a saint, a good communicator, a good administrator, a financier and so on, and you begin to ask yourself, who is in this world who can have all these qualities?  The fact is each pope has his own particular qualities. The only idea I have is this: Whoever is elected as pope, from that point on the rest of the Church will follow him. I am not going there with somebody in mind whom I have to choose.

So you haven’t a clear candidate in your mind?
No. I believe the Holy Spirit will guide us.

Do your fellow African cardinals feel like you?
For me several of them are eligible (to be pope). I certainly am not excluding my African brothers. I don’t share the view that maybe it’s time to elect an Italian once again or maybe we should choose a South American, or may we should have an African pope.  These are mere human speculations; the next pope can come from anywhere.

Could he even come from the United States of America?

If he comes from there he will still be pope, he will no longer be an American. Though in the world out there that kind of job is usually not taken by the big powers, and so the Secretary General of the UN is taken from a small country.  In other words there’s no reason why anybody cannot become pope.  Obviously some people are known and some are not known.  I believe that God can bring us somebody that we don’t even think about. I am going in there with the mentality that I am going in there that is a holy duty that I have to perform, and that task is not given to everybody. I am going in there because God calls me to do it, and therefore I am going to do what God wants me to do.

You come from Nigeria and the whole question of relations between Christianity and Islam is a big issue, would you like to see a pope who is particularly sensitive to this?

I don’t think anybody can be a pope and ignore Islam.  In a way Islam has almost one billion members, and is the next biggest religion after Christianity, and its presence is also growing more recently in Europe and America, so you cannot ignore it.  But the pope will have to relate to other religions too.  The Pope is the pope for all. Therefore, the concerns of the Catholic Church and of the world in every corner of the globe are his concerns too.

Many say the question of evangelization is a key factor in what you are looking for in the pope
That is what the Church is for: evangelization.  I would say since the first African synod in 1994 this question of the evangelizing mission of the Church in Africa has become central.

The Pope is also pope of the central government of the Catholic Church, the Holy See, the Vatican, and we’ve seen many problems, such as Vatileaks, emerge in recent times. Have they impacted in any way in Africa?

I wouldn’t say they have impacted that much, expect the press, radio and TV have reported them and people have just wondered what’s happening there in the Vatican?  In my own Church they haven’t impacted that much.  The central office is like the engine room in a ship, you know it’s better not go down there.  In the central office of every big organization, and the Church is a very big organization, you find everything that is in any human organization - good people, not so good people, brilliant people, careerists and those who work with a sense of mission. You get all that.  It’s not a new thing.

Can you see yourself electing a man over 75?
If a man of 75 comes up as the best person, why not?  The age bracket for all of us cardinal electors is 80.  If a 75 year old becomes pope, he can generally have 10 years, or 15 years, and is that not long enough for a pope?  The pontificate of John Paul II which was 25 years is not normal in the history of the Church. The average term a pope’s reign is about 10 years or maybe less. In past centuries popes died earlier, but now the question we are facing is how long do we keep a pope on the throne after the age of 90? Is it really what the Church needs? I would not lose my faith in the Church if a future pope came out with a Motu Proprio setting age limits for Popes too, like you have already for  bishops and cardinal electors.

Can you see the conclave electing a really young pope? One candidate from Asia is 55
If we do that, then we have to prepare for a long reign unless something happens to him, such as someone shoots them or poisons them or so on. Look at Peter, he was executed in this city, and one should not be surprised if his successors are attacked.

Do you think it is important for the pope to travel like John Paul II did, and Benedict XVI to a certain extent?

Yes.  In these days people cannot just sit in Rome, read reports and wait for ‘ad limina’ visits.  It is good that he goes out there to visit people.  You see he is the universal pastor. Now it is possible for the pope to take off from Rome today and arrive almost anywhere in the world in 24 hours. The question of collegiality has kept coming up since the Second Vatican Council.  Do you hope, expect the new pope to develop this a little more, to involve the bishops somewhat more?A pope works within a tradition, and one of the elements of the tradition is the teachings of the Councils, so whoever is pope is committed to the main outline of the Second Vatican Council and collegiality is a major block in that tradition. So one would expect that the next pope would continue what has been done up to now.  He may exercise collegiality in some new ways, in some innovative ways, we don’t know.  There’s plenty of room for development here

Do you expect a long conclave?
Well, if we do four ballots every day, by the time we have voted ten times I think we should know where we are going. Eventually we will find somebody to hang this burden on, somebody to accept this load. He then becomes a prisoner for Christ’s sake.
